uh some of your some of the recruits um as far as Sunday goes um soon as we know what bowl we’re going to we’ll send an email out letting you know what sort of media availability whether it’ll probably be a zoom whether it’s Sunday night or Monday um depending on what the bowl destination is so um check your emails Sunday afternoon as far as a timeline for the media availability on that um this is being streamed on YouTube so again we ask that please raise your hand for any questions and we’ll get a microphone to you so with that coach thanks man afternoon everybody and um good to see you guys in a little warmer clam here um I’ll say a couple words about you know the game Friday night and just things in general and offer a couple thoughts on the recruiting class but like Matt said general manager tar Barnes will fill in on all the details he certainly uh runs the race from start to finish and has a lot of depth and perspective on all this stuff so um I’ll turn over to Tower here in a few minutes but uh it was good to have a weekend off for everybody you know I think everybody’s tired after the game Friday uh really tough competitive football game and pretty extreme circumstances so nice for everybody to have a time to get back and just kind of relax a little bit some guys went home other guys just stayed here but uh gave them some time and we’ll take this week to recover a little bit they had a light workout this morning we’ll probably go on the field for a little bit on Friday but not much football this week and just trying to get everybody a chance to get caught up on things catch your breath and uh recharge a little bit I think it’s really certainly important uh the game as I said Friday night afterwards you know was just a really tough competitive hard fought game and uh both teams really you I think compete at a really high level and again you know I think the takeaway biggest takeaway is that little things a lot of times are are really important and uh sometimes defy the statistics at the end of the game and uh thought our guys did a lot of things really well start with ball security still the most important statistic in football and uh you know we’ve done a good job of that all season long certainly the other night that was a factor and got to give um you know Jackson credit there you know his game stats weren’t overwhelming by any means but protected the football made good decisions good judgment out there uh but just you know a lot of little things that took place special teams really jumped out um you know the punt before the last turnover huge punt by Reese and uh again tough circumstances uh point out the plus 50 punt that Nester killed inside the you know just inside the goal line there uh that was a play that we blew on Tuesday in practice and had to repeat it right at the end of practice circled back and got it and got it right and then certainly it showed up on the game so just you know little things like that that don’t go uh maybe noticed by some people and obviously Caleb’s effort on that touchdown was phenomenal uh but something probably nobody noticed Nick the young did a great job on that he’s playing the right tackle next man in his guy didn’t rush like we expect him to or hoped he would so Nick State engaged in the blocking that along with the perimeter blockers allowed that thing to get going and then Caleb did the rest on his own so you know you you can’t help but notice Caleb’s great effort but they’re little things that uh assisted the uh you know the start of that play really made a big difference the thing I’d mention too is just our job art specialist did in the weather conditions whether it be the Snappers the holders punters obviously the return guys uh that’s a little in those kind of kind of circumstances that kind of condition and uh our guys really played Flawless there so all those little things to me were really the matter of uh you know the deciding things for us and uh just really proud of our guys the way they fought through it um really happy about the way we’ve been playing in November and talk to our guys every year about that you know November is a month where people are you know sore you’re tired uh got a lot of guys injured next Men End stories weather typically is going to be unpredictable and you know two weeks ago we had beautiful weather game that went by Script and the other night we had tough weather and a game that didn’t go by script so just kind of you know emblematic of the way it is in November and uh to me the teams that can focus through those things tend to do a little bit better and uh just really proud of the guys the way they played this past November and really we’ve got a nice streak going since 19 right now so we’re going to try to keep building on that but you know if you’re going to win in football you’ve got to be able to do that so happy about that uh the guys have played hard they’ve played competitively and uh the good thing is we still one more opportunity to play again so really really excited about that as well um I think it’s a real important time right now for everybody just to step back a little bit and let things settle lot going on and I addressed this a couple Sundays ago coming off the last bye we had um as we look forward you know our guys are living in a world that’s very different than 10 years ago you know players have always been thinking about the NFL whether it’s seniors you know it’s it’s right right around the corner for NFL opportunities with that comes agents uh and then certainly nowadays you know you got underclassman thinking about it more readily than than maybe 10 years ago so that’s one more thing and then you know clearly things have changed now the portal nil Revenue sharing roster reductions there’s a million things uh going on and a lot of people giv advice on all those topics too so my encouragement a couple Sundays ago was let’s put all that on the shelf and that’s what you got early December for so you right now our guys are you know taking time and U you know working through some things uh I know some guys have already made announcements about what they’re going to do do and and that’s what this time period’s for so you know there’s not a lot to say right now until things settle but hopefully we get back on and get get going in Earnest uh you know we’ll know where our bull trip is going to be uh on Sunday and then we’ll start uh you know shifting our focus a little bit hopefully we’ll be settled by them but uh my point is like there’s there’s a lot going on out there and uh I applaud our guys for you know putting it aside for those last two weeks and just focusing on you