[Music] what’s up everybody welcome into Dodger heads presented by Dodger blue.com my name is Jess ble joined today by Daniel starkin here to talk about an interesting rumor Daniel that won’t go away Juan sto is going to make a lot of money that much we know what we don’t know is whether or not the Dodgers are actively involved in this Ken Rosenthal uh along with some of his colleagues at the athletic put out an article yesterday and I’m going to read the sentence the paragraph that caught my attention and Daniel you tell me what you make of this he said the clubs publicly known to be most serious about stto are the New York Mets New York Yankees Boston Red Sox Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers the two people briefed on the negotiations said that all remaining contenders have made offers above $600 million when I first read this I think holy crap the Dodgers have made a $600 million offer to wotto I’ve been told by other people there’s a way to read this where here are the five teams interested the real contenders made 600 million we don’t know who those are how do you interpret what Ken Rosenthal writes here unfortunately I I I think I interpret it as the second one like I I definitely read this a few times because it is very vague and I I think the Dodgers are in there for a reason and and we’ll kind of get into all this but I don’t think it’s as simple as these are the teams that are interested in and these are also the teams yeah that have made $600 million offers like I I feel like the wording would have been different if that was the case like it would have specifically said these are the teams that have made the offers so um that in in this business you get a lot of vague reports like that that may or may not be anything so um I I don’t think you know I don’t think it’s fair to make that leap that the Dodgers you know have made that offer but I I do think we know the Dodgers are in the mix and and and we don’t know if they’re still in the mix but if they are still in the mix then I think that would imply that they have made that offer but I don’t think this specifically what you just read I don’t think we could totally just say yeah the Dodgers have made the $600 offer the the there’s two things that would have to happen for me to believe that the Dodgers are actually out on one sto either one stto signs with someone else or teoscar Hernandez signs with the Dodgers those are the two things that would tell me the Dodgers are out to me the fact that teoscar Hernandez is still a free agent tells me that the Dodgers are at least in the mix Daniel now in the mix could mean lots of things maybe they’ve made a smaller offer shorter years higher aav maybe it’s not a full $600 million offer but I’m choosing to believe and by the way he’s expected to sign by the end of the winter meetings which start on Sunday um he could sign sooner I mean anything could happen but basically in the next week and a half or so we’re expecting to have some resolution to this I I tend to believe the Dodgers are serious about Juan stto now are they as serious as Steve Cohen are they as desperate as the New York Yankees remains to be seen but from your point of view should the Dodgers be this serious this desperate so to speak for a guy like Juan stto I mean no they they definitely don’t need to be like you know this team is already you know by Far and Away the best in baseball right now and of course Juan sto is a great player but they’re not they’re definitely not as desperate as any of the other teams you know involved here like if the Dodgers don’t get Juan stto like they’ll be just fine like let’s be real here all these other teams basically need Juan stto to to be you know World Series contenders or whatever I know there’s a lot of other guys out there but there’s only one Juan stto so the Dodgers definitely aren’t as desperate as these other teams but as Andrew Freeman talked about you know at after the Blake Snell press conference like business is booming for the Dodgers right now like they got plenty of money and plenty of money to spend and if you are going to spend it Juan stto is Far and Away the best player out there so it makes sense that they’re they’re still in the mix here I will say like you know it when you’re looking at this from Juan stto and Scott boris’s perspective they’re going to want the Dodgers just in the mix until the very end because that’s only going to help them get the deal that they’re looking for like if teams like the Yankees and the Mets see that hey Juan stto might end up with the Dodgers maybe they’re GNA kick in an extra 20 30 million on top of whatever is already quot unquote their highest offer so so I I do think until there’s any sort of resolution here like the Dodgers name is going to be in these reports just because the Dodgers name is in every you know report and and that helps free agents you know get what they’re looking for from other teams and whatnot um and with the teoscar thing I honestly I don’t think that’s all that related it is in the sense that they’re both outfielders but I also think it makes sense for teoscar to wait out yeah wano see where he lands just because Wan stto could only go to one place and there’s five suitors or whatever so whoever doesn’t get woto maybe they’re willing to pay more for teoscar so unless the Dodgers are you know approaching teoscar with like a like a a great offer that he can’t turn down like it makes sense for him to wait out juano I think right now it’s just kind of a wait and see like the Dodgers are in it but I still think they’re huge long shot for wano I think these other teams just have way more motivation you know to get it and offer even more so um you know as much as I I we would all love to see wot and well not all of us there actually is a large portion of the fan base that doesn’t want it but I I don’t think anyone could deny the talent and and that he would make the Dodgers a better team um but but I I just think at the end of the day it’s still a long shot at least for me yeah and I want to talk real quick to the segment of the population that I’ve had a lot of interactions with on social media in our live chats on live videos and that kind of thing who are not interested