[Applause] hello everyone welcome back to on the flights here recapping day five of the world jior championship happening in Ottawa onario swap right into today starting with the scores from today’s games and we have quite a few interesting games here right where coming into today you are expecting the first one and you can see not quite what we were expecting to be a decent margin victory for Slovakia and to be honest it was a pretty well played game by Slovakia up until the final five minutes of their game where they went on a power play and you think you know you’re up two goals on a major P penalty you’re going to be able to very least pass the puck ground and not give up two short-handed goals right right you’d think you’d really think but no we’re going to make turnovers at the blue line that Kazakhstan who wasn’t really ever in the game you you could even see it the way that they were playing not pulling their goenda half left despite having possession in the offensive zone they weren’t necessarily playing the game to win because they didn’t think that they were going to and Slovakia turns two pucks over at the Blue Line kistan comes down the side and scores both times tying this game forcing it to overtime despite Sakia being up 3 nothing at the start of the first period so you know yes Sakia won this game doesn’t really matter they weren’t going to go any higher in the standings they weren’t going to go any lower right so in the grand scheme of it overtime was good for them yes but at the same time right this wasn’t the performance Slovakia wants going into a tough quarterfinal matchup for whoever they’re going to play and we’ll get to that quarterfinal opponent of probably who it’s going to be uh in just a little bit but you know this that’s not the sort of momentum you want to be building heading into an already tough quarterfinal match up where you’ll have to play a team you know like Canada the US Finland maybe laia um it’ll be a tough matchup and if you’re going to play like that the way you did in those final five minutes not to mention on the power play of all things you’re going to struggle against whoever you’re playing so for Slovakia cleaning it up is going to be important for them to continue their success in this CU they’ve played pretty well so far you know they have they’ve played a de they played a pretty good game against Sweden not quite the result they wanted they played a decent game against the checks not the result obviously they wanted and then you know they played probably one of their better games against Switzerland and they got the result they were looking for 2-1 Victory right so for Slovakia you know is it time to panic probably not but it’s a tough game for them to be able to be up you know you 4-1 right you’re up 4-1 and you find a way to squander the lead against a team that was relegation bound from the very start of this tournament their team does not match up Slovakia’s team on paper in the slightest you know we talk we talked a lot about the teams on paper and and yes I mean yes paper doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things but Kazakhstan hasn’t looked good on the ice either yes they played a decent game I guess against Sweden really Sweden just didn’t play a good game you know czechia killing them was more we expected and today’s game against Slovakia 54 in overtime not what you were expecting right so the problem with this tournament as of right now is not a lot of it’s making sense and if you are Switzerland who Kazakhstan plays tomorrow in a winner take all relegation game you know winner winner will stay up and play in the quarterfinals loser will have to play Germany and we’ll get to them in just a little bit in the relegation game I wouldn’t be confident for Switzerland heading into this cuz Switzerland’s played pretty good so far in this tournament but kazakhstan’s also shown that they’re able to contend in games stay in games for long enough to be able to make comebacks and and we’ll flip it over now to the second game of the day between laia and Germany and that was the exact same thing that happened in the Kazakhstan game where you know laia just kind of hung around in this one Germany couldn’t quite put that finishing blow in four to3 as your final in overtime here you saw the the winning goal off the off the open but this was a game that Germany had the Reigns on the entire game and then sorted started to let it slip towards the end unfortunately you know the the two2 goal put Germany in a rough spot because they had to win in regulation coming into this one and what does that mean when you’re in a tie game is you’re basically down a goal and for Germany they played it like they would they were down a goal you know they pulled their goalie with a minute left on the power play I think was three minutes left in the game and so they thought you know what this is our chance right we’re going to try and win this game right here sure enough the face off gets one the puck gets flung out down the zone and it’s a three 3-2 hockey game for Lafia and then of course a couple minutes later or a couple basically minutes but really seconds later off the actual game clock Germany ties the game at three and we’re right back to the same situation we were a couple minutes ago before Lafia put it in the empty net 3-3 once again Germany has to pull their goalie and unfortunately just could not find the back of the net despite numerous chances to do so you know feldberg once again was the key to success for laia and also the way that they play the game right they’re not going to allow high quality chances which is exactly why feldberg especially in this tournament has been looking so good lately is because the quality of opportunities aren’t really to the level that you’re expecting a 55 shot game