it is Monday November 25th 2024 this is another offseason edition of baseball today that is my man PLO I am Chris Rose producer Dan along for the ride as well as we have safely arrived at Thanksgiving week you’re not traveling are you I am not C Rosie I will be hosting my family at our spot here my brother will come up my mom Olivia’s mom Olivia’s dad uh my sister all the all the family will be here all the kids tooo so I’m I’m very excited I I love we were talking prior to this starting this episode how much we enjoy this week it’s kind of such a it’s a short week it’s a chill week the day after Thanksgiving might be my favorite day of the year because like literally nothing is happening um what are you doing yeah we’re gonna have uh Michelle’s family over uh you know both boys are here which is great one of them reached out to you you were both at the Rams game on Sunday night you know but he said that you big timed him that you wouldn’t come out of the STA sweet you didn’t want to hobnob with the rest of the steerage that’s not it’s not how the conversation went but I’ll let Brady have that kidding he didn’t say that at all he was just happy to have gotten a response from you because you know he he admires you he ADM he want he actually of course I’ll respond to him he said I want to go over and see ploop I said maybe that’s during a Christmas Day V you know you you’re three or four weeks home from college instead of just you know seven to 10 days let him do his little thing and then let me influence him a little bit come on oh boy oh boy you know that should be our big question we’ve been throwing a question down here on the graphic throughout the show maybe this week’s question or today’s episode question should be should I let plof influence my children more that they are now young adults you can leave that one in the in the responses if you want all right let’s get to it hey hey we have a free agent signing it’s why I’m wearing an angel’s hat congratulations to them they pick up left-handed pitcher you say Kikuchi for the next years and 63 million so let’s start with this are you surprised he ended up getting that amount of dough guy’s 33 years old no I I I don’t think that’s like an outrageous deal for him to get the way he ended last season some of the peripherals you know that’s kind of what teams are looking at now hey what does this guy do well and can we recreate that here he had a great end of the season last year with the Astros and I just think that’s what like middle of the rotation guys are going to get anywhere from 17 to 21 uh million dollars so I I wasn’t surprised a threeyear $63 million deal I think anybody could have done this and the Angels were smart just to say hey let’s let’s try to get a deal done as soon as possible I mean I like this move for them yeah I mean here’s what you’re paying for um even though it feels like starting pitching particularly down the stretch hell we saw what the Detroit Tigers did the last two months of the regular season it was like they had TK scoel casy M uh you know and that felt like pretty much it uh as far as starting pitchers and we’ll juggle the bullpen and figure out the rest if you have a guy that can compete every five days and that is one thing that Kikuchi has been is healthy and he will go out there and he’ll take the ball and he’ll make his 30 starts you’re still going to pay for 160 to 170 Innings they might not all be beautiful they might not all be fantastic but they are Innings you have to get through a certain number every season because we play 162 games and I know it sounds ridiculous that that’s worth $21 million but that’s exactly what it’s worth yeah 100% that’s it’s he’s gonna end up making we’re talking about this too about $140 million in his career after this is done and he’s been that he’s been a middle of the rotation guy but because he’s able to take the ball I mean that’s just what this sport gives you if you’re able to do that so hey guys this is what I tell people now if you’re a pitcher like yes stay healthy number one that’s the probably the hardest thing to do stay healthy and then just do one thing really good just like do one thing really good the P teams can be like see he does that and then if we open him up this way it’s let the teams dream on you but you have to stay healthy uh so big picture here with the angels they have been the most um frequent visitor of the transaction wire uh started with a trade for Jorge Solair where they gave up Griffin canning uh they signed Kyle Hendrick to a one-year deal Travis stno got a two-year deal Kevin Newman got a deal as well if you add it all up in terms of the amount of payroll they’ve added it’s about 100 million or so so in your opinion do you think that the angels are building something here or are they just wasting good money this offseason well look I I don’t want to liken this to the royals off season last year that’s what it kind of reminds me of we all kind of were like what are the Royals doing and then all of a sudden they flip the script now the Angels don’t have Bobby Wht Jr on their team we don’t think maybe Logan Oh hoppy can put together a crazy fun season but he’s not gonna be Bobby Wood Jr um but I I just I I like this for the Angels I don’t think it has anything to do with them wasting money I don’t think it there’s just so many things that that being competitive can do for your squad this is a team that