is Tom on Twitter it ISJ Cameron show appreciate you jumping on here we got so much to discuss in many ways I’m reborn thanks to the uh end of the season man it is so nice not to have another loss hanging over your head looming large week to week you always had the weight of a pending loss that you knew was coming uh a pending defeat in which you were made to look terrible uh again and you knew that was coming every week and now the albatross has been lifted there’s no game to play nothing all you get to do now is sit back relax and watch take it all in and let’s learn together uh what’s going to happen it’s a a mighty rebuild that is necessary looks like it appears to be anyhow well we have one confirmed and another that it looks like it’s headed in that direction not confirmed yet but certainly seems to be according to multiple Outlets headed in that direction um and I’ll get to both here in a second the one we do know is 100% already done has been spoken to is in fact uh Gus malan um and he is the new offensive coordinator I think a lot of you are expecting me uh to be angry by that hire I I I’ll tell you I needed some time I needed some time to digest that decision and honestly I’m all right with it now I’ve said this about whether it’s an OC or a DC or any other coach a head coach included we know that none of these things come with guarantees none of these things there are coaches we all have ton of examples there are coaches that um had a lot of success in one place miserable failure in another something mixed in in between over here you know followed by failure followed by success so we know that each situation is different and that nothing comes with a sure thing written in and we hope certainly that um you know when you when you make an informed decision like that that you’re going to get it right but they don’t always get it right not everybody gets it right and we watch it time and again and and so I I don’t know what’s going to happen in the Gus mes on uh era of offensive play calling at Florida State I know what he wants to do I know what he’s done in the past and I know where he’s succeeded and failed where he has succeeded everywhere he’s ever been is running the football go back and look at any of his success stories at Auburn or Arkansas State or even at UCF the first couple of years over and over and over again the through line with Gus maon is they run the ball they are going to run the ball and guess what else they’re going to do they’re going to run the hell out of the quarterback they’re going to run the quarterback and they’re going to run the ball they are going to do that good we haven’t run the ball successfully in a few years Tom I like the idea of successfully running the football I don’t know what this second and six is that you’re speaking of what is that we don’t see it ever we’re in second and nine second and 11 second and eight it be nice to be in second and six once in a while so we know that we also know that no offense no defense no coordinator no head coach can win without good players we know that if you don’t have good players you’re not going to consistently win games you might have a season here or there you may have a moment in the Sun but to sustain a level of Excellence that you’re trying to reach you got to be able to bring in good football players that fit what you’re trying to do you got to convince kids that play at a high level to come play for you whatever the system and everybody’s got a preference everybody’s got an opinion about a a system uh a player uh everybody’s got an opinion about what you’d like to see run a preference all of them require Talent all of them require that you have jimmies and Joe’s we can run any x’s and o’s with the jimmies and Joe’s but you got to have them and so this will be a success or failure either way based on whether or not they can get some better players in here they got to get more of those and you and I have talked about that for weeks we’ve talked about hey look they may hire a guy whose name excites me they may hire a guy whose name does not it won’t matter if you can’t block it won’t matter if you cannot block and Florida State just played another game on Saturday and which they did not block I was watching a lot of Bren and Mary and stuff as uh we have been the last couple of weeks and looking for takeaways from what UNLV does the hell is this go go thing all about you know it’s about the formation but what I’m watching in these games is that unlv’s offensive line is winning and so therefore the play is successful I don’t think it has to do with two running backs lined up next to each other right rather than the quarterback is in the middle I don’t think it has anything to do with that at all I think it’s that the defensive line is being pushed back by a yard quarterback has more time to make a decision for some of the option stuff that they run they have good perimeter blocking their tight ends block as well it’s amazing how an offense can look good when you have and it’s amazing how smart coaches are when you have good players and we said a lot of things about Adam Fuller the last three years this way that way the other way but he’s a genius when you have Jared verson brayen Fisk up front and I’m sure they’re saying the same thing in Los Angeles about what the Rams defensive coordinator is right now because those guys did the exact same and they’re continuing to do it on a weekly basis at the professional level you get the players in here voila you’re a magician and so we’ll see I I do like the idea though that Gus in many stops in his career has done more with less because whoever comes in here at either coordinator position uh whatever position coaches you have if you have a track record of doing more with less I like you because guess what when you get here even if we have an overhaul in the offseason many of the games we play in 2025 you’re going to have to do more with less that’s just the way it’s going to be next season you know I uh I never wanted Gus maon to be my head coach I I I said that repeatedly on the show um and I always uh wanted to to to bring up the fact that um uh you know I I didn’t think long-term his system was one that would work out and we talked a little bit about as a head coach and and there were a variety of reasons for that but in terms of what he is as a play caller well there’s no getting around and we documented this when the announcement was made that he was hired there’s no getting around that at one time especially in the early 2000s Gus Maan was an incredibly Innovative coach that brought a lot of Concepts to football that now is incorporated into almost almost every offense run around the country and in run in the NFL and he is always been known by those that worked for him and with him uh as a guy that is highly intelligent highly respected as a play designer as a play designer uh he’s gonna run the ball it’s rooted in that if we look big picture Tom it’s not surprising to me that Mike Norvell for lack of a better term would run into the arms of a football fatherly figure and that is Gus Mal on to him they work together going all the way back to Tulsa they’re they’re very familiar with one another in the tree and all of the coaches that we know that are on it right and they’ve all they had very similar ideas and beliefs about offensive football currently Mike norell runs much of what Gus Malon runs now he incorporates some other elements to it that Gus didn’t run as much and most coordinators do add subtract based on changes in the game as they occur new Concepts are brought to the table and all of the sudden everybody’s running Duo all of a sudden everybody’s running you know and you see it and people are I kind of like that I don’t like that as much you know what I’ll replace this with that that seems to be more effective easier to teach easier to execute I can you know I can still run what I want to run but I’ll incorporate these things from other types of offenses or other designs so you know it’s not surprising that he would do that one of the things that I like about that particular uh hire is that Gus malan’s 59 and he has had success and failure he’s now going to join Chip Kelly as one of these guys that’s a head coach of one program who’s decided I’ve had enough I can’t can’t do this anymore I don’t like where college football is going Nick Sav up and retired most people believe largely because of that there have been many other coaches who’ve stated this is in tenable and you’re now I think gonna see more and more of this more and more guys who say if I could just go call plays that’d be cool I just want to go do this and not deal with all the nonsense I just want to be able to run my stuff now right about now at Ohio State they’re not loving old Chip Kelly are they we can get into that later but this is not abnormal for your older coaches who I think want one more shot at it and maybe not the pressure that comes with being the guy that runs the entirety of it all but there’s a maturity that comes with those successes and failures those Seasons under the belt some great some awful and some in between I think Mike could use some of that I think Mike could use some of that sort of shepherding if you will yeah well I mean there’s a couple of things to say to that number one you know if Mike stole some things from and and used it was INSP by his time with Gus Malon and that was his offense and he used some other things that maybe Malon did not use that’s immaterial now Gus came in here to run his offense I don’t think Gus is coming in here to listen to coach Norvell and and his thoughts about what they should do instead of hey gus there’s no chance Gus hang on a minute I know you like to do this at UCF but instead here’s what I want you to do for me no man that language isn’t used when you bring in Gus melon this is the keys are his now just by definition him taking the gig I think brings that to where it’s a closed issue we were wondering openly is Mike being honest sometimes head coaches talk about they’re okay with seating play calling and then they never do sometimes they tell you they have a five-year plan and you’re in year eight nine year 10 of The Five-Year Plan and you never see the play calling handed over to somebody else well Mike Norvell said from the beginning that this is not an ego thing if he thinks it’s in the best interest of the football program for him not call plays he won’t call plays right Gus malan’s arrival Brennan Maran if he was hired that would tell you that the guy that’s coming in is taking over full control of the offense so that’s what you’re getting here it’s a turnkey thing it’s now guses to mend and the question that you got and you you talked about this earlier what do you think of the higher it’s so hard to say because head coach no no thank you offensive coordinator completely different role Within the function of a football program so I’m not I’m not going to allow my thoughts about Gus the head coach to Cloud that this could work at offensive coordinator but I’m going to be honest I’m not inspired by it well we’ll see how we’ll see how this goes it’s just it’s a completely different role My Hope Is that as they fill out the staff on the offensive side of the football that you see a lot of guys who have ties to the southeast in terms of high school relationships and recruiting I think that’s critical that we have to get smarter than we were the first go around with the first half there have to be dudes with more ties so the other side of the ball it is expected is not finalized I want to make this very clear it is not finalized but it is very much expected you can look anywhere you want to look anywhere across the the landscape of coverage uh for college football whether it is war Chan or any other site or any other I I this morning we’ve all seen these reports that it looks like Tony white is going to be hired by FSU is expected to be hired by F isue and I think the one thing I want to put out there about that as somebody who was on the phone early this morning with a lot of sources that were backing up that information that we’re saying yes it does look like Tony white that’s the sniff that I got over the weekend started making some calls a lot of guys confirming that in fact it looks like Tony white is the guy one thing to note on that is that until a play until a coach is signed the sheet of paper or whatever we we have to say is expected so we’re going to say is expected all right now let me just talk on this for a second because if Tony white is the hire he’s a 45-year-old defensive coordinator SL associate head coach at Nebraska there are a lot of things that go with it including rumored will see don’t know this can’t confirm this we’re all just now kind of sitting back waiting to see once FSU confirms these things if in fact they’re true that maybe that he brings his de defensive line coach and the first thing I thought about with that Tom was that first of all I I would like this higher if it happens for for certain and I would like the whole package that we’re hearing that’s rumored out there night and all these different guys right well part of part of what I’d like what I would like about it is if you if you watch Nebraska defense each of the last two years you saw a top 20 defense first of all but you also saw one that was hellbent on for the most part stopping the run there a couple blips on the radar but they totally shut down Ohio State’s Run game Ohio State converted one third down in that game against Nebraska we all remember that Nebraska Ohio State game Nebraska pretty much should have won the game um they just Nebraska’s offense struggled in that game if you go back they totally shut down Colorado uh that was the worst game that Colorado offensively had Hunter didn’t do anything in that game really uh shador Sanders was sacked a ton beat up in that game I remember after that game coming on the air and saying man Shor Sanders is tough like we kind of admired how tough he revealed himself to be uh with as many hits as he took in that game uh Colorado’s offense got styed by Nebraska defense in that game are you okay with a 335 you haven’t been too keen on it well I’ll tell you why I’m okay with the 335 I called Nebraska people I called my guy Sean Callahan who I worked with with Husker online and I wanted to know more about what Tony white brought to Nebraska if in fact we end up hiring him and it becomes official right now it seems like it’s going that way we’re all waiting for the final news so we can just say it’s confirmed but the point would be that he said no he’s very multiple He he’ll have a fourman front when he needs to he’ll sub out uh a defensive back and bring in another line he’ll do all these things when he has to or a linebacker out a defensive lineman and he’ll do those things but he’s talked about how there were games where they watched now listen they got lit up by Indiana it was a 14 to7 game midway through the second quarter looked like it was going to be a hardfought game Nebraska turned the ball over Indiana went down and scored and it looked like Nebraska quit quite frankly and that’s never good you don’t like to see that but you got to watch and be objective about these things I can’t tell you that they shut down everybody they faced they shut down most of the people that they faced point is the larger sample size of Tony White’s defenses whether it was at Syracuse or here I mean at Nebraska or at Arizona State they all improved under his leadership they all got better they all played good against the run very good against the Run they all played physical trigger downhill they were aggressive pressure from all over the place you offens has struggled to figure out where the pressure was coming from so I philosophically love that part