oh [Music] this episode of the Patriots postgame show is presented by DraftKings this is the Patriots postgame show presented by DraftKings first down more dive to the end zone touchdown Patriots join the conversation by calling into the TPX hotline at 855 ps500 or email the show at podcast patriots.com hand off to Stevenson runs left big hole across the 40 Cuts left hit the 45 and steamrolls the defender there live from our Studios inside Gillette Stadium here’s Matt Smith and we welcome you inside to Gillette Stadium uh where the Patriots have just lost a heartbreaker to the Indianapolis Colts by a score of 25 to 24 this is the Patriots postgame show presented by Draft Kings uh the Patriots now are 3 and 10 on the season and they are entering their bye and that’s going to be a tough one to swallow as they enter their bye um I’m not the stats guy but I think the Patriots dominated the stats for most of the game but the stat that’s going to count is with penalties a 21 playay drive that took 5 minutes and 22 seconds off the clock that capped off with a touchdown by the Colts their coach decided to go for it went for two they had the Patriots on the ropes good call they got the two and the Colts won the game 20 25- 24 Patriots had the ball back with 12 seconds and got in position to try to kick a 68 yd field goal if it had been 66 yards it might have been good because it was right on the money but it was short New England loses 25 to 24 and they’re three and 10 Paul pillo joins me on the postgame show uh presented by DraftKings initial analysis Please Mr Paul yeah I mean I caught um some of your uh synopsis there Matt and I would probably agree with the vast majority majority of what I heard um not a lot of bad stuff to talk about uh offensively today and not a lot of good stuff to talk about defensively today um the best defensive play the Patriots had was the other team dropping passes um but two on that final drive offensively um we’ll get to it when we do the lists they just got to find a way to finish off some of these drives and it’s it’s really becomeing and you can see it there’s a frustration level that you can actually visibly see on the players part they can’t finish the drives they’re leaving points on the field and you know you lose a one-point game and you and you have uh whatever it was were they one for five today um in the Red Zone um you just you can’t will two two for six maybe end up on the Gibson touchdown so um you just can’t you can’t leave that many points on the field and that’s ultimately the difference in the game is the other team was what three for three in the red zone three for four when they got down there they scored when the Patriots got down there not not only did they not only did Sly miss a 68 yard field goal which nobody’s going to knock him for missing that with a 25 Y which is he um was that the uh short field goal it broke the the the guy for the Rams who had the 26 yard Miss uh here a couple weeks ago but I mean overall there’s I mean I know people don’t want to hear about it and I wouldn’t want to hear about it either but just Drake may just continues to impress he was really good today and you wasted that effort by him today yeah so tough loss I mean in the grand scheme of things it’s not that big a deal to lose the game because of the season but you got to start you you made this point I think in the pregame and I think you’re right Matt you got to start having some success if you want to sort of get any semblance of uh you know a program going and you need to win games like this because it’s going to be a tough goodbye on Tuesday when they leave you know I mean um the latest buy possible is what the Patriots have along with the Colts and several other teams but if they could have held on to win this game or somehow find a way to score more points to win this game they go into that buy with a really good feeling and there’s you know maybe some hope to close out the season on a good note for the final four games this is a tough spot to be in here after that demoralizing um win and Gerard mayo and his staff have their work cutout form him coming up here you know to try to keep everybody on the same page because this was a tough way to lose a football game yeah I mean you have and I let me I go back to you know there’s a lot of different es and flows to games keys to games um one that’s probably not going to get much attention that should the Patriots offense today was borderline Unstoppable like they moved the ball um at will all day until they were up seven with the ball and five minutes left right and they went three and out for the only punt of the day and of course only punt of the day turns into a terrible punt by Bryce baringer who seemingly has one of these stinkers every week well today that was his only opportunity right um like I just it’s frustrating when you move the ball that well 23 first downs 422 yards of offense and yet you have the ball around the 40 yd line you good field position too and you can’t move it when you need to so that frustrating they pick up two yards on first down on that possession Paul bringing up second of Eight Second and eight and then I think they give it to Stevenson and they lost two on the play bringing up third and 10 which is not a great way to make a living although they picked up some third and Longs today and then I don’t know if it technically went for a sack but may was forced out and um and it counted as a sack and it was the quickest three and out and demoralizing after they had to your point had racked up yards the entire day you know no I I totally agree here’s a sequence in question and here’s the third down play you know and they lost yardage on that particular play and I mean they didn’t they couldn’t even take any clock off you know picking up one first down would have just helped immeasurably and they do nothing with the ball you get a couple of first downs you get a field goal you end the game right you know you get a two-score lead and the game’s over um but they couldn’t they couldn’t find a way to move the ball like I said when they had to and that that last Drive um we’ll get to some other things here too but I thought it was um thought it was odd that J Gerard Mayo chose not to use timeouts in the last minute too when the Colts you know get the ball first and goal you’re either going to get in or not right you’re not going to run out of time right you got four plays from inside the 10 you’re not running out of time right Colts had all their timeouts left they didn’t have them in a position where they had to rush you call a you call a couple timeouts there and maybe you have a minute uh you know at the end or you know 45 seconds instead of 12 seconds and you need a miracle 68 y so yeah I mean it’s it’s this is a frustrating one all around yeah Mike Doo joins us now um that was a tough one from a patriot perspective to see that ending Mike additional analysis just disappointed the defense you know had a chance had a chance I thought the offense you know some of the same problems continue to haunt them uh and maybe if they’d overcome all of them today that they probably would have won uh but I just don’t think there’s anything more frustrating than giving up that game-winning Drive especially where it took what 18 plays I mean it’s just I think 21 plays um uh if you include the penalties and that somebody’s got to step up somebody’s got to step up in that situation and uh you know I mean credit to them they I guess got lucky and had some drops that they didn’t give it up in one chunk it looked like that was almost going happen a couple times Le at least two where wide open receivers and guys dropped the ball so you thought they were going to get a reprieve um but they did not so I just I’m incredibly frustrated that the defense couldn’t just step up and make a play I don’t think the defense did a lot today they had a couple moments but they just they couldn’t Step Up in crunch time and and that’s why they