in woto and we live in a world where you’re not really nobody changes their mind on a whole lot of things but with Juan stto I don’t know if I’ve done an adequate job of explaining just how special he is I’ve said I think he’s a special hitter he’s generational he’s going to be one of the best hitters of all time and so I want to say two things one is a lot of people point to like quote unquote off the field stuff Clubhouse issues please if that’s you post a link in the comments below like show me where you have found anything that tells me this guy’s a clubhouse cancer you may not might like his Antics like you may find him irritating or annoying there’s no report from any team that he has been on that he’s an issue that people don’t like that I know of show me below okay but as far as an offensive profile so baseball Savant I’ll just use percentiles here so 100 percentile means you’re the best in Major League Baseball at this thing zero percentile means you’re the worst so if if you’re in the 90th percentile or higher you’re in the top 10% of all major league hitters in a category okay for Juan sto there’s a couple numbers that jump out when you look at it since 2020 every single year for the past five years he has been the best in baseball at walk rate 100th percentile five consecutive year for for walk rate not surprised surprisingly if you look at Chase rate how often does he swing at pitches outside of the Zone 98th percenti 100th 100th 99th 998th okay so okay he takes walks what does that mean well a lot of times guys with that profile do they actually hit for power like are we talking about Luis Aras here who’s gonna hit for 300 have a high on base percentage no power here’s his expected slugging percentage 100th percentile 93rd 95th 95th 99th percentile last year uh he is basically the best in baseball at knowing whether a pitch is a strike or not and and Swinging if it’s a strike he’s also basically the best in baseball at when a pitch is a strike smashing it for contact oh by the way he literally just turned 26 this is the part I don’t think we talk enough about because most Major League baseballs you have to understand this do not even come up until they’re like 24 25 26 I was looking at some other guys sh Otani before he turned 26 okay and obviously he had only been at Major League Baseball for three years but for in the three years as a 23y old 24y old 25y old which is 2 20 in those three years he had 4.3 wins above replacement as an offensive player total before he turned 26 we’ve seen what Otani has done at the age of 27 28 29 stto is entering those years okay mookie bets same thing mookie bets actually had a great year as a 23-year-old but he’s kind of the outlier Freddy Freeman Freddy Freeman came up as a 20-year-old but if you look at the seasons he had between age 20 and age 25 like his best season was a five wins above replacement season last one Aaron judge is the most interesting to me okay Aaron judge had one great season early in his career uh he hit 52 home runs he didn’t even come up until he was 24 his first full Major League season was at 25 he hit 52 home runs he waited until age 30 to have the 62 home run season so when the Dodgers talk about signing Juan stoto here’s what you’re getting you’re getting arguably one of the best if three hitters probably I think it’s Otani it’s judge and it’s stto the three best hitters in baseball right now but there’s one of those guys who just turned 26 and that’s Juan sto and you’re getting him for the entirety of his Prime and then some I know the defensive concerns but to me Daniel that’s why I look at this and I’m like he is a generational player I the 600 sounds crazy I’d give it to him I’d give it to him I wouldn’t blink is there a number that’s too high maybe how much are the deferrals whatever like we are talking about a guy who is going to be maybe one of the 10 best hitters of all time in major league history when this is all said and done yeah I mean you you broke it down pretty well and I I think the age is the biggest part because a lot of the times when these guys get to free agency they’re they’re 30 years old and they’re most guys at 30 their best years are behind them already and you’re hoping to get three or four good years at the beginning of that contract and then the rest of it you know you’ll you’ll just eat it or whatever but the thing about with Juan stto as you just mentioned it he’s 25 about to be 26 that means that his best years are still kind of ahead of him like in in theory of course who knows he’s had some great years already so it’s going to be hard to top some of them especially this past year but you know you’re it’s not like you’re going to get this guy and and and he’s going to start declining in three or four years like this guy will have 10 prime years left in him and then you know maybe once he turns 35 36 he starts to decline but um he’s still got a lot of good baseball ahead of him and like when you just think of what the Dodgers lineup would look like with him in it like it’s pretty it’s pretty insane like that you know that they would score so many runs and I I know like in theory if you’re giving all that money to wotto you wouldn’t be able to address other needs like you you know maybe you wouldn’t be able to go get another starter or you wouldn’t be able to go get a short stop or or whatever the case may be but at the end of the day you’re going to have a one through four of all Hall of Famers you know a five through nine of really good you know baseball players and then with with the addition of Blake snow like a starting rotation that has the top end talent and you know some younger depth that that you know if guys get hurt as we know they will like you know you could go to Justin roesy and Landon Knack and they could get outs for you especially when you’re scoring eight nine runs every single game because you have Juan stto In addition to all the other guys you have so um you know like that that’s why I don’t think there’s a number that’s too high just because this is the Dodgers we’re talking about like yeah like I was just saying before Andrew freman you know talked the other day about how they’re basically printing money like which makes sense