Penn State Football was up by one point with less than five minutes left in the game and facing fourth down. Penn State head coach James Franklin ran his punt team on the field and then made a game-defining, potentially season-defining call. He green-lighted a fake punt call. The result was a 35-yard run by freshman Luke Reynolds and a 26-25 win.

Penn State reporter Greg Pickel discusses the decision and the game overall in this week’s Instant Analysis recap. Check out the complete video on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel or embedded here in this article.

Franklin breaks down the play after the game

After the game, head coach James Franklin discussed how that fake punt worked.

“Don Rulli deserves a ton of credit. He’s a guy that doesn’t get talked about a whole lot, but is loved and respected in our locker room,” Franklin said. “He’s the quarterback of that play. We’ve been working on it since training camp. We’ve called it in other games this year, but unless you have the right look, you can’t run it.”

Franklin wanted his offense to win the game. He discussed the reasoning behind why he wanted this offense to stay on the field instead of punting and trusting his defense to get them the ball back one final time.

“You know, I just felt like we needed to try to end the game on our terms with the ball in our hand. Give them a ton of credit. They did a good job of producing yards,” Franklin said.

What’s next for Penn State

Pickel discusses the rest of the game, which was heavily influenced by special teams. Penn State is now 10-1 and has a chance for an 11-1 victory with Maryland at home to close out the regular season next weekend.

Blue White Illustrated will have a full week of coverage between then and now! Our exclusive premium podcast, The Lions Den, airs on Monday of this week. Penn State 26 Minnesota 25 I’m Greg pickle from bluewhiteillustrated.com at Huntington Bank Stadium Penn State wins a wild wacky Affair here in Minneapolis to keep its college football playoff hopes alive look I think there’s plenty of people who think Penn State at 10 and two if it had lost tonight would be a college football playoff team I’m not one of them I think that obviously you look around the country Indiana loss today they’re going to be in that one loss conversation now along with many other teams you have some two loss teams that will be in conversation about making the 12 team field so Penn State knew what had it had in front of it here tonight if it wins out it gets in as simple as that if it loses it puts itself on very very shaky ground but that’s not something pen state has to worry about the nney Lions ended this game on their terms the final five minutes was pretty much pitcher perfect in terms of how you close out a football game James Franklin speaking moments ago here at Huntington Bank field saying that the fake punt call Dominic Ry to Center on the punt team pen state of course got went forward on fourth and one in its own territory uh with about four minutes to go Luke Reynolds rips off a 32 yard run into Minnesota territory uh Penn State had called that play six times previously this year James Franklin said following the game every time before they had checked out of it James Franklin saying it’s his call to put that call in action and then it’s Dominic ry’s call to either go with it or check into a regular punt Penn State got to look at won it and obviously it worked to Perfection as Luke Reynolds ripped off a big run to put Penn State in Minnesota field uh inside Minnesota’s uh 40 yard yard line and then from there Penn State was able to get it down to the Minnesota 8 or I’m sorry the 11 where ultimately on fourth and one Drew Aller hit Tyler Warren who fell over to three and closed the game out for the NY Lions a 26-25 victory so certainly wasn’t clean Penn State did have two turnovers but as James Franklin noted the two blocked uh one extra point and one punt basically wiped those out Minnesota scored a touchdown One play after the block punt pen state had three blockers for three rushers didn’t do a good enough job I think it may have been Reynolds who was at fault there or at least that was the understanding we got after the game if we’ll have to go back and watch it and see either way it was a failed effort all around and Minnesota scored a play later that was in the first half and then of course right at the end of the second quarter Penn State had itself in a position to tie the game with an extra point and instead that kick was blocked and taken uh it was taken back uh for two points all the way to the other end zone so not exactly the way Penn State threw it up without question uh and in that situation they were supposed to block down like they do on every other field goal as James Franklin that was not the right time to go away from something they’ve done every single game so far this year on the extra points and uh you know it didn’t cost them they they come away with a one-point win gave Minnesota basically nine on special teams and sometimes You’ rather be lucky than good I think that was probably pench State tonight it struggled to get the Run game going the defense did answer the bell for the most part uh obviously no new updates on Anthony dco just yet he left on the second play of the game needed crutches rather to get to a cart to get to the locker room early in the first quarter he was back on the sideline in Street closing crutches for the remainder of this game alono Ford the defensive tackle also was hurt uh he went to the sideline injury tent uh went in at halftime did come back out but was in Street Clos so we’ll learn more about those two guys hopefully on Monday uh Tyrese Mills exited this game with an injury as well so Penn State is definitely bruised definitely beat up as it heads home for its regular season finale against Maryland it will be senior day next Saturday 3:30 p.m. on Big 10 Network but it survived an advanced time of the year Penn State was able to do that here again it was not pretty we read all of your comments over at the blue white illustrate. comom lion dead Message Board we know you’re frustrated you have lots of things to say so do we make sure you check out Thomas Frank Carr and Sean Fitz here on the BWI YouTube channel or your favorite podcast feed for their postgame show and reactions as well but for Penn State a win’s a win as James Franklin likes to always say it’s cliche but there’s a lot of teams today who would like to be uh 10 in one pen State the third program only the third program with 10 wins in three straight years uh that would like to be uh vict notorious today and we’re not so Penn State finds a way to win on the road will it stay at number four will it drop in college football playoff rankings on Tuesday we’ll have to wait and see was not a pretty win it was about as ugly as they get but for Penn State it was a victory and it does keep its path to the college football playoff and potentially a first round home game alive I’m Greg pickle from blue white Illustrated we’ll talk to you next week from State College