know finishing strong so happy about that um and really the reality of it is and it just kind of leaps into transitions into this recruiting class you know what we’re looking for guys that are going to fit one all in our environment uh you know embrace the things that we think are important and you know we want to recruit guys that you know understand hard work is necessary to be good in anything uh talk to our guys all the time about like if you’re going to earn get something that’s worth it you got to earn it and that’s a you know degree nobody’s going to hand you anything in the classroom certainly out there on the field nobody hand you anything that was evident Saturday or Friday night and and you know if you want playing time Awards all those kinds of things you know you got to go out and earn it so we’re trying to find guys that you know we think can you know Embrace that understand that and embrace that our job is to help them understand that better as they get here uh but it all starts with that obviously there’s a talent level that’s requisite uh you know we’re not a big height weight speed team but uh you know we’re looking for guys that you know have ability to play possession play their positions well and do things that their position add to the football team and um you know obviously character I think it’s a huge part of the component too cuz it’s a tough race to run to be one of those seniors 24 seniors got announced Friday night that’s that’s a long hard race and it takes character to do that and uh so that’s a big part of it too and you know if you look at two of the guys they’re noteworthy guys on our football team whe you talk about Jay Higgins we’ve talked a lot about him his story We behind a really good player uh and Jack Campbell and then when he got his opportunity just took it and ran and did an unbelievable job you think about Caleb uh you know even his going back to August I wasn’t sure who our best running back was of the three I think it’s pretty evident right now uh but it’s evident because he’d me made that happen not not us you know he made that choice really got focused year three and uh you know the maturity the experience all those things uh came to his benefit and he he just did a wonderful job so you know those are the kind of stories that are fun that’s what we enjoy in coaching I think and being around players like those two and all the other guys we get to work with so uh that’s the big single best best part about it and so it transitions into this class you know we got 17 guys coming uh joining us today really excited about that uh 15 full scholarship guys two guys that are preferred Walk-Ons and we think very very highly of all 17 guys I think they embody the things I just talked about t all detail these guys a little bit but uh just you know big thing for us is we’re eager to get them here on campus it’s been fun to get to know them get to know their families and uh have them get to know us a little bit it is a long extensive process and tars on the front end of each and every step of it and um you know does an awful lot of work behind the scenes but it’s you know it’s not accidental how things come together we’re really excited about the guys and it be great to get them here whether it be this spring or uh next June really good to have them join us and you know can you talk about stories like calebs you talk about Jay’s story and then you just wonder who the next one’s going to be there’s opportunity for everybody but all those things I talked about they’re they’re really uh you know part and parcel of this whole thing so exceptional group of guys really happy to get them here and uh you know just think they’re all going to be great fits in our program so eager to start that whenever it begins I’ll go a and throw it out for questions I’ll turn over to to and I’ll just finish up by saying too let me just congratulate our award winners uh I’m not going to list every guy but you know it’s it’s unbelievable you think about Caleb being the Big 10 running back of the year uh Jay linebacker of the year and then OU being The Returned guy of the year I think it’s really speaks highly of all three of those guys Connor and Logan being First Team guys go right down the list all those guys have earned it they’re is tremendous young people so happy for them to get that recognition well deserved I’ll throw it out John steppie Gazette um first of all evaluating the quarter or could you kind of evaluate where you kind of feel the quarterback position is right now and is that a position that you plan on addressing the Bal um yeah we’re definitely going to look you know and just see uh probably every position but there are certain things that are a little bit more important uh anything we can do to help our football team we’re we’re going to do that uh but I’ve said this many times and I know to will say the same thing we’re not trying to build through the portal if we can supplement our team we’ll do that on quarterback is a unique position you know clearly nationally so we’d be fools not to at least you know see what’s available and see what might be of interest both ways um but yeah as it stands right now you know we should have Brandon back he should be full speed here for the bowl game he could have played the other night I don’t know how effectively but he could have played he practiced uh but you know and then uh Jackson’s done a great job and then you know we’ll just kind of take it from there I expect Marco to be uh the good news is I think he’s out of that cast now so he’s got a a brace on so at least maybe we’ll have three guys that actually play quarterback at quarterback imagine that Tyler tashman with the de Mo register now that I Caleb is you know he declared for the draft how do you just kind of put into words the season he had and where he kind of ranks in in the hierarchy of running backs you’ve coached you know what I just said is really true um as we went into Camp I was sure who our best back was um so it’s just kind of funny how it goes and I’ll throw lean in there too had a you know bad ankle still he had missed a lot of time so it was one position you’re always curious about the whole team how it’s going to look and how it goes through camp but that was that was a position was a jump ball for all the guys involved and uh Caleb has always had ability tailing he’s always been a great young guy but as I’ve said all season long I think the big differences this year is just a different level of focus and again just in generic terms like year three seems to be a magical year in general terms for guys in our program um and certainly for him