Mitch Harper is going to join us in fact he joins us right now the uh cougar um cougar Insider for KL sports.com Mitch how you doing doing great Scotty happy to be on with you oh you don’t mean that but I appreciate you saying it regardless um all right so there’s a lot to go that’s going on right now um let’s talk about crew wakeley you surprised that he entered his name into the transfer portal it was surprising uh because you know he’s been a heck of a player for for BYU and and he’s been a starter you know the past two seasons and you know BYU does have a a a log Jam at safety with some young promising players who Jay Hill referred to in in Fall Camp is home run prospects and you know it’s it’s a difficult situation where and you know crew came in as a preferred walk-on and he’s got one year of Eligibility remaining to to maximize you know his I guess you could say brand and and his name image and likeness uh to to you know get a payment uh so it’s it’s a tough deal because you know as far as what promises are given to these players for the future because right now in between the end of the regular season and Bowl preparation uh conversations are happening with uh to figure out what’s kind of going to be the road map for the bowl season but also for 2025 uh you know colani even told me on signing day that you know the bowl game will be a little a little bit of a preview of 2025 and so you know sorting that out and and getting a Clear Vision and you know crew wakeley B potentially on those uh you know conversations he goes into the portal um but yeah it was a bit surprising because I think he’s been a really good football player and uh I saw that he reported that Utah State’s offered him and if he goes back to the agies that would be a heck of a get for for Bronco and staff because I think he’s been a really good player for BYU the past two years do you know if he’s and and probably this is private and I don’t know if if we know or not or if you know but uh did is he still a walk- on a BYU or did he end up getting a scholarship not sure on that uh he’s he’s been uh he was 2023 was a preferred walkon uh but uh as far as his his walkon status or scholarship not not quite sure on that Mitch Harper joining us 975 the KSL Sports Zone all right so obviously all year long we’ve kind of poised and been ready for an opportunity to see this team play uh in Arlington in a big 12 championship game that did not come to fruition uh but playing in the alamoo bile against coach Prime I don’t think is a bad runnerup prise uh I like the matchup I like I think it’s fun you’re going to get a lot of eyeballs on your team uh from your perspective what are your thoughts on this game is a consolation prize for not necessarily being able to have some of the goals you had when when you were N9 and0 on the season I I like it a lot I I think that you know BYU has been you know struggling the past month and you know to still end up in a you know a first selection for the Big 12 bowl game you know alamoo B after the playoff I think it’s a nice landing spot for BYU and I think it’s one that gives them a chance to to Really validate that they were a a good football team this year because I think there’s still a you know belief nationally that BYU was exposed and the team that they were in November uh is really who they are and you know the the thought is you know the margin from you know Kansas at five wins and BYU to 10 isn’t that big and that kind of got you know exposed a little bit and that you know lost to to to Kansas so this could really kind of change that commentary about BYU and and give the cougs a solid chance to you know get get an exclamation win I think over a program that’s got you know huge visibility with Colorado and it probably could be a you know a highly watched game and put BYU’s brand in in a bigger Spotlight than probably in the last 15 20 years so I I think that it’s it’s a really good spot for BYU and you know it’s a chance too that they do win this game and for the players that are returning for 2025 I think it could give them some Mo some momentum heading into winter conditioning and Spring ball so do you feel like sometimes teams don’t necessar necessarily have the right motivation going into a bowl game and we see teams that have great regular seasons and then just fall flat on their face when it comes to bulll game because they didn’t get the bowl they wanted or they had a late season slide that really prevented them from their goals and they’re just not right there emotionally I know it’s hard to gauge this team but from everything you’re hearing and everything you’re seeing do you feel like emotionally they’re in a good place going into this I do I expect that they’re going to show up and and you know will they will that be enough to to play well you know there was really good feelings to go into that Arizona State game and and that first 30 minutes is probably the worst football I’ve seen from this team this year but uh you know I I think that this team and it’s kind of reflecting too in the the lack of activity of entries into the transfer portal