a reminder for you of the breaking news this morning Manchester United have confirmed Dan Ashworth is leaving his role as sporting director by Mutual consent good morning welcome back to Super Sunday match day on a day of more upheaval at Old Trafford the Ashworth story was first reported in the athletic and we can speak to their Manchester United correspondent and friend of the show Lori wh we live now good to see you as always Lori just talk us through your understanding of this huge story then yes uh it was a story that you know we sort of got a little bit of wind of yesterday and we decided to make some inquiries and ultimately the news is that yeah Dan ashwith is leaving Manchester United the club have now confirmed that in a statement um it’s a very sudden departure I think a lot of people are very shocked within the industry even at the football club um but it’s clearly something that has been decided upon because it wasn’t working out between him and and S Jim Ratcliffe and the different Executives at the club Lori it’s Sam W here how you doing hey Sam you okay Lori I I just wonder you said you kind of got wind of it yesterday when do you think the decision was made and what do you think have you any idea what the Clincher might have been yeah I’m not sure exactly about the decision I mean obviously we know that the uh communication happened um with Omar barard after the game against n and Forest so Dan was there in the director’s box uh and then the call was made after that so obviously it’s been you know reported as a mutual agreement um it feels like um you know Sim Ratcliffe clearly has been pivotal to this decision though um I don’t know exactly we’re trying to figure out exactly what’s gone on to bring it to this point because it must take quite a lot for something like this to happen given they waited so long for him and there was such positive uh statements about his arrival you know Jim rackliff spoke very glowingly of him so uh I guess the vibe we’re getting at the moment is that it’s just not worked out not the right fit but I guess there’s always more to the story once you start asking the questions Lori Darren here um you’ve done superbly well to get this story yourself and David uh and the team at the athletic um just talk us through how much of a blow how shocked you were you know when when as journalists we get a story we realize straight away the magnitude of that story so just talk us through yesterday afternoon how it unfolded for you and what you thought of it as well soon as you heard it yeah I’ve got to Obviously good props to Adam Crafton as well David on as you’ve said there Darren yeah incredible journalist so uh yeah we’re a good team over at the athletic so hopefully um that’s reflecting the work that we do um yeah I I was shocked I mean you know you always sort of hear little nuggets of information as things go along you know um I mean you look at Ruben Amarin being appointed as head coach of Manchester United and um you know it was Omar barer over in Lisbon doing that deal with sporting in terms of the release Clause um so you know you ask questions around that okay how how involved was Dan asworth in that um as a sporting director you’d think that they would be the prime um person leading uh head coach search um there wasn’t any quotes from him on Ruben amarin’s appointment whereas they had been on ericon ha’s um contract extension and also all the signings that United made in the summer so I don’t know that that struck me as peculiar at the time um but yeah to actually then come to a point where five months into the job you know they waited five months to get him from Newcastle when he was on garding leave it’s a real shocker yeah I just was rereading the club statement Lori 41 words um it’s not exactly a glowing statement is it it’s it smacks of you know this is like say we might find up out a lot more on this story yeah I think it probably speaks to you know sjim Ratcliffe has a very clear way that he wants things to happen you know he’s a man in a hurry by what we’re told you know he’s got Manchester United as his club now and you know he wants a new state he wants them to be challenged by titles um you know he he is involved and there’s an interesting um interview with him in United We Stand a fan Zine um that is outside or Trafford that sold you know different games and it’s been going for a long time he did an interview with this united we we sand fan Zine where you know he spoke about you know wanting to get things moving quickly and you wonder okay if he’s seen something that isn’t working with Dan Ashworth is that when he’s made it a call to to make a change and now we don’t know what Dan ashworth’s sort of viewpoint on all this is maybe you know the mutual agreement at some stage maybe he accepts that therefore it’s not working and okay okay I will part but it does feel like you know this is something that’s come from uh the very top of the club yeah I mean he’s he’s previously described Ashworth as a 10 out of 10 in terms of sporting director so it sounds like this is a Ratcliff decision very much so that seems to be the indication like I said I don’t want to say that absolutely outright because the club statement says it’s a mutual parting but equally you know just speaking to people around the club nothing happens of this magnitude without Sim Ratcliffe being you know across it um and I think we’ve seen from you know different situations that he’s been in previously that if it’s not working he he will make those changes and I suppose in one aspect you might say okay well that’s that’s a good way to be because you know you’re kind