to be CU a lot of them are perimeter shot games especially against Canada we saw them really fail to penetrate the middle of the ice in this German game very similarly where a lot of their shots were kind of flank shots uh looking for rebounds and sure you know second second saves third saves are tough but at the same time felber’s been really good with those limiting those other opportunities that come from an outside shot you know taking her in rebounds that’s the key for Lafia here to continue their success uh 4 to3 Victory today a big two points for Lafia and you know for laia I don’t think anyone would have expected I think it’s their first time ever in tournament history with two uh two wins in a in a World Junior tournament and the way I look at it now is they have a game coming up against Finland where and we’ll talk about this in a little bit when we get to the standings and the wh ifs they very well could come second in group a and I think a lot of people including myself uh when we made our prediction video had Lafia out in the relegation or not out in the relegation game but didn’t even make it uh to the quarterfinals let alone being the second seed in group a after a long long tournament but still we’re at this point now where for Lafia you know two big wins right the games that matter we talked about it yesterday the biggest game for Lafia was today’s game the 30th against Germany and then they found a way along the way and what in my opinion one of the reasons why they ended up winning this game was because they were able to win against Canada right those big two points the reason why Germany had to pull their goalie when they were in a tie game you know that’s the trick for Lafia in this tournament is just hanging around and and they don’t need to win games they don’t need to dictate the pace of play and we’ve seen that the last couple games that they’ve been trying that they’ve really stuck to their system because their system works and that’s the that’s really the trick to all of this is for Lafia you know their systems working at this tournament and they will continue to use that system until it fails and they’ll have a tough game against Finland who employs a very similar system to them but at the same time it’s going to be a tight game we already saw Germany struggle against we already saw Finland struggle against Germany right a 3-1 victory for them but at the same time it’s a toss up right it’s another one of those games and we will talk about it closer to so I don’t want to take all of it so we’ll flip over now to the news uh for Slovakia with the near choke you know they choke a 4-1 lead I mean what do you want me more to say right where a near choke game Sakia ends up getting the two points that they need they put themselves over uh and they lock up third spot right they weren’t going any higher in the standings they could only go down they won the game today which means that they’re safe in third spot so I guess it’s a success in the long run but not quite the momentum you want to build for Kazakhstan it’s the comeback right they came back from an impressive Victory or an impressive impressive deficit right so you look at them they’re building confidence in this tournament each game that you let them stick around for is one more one more opportunity for them to eventually win a game and put some pressure on the other teams in this tournament and you know Kazakhstan I think a lot of people including myself this was the team I had relegated all of a sudden looks like a team that might be able to beat Switzerland tomorrow and aoid relegation right so in in kazakhstan’s case just kind of sticking around right playing similar to laia if you can stick around long enough in a game you never know what’s going to happen you might even score two short-handed goals along the way right so uh the next piece is for Germany they are headed to the relegation game losing Lafia today they needed to win in regulation did not quite do that so of course heading to the relegation game which will be on January second at 11:00 a.m. so that’s the one for Germany obviously now becomes the must-win right you lose sent back down division 1A replaced by Denmark but if you win you stay up another year and I do expect them to beat Kazakhstan in the long run um but of course time Still Remains to be seen what goes on there uh for laia the big wins they got two of them already we’ll see if they can continue their success tomorrow against Finland and then for Switzerland the 1999 special so the last time every team in the tournament had at least one point was 1999 there’s a chance if Switzerland can get one point against Kazakhstan which I mean if we’re being logical right it’s pretty likely that Kazakhstan or that switzland gets a point we’ll see that for the first time in tournament history since 1999 uh for the world juniors at least so obviously an impressive impressive feat to see that and the last time that that happened uh for the record was seven games played and each team ended up getting a point so you know for for all these teams it shows the progress of this tournament you know that that Talent parody is starting to get a lot closer and it’s one of it’s one of the fun Parts I guess about this tournament is that every year there’s a new batch of players coming in and I don’t think anyone predicted laia beating beating Canada you know Finland upsetting uh the US was another one Kazakhstan almost beating Slovakia that was another one right where we just have time after time uh impressive game after impressive game and teams that aren’t expected to contend with each other all of a sudden contending with each other so in the grand scheme of it obviously a cool sort of piece of history when we get to be a part of it uh we look to see if Switzerland’s able