didn’t win the game I mean really the defense did nothing today and I know the yards are going you’re going to look at these the stats here and say well 253 yards didn’t have the ball yeah yeah the Colts the the Colts only punted twice right and one of those punts was on a ridiculously Phantom offensive pass interference that negated a first down um so you know like Mike said 19 plays you had countless opportunities multiple fourth Downs this is not a sophisticated passing offense no um and you just couldn’t get off the field you couldn’t get off the field and they they ran it they threw it um and like I said Mike how much easier could it have been had they just caught a caught a pass or two I mean they had two long balls that were there yep um and the Patriots Defenders had nothing to do with uh not catching those either one of them well I think those plays just remind you that as close as you might think they are I mean there there’s still a ways to go for the defense I mean they’re they’re lucky they had a couple drops and and didn’t end it on a play like that um but I almost find this more frustrating where you’re just felt powerless this was a frustrating loss Mike away chipping away and you know a c it felt you know a little bit inevitable you know towards towards once they got past field it was like hon I never thought they were going to lose until they lost yeah no I gotta be honest I thought you know Colts I thought you know played better offensively than I thought but way worse defensively than I thought they would be and the Patriots offense was doing whatever it wanted I never I thought the Patriots are going to win not like a nod game or anything Fred Goes are you give the nod I’m like what are you high like like not even close and I I just I felt like they were going to win but it just in the end you know penalties Red Zone and can’t make a stop yep you know just the big plays you know how Bill used to always say all these games come down to you know a handful of plays the Colts made them all and the Patriots didn’t make any of them they counted you could you could package what you just said there penalties inability to get a stop in Red Zone and there’s your B that’s that’s your right 100% you know we can keep that analysis down just and leave it just towards that but we are contractually obligated to do The Good the Bad and the injured so let’s do it Matt now it’s time for the good pretty good pretty pretty pretty good the bad hey what happened and the injured you are a g all right uh Michael why don’t you lead us off uh with your good list please uh Drake May Drake May uh just some great throws from the pocket today that is what I loved uh couple to borne I just thought where from our vantage point you could almost see the window uh that he was thrown to I mean right there I think that was maybe the first throw of the game where you kind of knew he was on uh number that was a great throw number of third down throws today that were excellent uh I think the one towards uh the end of the game to Bourne where you just see May throwing to Windows throwing anticipatory to spots and that to me you know there was some of this on the run but it wasn’t the majority of it today I I thought the majority of it was you know in time certainly did some damage with his legs poor Hunter Henry G on that is that a penalty even though he’s a um even though he’s a runner I know but it looks like not in my league but I I mean I’ve seen it called okay yeah uh so yeah Drake May 100% for me I just I think that’s why I’m so disappointed is you know I just I thought he really showed a lot of poise today you know in some critical moments would have loved to seen them respond after the Gonzo we’ll get into that but you know that that’s one possession where it was a little disappointing but got into it you did a little bit already okay um but yeah just an outstanding day for Drake and and and I feel excited about him if we want to spend a little time here Bree a little bit yeah yeah he had a couple uh the other one at Hooper too um you know two two really good throws to the one on the inside to Hooper I didn’t love but that that throw was sick like that’s not a big window yeah um yeah I I would Echo everything Mike said I thought Drake may this was uh the best he’s he’s played um I I thought he was really on it and you I think you used the word anticipatory that’s a big word for me I didn’t go to Holy Cross five or six syllables um but I I think that perfectly encapsulates because we have like a good view of some of those and you can sort of look and see and like wow yeah that was the one that there second and 15 that went for 16 second and 15 16 yard I didn’t see the uh two-point play of booty um was that like you know one two out cuz that seemed quick I didn’t like that play at all okay I don’t like a play that’s designed not to get in the end zone on a two-point conversion uh they were fortunate on that I think he might have been short I think he might have been touched before he put the ball over the goal line on that but um the throw was excellent that’s the throw I think Mike’s talking about to anticipatory this is like unbelievable the guys Christen you like they’re going to have like 20 option I mean like he was really really good today he had a couple here and there um you know the the interception was really really bad luck and that was one of the throws that I would say was not quite where it was supposed to be it was to the inside it gave the linebacker a chance but I mean very few and far between he was really good today he had a couple bad throws but that’s all it was it was a couple of bad throw that throw right there he made he made Hooper work way too hard for that one on the inside on the ball that should have been out but I mean we nitpicking this is a guy he was really good B Man joins us and Fred will put a quick pause in The Good the Bad and the injur injured to get your um instant analysis my instant analysis is they missed the opportunity to take control of the game in the first half that I mean they not win it right but but take control and and they just couldn’t do it they you know with the penalties and yeah should have had a two-score lead and I would say um needed to be a little bit more aggressive on the play calling um just uh yeah they had a chance to take control of the game in the first half and they didn’t do it I agree with Fred that’s it all right thanks everybody is that how it works I never agree with Fred so I agree with Fred and it was just no one has anything else to say say something nice about Drake and call it a day no but I I you I know Mike started off with um with Drake May uh I would put the two tight ends um you know I think Henry and and and Hooper were really good again um those guys were let’s see targeted uh 13 times had 11 catches between them for Wow uh Henry had seven for 75 and Hooper four for 42 so what 117 yards uh in a touchdown those two guys have been really really good and not all the catches were easy catches you saw that the third down one early to to Henry on the outside beautiful coverage by the Colts Defender I think it was number 20 cross uh had his arm raped on across but Henry made the catch perfect ball placement by um May on the outside shoulder and then the touchdown to Henry again not I mean to Hooper not an easy throw or catch so I thought I I thought the two tight ends are really good had another good one on the sideline where was behind and he made Paul on one of the plays that everybody will be talking about is um the nont touchdown slash turnover when Henry couldn’t um come up with the ball at the goal line yeah that that was one of the bad throws that that I would put on on uh may but like literally I could maybe say two two or three today that I didn’t think were where they were supposed to be yep yep but this throw that throw if that’s on him or to the left of him he’s able to catch it and probably get in or at the very least he’s inside the