of being assertive there and if it’s not working then then change it and obviously there’s going to be embarrassment here on all sides um so I guess they’re all thinking well we can ride through this because we think this is the right decision but the big point I think I mean the action has been you know quite astounding really from fans and and people in the industry but I I think one big point to bring from all this is is the money involved because you know um United are in debt massively because the glazers Takeover they are losing money as well as Sam said earlier I think you know maybe five years in a row that they’ve lost money 100 million odd in the latest Financial results um and they’ve obviously had to pay money to uh dismiss Eric and ha which was on you know the inos watch um 10.4 million in the latest accounts they paid money to sporting to get Ruben Amar in from their 11 million Eur and they’ve raising ticket prices you know they they’ve done a kind of unilateral raising of ticket prices for the rest of the season that’s going to you know cost people now if they want to buy a ticket they haven’t got a ticket already 66 pound per game you know under 16 or old age pensioner so no matter who you are that’s going to be the cost and that’s we think going to work out something like one and a half million pounds in raised Revenue that the club are going to get so then to dismiss a guy that you obviously paid compensation to Newcastle for that I don’t know what the exit terms are but there that you feel like there’s going to be money involved I think that’s a where you can ask the big questions yeah just just updating obviously for people who just turned in you’ve obviously broken this story with David onstein about Dan and Adam craon about Dan Ashworth leaving Manchester United you made an illusion there to the ticket prices because people might watch and think well what does it mean to Ordinary People that’s what it means ticket prices are going up we’ve seen fans protesting about that um would it be fair to say it’s not a great look you know for the the club in in terms of trying to repair that relationship with fans how do they go about doing that when what fans might be thinking is that it to your point maybe other things the price of other things might go up you is this going to be even more expensive to them when they see Senior figures at the club leaving Old Trafford yeah I think that’s a very fair and valid point because ultimately football should be for the fans and Sim ratliffe came in with an agenda to you know he said on in his statement to make it a club for the local community you know he’s from failsworth near Alden just up the road from Manchester um you know grew up a United fan um so for him to then raise ticket prices you know Midway through the season you know it shocked a lot of people disappointed angered a lot of people there was protests um outside the ground before the Everton game I imagine that there’ll be more protests because this is the kind of thing that you know you have these uh relationships with fan groups you know the fan Advisory Board United have got there’s the fans forum and there’s more United supporters trust so there’s different ways of communicating having discussions with before doing something like this and so I think that people are looking at they thinking well okay it feels like if sjim ratliffe wants something to happen then it happens at a stroke and you know how how what is the decision-making process there like so he will say I guess that you know he needs to you know raise ticket prices is in um in the interview that he did with Andy miten in United W Andy said that it’s wrong that uh United should be cheaper to go to than Fulham for example well you know there’s there different reasons for that different you know responses to that and I certainly feel like United are in a financial pickle um you know because of you know the glazers ownership and because of bad transfers made recruitment you know that’s that’s where the real cost of United is going out of the club you know bad transfers being made money spent on players that aren’t performing and so then to kind of pass that on to the fans I think people will rightly say that’s not fair just finally Laura and I don’t want to put you on the spot because I know this is a really fresh story for everyone but um does is there any suggestion that Ashworth wasn’t a part then of recruiting Ruben amaram I mean that’s something that we’re going to have to try and find out you know take your point Vicki certainly it feels strange right if youve just hired a new guy and then the sporting director goes you know I’d be interested to know what Ruben amind you know if he knew about this in advance or or kind of what his feelings are Beyond this I mean he’s had to sort deal with quite a lot already in sort of a few weeks of managing Manchester United certainly an Abrupt welcome for him um but yeah it does it’s interesting I mean like I said we we’ve reported previously that um the chief executive Omar barard you know was a driver uh behind appointing Ruben Amarin it’s clearly sjim Ratcliffe and S brailford were involved as well um you’ve got different figures as well you know Jason Wilcox the technical director it’s just really fascinating to feel how all this fits together there there’ve been people before that have said to me that there are too many people with with different voices and and so maybe this is part of the streamlining of the operation but yeah it it does it just leaves a lot of questions right so uh I’ll obviously be spending my day trying find out the answers [Music]
