because Iowa State’s a great basketball team pretty un dedly Iowa is a basketball team I don’t know how good is this Iowa team Riley they’re fun they’re fun like they normally are like pton sford Josh dicks give you some guys like samford’s hitting a lot of Pull-Up jumpers he’s making his three-point shots well not as a high of clip as you’d expect Owen Freeman still kind of doing like breakout Fringe NBA player things uh that’s that’s kind of the the gist of it from what I’ve seen of Iowa so far like I think defensively they’re still a Civ but that’s not really anything new Under Fran I just don’t know if they quite have the star power to make up for it that some of the better Iowa teams have for example I think I mean you’re probably very familiar with this game against Michigan it seemed like your team got whatever they wanted along the interior against that Iowa that Iowa front line um I think Michigan shot like 73% from two that game and was four from 20 from three still scored 85 points shooting four for 20 like that to me tells you everything you know need to know about this Iowa defense and for as defensive minded as Iowa state is they got a guy in kashon Gilbert who is like a top 10 Kim pom Player of the Year candidate right now who can score in bunches it’s not like I get it once you get once you get to uh to March I still I I give Credence to the TJ otzelberger fear of his offense is stalling out but for a non-conference game in ases I think this Cyclone’s offense can hum a little bit Yeah I uh I completely agree Ralph made the point on ball up top on Tuesday you can watch the full episode on the sleepers Channel but um typically you think Iowa Iowa State you think offense from Iowa versus defense from Iowa State uh the offense That’s rated in the top seven in the country is Iowa State this time around they have a better offense than Iowa so it’s shocking to be honest like I I knew that Gilbert was playing really well but I I even doing prep for this somehow I glossed over that fact that Iowa state is a top eight in the country in in offense yeah they’ve been fantastic I I think it makes sense when you start to dig into the Personnel even if it does didn’t at first but like Gilbert and Lipsy are essentially awesome like they were a great backourt last year super just experienced at this point they know how to play together Curtis Jones is a bucket Milan momchilovich is a guy that will play in the NBA one day he’s shooting 50% from three this year I honestly feel like momchilovich could be more involved than he is um but man even in I mean he’s only played 30 minutes once this year but he’s been in double figures six of their eight games he kind of just comes in and launches from three I really like what they’ve settled in I really like Joshua Jefferson too he was one of my favorite like under the radar portal pickups because uh great rebounder consistent offensive player guy that you can get some passing out of I just think he’s a perfect fit with the guys around him this Iowa State team like they were great last year don’t forget they won the big big 12 tournament blew out Houston in the process and I think we kind of just thought like oh they’re the same team again this upcoming year I think they’re better I really do think they’re better and I don’t think anyone’s talking about it yet because they haven’t really gotten anybody’s attention and maybe that first half against Auburn who everyone thinks is the best team in the country where Iowa state was beating him by 20 the whole time maybe that should have gotten people’s attention and they didn’t seal the deal if they had sealed the deal and won the second half they would have won the Maui Invitational in my opinion and we’d be talking about this team completely differently than we are as you hash all this out does Iowa state have a jersey problem are we think the color schemes holding them back yes dude there’s something about it where it like when I see and it’s crazy cuz I remember you know like the The Glory Days of Hilton Magic um when they had oh my gosh who’s the assist to turnover ratio guy Monte Morris yeah greaty when they had you know like uh electric offenses that really characterized this Iowa State program during our formative years when we were in college and yet something’s flipped since o has been there when I see this color scheme when I see these jerseys there’s like there’s like a mental maybe it’s cuz it’s Iowa State and it’s not a historically good program like before the the Hilton magic days uh um to where there’s there’s a mental block that like can’t quite get there with like how just how Elite this team is but you watch these guys play and you know you know the defense is always going to be there under ODS and they just like we’re we’re what less than a week removed from them borderline torching uh a Marquette defense that was Ved like dropping 80 over 80 points on a Marquette team that everybody was coming into that contest talking about you know how good this team’s defense was because of their length because of how they create chaos even with like the lack of a true rim protector I mean IA I thought like Kon Gilbert just dissected that defense seamlessly and I mean you’re