[Music] chat at the end of this first test match in the Border gaska Trophy and dare I say it in spite of being an Indian supporter like a lot of you are a scarcely believable result take a look at what’s happened here over 4 days when it all started India 70 OD for six you said ah there we go again bowled out for 150 other Australia B magnificently but nitish RI rishab pun there was a little partnership there that was very handy and then came the big Turning Point bueras spell on the first evening 104 was all that Australia managed then that opening partnership between K Rahul and yashaswi jwal to helped India go to 487 for six declared including that 100 from verat kohle and then late on the third day India managed to knock over a couple of Australian wickets and in spite of some resistance 238 all out the reason I said scarcely believable is there’s a great son of Western Australia alongside us Adam gilchris who’s played a lot of Perth test matches and he’ll tell you Australia do not lose in Perth India done it once before the Gil it might have been your penultimate test 20078 in Perth it was indeed yeah hello to you harsh it um it was yeah I did play in a losing test match over at the Wacker uh but I don’t remember it being well that loss or any of the other losses that India have inflicted on Australia on these Shores being so convincing so commanding and such a dominating performance as you said in the opening there um from the moment really that uh jper Boomer got ball in hand India looked a little bit vulnerable in the first Innings with bat in hand but once uh bura LED his team out there uh the the tie changed and they never look back so comprehensive I think the the largest Victory by an Indian team in on Australian soil it is indeed and some of you might be saying if you looked at India’s performance in Australia and recent times their last 10 test matches it is lost 214 what’s the big deal about winning here in Perth well it was a huge deal winning in uh in Brisbane last time but as I said Australia’s record at this opta stadium is played for 1 14 by the way Australia’s record in day night game at at the a over where you’re headed next is is played 717 but tell me Gilly did you see it coming first of all I mean I I don’t know who you had favorites going in I actually thought on hom ground Australia started favorites but did you see this coming something as as dramatic as this no no like you and like many I had Australia starting favorites uh home conditions experienced bowling lineup uh India coming out of a 3-0 loss so a batting order that was a little bit vulnerable statistically given the the last few months of cricket but I guess on reflection you need to spend more time looking at the conditions that they were batting in the opposition uh the type of pitches they were being challenged on uh in their home conditions so probably needed to throw the form book out and Australia hadn’t played test match cre since March uh so it was hard to tell what sort of uh form guide they should have written about them um but it but yeah in all I think Australia start started favorites throwing in also the Personnel changes that India had to make they had to rush in well wasn’t rush in but they uh drafted in from the from the India R tour pakal uh they bought over uh kale Rahul who wasn’t in the original touring Squad um they had to play two debutants which was uh amazing to see two young players come out and they themselves had big impact in this game so uh you I don’t think you could have picked it from the beginning but gee it was convincing and it was it was terrific to watch it was a really entertaining performance to pick one thing India did right because India is one of the very few countries that seems to come to Australia and do well as looking at some of the records I talked about the 2 42 record 21 uh two loss 412 draws you look at all the other countries Australia have won 19 I think and I’ve just lost one and that was only recently to Shamar Joseph I mean to the West indes but really to Shamar Joseph what do India do right that other teams don’t do wrong you think is there is the aura about Australia that earlier Generations had is that diminished a little bit is it fast Bowlers coming through is it batters who seem to not mind playing in these conditions can you put a finger on it well there’s a lot to consider really because it’s been uh different circumstances each time casting your mind back to the previous two tours um you particularly going back to the it wasn’t as dramatic uh this test match but I go back to the Adelaide loss of what was it 36 all out whatever the case was yeah that was the number wasn’t it so the turnaround from there that was extraordinary that was uh gigantic in the way they strove forward out of the trenches and out of the depths of Despair in that tour so it wasn’t as dramatic being bow out for 150 but I did ask Jasper uh buom in the postmatch presentation what did he say to his team at that point because clearly that that’s a turning point in this match if you go with the trend and you and you go with the tide the way the tide was moving