one he throws it to the inside 44 I think is zier Franklin he’s able to sort of get involved in the play a little bit I don’t know if he got a piece of it he might have it’s obviously very bad luck that the ball up getting intercepted but see how that Ball’s inside of him and Franklin’s able to come over and bother Henry and this is a great play by the I think it’s Blackman Julian Blackman who makes the interception um very bad luck that it winds up a turnover it should have just been oh man that should have been a touchdown yeah 44 definitely swatted the ball yeah and that’s because the ball was on the inside right um but I I mean what he what was he 24 for 30 and we’re talking about maybe two three throws that weren’t where he wanted to be yeah okay so a win yeah the should have been a win today do the running backs make the list that’s bols uh Gibson definitely makes it for me I have Gibson on the yeah why did they go away from him in the second half like late this you know later I it’s like it continues this I can never get an exact beat of what they’re doing with him but I mean it’s like I seven for 62 8.9 per carry I mean it felt like he had more than seven times but each time he did he brought a little bit of juice a little did he get banged up at the end like what was the deal I don’t know I don’t know it’s it’s just it remains an enigma cuz he he ran in for the touchdown in the fourth quarter that was a good one he gave him the go-ahead touchdown yeah this run was a nice one too uh you know well let’s keep going yeah they they ran the ball better today um I think we can talk you know Stevenson there’s there’s a lot going on there but he had 18 Stevens had had 18 carries and Gibson had seven well 18 for 73 and uh he a he averages four yards to carry with a 32 yd run uh and another fumble another fumble that six for the year Fred Fred was um I think Fred will have him on a different list let’s just put it that way Fred was not happy with rre Stevenson today yeah I just I only had Gibson on for for I I had just Gibson too um okay what else on the good oh I guess I guess I’m up um what else on the good list so uh I thought Gonzalez uh again that’s a that’s a big time pick when you undercut uh Alec Pierce um didn’t see him in the general vicinity of anything they didn’t complete a lot of passes in general but I didn’t see him in the general vicinity of any receivers that caught passes today um good play at the end stringing out Jonathan Taylor and uh kind of forcing Taylor to go out of bounds there knowing he needed to stop the clock rather that was that was thir third third and goal I thought he was involved in that play I thought Gonzo was was Sol not not asked to do a whole lot but when he was he was solid yeah so I had him on my good list too two games in a row with a takeaway for there for Gonzo good good stuff so Fred expand and I’m not saying that I disagree with you they scored on four of their five possessions in the fifth possession they missed a chip shot field goal when you say they had a chance is that what you’re talking about we’re not on the bad list yet no no no no I just wanted he said I said give me some instant analysis his instant analysis was they failed to capitalize by putting the game or taking more control of the game in the first half right is that did I correctly summarize I mean bringing knives to a gunfight I’m going to address that yeah okay because I’m with Fred I’m a th% with Fred all right is he that was that was negligent coaching that cost them seven points at the end of the half and then the kicker cost him three okay have we then um have we emptied the bucket on good no okay uh I had Alex Austin on my good list uh I thought Alex Austin showed up uh today and he gets a pass interference on the last drive he earned um yeah no I know but like I thought um some really competitive coverage on some deep balls that’s what the Colts want to do they’re not going to go 12 yards at a time downfield generally they’re going to try to make big chunk plays when he was uh you know called upon on deep balls uh that’s a really good play right there that he made uh knocking this ball away and is this the Deep one uh no okay that’s a different one so we’ll probably get to that in a second but I thought the uh and that was a good play by schooler too getting in the land I think he may have gotten a piece of that too so those two guys on that play that was a big play uh in the game but the Deep ball really really good coverage stride for stride he’s Fred he was in Phase yeah in his cover and and he’s able to make uh make a play on the ball good pass defense I thought Alex Austin was solid in this game yeah yep made some good plays um I I I don’t no I’m not I I I thought Marcus Jones had a couple of those kind of plays though too where he’s competitive in coverage um but I only gave him I only have him one check so I don’t know if that’s enough to get on the good list for me yeah and he was a plus as usual on a punt returns right yeah he had a couple of good punt returns um wasn’t a lot there but he made something out of you know not a lot this might be the Alex Austin no it’s not um that’s when he was spraying the ball around that was the one he ear mailed yeah you know how how are you going to let this guy go you know 19 plays down the field 522 uh I I will I will say this about him there might be something there if he’s mentally if he’s strong mentally he can there some of the stuff that he can’t do right now you can learn right yeah yeah I I’ll say that if I were if I were the call if I were the Colts I would be cautiously optimistic let’s put it that way I I don’t think you can necessarily just learn how to be more accurate I think that’s kind of an innate thing but he’s going to learn how to see the fields better and then he has that physical skill set that like that not a lot of guys have I told you during the game every time you tell me a lot of things every time Taylor leaked out he was there for a check and he had plenty of room so that’s a great examp look that way that’s a great example they say like you know sometimes just take the easy money right you know every throw that he makes he’s the opposite of like the vast majority of NFL quarterback backs all of his throws air yards are like 15 or more yeah um but I I would be cautiously optimistic if I were a Colts fan with him y cuz he might be able to figure it out he’s nowhere close yet though wild that’s a signature drive for him to cap that off the way that they did right and the two-point conversion was all him sure yep Carri guys in put it in his hands let him win yeah so I also had the like the very first drive of the game um again we see some creativity for Alex velt you know it’s like you’re going to put Marcus Jones out out there no we’re going to play action off of him and we’re going to throw a little shovel pass to Hunter Henry good stuff you know like good mix so is this how the good works Paul does a all and then everybody said everybody said they were out no I was I can’t help it if I had more things that I was optimistic about I’m not pouting that they’re he gets so down he nothing’s good you know exactly he sat down he but Fred said does anybody else have anything and everybody said no I have more stuff that I felt good about I agree with what you’re saying so far Paul Austin you just wanted to take a shot at that’s okay I just I just I understand I just fig we say hello to the B I don’t know if we just emptied the holster with Paul and then we just move on to the B well we get to the point where stuff I thought the play that galani tay and Christian Ellis combined on in the first half was a really good play good you know dropping into coverage on those zones that was good good range show by T like these are some good play that’s a good play yeah it is those and it’s not an easy pick that that Ellis comes up with now we might see what happens after that pick come up on a different list right uh Mike do you want to