of it being malleable being physical stopping the run everything being predicated on that okay no guarantees maybe maybe he comes here and fails I don’t know you we all want assurances after going two and 10 we all want to know that we’re gonna get the best version of Gus males on because we’ve seen the good version of Gus mes on it was really really good we’ve seen the terrible version of Gus melon it’s not good at all I was critical of that version we’ve seen Nebraska on defense these last two years play quite physically play very well both year’s top 20 defenses but they’ve also had some outlier games where you’re like what was that what happened there you’re not g to get 100% guarantee home run both guys no matter what let’s all sing Kumbaya you’re you’re not going to get that we’re we’re gonna have to wait and see we’re gonna see what happens you gotta get players same same thing as offense you got to have players uh as of right now though it looks like um you know looks like Tony white is is expected to be I as far as the other stuff goes uh I just was while we’re on the air I’m sitting here getting messages from people especially those that um yeah especially those that are covering Nebraska they wanted me to come on right now I’m like I’m on the air guys I can’t come on right now but they’re having this discussion at Nebraska that that I will tell you that emboldens me uh I’m excited about the possibility of Tony white but I think we’re all so beaten down and downtrodden as nolles we none of us can exhale until it’s officially signed and they’re announcing him right because we’ve how many times have we had a recruit say yes guaranteed he’s GNA come to Florida State and in the Witching Hour it happened that he flipped right so none of us know anymore this seems about as sure thing as you can get in the business but and the reason I say that is Nebraska’s reporting it as well so you I mean they’re the ones covering the program up there I feel pretty good about that but we’ll wait and see but when I talked to them and by the way we recorded an interview with Sean Kahan today he is with Husker online uh we’ll run it today if we can get confirmation that the hiring has happened we don’t want to run it until we know for sure but if if the hiring happens uh and goes through the way that many are speculating that it is now now uh Tom then we’ll have that he said that the Nebraska fans were pretty concerned pretty pretty worried they they most think very highly you’re not gonna get 100% of people but most think very highly of the job he’s done well he he was also paid handsomely to do it so that’s the other thing here Florida state has never been cheap with assistant coaches U but this would be yet another example of an eight fig buyout being paid likely to all the guys that have exited and will be exiting and longer a part of this staff that’s eight figures on the way out what about on the way in you know Tony white would not be an expensive he would be expensive to bring in very expensive when you have associate head coach next to your name to go along with DC you’re making a lot of money soate head coaches away for them to pay you more that’s correct yeah and depending on what you look depending on where you look is a better way of saying it 1.6 1.9 somewhere in that area is what he was making at NE Nebraska Florida State we already has said have said before will have to overpay Florida state will probably have to overpay for all of these guys when you’re in a bind this is what happens that sort of Leverage is used against you same thing for players I mean you’re desperate and they know it agents certainly know it and so you’re going to be in a situation where if you’re able to get a guy like that who’s as well thought of as he is and as successful as he’s been in the position that he was in at Nebraska if you get him to sign I got to imagine that it’s going to be for over $2 million which is a good sign that the administration the athletic department M norel whoever you want to give credit to understands the depth to which the sorry has permeated this program and the need to bring in a fresh set of eyes on offense on defense Andy I think I to me it looks like they’re just getting started well that’s where the the actions backup the verbiage you know Mike morell’s press conference on Saturday night was as pointed as I think it’s ever been uh in any one of his press conferences he had the uh the darting intense eyes throughout the 20 plus minutes he was speaking after the game was over and he talked about how this would be addressed quickly he said it was going to be immediate Fast Fix and he said so with without the like that PR look that he has from time to time where you could tell that he understands the setting every word’s important and so I’m going to be measured he showed a lot more emotion he was more raw in that setting and uh he said it would be quick and so you know if this thing all goes through and uh it’s all announced here in the near future it was expensive but it was also quick and also it gets you a couple of yeses I mean Malon feels like that’s done even though yeah they haven’t put out the graphic on on the University side yet it’s not nothing to have 24 48 hours before the early signing period it’s not nothing it’s better than the alternative if you can get these things locked down well and what we don’t know and you hear Whispers behind the scenes and speculation and you know you want to go with a lot of these things or get excited and talk about them but you also want to be careful we’re all trying to be careful but one of the things to note is that like you hear all kinds of rumors about players that might be willing to come if in fact ma On’s the higher players that might want to be headed to Tallahassee if in fact Tony White’s the hire and if that defensive line coach comes with him what might he bring because exactly we’re all doing the math right now in our head about this roster and what you have and and you’re talking about all right how does this scheme work how does this work okay do we have the Personnel to run that well look I mean the answer might be uh I’m not real sure I don’t think so or it might be yeah I think we do either way we don’t really know to what extent and how efficient you’ll be able to run anything until you find out a these are finalized deals B are they bringing players with them do they tip the scale in your favor for some recruits that you’re not maybe not even on your radar right now yeah both recruits and transfer portal candidates not just from The rosters that they are currently working for because everybody the moment that you get a coordinator I looked that Saturday when the news was coming down between the time we heard it at Hotel Indigo and then that you know we get sat down for the video I’m looking at their roster I’m looking at their recruiting class yeah you looked at the office it’s three people you can you give me three you know bring three with you that that that’s better if we’re if we’re gonna need a few dozen you know I mean at least give me something close to 10% roster turnover that you can bring with you same thing if uh this thing gets done you look at Nebraska’s roster you look at their recruiting class or maybe some kids that they were in on but they finished in second four perhaps things like that where Tony white or knon were the primary recruiters these are the things that you have to consider and so that’s where it gets fun because you’re grocery shopping again and that’s way better than watching this team’s thirdd down efficiency on offense and defense their Red Zone efficiency and just getting blown out every 60 minutes where they play a team with a pulse yeah and and and listen we are waiting again we are waiting uh for the 100% it is signed he is the guy confirmation before we go with some other things that we have um so we’ll wait patiently and or rather impatiently we’ll all wait we’ll do that uh but I I I gotta say Tom I think that I got excited and and I think the fans will be excited when you start connecting the dots like you were just starting to do a moment ago who’s worked with who what connections do they have in this state oh now I see the vision why it might be happening you know that kind of stuff if it goes through Brian Windor yeah you you yeah you start getting pretty excited actually like oh well that makes more sense oh and him oh okay he’s got a conect I see so there is some of that here where you’ve got the classic you know you the whiteboards behind me and all the arrows and the strings are pointing and every like he worked with him he was in Homestead he worked over here he’s got a connection to the Miami High Schools he’s got you’re like oh okay it makes some sense but it’s just got to get confirmed we just got to wait and see there’s so much to digest today including what was a crazy weekend of college football with bizarre results it started really on Friday and I I want to get into that stuff while also noting that it’s a heavy lean towards for State content today because the season is over we can put that disaster behind us and begin to look ahead to how you fix it we know what it was we no longer have to talk about being in the midst of it’s over what we saw on Saturday night was very predictable Florida State loses to Florida convincingly Florida State continued to shoot itself in the foot over and over again just when they would get something going but when you get news of Gus Malon being hired and then you get news that maybe Tony white is going to be hired and then you get rumors about other players and coaches that may be coming it’s hard to to to kind of think about anything other than that it’s hard to think about anything other than okay well let’s let’s start thinking about the Future Let’s thinking about you know what what this is going to mean for Florida State we debate all during the course of This Disaster whether or not Mike would be the right guy to fix it since he oversaw This Disaster plenty of people fall on one side of that argument some people fall on the other side of that argument certainly you get both sides of it I do the same time you know you’re frustrated because you’re watching your recruiting class fall to pieces and here on Wednesday we’ve got sign you know I mean there’s so much on the horizon but things are happening with the next 72 hours Florida state has got I I’ll be very interested to see when if they are able to finish the deals I mean we’re still waiting has anybody seen Gus miles on in front of a fla State Banner no we haven’t so let’s wait until I I’m curious when do they make the official announcement sooner the better let’s get it let’s get moving you got Signing Day on Wednesday so the sooner the better I think recruits would like to know I’m with you yeah there was one recruiting interview this weekend I forget the player was helping with a little bit on the site yesterday it was a Matt lasair report and he said that you know they should know by Monday or Tuesday on the defensive side of the ball this is where the recruits sometimes can give you uh a window into the coaches yeah right yeah let’s go you would want it let’s go because you would want that guy to take off the polo he’s wearing put on your Polo and then make some phone calls or facetimes with your Polo on that’s that’s the key you change the laundry and you change the job well I’ll invite you Mike noral anybody else that’ like to come on the Jeff Cameron show uh I don’t know been covering the today for the latest news inside Florida State athletics that’s warchant.com now back to Jeff on Real Talk 93.3 busy Monday a lot that happened in h college football obvious viously and no shortage of information conversation centered around Florida States disastrous season coming to an end and what the future might look like like like like look like uh look like with some coaching hires uh one seems to be assuredly done and the other is maybe in the mix of being finalized is what it sounds like um I I I’m like you I want to get with the getting because I want to I want to tell you what I what I think it ends up meaning um as far as really both coaches because what I think and I’m guessing here I’m projecting what I think will happen if those two hires are confirmed what we’ll probably see next and a national championship um no well maybe uh but I do think that there are some names that will be attached like all coaches uh that will be attached to um to their hiring so I’ll give you an example instead of being vague ambiguous herb hand is the offensive line coach you know that at UCF yes with an all-time great name herb hand has a great name he’s been around the block for a long time and he’s done some really good work over the years herand is um a guy that was associated with pin State associated with uh Vanderbilt when he was there with Franklin um but you know he this is a guy who’s been around uh Tulsa okay so we’re starting to put the pieces together here right so there’s Tulsa which also had M on also had norell okay now you go from there vanderville Penn State that’s the Franklin connection he coordinated the Run game at both places then offensive line coach where Auburn during a good run and then Texas and now UCF it would seem to me Gus would probably want to bring herb hand with him we’ll see he was also at one point in the early 2000s herb hand was with West Virginia uh was a tight ends coach and a recruiting coordinator back then in 01 through 06 herb hand’s been around the block he’s produced plenty of NFL Talent including Donovan Smith who I didn’t love but you know nonetheless Super Bowl champion nonetheless um so you know this is a guy that’s worked in the SEC worked in the Big 10 worked to Texas okay so we’ll see if if the if the maon thing is I I guess finalized or do we know that uh if it is then I would guess that we may end up hearing about her pan maybe that’s conjecture I don’t know that just seems to make sense connect the dots trying to figure out if in fact if Tony is the uh if Tony white becomes the DC if he is does he bring somebody with him well a lot of people think that he’ll bring Knighton with him the defensive line coach who a lot of people at Nebraska absolutely adore would we hear that what does that mean well that would mean what it would mean that our beloved defensive line coach is either retiring or taking on a different role again this is all speculative I don’t know for sure that that’s going to happen but that you would start to connect the dots because of the relationships it would affect recruiting it would you also have unlimited coaching capabilities now in a way that you didn’t before um you know because puchas is also the defensive ends coach in addition to special teams coordinator uh you know again just listening to some of the exit interviews from kids that were on campus this weekend Tony Tok car’s name came up in the active not not in the past tense yeah papua’s name came up well look it came up in the past tense didn’t it puchas I don’t think it did maybe I heard it differently okay the point is that you know a coaching staff will keep a prospect um on a need to know basis if they if there are moves that need to be made but sometimes sometimes they’re telling you and they’re giving you a window into their future plans it’s just what makes this difficult to project in terms of what the final staff will look like is now that analysts can coach on game days you don’t have effectively speaking the same cap that you used to have terms of coaches that you can have on the roster so you could have reassignments and not dismissals here for some of the assistants that is still a possibility now as for who gets those titles of defensive line coach and you know linebackers special teams tight ends