it was he just he everything he did was at a higher level uh just being a teammate I mean everything about him um but the details the way he prepared and it it showed in his playe too he’s more patient just saw things better a little bit more patient knew how to read things out a little bit better and uh more more detailed with his footwork things like that so you know that that’s that’s a fun part and then I mean the play he made the other night somebody said the best on Friday night it was like Cooper’s play only accounted you know but the impact it had and it’s like you know you got to look at the replay a couple times to say how did he do that and he gets a lot of credit for a lot of that because that’s just you know he’s physically strong and boy he’s using his strength now he wasn’t doing that maybe a year ago two years ago Scott dman the athletic I wanted to kind of go back to quarterback just to see maybe what you might be looking for um because you have the potential to have Brenan Sullivan back for another year are you looking for somebody who’s Maybe younger that could be the number two and and build into that or are you looking for somebody to walk in to be or to compete for number one right away who has kind of a proven track record yeah I think you know the general answer on that is we’re looking at everything um again the whole idea is to to improve our team as much as we can and we’re not locked into one style per se because we do have different styles right now uh in that room and have head so and we’ve won with both both Styles you know through the years um so we’ll just keep an open mind see what’s available and um not bound ourselves to any you know doesn’t have to be a division one or you know FCS player or whatever I guess we’re FCS right nowadays I get that stuff mixed up need some alphabet soup but um yeah know we’re just we’re just looking for somebody who’s going to lead the team and move the team and uh brendon’s done a good job of that we’re here to work with him I think he’s got a really good future uh you know Jackson’s really intriguing and Marco’s a great young guy so we’ve got a good room but if we can add to it we’ll consider any options is as long as they fit you know our parameters yep CHL to code and one register um might be a long-winded question here uh so it seems like everybody I’ve talked to like inside the building like they I mean they say you’re G to be back next year outside the building you know something I don’t know no no I’m this it happens every year people outside this is this Kirk’s last year how can you come back with you know all this stuff going on paying players like he’s not going to put up with this forever but it seems like you’re defini coming back next year and like my plan yeah is your seems like there’s always stuff going on you notice that you’ve been quite covering us for a long time somehow we just keep keep moving forward but uh yeah I mean I’m there’s a lot of things that uh I don’t want to say frustrated but a lot a lot of things really you know make you step back a little bit and thinking like that’s interesting um but but the more the game changes the more the circumstances change uh it’s still about being around good people and an AR key is what we enjoy I think I think I speak for our whole state you know when you get the right guys on your team it’s a lot of fun and you know we’re 100 plus population so not everybody’s going to be perfect and we’re not all going to be best buddies but I think there’s a mutual respect amongst our team and and people in the program and um you know to be part of that on a daily basis is pretty special so you know I’m enjoying that part of it there are things that frustrate you obviously at times injuries frustrate you can’t do a thing about them but it’s just part of the game uh and I wish it was 20Β° warmer the other night quite frankly but you know a lot of things you can’t control but but the good stuff is still the good stuff and that hasn’t changed and that’s that’s the fun part about this thing two more for Tom Tom ker Hawkeye Report Kirk one of the good changes I think that the NCAA made was coaches are not on the road during December now which seemed like a sane decision um uh how does that impact your practice schedule for bull prep because in the past you guys basically just had to practice on weekends now can you can you operate differently yeah that’s you know I just talked about all the the changes that players are experiencing over the last you know 10 years let’s say this is really random for us in the end of the season is always a weird thing anyway for anybody plays or coaches when it’s over it’s just like now what do we do it’s one of those things so in the old days yeah old days being like last year everybody got in their car got on a plane and went somewhere and it’s really strange for all of us to be in the building right now to your point so that’s a great point so I’m still trying to figure out what the hell we’re doing uh but first and foremost we’re spending time with our players the guys on our roster uh not physically but just meeting with them touching base things you can’t don’t have time for in season kind of do a you know sit down that way um and then we we’ll start into the football but um and it’s it’s sitting on my desk on the top right hand corner right now it’s like my next file to go to how we’re going to map out the month not knowing where we’re going or when we’re going uh but I think the one takeaway and gear give you which is good um we won’t be up here at night hopefully because you know when you’re doing recruiting and practice I remember distinctly just things you stick with you going down to the U Capital One b04 getting on the plane and I had not I’d see maybe about 10% of the film I needed to see so me I got down there it was just like you know Ground Hog Day uh with with video bit um just felt so behind cuz I’d gotten off a plane like at 3:00 in the morning the day before coming back from Connecticut I think it was if I know it was and um so you know this is a more sane schedule so that’s good yeah there’s a positive there good thing that’s in a good column anything else going in there I don’t know yeah that’s good so uh David eel hawkey inside.com Kirk you you opened up by talking about all the continued changes that are going on in this calendar I guess maybe a two-part question one how do you kind of divide up your time right now between probably trying to retain players go through meetings look at the transfer portal recruit the right type of guys for the transfer portal because we know that you don’t throw out offers to just