for us.com I’m Jack Smith alongside Conor moris set for instant analysis from USC’s 19-13 win over UCLA here in the Rose bow Trojans win the Rivalry avenge their loss from last year but it was far from a perfect game for USC Trojans scor just one offensive touchdown one touchdown all day but it’s the one that counts at the end and Trojans are able to get the Rivalry win here across town they won the fourth quarter 10- nothing which was certainly a step in the right direction no turnovers on the night mava jadeen Maya did have the fumble in the game but I believe Walker Lions fell on it so UFC didn’t turn the ball over and they won the fourth quarter which was good but my initial thoughts after this game Jack like how are we going to grade USC after this win are we going to grade them on the 2024 USC scale because if we are then they did pretty well they beat a team on the road even though it’s still in La for the first time this season and they become Bowl eligible they they closed out well but like in the grand scheme of the USC program history like that UCLA team is really bad USC won by six points they only scored the one offensive touchdown defensively they did some nice things but like I don’t know how you could possibly walk away feeling satisfied other than the fact that USC beat its rival 19-13 that really wasn’t a well-played game USC had three opportunities inside UCLA’s 5 yard line to score a touchdown and they kicked three field goals on all three opportunities so for this season it’s a nice win but in the grand scheme of things I don’t really see the progress that I I think fans would expect this late in Lincoln Riley’s third season wins a win though and it’s nice to get one against your rival yeah I think the way I would put it is USC played better than UCLA today but both teams played really poorly they made a lot of mistakes there was chippiness on both sides both sides were undisciplined at times both sides didn’t take advantage of the other team’s mistakes USC’s field position was about as good as you could ask for and the Trojans put up a season low 19 points a season after they put up a season low 20 points against the same UCLA Bunch they hire the UCLA defensive coordinator because of that and a year later that they can’t even match that number against the Bruins it was a far different game in terms of the game script but how many times did USC start in UCLA territory or you know at the 45 yd line or better on their own side I believe it was five of the nine times they got the football outside of the ne downs and they only scored one offensive touchdown and they only scored 19 points you feel like if you give Lincoln Riley’s off defense uh especially with the playmakers that this one has the ball at at that point they’re bound to score more points I thought this was for USC’s offense probably the worst game of the year we need to change the narrative about USC’s offense the the days of Kayla Williams are clearly gone but like it’s different this year and coming into the UCLA game it wasn’t the elite elite offense that we’re used to but it was still pretty good and tonight it just did not look very good they did make enough plays to win as you talked about but the field position UCLA was given USC the the game between kicking off from their freaking 5 yard line to start the second half and the late hit penalty on Makai lemon how many penalties and just mistakes and just bad plays that UCLA make which gave USC what you thought would be an advantage USC probably should have run away with this game and they weren’t we do need to mention the flu that really affected USC this week Lincoln Riley said after the game that 27 players miss practice on Tuesday now I don’t exactly know what that means cuz Chris and I waited the tunnel before every practice and they were definitely more than that amount of guys who walked out so maybe some guys just came out and watched on the sideline we don’t know we can’t watch but uh he did say they had 27 guys out and clearly it bothered him afterwards Jaden maava was still coughing Lincoln Ry had the flu this week East mascarenas Arnold was coughing these guys were really affected by it so we we need to have this conversation with that in mind too that they did win the game despite uh this illness going through the locker room but yeah just a a really poor performance and your point Jack about the starting field position if you told me USC would have all these drives starting where they started and they only scored 19 points I’d be like even though they’ve had problems this year that’s probably not right they will probably score more than that they just didn’t so they they certainly still have some stuff to work out and you have a really good Notre Dame team coming into the Coliseum next week they’re not going to give you nearly as many opportunities as UCLA did that game will tell me a lot more yeah I understand that the team had the flu but how many mistakes that USC made today would you say were flu related it’s not that the Trojans looked gassed or that they looked tired or that they just looked out of sorts it’s that the decision- making was off at times when USC would get inside the 5 yard line it would be maybe a run on first down and then Fades every single time which you don’t see a lot in a Lincoln riy offense we haven’t seen