you know aside from crew Wakley you’re you’re not seeing much movement there and there’s still a long way to go between now and and December 28th when the portal uh you know closes uh you know as we see things can change on on a win with the portal and players can and their represent can negotiate things so things can change but as of right now I think that shows the buyin for not only this game but I think the the program at large and you know BYU I think these players really sense the opportunity to really kind of make a statement against a Colorado program that everyone’s going to be talking about going into this game like no one’s going to give any attention to BYU and you know someone like a Chase Roberts who has made it clear that you know he’s his mindset is to go onto the NFL for 2025 he went through senior day great opportunity for him to put out some film against Travis Hunter and who knows how long how many snaps Travis Hunter actually going to play in this game you know coach Prime has said that you know no one’s tapping out and and things like that so I I believe that I think that he’ll play but will he play the full four quarters that we don’t know uh you know but Chase Roberts gets a chance to get some film for NFL Scouts and have success maybe against Travis Hunter that’s a big deal so uh it’s a big opportunity I think this BYU team is is you know sensing that opportunity has really dialed in to show well and and put their best foot forward for to close out this season uh so you anticipate Chase will play in this game I do yeah good good good uh you know some of these guys that you know you you anticipate or have announced that they’re going to the NFL draft sometimes they just check out and start preparing for it but to be on that SC on that uh against that competition on that kind of a uh stage I think that’s uh really valuable and if I’m an NFL scout I and I am encouraging him to get out on the field and show what he can do against Travis Hunter because he can make a few extra coins If he if he plays well in that game no question and I I think that’s interesting too with when it comes to NFL Personnel or NFL uh potential NFL draft picks from BYU you know this BYU team uh you know has has a 10- win record but there there’s no Surefire uh NFL draft pick in the script I think Caleb etn probably maybe the highest Prospect in the group right now Tyler Patty could get an opportunity late maybe and you know Conor pay could you know maybe be a priority undrafted for agent I don’t know but you know there’s it’s and I bring that up because most BYU teams over the years that have had double digit wins they’ve got this you know clearcut you know day two uh you know maybe maybe a late first round guy they don’t have that this year uh and despite having the success I think it shows that they’ve probably overachieved compared to maybe the top end of their roster talent wise and but if they do you know you know have success against the Buffs who who have NFL Personnel even on their defensive line the interior BJ green who was the the big 12 defensive newcomer of the year like Colorado’s Got Talent across the board they’ve got NFL prospects everywhere so this is a good chance for BYU and and their individual players to to put out some really impressive film to maybe get that last push before you go into combine season and and going through the the portion of the draft process where it’s not actual film it’s then the how do you fa in a in a running drill and things like that so I think it’s a good opportunity for many of those BYU players now BYU I think has done a really good job of realizing that we can’t turn over our team in the portal but we can supplement through the portal um and that’s probably the wiser route to go so in what position groups do you anticipate BYU supplementing uh going into the transfer portal era defensive line uh they have to get some Edge rushers and and defensive line Personnel uh that that is an area that’s got to be a top of mind because they they lose pretty much the the top end of their defensive line for next year you know Tyler bad’s gone uh John Nelson Blake mangelson z b Logan Loui the top five defensive lineman are all out after this year they’re they’re moving on with uh graduation no longer having eligibility so uh they’ve got to supplement that D line and they’re really excited about some of the young players and I think that’s going to be one of the big storylines in bll prep is the the young Edge rushers like an E from Asiata who he did miss the Houston game he was banged up so he’s going to be someone to kind of monitor if he’s able to go through the bowl season practices uh Kenny La fona a red shirt out of Springville I mean they they’ve got some young Edge rushers but but um you know those are players that uh it’s a big leap going from a senior lad in group this year to red shirt freshman and sophomore so the the transfer portal would be very beneficial for BYU uh at that position uh you know offensively tied end too they they need to they need to get some tight ends there they offered uh Luke McGary from uh