anybody and then obviously practicing and preparing for the bowl game and then is there any way that they could stretch out all this Pro like process to like make it a little bit easier on the coaches and selfishly the media a little bit yeah well they’re not thinking about you or us I don’t think on that on that category so to probably can have some of the ansers some of those better uh than I can but you you touched on something that you know I probably should have put in my points and part of the visits with our players right now is just find out where the guys are at cuz I did ask them to put it off for two weeks so you know now is the time to think about it ask questions you know are you happy with your role here’s what we see uh and everybody’s got an opportunity to Excel and move up and all that kind of thing but uh spending time with our players as first and foremost because we do want to we want our team to be our team and then if we can supplement with guys that are great fits you know U whether it’s the two guys we picked up solivan and Gil this past summer you know go back to Nick Jackson Rusty fth so you know you get those kind of guys that come in just kind of just hit the ground running that’s a perfect match there supplement your team but yeah I mean tar can talk about the calendar a little bit but to me just as I said it it looks good like you know hopefully in the real world here where our guys will be our coaches will be home with their families next week eating dinner and you that’s a change in December so there’s some some benefit to this stuff too maybe and maybe a little less time on the weekends you know coming in practicing that type of deal although I got to find out like if recruits I don’t even know he can tell you if recruits can come in we’ll be out there on the weekends open house but yeah that’s part of the Enterprise too okay thank you guys see you a little bit good afternoon it’s uh to say it’s my eighth year now being being in front of everybody talking about our our signing classes as coach kind of hit to there’s been a lot that’s changed not only in college football as and as a whole obviously recruiting I have a lot more gray hair maybe a little more seasoned um but but every year it’s fun uh it’s fun to celebrate our class you know there’s a lot of work it’s two or three years in the making with all of these guys goes back to seeing these guys at high schools at their games getting them on campus for our camps for junior days unofficial visits you know summer official visits now um and it’s not I’m I know I’m the one that has to talk to you guys all the time but it really is it takes a village to to put together a recruiting class from our coaching staff that does a great job to our support staff there’s some in the building here professors on campus academic support um and then mostly our players you know our players are obviously they’re vital in helping us recruit guys host guys on their own campus and uh and we really look to their feedback um you know it’s a smaller class this year only 15 scholarship guys um two Walk-Ons which is very different than years past obviously the two Walk-Ons and that number being so low is due to the 105 number as we’re going through and trying to restructure roster there’s just not as much space as we once had so that’s something that’s definitely unique for us usually we’ve always got 10 to 12 uh Walk-Ons that are committed at this point so this you’re only having two uh definitely a little bit different um it’s really a Midwest class I think we’ve got what 12 of our 15 commitments scholarship commitments are from surrounding states or within that six or 7even hour radius I think 11 of them are from Iowa or states that are touching so um then we got a few you know couple guys from Florida um one from Massachusetts lives in Massachusetts goes the school in Connecticut uh but but it really is kind of a tight Midwest class um and it’s you know as a whole kind of hit what we needed to uh right now more than ever you know the the fluidity in your roster it’s it’s it’s ever changing so you’re trying to project what spots you need from a high school standpoint from a portal standpoint um coaches have the tendency to overreact sometimes at any given point in the year whether it’s Spring ball or fall Camp uh you know based on what their what their room looks like but you know you have to be in constant communication with Coach fence the coordinator is a position coaches on just what the Outlook of the room looks like and and now more than ever you know we we’ve condensed those spots so right now you know as you can imagine coach Parker is trying to get more spots on the defensive side of the football um and he showed me his algebra equation on his board in his office that I did not understand at all uh but that’s what they’re trying to do you know initially when I sat down and kind of looked at where our roster was and what our budget was for each position each side of the ball and you condense it down um you realize that 105 is still a lot of players but going from 130 to 105 you’re you’re really cutting a lot of a lot of meat off the bone so it’s been a fun exercise um we’re we’re still talking through it as a staff and kind of figuring out where we’re going and how we want to budget everything um but it certainly played a role into this class being a little bit smaller this year and as coach said our goal is always to build through the high school ranks um just like the NFL builds through the draft our transfer portal is the NFL’s free agency uh we’d like to go out and fill some holes that that if we have some we’ll do that with the transfer portal we will be active in the transfer portal I will not get into spefic specifics and I know the question will come about what positions we’re going after you guys all follow me on Twitter you can probably see some of the follows I have you can probably put two and two together and figure that out uh but that’ll ramp up on Monday you know obviously there’s some kids already in the portal uh grad transfers there’s some some kids that are coming from schools where their staff unfortunately got fired so it’s already started a little bit but uh I think Monday the Avalanche is really coming and and that’s kind of where myself and our Personnel department will dive into that with our coaches uh it’ll be good and one thing to to kind of duvail what coach is talking about with the calendar change having our coaches here in December and not being on the road for not only roster retention but when you’re trying to look to kind of fill some holes through the portal is also a huge