getting production out of him Jefferson even had a double double that game he’s more than just a defensive dude who can who can pass a little bit or just score on dump offs um Deshawn Jackson Another front Court guy you mentioned like is very much has power conference size despite him being an up transfer and he gives them another another element of physicality in the paint like they’re just a really well-rounded roster and we might be calling them the best team in the country like in the next month as Big 12 Play big as Big 12 play starts yeah very good team we’ll see where it goes Iowa um I saw him in person last week against Michigan as you mentioned they ended up having a chance to steal the game they were down 20 to4 immediately from the tip it was a class CL Iowa game like to me you know what classic Iowa games are at this point like much of the game you’re going to feel like they’re not the better team but because they can catch fire at any minute all of a sudden they’re in it they will throw junk Zone defenses at you they will force turnovers um I do think in general this year’s defense is a little better than a normal Iowa defense largely because I think Owen Freeman is a really good Defender I think offensively this year’s offense is a lot worse than a normal Iowa offense largely because I think Payton sford is not a first option what’s ever on a good basketball team he’s been really iffy this year he ended up four for 10 from three against Michigan but he started like 0 for five or something just taking really really tough Fade Away twos um he’s shooting 31% from three on the season I feel like when I think about this game the only formula I see for Iowa put in the upset includes a huge helping of pton sford just going lights out and kind of regressing to the mean with his three-point shot do you agree with me on that and How likely do you think that is at home here yeah I’m with you um did I say this game was in ases I apologize that’s on me I got a on that it’s in it’s in Iowa City that’s uh before people come in the comments make sure you watch the whole video I’m I’m sorry about that I I botch that yeah that to me would be the the formula and you get a big Owen Freeman game as well basically I think you need you probably need Samford and Freeman combining for what 40 plus to have a shot in this one that being said like weird weird stuff happens in this game there have been Iowa State blew them out last year maybe that should have been predictable Iowa W Iowa blew Iowa State out the year before like maybe this is just alternating home and away like the maybe the home team just always blows out the other one which would which makes me like a little bit hesitant to say like oh the only way Iowa wins this game as if Samford and Freeman are just on another level yeah iow was actually won for the last six here which is weird when you think about like this is sort of the otzelberger era um now I has also been good the Murray Twins and Luca Garza were involved in those games so maybe not the most surprising but maybe the important thing four straight games in Iowa City have gone Iowa’s W even the the good Iowa State teams have not won this game in Iowa City so with that let’s get to a prediction uh we are recording Riley what are you taking I was fully prepared to come on the show and say Iowa State’s winning by 20 I talked about Iowa’s defense being iffy you say they’re better than normal I’ll take your word for it the big the big 10 expert I’m still thinking of like just watching Danny wolf and them boys carve them up and thinking what kashon Gilbert’s going to do uh yeah to the Iowa defense as we talk it out and look at the history though sometimes you just got to rock with with the Vibes around it and if if history is telling us one thing I think Iowa gets a surprising win here um I’m leaning with the home team I think it’s going to be I don’t think they’ll blow him out I think Iowa state is way too good for that like the logic in my mind wants to say Iowa State just cuts the water off on this offense and makes it impossible for them to score and they turn them over as well but I this game is weird this rivalry is unpredictable and I think that Iowa gets the little home they get the home court uh boost and they get the job done I don’t hate the prediction at all weird [ __ ] happens in college basketball this absolutely has the potential to be a weird [ __ ] game with that said I think this is the worst version of Iowa in a really long time I think uh this is the best version of Iowa State ever so I am going to take Iowa State to win by double figures here pull away late um only thing I would say this could be Fran like there there’s some smoke feelings I don’t know Iowa fans might yell at me I have a gut feel this might be Fran last year I said this in a different video uh John belon was at the Michigan Iowa game that I was at this weekend there was a lengthy emotional exchange between John beine and Fran mcaffry before that game it just it rre of like this is the last time you’re GNA see me and I don’t know if that’s true or not if this is Fran’s last go at this rivalry that’s an interesting emotional note to mark it down but uh in my opinion Iowa State’s the
