uniforms we love them we root for them we look good in them but what do we really know about uniforms how do we go from this to this did you know the first uniforms were technically socks maybe that’s why baseball has three teams named after hosy and did you ever wonder why baseball is the only major sport where the managers wear the laundry and whether you prefer long pants or shorts go classic or Back to the Future or simply watch to show off those guns Suns out guns out we got you so get ready for some dirt on the skirt this is inside [Music] Stitch welcome to inside Stitch baseball’s trendiest show I’m AJ Andrews and from the Hughes of Cincinnati to the purple palette of Colorado baseball uniforms can be as colorful as the rainbow shout out to the Houston Astros but it wasn’t always like that our resident uni expert Mike CLA has the genuine article white and gray for decades this is largely what baseball teams wore creating a universe dressed just like a dog’s vision an Endless Sea of monocrome and then the 1970s came yes that magical time in American history when color TVs began to outsell Black and White sets that meant it was time for baseball to do the same to say that teams never experimented with color before would be wrong the Giants once wore purple and the Dodgers even wore green heck the Cubs busted out sky blue uniforms in 1941 but really as with all things the start of baseball’s trippy time of kaleidoscopic colors is thanks to Charlie o yes the man who tried to turn baseballs yellow gave MC Hammer a job in the team’s front office and hired a mule as a mascot kickstarted the uniform revolution in 1963 Finley then the owner of the Kansas City swapped out their red and blue Unis for bright yellow and green ones Flash Forward July 16th 1970 the day the Pirates opened Three Rivers Stadium they also opened Pandora’s wardrobe as the Bucks changed into baseball’s first pullover Jersey and elastic waistband pants gone were fussy button-down shirts and in were the colorful pullovers Charlie Finley and the A’s took on deeper shades of green and gold and route to three consecutive World Series titles from 1972 to 74 the Cardinals adopted their Speedy quick powder blues and so did the Phillies before later moving on to all Maroon togs Andrew McCutchen certainly dug those the Braves got funky with their blue red and white uniforms with a modern and stylish feather on the sleeves sure enough that’s what Hank Aaron was wearing when he cracked number 715 there’s a new home run champion of all time and it’s Henry Aon tired of wearing a little bit of orange the Orioles broke out an all orange set of prison jumpsuits they threw these back on for one game in 2010 before then manager Buck Showalter promised they would never be worn again you won’t see them again I someone said we look like Halloween candy corn but I’ll take it you know the Padres befitting their Monkish name dressed themselves in deep Brown uniforms with touches of yellow or orange the Astros seemingly couldn’t decide on one color so went with a full rainbow of them known as the Tequila Sunrise uniforms to fans designer Jack Amon was told to be different when he created the look still for all the Glorious colors and combinations there was one team that outdid them all and it was the club that started the pullover Madness in 1977 the Pirates brought out a set of uniforms that could have been made for paper dolls there are so many combinations possible there were yellow pants black pants and pinstripe pants to go with yellow tops black tops and pinstripe tops they could all be mixed and matched into a never-ending variety and to literally top it all off the tore pillbox cap that could be bed decked with starel stars after players performed well in games these days teams are definitely not afraid of color most clubs other than the Yankees of course have at least one alternate jersey if not more they regularly wear throwback uniforms to this glorious ERA with the Advent of the city connect uniforms teams don’t even wear the colors they usually do as the Red Sox now wear Marathon yellow and baby blue and the Nationals Dawn gray and cherry blossom pink uniforms that we have these at all can be tied straight back to Charlie o and those wild double knits of the 1970s long may this color Revolution last no matter what colors you wear nothing Glitters quite like gold and whether you’re talking trophies cups plaques or belts it’s all about the hardware so how did baseball turn a wild piece of jewelry into one of the most coveted prizes in sports let’s find out Alonzo comes out of a timeout and walks it off what a finish Soo down on the knee he’s got it f as flip Sky High this will be our third year creating the Home Run dirty chains the concept came from this chain that was inspired by a music video from the early 2000s by uh by gunit and 50 Cent getting different um pieces of inspiration from all those Outlets as well as trying to gain inspiration from the city itself in Los Angeles there may be you know palm trees the skyline Walk of Fame you have the Stars it’s very flashy and cinematic movie like the Jeweler is Kenny Wang he does