Advantage um the last couple of Decembers have been pure chaos you don’t know what day it is what’s going on you’re trying to retain your roster get ready for a big 10 title game a Bull game you’re out on the road recruiting it’s just pure chaos I think this is one thing the NCA did get right it’s a step in the right direction but as a whole I think the calendar maybe needs to be blown up and start over again but not sure when that’ll happen but with that I’ll open up to any questions you may have about the class in general hey Tyler La CL hawy Beacon wanted to ask about anante Dean I know he was your most recent signy commit um had heard that he has the idea of playing defense and offense um was was curious about your your thoughts on his just his versatility and playmaking but also had had seen that Louisville made a little bit of a late push were you were you sweating yeah yeah you know we usually have uneventful Sig in days um and I thought we were headed that way I was actually at the basketball game with my son last night um and didn’t see dicks make the game-winning shot because I was looking down at my phone to a text I didn’t expect to receive uh with some not so great news uh so it was a later night than I would like to admit but uh we we got it done and Taye is awesome I mean actually Rett smes who’s in the back of the room we had we had Taye on our board as a running back uh for about a year and a half and um he doesn’t have his film put on huddle which is kind of interesting every kid in America does at this point and red it brought up he was like Hey you know have you watched alante Dean have you seen his defensive stuff and we put it on it was like yeah this kid’s this kid’s a little bit different you know and he’s a kid he plays everything you know from safety to outside backer to running back to receiver um he can kind of do it all and a lot of the safeties we’ve had here that have been pretty good football players you know they had the ball in their hands in high school as well um for us you know he he’s going to be strictly a safety where he fits back in those back three you know we’ll see uh we really don’t go out and try and recruit a strong a free a cash we try and find the best safeties and and when they get here we let Phil kind of do his magic and see where they fit best but he’s certainly got some versatility he’s an awesome kid big personality um he’s a country boy which is funny is from Tampa but very country uh talked about Rett was a caught alligators like that’s what he do in his spare time uh which is interesting he’s got gigantic hands so he could probably you know grasp those things like that but no we’re excited about Tay and um you know every year there’s going to be some some bumps in the road in terms of recruiting guys and some second thoughts but uh you know Mom was great through the process she want him to be a Hawkeye and just took a little bit of talking a little little massaging late last night and and we got it done and here we are yeah I was sweating a little bit this morning but when when he signed it was good yeah David eel hawkey insider.com Tyler this is kind of maybe a load to question but number one like do you feel like you understand the job now more than you did maybe two years ago just because of how much things are changing and I know you said you’d like to see them blow up the calendar and start over but if you could see one realistic change right away I mean what would you like to implement and yeah just kind of how this next month is going to go and how you divide up your time yeah it’s uh obviously things have evolved so much in the last 3 years 5 years seven years but where we’re at just from the you know the transfer portal which we’ve always had a transfer portal just obviously it got publicized a lot more a few years ago um then you add in nil into that which has changed things now you have Revenue sharing coming which is certainly going to change things that we’re working through with that um I’ve been more probably I’ve been able to take a little bit more of a step back in terms of high school recruiting you know I’ve got a great staff with Rhett and Matt Spalding and Scott South made you know Rhett pops through like 200 guys a day he’s a machine when it comes to evaluating and that helps cuz then I can kind of take a step back and look at our roster and just kind of see the big picture of things you know and that that’s been a huge help you know the portal is still we don’t have a portal department where we’re watching film all fall along and I was listening to uh think might have been Virginia Tech coach pry head coach there worked with at Vanderbilt he said that you know they’ve got everything ranked and listed out before the portal opens on any potential guy that could hit the portal and it’s like what happens if 90% of those guys in that position don’t hit the portal you just wasted somebody’s time watching all those guys and and we’re in a world now where you you hear Whispers And you hear murmur of who’s going to hit the portal so you can certainly stay ahead of things obviously but um you know it’s I love the idea of putting a team together U you know I’m a people person I like talking to people I love interacting with the kids and their parents and their family when they’re on campus here and seeing how that whole that whole puzzle is going to go together I love being around our guys so it is different it’s certainly different my role is well there’s a lot of things that are certainly the same there’s there’s definitely things that have changed too um and really just kind of taking it as all these changes happen you know I mean I don’t think you know the changes aren’t done it’s going to keep evolving and you got to keep an open an open mind everything and just kind of a fresh ey on how can we get better and how can we do everything we need to do within the framework of Iowa football and what coach ference wants in his program I mean that’s that’s the biggest goal in mind um in terms of the change honestly the best change they’ve made is not going out in December in my opinion just the craziness of you know we’ve got a 128 free agents on our roster right now that’s the reality um it’s what it is and and trying to retain your team send coaches out to recruit which it’s a long season and it’s a you know if coaches tell you they look forward to go out going out in December they’re 100% lying to you they don’t want to go out getting them ready to go out is always a challenge and then you add in just the portal and everything we’ve had the past couple years being able to keep them here and get face to face time