hasn’t been competitive uh as of late I was talking to Jake a little bit about this on talking baseball where it’s like if you’re on a team and you know you’re just G to be bad and there’s no improvement in the offseason it is such a waste of a year for everyone not just fans but you go to the park and you’re you just you don’t feel compelled to to get better the winning mentality isn’t there that culture that you’re trying to build isn’t there so making moves like this getting guys to you know stabilize a rotation you know bringing in Travis darno from a winning organization so L are the same thing like bringing these guys in I think gives a little bit of Hope to the roster but also it just signals like hey guys we’re not going to lay down like let’s go and try to be competitive let’s go do some things and that’s just a complete even if you’re not sitting there saying hey we’re the favorites in the American League it doesn’t have to be that big it’s just about being competitive and not wasting these freaking Seasons rebuilding is not the same as it was before Chris you can’t just lose the most amount of games and have the number one overall pick the lottery just changed that so like it’s I applaud the angels for going out in making these moves there’s it’s there’s just a lot of options they have with these players now too you know like if Kikuchi goes out and has a awesome year like what’s to say they don’t flip him for somebody like that’s a very attractive deal I think you know especially if a guy is eating Innings and pitching well so there’s there’s a lot of options I love it I’m happy for them yeah I don’t know if they’re building something legit but I’m happy they’re taking swings I will applaud any organization that’s doing that I’m not going to sit here and go oh well you say Kikuchi is he really worth $21 million a year like wouldn’t you have had wouldn’t you rather have gotten Southern California Native Max freed and just paid 200 million I don’t know if I would have I don’t know if I want to tie myself up into a seven-year deal worth 200 million for a guy who is a obviously a better player than you say Kikuchi but I don’t know if we’re going to be good yeah you know for the foreseeable future so you got to take a few swings so good for them they’re trying does they’re coming off the worst season in the history of the franchise 99 losses the worst season ever so they are trying to incrementally get better and to make them watchable let’s take some baby steps here exactly let’s try and keep Mike Trout healthy let’s try and have him play 130 games this year which will excite the fans again hopefully some of those young guys that are there are taking the next step and then the rest of these veterans are doing their job don’t be anything more than what we’re paying you to be the Royals were 56 and 106 2023 they made some moves they had one guy take a massive step forward and all of a sudden we’re talking about wow the Royals are they’re here to stay yeah I do think that the difference was is that they hit so much on their pitching and Michael Waka had had a really good year the season before Seth Lugo had had a really good season the year before Co Reagan came over in that trade from Texas and he lit the world on fire so they kind of I mean it was a rotation that just seemingly came together it was the perfect storm in a good way for them yes so I I I know I’m not I’m not saying this is going to turn the Angels into a playoff team I’m just saying like this is what H there’s an example of what happens when you try a little bit you go out and put people on your roster right exactly try so for us two two thumbs up yeah yeah absolutely okay I like that speak the cansas City Royals that trade that was reported last week came to fruition uh Royals and reds Brady singer to Cincinnati for Jonathan India and Joey weamer forgot about him the Reds had him you know it sounds like a win-win and we made that argument last week but at first blush who does this deal actually make more sense for in your opinion I think it makes more sense for the Royals um but I I I do like both sides of this of this trade and and for I think for the Reds to get Brady singer for Jonathan India and Joey weamer I think is is a win because everyone knew that they were shopping this guy right like they knew like position players were back Matt mcan’s going to play uh second base and you got all these guys you know that are there that you signed that are coming back from ped like there was an influx of position players they knew they needed to get rid of Jonathan or at least at the very least start moving him around the diamond um so for them to be able to bring in Brady singer I think is a is a win for the Reds but as far as like what team gets better for 2025 I think I’d take the Reds just because of the ability to take what was a massive weakness which was a lead out spot for the Royals and plug in a guy that’s can seemingly fix it just like that I think is huge for them put in a guy with a 360 on base percentage you know in front of Bobby Whit Jr instead of you know collectively I think they had a 270 on base percentage last year from the leadoff spot that’s a huge difference so one off just looking at it for next year I I I think I like the Royal side better but again we mentioned it this is a this is a deal that’s going to help help both teams Big Time despite the fact that I hate giving