to get a point tomorrow uh against Kazakhstan cuz of course that would mean history for this tournament we’ll talk about that tomorrow if it does happen but now we’ll flip it over to the standings and we’re going to start today we going to start with group a today we’re going to start with Group B Because Group B is a lot more simple so in group b we have Sweden and checks both in first place with nine points each third place is Slovakia they can’t move in fourth place we have Kazakhstan one overtime loss they get one point from that and Switzerland with three regulation losses so the deal is for tomorrow if Switzerland is able to beat Kazakhstan they will go to fourth place if Kazakhstan beats Switzerland they will remain in fourth place nice and easy doesn’t matter overtime doesn’t matter anything if they if whoever wins that game will be in fourth place whoever loses that game will be sent to the relegation game again they will play Germany in that one and then the top spot for Sweden and czechia the winner of that game will also stay up so the winner will be first place in group b the loser will be second place remember first in group b plays fourth and a two of B plays three and a two of C or uh three of B plays two and a and four in B plays one in a so lots to play for right where you look at sort of this these top three killer lineup for group a where I mean yes and we’ll get to that group a in a second but Sweden and Czech big game right you want to be the top spot cuz you likely you’re going to get to play laia and you’d rather play laa then Finland then the us then Canada and I know Finland and I know laia is hot but at the same time just with the talent level we haven’t seen the best games in my opinion from any of those three teams and likely they will bring that out I think we’ll see probably the best game from Canada in the US uh tomorrow of course time will tell there but Canada the US going to be a good one there um and now let’s talk about it right so the to this one for Canada and the US is winner winner takes the top spot so we’ll start here in regulation right so the US can win in regulation the only team that can beat Canada is Finland win so if the US wins in regulation right they will go to 10 points Canada remains with seven so if F then wins in regulation they will be above them if Lafia wins in regulation they will also be above them because Lafia holds the tiebreaker over Canada because they beat them right so that’s going to be the trick to this is for Finland they have the ti break over the us because they beat the US for laia they have the tiebreak over Canada because of course laia beat Canada Lafia and Finland will play each other so the way it’s going to work there is the winner of that will be above each other so for example if Lafia were to beat Finland uh in say overtime if Lafia beats Finland overtime then Lafia will likely be third and fourth depending on the result of the us cuz once again us holds over holds the advantage over laia um but Lafia can’t if that Lafia wins in overtime then they can’t catch Canada because they only have two points Finland will only have one point of of that matchup so they’ll be at six both teams will be at six Lafia will be third fourth will be Finland and then the winner of Canada us will be one and two so in the grand scheme of it what you’re really looking for out of tomorrow’s game is if it’s regulation what’s going to end up happening is the only way if so Finland wins in regulation uh Canada and the US will be likely going to be one and three depending on if the game goes to overtime if it goes to overtime and with Finland winning in regulation the only way that Canada can if Canada gets a point they will be above Finland no matter what in that in the overtime period the US is the team that will be at risk assuming Finland wins in regulation La fi wi’s in regulation Canada is the team at risk um otherwise it the easiest way to think about this is you know Canada us one two if Finland wins which is likely so we we’ll take the most obvious scenario just look out for remember Finland tiebreaker over US Canada has to play anyway and Finland gets those three points you got to make sure Canada can get above Finland in terms of the points so if you want to make it real easy on yourself you can follow us on Twitter we’ll break it all down as soon as that first game is done between laia and Finland uh because there are a lot of wh ifs to come and I mean for Germany already done they’re in the relegation game nice and easy fifth place locked up in group B third place is locked up with Slovakia and the other four spots in group a the top four will still be decided one and two and four and five are still to be sided in group b uh depending on tomorrow’s games which is December 31st so at 12:00 p.m. we have Kazakhstan versus Switzerland and I think this will be a really good game I think it’s a surprisingly good game um at the same time I expect Switzerland to dominate this one but I think I’ve said that about every game so far at this tournament and been wrong so keep an eye on this one don’t be surprised starts to get away for c for Switzerland take Kazakhstan out early don’t let them kind of dwell cuz when they start to dwell that’s when they build confidence like Lafia did like the Kazakhstan did today and they slowly but surely start to score goals so Switzerland take him out early and you’ll be just fine for Kazakhstan try and stick around as long as possible and find your opportunities to put the pocket in the back of the net 230 we have Finland versus laia and this one uh it’s going to be a good one right and coming into this tournament I would have told you that Finland was the lock for this game we haven’t seen a great finish team so far we haven’t seen a we’ve seen a pretty good and