much this year so I don’t know if it was they had they weren’t able to install the Red Zone packages that they wanted to this week so they had to resort to throwing one-on-one balls but it didn’t seem to me that the Red Zone know troubles were were spawned by the fact that USC was tired or gassed or out of sorts because of the flu it just seemed like them reverting to a different version of themselves that we haven’t seen all year for almost no good reason I don’t know if they thought that they had an advantage going uh to the fade balls against UCLA specifically but it didn’t feel like to me the USC mistakes you look back on you say it’s just cuz they’re tired you know they’ve had the flu all week I agree with you and looking back in this game like what’s the big play we’ll all remember McKai lemon throwing the 39 yard pass to Kiren Hudson you needed that to beat a UCLA team that is having some issues this season so that to me sort of speaks volume like nice play but you needed that to beat this team that stood out to me and then they do eventually score Jaden Maya we we saw some of his magic on that touchdown right after the completion but without that play from lemon where he throws a beautiful ball one of the best passes of the night and it was from a wide receiver like USC probably doesn’t score so so that stands out to me and yeah I agree with you like did they look really tired was it like UCLA was was able to get their run game going and and U USC just looked gassed defensively no it was just execution especially on the offensive side side so I agree with you on that I think this is maybe the the biggest game that has signaled why USC brought over Danton Lynn and the effect that that is had on USC this season he talked earlier this week about the commitment to defense and Lincoln Riley back what he said when they hired D Lynn that they were committed to playing solid defense and Elite defense at USC this was the best performance from the defense I think all season 13 points allowed to this UCLA group and they were really stingy at the end of the game on defense and while there were times that UCLA would get a big play the only touchdown drive for the Bruins came when they started at the 45 so if you put UCLA in regular field position they just weren’t scoring against this USC defense tonight Ben but don’t break this unit’s done so well with that this year J Michael St Devon had a couple of big completions but nothing that you look back on it’s like oh that’s the play that killed USC the the defense was was really really strong in this one the the fourth and one stuff of garbers at the end that just about clinched the Victory and then they you got the ball back and they had one more chance and then they didn’t get a yard I don’t think so I guess that was really what clinched the win but the the previous turnover on Downs really helped so getting two of those in the fourth quarter was great and jacobe Covington was beat a couple times in coverage but outside of that I I don’t look and remember any big mistakes like yes UCLA had a couple of big runs but it’s all about points scored and last season UCLA scored a hell of a lot more points I forget what the final was but they got 3820 I think they they got a lot more than they got tonight so that’s a step in the right direction it’s it’s not perfect from the USC defense but it’s really really good really really improved from last season and that’s probably one of the most frustrating parts of this whole year Jack if you told us before the year this defense is going to be ranked where they are in points per game and only allow 13 to UCLA we probably would have expected more wins it’s that that’s the big story today in all season I mean there’s been a quarterback change like the offense just is not what we’ve expected from Lincoln Riley and they scored 19 points like you said they probably look the worst that they have all season it’s it’s a shame because defensively us he’s they’re rolling right now and I think for the USC defense the pass rush was much improved today there were times they got out of their Rush lanes and allowed Ethan garbers to scramble but for the most part there was a lot more pressure they converted those pressures into sacks at a higher rate it feels like than they have for the most part this season and we see Danton Lyn’s best performances as a defensive coordinator start up front with pressure with pass rush with getting to the quarterback it’s what played Caleb Williams in USC last season and for the first time this year I I remember USC getting consistent pressure from the defensive line totally agree with you on that point I mean I got to say though like UCL had their fourth ring left tackle this is a putrid offense a lot of the time and Nebraska is a petri offense so credit for for you for like doing what you’re supposed to do and and executing really well they they deserve a lot of credit it it’s much improved from from where it was last year but I I don’t want to get too carried away and you know say the pass rush is fixed like the pass rush numbers this season even with tonight doing a lot better than they have been like it’s still not a a great output so step in the right direction for sure um I don’t know I’m not too like overly impressed with with the pass rush guys got better but like that’s a really