add Mike I think I think Paul touched on all the individual plays so yeah I’m good um oh I had I I had uh here’s an interesting one on the good list I wrote Fred International plug oh yeah oh yeah yeah Fred was Fred was uh was into that giddy nah giddy is a strong word because he was a little on edge today was a lot of heavy size today he did say like the Patriots take a 247 Lead You goes you give him the nod and I’m like f no right have you seen this team play this year it was very well produced by CBS I thought Fred so they uh I’m sure you were very happy with it yes it was our International day we had a lot of fan clubs around the world uh check in with their watch parties Zurich and Munich Brazil so good day for the international fans there there you go they got to they got to see a game ripped away from them just like the American fans did Mike anything else no ad okay so want to get to the bads y Mike you can lead us off please okay great uh red zone offense let’s start it with that two for six uh they came into this uh game 29th in the league in red zone offense so it’s a recurring problem for them but I think that’s what Fred was getting at you get touchdowns there in the early going you change the temper of the game you take a bigger lead and and you put more pressure on Indie so I thought that was just really one of the three key areas where this game was lost today was red zone offense so I would totally agree with Mike and Fred you can jump right in on this cuz I don’t want first and goal correct seven yeah awful play calling awful clock management awful everything so instead of getting seven that you should have you settle for three and then your field goal kicker misses a 25 yard field goal which Matt I believe is correct in pointing out is the shortest Miss field goal in the NFL this year they were first and goal at the two it ended up first and goal at the 22 because of penalties I mean what are we doing wait a minute I don’t think that’s the same drive it wasn’t it was it wasn’t that was another talking about another B BX Red Zone appearance that’s penalties and that’s that’s not acceptable the other one at the end of the half was self-inflicted yeah and I I just I don’t really understand some of the decisions that they make like I gave um Alex Vel credit for you know some imaginative create creative play calling early I cannot take any more away from him for what he did at the end of the half and you guys are right like it was 97 I believe at the time is that the score no 1614 it was 1614 you have a chance to take a two-score lead right and they completely butchered it and I want to get it I want to get the plays up here so I can figure it out here um okay so it’s first first and 10 from the 11 with 41 seconds left you can see the play on your screen screens what do you want to doks what do you want to do here not that I’ll tell you that there’s 41 seconds left pick up a one let’s throw the ball into the end zone three times and see if we can get a touchdown we get nothing okay now it’s second and nine this is perfect good job Chris guys really despise that call because that forces you to use timeouts now you’re out of timeout so now there’s 26 seconds left and here’s the thing now you can’t get stopped in the field of play can’t get your field goal team on no you you have time to do it but now it’s a fire drill corre now and I think that they like to talk and I think actually Jeremy Springer talked about this on Friday Mike Evan and I were talking about it during the game 19 is kind of like that so they had enough time to do it but why would you ever set yourself in a position where you had to do it that way when you had timeouts and you were in scoring position running the ball on the second down play there to me was ridiculous and sometimes these people are like but they’re always trying to run it in down there why don’t they throw it and I’m like they haven’t really done well they did it today they tried to run it now it works later in the game but the later in the game it’s not about the clock when they scored the touchdown in the middle of the fourth quarter clock isn’t a factor this time it is because it forced you to use your last timeout unlike Matt Ebu is saying I don’t know what they’re calling timeout for right um but now that sets up a third third and uh was it third and three now you guys can let this run and I said to myself a sack here is going to be a fire drill sure enough what happens sack holding now they get bailed out by the holding call right because if the holding call doesn’t happen that’s a running clock and now you got to run the field goal unit on the field if I were the Colts I would have rolled the dice and taken the penalty and see if they could do something else stupid like run the ball again cuz that was so mismanaged at the end of the half like I I I really got frustrated cuz I was with you guys they had a chance I think it was 16 14 at the time they had a chance to take a two-score lead when was the last time they had a two-score lead Chicago yeah right like I I just thought that was that was poor clock management poor play calling and then obviously poor execution when Joey Sly misses a 25 yard field goal and I think did someone someone texted me like he looked like he was trying to blame the holder on it I didn’t notice that during the game but I mean he misses this bad he it wasn’t even close he barely hit the net right and it doesn’t look like there’s anything wrong with the hole to me the laces are out yep laces out stinkle what are you doing Guy come on it look like def gave a look there didn’t he so like I’m with Fred I think the game was kind of lo I mean I know they should have won anyway but they made it so much harder on themselves and the game was kind of lost on that Series yeah yeah yeah yuck what else we got it’s a shame all right Mike so you let off with Red Zone um offense red zone offense what category I mean the category is bad getting any points um what part of the defense do you want to place in the bad category is it all uh take your pick I mean I I would say like like let’s just flip it to the red zone for the defense too because uh you know allowing Indie to go three for four inside the Red Zone I mean that you know is a big chunk of where this game was one but yeah I mean it’s just lack of impact lack of impact at the end I mean you could say clutch defense too but you know just not being able to get that last stop I think overall I don’t know whatever you want to put it under for the bad list it’s just the lack of Clutch the lack of the team needing you to step up and to make a play and and the defense unable to deliver it with a sustained drive like you know number of plays you rarely see um just incredibly frustrating to watch that play to watch that drive unfold it’s just play after play after play and I think all game they struggled to make negative plays for the Patriots you know to to push them back to you know I think the couple drives that you saw where they did actually make stops and early Downs then they forced a couple punts that they had but just not enough not enough from the defense and certainly in the Red Zone they were they were not able like I said you’re going to at the stats and say well what are they talking about they only gave up 253 yards of offense but they never really stopped them it’s the same thing with the last two weeks they just the field the Colts stopped running the Patriots didn’t stop their running game right well the Colts didn’t stop running they ran the ball very effectively the whole game 25 carries for 96 yards they I mean Taylor ran the ball well whenever he want no my point is that the yards wasn’t there wasn’t a ton of yards because they weren’t on the field that often R when they want they kept hitting the end zone like and no I’m but like to your point about the Red Zone Mike is is like they SC they scored touchdowns when they got down there they also lose like like the total yards doesn’t