I hope that they’re not dependent on their offense to establish things because if they are that’s not a good start the defense is definitely where they need to start to turn things around and you know giving up extra possessions offensive rebounds things of that nature and the giving up the three ball a lot of them uncontested meanwhile being stagnant on your offensive end and not having the same Synergy and flow that you’ve had had in previous games is is a is a loser and it’s you know you get no morale you get no excitement on either end because you’re not connecting meanwhile uh Phoenix is just you know doing what they do best with Booker and Durant and nurkic got going and uh they start looking for mismatches so I I just think it’s you know it’s it’s something up here it’s not connecting and that’s physically you got to go out and play the game that kind of points to what you said in the pregame when you look at a drop off like that like we saw they were up plus six on Denver Saturday going into the third quarter tonight you’re you’re down two but it’s a great game and you talked about the mental side in the pregame yeah there and and you’re not always aware of it in the moment but there there’s something that isn’t quite like as they come out of the locker room they’re on the bench they’re out on the court warming up there isn’t a whatever that Collective feel is to start the game there’s just a bit of a gap there and and it doesn’t mean there’s there’s a strategy that’s wrong or um that somebody needs to try and do something different by themselves but just collectively as a group deciding okay to start this third quarter what are we going to hang our hats on tonight right that let’s you know what this first three minutes and I’m sure the coaches are saying this the first three or four minutes of this third quarter let’s let’s try to get you know let’s try to get two kills right that’s three stops in a row let’s let’s try to you know keep them from scoring more than six points in transition whatever it is that’ll give them a Collective common goal as opposed to just starting the third quarter and it’s just five guys out there as opposed to like no we’re going to be a formidable opponent together so it happens during the course of a long season um they can get it back uh but it it needs to happen sooner rather than later just so that you don’t get that snowball effect of not just poor performance and and results of losses but then all of the noise and the external things things and the narrative starts to get heavier and then it makes it harder for guys to just enjoy playing the game the right way and what JJ talked about before the game is getting back to the process and not being so tied to results well that’s hard to do when it’s really loud with negativity you know that and that just automatically comes with losing at this level do you finish that might be the first Narrative of the Season excuse me I think you hit on it last year we had a couple narratives ad in the fourth quarter not so hot at points he kind of got forgotten uh this is the first negative Narrative of the Season that one4 road trip not withstanding this the third quarter the last two this team has shot 27% that’s not from three-point range that’s overall in the third quarter three-point range was about 20 21% bottom line you got to fixes third quarter you do not want that to be a negative narrative at all and right now it is for short by the way one last thing if you’re saying okay these last two third quarters not so good James is that because Dalton connect is no longer starting if you go back three games they were pretty bad in that third quarter against Orlando only 21 points in that quarter and shot poorly as well so I don’t know what the answer is it’s it’s puzzling could be a little bit of mental could be a little physical and JJ reick did put the the team through a pretty tough practice yesterday he said look we did not show up the play in that third quarter against Denver a couple games ago we’re going have a hard practice obviously that that didn’t work out too well either today Ali obviously it’s pretty glaring especially when you you look at just the offense particularly in the third quarter of the last two as we’ve been talking about but if you’re not going to get stops it’s not going to matter at all how good or not good your offense is and big game you mentioned it I hope they’re not tied to just their offense uh because a way that you can work yourself out of this obviously is figuring out things defensively and I kind of want to go there because before Kevin Durant went down the suns were 11th in offensive rating they’re not even a top 10 they’re middle of the pack currently as it stands right there it’s not that they’re a top five a top 10 offensive team now they are great scorers obviously they excuse me Kevin Durant Bradley Beal Deon Booker they did their thing tonight but when it comes to the defense and trying to figure out who you are we talked about it yesterday in the show because JJ had a competitive spirited practice it was a big thing that came out of the practice court yesterday Austin Reeves talking about maybe not being the best defensive Personnel team that they have right now but trying to turn things around maybe buying in a little bit more from a physical standpoint when you’re trying to figure out that into the floor where does it start fish um I mean personnel has something to do with it in terms of like the ability to do certain things and and yeah I wouldn’t say the team is an elite defensive team whether on paper or maybe by Personnel but I I don’t think that’s changed overnight per se and so this is part of being in the west you know where I mean it I think we can and this is just me without the poor law to Orlando I just think it all feels different tonight even with this loss like if you lose to a motivated nuggets team and a son’s team that just returned Kevin Durant and Bradley Bill uh okay maybe it doesn’t feel so bad but that lost to Orlando where I I was tracking the box score playby playay and I just I closed my iPad