with their guys and get a sense on where our guys are at where our team’s at is huge I mean it’s it’s it’s a big deal and this this is a dead week for the first time too so this is different we can’t even have guys on campus this week which again is needed because this is a first week after after the season’s over to be able to spend time with guys but we’re certainly going to have a bunch of traffic through here um we’re not getting any weekends off sorry coach fing we’ll definitely have guys on on campus really the next two weeks until that Dead period hits again before we go out to our bowl game so we’ll certainly be active and then that could be high school wise too you know we got to move on to the 26 and 27 classes as well and and you know we may or may not end up taking another guy or two out of the high school in in 25 class as well so Scott excuse me Scott dockman with the athletic I wanted to ask about quarterback and part of it is last handful of years to six seven years it’s it’s been a struggle in the The Freshman part of things um the one you just brought in got moved to wide receiver almost immediately along with others who’ve transferred out and then then then the portal the results were the results what are you how are you evaluating quarterback are you evaluating it differently than maybe you did before when you were working with with Brian or Ken or anybody like that and how much of a role does does Tim Lester play and who you decide to pursue whether that’s in the portal or even somebody like Jimmy Sullivan or Ryan Fitzgerald yeah um you know when we evaluate quarterbacks it’s 100% going to be we’re going to work around who the offens coordinator and the quarterback’s coach is um absolutely and you know styles are going to change um you’d always you don’t you don’t want statues back there unless he’s got just absolute Elite arm talent but even then the you know you see it I mean football it’s an imperfect game you can have a great o line but at some point something’s going to break down where you got to be able to move a little bit uh but Tim I mean Tim played the position at a high level he’s coached the position for a long time you know he knows exactly what he’s looking for and exactly what he wants but he’s also open-minded too you know obviously we had Kad and so this year two very different quarterbacks and then you throw with Jackson um and Marco you know you’ve got four different styles there that you can work with um there are certain characteristics that Tim you know r wants to see but a big part a huge part of of the quarterback thing that people don’t really talk about is is you can be the most talented guy in the world but in between the ears is is where it’s all going to it’s all going to take place there um and just having a chance to get guys on campus and dig through them and what they really know conceptually what can they handle um you know go through four or five of our play calls and see if you can regurgitate it back to us with all the assignments and what you see there and that and that’s a big part of it um you know the good news uh you know it’s different this year Tim’s actually not going out on the road recruiting I actually took his place this year and because he wanted to be on campus all spring with Jimmy and if we happen to bring in another guy to spend as much time as possible with those guys getting them into our Playbook and understanding the offense you know and that includes soy right now you know soy got here in June it’s probably drinking out of a fire hose all season I think you’re going to see big strides from soy coming up too as he gets another Spring ball under his belt in this offense and Tim being able to be around him and kind of go through that but Tim is a great recruiter um I don’t know how many times you guys have had a chance to really talk to Tim full of energy uh really really smart guy and when you know I feel really great about not just quarterbacks but any offensive recruit we bring in here Tim is absolutely going to meet with him because he knocks it out of the park he’s really good in that he’s good with families know he’s a former head coach so he knows how to go about recruiting but for him I mean he thoroughly just enjoys talking to people and when you get on quarterback play like you got to put a timer on it because it might take a while but he’s he’s really good in front of people so I mean I’m looking forward to you know continuing to work with Tim um you know we’ve got some guys identified in the next class in the 27 class we’re kind of on to the 27 class which is crazy to think about quarterback wise but quarterbacks are always the first ones to go they’re the earliest guys so you kind of got to say a step ahead of it Chad L to Cod to Mo register do you do you already know like if guys like Logan Jones and Ethan heret are coming back or you I don’t know there’s probably others that maybe could um yes and no okay yes and no there’s still some conversations taking place yeah okay so probably might no um uh how are you dealing with this 105 thing is you you said 128 so you’re basically going from 128 to 105 is that kind of what you’re saying correct yep I mean do you do you envision having more than 105 in June before you get down to do you make Cuts is it like Hard Knocks I mean what what uh you know how are you approaching that this cut down thing the smaller class certainly is part of it for sure it’s a it’s a great uh conversation we’ve talked about a bunch as a staff you know we have to be at 105 by the start of fall Camp next year um and I think you know there’s there’s a few different populations on our team there’s guys that’ll 100% want to go transfer and play somewhere else um there’s guys that will want to stay and and you know fight like hell to make the 105 and stay in the spring go through that and then I think there’s some guys that may say hey I’ll go through the spring but I’m going to call it up and just finish my my undergraduate degree here and graduate from Iowa and not play somewhere else um so we we’ve left the door open for everybody to come back in the spring uh you certainly have to have those conversations to give these kids a heads up CU if they want to hit the portal now you know you you want Do It um I’ve talked to some teams where they don’t they aren’t going to tell anybody until the spring uh which I think morally and ethically is just kind of wrong you know cuz then that that window is a little bit different than this window so um there’s really just there’s tears of guys uh there’s been a lot of conversations had and hard conversations you know we told all these kids