count the two pass interference penalties the one on the last drive and the one earlier in the game for 30 yards like those don’t count in total yards right those were both plays that would you know that that that that counts um so there’s your Austin coverage play right there yeah that was a really good play by the wayed Y this is I mean Alec Pierce is a big time deep threat no penalty there times it perfectly over the top and he knocks the ball away this is a pass defense this didn’t hit ad Mitchell in the hands and get dropped this didn’t hit that number 83 guy who I don’t know who dropped it Grayson Allen um that was a really good I thought Austin was good in this game and I know it’s unfortunate for him that he got the pass interference in the on the last Drive um CU I thought otherwise he was pretty good in this game that’s just a drop by Mitchell that’s bad that’s really bad I you know like that that’s why I didn’t think there was any chance they were going to score after losing all those opportunities um but give the Colts credit they kept coming back the um I will say Jones did kind of did close a little bit on that play it was a drop but he got his hand on the ball he didn’t a little bit he didn’t they showed the replay several times the ball hit the receiver in the chest and then the hands and then he dropped it now he celebrates like he did last week for obj understood but this is just that’s just getting beat in coverage and the other guy just not making a play pretty good touch on those balls too by you’re talking about they might have something there he oh yeah I like I just thought these kinds of plays the got to have it plays he made them he had them yep you know I and I didn’t think there was a chance I mean that’s a great throw I didn’t think there’s a chance they were going to throw the ball into the End Zone on Fourth and goal by the way uh I thought if they were going to score there it was going to be the way they got the two-point conversion not not with him throwing it was a good throw yep was that pierce that caught the the tying well the goad touchdown as it turned out um run defense I thought they they lacked all day yes oh yeah that was my bigger Point Paul that the the statistics don’t look like they were gashed all day Indy could run the ball whenever they wanted to yeah but I would say it like 34 for 144 that’s gashed all day like that’s bad y um you know the Patriots had 200 yards of of running off rushing offense they were I mean Patriots ran the ball really well today and they had a lot of those yeah may had a 41 had a 41 Y in there well but that’s I mean they had I mean Stephenson and Gibson combined for uh 135 right that’s a lot yeah yeah but may may had 59 which gets you up to 200 just so much space inside with the Indie running game and that’s what I think is the problem with the Patriots defense and their lack a kind of depth at linebacker they’re just every carry he’s able to pinball three four five yards if there’s nothing there scrap for four yards you and that’s the runs where he isn’t just clear and and getting a good sizable gain so I just you know like these ones it’s just just eight yard not yard yard absolutely like remember your key was a build a wall right I mean that’s like the fundamental of the three4 defense of the guys up front standing their ground staying in their gaps and holding things up and you know you just when you look at it from behind you should see a pick at fence you should see guys backs with their numbers facing you right ahead of you and and you don’t see it you see guys getting pushed back you see some guys forward and that causes all kinds of creases in there and that’s why you’re not getting get caught watch the pain that’s what they’re doing so and the other thing Mike I would say is even on the last Drive I think it was first and goal from the seven on that Colts final drive they let him just take the snap and run a quarterback sweep like pop warner you know and he gets down to the two yeah yeah he runs well in person I I just you know I think some sometimes those things stand out to you know like you see somebody like in person like he’s got yeah I mean he had nine for 48 and he only had like you know he only had this long was 13 so it wasn’t like there were big plays he just consistently yeah getting yardage big and he just runs well you know like athlete you know he was as advertised he’s erratic as hell but he’s he’s talented as hell too I I came away somewhat impressed with him today yeah I think you had a good point saying you know what if you’ve got the patience and that’s a big if especially today in the National Football League if you’ve got the patience and this kid is willing to put the work in you might have something here because he’s got a tremendous set of tools our fans don’t want to hear about Richardson well I thought we want to hear about the game no want hear about the this isn’t the postgame show no easy to drink easy to enjoy but the official beer sponsor of the New England Patriots and you might need a budlight After today’s game uh the final 25-24 the Patriots lose in heartbreaking fashion what else have we hit penalties yet on the um bad list Mike this week’s um Garden variety was holding by the offensive line only I thought they had five five one was deined they had yeah they declined yeah you’re right Dar and low one got declined um geez I don’t know I mean under the banner of penalties Red Zone and the last Drive I mean those are the those are the three bad to me I mean I don’t have a lot bad to say about the offense other than some of their situational play situational stuff but that’s it I thought the offense was really really good today balanced run pass but defensively didn’t see anything really new out of these guys certainly some of the guys in the secondary that are more talented made some plays but at the same time up front you’re you’re losing the game you’re getting pushed around in the Run game and you know you just weren’t able to impact the the quarterback that three and out after the Gonzalez pick though was that was a Crusher that was all right so Paul uh Fred wants us to talk about the Patriots doesn’t want us to talk about Richardson that’s fine uh good shout so let’s talk about you know we’re looking for Hope here down the stretch um are we done with the bat or does anyone else get to do it or is it just Paul again no I haven’t had any like you’re been really mean to me do you have any bad Fred that we haven’t pointed out yet well I I think that I said it early I didn’t see any quickness to the ball I think I think you did say that I think the Run support from the linebackers of safety just wasn’t there it was slow today I don’t know why you know we saw peppers in there maybe um you know he’s not ready for game action perhaps mapu was out uh but I just didn’t see the Run support filling those gaps um and I think you know Taylor before he first Contact he already had three or four yards two often yep and that was a big thing that started early I saw that early um you know and so that to me that was that was a bad and I think that’s for the Patriots that’s where the game was lost because there was only two things you had to worry about those Long Shots by Richardson which a lot of them he missed on his own or they dropped and Taylor’s running yeah and and you know uh like I said Richardson helped him out on the long shots but the Patriots did not do the job with Taylor I think what one of the things it’s just so frustrating is knowing that they’ve got to drive the field 80 yards and really predominantly I mean there was some mixing in there right Paul you can give us a breakdown on run versus pass on that final drive but that one’s got to be on Richardson and you know I think as a patriot fan you would have said I’ll take our chances here you know he’s not going to lead him on an 80 yard Drive unless he hits a 60 yarder you know but they went 19 plays down the field he orchestrated that and