and I went upstairs I thought the game was over and the next afternoon somebody was joking with me about oh man your Lakers you know lost last night or and I I couldn’t believe it and then that snowballs into a nuggets loss now into a son’s loss and and so three games in a row starts to feel heavy but that defensive mindset all the great teams have it there nobody wins a title um just playing offense and so the Lakers do need to figure out with all that being said how to start the third quarter focus more on the defensive end than anything else I agree 1,000% can’t say it much better than that I mean look sometimes it when you get shocked like they have been especially like he said that Orlando game was a shocker you kind of know what to do you’ve been told what to do but you’re waiting for it to happen whereas you know as a team you got to talk to one another and go out and make it happen sometimes you can go out and you can be playing a game waiting for something happen and before you know it you’re turning it over you’re giving up offensive rebounds I just it’s just hard to understand how they’re coming out in the third quarter that’s something that just I I can’t get a grip on right now yeah a little bit of big picture F uh this is the first of five games in seven days that’s a lot of basketball they got to play in San Antonio tomorrow they’re getting on the flight within an hour or so then they come back home they play a quick game they go back out for another road back to back so not the way you want to start five five games in seven days um yeah I I we it’s weird we don’t have really really the answers because I I haven’t seen two third quarters stacked up like this in a while allly it’s true I think we continue you mentioned that shock value of kind of how things went on Thursday versus Orlando you kind of lean into what JJ said yesterday it’s kind of an aberration he doesn’t feel and you got to look at the schedule before that as he mentioned this team has found variety of ways to win games they’ve shown that they can do it that it hasn’t always been easy there’s been adversity throughout games to start this season see if they can turn it around I do need you my friend our lakeer Insider to break down what this all means in terms of cup play because obviously this was a cup game tonight Lakers return home after facing San Antonio tomorrow for the thunder on Friday there’s a couple of teams though two and one right now and this is where the point differential will come into play exactly allly and you know we were talking about it while in the conference room where we watch the games why is KD still out there four minutes left how about LeBron and AD this little little nasty phrase called Point differential it’s the big tiebreaker for the NBA cup then what they have to do is is be really really good in point differential among all the other teams that did not win their pool and when you lose uh by almost 30 like they did tonight it’s going to be difficult to do I was going to say you make it really tough on yourself I guess I bet there’s one guy that doesn’t care about Point differential right now though we’re GNA go back to Phoenix and hear from him JJ reck he’s speaking with Mike trell on the media JJ first just kind of open-ended curious your your overall take on the game yeah um really liked how we played offensively in the first half um defensively we were physical um had a couple you know I would call them game plan mistakes um you know I thought we had a better first half than than the score um just kind of lost it offensively and W you know we weren’t getting stops on top of that and um you get down and you know there’s there’s certainly um there certainly could be some momentum and some energy but you know I thought our guys kept playing and uh know what we were seven for 26 in the second half I think from three thought we got good looks but you know sometimes the the Miss shots can sort of have an effect especially if you’re not getting stops on the other end and look we we we may have to just look at some things defensively um particularly against really good offensive teams about you know what our overall sort of strategies are um they kind of kind of got whatever they wanted um they their main players got to their spots and hit tough twos which they do and they still took 42 threes you know so you you mentioned the kind of the the third quarter in the Denver game third quarter is a similar margin did you see any similar Spirits no our guys kep playing our guys kept playing it’s tough night uh you have any information on Jackson Hayes I have not received any yet uh we talked about this at the last game and you know I guess maybe it’s not the same um kind of looks different defense all that stuff but LeBron had high turnover volume again tonight um was there any of the same reasons tonight that you’ve seen in some of these other games um no um you know I don’t I maybe remember maybe one or two I know one for sure that hit Jackson uh in the face but I think we converted once on nine transition opportunities some of that was we we were we weren’t getting a ton of stops but I think just overall um we’ve we’ve been great in transition throughout the year not good tonight not good tonight that’s you that’s not just LeBron that’s that’s everybody JJ you mentioned that after tonight you may you guys may have to reconsider look back over your defensive strategies um I guess in real time because not just tonight it’s been the past few games the defense hasn’t performed at a high level what I guess have you seen slip even more recently or do you think just on right now that needs to be looked at that yeah I I would say the if you think about um being disruptive I think it starts there and some of it is like you know Personnel based and you know we don’t we don’t necessarily have a ton of guys that can go and pick up full court but you know teams are trying to disrupt what we do just like we’re trying to disrupt what other teams are doing um and and you know whether that’s um with screening action or dhos whatever it may be um so I think