receivers running backs that to me remains a very fascinating question I just hope when it comes to the guys that can actually hit the road and recruit on the road that you do upgrade there if you keep a lot of the same guys around the building I don’t know if that’s a bad thing but as long as the guys that are allowed to hop on a charter flight or hop in a car and go see somebody in south Georgia or South Florida or anywhere in between I hope that that staff has some names that give us a little bit of juice the way that we’re talking about coordinators I think there’s some juice with the resume of August Malon if you’re just talking about offensive coordination not recruiting there’s some you have some Pizzazz there Tony white certainly you feel juice how about getting a few position coaches in here that you feel the same way about recruiting you say oh man they are connected how great would it be to hear a hire or two and the response be from the former institution from people in the business well that dude’s connected he’ll get you in the room with the four and five star kids he’ll get them on campus that’s what we need next because Talent acquisition is so monumentally important Terence Knighton is a guy uh that’s the defensive line coach for Nebraska uh Sean Callahan who I hope you get to hear from we’ll we’ll see if this all gets finalized said that this is a guy that has been crucial uh in their efforts to to to get better players on the defense uh is a guy that is as affable as they come kids flock to him uh he was there you go yeah kids flocked to him he’s a guy that was you know he’s got NFL experience as well uh so you know what I what I’m beginning to understand and think more and more about is that okay a coach can be perceived a certain way like would we all admit now that Billy Napier is in the midst of changing the perception of who he is at Florida yeah yeah he is right before this season he was Sun Belt Billy on his way out was on the verge on the cusp of being fired after Saturday’s win against Florida State he is viewed as a guy that played one of the toughest schedules in America and lost his starting quarterback and went seven and five those kids play hard for him they seemingly care a lot about him it all changed in the middle of the year he was able to flip it so I’m finding myself and he’s one of many examples but if you incorporate that along with the way the college football is changing I’m sort of of a now I’m of the mindset that I don’t really care oddly who your offensive coordinator is who your defensive coordinator is I mean I care obviously that’s an overstatement but I don’t care as much as I once did because the landscape has changed as to how an operation in college football is run it is completely changed recruiting has completely changed the the the bar with which we judge these program I think are in the midst of changing they’re in a constant state of change and we are going to be to discuss college football programs less centered around the head coach the OC and the DC than ever before and instead we’re going to begin to talk about who is your GM who is the man that everybody answers to that helps change the organizational philosophy towards Talent acquisition towards however you run the operation right we’re talking about this this this is where this is going yeah I think it’s it’s taking I I think that’s going to have to be the head coach is going to have to serve in that position well he stamps everything I agree with that but I will tell you that he doesn’t I don’t know that the head coach has the time to do all the things that are now required to run in the NFL GMS run an organization yeah yeah I agree I I just I think that the head coach is such a powerful job in college football that you’re almost when you get to this level especially you’re paid 10 Mill a year or in excess of it yeah you’re getting to that place where you have a head coach who’s also in charge of player Personnel decisions and 100% when when you look at the day-to-day structure of Mike norvell’s existence as Florida State’s head coach next year versus this and you look Monday through Sunday how it’s all organized I I’ll bet you that calendar looks completely different for his secretary to put together in terms of the meetings he has the topics he discusses the time that he spends I’m just noting that the there is an elevated importance now for that role we never Associated the term GM with college football in any way shape or form we talked about athletic directors that are or are not doing a good job and we talked about head coaches we never discussed a GM we are now going to be discussing GMS on the regular who’s got good ones what happened under their watch you’re G to be hiring GMS from other programs that got it right over like an eight-year period it’s going to start to happen yeah I agree with you in that sense I think it will be in the flowchart of the organization on the level of coordinator in terms of importance I think you know you’re going to need your coordinators you’re going to need a good general manager that you can hand those things off to now unless that general manager position starts to get paid $5 million $6 million 7 million a year maybe at that point the flowchart changes they and they’re operate on on an even playing field but for now I think the natural way to assume that position would be underneath the purview of the head coach of the football pro I do too I’m just saying they’re married they’re they’re absolutely joined at the hip just the way it happens in the NFL because there’s not enough time no NFL coaches get fired all the time because their GMS effed up right right and GMS get fired all the time if the coach is in is infuriated and has a good relationship with the owner he can go to the owner and say hey this guy’s killing us you got to fire his ass but here’s the weird thing is that the owner in this situation is an ath director who doesn’t make nearly as much money as the head coach at least in that setting you’re talking to a billionaire right who actually owns the operation yeah there is no owner there is no owner in this equation we gotta get to the news Jeff K 933 real talk radio War Chad TV oh two are dead following a Thanksgiving Day double homicide the homicides occurred at 151 Hunter Road IND decator County names of the deceased rolling on on a very busy Monday busy busy day in a good way this godforsaken season is now behind us and we did get to Revel in a little shot in Freud over the weekend uh was there anything better than watching Miami lose to Syracuse having invested all of that money ponied Up All In it’s our time we got the guy here we go yeah you’re not even playing for the conference Championship didn’t get there again now we’re the laughing stock we’re the butt of the joke in college football right now it’s not lost on me it’s certainly a fair retort for any of our Rivals to say Get a Grip you guys went two and 10 we did you know we also won the ACC last year you know who didn’t win the ACC this year us you know who else you in fact you’ve never won it never you just had a generational quarterback couldn’t even get to the game couldn’t even get to the game that’s a toughy that’s a toughy hate that for you it was fun to watch oddly it was also fun to watch Ryan da black dyed beard Suffering The Cold against Michigan does anybody look like a bigger doofus than that dude stop doing that what is wrong with you it’s it’s bizarre that nobody goes over to Ryan day and says hey man what are you trying to do well what do you mean that’s not a real color no hair looks like that you what are you trying to be Steven Seagal you look like an ass and you can’t beat Michigan this is really annoying between your beard and our constant losing to Michigan you’re on the way out pal get it together so then that started what was plant the flag gate and then every rivalry in America decided that there was going to be some sort of scuffle at the end of the game because of flag planning this Baker Mayfield day man hey you know what at least at least Julian arela who’s accomplished exactly nothing here as an offensive lineman goes out with a bang both in getting punched in the face because he foolishly decided to uh do the right thing and step up and make sure the flag wasn’t planted but while not wearing a helmet come on my man decisions we God you gotta button it up go watch Ohio State’s number 33 chin trp securely fashioned as he ripped that flag away from number 22 I think it’s safe to say that’s going to be banned right well I’m surprised it’s taken this long for college football to just say that that particular thing is banned it’s the Midfield logo who’s ban it there is no Zar of college football there’s no NCAA that does anything worth a note it’ll be each conference announcing it perhaps on their own time or under one Banner of unified sportsmanship and they’ll put all their logos it’s it’s an easy PR release for all them to get an Applause for it right so there’s no loss here but it’s the Midfield logo the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen is Bradley chub spitting on the logo here in Tallahassee and not being held accountable for it yeah most most of the time you can en ensure that uh you’re going to get punched in the face something’s going to happen to you if you decide to plant a flag on a logo now I get it you know the retort is well you don’t like it win the game look somebody’s gonna win somebody’s gonna lose every year like we’re just gonna set this up yeah what are we gonna do we gonna take the s from the logo at Midfield next year when we go down there and win the football game didn’t do it a year ago or the year before that or whatever I mean you it’s like I do understand Florida State’s not in a great position to push back given that the sad Cemetery exists usually it’s in an obscure place of the field I’ve seen it done a couple of times certainly not the Midfield logo but now it should be well it won’t be and I wonder how much longer the S Cemetery will exist well it’ll exist I wonder how many more additions there’ll be hour number friends family both maybe that’d be great I hope it happened and uh hey we had a crazy run of college football I do want to bring up something really quick before we go ahead and kind of recap where we’re at for people just tuning in this Monday is a hard Monday for a lot of people it’s a tough Monday I always thought that when you have a Thanksgiving that falls where it does and you then you you know you got a couple days off a lot of people have a couple days off before the weekend then you get the weekend and to work on Monday Lord knows the kids have off from about November 15th to the end of the month think you spankers hours it’s out of control uh I had a buddy who worked at a bank I used to rag his ass like you no working any so here’s the thing here’s the thing um I have decided and I would like to have the power to make an executive decision on this however I do not have it but I am curious to see if you’re with me or not on this here we go okay college football’s got to stop being stupid there is no excuse for this ridiculous sham that we now call overtime in college football we got to stop with the BS they made a mockery of an otherwise incredible football game between Georgia and Georgia Tech tired of it there’s no reason to be going to 27 two-point conversions there’s no reason to put the ball on the two effing yard line over and over again it’s like the way we ruin soccer we ruin soccer games with PKS when you’re trying to to decide the end of an alltime great game you don’t bastardize the sport by adopting cartoonish rules and compromised endings you don’t do it and the more that the longer this went on is it riveting sure but it’s not the sport what are we doing I would change at least one thing I I could see it either way where you would have a postseason designation for overtime and a regular season designation for overtime the way that baseball does it with um the ghost Runner and then you know hockey does a FIV minute a bridged version that resembles in no way what they do in the playoffs uhuh NBA I think it’s five minutes is it the NBA shorter in the regular season I think it’s five yeah go ahead I’m here for that discussion about it being different game play a football game I would if you’re the Unlucky half of the field that’s unable to see overtime that’s just too bad you lost a coin toss like the the team who is going to be going second on offense we do not need to process down the field this long pageantry of all right now they came up empty we’re going to walk 85 yards in this direction and we’re going to wait another two three minutes for them to get to the other end zone for us to conduct overtime four and then when we get to overtime six we’re going back the other way like I just no man that would be the thing I would cut because that just takes too much time first of all took an hour because of all the you know that’s what I’m saying you’re walking from one end of the field to the other it’s just the coin toss determines what half it’s going to be either the students get it or they don’t it’s the luck of the draw I I want to point out that we don’t need to do any of that play the game man and by the way if you’re worried about about it in a regular season game Tom now again I’m trying to make executive decisions I want to see where your head’s at commissioner Cameron is gonna tell teams here’s the deal man you got one of two choices this is what we’re gonna do we’re going to play Four quarter game if we’re tied at the end of that four quarter game and it’s a regular season game it’s tie we had ties forever they were fine we played probably the most famous tie anyhow it’s tied that’s where you’re at we we’ll judge by win percentage is what we do anyhow in a lot of sports so that’s that’s what we’ll do hey number two if you don’t like that rule fine I’m giving you choices because I’m a benevolent commissioner I have now said I would prefer just to say it’s tie guys should have won it and settled it in regulation you didn’t on to next week great tie you don’t like that rule put 15 minutes on the clock kick it off let’s go we’re playing football we’re playing a real football game we’re not doing this nonsense this Mickey Mouse asinine put it at the one yard line goop it’s just stupid I if you’re gonna change it I could see a hybrid approach to that as well like maybe both teams get a possession of the 25 yard line their own 25 yard line yeah you got to earn it and if it’s still tied at the end of that it’s still tied at the end of that because it’s one possession a piece yeah so if you’re the first team to get the football you decide what you want to do on fourth down you know you could just yeah you trust your defense is going to stop if you have to I would say if you go for it and you don’t get it the other team can take the ball where you don’t achieve the first down there just something something to have risk reward in that first possession anything but what they’re doing yeah or you could just say look it’s four downs there’s it’s four downs and if you don’t get it there’s no risk but you have one possession make it work um when you do get into overtime five and six and seven and you have to go for two in the second overtime also I didn’t realize that I thought it was third overtime that must have changed I think it did change in recent years we haven’t gotten that far uh to to ever need that in a football game but I I am here for a discussion on changing it I just I think that the postseason should be what you suggest which is 15 minute rolling quarters the way that the NFL now does that if you’re determining a playoff game and we got more of them now and they’re going to be still more coming in the