um you know we want you to be on the team and we told their families we’re going to take care of you and because of a rule change that we didn’t foresee coming you know we’ve got to make some some cuts and and have some tough conversations but we’ve left it open everybody can stay through the spring if they want um and if guys aren’t going to go transfer somewhere else and play then we’ we’d happily keep them through the summer too up until that fall Camp date so there’s there’s a lot of a lot of guys are probably kind of taking the conversations they’ve had and thinking about it and talking to their families but you know we’ll know a little bit more I think once we get through our bowl game and uh have a better idea of of where our roster sits at that point but a big part of it too with the 105 is just practice you know that’s we haven’t we haven’t dove into that yet but you know we may have to restructure how we practice because you’re losing 25 to 28 bodies uh that you’re counting on for scout team and just how you go about it so uh there’s certainly some changes that I’m not sure if the NCA really saw coming with this drastic cut but again everybody’s got to do it so you know and everybody around the country is probably having conversation similar to what our staff is is doing right now so it’s um it’s unfortunate but it’s where we are Tyler jman with the de Mo register um this isn’t my actual question but do you know Josh made the shot just by the crowd or uh I did yes I did uh my son let me know too but I was still in disbelief by the text I got yeah I was trying to process that not real happy about it but yeah it worked out I saw it like two hours later on Twitter u i saw the highlight of it so it worked out yeah um teren Smith just curious um how that recruitment folded from your end what what you feel like he brings to the program yeah teren um you know coach Wallace really was the first person to bring up Terrence had a couple of offers nothing crazy um and he had he had been through the school and just sent a text to Matt Spa like hey you mind taking a look at this kid we both popped him on and Terence is a big kid you know he’s he’s the first guy off the bus type of guy like that’s that’s what you want to that’s what you want to play with um Elite basketball player really good Hooper you know had some lower level D1 interest in basketball as well when you see teren he’s got big hands um you know 50-50 balls are not 5050 balls for Terrence you know there are 75 25 balls he really is great at going up and high pointing the ball um and again at the same point he’s still raw too like there’s still a lot of growth that that you’re going to see out of them but another really good kid parents are good people um comes from a high school or they historically don’t have a lot of D1 guys you know if he were 30 minutes east in Chicago a little bit closer he probably had 25 offers um how he didn’t get more offers is is kind of crazy to me uh but you know he’s a kid we’re excited about you know we’ve got a couple bigger guys on the outside um you know now that the next goal is finding a guy that can really run you know we’re looking for Speed um and we talked about potentially taken two in uh in this class here but we we really don’t lose anybody in the wide receiver room so again with that budget and and everything it plays a factor into that but uh as as a big ex possession receiver and Terence can run too but that that’s a guy you want to look for and we’re excited to get him here take four more John SE is that P Tower um want to ask about the revenue share um are you talking numbers with players is kind of now they’re making all of a sudden these decisions about their Futures not quite yet uh we’re getting there not quite yet uh that’s something I probably spend a bulk of my day on every day it almost gets tiresome looking at the same spreadsheet and just moving numbers around and kind of playing with models a little bit uh there are a couple guys that have decisions to make on a roster that that is coming here very soon um and they know that and um it’s it it might play a factor in whether they they stay or they leave U but at least you know the good news is now we can go to guys unlike the past that hey you might be a fifth or sixth round pick you should come back and and money is always a an issue for those guys well I need to go get money well now we can provide a money and maybe hey you come back and increase your draft stock and this small investment we’re making in you turns into you making a couple three four more million dollars next year by coming back so uh we’re not deep into the Weeds on those conversations but it’s certainly coming soon yeah Tom ker Hawkeye Report um Kirk’s always been about telling guys hey go finish out your senior year this year is an an unusual amount of players that are enrolling early for you seven guys yeah seven early and Ras as of right now is that going to be kind of an offshoot of hey maybe we need more bodies in the spring now because you’re going to be down to 105 eventually maybe not this year but years forward we talked about that um and we’ve never pressed kids to come early and obviously we recruit a lot of multiport athletes and usually guys that are pretty good at the other sports they play um there are a couple guys that aren’t coming early that I would love to get here early but I I get it you know I get what what they want to stay for uh but I don’t think we’ll ever make it a demand that you need to come early but we’ll certainly I think because of spring you know cuz you lose your senior class and you don’t technically have your freshman class in moving forward practice wise that that’s going to be an issue so I think we might encourage guys um but some guys you know they just want to stay and finish out their senior which we get but I think you’re going to see you know it’s already started around the country but I think more and more around the country you’re going to see staffs really try and press guys that graduate early and get on campus in the spring just from a a body standpoint you know CU then after the season you have guys that have postseason surgeries I mean your lot your roster is just really it’s really shrunk at that point so um this is an OD year for us to have seven guys I think that’s the most out of high school we’ve ever had and we didn’t push any of the guys to do it I think it’s a lot of the guys that’s that’s wor it’s turning to high school too a lot of guys can’t wait to I loved my time in high school I wouldn’t want to go to college early but a lot of guys are just ready to get out of high school and