I think we can be better there um we can be better executing game plan but look I mean sometimes against a team like this against a player like joic you can game plan all you want but great great players are are going to be great sometimes and you know their their three guys were great tonight and yic was great the other night JJ um you said you thought your guys competitive Spirit um was still there in the third quarter but I guess in what ways did you see the the was it more the offense bleeding into the defense did you see or or feel I guess this is probably more um abstract but like did you feel the defense they a bad offense the offense bad offense leading to bad defense all intertwined the um at the end of that quarter I think tyus Jones had a um uncontested layup at the end of the first quarter Grayson Allen gets an uncontested three are are those some of the kind of like game plan just sort of like lapses that you know when you guys are already sort of fighting uphill on that side of the ball you don’t you don’t want to give up uncontested shots obviously that’s you’re not there’s nobody that they have on their roster that you’re just like ignoring um you know I’d have to go relook at those two plays but you know if you’re if you’re in rotation if you’re you know getting behind we didn’t do a great job in the first half with our um same size switches they made it tough you know they they they set the angle at a flat screen it it it’s tough um you know there’s a few teams that do that um so they got behind the defense there um Turned the corner once uh we didn’t execute our stack coverage uh a few times in that first half um so you know again you’re in rotation you’re you’re getting beat at the point of attack um sometimes that leads to those uncontested shots JJ you’ve been clear with the whole starter vers bench thing that that that’s more to you a designation rather than a role but Dalton had obviously been in a certain Rhythm before ruy had come back it have been five straight games double digits four straight games with double digit shot attempts these last couple games have been blowout so maybe that’s been a factor but single digit scoring single I think seven shot attempts in both games what what have you seen from him in terms of just his usage and and the looks he’s been getting and sort of how you guys can get him in a better R Rhythm excuse me yeah I thought I I thought he’s gotten some good looks um and maybe there is something to the flow that he can get to and the Rhythm he can get to if he’s a starter um you know like I said to you guys the other day I mean everything is is always up for discussion in our coaches meeting so we’ll look at everything hey coach excuse me uh coach JJ um you’ve seen the Suns from last year basically just starting off with this big three to this year this season what type of improvements have you seen them make like in the second year type of thing of course Bradley Bill is a little bit more healthier uh Durant coming back and then uh Booker you know doing his thing as well well they’re nine and one when those three guys play now so um I think we are the we are the only team to have beaten them and nearly beat them a second time um and those guys in the lineup they’re pretty darn good I don’t you know obviously they’re um doing a lot of a lot of good stuff offensively um they’re hard to guard than 27-point win for the Phoenix Suns 127 100 Anthony Davis 25 and 15 four blocks speaking of Austin he scored 10 of his 15 points in the second quarter he’s speaking with Mike in the locker room awesome JJ mentioned that he he liked some things in the first half the way you guys were getting shots I thought you know maybe the score didn’t totally reflect it but what did you see come third quarter as you know Phoenix pretty much controlled the whole period once again I just thought we were bad in the third quarter um there’s you know a lot to watch and clean up um you know shot selection taking care of the ball obviously the defensive end had to be more aggressive more physical um but I think honestly there’s a little bit of everything um you can do you know to be better does that compound the frustration for you just given the Denver loss and the way that game went yeah I mean anytime you lose it’s frustrating um but just not playing good is is frustrating uh you know you have to go back to the drawing board and figure out what it is to change or what you need to do to be better um and you know that’s what we’ll do when when JJ got the job he talked about process being more important and um how process eventually lead to good results um he said that again pregame tonight but when when you’re in it and you’re struggling how hard is it to stay big picture I mean in the moment um it’s as you’re competing it’s nearly impossible to think about the big picture when you’re getting your eyes kick um but when it’s all over you sit down you you think about it and you know we’re 10 and seven right now I believe and we’re still in a good spot so it’s not like you know we’re in a bad spot um and I think you know there’s probably three losses that we have that have been just bad and you know this one and the last one I think uh Detroit we didn’t play good either but uh when you in the moment it it sucks cuz I mean who wants to even think about the big pitchure in the moment you think about trying to win a game at that moment the nature of the way The Season’s gone so 3 and 0 then one and four then six in a row then 0 and three like how how has that kind of tested the stability uh of of your group kind of like Outlook wise I mean I think that just goes back to being processed you know oriented like um you know when things are going good they’re Obviously good you feel good that’s I mean anything in life you’re doing well at your job you’re happy soon as you hit a you know a little speed bump you’re frustrated and you you have to you know put your head down and figure out how to uh clean it up and and get back on those you know uh high high waves so uh you know that’s what we’re doing right now like I said um I think