near future yeah you can’t be doing this two-point dance to determine who moves on in the playoff rid it’s ridiculous just like we all get mad when we see a great soccer match end in PKS we just bastardize the sport and people say oh well they get tired Bo I’m tired get in better shape just in case you go to overtime you gotta be in good shape otherwise the other team’s gonna beat you because they’re not as tired that’s the way it works I don’t want to hear it I’m tired or the other roster has more depth that’s why you get better players and that’s also why you take more risks if you’re the underdog and you go for two right from Jump Street yeah yeah when you tie the game at or when you score at the end of the game you go I’m going for two because if this goes on much longer we’re dead we don’t have the better players yeah you make a strategic decision that affects the game you don’t do this nonsense I would have said it either way by the way I don’t you know it would have been nice if Georgia Tech had upset Georgia in essence they were the better team for much of that night but it doesn’t matter the point is that this felt gimmicky and silly the longer it went on I was like really this what we’re doing put the ball on the two over and over again it doesn’t really decide what a football team is or is not in those moments it’s silly right yeah the moment is achieved for Georgia Tech with even without the outcome you for for Georgia the outcome determines very you know very different feelings about their SEC Championship birth and what they’re gonna do right and you know the Vigor with which you play that game the desperation but for Georgia Tech it’s mission accomplished except for the final box score result right they get to say we went into Athens and look at what we did and they’re right and you’ll do it in recruiting it’s a hell of a feather in the cap for that coaching staff who’s got a program ascending and they’ve done a very good job now the second part of that game that I want to address before I forget oh no Joe Tess is an embarrassment to broadcasting he embarrassed himself and the profession and you know who knew it ESPN cuz the very next day they had had a pseudo mopa on the set of college game day in which two of their biggest names were like no man the ACC can get two in yeah there’s other enough damage has been done to the SEC we know that other conferences have good teams too and they can get in and they would not have felt compelled to say that had they not heard Joe testator I gotta be careful you almost called him something else gargling Joe was uh Joe was something and the problem is they are truly partners with no one else so instead of this Arrangement that they had where it was beneficial to that they are now truly partners and so you have a play-by-play announcer who serves more as an advocate than he does as a man calling the action this wasn’t the first moment of its kind relative to conference I’m ignoring last year’s ACC Championship Game completely when I say this right we were remarking on it a month and a half ago when he was calling allburn and Old Miss yes I would say that what’s happened there is that sanki feels very strongly that if you make the conference title game you’re in the playoffs otherwise the conference title games are in real danger and that’s too much money to lose so that’s what’s happening so no doubt sinki told ESPN or maybe Joe Tess himself get on your knees this game’s too close I need the SEC to be serviced and Joe you’re my guy I didn’t bring knee pads Joe you know who signs that paycheck do what must be done Joe 104 and that’s how it went down in the past you know you had really strong play-by-play announcers Vern lanquist or Brad or whomever right they were not going to do that they had a storied career they could stand up to network Executives they could say I’m not going to bastardize my call because you’d like a a result or you need something to appear a certain way the game’s the game I call it the way I call it I’ve been doing it for 30 years 40 years 50 years I’m not going to change because you’d like a game presented a certain way that benefits you the game’s the game it’s too sacred we’re not doing this I’m not going to be your shill now Joe Tess comes from a different school one in which he Dawns the knee pads and does whatever he has to do to ensure that his overlords are happy it reminded me of something that Vern and Gary Danielson did in 2006 when there was a lot of talk about Ohio State Michigan being round one the game was round one of two and they were going to be playing get the national title the way that Florida got a second chance at us in the 90s yeah and I recall on CBS for the SEC Championship game as Florida was winning that they went in and they leaned very very hard to make a case for Florida to be playing the winner of the game as it turned out it was Ohio State and I felt it went over the line at the time but I had no idea that in the future there would be something like this it’s akin to late night HBO versus something that well is on a scrambled Channel back in the 90s and early 2000s it was something to be old it was it’s a different level just a different level it was gross it was it was really really I’m a guy who by the way between the two of us when we get in these little debates together and we have fun with each other I’m the one who usually defends the SEC more than you do I I think it’s the best conference in college football and some years reason swaf is not sending you Christmas cards right some years it’s abundantly clear that it’s the best conference in college football and others less so uh but top to bottom it’s pretty much annually the best conference in college football that said they’re not perfect and in some years they’re not even a clearcut favorite to be you know awarded that uh Crown if you will there’s been a few years in the last 10 where I’d go okay I’m with you if you’re gonna make an argument for the ACC in 2015 if you’re gonna make an argument for uh the Big 10 another year there have been years where that’s happened for the most part it’s the deepest and best of the leagues hell the Pack 12 last year could have made a run and it’s swansong as it turned out but my my point would be that like I’m not saying this because of a major push back towards the SEC I’m not saying this that like well how dare they I’m saying come on have some respect where is the Integrity Joe Tess I mean my guy could barely call the game he was too busy telling us how the result really just didn’t matter because Georgia was going to the playoff they could lose by 17 it wouldn’t make a difference what are you doing Joe my job what if what if I’ll ask you this what if Texas beats what if Texas drags Georgia 57 to7 in the SEC Championship game and and and by the way had Georgia lost that game to Georgia Tech they didn’t but they might as well have perception wasn’t good so the point you H they’re in there really well I I think Texas drags Georgia I would put Georgia in because they beat Texas it’s a good quality win the regular season yeah and a quality loss round and round we go oh yes absolutely which actually is more important when you think about it the quality loss is actually more important that’s what really gets you to the next level so if it happens he’s probably right I think that’s the other reason they got very defensive on game day is that Joe’s probably right they just didn’t want him to say it 94 times it was just the silliest of I mean good Lord Joe please have some respect sir I’m done with the charade we all know it’s true they’re in and they should be I mean that was second and four people were like I mean it was funny you had you had SEC homers online go Jesus Joe giving up the ghost here everybody’s gonna be on to us yeah Joe Cadillac what are we doing take it back take it back take it back take it back I know how it’s gonna go you know how it’s gonna go right we don’t have to get on our knees here what are we doing Joe wow the only way we can’t put the fix in is if people know the fix is in yes if they recognize the con for what it is Joe Let It Go call the game you got a great one right before you you’re missing it you got a q card is this did you get the text did they draw it out for you I do Wonder like is it a situation where sanki is like give me my phone and then he just texts directly to Joe tesor and says uh here’s what you’re gonna say our darling’s on the ropes here you can see it this Georgia Tech team’s outplaying Georgia in Athens this is a terrible look for us let’s remind people that it doesn’t matter George is in yes King and Joe lean into it I’m listening watching from my mansion in Hawaii and I need to hear a convincing case for why Georgia could lose this game and the next and they’re in get to work Joe praise hands Emoji crown emoji IR shafel will join us in that’s warchant.com now back to Jeff on Real Talk 93.3 thanks for joining us hope you’re doing well on a glorious Monday the season is over but the busy just gets started times 10 as we await affirmation that uh the coaches are who are being mentioned and talked about uh over the weekend and on into this morning it started with Gus maon on Saturday not all that long before kickoff of Florida state Florida uh the word was getting out that Gus maon was going to be resigning as offensive coordinator uh for UCF and uh or as head coach of UCF excuse me and taking the offensive coordinator position at Florida State obviously we’ve not heard from Gus ban yet or Mike norell on that subject necessarily well not not at length anyhow and uh Florida state has had no official uh statement and uh and then today word was that Tony white would be taking the job as defensive coordinator now I can tell you as somebody who was in on that reporting I’m not shying away from that it appears that that will happen um but it is not confirmed yet it is not confirmed yet but uh it seems certainly that that is probably uh something we may hear later in the day I I hate when things happen when we get get off the air reminds me the old days with headlines when we would record headlines because of our schedules being weird the way they were and minutes after we got done recording headlines some major news would break and we would all be driving to our own abodes and somebody would have to call the other and be like uh you want to Circle back into the studio just found out so and so is not playing Saturday or so and so is you know getting fired or resigning or being hired or whatever it would be um and so you know those were the kind of situations you’d find yourself and and um it’s tough but you know these negotiations until it sign a line which is dotted you can have all the confirmation behind the scenes that you could possibly want from the source standpoint but you just don’t know because in the Witching Hour something can change so we’re waiting to see if 100% that is done I’m more interested in I I I really want them to have their moment I want these coaches to have their moment I want the momentum that comes with these ties I want to hear what recruits think about it so the sooner we hear from August mileson or if it’s Tony white as a DC the sooner we can hear from him the better I mean Signing Day is Wednesday Tom let’s get to the getting as they say let’s go there’s a couple of ways you can win with that you can either get some kids to flip and sign immediately with financial documents for the University it’s not the same anymore it’s not the national letter of intent it’s it’s not that document that they fax over as they used to uh their University grant and aid documents and maybe a a university contract that Michael Alford spoke about like a personal contract about your your value um and that is leaning towards the next April settlement being finalized um but yeah the other win would be if the kid doesn’t decide to sign during the early period at all maybe you’ve got some kids that you lost out on and flipped earlier this fall once they saw the disaster that was our football product and you get them not to do so on a Wednesday Thursday or Friday of this week and they say all right we’ll take the decision into you know either we’re going to show up on campuses early and roll e or we’ll take it to February that would be a win as well you can’t get that ball rolling in the right direction on faith alone where the head coach says this is going to be the guy it would be nice to have those coaches as I said change the gear put on the FSU Polo and make a couple of phone calls and facetimes well and there’s some things that uh are off of that that I get excited about as well that again I I I can’t speculate just yet but it seems like if certain dominoes begin to fall uh I think there will be some for momentum for the first time in a long time uh certainly since this year started right since this season got underway uh we will see then I think some some momentum for Florida State and people could use the shot in the arm that’s for sure this program could use the shot in the arm joining me now my cohort at warchant uh irel warchant.com in fact hello Ira how the hell are you buddy I’m good Jeff how you doing I’m doing great man I’m excited that the season is over that that blank show is behind us we don’t have to you know Doom and Gloom our way into dop Campbell anytime soon uh and watch yet another predictable loss play out in a disastrous season in fact we’ve turned the corner to where optimism rules the day and perhaps we’ll get some official announcements from FSU and the momentum that’s carried with those kinds of things your thoughts on what we’re hearing and certainly what it means maybe if Florida State in fact does make these uh hires official yeah I mean you the C ball on want as you as you guys have been is pretty much a done deal he’s he’s or it is a done deal he’s been meeting with recruits he’s been meeting with players uh he is part of the Florida State program now uh you know the Tony white situation is a little bit different just because it’s not every eye hasn’t been dotted every te hasn’t been crossed and so as long as that happens as long as that hasn’t happened you know there’s always a chance something can happen but but yeah I mean once once you’re at that point with those two hes I think it’s huge man because you know again we you know the last six months has just been um you know as far as the season went it just felt like a drudgery you know like how you knew there was no hope to turn it around this season and it was just a matter of okay what’s gonna happen after the season well this is a good way to start off the after season because um you know you’re gonna get juice in two different ways one I think you’re gonna get juice in terms of um the players that are attracted to those coaches based on their track records and now you have something to sell the other side of it is you know those guys may bring players with them um so it’s um it’s just gives you a lot of uh buzz it gives Florida State a lot of Buzz and then now the more people are interested in your program that leads to other recruits being interested it all kind of builds upon itself as opposed to the last six weeks which had just been kind of a an avalanche yeah it felt a bit like the batan death march going through this football season as we just sat about thinking good God another one of these things another step another Saturday another it was awful and now you have reason for optimism and you hope that uh okay look if it’s going to get turned around it’s a big if we don’t know if it’s going to or not uh there are no assurances even if these are the guys and we’re excited about that uh we don’t know that it’ll work out but I think for the first time you can see a path towards something getting a lot better and