you you would so here here’s another thing I want to talk about a little on the defense it seems like a lot of times throughout the season it it’s not for a lack of effort but the Patriots are out of position a lot it’s almost like they’re guessing wrong on defense communication and so I I look at Covington and I’ve heard some people say and I don’t know if it’s true you know when we watch these games we don’t we can’t tell but I’ve heard some people say he’s asking them to do too much he’s not keeping it simple he’s trying to be too you know di multiple to multiple you know and um and then that leads to communication issues and being out of position I don’t know if it’s true but often it does look that way I mean don’t you have numbers Mike that suggest they play like man more than most teams you said second amount in the league yeah they had the second second highest rate of man coverage in the league so I mean that’s been pretty much I early on they were playing a little bit kind do a lot of the same stuff yeah well but and I’m not telling you you’re wrong I I wouldn’t how would I know if it’s too complicated but just because you’re Zone doesn’t mean it’s all the same it the there’s differences in how you play that and you heard may I think I think they’re in base defense a lot but you heard see now that’s that’s a bigger change I you heard Mayo say early you know a few weeks ago you know we’re a game plan team he’s referring to the defense meaning every game it depends on the matchups and you know you could have a different role as a player in each game and so I like I don’t know we don’t have that information but it does seem like like today for example it just seems like they’re out of position a lot like I’ll say the touchdown the first touchdown you could there was there you get a blitz from from Ellis up and you know and and I think Tavi is in a tough spot there because he’s got to respect the quarterback’s ability to run um and he comes up and no one there’s nobody there to cover Jonathan Taylor right like I I know I’m pretty sure that this isn’t the way it’s designed and he could have thrown it to 10 too cuz he was wide open as well if he wanted to right there that shouldn’t be that easy and it’s Taylor it’s the one guy you really kind of have to worry about it’s funny cuz you kept saying how open he was all day and there’s he you know and they never threw it to him again I don’t think I think that might be his only catch yeah fifth I think they said that that was his fifth career receiving touchdown yeah but like they only targeted him once all day Fred said that that was available every time he out you know and Richardson the play was AB obviously designed you know downfield but he would leak out and there would be no one covering him hey Chris can you bring that back a little bit to the beginning of that play because I think this speaks to the communication issues so I will say they they ran this quick and I don’t think the Patriots were ready no and I think they struggled with Tempo and they weren’t going you know full board no huddle but you know they were getting on the line of scrimmage and running the play and you can just see they’re not lined up and I think they ran another play on that drive earlier in job same way so yeah I mean I understand what Fred’s talking about like maybe game plan you know I think that worked for a lot of years here when you had really good players and maybe well it’s a little hard to to be different every week and I know we aren’t allowed to say it anymore but we also had a coach who would be able to take complex schemes and simplify them for each player so each player knew exactly what they needed to do that could be part of it and they would get in trouble even then when you tried to do more yeah and and I maybe that’s you know guys are like I said it’s not for a lack of effort it’s just guys trying to make plays um and you know trusting what they’re seeing instead of trusting what they’ve been told to do I I just wonder how many defenses in the NFL are game planed defenses would call themselves game plan defenses would say we try to switch it up every week and and to me as much as yes the players but also like Fred you said like which coach is deciding the game plan every week and you know a first year defensive coordinator coming up with what he thinks is the secret sauce for each team it’s a lot different than Bill bich coming up with what the secret sauce is and and communicating that to the players so I do it’s something we talked about on pu a little bit of do they simplify the defense this year and just get back to an identity of like this is what we want to do I think it’s a good thought that Fred has you know instead they’re just not good enough to being a jack of all trades when really you’re not really a master of anything you’re just kind of cosplaying each individual role that you’re trying to throw out there week today we’re a dime defense like are you though you’re such a nerd um all right have we emptied the badl bucket I think so I think so unless okay and I just can I just say one thing though I just you could say anything want like I told youthy Richardson running it right up the gut of your defense for the two-point conversion I just I took a little exception to that like I just think you know we talked about Devon Goa he been you know would would that be your play call if Vince wol Fork was in the middle probably not you know that’s just just a little punch in the face that I don’t like like that that that that’s how they did it right just boom we’re going to go right up the middle and we we’re going to win the game I know and 20 20 plays with the penalties and everything like that you have to believe that at some point in time the Patriots were gassed a little bit wouldn’t you they were on the field for a long time barmore got pancak on that play you see that you want to take another look at it or um yeah we can I think he just showed it a couple of times but if you watch Barm more boom whoa whoa whoa you see him go back I did back and to the left red red sleeves watch the red sleeves back like he got over a guy yeah he got run over 56 I think is Quinton Nelson if I’m not he Quinton good good player yeah all pro yeah although it’s not as much of a now that I’m looking at from the backside he tripped over a Colt player he tried to sneak up the back side uh I’m not privy to injury information as I’m not in the Press Box uh besides Henry um going out for a minute Anthony Jennings went out but both those guys came back correct did Gonzalez I think they all they all were banged up but I I think they all returned right correct all three of those guys they didn’t make any announcements in the Press Box on any of them nope okay so there you have it the good the bad is there a category for frustration do you think that should be maybe for this year’s team why are you frustrated because of some bad things yeah yeah well you let yeah they just continue to beat themselves it’s a it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy it looks like how many of you I’m stunned really that Paul pillo I really am no joke stunned that Paul pillo goes oh they’re going to win this game I don’t like I don’t see how like once they got once they got the ball in their hands like you just figured there’s going to be a penalty or something some self-inflicted wound they haven’t done enough end the Colts were going to move the ball in that last possession but but didn’t I thought if they were going to score it was going to be he was going to hit one of those long I never would have guessed they would really 19 no I figured they’d move it but I just didn’t think they’d get in the end zone you know cuz they needed the touchdown and I thought they’d keep him out of the end zone and they couldn’t do it and I like I said I wasn’t necessarily confident like um no the Patriots got this game like Fred said it to me when they took the lead go you give him the N I was like