for USC foot.com I’m Conor moriset alongside Chris trino we’re here for the last practice that we’re going to cover here of the regular season Chris for football USC of course plays arch rival Notre Dame on Saturday at 12:30 we heard from Danton Lynn today we heard from some defensive players today with Lynn Chris he’s ready for that Notre day Run game that was uh what dominated the conversation today he had high praise for Riley Leonard the quarterback who’s rushed for 13 touchdowns he also talked about the two good Notre Dame running backs jeremi love and jadarian price so it was good to hear from coach Lind today what stood out to you about that conversation honestly I felt like he was kind of excited about that opportunity obviously the Notre Dame Run game is going to be the key they’re one of 20 teams in the country that are averaging over 200 yards per game their last four games they have rushed for 200 plus yards so if USC can find a way to slow that down and make them off their game then USC will have a chance in the Coliseum so he kind of had this like look in his eye I felt like he was excited about the opportunity that his defense and the Run team has he just says they have to be consistent that is the key for them in defending this running attack Riley Leonard said he’s very fast and you know in terms of quarterbacks they faced this year they haven’t faced a ton of running quarterbacks they faced some mobile quarterbacks but in terms of design runs Ry Leonard is up there in terms of guys that they played this year and you know he fre out said this is going to be one of the best offenses we’ve seen this season Danton Lynn a finalist for the Royals award which goes out to the top assistant coach in college football he was congratulated about that and he was asked the significance and he took the high road Chris and said it’s all about the staff and the players but hey he was a finalist last year at UCLA too when you’re a finalist two different places two years in a row with different players different coaches the common Den denominator is Danton Lynn so I wish I could have asked to follow up and been like well hey look you did this last year too this is about you he took the high road though as we expected he also fielded a couple of recruiting questions but really the biggest thing for him was all about Notre Dame on the recruiting friend he just talked about how the disposition of players and their mindset is just as important as their skill set which sounds good but they’re not going after guys who aren’t built like USC recruits who have good mindsets only we all know that you got to have uh that physical build and the will to play football too let’s go to some of the players unless Chris you want to talk more about Lynn but you heard from greedy Vance a couple other guys what stood out to you about the players I did want to know one thing about uh coach Lynn this is obviously his first game in the Rivalry how Dame so he was excited about that and he’s been pretty good in rivalry games he’s 2 and0 in the cross town battle with USC UCLA being on both sides of it so maybe he’s a good luck charm when it comes to rivalry games I got to speak with Jaylen Smith and dlin talked about you know when he decided to make Jaylen Smith a cornerback he was like I think it was my my second day here I was like the way this guy is moving he’s so athletic I think he can work really well at the cornerback position it looks like they wanted to juice up that position so moved him over they have a pretty deep safety room as we know so Jaylen Smith has obviously worked out very very well this will be his last game in the Coliseum as a senior and you know he just spoke about how happen so fast like he remembers moving in as a freshman with Miller Moss you know one of his best friends in life and not just from high school B from alaman but he just talked about how it just flashed right on by and he’s going to be there it’s going to be emotional and he’s hoping he can go out with the win and he’s excited he gets to go out in a game against the top five Notre Dame team chance to no one is saying play spoiler but you know be The Underdogs and pull off an upset they definitely have a chance to play spoiler if they beat Notre Dame I could see a world where Notre Dame doesn’t make the college football playoff field so you talked about jayen Smith going out with a bang he accepted the invitation into the REI Senior Bowl I’m sure he wasn’t asked about potentially playing in a bowl but did you get the gist or the sense that this was his final game at USC didn’t get the gist and or final game that this was his final final game definitely just his final home game obviously but he was very honored about you know playing that Reese’s Senior Bowl and we’ll have to follow up with him after the bowl game to see because a lot of times what they say going to the final game is very different from what they say after the game so I would lean towards Jaylen Smith being a guy who would play in the B game you know he’s not you know first round second round pick can obviously help his his stock a lot with whatever he does in that uh that bowl game so I would I would leave towards him playing I heard from San green who Danton Lyn said is so versatile and I remember way back when we talked to Lynn first we said what helps guys get on the field and he said versatility so we saw Green in the UCLA game on the fourth and 10 last play of the game pretty much before USC took some knees he’s spying quarterback Ethan garbers and makes a great read on the play I don’t I know how many other defensive ends have that kind of ability where Lynn is good with them dropping back and being able to spy the quarterback a lot of guys they just try to get up the field and sack the quarterback it seems like green is understanding the defense and he’s just getting better and better week in and week out so he was really excited just to be playing because he talked about how at the beginning of the year it was frustrating and he he’s happy to be out there that’s just the sense I get talking to him he is so happy to be playing he’s been great against the Run Chris he’s been good uh getting quarterback pressures he tied Cameron fountain for four quarterback pressures against UCLA which led the team I really am looking forward if everyone comes back Lynn and the coaches what next year looks like for Sam green another year in this system he’s a little bit undersized height-wise but his motor is great and I think he’s gained the trust of the coaching