I do think that this will create some momentum and I do think that uh that you know this we’re in an unprecedented time and era of college football where who the hell knows I mean maybe they go eight and four next year nine and three next year and the next thing you know uh they’re right back to where they were prior to this season uh anything about Saturday’s game that you’d like to discuss probably not not a lot um I the the fumbling issue was nice little nice little cherry on top of this season but um no you know I mean I think when you you know just following up on your point you know I think when you look at um you know this team and and the players that are coming back this all these coaching changes what all of this does is it gives you a chance without firing your head coach to still give you a chance to reset things and and so now even the returning players like I you know talked to people in the business about Gus malan as the coach well he’s kind of a known as a kind of a little bit of red ass at practice and he’s gonna be very demanding and if you bring in some really strong other assistant coaches around him and then the Tony white you know what the things that the slipping that we’ve seen over the last year or so in terms of just guys not being as dependable and accountable and and and and maybe giving everything they’ve got uh that can change overnight even though the head coach didn’t change that can change overnight because the position coaches and coordinators actually have the most Hands-On uh work with the players so so again like I’m excited to see what this all looks like what it does for the roster but I’m also excited when we get to watch practic in the spring to see if we can kind of see a difference I have to believe that you know look you you asked the question and Mike obviously said what he had to say I think Mike wanted to send a message certainly to the kids and to others um but I also have to believe that deep down uh that these would be exciting days here the next 48 hours these would be it would be as if the the albatross had been lifted and Mike gets a renewed chance on life let’s discuss the Gus maon thing I’m not surprised I sent in a in a text that you were in as well that I’m not called it running into the the football father’s loving arms right uh in Gus mes on a familiarity there but a guy who has seasoned who’s been around who has had great highs and low lows and everything in between but they are philosophically aligned in a lot of what they do offensively obviously they goes all the way back to Tulsa and Gus is now the next in the line of coaches that I think are going to be common place which is those that leave the post of head coach and become a coordinator especially if you’re a little bit older on the second half side of your career I just think guys are probably having a hard time with what’s happening in college football but allowed to just call plays there’s no doubt Gus malan’s coming here to take complete control of the offense would you agree with that 100 perc you know the only part I don’t know is you know say again he has great success here in a year or two if the first couple years they go from the worst offens in college football to just up into the top 25 or 30 you know that may put him back in mix for you know Big Time head coaching jobs if that’s what he wants to do um so I I don’t know that he’s Des we haven’t heard from yet from him yet to know if this is um you know a situation where he Chip Kelly or somebody like that who’s trying to kind of take a step back um but as far as you know where I think this makes FSU stronger I think it’s in two ways and one is I think he’s obviously got a good track record the other thing and I think again from what I’ve heard about him being as demanding as he is I think that’s a positive thing the other thing is listen man this team has a lot of problems and and my issues with Mike norell being the offensive coordinator are not that I don’t think he could be a good offensive coordinator it’s just clearly he was distracted by all of the other problems that they had and it affected his ability to game plan I think it affected his attention to detail the some of the decisions they made on offense this season including in that game uh against Florida the other night I thought you know the one thing I would say about that game the other night is I thought could have run the ball a whole lot more than they did the way Florida was defending them and uh you know they they didn’t they kept dropping um you know Luke back and I thought that was a mistake and it led to eight sacks but as far as you know going forward now Mike norval can focus on all of these other aspects of the program let Gus fix the offense and I think the team could be much stronger overall so I’m excited about it because again it’s a guy that’s done it at a high level and you can quibble with the offensive approach and you can just you people can debate whether or not it’s what they want in a Florida State offense I’m just excited that Mike noral now can focus on everything else I think it’s important it’s a chance I think there’s a maturity that comes with uh obviously Gus and I think for Mike he’s got to take a step back my opinion is that he’s got to find a way to once again reconnect and and be you know to me when I talked to players who love Mike the ones who have have always believed that he was very genuine when they sat across from and they had discussions about their future their role within the program where he thought that they could get to while under his tutelage the possibility of the NFL and all those other things and challenging those players and those players all said that they wanted that challenge that he didn’t try to lift them up and you know plate them but instead told them you’re going to get better under me because I’m going to work hard to see and ride you to make sure that you get better I I feel like some of that messaging may have been lost I don’t know how and I can’t prove it but there didn’t see a to seem to be a sense of real Buy in and belief this year and I’m wondering if this gives Mike the chance now he’s under far uh less uh in terms of stress in terms of having to come up with the offensive game plan every week now that he’s got Gus to really kind of Ensure segment Group by segment group player by player that they’re connected that they’re all seeing the world the same way yeah I mean those are the kinds of things I’m talking about and it’s similar to listen when Jimbo Fischer the last few years when it was going south with him when we talked about maybe giving up play calling the same situation it wasn’t that Jimbo Fischer couldn’t be a good play caller he had proven he was a good play caller he won to National Title is a play caller um too actually going back to his time at LSU and so um you know there’s no doubt that he could do it but but you but there were so many things going wrong inside the program that he wasn’t noticing and I think that that’s one of the things I think you saw it this year um you know just talking to people around the program there were things that were slipping things that Mike norell in the past could pay attention to but was probably stretched a little too thin you know taking on uh you know between all the media demands all the fundraising demands all of the uh you know other issues in terms of working with his coaching staff and recruiting and all the challenges now with the transfer portal it is a completely different head coaching job than it used to be and I think it’s probably it makes you think maybe we’ll see less and less coordinator or or head coaches calling plays on either side of the ball as this job changes into a completely different job than it used to be fun times man by the way we also have a pretty good basketball team we get to talk about when you come on on Mondays here moving forward be a minute before they play another game but always appreciate it I’ll see you tomorrow and uh be well sir thanks Jeff see you man yep take care that’s irishell warchant.com I this is a larger discussion that I want to have so let’s continue it in a second Jeff K 933 talk radio warchant TV your local latest news inside Florida State athletics that’s warchant.com now back to Jeff on Real Talk 93.3 you know if we’re looking big picture I I um I have some thoughts on uh I guess what I think not just what I think Mike has to do but some of what led to this heads scratching situation of a season I mean nobody nobody even detractors of Mike norell thought that Forest state was going to go two and 10 and you don’t go two and 10 simply because you missed on some transfers you don’t your floor cannot be two and 10 without some real serious problems in addition to the roster in addition to missing on the transfer portal and you have some other issues that you’re dealing with I don’t mean him personally I just mean as a program something bigger was in play than you missed on DJ you know something bigger was at play and I do think that some things slipped and to pinpoint all of those is difficult we aren’t privy to some of the behind the-scenes stuff we certainly see uh these practices we’ve commented on some of those practices in the past some things elements even in during the successful run that we didn’t like or that I didn’t like any I don’t want to speak for other people and it starts with I think you got to be much more physical and if you lose NFL calber players and they lost a ton of them who were very physical they set the tone in practice because they played that way once they’re gone somebody else has to step into that role so it’s a combination of leadership but leadership through example with physicality and they got neither they were not more physical this year than last and they didn’t have an unquestioned leader let alone multiple leaders last year’s team had a ton of them a ton of them even jion Jones became a leader after he fully bought in it took him forever but he finally fully bought into norval and then others followed and certainly I mean there’s no doubt Bron Fisk was Jared verse was you had a lot of guys that were all in Jordan Travis was that they they if guys are all in others have no choice but to follow when those guys left they not only lost their talent they lost their leadership and Mike allowed for it he allowed for the daytoday sort of going through the motions and players were not I don’t think players were disciplined in the way that they saw their playing time severely hampered for going through the motions and you cannot do that it sets the wrong tone I agree on on a lot of fronts there I I just I think the practices in the spring and the fall the way I took them in they didn’t look remarkably different than the practices from 2023 and 2022 how the players got to work how the players got to work I didn’t detect something other than they were not going to be as good as a predecessor like yeah they weren’t as talented we knew something we knew from Spring yes we thought N9 and three 10 and two right the Free by weeks the way the schedule lays out this is very nice if you’re not going to be as good the way that the ACC scheduled it for us it was pretty nice so you’re going to have an opportunity to go back to Charlotte and you have an opportunity if everything breaks right that you can put up a record pretty close to the 12 and0 that you put up the year before because the practices didn’t look all that different the one thing I will say where they might have gotten burned too now that we’re out of the season they they have a habit of holding back veteran players that are good and making sure that those players in practice settings will not overexert themselves be ready to go for game day Mike says it all the time and we’ve seen what they can do we’ve seen them play plenty of football we know what we have in so and so they did it with Dylan Gibbons who I don’t know he took a live rep in pass Pro drills for like well he was your only good offensive lineman at the time so they protected him they protected some defensive lineman along the way some of which are playing very well at the NFL level like Jared verse did what was necessary in practice but it wasn’t like they were putting him out there through a meat grinder day after day after day now you can counter with that and say that’s because Jared was committed on a level outside of the practice structure that took him to an elite place that took him to where he’s in consideration for Defensive Rookie of the Year at at the NFL level maybe that’s part of what you’re talking about is that as Mike norell said in the first month of the season I’ve had to challenge some guys with how much work they’re putting in outside of being around this building I think that’s that’s the larger window nobody sees that nobody not even Mike because they’re not in the building that’s where they’ve got to find tooth Comet for this next year how do we ensure that these guys are putting in all the work that it’s necessary to turn in to turn out the record that we’re looking for well you can have massive rosters now and I gotta tell you I would get back to uh the intensity level that is live I’m talking about the live hitting uh at least once a week we’re we’re we’re getting after it we are getting after it people are getting hit taken to the ground the whole kitten Kaboodle when you listen to Brent key at Georgia Tech when you listen to Kirby Smart at Georgia when you’ve heard any number of coaches talk about you know whether it’s a bloodbath on Tuesdays or whatever it might be players know once a week this is your chin checked we’re what we’re going to be hardened in the way that you’re hardened when you train as a boxer you’re hardened you get your body used to those kinds of physical reps and I know these days it’s a fine line because we know we now know that it doesn’t need to be a junction boys type practice you don’t have to go 1957 with hold waterers from water from people and they’re nearly dying out there playing with broken arms and it’s a badge of honor and all you don’t have to do all that you can be sensible you’re trying to find the balance between that extreme way that things used to be and then where we are now where coaches lament that they have a very hard time assessing their offensive line because they’re not allowed to hit anymore well man you’re gonna have to find something this team was not physical so if I’m going to air on the side of uh uring a physical a physical group and know that I might get some guys hurt along the way I’m gonna take those chances we’re hitting we’re hitting more and we’re hitting harder and it’s happening now not every day not every day but at least once a week we’re getting tested well that was the thing and I I always want to be careful and I say it every time kind of reminds me of the jamus thing where we had to hedge every single time we discussed it I’m not second guessing the success that Mike Norvell had in 2022 and 2023 not it worked the practice methods worked that group turned out 19 straight wins they deserved to be in the final four because of the work that they did and the path that they followed new data comes in this year didn’t see that return on the investment with the way they structured practice so now that in 15 years of covering this sport got to see some practices for each head coach that’s been here in that time the Sabin style of practice employed yeah that’s the best one that is the most grueling practice of any of the of the bunch that I’ve seen and it’s really not close because all of the younger players are in motion at all times everybody moves all the time correct all of the backups are in motion at all times there’s more motion happening it it looks like it’s a tougher day at the office so to speak