away what is still controllable youngish starting pitching um I think that this is this makes more sense for the Kansas City Royals for part of the reason you said the onbase percentage actually as a team uh among playoff teams only the Tigers had a worse on base percentage than the Royals we have talked about the difference that he can make in front of Bobby wit Jr uh Wimer is kind of like a lottery ticket love that for them yeah athletic and my god do they have vacancies in the Outfield to play with yeah so I think let him go run around that big old track out there I’m in exactly uh as far as singer Keith Law wrote a really interesting breakdown on him in the athletic and whether or not this is the right landing spot for him because his splits are so severe yeah and the amount of left-handed bats that he could face in that division where he goes from a spacious Kaufman Stadium to a band box in Cincinnati which which I believe might give up the highest home run rate in baseball and certainly worse against left-handed batters and that is something that even though he has been a ground ball pitcher throughout his career he is susceptible to left-handers taking him deep and that is something that would scare you if you want to dig into those sort of numbers and look at the negative side of things the good news is is that he’s needed because he will be a guy out there we talked about you say Kikuchi throwing every five days the Brady singer is going to be relied on to do that in a rotation where it’s been hit and miss healthwise for most of these guys what do we hear oh they’re all they’re all good they’re all studs well you got to be out there and you got to take the baseball and I think Brady singer is going to help in that department the one area where I think maybe the reds are not focusing enough on dealing Jonathan India is that Terry Frank Kona comes in here and you think that he’s going to change everything just based on who he is one thing Tito does is identify guys that he can win over in the clubhouse immediately and then he those guys are an extension of him and I think Jonathan India could have easily been that guy right off the bat I could have seen him and Tito meshing together beautifully and I’m not saying that there isn’t anybody in that clubhouse that can adopt that role right now but I think they’ve got to find somebody and I think they had a guy in their in their grasp and instead they just looked at it strictly as a number deal yeah yeah I just think there was they dealt from a position of strength actually both of these teams dealt from a position of strength and you know they address weaknesses I think that’s when trades are kind of kind of beautiful Chris yeah ited but this is I I love this trade I do too because it can feel like a win-win and I always hate it like um when there’s a trade made and the guy you get is not as good as you thought but the guy you traded away was even worse it makes you feel better as a fan and I don’t quite understand that all the time I mean I understand it if it’s a you know a direct competitor but like the Reds and Royals they don’t have anything to do with each other so no and look I I think Brady singer’s numbers are going to be worse next year just because he’s going to more hitter friendly ballpark probably the first or second best places to hit in all of baseball you know you you’ll have some Advanced stats that take that into consideration but the overall regular statistics are probably going to get a little worse so if you’re a Royals fan maybe you you’ll look at that and say okay see maybe all right we got more show coming your way but first Trevor plof with this word yes are you getting some holiday shopping done this weekend how about you pick up some touchdowns because they’re on sale at the DraftKings sports book DraftKings has doorbuster profit boost and bet one get one promotions on all types of touchdown bets and get Sportsbook app and use code baseball today that’s all one word uh to opt in that is promo code baseball today and it’s only at the DraftKings sports book The Crown is yours all right we continue on here on baseball today uh several Reports say the Boston Red Sox are kicking around the idea of moving Raphael Des across the diamond from third to first base which would open up a spot and possibly mean trading for Nolan Arenado interest on a scale of one to 10 on that rumor is this okay for aerona going to Boston or just rumor that de’s moving I would take the whole thing into I am absolutely Ely a 10 of 10 interested in this move because it’s it’s there’s so much going on first the 81 and 81 Boston Red Sox are rumored to be one of the teams that’s gonna be the most aggressive everything yeah like they’re they’re supposed to be aggressive uh this off season so to me that means yes being in on Snell being in on Cordon Burns or Max freed you know one of those big dogs I I think they are going to be in on them but if you move RAF Des to first base and all of a sudden you got Tristan cus as a freaking trade piece that is that changes the landscape of the game because of the package that he would get if he was to be I think he has one more year of league minimum and then three years of arbitration so cost controlled like that would what for what he’s done and what you can dream upon like he would demand a massive uh package in return so I’m very interested in this yeah aado what’s massive