a lot of costume jewelry he does a lot of jewelry for different brands and I’m excited to uh to see his work this time I’m really good at hand making things um that’s kind of part of why I exist you know one of the main things that I was looking for was inspiration that can kind of resonate with some of the players knowing that our Superstars are Are Young and Hungry we wanted to have that that wow factor and you know have someone be able to pinpoint exactly where that moment in time was so you look at that chain you say that that exact chain was one in you know Los Angeles in 2022 at the Home Run Derby it was great to hear last year um Pete Alonzo actually he went on record you know after winning the second time he said you know how he loved the chains and he thinks they’re very cool each year and he’s building quite the collection of them I think more than anything was the weight of the chain like the last two chains like the second one that we did was 10 lb and then the first one was 5 lb and just the size of it I was like I was thrown Pete that night when he had won he wore it all night long I his neck had to be hurting you know this is kind of an important piece I mean you know there’s going to be millions of people that are looking forward to like what what we’re doing this year and that that’s it’s pretty exciting seeing Juan sto in his Nationals gear reminds us that the colors we bleed can always change still though sometimes seeing a player in another uniform can be downright bizarre Adan Berg gets dressed to the nine did you know that Yogi Bear’s famous saying it ain’t over till it’s over was said while he wore a Mets uniform who knew can you picture Joe deio in Oakland green and gold well you don’t have to there’s a picture of It kind of weird right have you come to terms with Juan sto in a Padre’s uni it took some getting used to well in this edition of dress the nines I’m looking at some players you should all know and love who wound up in some unfamiliar uniforms starting us off at number nine is an absolute No Doubt greatest of all time baseball Immortal Willie Mae he was a giant in New York and San Francisco from the ‘ 50s to the 70s then near the end of his playing career Maize was aent don’t get me wrong the say he kid looks great in blue and orange but it never quite looks right at number eight New Hall of Famer David Ortiz it wasn’t always Red Sox Legend David Ortiz early in his career Big Poppy was a twin he wasn’t even an Ortiz since he used the name David Aras when he was first called up Ortiz played a few seasons in the Twin Cities but check out this clip doing damage against Boston a Minnesota uniform strange and it is gone a grand slam Dwight good makes the list at number seven I’m sure we all remember him on the Mets and Yankees but do you remember that he was also an astro Dr K also saw a little action with Cleveland and Tampa Bay but those stops were not as brief as his four Innings with Houston in 2000 got him next in the list you loved him as a mariner and you loved him as a red but do you remember Ken griffy Jr as a white sock the fan that caught this ridiculous Moon shot probably does well that’s one I PE throwing that one back junior belted three of his 630 career homers while shooting up for Chicago in 2008 at number five Atlanta great Dale Murphy here in a pair of MVPs in 15 seasons in a Braves uniform I can accept him in a Phillies uniform in the early 90s but Murphy in the purple Rocky uniform in 1993 seems like we’ve stepped into an alternate timeline the other 1993 expansion team factors in at number four it’s my Piaza as a Marlin Piaza was more famously a Dodger and a Mets but for just five games in 1998 he was a fish Piaza in Marlin’s teal in his prime just looks strange at number three I’m putting Reggie Jackson in Orioles uniform Mr October was a Star in Oakland and a mega star in New York but in between in 1976 he was an O Reggie was even on the cover of Sports Illustrated Baltimore threads but I don’t know how many people would remember it on to number two William mccovy was a lifetime giant right they named a coob after the guy well maybe you forgot about his late career detour with the Padre’s in athletics uh the Padre’s I get there’s a similar color scheme happening there but mccovy on the other side of the bay in 1976 can’t be cool for Giants fans thankfully finished out his Hall of Fame career back in San Francisco and all was right with the world coming in at number one for me as a guy so wildly popular he had a Mania named in his honor Fernando Valenzuela was absolutely huge for baseball in the early 80s and Fernando Mania was kicked off by his insane 1981 season he began That season with eight straight complete games including five shutouts and wound up with the Rookie of the Year and the NL s awards for his efforts in the ’90s Valenzuela found himself pitching for the Orioles Phillies Padres and Cardinals Valenzuela was such an icon in Dodger blue that it’s the only way I could even picture it so what will this piece look like in 10 years will Otani be a pirate could Joy VTO up for the Blue Jays will Alber pools ever manage the