and you could call it that now quite literally it’s a day at the office because players are paid to that end I wonder if the structure of how he does things is going to change because Mike is very meticulous about each detail it’s not like he says Ah we’ll get out there and we’ll figure it out he scripts all of these things very closely I just I wonder when he looks back and he says how do we get better does he change the way the practice is structured I look forward to seeing that in the spring well he’s gonna have an opportunity to talk to uh a former mentor of his and see how uh Gus looks at practice if that happens we’ll see if in fact Tony white signs the line which is dotted um you know I mean then I imagine he’s got a away he coaches and teaches as well and Jack Jeff I used to hate the Oklahoma drill man but it made you better right I mean I remember the first time I ever had to engage in it I was well it’s not politically correct anymore but they called the junior football when I played that’s how old I am uh you know whatever you want to call it like peeee football whatever when I I remember the first time I ever had to do that we were laying on our back you had the cones you couldn’t go outside of you popped the whistle blue you popped up and let’s get it on and we did it all the way through uh high school and in the one year of college so I mean like this yes and it’s not like they never did that drill apparently in Jacksonville one day this year in Fall Camp they did break it out I was gonna say I never saw it so that would be the right answer is it happened in Jacksonville it happened in UNF I remember one of the uh warchant wraps saying that I think that was something that resembled an Oklahoma drill but you know again I do every week the thing is when you have to every offseason dip into the portal to go grab 15 20 kids and you’ve been recruiting here for four and five cycles that kind of that speaks to your lack of belief in the kids you brought in off the high school circuit or your or your development or whatever it is we don’t have anybody to hand it off to when we lose the guys from the 23 team right it wasn’t you brought in five dudes to help you put you over the top you’re bringing in numbers like at scale and you’re going to have to do it again this year but that that tells you that maybe whatever they need to do to get those 18y olds to be readymade at 20 needs to be a little different also think that Mike will have a chance like let’s say you now have guys that you uh the whole effort right there’s a whole evaluation it’s been talked about by the athletic director it’s been talked about by the head coach okay so they have assessed the self Scout they have assessed every aspect of the program and they’re now bringing in people different people different sets of eyes different experiences uh to come in and and help flip What’s Happening Here in Tallahasse all right so assuming that you make hires that you’re excited about assuming that you hire people that you trust implicitly to come in and do their jobs and take over their segment groups or their in this case Gus mes on the offense all right you’re free then to go and kind of play the role of CEO that we’ve talked about before where you don’t have to be a micromanager but what you can do is connect on a human level with every one of these guys it is it’s harder in college I I I never coached in college obviously but I remember when I coached that even at the at junior level like you know the Tallahassee the Timberlane Raiders when I coached the Timberlane Raiders I can remember they were 12 year olds 13 year olds I can remember I could yell at a kid after a drill and he responded a certain way and another kid if I yelled at I me completely shut down right now this is a very very different kind of an example but my point was that I had to learn each kid I had to see he’s motivated this way this kid’s motivated an entirely different way I can do this with him I can’t do that with him all right when you’re doing so many things like he’s been doing there’s a chance you disconnect and you’re not able to connect in the way that he seemingly was the last couple of years because he’s out putting out fires all over the place you know his o line coach good God Alex failed miserably here miserably this past year that’s an embarrassment to offensive lines everywhere those players regress they didn’t get better can you imagine the moment he recognized he was being betrayed and I don’t mean like at to brute I mean my man didn’t do his job I believe it was the second quarter of the Boston College game at seven to nothing with the look on his face correct okay so now in that moment you’re like I gotta I gotta pay close attention what’s going on over here oh this isn’t working okay then I gota go oh man I missed on DJ well now I got to do this this and this it was everywhere it was happening everywhere and I would like to believe that you’re freed from all of that putting out of the small fires that you put this one out this one pops up then another one pop now you’ve got the chance to kind of big picture all right is everybody on the same page we’re all understanding what’s required here you understand how it is is it reasonable for me to expect you get better every day that you work to getting better every day and that I ride your ass in that way that I’m going to ensure that tomorrow you’re better than you were today we’re working in that capacity because I don’t know that that was happening and when you don’t hold people accountable and they’re allowed to go back out there and they’re regressing and they’re not playing hard you’ve lost the bunch so that happens in season but you wonder if there are some equivalence in in the off season to that because you know you don’t you don’t know that’s going to happen until you get into the games and you say wait he’s playing again or he’s still in the rotation maybe there’s some stuff behind the scenes but I I I don’t know that what I know is the practices look the same and everybody who walked into walked on those practice fields thought this this team looks the part they have the size and they certainly have the pedigree coming into the season that indicates that a good Year’s coming and then and you’re right it has to be more than miss vals it has to be more has to be more has to be more no doubt and since I’m about to cough and we’ve got a third hour we break Jeff C 93 real talk radio warch [Music] TV your body and transform your life with dexit Tallahasse your goto Theory Fitness on Real Talk 93.3 now stop what you’re doing and listen closely it’s time for the Jeff Cameron show in five four three two one e but it’s busy in a good way no longer having to uh talk about the next loss on the horizon but rather the changes that are being made and Mike spoke after the loss on Saturday that it would be swift he also said he didn’t expect a lot of guys to leave maybe that’s true maybe it’s not I don’t know I think it certainly will depend on what they think to some extent of the hiring of the coaches that we’re going to hear about in the next 24 hours 48 hours 72 hours uh we’ve already heard of one over the weekend that was Gus Malon coming over from UCF leaving that position as a head coach there at UCF and uh a grand reset as he comes here to be OC that marks the second year in a row that a sitting head coach has left that position to become an offensive coordinator Chip Kelly did it last year with UCLA then going to Ohio State as the OC and a lot of buck guys today wish he hadn’t that said I think it’s going to be a bit of a trend and uh you know what does it mean look I was never a huge gusb on guy as a head coach I did appreciate that his uh his uh run early on uh going all the way back to when he was OC at Auburn before becoming the head coach at Auburn uh he was a guy that uh was filled with a lot of uh you know truly original uh game plans that uh were later on kind of acclimated not acclimated uh acred by others in the industry and now become commonplace in offenses everywhere there are certain elements of what he brought to the table all those years ago that is now a common part of every offense that has run and so you know that sort of Ingenuity you dip the cap to and say okay good job you know that that we always knew that uh I like him better as an OC than I do as a head coach so I’ll take a wait and see approach I know this and I said it in hour one and I said it when you and I did the sit down video on the day that the announcement was made that he was leaving UCF Florida state will run the ball fora State’s going to have success running the ball the one constant there have been ups and downs in his time as a head coach whether it be at Auburn or at UCF whatever it might be the one thing remained true all the way through and that is that teams that he coaches can the ball hell they ran the ball pretty decently this year at UCF last three years they’re top 20 in the country in terms of yards per run yards per rush I like that metric it’s uh somewhere in the middle between the basics and the advanced because I want to know every play how do you how do you rush are you consistently winning are you succeeding in Rush neutral situations when you when you have to have it and in situations where you need to close out games all of those situations are represented in yards per carry yards per Rush again top 20 the last three seasons at UCF so bring that here yes I’d like to see it it’s going to be part and parcel though to what you do with the uh the roster itself so how what do you acquire whom do you acquire terms of offensive lineman that can help you run the football I think we’ve got enough talented backs here at Florida State and I think some of them like a freshman Cam Davis are not able to show what they truly can do because they’re under duress too often now I think much like a quarterback a running back can see ghosts when they get handed the football because they will act out of panic they’re like oh my God look at that I can get to the line of scrimmage unabated this is random and weird uh then there are times where they expect to be underd duress behind the line of scrimmage and they’re not so that’s a long long way of saying get me offensive lineman to help this guy do what he’s done everywhere he’s been which is run the football we’ll see I’m not inspired by the uh the name I wasn’t inspired by the push notification that we got uh and the text we got when it it came down on Saturday but this is not Gus malan as your head coach it’s him as your offensive coordinator he’s a Hired Gun let’s see how he shoots it’s always about Personnel more and more over the years we’ve had that kind of conversation on this show that you’ve seen coaches fail and succeed same guy different places we understand how it works Gotta Have players got to be able to go get Players let’s see how this excites uh the the the talent and let’s see how quick we can get some kids to say yes and get this turned around I agree with you in that sense uh if in fact Florida state is able to bring in Tony white as the defensive coordinator it is expected that they are going to do so we’re just waiting for that contract to be signed uh I don’t know the the inner workings of what an agent is saying to an athletic director and everything else right now but I do know that uh Florida state is in contact in conversations with Tony White that is happening that has happened for all we know it’s done but that’s a guy that I like in terms of what he’s accomplished as a DC what he’s been able to do in recruiting and I do believe that if that’s the guy then Florida State’s going to see some momentum shifts here now it also very well could mean that other coaches will come with we’ll see I know in Lincoln certain Outlets have ran with a story that Terrence knon is is going to be leaving along with Tony white now I don’t have any information on Terence Knighton that my sources only talk to me this morning very early about Tony white I did not hear anything about Terence knon so I’m not gonna put that out there as anything that I know but Nebraska people seem to think multiple sites that cover Nebraska seem to think that teren kn would be joining Tony white if this deal gets done now there are a couple things about that uh I talked to my sources with Nebraska that cover Nebraska that in essence have this role covering you know that I have here in Tallahasse they have there in Lincoln uh Sean Callahan’s a guy that I’ve worked with in the past when I was doing some work for the Nebraska site for on three and he is the guy in terms of covering Nebraska he’s covered it for 20 some odd years and all that he says Terence knon is beloved by players that he is going to be if he comes if he goes if it’s in fact white that comes and knon joins if Tony white comes over as the DC and knon joins he believes it’s devastating news for Nebraska and great news for Florida State because knon can recruit and look Nebraska’s defense the last two years under Tony white have been a top 20 by any measure defense he runs a 335 but he’s multiple he’ll have plenty of fourman fronts as well they stop the run by and large they stop the run this creates the conversation Tom creates sort of the uh the the the motus hopper rendi that I’d like to see which is that you’re going to run the ball on offense and that you’re going to stop the run on defense and to do both you have to be able to be extremely physical you have to bully people to run the ball you have to bully people to stop the run and I believe those kinds of teams have an attitude it’s permeate permeated throughout the the entire roster that if we run the ball a that travels and if we stop the run that is the recipe for Success you make teams one-dimensional you create turnovers they did that at Nebraska under Tony white so let’s see if we can get confirmation before night’s end or tomorrow that that deal is done I would be excited about that we’ll see if it gets done it does seem like in in this era of college football that we’re currently living I’m not talking about off the field for once talking about on the field it is more of a run game Centric sport than the professionals the pros are more aerial than College I think right now now there have been times where it’s been different but I feel like if you’re looking at you know obviously what Michigan did last year uh is a great example of how you can run your way to a national title just shortly after Joe burrow passed his way to a national championship for LSU it does seem like as you’re watching more pockets of college football around the country and I think we all are because of the playoff 12 spots at the table lower scores more running of the football more physicality it just this thing always goes back and forth it oscillates you know between one way and the other way but I feel like running the football is more of uh it’s an equalizer with the quarterback running game obviously uh you can have illegal men downfield they’re not illegal at three yards depth so that changes the way that you construct an offense and you play versus in the pros where they only give you three feet instead of three yards but look around this weekend Clemson South Carolina low-scoring game physical it was about the point of attack same thing happened in the game between Michigan and Ohio State between the two they score a total in the 50s like you’re not seeing a ton of 41 to 35s I don’t think anymore in these deciding games unless Miami’s playing then they always give up 30 plus points and score a lot of points themselves well that was like a 457 run that Syracuse went on glor they were down 21 to nothing yes yeah so 4 yeah 42 17 45 17 whatever that is something but you the big 12 you know era of all right it’s a race to 