🕵️♂️ Transcript:
we’ve got breaking news out of the NHL where the New York Rangers have just made eigor shesterkin the highest paid goalie in NHL history that’s according to multiple reports shurin has agreed to an 8-year extension worth $92 million so he is now signed in the Big Apple through the 2032 33 season the former bezant Trophy winner is currently in a sixth year with the Rangers and has tallied a 908 save percentage this season which is wild let’s welcome in our hockey analyst Pete Blackburn to discuss this news um Pete when you heard that shuren is now going to be the highest paid goalie in NHL history and the numbers with eight years worth $92 million do that feel right were you expecting more less where was your head out when you heard the news yeah a little conflicted it certainly wasn’t surprising that he’s the highest paid goal tender in NHL history we all knew that was going to happen it feels crazy to say it but I’m kind of surprised that the number came in uh the aav as low as it did I was expecting like 12 at minimum so I think it’s a good deal for the Rangers but the bigger question is and I think from like a philosophical perspective does anybody or should anybody feel comfortable giving that much money on the cap to a goenda tile and on a year-to-year basis how much it can change from a goal tender even of a guy like eigor shurkin who is so good and if anybody’s going to get this kind of contract it should be eigor but man paying a goendale half million doll per year puts you in at a real risk of being uh stuck with an Albatros deal so uh I think that the Rangers were kind of painted into into a corner here like they don’t really have any other option especially when you look at at where they’re at right now they’re trying to contend for a Stanley Cup they don’t defend super well like they’re 30th in the league in scoring chances allowed they’re 31st in the league in high danger chances allowed so they bleed opportunities from a defensive perspective and the only reason that they’re a competitive hockey team right now is because of Igor shurkin and so they’re rewarding him for that but now how do you build the roster around a goendale a. half million that’s their problem and that’s what they have to figure out starting next year um and Pete so to your point you don’t think this is like a new pressent we’re going to see for goalies is it just specific to this situation because of the Rangers what they’re trying to do and how great shurin has been for them or do you think we start to see goalies in the future get paid more and more and more I’m not going to say Never Say Never but like you have a generational Talent here in eager shurin that makes the Rangers comfortable handing out this kind of money I’m not going to say that there’s not going to be a team down the line that’s so desperate for goal tending like the Florida Panthers were when they gave Sergey baros that $10 million deal uh per year everybody laughed at that deal when they handed it out it looked bad for a few years but now the Panthers and bosski have a Stanley Cup title and so I don’t think any contract is bad when a a goenda title I I just think that I would feel very uncomfortable as a general manager handing out that kind of money to a goendale Ley cup in their situations making close to league minimum over the past couple of years and how many well-paid goenda their con underperformed compared to their contracts in recent years I would feel a hard time handing out that kind of money but again eigor is that kind of guy he is him he’s making that money and he deserves it so Pete you mentioned of course the Rangers trying to win a Stanley Cup and they they’ve come close and we’ve seen a lot of other players not just goalies get paid a lot of money on the same team you see dry Sidle and Conor McDavid who went all the way to the Cup last year but but failed to actually Win It Austin Matthews um and William neander as well eigor shurin if we see you know and you have panan as well on that roster are you worried with that type of money and those players that’s going to fall into the same Trend where to your point you can’t really build a full roster to go win the Stanley Cup does that worry you at all that he’s getting paid this much money and then if we have paner on the roster as well making 11 point six no not in this specific case because our Tami panan has been so good for the Rangers and so has eigor schurin and specifically in chirin’s case you can’t win in this league without good goal tending especially when you get down to the playoffs like you need good goal tending unless you have a truly unbelievable team like I look at the Colorado Avalanche a few years ago when they won the Stanley Cup they had mediocre goal tending but the rest of the team was so good that it didn’t really matter I think that’s sort of the exception to the rule you need gending to win in this league so you know if I look at that list and and you have eagor making a bunch of money and panan making a bunch of money I I don’t necessarily have a major problem with it just because those two guys perform up to their contracts they’re not saddling their teams but really like Chris jury’s challenge now is to find bargain deals around those guys to solidify the roster solidify the lineup and put together a Stanley cupw worthy team and Pete there’s been a lot of news for for the Rangers because of course uh trouba that whole deal going to Anaheim now shurkin is is going to be in the net and you and you see here the trade details with the Rangers and Anaheim for for trouba um what is the vibe and I don’t know if you’ve had a chance to dive into it because this has all happened within the last couple of hours but what’s the vibe around the Rangers fan base with all this change extensions their their Captain going elsewhere um for the Rangers as again they are are trying to to win a Stanley Cup yeah I would be surprised if there was not a parade in the streets in New York right now and that’s no disrespect to Jacob trouba but like Rangers fans have been complaining about Jacob trouba for a long time and he is was certainly getting overpaid I don’t think that this shurin contract extension happens today if they don’t take trouba’s $8 million off the cap next year so like number one they move trouba out that Saga is over and it’s a big win for Chris rury to just dump that that contract on Anaheim and not have to retain money or you know strap a first round pick to get him out of town at full price so that’s a win in of itself but then to keep eager shesterkin who is the number one priority right now for the New York Rangers and the number one key to success for that team I I think this is a double win-win situation for the Rangers and their fans probably ecstatic and the atmosphere at MSG the their next home game is going to be unbelievable I think Pete we certainly appreciate it joining us here talking about more New York Rangers news as it’s come down that eigor shurin is going to be in the Big Apple through the 2032 2033 season getting a look at some notable games on the ice tonight speaking of the rangers they are in action against the Penguins at 7:30 Eastern uh the Ducks trouba’s new team they’re hosting the Minnesota Wild at 10 Eastern along with the caps and the leaves the Kraken and the devils and the stars in gold Golden Nights also at 10 Eastern on the ice