no right but I just I figured if the Colts were going to score it was going to be because of a big play and then when Gonzalez comes up with the pick and the Patriots get the ball and like and I I actually joked about it I said they’ve moved the ball every time they’ve had it today they haven’t punted once I watch this be a three and out and I never thought for a second that would be a three and out and it was it was a bad three and out quite honestly that was the key sequence of the game because once you did that you invited the Colts to take the ball down the field and score right and so you would you know let’s say the team well this is a young team and they got to learn to take advantage of those opportunities and so you I think if you’re highlighting for Drake May and this offense where it looks like you know they are making some strides so I think I I feel good about that like I really feel good today about just what we saw from Drake in the pocket and some of those throws like I I tell you I’ve mentioned them a couple times but throw into windows and you know just seeing the field right you know that’s what was back this week and hopefully he can settle in 11 on third Downs 422 yards 24 for 30 um 238 yards throwing uh they had the running game it’s hard to feel bad about a lot offensively today they just didn’t finish the drivve now now pop going into the game was injured uh he was on the injury report and uh I think he might have been a game time decision I don’t know but I think I think he was hampered I think they missed him a little bit today you know as one of the tools in Drake’s uh tool belt what are you looking for what what are you look I mean caught four balls I know but I’m talking about when you get close down there like his getting going one care touchdown 5 foot nothing he’s a threat to score every time he touches the ball Paul don’t forget like I I like I have really nothing bad to say about the offense though I thought they did what they wanted to do every single possession but one right so we’re going to take a quick time out here when we come back I want to talk about the Fateful three and out that led to the Colts the Patriots lose today 2524 a gut-wrenching loss here at Gillette Stadium uh they fall to 3 and 10 after losing to the Colts today 855 Pats 500 is the number and you can electronic mail is podcast patriots.com I want to talk about the penultimate drive for the Patriots where they go three and out I believe Chris and Josh have those plays for us so first and 10 uh they run it for two yards I think anybody got a problem with that one uh first down no no not really I wish Gibson ran it yeah okay again there’s no there’s no hole or anything like that second and eight um you’re at Midfield 720 left to go on the clock and it’s another run just that where that play you tease this early and I we need to follow up on I just want to say cuz Matt I think was talking about the play calling and I would say I have a problem with that play well I’m not talking about the play I want to talk about its play calling and its execution what second and eight not a running down in the NFL okay that’s all I will say all right but here’s my trying to battle the clock a little bit there too seven minutes left the clock is not in play yeah on the did you see what they did on the punt where they milked it all the way down to one second before um Ray guy Let It Go um desperate but Fred has a lot no no no they were they should have been they were they were worried about the clock that’s my point that’s probably why they ran the ball right like the the object is to end the game if they got like 15 yards the game’s over sly’s kicking a field goal it’s a two-score game that should have been the goal right but anyway Fred has been very critical of the running back yeah I I think I think randr was a good runner I think his his abilities have lessened ever since he had that fumbling uh still got it you know he’s still doing it but too often you see him with his back to the to the field at the end of a run and he’s almost like backing into the line sometimes I think a lot of it is the fear of fumbling his style has changed and I think the same thing happened with um Steven Ridley back in the day yeah um you know when he was running free he was he was much more elusive but he was fumbling the ball and he changed the style and I think ra Andre is doing that too uh too often where he finishes the play and his back is to the line and it it tells me that he he gets in there he’s just so afraid of exposing that ball that he’s using his body to Shield it and he loses any ability to pick up you know a couple extra yards so let me counter that and I think that’s a very good observation that you’re making I think where you see that happen is when you’re playing with an inex experienced offensive line where there’s not a lot of starting caliber players that are on the on um playing for the Patriots at this time when he’s met in the back field or he’s met after just a yard gain I do believe he does that more often than not Paul you’ve got the uh play-by-play probably up in front of us um what was the first play of the game did he run for 13 or something like that it was a well-designed play he hit the hole hard no he’s go it’s it was on their first drive he had a big run well yeah but like it’s not there it is right here okay but it first of all it’s second and five so it’s it’s a little different guess my point is watch him hit the there’s a hole and he hits it okay so it’s but it’s one play in the game I’m just saying I I I think I know exactly what Fred’s saying but there are times if it’s blocked up that he shows well every runner in the NFL is there a guy in the league that doesn’t get 35 yards on that play right yeah like let’s not make it out to be that rre Stevenson made that a 35 remember remember early and this is during the four game or five game fumble spree what was he doing that was great breaking tackles he was breaking tackles he was still getting hit in the back field but he was breaking tackles and and ripping off four five yard runs he stopped doing that now so you’re saying has has the fumbling problem led to a lack of aggression May when he’s running I think so now I would say Matt I would be with you in terms of that’s where he runs over a guy now he wasn’t breaking a tackle there but he lowered his head and ran over a guy to pick up an extra three the previous but but I would just say I would agree with you in terms of his production his production is not on him his production is on a lack of blocking like yeah against Cincinnati he ran for a million yards and they had the numbers it was like less than a yard before contact right like he was breaking tackles in the back field on a consistent basis yep I would say that but Fred’s right about his him turning his back and I’m sorry six fumbles is ridiculous yep six like just because you get some of them back doesn’t mean they don’t happen like that can’t happen the other guys running better they don’t block it any better for the other guy he was pinballing off of guys today breaking tackles he he had that one run on like the second and long that he like he literally was like a pin like then the touchdown too pinball back and forth you know now like this is like again I’m I don’t blame him for that I’m not yeah I’m not putting the production him like look at that thir but but I’ll say that if we can go back to that previous play guys um that was a third and one watch this this is a horrible play call it’s third and one why are we going laterally right like this is the stuff that is really driving me crazy and again I Want To Praise them when they give me a wrinkle like putting jacobe brassette under Center and then running a little end around the next time they got a third and short like can we really not put Drake May under Center and run a quarterback sneak like everybody else that’s a good question there was an unathletic guy that used to make a living