50 you it it doesn’t feel like the game is heading in that direction in fact it feels like the game it’s not just because of the clock rules but I think it’s also the style of play you’re seeing more often in college football that you’re heading toward towards 27 31 points being more often than not good enough to get the job done so to your point an emphasis on being able to run the ball an emphasis on being able to stop the run feels more modern than it did five six years ago in the sport yeah the as the day has gone on by the way with the Tony white stuff you know this morning I was following up with my sources about Tony white that we’re getting confirmation being and Jean and others obviously in this business I don’t want to say we were the only ones as the day has gone on it seems like obviously that information has leaked from a lot of different places I don’t know that Florida State’s in love with that uh because programs typically don’t want that information to get out while they’re in negotiation because it can hinder the finalization of a deal and they can get leveraged and they and they don’t like that but if you look now for example I was just during the break checking on various places you know you have Nebraska sites going with that also you have uh you know the new yorktimes times you have the athletic going with that as well um you know for I I quote from this article fora States in talks with Nebraska defense coordinator Tony white to fill M norvell’s vacant DC role uh you know the spoke person spoke on condition of anonymity yeah well so did mine and they go on to talk about white is uh you know the Florida State’s in the middle of I think they they called it a a a coaching staff overhaul yes uh Forest St is in the midst of a total staff overhaul was the quote from that article uh White directed a defense that ranked number 11 nationally last year in yards allowed per game during his first year at Nebraska their 19th this year uh he was interviewed to be the head coach at UCLA which is his Alma moer it was believed that he finished runner up in that interview process he was also interviewed to be the head coach at San Diego State the folks at Nebraska believe he is a future head coach quote unquote from Callahan to me Husker online he is a leader of men for sure people follow him listen to him intently believe in him okay great that’s what I’d like to hear that’s that’s nice to hear he was again he a guy that has head coaching aspirations somebody might say well why why would he leave Nebraska uh where he has paid $1.6 million to be the associate head coach and defensive coordinator and he’s having success they go to a bowl for the first time since 2016 in large part because of him why would he leave I guess they would view that as an upwardly mobile position and program to come to a two And1 Florida State program whose head coach is perceived a lot differently right now and the answer might very well be a couple of things don’t forget that Matt rule also washed out his OC earlier this year here in unconventional fashion uh he had an offense coordinator who he then said yeah listen I’d like Dana hogerson to come in as an analyst and work with you now I’m sure that went over well and within a week that offensive coordinator was now just working with the tight ends and Dana hogerson was no longer an analyst but rather the guy calling the plays so I’m wondering and it seemed Fair based on what I’m reading and hearing from people at Nebraska just how easy it is to work with Matt rule probably not probably not all that easy he’s been successful but not all that easy this job IA brought it up last hour we’ve brought it up before this defense and this offense were so bad at varying points offense worse than the defense for sure but defense is still not great struggles to get off the field on third down as we’ve documented all the numbers that you can look at this job sets up so nicely for the next OC and the next DC because a you should never be this bad at Florida State you have too much access to Talent where you are what this school is you should never a be two and 10 you should also never be dead ass last in any number of categories that judge an offense or a defense you shouldn’t be in that realm so if you are merely competent let alone excellent at what you do you will come in here and be perceived as responsible for a massive turnaround in year one if Florida State let’s just use Gus Mal on if Florida State goes from the 130 whatever ranked offense in the country to 65th which isn’t even good 65th ranked offense you’re going to be like it’s a miracle you’re going to be over the moon you’ll see some monum of success on first down what’s that all of it right you’ll run the ball because Gus has always run the ball all of a sudden you’re like we can run it which means we can control the lot of scrimmage which sets everything else up oh my God right you’ll be overwhelmed with joy defensively this guys just engineered back-to- back top 20 defenses in f plus and in your standard traditional St uh statistical measures all right what if he comes to Florida State and they top 45 you’re gonna be like those are the numbers that’ll get you an upset next year you will win a game that you don’t expect to win when you wake up that day maybe even Alabama well Dare To Dream buddy you will it’s not that big of a dream compared to a couple few years ago it could be it could be it could it’s also week one strange things happen tendency break all that kind of stuff but yeah if you’re top 60 in both categories you’re not good not not as good as we want to be you’re hell of a lot better than you are right now and you’re G to be in some games and you’re gonna win a game or two that we don’t think we’re GNA win sitting here right now so it’s either one of your rivalry games it’s Clemson um that game is on the road this upcoming year or it’s Alabama you’re going to win one of those games if you’re up to that level it’ll be nice to see if we can get there but it’s all about getting these dudes in here oh yeah process and going to get players because they could come in here with this roster let’s just say that you could run it back with the exact same players year over year no no you’re looking at four or five wins you know you’re probably looking maybe at six at most you got to get better players in here and so it doesn’t matter who you’re GNA hire doesn’t matter who finalizes the paperwork you got to get better players but those guys will be responsible in large part for some of the kids that are now going to be interested in coming here and so the sooner we get those announcements the better and the momentum that you feel from that Hey listen if in fact Tony white is the guy and say he wants to bring Terence knon with him as the defensive line coach of course Terence played over there for Jacksonville with the Jaguars is a guy that is uh his reputation is that of um of of a guy that’s fun to play for that demands an awful lot but is also a guy that kids are attracted to in terms of like I want to play for a guy that he’s got NFL experience he was a defensive line before he’s all these things he’s pretty younger guy uh he’s in his sixth coaching season in 2024 this past year after a long NFL career so you know there’s a guy that’s gonna resonate I was uh yeah when you had your conversation with Sean Callahan I was e dropping I heard it and I gotta tell you that as it relates to Tony white if you’re telling me the phrase is leader of men I’m greedy all I’m thinking about is getting players in here that is the perfect phrase that I want to hear if they’ve got talent in Nebraska on that defense we’re gonna have some kids come in from Nebraska I would think to follow him if he’s a leader of men they go where where he goes it’s like the generals versus uh the uh the emperor in Rome if he’s that type of leader of men look at that roster and let’s see if we can’t bring a couple few guys with with him if Tony white is going to take the job here in Tallahassee leader of men not oh well he’s productive but the kids hated him you know you could be productive and the kids don’t like you very much yeah but if you’re a leader of men that tells me that there might be some underclassman or upper classman that might want to go from Lincoln to a nicer climate down here in Tallahassee by the way I did crack up laughing that uh if if Terrence knon is ever a coach on the for State staff as a defensive line coach and say he goes with Tony white if this all happens my man’s nickname is pot roast and that’s about as good a nickname as you can have for a defensive lineman for a defensive line coach your nickname is pot roast that works oh pot roast will get him in the shape all right it also hits you in The Sweet Spot with the cool weather oh buddy there’s nothing like a pot roast delicious I mean yeah I wish we were eating pot roast right now it’s delicious my mom makes the best pot roast of all time it’s unreal if if I had one dish from my mother who’s a good cook I would say Mom make that pot roast surprisingly you know what number two would be you don’t tuna casserole oh yeah you could have given me a billion guesses delicious I don’t know what it is that she does with that tuna noodle casserole but it’s fantastic the pot roast was uh my Aunt Mary’s specialty and we would often go over to her house on Sunday nights for dinner which I was never fond of um because well they would talk and have coffee until 10 11 o’clock at night and we play dominoes and I enjoyed dominoes but it was one of the 12 piece dominoes so those games would go on for two hours it’s a Sunday I was very responsible I wanted to go to bed it was Monday for school but if they said well she’s making pot roast I was like oh no problem how wait we stay in 1 a no big deal let’s go let’s go mentioned Gus Malon before he was the offensive coordinator of the year in ‘ 06 the Royals Award winner in 2010 won a bunch of coach of award Coach of the Year Awards the Eddie Robinson won the AP the Liberty Mutual all those back in 2013 when they played us for the national title and lost uh but uh you know this is a guy that had success against Nick sain in Alabama and I think in large part because he was able to run the football and uh yeah also because he had a generational talented quarterback in one of those years too but uh I am curious Tom we didn’t talk much we did talk a little bit about it but one of the reasons they’re able to run is he changes the math he is going to run your quarterback and he’ll convert a defensive back if he needs to do it as he did with Marshall so Nick Marshall getting to the national championship game is a borderline Miracle uh well they needed about three of them to get there yeah they did but they got a very lucky season so uh we’ll see I am kind of curious what Florida state does we didn’t talk much about Saturday’s game and for good reason but would you just ride with Luke or you going out and bringing somebody in for certain I’m letting Gus make that call well you bring him in to make that call and and I he’s got enough tape now I I think you’ve run enough tape out there of Luke to to give Gus a chance to see what he’s about um I would hope that all these quarterbacks I know it’s probably a pipe dream but I would hope all these quarterbacks and by that I mean the two main ones in Brock and Luke come back for spring to see if maybe they there’s a Synergy with this new offense that hadn’t been there before why not well what do you have to lose I would say this uh I think Luke’s upside as a runner is pretty apparent it is it is that I that’s the one thing that you kind of take away he has some moments where he makes a throw where you’re like oh that’ll play that’ll be great uh has a hard time right now processing as quickly as you’d like him to but he’s a true freshman behind a terrible offensive line with average ass to poor wide receivers so I get all that um but there’s no doubt about the ability to run the football the willingness to run the football he’s athletic well they clearly wanted to vet him as well because Brock saw how many plays the last couple of weeks not much not much at all so I would hope all you know the two of them come back but if you dip into the portal go get a quarterback it’s probably not realistic it’s just that again it’s not like a if I’m Brock Glenn my tape is going to get me uh get my phone to ring like crazy for a starting job anywhere this is essentially a brand new offense I get there are similar Concepts and and terminologies could be very similar if not identical in some circumstances like I get all that but you’ve got a different person calling the shots yeah why not take the try out with the new guy see if his message sinks in with you and see if you don’t look at the football field the same way before taking off uh for another program it’ll be interesting to see what they choose to do uh but for me you know I’d say let Gus do it but I hope Gus does bring in a quarterback transfer I clean start clean start and then let them battle in Spring and if Luke surprises you then great you got a good problem on your hands yeah it’s been a tough tough time and task to try to figure out what either one of these guys are uh a they’re so young and you’re asking them to play before you’d like them to now the response is well Agway is a freshman yeah Agway is a beast I mean he’s a Camas he’s he’s a really good player he does have some inconsistencies though the um yeah there’s a little dj in him where you go well that was open what the hell and that was before the hamstring injury yeah I just think his upside is is pretty obvious and if he were healthy I I think you’d see the other aspect of his game that is scary which is that he’s big he’s strong and he’s mobile now you know he’s less far less mobile than he was because of that hamstring injury but but not so stricken by that hamstring injury that he couldn’t tell darl Jackson to get the hell off me I’m gonna make a play anyhow yeah that is true uh that’s a play that you can’t you can’t teach um it also is you know part of the rule where I think he might believe he has him in the grasp and you know that’s just uh the nature of things because if you bring him to the ground too hard they’re gonna throw a flag on Daryl Jackson I’m gonna go ahead and take my chances and sling his ass to the ground the the thing is if DJ actually played well on Saturday it would have been a blowout a lot earlier there were there were a lot opportunities a lot of misses and I think I was right we could have run the ball a little bit more consistently I thought that was there for the taken looked like it was there get the quarterback I mean if that’s your base play What If by drive three you had said in that moment you know what it doesn’t seem like they have a whole lot for this Luke run or give game like the very Basics let’s just run that to death well I think they were surprised by it I think they were surprised at how often it happened now of course we would not have been able to sustain that since we were going to Fumble the ball eight times eight sweet Jesus who fumbles eight times what are we doing out here that was buffoonery eight fumbles good Christ man eight I at some point I think people just began to chuckle I think they had 14 tfls as well and how many sacks nine eight eight sacks yeah I know some of the fumbles happening in the same play but you think about it yeah you know tfls are sacks so that’s inclusive 22 plays that end with you tackled in the back field or you put the football on the deck eight sacks I dare say believe it was 17 to three at the time after yet again we fumble a punt Because by the way how man look I told myself I wasn’t gonna do this Tom can tell you that it was uh couple weeks maybe three weeks ago that