because when you got sh Otani that’s like its own economy in itself and then yeah you got all these other stars you just won a World Series you’re you’re breaking merchandise records and and of course if you sign Juan sto like that’s you’re gonna sell you know plenty of jerseys doing that as as well so I don’t think money is any sort of issue so um you know we know the Dodgers are are aggressive and and they want to go out and build the best team possible like Andrew fredman basically said like the goal is to have the team in plays by February and not have to go out and buy at the deadline next year um so they’re going to be aggressive they’re in the mix like like I’ve been saying at the end of the day I do not think they get Wan sto like yeah you know feel free to surprise me I but I just don’t think it’s happening but I I do think they’re going to be in the mix till the very end just because that’s what the Dodgers do we’ve seen that with basically every Star they haven’t gotten like they’ve been in the mix at least and and some guys they’ve gotten and it’s worked out and others they haven’t but like like like you you broke it down like guys like Juan stto don’t become free agents very often period let alone at his age you know with the career he’s already built for himself so I I do think he’s deserving of whatever contract he’s gonna get um we’ll see if it’s the Dodgers I still Le know but I I do think if it comes to fruition like I I don’t think anyone should look at that as like a bad move yeah you know like you’re adding a Hall of Fame player so it is it’s a fun debate to have just because like we’re we’re very spoiled as Dodger fans like you know no one else could really have this debate given all the other recent moves they’ve made but when you’re the Dodgers you’re just in on everybody yeah and I want to make clear a lot of these guys when they sign free agent deals like Aaron judge signed a nine-year contract going into his I believe it was his age 31 season um so like that’s going to take him through the age 40 which it’s like how’s that going to age show hey Otani same kind of thing late 30s into 40 but like again it sucks to pay for years 36 through 40 and most of these contracts a if I’m going to bet on a profile being fine at age 36 37 it’s the guy who has an incredible eye doesn’t Chase and walks a lot like that’s what I want not a guy that’s relying on you know super superum power and speed necessarily but also if I’m going to pay for 36 through 40 I also want to be able to pay for 26 through 30 those are the five years that most of the time you miss in free agent contracts that’s what you would get with one Soo I do want to say this what makes it so hard in this conversation is the fact that knowing that if the Dodgers get one sto it’s going to cost them almost assuredly teoscar Hernandez who’s incredible incredible teammate contributed in really meaningful ways to a World Series CAD clutch hits knocked in a bunch of runs so like I think that’s the hardest part for a lot of people Daniel with this conversation is it it feels like you have to pick aide whether you’re on Juan sto’s side or teoscar Hernandez side and I hate that because I want to be on both guys sides Juan stto is sort of the exception like there’s a reason we’re not up here hyping up Anthony santand there as like a guy because look if it’s close give me T Oscar every single day of the week the point I’m trying to make is the reason anybody is even pining for Juan sto is because as much as we love teoscar Hernandez to quote my friend Daniel starkin with all due respect to teoscar Hernandez he is not Wan stto he is older he is less productive and he is equally as bad of a fielder in the Outfield and so I think that’s why this is is hard for a lot of people not so much they don’t like wano maybe they’ve talked themselves into not liking wano in part because they love teoscar so much and they know they can’t have both sure and and you could look at a similar type of situation on the pitching side where yeah the Dodgers might lose Walker ber now because they went out and gave all that money to Blake snow and like if that happens and the Dodgers don’t resign Walker ber we’re all gonna be super bummed about it like that’s going to be like he’s kind of you know our guy since since he’s came up through through organization so teoscar doesn’t even have that like he we fell in love with him over one year which credit to him it it was a hell of a year but yeah you know I don’t think anyone is sitting here saying you know the Dodgers shouldn’t have signed Blake Snell because they might lose Walker ber because of it and again we all absolutely love Walker and we still hope he comes back but at the end of the day we want the guy we want the best players like that’s that’s what the Dodgers are interested in they’re always shopping at the top of the market and and that’s what they’re doing here again yeah so stay tuned to Dodger bl.com stay tuned to this channel because as soon as there is news on onean sto one way or the other uh we will have it for you so you’re you’re predicting he does not come to the Dodgers are you predicting Yankees I think the Mets I think the Mets I don’t know why I just think like they’re gonna have the biggest offer and and if you look at like if the basically if the Yankees resign Juan sto like their offseason like they’re not going to be able to make many more moves their payrolls are already pretty high yeah whereas if you look at the Mets payroll they could go out and do whatever they could sign Juan stto Corbin burns petzo like they have a lot of moves to make so that’s why I think that that will be kind of appealing to Juan stto um and they could they could have offer the most money like let’s be real here like I don’t think he might not choose the Mets but I don’t think anyone’s gonna outbid the Mets here yeah yeah and look if you’re Steve Cohen like what better than stealing away the Yankees you know oh yeah second best player I guess you could say but it’d be a nice it’d be a nice thing for him in New York as well let us know what you think in the comments below give us a prediction of where Wan stto lands and talk us through where you’re at on this whole thing that is