Australia come out and they end up three three for 180 overnight and they dominate the Test match uh he sounded like he delivered a really inspiring speech to his team he spoke about playing with heart about playing with belief and going out there and just fighting just continuing to trust your skills but fight fight right through and he went out there and led so I’ve seen it from ainka rahan as Captain when he took over after veret went home that last tour he just seemed to go out there and have that fighting Spirit stay in the contest y jwell a duck in the first Innings get out in the second Innings and just find a way to survive and that’s what you have to do in foreign conditions get yourself into the contest so that’s probably without really pinpointing any one individual other than like I did their uh the captain’s speech I think that’s what they did so well they just fought to get into the contest and then once they were in it they found an Australian team that’s probably lacking a little bit of confidence maybe even a little bit of self-belief after having such a a strong period of success there’s a few little fractures there that that who knows if they can be open right up or if they close it quickly in the 9 or 10 days between here and Adelaide Australia but uh but India not only got into the contest they then controlled it I mean I I’ve been coming to Australia now for for far too long I first came here in 91 India lost that series 40 came in 99 India lost that series 30-0 came in 2003 India finally won a test match in Adela 2007 the series was lost so for me to see an Indian team come to Australia and win a series is huge I mean I remember in in Melbourne I actually I’ve said this before on this program Gil I don’t do this normally I went up to just um took a selfie at at at the MCG in in 1718 in in 2018 um since then India won a few games but to come here to the opta stadium where India nobody has beaten Australia is is is feeling I mean in spite of coming here for so many years to come to Australia and see an Indian team win a test match in Australia is still very special that 2008 season by the way was the only tour that wasn’t a happy tour because of all that had happened in s in in Sydney just before and I’ll tell you what happened after that test match uh both teams went to uh to Adela the day before the Adela test match I requested uh Gilly for an interview and he was very kind we did this interview on just walking across the Adel oal talking about his future what he wanted to see from the game and he talked about how he the were goals he wanted to achieve and he retired the next day I remember that very you didn’t you didn’t drive me into retirement harer don’t worry about that but hey I I want to flip that question around you you say and rightly so you’ve experienced more tours uh than any of the cricketers by coming out here and covering what what do you see in the change from from those early days to through to the 2000s and now into this lineup but anything noticeable for you in the 990s Gilly I think there was an acceptance that Australia is a difficult country to come and that you’re likely to lose here and when you come with that point of view then suddenly winning is not losing is not such a scary thing because at the back of your mind yeah you think you think you can lose two things changed that I think two results changed that Gillie one was that Kolkata result in 2001 because that was when the winning streak was stopped and I think the Adela test match in 20034 where R got R dvit got the double 100 and India won that test match even though the series was drawn and sudden you thought oh hang on we can actually do this it was part of St was fwell series if you remember that 20034 and and yet after that India India lost 78 India lost 40 in 1112 so it seemed like it was starting again 2018 yes India won but there was a still a feeling there no Steve Smith no David Warner Australia still in pain over what had happened in South Africa 21 was one of the great series of all time but I think this generation there’s a little bit more self-belief my worry for this series was and and I mean it’s still one zero in a five test series that Australia might catch a couple of Indian players at towards the tail end of that careers but that hasn’t happened ky ky got got 100 but let’s talk a little bit about about this game in particular Gilly I thought the big Turning Point came late on the first day with that bura spell now you’ve seen so many cricketers over the years great cricketers whether they’re Indian whether they’re overseas you’ve played some of the great cricketers what separates bumra from most of them is it just unusual just unusual action or is there something else about him well I think talking to the the current players that are facing him yeah that is the first point that needs to be raised and it’s clear and obvious to the eye that unique action um that said he has been around a while he’s not new I remember facing lassi MinGa for the first time when you he was new onto the scene That’s Unique it’s different and it takes some adjusting but you play