we have some words from Edmonton’s President we have a game in Vegas that didn’t go as Oilers games have conventionally gone in the last little while and we have some best on best news as well I’ll get to all that and more but first please hit the Subscribe button to help our Channel out uh starting things off today Oilers CEO and president of hockey Ops Jeff Jackson gave an update to Bob staer last night about a contract situation because Evan Bard will of course be without a contract after this season Jackson expressed how big of a fan is big of a fan he is about the player when he said quote the way he plays the game he’s at the top end of D in the league and the way buard produces he’s no doubt amongst the top end of the NHL’s dmen he broke out big time last year but as all Oilers fans are going to be aware bu Bard’s been subject to criticism in a few different forms this year and Jackson did address that when he was talking to stoffer he said quote the game is full of mistakes with Evan as a Young D sometimes those mistakes are more evident there’s a bigger Spotlight on them so there’s more tendency to criticize him and when Jackson says uh Spotlight there as part of that quote he he obviously is talking about the fact that uh there’s a there’s a bigger focus on mistakes made by defenseman just because of the position they play buard plays 23 minutes a game he spends a lot of the time with the puck on his stick he makes a lot of passes and when you’re a defenseman you’re in your own Zone mistakes are going to come with the territory but with that being said buard was drafted 7 years ago so constantly dismissing mistakes as youthful inexperience Rings a little Hollow when you’re talking about a guy who’s 25 years old now and and players are obviously constantly growing and improving in the NHL and bushard is going to continue to do so but with that being said this contract negotiation is happening now and the dollar values we’re talking about are are coming up in anticipation of improvement that’s promised to come from bushard if you think bushard is going to end up in the top end of all the NHL defensemen if he’s going to end up being the kind of guy to win a Norris Trophy or two that’s great but he’s not that guy right now so paying him substantially more than what some player comparisons are making is a mistake and taking a look around the league uh you can take a look at plenty of defenseman Who You’d maybe be inclined to to to start with in search of contract comparisons but guys like kale Ma and Quinn Hughes Adam Fox and and Brock Faber even they signed their big ticket as their second contract buard already signed deal number two Bard’s on his third contract right now so you’re looking at different defenseman because guys like Charlie makoy and Rasmus dullen are more the APT comparisons you’re going to find because those are two guys who also signed their big ticket on their third deal after much like Bucher did signing a bridge deal coming out of their ELC so let’s talk about those two guys for a second because I I think if you’re Edmonton the makoy number is the one you want $9.5 million a season and as part of this negotiation I don’t think you go any higher than the delene like that’s that’s the highest you can go is $11 million uh D’s deal went into effect this year paying him $11 million a season starting now and if you’re the Oilers in my opinion you don’t want be going there because to me delene what delene does for Buffalo I don’t know if there are many defenseman in the NHL with that same level of impact on their teams Quinn Hughes and Vancouver comes to mind is really maybe the only other one you can put kale Mar in that category especially this year uh Bard’s 25 if you end up overpaying the guy by a few million dollars at the end of the day this is a bet you obviously have to make of your Edmonton so fingers cross Bowman and Jackson can get this deal done at a number that works for them that works for team that works for the team continuing to have flexibility again obviously all Oilers fans are a little bit nervous because we just saw them sh out the contract they did to darn Nell nurse and again the contract I’m advocating for Evan Bard to make is barely more than nurse’s deal so that’s definitely going to factor into these negotiations as well the four nations Faceoff roster Buzz is officially going to now shift from speculation about the rosters to question in The rosters and doubting them because the announcements of The rosters came out today and as I’ve been saying for quite some time now Conor McDavid is the only is the only Oiler name to appear on Team Canada yeah of late it’s been Evan Bard who’s been the focus and while everybody’s going to be very quick to point out some names that they’ll feel are inferior to buard that did make this Canadian roster uh Canada at the end of the day everybody needs to remember are building a team right now and they’re building a team same as everybody else in this tournament and you can hope that seven much alike Point perame defensemen can all come into one team and do what’s needed to them or you can take players to play specific roles the truth is that Canada have never shied away from taking more defensively minded defensemen to best on best tournaments you look at the Canadian roster Travis sanheim and Colton pero are guys there to play a role that the team feels Evan Bard is not capable of playing no much how no no matter how much better offensively better in possession buard is than guys like sanheim and pero now if Canada don’t score enough goals to win this tournament this choice is going to look pretty bad but at the end of the day the only way the selection of this Canadian team is going to end up avoiding criticism altogether is by winning this tournament and whether or not it’s fair Canada not winning a hockey tournament means Canada failed and Canada failing is just going to mean a lot of criticism Bard was the one recently that was you know the the subject of plenty of debate coming into the announcement this week Zack Heyman and Ryan nen Hopkins were probably far enough away from the team by now that their omissions wouldn’t have been anything too surprising but two Oilers will be playing for Sweden one of them was obvious Matias eckholm of course being the obvious one but Victor arvidson was more of a surprising ad and I’ll have to kind of talk a little bit about arvit making Sweden in the same way that I talked about bushard not making Canada because much like comparing Bard to the likes of sanheim or pero comparing arvidson to snubs from the Sweden team isn’t going to tell the whole story especially when you compare the statistics because uh Aron’s value on team Sweden if you had to ask me is probably going to be rooted more in the effect more in the fact that this is going to end up being one of the more experienced hockey players that Sweden took Fabian zerland and William eckan have been significantly more productive of late than arvitson but again Aron’s potentially more suited to the rule that they’re picking a guy to fill than ekan and zerland simple as that if you missed the game last night I’ll get you the highlights of Vegas and Edmonton’s Tuesday night matchup Aiden Hill was really sharp to keep the game tied early on Vegas marched down the ice in the first period to score a little bit of an Ong goal it was barbash shev’s cross ice pass attempt that was was blocked by buard but it redirected straight back to barbashev who managed to slide it under Stewart Skinner and in to make it one- nothing for the team that won the 2023 second round between these two sides uh both goalies ended up the focus from there and both goalies made some excellent saves steuart Skinner’s glove stop off Thomas hurdle was probably the best the Oilers golender was asked to produce but Hill was fantastic to help Vegas over the Finish Line he ends up making 28 saves including the best of which which was probably his right pad stop off of Ryan Hopkins in front here all in all the barbashev goal stood to be the winner and Hills 28 saves on the night earned him the shut out earned him the victory Edmonton will look to bounce back they’ve now got three games on home mice over the next week in the form of Columbus St Louis and Tampa Bay and for a little bit of Revenge they they will get the Vegas golden knights once more they’ll get them again 10 days from now for a rematch that’s all for me today thanks for watching
