this game but they’ve got some fight in them and we’re going to break down the matchup on today’s episode thank you guys so much for tuning in if you have not subscribed to the YouTube channel or the podcast feed I would greatly appreciate it if you did so today’s episode is brought to you by game time you can download the game time app create an account use code locked on college for $20 off your first purchase all right let’s go ahead and get into it Kentucky basketball taking on Ohio State this is how we like to do our previews we like to talk about what we know about the opposing team their head coach what they’ve done so far this season talk about the positives you know who are some Big Time Players how have they operated on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball and then we’re going to get into the negatives why have they struggled in certain areas what have some of the losses looked like for them with this Ohio State team it’s actually really fascinating they’re seven and four right now and they’ve lost all of their games pretty much in different ways and then we’ll break down in the final segment we’ll give our predictions we’ll give uh maybe some important keys to the game I’ve got a lot here today and let’s go ahead and dive into it Ohio State like I mentioned seven and four right now they are ranked number 38 uh in the country according to kenpom this is still despite being seven and four a very solid basketball team I want to get that out here immediately Kentucky is not going up against a team that is about to lie down tomorrow they’re not going up against a team that is going to completely give up yes they got blown out against Auburn but it was Auburn and I think that most of what happened in that game was matchup specific I don’t think you’re going to see Kentucky uh replicate some of the things that Auburn did of course at the same time I don’t know if there’s some things that Auburn does that they or Auburn doesn’t necessarily have the ability to do kind of some of the things that Kentucky is going to try out in this game but head coaching wise it’s a very interesting situation right now for the Buckey they’ve got Jake debler who was an interim for them last season he was seven and five as an interim and they hired him at the end of the season decided to keep him despite him never being a division one head coach before you heard me correctly he was previously an assistant at Val and then at Vanderbilt never been a D1 head coach ever if you go look at his Wikipedia page it’s actually pretty funny it’s just like assistant assistant assistant assistant assistant Ohio State assistant and look he’s a head coach now and the thing about about debler is it looks like Ohio state has made the right decision here at least in terms of head coach because this offense and numbers wise what Ohio State likes to do is actually pretty solid despite him having to kind of just mesh a bunch of pieces together and everything being a little weird Ohio state is able to find success and it may not necessarily be in the win loss column but they’ve done some pretty impressive things so far this season first and foremost they’ve got one of the best shooting teams in the nation right now Ohio state is shooting a little over 40% from three that’s good for 11th nationally and it’s not just one guy that can stroke it from outside the ark they’ve got multiple players here that or not just good three-point Shooters but like incredible three-point Shooters they play with decent Tempo at times on the offensive side of the ball as well they also shoot pretty solidly inside the ark they are a pretty interesting squad on that side and again it’s a hodgepodge a cast of characters if you will from the transfer portal that have all kind of meshed together here in order to put together one of the better offenses it looks like in the Big 10 they’re averaging over 80 points a game right now and they’ve got multiple guys not just scoring in double figures but scoring 12 plus points per game we’re going to highlight three of them here in just a second but the big thing that they’ve been able to do in some of these big time matchups is they have been able to score the ball now yes they were not able to score the ball against Auburn they weren’t able to score the ball against Maryland but against teams like Texas against teams like Rutgers they were able to go out there and they were able to put some points on the board they scored 80 in their season opener against the Longhorns at a neutral sight they won that game they scored 80 and a win at home against Rutgers to open up Big 10 or excuse me to open up home Big 10 play uh Rutgers by the way with two incredibly gifted guards uh and Ace Bailey who has just been phenomenal and Dylan Harper as well this Ohio State team they’ve done some positive things right and they’ve got three guys here that I really want to highlight for a second they’ve got their leading scorer Devon Royal who is a very effective inside scorer despite only being I believe 6 foot6 220 lbs he is somebody that’s going to play a little bit of the four for them or excuse me mostly the four for them a little bit of the five despite being again 6’6 this is not an incredibly tall team Royal right now shooting 69.7% from inside the arc only 21% from outside but he has taken some threes which is something that Kentucky needs to be aware of of because Kentucky doesn’t switch a lot I don’t know if you’ve noticed that they don’t really like to switch or over complicate things on the defensive end of the floor they’re essentially playing man or Zone and you are assigned to your zone or your man and you’re not trying to