a very confident lafian team who’s trusting their system who’s winning games through their system don’t be surprised to see Lafia run away with this one but at the same time for Finland we started talked about it already take Lafia out early once they’re out it’s very hard for them to come back third game 5:00 checks and sweds and this is once again going to determine the top spot in group b where for for czechia you know they had a real good tournament so far Sweden has had a niffy one so we’ll see if the hot hand is going to win this one or if Sweden is able to win based on Talent you know they have the better team Sweden does we’ll see if they’re able to use it in this one and one other thing I will mention Otto Stenberg was H at practice today we’ll see if he’s able tomorrow likely we’ll hear whether he’s good to go for the game against the Jacks and then at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time your game of the Day Canada versus the USA the determine the top spot in group a and potentially if everything works out the way it’s supposed to work out the team that will be in third place probably going to end up playing the loser of Sweden and CIA so we’ll see here obviously a lot to play for for Canada and the US hoping to see a very impressive performance by both these teams who have had a rough tournament to say the least you know Canada had a real good start against Finland struggled mightily against latia struggled again against Germany us right they’ve had an interesting road too where they’ve beat Germany they’ve beat ltia you know performances right not great ones but they’ve done enough to win games and then they lose to Finland right where I don’t think a lot of people had that one on the docket right so for Canada and the US big two games today or or tomorrow and we’ll see which US team comes see which Canada team comes if I had to guess it’s probably going to be the US uh just with the lack of Firepower we’ve seen from Canada so far I have to think the US is probably going to take it um but we’ll see right because the Canadians have played a real good defensive game so far through this tournament we’ll see if they’re able to flip on the switch and win offensively because the trick for Canada is to play physically the US has struggled physically all tournament long um so that’s what we got for tomorrow for tomorrow’s games and now we’ll go to the live questions so if you have not already be sure to follow us on Twitter at onthly 1515 as we do post a live uh question pool basically where we get your input on the on the day so we have two comments today first off one from Kenny Kaminsky who says who has been the best player so far so for me I’m going to take feldberg from laia and not necessarily the best players I want to try and take players that have made an impact on their team where if you’re looking at most valuable feldberg from Lafia the goener has been excellent right he’s been the reason why they’ve been where they are right where Germany had I think 36 Shots tonight in that Canada game there was 55 plus the eight in overtime and shootout so in the grand scheme of it you know for felber’s impressive player and probably my biggest standout so far uh from laia and then the best player in Group B in my eyes dber dori’s won Axel Sandy pel those are the two players that have really caught my eye on the other side of the group um but at the same time right you could you can nit pick all you want my eyes felber has been very similar to what Adam gion um was the last couple years for Slovakia um just that goaler that’s back stopped teams to nearly beating an upsetting teams like Canada right where we think about it back to 23 where um we had the the overtime game in the quarterfinals with Slovakia versus Canada and Gyan was the reason why they got as far as they did and so in the grand scheme of it I’m taking felberg is probably my best player so far um but for me it comes from the fact that he’s been the most impactful best player dorski uh Axel sanding pel for those two teams as well so um you can obviously there’s lots of other great players at this tournament but for me those are my biggest standouts and then we go to the second one from today from Drew feltom who says after a few days of playing this tournament which team do you see getting relegated and getting replaced by Denmark for the 2026 World Juniors so for me I have to say it’s going to be Kazakhstan I I find it very difficult to believe anything other than that you know Germany has played probably one of the best tournaments I’ve seen for the results they’ve had right where they have you know four losses to account for one and overtime but they held Canada to a three- nothing game they held the us through two and a or a period and a half to 3-2 a 3-2 game uh they held Finland to a 3-1 game and then they lose an overtime to Lafia right so tough tough losses for Germany in this tournament so far um and then for Switzerland I I expect them to beat Kazakhstan so I’m going to take Kazakhstan to be the loser of that relegation game on on December 2nd or on January 2nd rather so in my eyes Kazakhstan is the team that’s going to end up being relegated but it really could be anyone it’s very hard to tell this early on um especially from what we saw from Kazakhstan today and Slovakia sort of letting the game go at the very end it it’s it’s sort of a reminder that anything can happen at this tournament especially for teams you count out early um so we’ll see tomorrow what happens in that Switzerland game I expect the Swiss to win but at the same time you truly never know if you made it this far in the video thank you for watching if you like to drop a like if you you’re subscribing tell all your friends leave a comment down below your thoughts on day five of the world Jam
