the transfer portal has been open for business since Monday we’ve already seen visits and commitments quarterbacks like Darien Mena transfers to Duke Connor wigman to Houston plus the top interior offensive lineman who you see highlighted there Hunter Zambrano is locked in with Texas Tech so what do these mean what’s next I’m going to ask my friend Chris Hummer the portal expert here to tell us what’s been happening and uh we saw three quarterbacks have found their next schools I mentioned wigman I mentioned Mena but also Thomas castalanos has locked in with Florida State so I ask you who fits best in his next spot I know I’m sure Florida State fans are upset by the way things have kind of played out with their just quarterback situation in general obviously losing a five-star passer as a freshman’s not not an easy blow to kind of deal with as a fan but I actually think Florida State picked a quarterback that fits the system and the team perfectly uh Thomas castalano is somebody that’s intimately familiar with new off coordinator Gus malan Gus Maan helped recruit him to UCF initially um thas castan is somebody that like I know a lot of people like on the power for level viewed as like a potential power for running back if you wanted to go that direction instead he’s one of the most dynamic dual threat quarterbacks in the country and that fits perfectly for what Gus malan likes to do as an offensive coordinator and a play caller um he has had success in his career with mobile passers and Thomas castalanos is about as mobile As It Gets in college football and yeah the Florida state offense is going to have to look a little different in 2024 but when you talk about just scheme fit and you talk about a person who fits the play caller perfectly I don’t think you can get a better match than Thomas castalanos and Gus malan um it’s exactly what Florida State needed for the play caller they hired I also think we just showed video of him eating W’s which they uh Florida State fans are used to seeing from their quarterback so I don’t know maybe some jamus Winston Vibes there um definitely a good fit there though which was the question um you said you like castalanos at Florida State but you also said that Dari and Mena at Duke is the biggest portal move so far why do you say that well I think it’s two things one Darren Mena is very expensive like I I don’t know if the numbers are GNA fully come out but like Duke went all in on Darien menah which is very interesting when you think about the context of who Daren men is essentially replacing which is Malik Murphy like Duke won nine games this year in Manny Diaz’s first season Malik Murphy was a big part of that and it was honestly really surprising really the only surprise move of the portal so far this cycle was uh Malik Murphy going in and based on the way that happened and Mena so quickly committing to Duke you can kind of connect the dots there and think that maybe like at a little more with Duke moving on than Murphy moving on and that’s a shock and it’s also going to send shock waves for the rest of the cycle Malik Murphy’s now an attractive option for a team like Auburn which he just finished a visit for and if you’re Duke and you went all in on two lane quarterback Daren Mena like it better work like you know what I mean he was really good for two lane this year he was awesome as a red shirt freshman uh scouting and personal sces across the country really like what Daren Mena brings to the table um I think he’s probably fits a little bit better what Duke wants to do at quarterback but he better be really good to justify uh moving on from a guy like Malik Murphy so I think that’s what makes it the most compelling move of the cycle yeah 100% And could be biggest uh financially too as you laid out as well um speaking of big finan moves and this rivalry in General on the other side of things North Carolina has introduced bill bellich as their next head coach which means that free agency starts right now bill so how do you plan or how does he plan on attacking the portal do you think it’ll be interesting we’ve never really seen a person like Bill bich step into college football I guess Deion Sanders might be the closest like comparison just because of like the celebrity status that both carry in way but like Bill bich is somebody that famously with the Patriots looked for Bargains in free agency cut players uh when he thought they were over the hill and like drafted very shrewdly and college football’s a very interesting game uh there’s been reports that he has $20 million in nil to work with if that’s the case that’s like a top five salary cap essentially in college football so he has plenty of ammunition um so I’m I’m fascinated by how he’s going to handle this and I know player personnel and like scouting sources across the country are too because I’ve gotten a lot of texts about it uh just rationally on paper uh quarterback is a position they’re going to probably have to address Max Johnson can come back off his injury jacobe chrisell can come back after starting the year for them but neither of them were great on the field this season I know for a fact UNCC needs to get offensive and defensive lineman on the door I think that’ll be a heavy position of emphasis uh and I believe their GM Michael Lombardi has said as much on a radio show recently so it’ be very interesting to see how they handle that I think they’re going to have to sign a lot of players in the portal yeah bill is used to free agency but not free agency all the time every single year with every player we’re already seeing players Whatever by the way like it is much different than the NFL very different yeah the the rules if we can even call them rules guidelines as the NCAA likes to say are definitely different but Chris we’re already seeing players who get into the portal commit to a team and then hop back in so that’s something that uh bill belich will have to look forward to uh speaking of teams who are very active in the portal ol Miss and the portal King Lane kein they love to dip in and I think I’ve seen multiple headlines already today of players that ol Miss has already brought in or is bringing in for for some visits so what can we expect from lean kein during this portal cycle given that they just missed out on that college football playoff this year I mean if you want to keep your title you got to stay portal King I guess so I fully expect to be very active in the portal they signed the number two guard in the country uh this morning in Patrick cudas um I think our Matt Zenit broke that this morning and I fully expect them to be in the market for several wide receivers Eric Singleton is somebody that’s a target for Old Miss uh we actually just reported he’s going to visit Texas early next week too and they’ll be in the mix for running backs like Amad Hardy who was a true freshman All-American today they need defensive lineman they already signed one I think they’re going to also try to uh sign the number one player in the portal coming out of Nebraska princewell uh whose brother just had an amazing season for Old Miss as well so they’re going to be very active in the portal uh it’s kind of kin’s brand they recruit really well out of high school but they fill in the gaps and uh essentially win their roster um in December so uh I fully expect them to be near the top of the portal rankings