rotate over or help there’s not a ton of help defense and so sometimes that will lead things like forwards wide open at the top of the key to take threes if Clemson had executed better in that spot they could have won by won by 12 against Kentucky but I believe shefflin missed a few threes just right wide open at the top of the key um but guys like Royal are some people or or or is a matchup that I’m concerned about because of the fact that he has the ability to step outside he also has the ability to handle the ball now he’s got some really go good guards around him that can distribute to him and get him touches in the paint which we’ll discuss later on in the show about how important the front Court’s going to be for both these two teams but Royal incredibly effective Bruce Thorton is an insane three-point shooter he is currently the starting point guard me Johnson South Carolina transfer was playing splitting time with him in the back court along John Mobley who we’ll get to in just a second but Johnson has taken a leave of absence from the Ohio State program another player a big- Time transfer portal Edition that’s just simply not going to be playing uh tomorrow he didn’t play well against Auburn he didn’t play against Val um Ohio State still won that game by I believe 20 plus Thorton though so far this season excellent three-point shooter 48.7% from Beyond The Arc he’s shooting 54.8% from inside he’s a near 80% uh foul line shooter he’s almost top 100 in the nation in assist rate he’s top 50 in the nation in offensive rating overall he is their lead Junior guard who again has just been phenomenal you talk about the different transfer portal additions for Ohio State this is a guy that’s been in the program for three straight years that has been able to provide them some really really solid minutes and he’s going to be their lead guard in this game he’s going to be the guy that’s matching up against Lamont Butler and frankly it’s a concerning matchup because yes Butler is very good but at the same time what what do you do against Thorton in his three-point shooting and if it’s not Thorton it’s going to be John Mobley who is even more insane shooting 30 of 56 from three that is 53.6% and he is a more of a volume guy from outside way less efficient inside as a freshman but he is a confident confident three-point shooter that can that can take it and hit it from Deep you see him doing that against Pittsburgh earlier this season he is a really really solid another great scoring threat that has been insanely efficient so far this season so it’s Royal it’s thoron it’s Mobly and there’s a sort of a drop off after that because you start to kind of get into the depth here and there’s not much to be had we’ll dive into some of the negatives and how Ohio state has exactly lost despite having one of the best offenses in the nation so far this season before we get into that though I do want to tell you guys about our friends over at Rocket money did rocket money help you find any subscriptions that you checking out the show today if you have not subscribed to the YouTube channel or the podcast feed I would greatly appreciate it if you did so previewing Kentucky basketball’s match up with Ohio State so we’ve talked about what this team does well analytically they’re they’re pretty solid in a lot of different areas despite we’ll go ahead and get into the negatives here now being incredibly short-handed this team at the start of the season if I’m not mistaken was in essence a ninan rotation you actually had former Kentucky Wildcat Aaron Bradshaw playing in the at the beginning of the season and starting uh at the beginning of the season but since then Bradshaw uh has been removed for a variety of reasons that we won’t get into I’ve seen some reports that he might play tomorrow I don’t think he’s going to if he does I’m curious to see how important his impact is especially matchup wise against ky’s front Court I don’t think it’ll be substantial but we’ll see um hope he’s doing I hope he’s doing okay I I hate to see uh some of the things that have come out and just the frustration surrounding it but you’ve got the uh you’ve got him uh who has been removed from the program at least for the time being and then you’ve also got Mei Johnson who has taken a leave of absent so you’re essentially playing now with seven different players in your rotation and the fascinating thing about Ohio state is because they’ve kind of had to group all these guys together and you’ve kind of had to make a weird starting five at least relative to the start of the Season essentially all of their contributors are incredibly balanced like you don’t see one guy taking a ton of shots compared to another player if you want to go look at kenpom their top six contributors are all significant contributors meaning they are used on 20 to 24% of possessions and almost every single player here is within half a percentage point of each other Thorton parish and Johnson are all within 3% of each other in terms of possessions used same with Shawn Stewart who has now had to step up and start he is the transfer from duke we talked about him earlier this offseason um he’s playing okay he’s not playing phenomenally and he’s had to step up with Aaron Bradshaw out and he’s not been great but he’s been serviceable um Mei Johnson is in this group of significant contributors but again he’s out now um so you’re starting five is pretty much what you have here and the next biggest contributor is Aaron Bradshaw who again is out so you’re having to maybe dig a little bit deeper with Austin Parks with Evan mahy I believe or maafi I don’t know how you pronounce his name it’s m a a f f