to you I think it could be the start to getting a a crochet or Jake and I talked about what what would Seattle give up to get this guy like I think bringing over a massive a big starting pitcher maybe some prospects as well like this is a guy that’s been he’s done it he’s proved that he can do it at the big league level and he’s cost controlled for four years interesting I think I think he could 100% isn’t the start of a Garrett crochet to the Red Sox to how you think you don’t think so I guess when you put it with the cost control yeah that’s part of it let me see here so he’s 24 I believe yeah he’s he’ll turn 25 in January and he has played a whopping 222 games in the big leagues now he does have an 830 career Ops and last year he played 63 games because of that injury but when he came back and he went on that ridiculous run you could easily see him being a 30 home run guy so yeah I yes I suppose so but once again we don’t Value First basemen uh the way we we value guys that can bang the ball around the park which this guy can do okay then Aeron a Boston intrigues me but also I’m like well if you’re gonna be going all in and trying to write the ship here there’s a bunch of guys available man Willie Damas move him to Third Base Alex bregman bring him into Boston like there’s some there’s some big names there that you can go and get so like this this has the ability to be a huge move for the game of baseball if they actually say hey Des you’re gonna go to first base it could start a lot a huge cycle of things to happen across like I said the entire baseball landscape Chris well so you got to start with this de’s agent I don’t think Des has come out and said anything but his agent did he said no our dude’s a third baseman and he’s going to work hard on improving well he has to work really hard he had negative 9 defensive runs saved last year and metrically if you dive deeper into some of the metrics he’s arguably the word worst defensive everyday third baseman out there so they I think they have to make this move it’s not a move that well maybe they should kick around they really need to make this move and then I would agree with moving CES um or why not just move okay here’s the thing if you want to keep CES why not move de said DH I don’t think they’re gonna do that I think that’s tricky I think you’re taking you’re taking a guy in well I think you you tell me here not everybody can DH isn’t that correct no okay so you’re talking about pulling a guy who’s in his mid 20s off of the field you’re already hearing reluctance out of his Camp just moving across the diamond now you’re just taking him off the field altogether I don’t know if that would you already gave him the massive deal guess what Des has got to do what you said yes bottom line dude okay and look I think if anyone can sell the DH position to somebody it’s the Bost in redox who you know arguably you know one of their top three most popular players ever was a DH well so that would be part of the deals that if I were the Red Sox I would have Big Poppy call him I don’t know what their relationship is I don’t know how tight they are but when you’re Big Poppy and you want to call player the player is going to answer the phone and talk to you of course they have a relationship yeah but still hearing that from one of the great players and wanting to do that in your mid 20s as you know that is two totally different things I don’t know if ego already got the bag though that’s the only thing I think a lot of guys think like hey if I move off like am I is my is my worth down hey your worth is set in stone player that that’s guaranteed so let’s look at it from the other side of things will the city of Boston and you know how much they love their Red Sox and how much they talk about them do you think that the city would have a problem with a $300 million DH do you I mean there’s no way that anybody that’s watched the Red Sox and understands what’s going on here is like yeah this guy was goingon to play Third Base until 2033 like that that was never in the cards Chris like the move was gonna come eventually but now in his mid 20s I just think if you’re the Red Sox front office and you’re Craig breslo you’re thinking about well what makes most sense for our roster now do you want to be 81 81 or do you want to go try to improve and like sometimes you got to make a hard decision I don’t think this one’s that crazy again if you’re if you’re rafield Dev and your grade now average defensively or slightly above average defensively like yeah you have a leg to stand on and say yeah hey man I’m working let me let me get better at this and he’s gotten better but you know there’s information to say you’re hurting our team if you’re at third base um I will answer the question it’s a 10 plus for me uh the aado thing he’s got three years 74 mil left on his deal you knock that down to 64 mil because the Rockies are picking up $10 million over the next two seasons uh we’ve talked about him in the off season that a lot of his peripheral numbers are not good they are trending down in fact they were the worst of his career last season I’m not so sure that that’s the bat I want over there when I could pay a lot more money and get adamus or get a bregman a right-handed power stick that they need over there I just don’t think that arado is the answer um so that that part would scare me I think a little bit if we go that direction but I