Penn State falls short in Title Game
The Penn State Nittany Lions needed to play a clean game to beat Oregon, and unfortunately for them, they didn’t. The Lions tossed two interceptions and allowed 181 yards to Ducks wide receiver Tez Johnson in the 45-37 loss on Saturday night.
The crew discusses if there are such things as moral victories for a team that has played teams closely for years but finds a way to come up short each time. They also get into the key moments and players from Saturday, including Drew Allar, Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen’s reemergence, and more.
Next up for the Nittany Lions
Fitz Bauer and Pickel recapped Penn State head coach James Franklin’s postgame comments, but be sure to hear it for yourself. We’ve got Franklin’s full remarks after the game on the BWI YouTube Channel. You can also watch the Labatt Postgame Show replay on the channel, here on the site, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Oregon 45 Penn State 37 in the Big 10 title game that’s johnan Fitz Nate Bower I’m Greg pickle from blue white Illustrated at Lucas Oil Stadium Field whatever it might be stadium in Indianapolis uh Sean Penn State comes into this game uh knowing it probably needs to play about as clean as it as it has all year to beat number one Oregon was not able to do that for 60 Minutes couldn’t overcome all the mistakes it piled up in the end yeah actually the beginning is when they couldn’t uh take those you look at what Penn State had to do their path to Victory and they accomplished a lot more than I think we thought they could especially running the football putting up yards eventually putting up points 37 points in a big 10 championship game you’ll probably take that but uh yeah it was kind of a flip the script 2016 um feeling here because your defense it did it did not come through as expected Oregon phenomenally talented the better of the two sides the faster of the two sides I thought that showed up in a big way uh but Penn State uh when it needed some stops just came up with Tad short um we talked about it on the shows earlier this week that spread was probably a little bit closer than we thought it would be Penn State showed a lot coming getting back into it but Oregon showed why the number one team in the country yeah covered a three and a half point spread as well the game went over by the way at halftime so Nate uh just your initial Impressions on this game one where pet state had a chance to potentially tie it late Drew Allard throws his second interception of the game to end that opportunity and then Lions end up losing uh like we said 4537 yeah it was It was a lot to digest to be honest with you like there was so much stuff that happened in the course of that game the officiating uh which I think we’re going to talk about later it was you know maybe not the best day for for the big 10’s best officials uh and it and it was consequential it played a lot of factors uh James brought it up in his postgame press conference uh that Abdul Carter and Deni Dennis Sutton and Devon J Thomas uh have generate uh Zan Duran obviously have generated not only sacks and pressures but many many holding calls throughout the course of the Season uh and there was not one called uh on this evening but also Penn State kind of shot itself in the foot a bunch right at the at the beginning of the game Penn State gave itself problems with really uh and again James Franklin said it you can live with the face masks you don’t like it but you can live with a face mask it’s much harder to live with the notion that uh unnecessary roughness right hits after the the whistle are are prolonging drives giving you an extra 15 yards of field position uh to help out an Oregon offense that really does not need any help to to move itself down the field uh you know but I I do think and and this is where it’s going to be very interesting to dissect over the next couple of days all all of the Penn State playmaking that we thought was possible this season offensively that never quite materialized outside of Tyler Warren happened Drew made some spectacular throws uh Nick Singleton and KRON Allen both ran for over 100 yards a piece they ran for 292 yards as a team uh that that was as Dynamic of a performance as they have had this season uh as reflected in the score of 37 points the issue obviously not enough when your defense gives up 45 Sean uh surprised by the defense giving up 45 points something you saw coming into this game I don’t I can’t remember what you picked but certainly the defense in many instances did not have an answer for the dillian gabri Dylan Gabriel TZ Johnson connection yeah I had them giving up 31 they gave that up in the first half not ideal uh for Tom Allen um and you just look at the way kind of hurts the burls award uh Canada SE yeah probably not great for that um will Stein probably should be up for that he was terrific uh Oregon’s offensive coordinator not just using the speed to get into space but just scheming things open that were I mean it wasn’t even a Speed game for for some sometimes you think about that I believe second touchdown for Oregon guys standing by themselves um you talk about Dylan Gabriel as not a dynamic playmaker AK but a terrific facilitator and then take it in on top of that