y I think that’s I we we’ll call him I don’t know just we’ll call him Evan because I don’t want to look like that much of an idiot and to be honest with you I watched the uh the A&M the pit the Maryland and the Auburn games and I did not hear his name called maybe that was just me not paying that much of attention uh anyway incredibly short-handed team at least relative to where they were at the start of the year they are also seven and four despite having some good numbers and you will see teams like this throughout the course of the Year you’ll probably see a lot of these teams in the SEC Kentucky could end up being one of these teams where they have a chunk of losses but analytically Evan Mia HLA tvic kenpom they all essent net rating all essentially say hey this is still a very good team they’ve got they’ve got a high ceiling at the same time they’re seven and four and some of the teams that they’ve lost to are equivalent to Kentucky at least in terms of quality of opponent the fact that this is happening happening at a neutral site is huge I think the fact that it’s happening at MSG is also just another point in ky’s corner just because of the fact that I think they’re going to have a strong presence there at least in terms of fan base I think Mark Pope’s going to love it for the obvious reasons him being a former New York Nick this is a weird spot for OSU against it’s a team they’ve in essence faced before but at the same time they’ve not faced a team like Kentucky yet again they’ve already lost four games but all in different ways and I want to kind of break this down here for you so their first loss to the season was in their third game of the year against Texas A&M it was on the road they lost 78 to 64 in essence the loss came down to a poor three-point shooting performance and the fact that A&M took 43 uh free throws I I think they made 32 so you put your opponent on the line way too much and you couldn’t hit an outside shot that is the first game right Texas A&M as it stands is number 18 in the country Kentucky is 12th in terms of like Kim pom pit they lost at home in Columbus to Pittsburgh they lost 91 to 90 in overtime this was a great shooting performance 50 plus per from both two and from three but they choked a lead in the second half and they played really bad defense in overtime uh they lost 91 to 90 was tied 7777 at the at the uh end of regulation Ohio state had a chance to win it but couldn’t uh get something going with royal at the end of the game was which is a shame because it looked like a decent place to go so they lost that game they choked that game against Maryland they went on the road to open up Big 10 play they lost that game to number 16 Maryland again on kmom 83 to 59 they got worked why did they get worked well it was a poor shooting performance again they turned the ball over a lot which is something that Maryland does to their opponents just Maryland I went and looked and I had to go watch Maryland a little bit they’ve got one of the best defenses I’ve seen that’s that’s a good defense and a good enough offense to Make Some Noise man they they have potential they got blown out by the turps and then against Auburn 91 to 53 was the final score in Atlanta neutral site why’ they lose to Auburn well it was very poor Rim shooting sub 38% and they got worked on the glass absolutely worked which is what Auburn’s going to do to you it’s what Maryland’s going to do to you it’s funny because A&M is like one of the best offensive rebounding teams of the nation and that was not a major part of the uh of the the loss there for OSU it was more just about the fact that you couldn’t hit from three and you put the opponent on the line so you’ve lost four games in a iety of ways so the numbers say one thing the ey test says another about how you do you still have flaws and I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that this is a a team that’s learning how to play with each other still you have a lot of guys here that are from other other uh other programs sea Stewart’s from duke Mei Johnson from South Carolina you’ve got all these different players here uh that are just trying to figure out how to make it work with some guys from Ohio State that have been here a while with the head coach that is learning how to do this I think essentially as he’s got the job so you have weaknesses clearly you’ve had you have two decent wins you’ve got the one quad one win against Texas to begin the year you’ve lost all four other quad One games ruers wasn’t even a quad two game by the way I just want to throw that out there you’re not incredibly tall on top of all of this you’re 226th in height Shawn Stewart is 69 220 unless they just want to Chuck out Austin Parks who’s a 610 260 sophomore unless they just want to throw him out there um they don’t have a lot of great options at Center and to be honest with you I don’t know if he’s going to be the most effective option against Kentucky he also just simply hasn’t played a lot this year he’s only taken 13 shots shots so your option is Shawn or Devin Royal who is 66 against the Kentucky front court that can handle the ball that can score at The Rim that can not just not just handle and score but they can pass see where we’re going with this it’s very important I believe that Kentucky executes in the front court and I’ll dive into more of the specifics here in just a minute before I do that though I do want to tell you guys about our friends over at the college football playoff that’s right it’s that time of the year and the college football playoff is back and with the newly expanded 12 team format it’s guaranteed to be bigger and better than ever bringing