you long enough you’ll come up against these type of Bowlers um more regularly and and you’ve you’ve got to find a way to become accustomed to that so uh I I just think his skill his not only has such a a powerful uh a wonderful Weaponry of skills but then the strength of mind and the decision making of knowing when to execute the different you know subtle changes to to produce a ball that can go in and a ball that can go out and you know looking at his numbers there yeah it was the Turning Point the five Wicket Hall in the first Innings that was uh literally gamechanging and then he came comes out you know at late with the shadows in day two and uh day three sorry and he’s build up to Nathan mcweeney you know take it away take it away take it away three in a row and then ever so subtle change maybe if not any change but the the ability of mine to know when went to strike with a different option and he brings one back in and captures him him in front same again to laber Shan you know the lb WS that he was uh ex extracting on this pitch um you know it’s phenomenal skill so I think that’s yes it’s a unique action they talk about getting the the trainers the coaches get the Wanger you know the flicker to try to replicate that sort of almost hyperextended arm that um that just it it has that little bit of flick and flex in it the wrist uh but really I think it’s as much about his strength of mind and his decision making process with within his own bowling and he capped him beautifully one of one of the factor that India would be very happy about is the return to form of Muhammad SJ because he was going through a phase where he didn’t he just seemed to have lost the nip you wonder I mean he he he was coming out of I think had Deni fever and as someone who had Deni fever I’m not an athlete but it still took me a long time to get out of that maybe he’s finally Shrugged all that aside because I thought he was magnificent in the second Innings Pat comings that was that was a misadventure uh towards the end of yesterday but getting huaja out early I think that was a huge blow because quaja bats time Gilly as you know but then getting Steve Smith out I think it was from my point of view Gilly it was important for two reasons one is Ste if Steve Smith is back in form he lift the Australian change room so to get Steve Smith out early and then to get him with a ball like that was was just a big moment in the game yeah it was a wonderful passage to play leading up to it he just built up nicely to what ended up being the the perfect delivery uh that caught the outside edge of Steve Smith spat your points a really valid one about Steve Smith he made a major technical change from his first Innings which was only one ball so it’s a small sample size but that one ball he made that big uh obvious adjustment step across his stumps and then was caught right in front by bura uh Smith changed that in the second Innings he wasn’t making a well minimal movement on the crease standing still and he started to look like he could get some Rhythm up uh even in challenging conditions with a few cracks on the pitch so you’re right um that’s that’s nipped in the bud Now by Muhammad SJ and how brilliant he was he looks having come back from dangi fever he looks strong he looks fit he looks energized and the fire in the eyes that’s it for me when I see him in broadcast and we go in tight with a tight shot of him it is the fire in the eyes for him and he doesn’t even need to say anything to the opponent but they know he is onto them he’s all over them and and of equal importance was a debutant hashid Rana he he’s a likely character I was very impressed with him at test match create level lead to some scrutiny of the Australian batting order I mean we were discussing in commentary today is there anyone who’s pushing alab buin is there anyone who’s sort of saying I should be in the team and not you you look down that list mwei will get another chance when you put a debut on and you give him a couple of test matches Usman kaj has 38 but he’s he’s he’s been one of the stand out openers in the last two or three years but do you see anyone there in domestic Cricket who’s pushing some of the players will there be a lot of scrutiny after this defeat or will people say look it’s just first test of five let’s take a look when we get to Melbourne lot a lot of scrutiny already has started there’ll be no changes uh I I don’t see any change to that batting l in fact to that team going into the pink ball test and unless there’s something un to between now and Adelaide uh they they’ve earned the right to have a little bit more of a run at it and as you say mcweeny will get another go uh no no one really in their right mind is going to pick someone give them one game and then take them out uh so I don’t expect any changes there’s a lot of soul searching there’s a lot of work to be done by a couple of players to just try and find some Rhythm find the middle of the bat and then when they get into the Test match find some time out there to get their confidence back um domestic Cricket Josh englas um he’s been up there alongside Alex