staff when Anthony Lucas comes back next season I can see a world where Sam green is still playing a decent amount maybe not starting but I think he locked down a rotation piece in the future and he’s in my opinion sort of the exact guy you want rotating in and someone who understands the defense has that motor and he’s produced this year which has been encouraging and he’s fast I think that’s the big thing about him is get off is so good and he’s got such a good motor attack uh bigger offensive tackles and he was a big question mark for us going into this season with his new defensive shift bigger faster stronger all that kind of things and he’s not bigger he’s not stronger you know he’s he’s a strong kid but he’s not as strong as you know Anthony Lucas or what have you so does his body type work for this defense it worked for the last defensive coordinator Alex Ranch is a speedier smaller guy but he’s been making it work and you know I think he’s had a really strong close of the Season I’m excited to see what he does next year with this with this unit another year with uh of coaching and with Coach Henny and what you failed to mention is that he also got a great hit on Ethan garbage there at the end play kind of smacked him around there at the end so yeah he’s all over the place and he’s athletic enough to do a bunch of different things that a normal defensive end cannot do the other player I talked to today was Eddie chicki who was a finalist named a finalist for the ray guy award this week said it meant the world to him I don’t believe he has a Touchback this year right he does not I asked him and I hope people who watch this video don’t think it like I I meant any ill intent behind it but I was like how much of that is luck and how much of that is you trying to spin the ball away from the goal line and he said it was a mix of both soz I imagine even the best punters like it’s rare to go without a Touchback for the whole season that just goes to show how great of a year he’s having but he also brought up how guys like Makai lemon have done a great job of covering his punts and when maybe they haven’t had that backspin and they’ve been rolling forward the guys on the punt coverage team are so quick down the field that they been able to to help with that so he’s a very humble guy and he he didn’t take full credit for having the the lack of touchbacks this season it’s a team effort and I’m excited to see what he can do in the NFL because I think he’s pretty much stamped his uh his future this season he’s going to go to the next level as a former puncher myself I can say there is a degree of luck to it but yeah he is just doing an incredible job of making it in his favor that he’s not going to get the Touchback and to go the entire season you know not onone whatever you know that’s what he’s kind of aing for to have a to have that so yeah he’s been outstanding and he’s right his cover team has been great Hank pepper maai lemon those Gunners have been really great in getting down the field and you know pinning teams back he’s been a true Force this season and you know his numbers stacked up against the other two guys from Georgia and Florida State he’s slightly better obviously knock is that he hasn’t punted a lot this season you know Florida his fault not his fault but he’s doing what he’s supposed to do when he when he gets when his number is called so I think Eddie chit’s in a really good spot going to this final game for uh you know to bring home some potential major college football hard way I forgot to mention Hank pepper he has done a great job in coverage as well so Chris you were at the tunnel and then you also heard from greedy Vance any injury tunnel thoughts any greedy Vance thoughts to take us home before we finish this this episode of in an analysis with some Notre Dame talk no I mean it was a very it’s a ghost town around here as you can see no one has passed us and we’ve been would normally not be a good spot this would normally not be a good spot but very ghost town at the tunnel and but everyone still had a good upbeat mve you know thanksgiving’s tomorrow A lot of people are excited about that but I mentioned on Tuesday everyone just seemed to be in this joyous mood coming up at UCLA win and I felt it again here today so this team feels good they’re loose you know I think from an injury standpoint Jonah MIM Elijah AG they were both dressed out again they had some they got banged up there at the end of the uh UCLA game walking off a little a little gimpy with a little bit of a hitch but Jonah Manheim looked better today and they were both suited up so that’s a good sign for USC’s offensive line totally agree with you there as for this notary Dame game itself I listened to your podcast with shakan a little bit I feel like we all feel the same way it’s going to be a big tough game for USC of course Notre Dame I think is the best team that USC’s faced All Season even though their schedule leaves a lot to be desired they’re just getting better so they got to stop the run USC does to beat Notre Dame avoid turnovers Notre Dame has the country’s lead in most turnovers Force this season so it’s certainly not going to be easy I give USC a chance of course but on the show with Ryan I picked USC to lose 277 I feel like you’re going to make a similar prediction Chris what are your thoughts you want a prediction like you want I haven’t done one of these all year you can do whatever you want it’s the last show of the year I’m not going to break my streak I’m not going to give prediction but I do think this is a tough tough matchup as you pointed out it’s not great on paper for USC but hey USC they don’t have the pressure of needing to win here to get some Bowl eligibility Notre Dame hasn’t played a true Road game in like a long time USC plays really good at home they play Above you know what we’ve seen them on the road so that is in favor of USC so rivalry game you know they feel good feel good play good so I’m will to bet it’s a little bit closer than you know I feel like I was thinking early in the week so I still think Notre Dame slightly but I think anything can happen in this one he’s Chris trino I’m Conor moriset we’ll see you at the Coliseum for Saturday’s big rivalry game between Notre Dame and USC the home team should be really excited Chris I I can’t wait for this one this is always it’s always fun to me when USC goes up against a solid opponent it’s fun to to see where USC Stacks up so I’m looking forward to that and we’ll see you Saturday at the Coliseum Happy Thanksgiving