Cubs it seems unlikely now but who knows while seeing homegrown Talent like say Aaron judge where another uniform might be upsetting the truth is only a fraction of MLB players have spent 10 or more years with a single franchise so it’s far more likely your favorite player will wear another teamers but How likely is it that fans would rock another club gear I went to the MLB store in New York City to find out all right here with this lovely gentleman can you please tell everyone your name I’m Sam I mean there’s a little bit of an accent it doesn’t sound like it’s from New York so where are you from LF cold Australia so I’m with probably the coolest person here in New York City Kinsley how old are you Kinsley so who is your favorite team Asos so I’m here with what I’m going to guess is a Mets fan I don’t know where I got that idea from but just a guess what is your name my name is Glen Glen and are you from here New York yes I live in que being from Australia you may not have a favorite baseball team or do you yeah actually on them on the uh Dodges the Yankees Mets all the way uh say the Baltimore Orioles New York Yankees all day would you ever put on another team’s Jersey no way no no chance would you wear another team Jersy you would easy uh yeah I’m kind of a bandwagon guy so I could wear different stuff I try not to wear you know teams in my division also you would you really wouldn’t see me in you know yane fear and what would it take to get you in something yane I take a lot honestly I love my Mets that much I do have a price what is the price few hundred I might I would consider I mean it depends it depends if it was cool if it was older then yeah I guess but probably not if it was really really cool as long as it’s not the Yankees or the Braves I would consider it this is for you thank you you’re so welcome it matches your outfit oh another shrimp on the Bobby yeah I call them FRS okay so never Yankees never anything in your domestic Vision but we’re going to go on a little bit of a shopping spree I want to see what I can put together and if you’d be cool with it and hopefully your nightmare doesn’t come true but if it does it’ll be in style okay I can promise you that all right you ready I trust [Music] you Glenn we are about to play a fun game I like to call this or that where you’re going to be blindfolded cuz I have these options of story I’m going to pick out one or put two up you’re going to pick which one and that’s how you’re going to put your outfit together do you feel lucky I feel lucky we’re about to see okay let’s do right let’s do [Music] it good choice let’s do right again and just for fun because I just feel like this is your swag just say um we wee even better one more you have to do your shoes your outfit is not complete without nice shoes let’s go with the left finish it off with the left [Music] okay 3 2 1 T okay all right my fits out of sight because you were such a great sport I’m going to give you this beautiful Mets chain to Crown you the best dressed in New York City you lowy look like you feeling yourself right now I I am honestly I really am I think the shorts are like an awesome touch to this whole thing overall fire can we take some pictures definitely just for you to remember this and for me to use as collateral if I ever need to get you back for something awesome [Music] [Applause] e baseball sure does look good on you make sure to try out the QR code on your screen to check out my curated MLB style section the MLB flagship store reps all 30 MLB teams which is almost twice as many as Edwin Jackson played for in his 16-year career Jackson set a record suiting up for 14 different franchises when it comes to wearing uniforms he is the standard and he’s how we measure style in the laundry list I’m Carlos SP and throughout my career I played for eight different ball clubs and today we’re going to be taking a look at some of my uniforms all right and I’m going to rate them one to 14 Edwin Jackson all right so here we go let’s do it I’m I’m going to give that for Edwin Jackson I didn’t particularly like I mean they were nice but they didn’t excite me that much yeah this was pretty cool right the Athletics um the gold the green I’m going to go with seven Edwin Jacksons oh yeah that was a good one I love this yeah the the Futures game yeah this one was absolutely awesome with the teal and all that that was in Seattle I’m going to give that nine Edwin Jacksons I’m reserving the big numbers for later detroy Tigers I’m going to I’m going to I’m going to go I’m going to go six edin Jackson this really it’s too traditional for me the the Detroit Tigers grew up there the Red Sox uniforms for me mean a lot so I’m going 11 Edwin Jackson the socks yes of course I played with edin Jackson I mean he was my teammate over there uh in Tampa Bay and I had the best year of my career so I should rate this 14 Edwin Jackson based on the year that I had this is the allstar game I love this uniform of course this is this is 14 Edwin Jackson this was a sharp uniform really ah the Cubbies the Cubbies would be right out there as well I wouldn’t go to 14 Edwin Jackson I would