Tulsa but he’s getting a a long list of offers and suitors in the portal seems to be one of the most coveted tight end prospects in the portal portal right now uh but that that’s an area that uh when you forecast for 2025 not much returning at all uh because you lose keano Hill you lose mat avaas and the returning Personnel is a handful of preferred Walk-Ons and you got a scholarship returning player in Ethan Erikson who also you he’s been banged up he suffered an injury in late October and then Noah moak a former American Fork standout he hasn’t you know played a down this year he’s red shirting uh he hasn’t played a you know meaningful football snap in about four years because the mission was in there too so uh that’s pretty much your tight end unit and you got to I think add some Personnel at the tight end spot as well so did you feel pretty confident that the number one recruit in the country was going to sign with BYU yesterday morning or were you surprised by it you know I I wasn’t surprised because you know when I when I got the chance to to really kind of get to know AJ Deans and he came to broadcast house uh in June and and I did an interview with him to recap his unofficial visit uh to BYU and it was pretty clear in that moment that BYU was a real threat to to land him and that they were very impressed by you know Kevin Young’s approach because that was really the first time where Kevin young was really talking to AJ uh you know a lot of this recruitment was for for for many of these teams that pursued him it was going through the father Ace Deans but you know going back to June when I spoke to AJ for the first time in person you know it really just stood out that he was very impressed by the commentary of Kevin Durant and you know working with athletes like Joel embiid even JJ reick you know Kevin Young’s approach to uh handling professional athletes working with them from nutrition on down it stood out and even pointed to that um in his announcement public announcement on first take yesterday so I’m not surprised but it still was just BYU getting the number one guy just saying that out loud it’s just a little bit crazy but you know I think that there have been instances where you’ve seen players like a Ben Simmons go to LSU and LSU’s had you know some good basketball history but they’re not anywhere near Edwards going to Georgia it’s happened but are still you know SEC programs and beu in the Big 12 but still kind of just getting their feet wet in in the Big 12 and they’re they’re a newcomer with a new first year head coach can they really pull this off in that short of a time and and they did and it’s it’s still kind of just uh a very you know I think surreal moment for that BYU basketball program but uh and I’m I think next year the expectations will be off the charts and you know that you know BYU’s got to capitalize on that you don’t want to have a situation where like a Kevin Durant where he goes to Texas and they only go to the round of 32 you want to get to the second weekend and and more with Deans and he’s been very bold and saying he wants to win a National Title and and he wants to go play in a final four and whatever College he’s going to go to that’s what’s what’s what he’s going to be chasing what he wants to deliver so uh expectations will be high but BYU is going to be probably one of the most talked about teams in college basketball next year maybe even this year with just the momentum they gained from from picking up advance so it was a big deal for BYU uh rough loss against Providence do you think they write the ship going forward I know you’re not going to see eigor go 0 for 10 very often yeah I I think they do but that really kind of exposed uh you know a little bit of some of the concerns of of having a freshman L team you know I mean the best players on this team this year are jagore and and Y yemon and and kenon Catchings you know and and those guys combined uh for one of 19 from the field in that game against Providence and the physicality from the Friars defensively kind of you know made things tough for Jor and you saw a lot of kind of one-on-one ball at times that maybe it can work in the NBA with you know the stars that Kevin Young’s worked with but still in college I think it’s got to be uh you know there’s got to be a little bit more ball movement and providence’s defense clearly frustrated BYU you know the rest of non-conference is pretty light and they should be okay in that but you know conference play begins uh at the end of the month on New Year’s Eve against Arizona State who’s eight- one and their only loss is to Gonzaga they looked really good in the kennel going up against the zags so uh it’ll be be diving into the deep end right away in League Play but I think that that performance kind of tempered like hey it’s still going to be a process and if you do get to the NCA tournament that’d be quite an accomplishment for this group but uh you know I think any thoughts of fin fours and Elite eights that people were tossing around you know in May when they got jagor in June was a bit premature uh you know