really bad offensive line for UCLA so tough to give them the the full marks but hey you play against who you play against and tonight they certainly W up front and they they had a really nice performance defensively so they do deserve credit at six and six though you I think overall we just expect a little bit more from from all sides of the ball and we’ll see what happens going forward when you see uh USC excuse me get some guys healthier and maybe get some guys from the transfer portal I I do think this pass rush could be good next season for right now Danton Lyn’s making the most with what he has and tonight it worked yeah and and for USC obviously the win to get Bowl eligible the win over a rival Lincoln Riley mentioned they did the little things they needed to do to win a rivalry game I don’t think they did anything more than that they did what they needed to do to beat Nebraska last week I don’t think they did any more than that and at this point in the Lincoln Riley tenure you’re three seasons in you know now you’re bow eligible this year but I think fans expected more we expected more and obviously they got the win today and maybe the flu made it tougher to do the dominant things but this is far from a dominant football team and I think if they play like they did today it will not be a fun sight in the Coliseum next week against Notre Dame I agree and it just comes back to what we talked about at the beginning like for this year’s team this is a nice result getting a win getting a road win winning the fourth quarter but like big picture it’s hard to really feel good about the direction of the program and and good about where things are headed just because like it’s a it’s another ugly game and against Nebraska I I felt like USC probably played better than they did tonight but it wasn’t that step forward that I was hoping for and tonight they win and it’s by a bigger is it by a bigger margin do they win by six so not by a bigger margin but like they UCLA is better than Nebraska I think it’s safe to say that you say beat him on the road so like you take a step forward in that regard but I don’t feel like that momentum that I wanted to see is really there so nice to get Bowl eligible nice to get to six wins if they beat Notre Dame that would tell me a lot that team is rolling right now that something you could sink your teeth into that’s tangible evidence hey we’re going in the right direction USC is just better than Nebraska and UCLA and we saw that play out the last two weeks yeah and USC fans will take a win over UCLA whenever they can get him it’s funny that they come on the road they do get their first road win they avoid the the embarrassment of what would have been you know since 1950 they’ve never had a winless season full season on the road so they are able to get their first win first Big 10 Road win the road team actually has won five straight in this series so you’ll always celebrate a win over UCLA but I agree it doesn’t have either of us feeling much better about the path that this team is taking this season at least they’ve earned themselves another game in a bowl but for the way that the program’s moving it’s not where you would want to be in year three I think we do owe one more uh shout out to the Specialists Eddie jitz had another phenomenal game three punts all of them down I believe inside the 10 including one of them down to the one that might have been his best work of the season and then Michael Lance came in he didn’t have to kick from very far but he did his job and the Trojans relied on him he he he accounted for nine of USC’s 16 points they were awesome tonight and field goals they were no guarantees coming into this game so credit to the USC Specialists for making those and Eddie chip plitki just continues to have a dominant season as dominant as you can have for a punter so that’s certainly a good story here and it’s good that USC gets Bowl eligible this group could use all the practices that they can get so they’ll get some more practices into the month of December whenever they play their bowl that will just be good remember last year the the Holiday Bowl USC really needed all those practices and and they looked really good in the the bowl game I think for all the young players that they have on this team those practices will be very beneficial and to what you said about the Specialists yeah they were awesome tonight and it’s a it’s a nice nice group especially chipit he should probably win that Ray guy word it’s not that I’m following punters too closely but I mean his run of Downing punts inside the 20 yard line I mean inside the 10 tonight he was exceptional and still doesn’t have a Touchback on the season it’s been remarkable I think I said nine of 12 for Michael Lite really was 12 of 19 he was phenomenal as USC only scored the one touchdown but that’s all we’ve got for you guys today from the rose bow a good win for USC but not one that makes you feel better about the way that the program is moving going forward but you get the win against UCA Avenge the loss from last year and the Victory Bell gets painted in Cardinal whichever USC fan would like to hear but for Conor moriset I’m Jack Smith thanks for watching instant analysis tonight from the Rose Bowl one more regular season game coming up next week we hope you tune in on USC foot.com