using TZ Johnson who as fast as of a guy on the football field as I’ve seen probably since KJ hamler I mean that guy accelerates at a different rate and it showed tonight against Penn State’s defensive backs and uh I I thought the second and third levels of Penn State’s defense um really kind of kind of let them down that was tough to uh tough to see yes they did get some stops they got back into it uh the special teams was not uh terrible outside of a field goal by Ryan Barker that was not close um but you know it it was really interesting to look at this team look at what we thought we knew about this team and then all of a sudden the offense comes in and sort of turns it on its head you’re not expecting those kind of outputs I think eight would they end up yards per carry 8.5 or something like that with Allen with uh Nick Singleton who was very big off the bat with Drew with B who almost got a touchdown in here so I mean that gives you some sort of confidence going into whatever seed they may be for the playoff should be a home game I would think um but it’s the offensive line it is that scheme I thought Andy cotal Nikki caught a really good game and and we talk about in the big games how they’ve puckered up and that’s been regardless of who is calling the plays that wasn’t the case even even when they were down 28 to1 I’m like I can deal with this offense like this is this is something that is moving the football you know you found some holes in Oregon’s defense you exploited those holes it wasn’t just Tyler Warren got a little bit from your receivers end up not enough in the end uh they threw the the pick right here to Trey W to Trey Wallace down at the end um so you would like to see some more playmaking there but I think they got the best of what they had available to them and that includes guys like Nolan ruchie stepping in that includes that offensive line that really over the last couple of weeks I mean not not very good the last couple of weeks and they just kind of turned it on its head against the number one team in the country did not see that one coming because Oregon a really good defense defense as well so these two defenses coming in very very highly regarded nationally um they both ran into kind of a buzz saw and you know unfortunately Oregon made a couple more plays in the end and and that’s what you’ve got with that uh the Big 10 Champions yeah in less than 12 hours as we record this so whenever you might be watching it it’ll be sooner college football playoff selections will be revealed at noon on ESPN Nate the mood in the play I’m not sure what the mood was over in the main interview room but the mood in the players interview room was essentially one of we beat ourselves in this game and we can’t let it basically turn into another loss whenever they get back on the field wherever they get back on the field that was the vibe in that room and I think they all well aware of the fact that this game was at times there for the taking and they weren’t able to take it yeah I think it’s I think it’s going to be interesting and certainly you’re not going to fault Penn State James Franklin the players for thinking or coming out of this game feeling frustrated by their own mistakes but also maybe energized in a way of look look if Ohio State and Oregon aren’t two of the better teams in college football this season I don’t know who is right so so the these are really good opponents uh is it frustrating for Penn State to come up on the losing like bottom line the losing end of these decisions absolutely uh is it something that has to be corrected for its next opponent what whatever that is whether that’s uh you know hosting a playoff game or being on the road whatever whatever the situation is is whoever they play uh you can feel that no matter how good that opponent is that Penn State will be able to play with them but what I don’t know and I think has to be answered by this program is can they win right can they win the game like it it you can only do so much of like kind of feeling good about the fact that uh you’ve acquitted yourself right like you you’ve played well enough uh to prove that yeah you’re right there you are one of the best teams in the country too the Penn State is in that club it’s fine to be in the club but at some point you have to be able to to pull out that type of win and obviously Penn State wasn’t able to do that today Sean final thoughts yeah the encouraging thing about that is you look across college football at the teams that can be beaten and it’s all of them really and it’s not it’s not one Juggernaut at the top this is the number one team in the country I think they’re fantastic I also think that they have holes and you can potentially find them whether it’s Penn State whether it’s somebody that that can give them trouble Boise State who is going to be in the playoff as well gave them trouble at the beginning of the year so um I I I don’t want to get into you know you talked about be officiating you talked about uh Penn State beating themselves because I think Oregon was the better side um where you’re kind of left down by this Penn State side is the things that they can control you mentioned the penalties face mask what I mean you reach out you grab a face mask it happens a personal foul on