care is the leading run scorer in In First Class Cricket he’s on standby um he’s the only one really there’s a guy by the name of Bo Webster out of Tasmania who’s made some runs a tall allrounder he may come into the equation some time down the track for Australia but uh there’s no one else piling on runs that has this top order under pressure so the credits they’ve earned you know the likes of laain kaaja and Smith um those credits along with the lack of pressure from beneath that’s what allow allows them to continue on so no changes for me laan’s recent scores 1122 10 16 623 seems a fidgety character don’t know he’s probably a warrior but he’s he’s he’s a fine player so he said he’s still got the credits he’ll get a couple more test matches is there a problem at the top I mean da dve Warner sitting with us yeah is there a sort of post Warner situation that there’s no one really ready to take over from one I know that Call’s not going to come he keeps talking about the call and keeping his phone line open I know that Call’s not going to come but is there is there an issue with finding a successor so that was a question from Karen mea or Australia suffering from PW wrtg you’ve come up with a new one post Warner retirement trauma is that an issue Gilly yeah I I saw that question I was trying to work out what that acronym was but now I get it uh no I I’ll say no because I I mean David is one of our most successful openers across all formats and a wonderful cricketer U but even by his lofty standards towards the end of his career he wasn’t exactly nailing you know the big scores and and he wasn’t the model of consistency that he had been throughout his career so his um you know his results were tailing away a little bit so that that’s um yeah I don’t think the Australian team were were banking on big runs at the top of the order it had been ongoing for a few seasons this sort of slight vulnerability at the top uh so but for a number of years a lot of people a lot of commentary was around that Australia were too reliant on Warner and Smith and if they didn’t get them not many other players were Lavan appeared and had a golden run but he’s really come off in recent time so um if you it’s tough India saw it’s tough to replace icons of the game so David Warner is um always going to be he’s a Hall of Fame cricketer but you know I don’t I don’t think that uh that that Australia are sitting around now now going we need him back it’s just a matter of trying to work out who can fill that void and build on a career Nathan mcweeny might get it right in his home conditions uh in Adelaide that’s the great Merit of having a five test series isn’t it that yeah it’s it’s it’s one Series teams have so often come back from a game down and and Australia is not the kind of team or with the Personalities in there toh to take a backward step always love looking at the positives we talked at length over the last three days about the positives in uh in this Indian team bura s aritana even ni RI who I thought was was very impressive the big 100 for verat kohi that would have lifted the dressing room Jess walz maturity k r doing so well at the top let’s look at what happened to Australia today and Gilly there is this one guy in the Australian team that India just look at him and say aren’t you tired of doing it against India and I thought his form today getting 89 was one of the pluses for Australia or good well for them going into adelade Travis head yeah now they very India know him well don’t they red or white B far too well yeah um and I think that that the strong point for me for Travis is he can intimidate an opposition and that then because of that positive mindset that he has and he strides out and he’s been quite outspoken about it uh throughout his return to test Cricket over the last couple of years he’s not going to die wondering he’s going to play his way and you know if it doesn’t work he’ll live with that and be at ease with himself so that then can just affect the way bowls bow to him and I thought India got lured into just feeling like okay he’s going to offer a chance here so they then over attack a little bit and end up bowling some that are a little bit wide and he D out on anything wide he hits beautiful cut shots and square drives uh they took him on with a bit of short pitch bowling Travis will always engage he’ll look to ramp he’ll play the hook shot but you can play into his favor if you try to attack him too much and he can start to get away on you but they always had you know hundreds and hundreds of runs up their sleeve but maybe that’s something for the rest of this series a long series as you say harsh that they need to be mindful of and the other positive I think too was Mitch Marsh I think he’ll take some confidence of just getting himself into a partnership into an Innings of some sort he’ll be most disappointed that it ended too quickly right so there you are that that much about this test match as we keep saying it’s only the first out of five so let’s let’s look a little ahead at the next one and go into our next segment which is uh being in the hot spot you referred to it