you all the hard- hitting and highflying excitement that you love TNT Sports coverage of the college football playoff begins December 21st starting with the college football playoff kickoff show presented by AT&T at 11:00 a.m. eastern leading into our first matchup between the SMU Mustangs battling the Pinn State nney lions at noon then the Clemson Tigers look to upset the Texas Longhorns and a showdown at 400 p.m. Eastern and you don’t want to miss a moment of the action you can watch the college football playoff presented by All State live on TNT True TV TBS and Max all right wrapping up Kentucky versus Ohio State previewing this matchup in Madison Square Garden I’ve got four major keys to the game here four major Keys one of them we’ve already talked about before but I’m going to throw it out there again cuz it’s going to hit at some point starting off here with what I was just kind of hinting at not hinting at I straight up said it um if your bigs can hand handle the ball and finish it’ll be huge for the rest of your offense in this game huge go and watch how Auburn dismantled Ohio State Janai broom obviously best player in the country right now uh has discovered an ability to handle the ball and drive to the rim instead of just being somebody that can work in the post or back back in on the post if Andrew Carr Amari Williams and maybe even Brandon Garrison if those three guys can figure out how to attack the rim and finish getting the ball from either outside of the ark or getting it from not not in the paint area where they have to back somebody down you’re going to have a good time Andrew Carr I think is going to be a massive player in this one he stepped up in all of other all of kuy’s other big games he’s shooting 62% right now from inside the arc you have to be able to get him some touches and ask him to say hey take some of these guys off the bounce and go finish at The Rim you’re bigger you’re taller you’re just as physical go go and get a bucket if you can do that it will open up the rest of your offense at that that point I really do hope Kentucky is somehow able to hit some of their outside shots in catch and shoot situations because they’ve just not been very good there this year they they’re not as good as they could be I’ll say that it’ll open up everything else and then on top of that I think you have to find ways to create fouls I think you got to get some points of the charity stripe in this game I think you have to get free throws you I don’t think you have to take four 40 like Texas A&M did but I think you have to get there and you have to try and get Ohio State into foul trouble again seven-man rotation see if you can take some of their guys out and I think you will put yourself in a good position those are the first two takeaways third takeaway you cannot give Ohio State more than they normally take what do I mean by that Ohio State like I mentioned is shooting over 40% from three which is very good but they only take 22 threes a game that is 222nd nationally volume is going to be important in this one you cannot give Ohio State more volume than they normally take what does that mean take away the three-point line essentially for Kentucky because they’re not going to slow the game down so on defense take away the three-point line make them go inside again your bigs crucial in this one you cannot let Royal finish effectively at the rim with him being four inches shorter than your your next best guy on on on defense 22 threes per game you cannot let them shoot like 34 you can’t you can’t you can’t let them shoot that much because they’re going to hit they’ve got guys that can hit and if they can they will and it will cause problems for the cats and the final key here I think this is going to be a big big thing for Kentucky you got to see a good game from Jackson Robinson man I’m going to keep saying it I’m going to keep saying it in these Big Time games you have to at some point get a good performance from Robinson and I don’t mean just like oh he shows up in the second half against Gonzaga I mean he is able to play well throughout the entirety of a game for 40 minutes Jackson Robinson gives you a good consistent game he does not finish three of 11 from the floor hits some free throws and hits a big three in the second half you need to see an efficient shooting performance paired with a good defensive performance I want to see a good game from Jackson Robinson if you get a good Jackson Robinson game I think you take this Victory obviously there are other ways that Kentucky could end up doing this but that’s one of the ones where I see okay if Robinson plays well then you’re probably going to have a very good chance to take it ky’s favorite win this game by four according to KP I think Kentucky ends up winning this game by a little bit more than that after getting to see Ohio State I know I said what I said earlier this week after seeing Ohio State I have more respect for them matchup wise I have more respect for their players I think they’re better than maybe I gave them credit for and I think this will be a competitive close game I think it will be a dog fight I think it will be what what whatever kind of fight you want to call it Rock dog whatever it is uh paper scissor it doesn’t matter they’re going to give Kentucky problems Handle With The Bigs open up your offense have J rob have a good game create some fouls Andrew Carr what are you doing that’s my prediction I think Kentucky wins by six or seven probably that’s going to do it for today’s episode of Locked on Kentucky you can follow the show on Twitter at lock onuk can follow me on Twitter at Lanore and you can follow the show over on