get started playing football so it’s you know we’ve talked about it but it’s certainly going to play a factor in some of those recruitments moving forward yeah bringing a bog KWQC Joey Van wet Singa is going to join his brother Rusty next year kind of what stood out to you about him and what did that recruiting process look like yeah Joey’s a strong silent type you know he didn’t say a whole lot I think he kind of lets his pads in his helmet do all the Talking uh but Joey he’d been to camp probably two or three times on both sides of the ball as an O linan and D lineman and you know he’s Joy’s a really powerful explosive tough kid kind of the epitome of how we recruit both sides of the football here you know and initially we offer Joey out of a camp where he was playing dline um and we didn’t know which side we were going to take him on we just knew we wanted Joey on the football team and obviously his dad’s a head coach you love head coaches Sons um but you know it’s it’s funny Joey’s here all the time and I think I hear him say four or five words on his official visit his brother hosted him so we saw a little bit more personality come out of him more trash talking than anything else but um he’s just he’s your typical Iowa lineman like that’s exactly what we’re looking for kind of the strong silent type the guys that don’t talk much and do what he does on a football field those are the guys that scary a little bit in a good way yeah in a good way last question hey Tyler La Club Hawkeye Beacon um I don’t know how I’m the first one to ask about yosea panessa but um that was another one that sounded like it was a little bit more I don’t know if contentious is the right word but competitive with with a few other schools um two-parter here sorry um and then it looks like you got a slew a tight ends coming in with with three different guys one of them being a legacy and and a guy that could play wide receiver or tight end um so just wanted to ask about both of those things yeah Yos um kind of joked with epie and Stephanie it’s just you know I wish you had more kids because then you wouldn’t have enough time to go out and visit all these other schools like you’re doing with yose you know with AJ and and his sister Sam they were always busy and Eric I was like man the fifth kid like this or the fourth kid sorry this is tough cuz now you actually can go see things um but that that family is awesome and you you know sometimes when you’re recruiting legacies and especially he’s had two brothers here obviously everybody knows his dad is a hulkey through and through sometimes you worry about is does this kid want to go do his own thing and is this the one that’s going to go fors their own path uh but they great through the whole process and and that’s the one where we kind of let it play out and we knew we were always going to be in it to the end um whether we W out or not you know there are some times we worried a little bit more than than other times but I think you know we got him here on a visit weekend he wasn’t here with our big official visit weekend he came a couple weeks before and we had a Legacy Event where a lot of our alumni came back and and I think just epie being around everybody and and yose seeing kind of how everybody you know operates around each other AJ came back for that visit which was huge um I think that visit just that that really pushed things over the top for us um and again we don’t we don’t pressure anybody and we certainly weren’t going to pressure yose we wanted him to want to come here on his own and not because his brothers went here and his dad went here and um and it was good you know I think he knew for a while uh even coming into that visit that this is where he wanted to be uh but we again we just kind of let it play out and uh we had a lot of things working in our in our favor obviously with the family and and AJ coming back I think was huge too and but even we had to tell AJ like hey back off a little bit like you know it’s it’s okay like we need your help but just you know tone it down some uh but obviously excited to get him here he’s one I wish were coming in January but it’s fine we’ll get him here in June and get him up and rolling and then tight ends yeah it’s um you know Mason is it’s it’s it is challenging recruiting a coaching staff son it’s very different you know because you don’t want to overp your bounds sometimes you you know mace when I got back mace was you know a little kid I’ve known M since he’s been like two or three so and sometimes you forget about him it’s like man oh yeah Mason’s herez in the building all the time so uh but Mason’s a guy you know we didn’t know if he was going to be a receiver or tight end you know I think we’re going to start him in the tight end room um you know kind of Noah fanish if you will you know he’s a guy he can really run awesome ball skills very fluid um and he can just be a mismatch out there and I think it’s a guy that Tim is kind of looking forward to as a new toy to have in that room so we’d only set out to take two tight ends in this class but we also weren’t going to not take Mason if he wanted to come and that’s kind of the conversation we had as a staff we told the other two guys that that’s how it was going to play out if it plays out this way we are going to take Mason and there’s a chance he’ll be a tight end um you know Thomas obviously speaks for himself you know highly recruited kid in the State uh thankfully comes from a Hawkeye family they’ve had season tickets forever um and same with him you know kind of let that whole recruiting process play out I think we we knew we were in a good spot but you know he was he was seeing the places he wanted to see so then ultimately made the you know finally made the call and then Eli Johnson’s a guy who you know he’s from uh Wisconsin but he’s 25 minutes from Minneapolis uh and how Minnesota and Wisconsin weren’t all over this kid before we got to him is unbelievable cuz he stands out like a sore thumb you know he’s 65 he’s 225 lbs really good basketball player very good football player and obviously once we offered him he picked up some traction but um you know those are kind of we’ve had a bunch of stories with tight ends like that players all over the board but spe specifically tight ends that are kind of Diamonds in the Rough if you will uh so we’re excited about all three guys coming here Abdul should be really excited you know it’s his room is it’s young you don’t mind is ADD you right now but there there’s some talent in there and obviously those three guys will certainly add to that room thank you everybody I appreciate it thank you for