don’t know I could be wrong I think the rest of this is fascinating and by the way Boston you damn well better do something because you can’t throw all these rumors out there about Max freed and Blake Snell and sitting down with Juan stto and having a good meeting and then and Alex bregman and do nothing you can’t if you do that if you tantalize your fan base and then come back with a big Bagel in the additions column woo good luck good luck all right let’s move on bunch of decent names were non tendered on Friday which one would you take a flyer on I think the most obvious answers would be um like some of the relievers like there are guys out there that are interesting Romano Hobie Milner all these guys you could you could make a decent Bullpen out of the guys that gotten on tendered it’s really yeah it’s really like a a numbers game and how much are you worth how much you g to make all these things so I’m gonna go a different route and I’m gonna go with our guy uh Brendan Rogers with Colorado Rockies you know the guy’s had like some decent Seasons we know he wa he won the gold glove yes he did win the Gold Glove the offense isn’t the offense isn’t crazy bad it’s right below League average and you know what like he’s still in his prime 28 years old so you got a guy that can can play you can try to make some adjustments with the bat I think he’s a good at the very least Chris a good depth piece to have on your roster uh with the with the chance that you you know get him settled somewhere get him feeling comfortable at the plate where you can have an above average player for basically for free okay yeah he’s trended down I think a lot of people are are somewhat down on him uh but yeah you buy low and you aim high for me Austin Hayes he was a guy that was traded at the deadline from Baltimore to Philadelphia for S Anthony Dominguez decent arm did some nice thing with the Orioles and Hayes it was an unmitigated disaster of what happened in Philadelphia he played a whopping 22 games he had a hamstring injury he had an illness as well he never got going there uh I think he is a fascinating platoon player I’m not going to call him this year’s version of Tyler O’Neal because I don’t think he’s got that sort of pop but but I think that he can be a guy that hammers left-handed pitching he did it a year ago an Ops of 941 against left-handers he’s just a season remove from being an Allstar as well and in fact I’m gonna go put him on a team for you right now Atlanta Braves okay go get him I think that you know I don’t know when aunia is coming back we know he’s not going to be there at the beginning of the year so you’re going to need somebody and then once he comes back it’ll be aunia and it’ll be Michael Harris and then you could split Kellick and Austin Hayes is it perfect I don’t think it’s perfect but I think you put those two guys together against righty and lefties we’re on to something can see the Kansas City Royals you know putting their hat in the ring for that as well seems like a Royals move it does now I think I still think we’re at the point of Austin Hayes’s baseball life where you have to be careful against right-handed pitching he did have three straight years where he had over 500 plate appearances and he was a two and a half to three War player if sign me up if that’s what you’re getting but the splits were so drastic a season ago that I wonder if that’s more of the player he is than yester year but still I’d give it a shot I’d kick the tires as we like to say around here all right you know what we all need a little bit more of to get off our ass with B flavors and a refreshing Citrus kick Mountain Dew is going to get you off your ass and have you feeling like you’re on an actual Mountain a mountain where the weather is always perfect your friends are ready to hang in a day of Epic Proportions awaits Take My Man Trevor plof out there this guy loves to combine competition and fun he’ll do anything he’ll have a longest drive contest he’ll go out and shoot hoops three-point shooting contest a putting contest you could play pickle paaul you could play Blitz ball ball you could play Frisbee golf you could play anything doesn’t matter what it is just do something why because the mountain is calling and you should answer so grab your friends grab an Ice Cold Mountain Dew wherever refreshing beverages are sold and do the do all right finally before we get out of here former Giants architect Farhan zi gave his first full length interview following his firing by the San Francisco Giants he told Shaya Rubin in the San Francisco Chronicle this year was his most disappointing of the six that he led the Giants by far there was also a lot of discussion on zi’s influence over the everyday lineup out there now Giants Legend Will Clark blasted on a podcast that Bob Melvin wanted to go and have these guys in the lineup and Farhan and the rest of his cronies up there in the front office were like no no no no you have to do this you have to do that and Zi said listen it wasn’t that bad Melvin said there was always healthy discussion but he wouldn’t throw zi under the bus do you think we just have to accept this as part of the everyday baseball culture or do the saber matrician in the front office need to take a little bit more of a step back these days it’s just the way of the world man that’s that’s the way the game’s going to continue to go managers get hired and understand