because I think even with between Deans and Jor there there’s still kind of a different tier uh between those two type of talents you know Deans could be you know maybe he could be the best NBA player in the in the in in the NBA in the future whereas jagor tons of ability and he could be a top five pick maybe but I think there’s still kind of a a a gap between that type of talents where deanis shows up and he might be good enough just to get you the sweet 16 alone jagor is still kind of a feeling out I think D has got to work on figuring out what they’re how they’re going to operate still with jagor and D Hall uh that’s been uh kind of a you know a little bit of a transition where I felt like stylistically they looked like Jer was just kind of free flowing with that point guard spot between uh when when D was out with with the toe injury since D’s come back I think there the offense hasn’t been is as smooth I think Paul’s still trying to figure out his role he’s not as aggressive offensively it seemed like uh in the first couple games that he’s been back and and joo’s trying to play off of D Hall so I think that’s gonna be something I’m watching for tonight against Fresno State as they get back home at the Marriott Center all right before I let you go um I want you to hop in DeLorean go 88 miles an hour go back to 2015 and show yourself the picture of Bronco menal standing in front of a ium in front of a Utah State logo as their new head coach um that we were up there on Monday that was a surreal experience I’m not going to lie for a guy that’s covered uh BYU football and football here in the state of Utah since you know the early 2000s that was a trip man I’m not gonna lie yeah that’s was so surreal uh to to see that and you know I think it says a couple things one that you know I I think back to you know 20 years ago for for Utah State and and there was and you know as well as anyone Scotty but like they had those moments where they were independent and it was Sun Belt and it was whack and big West and just trying to find their their their place in in the college football landscape and you know New Mexico had years with franchon and then Rocky long where they were really successful and to think you know now they’re pluck Utah State’s plucking from a New Mexico it shows that they’ve moved up to a higher tier and it’s a place that can win and Bronco I think people don’t realize that he wants to win at the highest level and I think he’s looking at this job at Utah State where you know New Mexico he probably capped out uh like really that five and seven and now with an ad moving on to Houston uh you know he probably did all he could and and that was an impressive year one for the Lobos but now he goes to Utah State and to add on top of the strange vibes from all of it Utah state in the Pack 12 and it’s just that’s going to be a really good League I think it’s going to be the best league in in the in the you know outside the power conferences moving forward so I it’s a really good spot and I think Broncos is going to do a really solid job of you know consistently making Utah State uh in the upper tier of That League I mean they’ve proven they can be a 10 11 win team maybe you know once every four years but now I think it’s going to be more consistent of eight to nine and then breaking through with that big one so I I it’s it’s still surreal that that picture with him and Holly holding the helmet just kind of it’s it’s it’s just surreal to see that but I think that he’s going to have a lot of success and and I think it’s I think he’ll do well too with uh really you know maintaining rosters and and you know players that are bought into him they will do anything for that guy they are loyal to him I mean by players that former players BYU that I’ve still keep in touch with that plate for him I mean they love the man and I think it’s you know they’re they’re almost going to be Utah State fans now because of it and because of him returning home so I think it’s a really good move for Utah State and I’m just curious I thought it was was interesting commentary that he you know mention he was asked about the BYU and Utah games and I wonder if he would you know want to try to get that BYU series back somehow and if BYU would listen I know BYU you know kind of locked down their non-conference schedules between now and 2030 recently over the summer but uh you wonder if you know homo would make an exception and find something if Bronco wanted to strike it up again because but in the past bronos said at Virginia he had no interest in ever play BYU and they ended up playing that game in 2021 when he was at Virginia but that I thought that was kind of interesting how he acknowledged that’s that’s important to Utah State well Mitch we appreciate you joining us thanks for your time uh KSL sports.com great Insight there’s no offseason anymore when it comes to college football it’s h it’s non-stop with recruiting then transfer portal and everything else that goes along with it man appreciate your time you bet Scotty take care there he is Mitch Harper cougar Insider KSL sports.com
