Manchester United’s clash with Bodo glimp gave us our first real glimpse into Reuben amar’s versatility and it was fascinating the match showcased both the potential and teething problems of implementing a new system so let’s break down exactly what happened even in the buildup amaram tweaked things from the weekend where we had seen delist becoming a second pivot alongside the defensive midfielder allowing the more attacking six to move higher off the pitch today there was a slight tweak as delish was now the single pivot and the goal was simple for delish to draw the pressure initially to then free both of the midfielders to push higher up between the lines but more often because of the pressure that the LIF faced he opted to play it safe and he would played the pass into the wider center backs rather than the midfielders higher up and The Wider center backs could begin moving higher up the pitch but here’s the thing this approach with to LIF is most effective when you’re actually successful at drawing in the pressure but for large portions of the match Bodo were not interested in applying a high press because they had a clear game plan that they believed in for large suedes of the game they sat in a midblock 4141 without much interest in pressing high up meaning that United could shift into the attacking 325 that amarim prefers and here’s the thing despite the score line for long spells bodog glimp were able to force united into long spells of non-threatening [Music] possession that’s because neither the Wingers nor the fallbacks stayed wide and instead bod glimp became this hyper compact unit whose entire goal was to Simply prevent the play through the center both the Winger and the fullbacks would be in line with the man in the half space was the role of the Midfield 3 would be to essentially trap the United pivots in the Bodo glimp shape and make them completely inaccessible again an interesting approach from Amar is that even when his wide center backs have all of the space they tended to remain fixed in these positions rather than moving higher with the ball and the attacking play Maybe amarim is cautious of the Counterattack coming back the other way but against compact sides it could be a good option as on the rare occasions we did see them Drive forwards it drew men out of position creating more space in the center looking at United’s attack distribution shows just how little success they had through the middle so what happened when United attacked the wide regions well it’s safe to say there were two versions of the Reds when they patiently shifted the ball across the Norwegians would simply shift their block across and then apply pressure in The Wider regions without too much issue the second form came when United increased the tempo the huge disadvantage of this hyper compact shape is that the wide areas are completely deserted and amarim kept his wing backs wide so United could use quick switches to find massia in space who would then begin moving up the pitch and when he did he would have options as he could hit the by line and looked across into the well occupied box as Mason Mount and Anthony on the far side were sure to support hland but massa’s interactions with gacho were the clear goal the five versus four advantage against the backline means that the defensive fallback is always at risk of being two versus one down and we saw just that whenever massia received that would be the trigger for gacho to make the run through the half space and he got on the end of the ball to get into dangerous positions in the Box this was good but of course a huge disadvantage is that gacho was often on his weak foot so his crosses didn’t have the pace or the accuracy to cause major problems but there was another disadvantage to this United shape gacho is not a natural number 10 so when United had the ball he often found himself watching the play with his back to goal and facing pressure whenever he did get a touch which is not his natural game [Music] keep this in mind because amarim adapted brilliantly to this in the second but we first need to talk about the weaknesses that United faced the most glaring issue in United’s performance was their vulnerability in transition while amorim’s system looked promising in possession the defensive structure when losing the ball raised serious concerns that Bodo glimp repeatedly exposed although In fairness Bodo glimp were particularly impressive on the break swarming forwards consistently when United were high up in the control 325 shape both of their Sixers and certainly Fernandez would find themselves extremely high up the pitch camped and ready to recycle the ball when it came out occasionally both Fernandez and ugat could be the late Runners into the box to make the difference which did have advantages as we saw in United’s winning goal but it also meant that when defending the other way there were huge gaps in the midfield for the Norwegians to exploit and they would commit numbers makeing it easy to run at the back three with pace which caused United all sorts of problems but we saw a recurring problem that we also covered in amorim’s debut against ipswitch he clearly recognizes the weakness of only having a two in Midfield namely the potential for them to be overloaded and men getting between the lines so to counter this he gets his wider center backs to push high up the pitch if a man is there and of course this leaves a gaping Hall in the defense at least momentarily before United shift to a four and it’s in those transitional moment Ms that we see teams take advantage for Bodo glimps first goal Martinez is drawn high positionally and massia does cover well on this occasion however Bodo pick up the second ball and Martinez is still high so now we have this transitional moment where massia is still wide and Martinez hasn’t recovered allowing Bodo to enter Zone 14 eventually leading to the goal for Bodo Glimpse second we see copy and paste issues Fernandez is not naturally a six and he’s high backing up the press and Martinez follows the attacker deep so the long ball comes into the space vacated and United going behind but the second half saw amorim’s tactical versatility showcased and full and at first it seemed like a subtle like for–like change Dow on for massia but it shifted things defensively as for a spell united shifted to a 4231 with the extra midfielder meaning they could go manto man in the Midfield so now there was less need for a center back to be aggressive pressing but the introduction of doow wasn’t just a personal change it restructured United’s attack doow unlike malasia played in the half Space drawing the fullback in so now it was gacho in the wide space receiving in his natural position and he looked extremely dangerous driving at his man consistently and looking much more of a danger than in the first half this was helped by the fact that D is quick enough in this half space to be a threat and two-footed enough to get crosses in if he did receive the ball in those regions [Music] it was a subtle tweak but one that made United look a whole lot more dangerous and showcased amorim’s Acumen this match highlighted a crucial challenge for United going forward against teams setting up in compact Central blocks which we’ll likely see more of United need to develop Elite wide threat to break them down today showcase both a problem and a potential solution but what did you make of the match drop your thoughts in the comments