this this is part of it do I agree with it I I don’t I don’t to be honest with you I think it should be the manager’s job to you know put people where he wants in the lineup now that means doesn’t have to mean the guy’s doing it blind just by feel like that’s not what I’m talking about like educate your manager on what you’re thinking and what numbers you like to look out and then let him make the lineup because he’s in the trenches with the guys unless you know your GM or whoever is running this you know your your front office unless they’re in the trenches with guys like you don’t know how they’re feeling on a on a on a given day you don’t know what their mentality is like like you know how do you feel against this pitcher yeah you know against lefties usually you struggle but I see this guy well like you’re not going to get that information like is there past stats sure but like what has he done you know how does he look you know in his at bats what’s his mentality when he comes back into the Dugout after getting out or getting a knock there’s all these little subtle things uh that a manager would know because he’s in he’s in the trenches with these guys and I think really helps you know put a lineup out there like you you want to have guys feeling confident and I don’t think the front office knows enough about that the day in and day out of guys life so I I I do think that there should be more of like an emphasis on teaching managers what you’re looking for and how you want to construct the lineups and then kind of like let him do it because he’s understanding these intangibles that are going in like we need to understand that baseball is one of those Sports where yeah like some of that stuff matters whether you can quantify it or not like how you’re feeling when you show up to the ballpark You Know What’s happen happening in your your love life or you know your kid has has been sick for the last three days and you haven’t gotten sleep like there’s all these things that matter managers know that front office doesn’t so I I’d like it to go that way if you’re asking me if it’s going to it’s not yeah I don’t I mean we’re never going to pull back from it and I don’t think it’s healthy to pull back from it I think it is I think it is good to have collaborative Minds together you smart baseball it’s not collaborative though because both El said the same thing to me when he said I want to put you in the lineup but the guy you know I want to hit you here but the guys upstairs if I did that I’d get a phone call from them and they would be mad like well have the phone call then it’s not collaborative so it’s too heavy not that I’ve seen you think it’s too heavy it’s swayed the pendulum is swung way too far yes I do but you wouldn’t be against the discussions that are being had by virtually every team no you know and and Roco baldelli I know he sat down and took a long time to write his lineups I think did have some Grace to to do that but also he thinks like a front office guys and they’re very very close I think they were very collaborative with letting Rocco kind of do his thing you know so maybe I do take it back a little bit it depends on the organization ear earlier in the show we talked about Terry Frank cona who obviously came out of retirement and is now joining the Cincinnati Reds I would be curious what that uh what that talk was like between the front office and Frank Kona I mean I don’t think he was coming back to have his lineup card filled out by those guys up there I think the Guardians and or you know that organization is pretty heavily analytical as well like he’s probably well they are but they also had a great working relationship like I think that was one of one now he’s going to a place as far as I know that he doesn’t have those sort of relationships right there’s not that trust because Frank Con in between jobs um in between managerial jobs in Philadelphia in Boston he actually worked with Cleveland’s front office so he knew those guys already yeah it felt a little bit like home when he then returned there in 2013 to manage the club you know here in Cincinnati I imagine that that’s part of it Terry Frank Kona is in his mid-60s and his future Hall of Famer I don’t think he wants to have guys coming down and filling out his lineup card I think he’ll listen I think he’ll take that information and utilize it but he might be one of the only guys that gets to have that discussion well I think that’s I I’m curious about it all yeah I really am so we’ll see yeah it’s here to stay it’s not going anywhere I do wonder if the front office has the self-awareness to pull back when need be or yeah they they have to like there is there collaborative is a great word Chris you got to be able to to work both sides there again unless you’re a guy that’s front office that’s in the trenches that’s talking to guys day and day which basically never happens like you don’t you’re going to miss some of the smaller details and you got to be detail oriented in this game all right we are back at it again we’re going to do a Wednesday edition of baseball today obviously because we got the holiday on Thursday and then PLO is going to be doing so much shopping on Friday he’s not GNA have time for you or me so that’s the way it is uh for our one-of aind producer Dan Rook the Uber talented shopaholic Trevor ploof I am Chris Rose we will see you Wednesday here on baseball today