I texted you which you sometimes chuckle at because you don’t usually respond you just let me get it off my chest well uh yes I also have to think uh before I do the postgame show so I texted you that McCoy sucks ass at punt returns and I think I use those words probably and I said a he doesn’t always catch it like he should B he doesn’t do anything when he does and C he looks incredibly uncomfortable he doesn’t look like a guy who’s confident that he’s going to catch it ever now here’s my problem with that and which is why I’m glad we’re making massive changes to the staff they practice special teams over there more than I’m comfortable with they spend way too much time practicing special teams it’s out of control how much they practice special teams how does it never occur to you in those practices my man can’t catch these he sucks at this we should get somebody else to do it what are we looking at would be that there’s no other candidates which would also be well look before um Keon decided to try his hand at it last year and he did a good job just pure athleticism you right you had the same problem you did there aren’t enough Super Soakers in the world to correct these coaching issues when it comes to punt returners because there’s never any Gusto to come up and catch the ball never and when they do catch it you’re like many dicey well and how many times do you see them run up to catch and then back off out of fear and then point at the ball late I mean that’s not the Gunner’s fault at that point if it Clips him on the on the leg well it’s also just weird that I’m not gonna sit here and pick on the kid over and over again because he shouldn’t be back there but what that attempt at a catch was that of a child I mean what was what was he doing well here’s here’s the hot take is that your kicker and your punter covering up for covering up for horrible special teams deficiencies when special teams come up they’re largely talked about as a positive for Florida State yeah that’s Mastro and Fitz yeah now you might have helped Fitz get his head screwed on right and you get credit for that because he was about out of football and now he’s going to get paid yeah at the professional level so good for you in that regard that opening kickoff was a confused moment again as well also by the way that as much as we like Master mono that first punt was ridiculous he didn’t have a great night no no no line drive no hang I’m saying is what about the punt return game or the kick return game has a saying or the coverage games that that tell you this crew I mean they are just as good as it comes yeah they’re not no no yeah so that wasn’t surprising but when we saw it I went really after all this time of practicing special teams we can’t we can’t catch a punt that does happen in practice now it been a minute since I’ve been out there but going back to Camp you’re like man he he doesn’t believe that he’s no that doesn’t look confident at all no how about this next guy oh God he’s more scared than the first one so my point was at 17-3 and you had given away that 1 point because you can’t catch a punt you’re driving you get all the way down there you’re about to score although we do know a fumble is coming if you do not fumble there and you make that 1710 we got a game we got a game because you have some things that are working for you you have a quarterback that’s beginning to gain a little bit of confidence you’re running him well you’ve got the Run game going lagway is not on his game you got a shot to make that somewhat interesting maybe a little game pressure maybe a little something absolutely it it was within touch got a chance you got a chance but of course you fumbled and that was that it resembled the Duke game in a lot of ways where these self-inflicted wounds the free points you’re handing out are are just too much just the the points off of turnovers themselves are too many to overcome eight fumbles I’ve never heard of such a thing in my life they only lost five of them five five five eight fumbles yeah eight it’d be one thing you’re like well it was kind of you know it was coldeven in the flow of the game that eighth one was in garbage time seven of them were really in the flow but I’m saying like most of the time you’d go oh well man the ball’s slippery out there tonight it must be a little de in the air it’s cold it’s water is not fumble in the ball all over the place eight I I began to chuckle I’m like well this this season cannot end soon enough eight it’s funny eight fumbles is an absurd number ridiculous it is an absurd number say that out loud eight fumbles I’m still stuck being mad at the punt return game because it’s been an Abomination for years and I know that’s a small detail of the game doesn’t happen a whole lot but you’re right for the amount of time that we spend on it for it to be one of the credos of what the program is about and for it to be Florida State where usually you have a badass punt returner or at least an adequate one that can catch the ball with some regularity that hurts that it’s that specific situation that bugs me it’s like poor clock management these are just things that are very correctable they can’t hit you catch it that should be the C they’re not allowed to hit you they’re not if they do it’s good news you might be a little shaken up but it’s great news if they hit you so just catch it eight FS eight by the way are are rumored to be next defensive coordinator I feel bad for him I mean did you see the stats in the Iowa Nebraska game did you see how badly Nebraska dominated that game and lost to Iowa that is insane I I think uh the numbers that I saw were I I think what Iowa had five total first downs compared to a 20 for Nebraska they were out gained like 340 something to 100 y I mean it’s insane yeah that’s a toughy again if he’s named defensive coordinator remember what Nebraska did to Colorado which turned out to be a very very good offense this year Colorado got dominated by Nebraska’s defense shadora had uh his worst day Nebraska couldn’t run the ball he got beat up Ohio State looked awful against Nebraska now I know that somewhat mitigated your enthusiasm anyhow because you just watched Ohio State stumble their way through the dark of offensive football against Michigan but you know Ohio state has weapons everywhere and they could not run the ball against Nebraska operating at a deficiency if you’re Nebraska playing Ohio State without question and they went into Columbus and nearly pulled that off um we we’ve seen a lot of interesting moments with Nebraska’s defense now the lone exception is that they got blown out by Indiana but again that’s a 14 to7 game in the second quarter they turn it over next you know Indiana goes down on scores and Katy bar the door but that’s kind of the interesting thing uh uh with him that they shut down some really high-powered offenses and that’s kind of you know what we would get excited about obviously just seeing the the tangible results but then also knowing that this is a guy that might bring a little something with him that creates buzz and recruiting and that we can’t comment on until this is made official if it if in fact it goes through yeah it’s just it’s about can you do more with less in the immediate because you’re gonna have to and then can you bring in more so that you don’t have less for the future that’s what we need out of you in the immediate we need you to make some lemonade for us some chicken salad can you do it and both of these coordinator hires if and when they’re finalized they have a track record of of making more out of just a su of their parts it would be very much appreciated if they could do that next year Shannon Young my guy loans for nos.com family independent mortgage Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation I warchant.com now back to Jeff on Real Talk 93.3 meant to mention here a few of you guys have weighed in and I failed you by not getting to your contributions thank you so much for that Nev G hiring for me skeptical optimism much like the rest of my beloved Atlanta Falcon season I still have trust in norell not a lot but some thanks for that noev appreciate you C black is noell replacing other coaches Jeff what other coaches are being replaced uh well it looks certainly we know OC DC wide receiver coach I would offensive line coach uh so we know all of that right I’m gonna guess that we’re gonna have in total somewhere in the neighborhood of five coaching changes uh maybe more maybe more in addition to the three no I think in total it’ll be five it could be more could be more five’s a lot that’s a lot that’s an overhaul when you change out your OC and your DC and your well and your OC was also the offensive line coach you’re getting another offensive line coach I’m here to tell you 10 a lot because that’s how many losses we had yeah too many too many five doesn’t seem like a lot 10 10’s a lot seven feel good to you a little better better than five Well here here’s here’s what I will say if in fact again we’re seemingly just waiting now on the the final details but if Tony white is the new defensive coordinator if according to Nebraska sites he is in fact bringing with him Terence knon well now you have a new defensive line coach and we all love Odell so that would mean to me he’s either taking a different role within the organization which is entirely possible or he’s retiring which he’s been rumored at the start of every season for the last five years to be on the verge of retiring so I’m guessing either he’s retiring or he’s volunteered to move to a different part of the operation I don’t know what it is they would never fire Odell Hagen so if Knighton if Knighton it’s a big I big F is coming with Tony white now you’ve replaced your defensive line coach now you’ve replaced your offensive line coach now you’ve replaced your offensive coordinator and now you’ve replaced your defensive coordinator and we’re just getting started other guys will come in and be a part of this if they change out uh I I suspect that puchas is gone so I would think you’re gonna have a new defensive end special teams coach uh I suspect that I do not know that that is speculative on my part I’ll own that I don’t think that Papua will be retained I don’t know if that’s true or not we’ll see but that I I was asked a question I’m answering the question sure so what are we up to there than I mean that’s more than five more than yeah so we’re starting to get to yeah I’m feeling better yeah it just it seems to me that with the compressed schedule because you didn’t make any dismissal announcements at the conclusion of the game on Saturday into yesterday right because there’s only three days left till the signing period I mean when Jimbo left I remember at least a few coaches stuck around to help finish the recruiting class like they were still on the road so weird talking to commits Charles Kelly was among them uh Randy Sanders I think did too if I have the specifics wrong then I forgive me but Jimbo was gone he was swaying to the music and talking to the dog at Texas A&M yes and then um we still had some some coaches who were knew that weren’t going to be retained still recruiting I wonder if that’s happening here I I would Hazard a guess that has to be happening to some degree yeah and like you said earlier obviously you can have unlimited coaches now and staff and analysts and who knows I mean guys may be taken out of one realm and then given another role if they’re willing to do that I mean you know there’s probably a swallowing of the pride that comes with something like that that happened to David Kelly under Willie yeah well David was he an onfield coach he was kind of not allowed to do anything for a while there he usually just leaned against the back goal post there I think that was after the switch R yeah it didn’t do a lot of anything was a toughy typically just saw him leaning against the goalpost good Gig if you can get it why does everything have to be so damn difficult for my school golly guys let’s get it together uh so C black I’ll just say I don’t know I think he’s probably going to be maybe five six seven something like that I mean different positions yeah you know well it’s also this is the first offseason in the history of the sport where analysts can still be onfield coaches so with that reality you are now looking at the possibility of reassignment in a way that was never possible before I will say if you had an on the field role in a title that says you know DC or OC or o or whatever and you get asked to not fulfill that role anymore it’s got to be tough it’s got to be tough it would be but look maybe they’re doing the math on the buyout versus keeping you around I might as well might as well have you do something while you’re around here instead of paying you x amount of dollars to walk that’s a tough one that’s when you’re like hey uh Tom listen uh we want you to do some work for us on the show but you’re not going to be the executive producer anymore um we think it’d be best if you forwarded emails that comes into the show account at full Freight full rate um we’re not sure we’ll talk about that I don’t know that you’re going to make as much but uh for now we just like you to forward emails we’re gonna bring Bob in to do the executive producing good luck Bob that’s a Duffy man that’s have a good if you’re gonna pay me full right to do emails instead of uh the show I don’t know I might think about it I can polish up the CV while I’m getting paid full price I was say every day you show up to work knowing that’s Bob’s problem that’s not my problem is to send emails I don’t know what you Bob don’t ask me don’t ask me anything Bob you wouldn’t have that jacket of Shame warn every day you walked into the facility it’s kind of like a a hybrid kiss my ass on Main Street it kind of is except you still have to show up for work getting paid full price to do far less how you doing yeah that’s what I’m doing I’m GNA be home in a reasonable hour yeah hey these emails don’t forward themselves guys let me get in here everybody check this out forward CC yeah there it is I got this down we go I don’t know uh yeah these guys were probably once told that their services at their particular position are no longer needed I would imagine we’ll probably try to find them employment elsewhere I would I would guess that’s that’s the toughy showing up to work every day parking in your spot oh oh Tom Tom this is reserved for the executive producer the email forwarder is it’s back over there in the guest slot it’s it’s tomorrow simal headlines Wednesday another JCS here’s the deal this should be an extremely busy week and I think in a lot of ways one that we’re all welcoming and looking forward to because I’m hoping I’m getting random calls from you and Jean and Ira about videos we need to shoot because there’s a name in the hopper and we got to be ready to go for if in fact they’re hired all those kinds of things those are fun tasks those are fun jobs to do because after a season like this all we can look forward to are the changes that will help Salvage something of what remains this football program under Mike Rell after a season as cataclysmically bad as this one so I look forward to it and I hope he’s attacking it with the same sort of vigor I know he’s embarrassed you can tell by his answers to questions and press conferences that he’s embarrassed so let’s go let’s have some fun with this let’s get on with it you can’t it doesn’t seem to me do any worse than you did this past year you cannot next year is going to be better there you go just tell yourself that every day when you get up next year we’ll be better and works it will be better great work out of you sir my thanks to all of you you guys be well we’ll talk to you again tomorrow until then peace [Music]