that’s why you bring in a system and you bring in a foundation to rely on um cuz if not then that’s what creates chaos so uh we’re not in that right now um we just have to you know be better uh tomorrow how much accountability has there been inside the locker when it comes to like playing physical and holding people to account when it’s been emphasized and you guys know what your defensive limitations are yeah I mean um I believe if you go around all everybody in the locker room they could they’ll tell you things that they could do better um and you need a group like that so uh you know I know there’s there’s many things I could do to help our team be more successful so uh you know I’ll take accountability there and I know everybody else in the locker room would do the same big picture on this desk as no matter how bad it may feel Austin kind of reminded us they’re still 10 and seven but the one thing listening to him I feel like after these losses he’s competitive these ones don’t sit well no he he he do like to to lose now you’re going to lose some some games but he’s not happy with how they’re losing third quarters are atrocious and they’re too good too experienced and you know uh know better uh so yeah it’s a fix that you know they they they have to they have to figure it out somehow it’s like a a virus they got a they they they they need a zpack yeah no doubt about it I mean I’ll tell you what I’ve talked to Austin after the last two games out here and he he was absolutely po you know he missed some free throws down the stretch against Orlando not happy about that uh you know the team loses by almost 30 I think it was 25 exactly to Denver and Austin at his locker was really upset about that too I give this guy a lot of credit you after LeBron and after ad and after JJ he’s turning into a got to go to him voice for this team because you just feel the fire defish you feel the irritation you know he signed his big contract a year ago he could just be chilling and and cruising but now that that’s not his character and you could tell he he kind of represents the The Angst of the Lakers right now especially when he mentioned that the third quarter he’s like you know this is this is tiring you know he he’s tired of it too believe me he feels that responsibility and it’s not just when they win games yeah yeah no it’s um I mean that’s the type of mindset you need from everyone in the room uh it’s not just LeBron or Anthony Davis or the head coach’s responsibility to bring that type of approach to the game like you’re just as responsible for the results that are tied to the process like you play a vital role in that so you can’t excuse yourself or try to look at the minutes or your shot attempts or lack of and say well you know it’s them that is causing what’s happening like you’re all in it together um I I think this group really likes each other a lot and and they aren’t going to um split apart but something definitely you know needs to shift and I think will shift um it’s just it’s it’s really more the dichotomy of first half second half like losing in the NBA is not the craziest thing in the world so it’s not we’re not lamenting the team on just losing I think it’s really the two differences between halves that we’re trying to diagnose from the outside um to try to figure out what the team can do uh to not be so different from from half to half it’s kind of what he said in the moment it’s really hard to see things big picture so you get a chance to step back take a look at it on film and figure it out get those Z packs LeBron we know every opponent is different every game is different third quarter is against Denver and Phoenix two different teams two different approaches did you see any through lines or any any concerns about the defense specifically in these consecutive games uh not not off the top of my head but obviously we give up too many points in the third and and we’re not scoring in a third so got a short short add up and I know you have to watch the tape but any any initial thoughts on that you just mentioned the offense and kind of that we know that goes and affects the defense as well what are anything you can Notice off the top no just both both um we’re not um very good defensively or or very good offensively last couple games uh in third JJ suggested that after an effort like this defensively him and his coaches have me to look at strategies of what you guys are doing defensively have you seen anything in terms of schemes that um you think could could be helped adjust it now whatever our whatever our um our scheme is for the game we got to go out and execute it you guys um have been pretty process oriented throughout this and you know the results have been mostly good um when when you guys are struggling like especially these last two games how hard is it to to stay both big picture but also committed to the systems and and and things that you’re trying to build now we are we are a process oriented team and we understand what you know that’s not going to happen overnight so you know you stay even kill you get too high and never get too well do you feel like that um in these last two games that the the stress of um of losing and struggling has taken you guys out of the stuff you wanted to do no I mean obviously throughout the course of the game you want to play better that’s I mean it’s that simple and then when you don’t you know obviously you get you know what can you do better you know you frustrated at times obviously um but you never get frustrated with the process um you know that that is what it is and you just keep working at it you’ve been self-critical with us about your turnover so far this season uh you did five tonight was more than your season average have you seeing something consistently that’s that’s causing them for you so far no I’m make trying to make the right play some of them is just not a good read some of them are um some of them you know I could be a little bit more you know um careful but at the end of the day I’m still trying to I’m trying to make winning play so I I don’t not a big deal for me that’s