briefly Gilly when you talked about the babasa series in 2021 the 36 allout it was actually 36 for9 because Mohamad sham got hit on the hand and went away India would have preferred it to be 36 all out 36 for9 meant that India lost shami for the rest of the season Series yeah from there scripted one of the most amazing turnarounds in modern test match cricket now Australia have four games in front of them do you see the characters in there do you see the skill in there do you see the Personalities in there to craft a similar turnaround I do I mean they’ve got a a successful history this group of players and they got a leader that seems to find success at will very easily but uh when he’s been challenged before he’s generally stood up up looked adversity in the eye and said no I I’ll back my team and I’ll back myself to come out of this so it’s just that little lack of confidence in that batting lineup in particular the bowling unit though I thought they did a pretty good job in that first Innings they’ll be better for the run of the second Innings orbe it was um all you know in a losing cause but this lack of cricket or lack of Red Bull Cricket leading into the test series that they’ve got plenty of overs under their belt now and their experience campaign is it shouldn’t take them long to be able to flick the switch and and get back into the Rhythm uh so it’s just that batting confidence or lack of that is the only issue but they go to a venue that they do know well and play well and the conditions of day night test create pink ball test create they should feel that those Creature Comforts around them that should uh appease those issues and and the worries and they should be able to climb their way back into it doesn’t guarantee success um because India will go there I love Jas wal’s comments he was asking our broadcast you know before coming to Australia of all the Test match venues was there one you were really Keen to do well on and he said yeah Perth I wanted to do well in Perth um having grown up and knowing about the wack I wanted to show that I could play in these conditions well he’s ticked that off look out it might be an Adela pink ball test that’s next next one on the list to try and cross off so uh yeah a lot to look forward to it’s going to be exciting y I mean per was a fortress played 414 Adela day night played 717 but in intriguingly as we look ahead to the second one even though India won this there’s likely to be more changes in the Indian team than in the uh in the Australian team rooh sharma’s here he’s already been having a net and as you know the more Nets you are the better you are so Rohit Sharma comes back into the side we don’t yet know about whether shouan Gil’s injury will heal but they believe it will if it does he comes back in as well sadly that’ll mean that pikal and jel miss out we don’t yet know what the timeline on on Mohammad shami coming in is but though at least those two and maybe a they they’ll think about Washington Sund whether he was he did everything that was asked of him I thought he batted all right bow okay in the second Innings but uh how how important is that second test then I mean in a five test series you got two down you’re in trouble if Australia win one1 wow it’s set up for the next three yeah that would that I mean from a series point of view that would be brilliant uh shman Gill walking across the Outfield I had a chat with him after the game when I was walking to ma he was out doing some Sprint work and a bit of exercises had a nice little chat with him and and he seemed quietly confident without confirming he’ll be playing but he’s um he’s quietly confident he’ll be available for selection so that’s nice and we saw rowt having a hit in the in the Nets having arrived yesterday uh yeah I think those changes will probably take place of those two players derell and pakal that you said go out maybe Ashman might come into the into contention yeah I think um I think his uh his bowling might just have a little bit more of a a threatening effect against the Australians but who knows we’ll wait and see spoiled for Choice uh India and on the other side I don’t think any changes to Australian team which is ironic isn’t it they were the ones that got beaten by 295 runs and I think you can confidently say that 11 or play again but whatever the case yeah it’ be good under watch we’ll wait and see I’ll just tell you one little thing before we go Gilly keeps talking about and and and I was there and I ran into Rohit and I was there and I ran into somebody no that’s not how it is Adam gilchris is standing in birth in the middle and people come over to say hello to Adam gilchris that that that’s actually what happens I I I don’t have much to do anymore before the start of a game so I sit there and I watch and I I see these things happening and it’s wonderful Gilly I’m I’m not just talking of it’s wonderful to have you on criek bus to give you to provide your wonderful insights as well and I look forward to working with you again look forward to a fantastic series thanks for joining us pleasure mate see you later [Music] [Applause] [Music]