say maybe 11 Edwin Jacksons so much history there and to be able to wear this uniform I mean I really worry with a lot of Pride oh okay all right so I did have I didn’t have that great of a year here with the Astros but the uniform was awesome it was absolutely sick so I would say I’m giving this 12 Edom Jackson based on looks and as my son would say yeah I had a lot of drip the Royals all right I didn’t like this uniform that much I’m going to go two Edwin Jacksons for this uniform right here plus I only got like three at bats you know in the big leagues towards the end of my career with the Royals however I have to say they treated me so well o you brought me back lay yeah L compon baby that’s uh that this one means a lot to me um I actually met my wife while I was playing over there in winterball and now we have three beautiful kids talking about something that means a lot to me this is a 14 Edwin Jackson based on looks cuz I thought they looked sharp and based on what the uniform means to me personally huge don’t I have more uniforms to look at no really that’s it thought they were more that Carlos P has got some style and while we generally don’t think of dads as stylish when it comes to the big league Papas you have to acknowledge the drip some might even say the dads wore it best we go off Bas to get the tail of the tape time now for taale of the tape tap presented by inside Stitch LG red here Xavier Scruggs Keith mcferson here with you okay today we’re talking about some alltime fatherson Duos first up gentleman Vladimir Guerrero versus Vlad Jr okay so that vintage expose uni versus you know the clean Blue Jays fit so X who wore it best oh man I I got to say I love vlat Jr vlat Jr I think he looks good slim fitting down now starting to get in better shape I love what you know he adds to it too like all the little accessories with the arm pad the leg I just love the way this guy looks in a jersey I’m going to go with his pops though I don’t know I don’t hate I don’t hate on his swag he’s got the dreads like you said he’s got you know all the other stuff but his dad team no gloves he was like the leader of team no gloves the the slimfit uni he was slim fit himself uh I I got to go with with Vlad senior okay so we can agree to disagree personally I think they both look great because I’m not going to pick aide here next up Dante bashet of the Blake Street bombers I’m from Colorado so I’m partial to this one against another baby J his son Bo bashet Keith we’re going to start with you who wore it best oh this is easy the young man is swagged up Bo Bo knows Bo’s got the flow B’s usually got a bandana some shades the gloves the armband he is one of the swaggiest baseball players that exist right now so of course young man wor better yeah but his pops did it first man Dante bashet he had the pipes like he had such huge arms like I look at the way he was able to hit homers like all the time he passed that all down to B the swag came from him first and I love what he was able to do in Colorado especially I mean I got to go with Dante I grew up on a steady diet of the Blake Street bomber so I have to go on that side with the purple mountains there my friend but yeah baby bow there on the purple carpet in Denver allstar game swaggy as it gets okay last but certainly not least the kid Ken Griffey Jr against his dad Ken Griffey Senior so this father son do actually got to play together for that season in Seattle so X who wore it best the kid is the swaggiest play we probably ever had in the game ever so I I mean I just think of that smooth swing from the left side that I was always used to watching and trying to emulate even from the right side yes his pops did it first but look how smooth that is right there I mean I mean the way he wore the Hat backward he originated the backward wearing hat during batting practice everybody wanted to be junior yeah I’m not going to disagree I mean the kid 24 he made that 24 iconic he’s got his own shoes with the 24 that everybody wants uniwise man no one wore it better than him he was the guy like you said the backwards cap he was the guy bringing style and swag the baseball people are still trying to look like Ken griffy yeah they really are I wanted to be himci like griffy commercials like isn’t it his s that’s the the logo yes the logo the griffy yes so there you go and griffy we rest our case all right that wraps up another edition of tale of the tape for off base crew I’m Lauren Gardner see you next time thanks for watching inside Stitch I’m AJ Andrews but before we close up shop here’s one last thread try this the Milwaukee Brewers are playing the Kansas City Royals while the Royals were having a few problems holding on to the ball they also had other problems what’s wrong with this picture look closer a Kansas City player is in a Brewer’s uniform what caused this Royal mixup it seems someone broke into the KC locker room and stole most of their uniforms [Music] here’s a Milwaukee Brewer hitting the ball and a Milwaukee Brewer catching the ball well it’s tough enough to lose your uniform but it’s even tougher to lose the game how about that [Music]