excuse me personal foul on a Touchback I’ve never seen something like that uh venga Ian uh pushing somebody’s head into the turf I’ve seen that but not illegally like that so these are the things that they need to control and then on the execution end of it much better execution on the offensive side of the ball tackling an issue once again if you look back at that first half when Oregon was snowballing that game and almost putting it Out Of Reach Penn State’s tackling was abysmal in the sense that I believe the second Drive they’ve got a run to the left Kobe King comes right over top of him second and 10 no he gets away fresh set of downs first down those are the kind of things Kobe King Tony Roos the guys on the outside need to buckle up and when you play at such a high level because you’re you’re not going to play any bad T teams from here on out when you play at such a high level that is something that you’ve got to be on point with and I agree with Nate 100% it’s one thing to be in the mix it’s another thing to win the game final thoughts uh yeah just with the aggressiveness that Penn State showed you you see you see this uh the precipice that they’re constant on and that James Franklin balances as a program which is when you’re aggressive like that it creates turnovers sometimes right so so four as much as Penn State pushed the ball down the field try to do some things obviously throwing the ball the the the near pick six the the not pick six you know they’re they’re throwing the ball from their own End Zone they’re not handing the ball off to Nick Singleton in that situation and then at the end of the game with two minutes left to play uh you know there was more than enough time to kind of plot their way down the field there try to score get the two-point conversion and tie it up and force it to overtime okay so that’s a good football call Second and one you got you’re one-on-one on the outside take a shot down the field where you got to be hesitant you got to understand your personnel you got to understand what’s out there Penn State started to trust Trey W Trey Wallace a little bit got the touchdown here at the end but how consistently have they made those plays how consistently have they been able to do that now Drew left the ball inside you can’t do that left the ball a little bit long you can’t do that those are the things that you got to do the like you can talk about analytics you can talk about gut fields and all that kind of stuff but you got to do the math with what you have available to you and those are the calls that are going to end games and end Seasons it’s not the call that’s at issue it’s the execution and and the execution of something that they just don’t do all that much that that’s not a throw that he makes I mean at least in my recollection this season that’s not that’s just not part of uh what they do so you feel you have to do that against a team like Oregon to keep pace and to to keep up and to score the the amount of points that you feel like you need to to score but if you’re going to do that for sure but at the same time like oh okay that’s your situation it’s right it’s not your tendency because it’s not something that you’re great at and so if you are in that position you got to be able to make the play uh and obviously they weren’t able to make the play one one thing that uh Tyler Warren I I thought he had a couple of drops today that were uh one was a bad throw from from from Drew for sure one was a pretty obvious drop uh so you know kind of kind of I don’t know just just an a a weird game like that’s just my My ultimate takeaway is just just a strange Dynamic a strange flow against what you’ve seen from this Penn State team for most of the Season yep an entertaining game which is fun and I think you’re gonna have to in the college football playoff win entertaining games with a lot of points I am more encouraged by Penn State after this game because they were able to go out there and score points and you saw them score points through the year or through through the the season but today was different they went out and they had to do what they had to do again very 2016 field to this and we know that the weapons were different at that point especially in the outside but when you can string together a couple scores in a row get some stops in between and that’s the big thing the the defense has got to you know step up and and and really I guess re reel get get themselves back to where they’re at um then you’re you’re dangerous in the playoffs so I’m more encouraged coming out today nobody’s going to take that you know you you’re mad about the loss I get it um but number one team in the country Penn State showed a lot by getting back into it and I think they showed that in the playoff they’re gonna have an opportunity to beat some teams I couldn’t agree more Sean that’s Sean Fitz Nate bow I’m Greg pickle from blue white Illustrated stay tuned as we will have a complete selection Sunday coverage as Penn State finds out where it will be in the first team 12 team rather college football playoff at noon on Sunday we’ll talk to you I guess probably on Sunday maybe on Monday or Tuesday I’m not sure sometime this week as Penn State moves forward after losing the Big 10 title game here at Lucas Oil Stadium