off of just leaning over one of the two guards and getting the half yard of the yard that needed to get but running laterally on Third and one you know in on a situation like that where I’m thinking to myself well you have two downs to get this unless you lose three yards on the first one right then you got to kick the field goal and by the way that was another um um juncture of the game that they failed to take control that was after the first pick that that third and one happened they went three and out and Mike what did they end up getting a pick three a pick three like you can’t have those right and so then just to close the loop on it on that penultimate Drive Chris second and eight Paul clearly thrilled with the um playall so now we’re so now we’re third and third and third and 10 on this next one got to have it got to throw it and breaks it’s third and 10 and it break I mean you have a jail break because it’s third and 10 so let me ask you this on second and eight right your quarterback went 24 for 30 exactly what do you think the odds are that he’s going to throw two incomplete passes in a row right on second I like the way you’re framing it that’s the same thing I thought I mean I didn’t think of it that way Paul but it’s he’s he’s throwing the ball well like let’s go get it it goes back to that aggressiveness talk we had in the pregame show and to me it’s a fundamental flaw that they’re thinking about running clock cuz I think Matt’s right I think they’re thinking we’ll run it we’ll run clock we’ll run CL that’s not what they should have been thinking first of all it was too early for 4minute offense there’s over seven minutes right they were thinking about running clock there’s no doubt in my mind bring that back a second or so if you would Chris and you see they uh baringer punched this they snapped the ball at the 3se second Mark cuz they’re trying to bleed clock I I saw it live yeah and that’s bad coaching yeah like there’s way too much time why are we worried about the clock especially with that defense like if you had a two but if you had a two-score lead so by all means bleed clock there but the goal there should have been field goal range two-score lead five minutes left game’s over so here’s a question that needs to be asked do you need to change Phil philosophically the way you attack because you can’t trust your defense to get a stop when you need it must you call it a little bit differently here and realize we’re this is the time to seize the game this is the time to seize the game and maybe you’re a little bit more aggressive on your play call what’s the greatest defense you’ve ever seen 85 Bears if I had the 85 Bears defense I would not be playing to bleed clock with seven and a half minutes left up seven might change it with if you had the 85 it might change way game no because not in the NFL because if you don’t do it you still got your defense but what I’m saying is I don’t care how good my defense is in the NFL in that situation more often than not the offense moves the ball and you’re holding on whether they score or not is Up For Debate but you said it Fred you expected the Colts to move the ball down down the field y I expected him to hit a big play but either way I expected him to have success yeah because why in the NFL the team that’s trailing in that spot always has success now they might not always make the field goal or they might not always get in the end zone when they need a touchdown but they’re going to go 50 yards and get in position to do so that’s just the way that it goes in that league right like I don’t care how good the defense is you can’t sit there and say I’m good I’m going to rely on my defense and I think that that they got into that a little bit we’re just going to bleed clock I I just again your quarterback was as on point today as you could be put it in his hands let him see if he can get a first down and don’t wait for third and 10 so that jailbreak comes because you’re not your protection is not going to hold up in in obvious passing situations 855 P 500 Brandon from Dallas Texas you’re first in the Patriots postgame show presented by DraftKings hi Brandon hello uh I have a question for Paul and then do you think that Alex Austin after this good performance today is like our long-term number two corner and then respond to the you don’t I don’t I think he play I think he played well today and I think he took a step forward but no I have to see a lot more than one game before I’m willing to say he’s a starting caliber quarterback but he played well today he’s he’s a got he earned a spot uh I think on on everyone’s good list today I thought he was really good and let’s see what happens when they play against Josh Allen and and you know Herbert and you know it’s going to be a little different yeah and yeah and then for the AP how you’re getting mad at him for not running the ball like up the middle I just feel like in that circumstance happened to T&M in Texas too just with a superior D line that the Colts had I just don’t think it would have worked at all and any of those situations okay Brandon thank you for the phone call um I mean I think that you’re accentuating the defensive line who made the play DeForest Buckner like you go lateral and you’re giving those guys a chance to get penetration yeah Eric from New Jersey is next in the Patriots postgame show hi Eric hey how you guys doing good how are you I’m surprised um surprised you guys again I’m gonna hit on the same points that I hit on last week Kyle Dugger again coverage same guy same player you been uh obviously they’re right there play at the game and win the have it obviously Anthony Richardson doesn’t threaten you as much in the air as you know two a Stafford but again I thought he came exposed there at the end um you got to see the development there this week I don’t want to hear about the ankle it’s the guys’s got to have it and then again you know you guys touched on it earlier this um on the call um ABP like I said last week you know McDaniels gets it make makes it easier down there in that red zone for Tua again the creativity I know we Tred to pass it in there and I know you hit those hit those points but again there’s got to be some creativity make it easier we don’t have you put the clamps on uh Henry and Hooper down there you really don’t have any more targets you know as far as guys that create separation I’ll take it off the line but thanks guys okay Eric thank you very much and I think that that was that just add that to the pile of frustration because as Paul mentioned earlier in the show we saw creativity today you know there was some interesting no but and that’s my point about the frustration you didn’t see you didn’t see it there and I’ve been of defensive of AP because we’ve gotten a couple of mailbag questions Mike I’m sure you get them too in your weeks um where they say like why are they always just running into like I don’t think they’ve done that today they did yeah today they just wanted to run the ball between the tackles when they got inside the 10 and I mean it worked once when it was second and long and they caught the you know Gibson caught the Colts obviously playing pass and it worked I didn’t like that call either 11 yards out in my defense I was miserable on that call too um they did bust out the wild cat with Stevenson that got called for a penalty and got called back so little bit of little bit Fred’s Point Stevenson bounced it outside you’re not supposed to that’s where the holding call comes from cuz they’re not expecting you to go wide you sp that’s first and goal from the two hit it up in there get north south right uh is it possible it wasn’t there yeah but you can’t bounce it out and like that that’s where you’re going to get a penalty and then they compounded it by getting another holding penalty on the next play you know what I’d like to see in the Red Zone a little a little bit tou let’s go back to the preseason and uh the Drake May uh uh keeper on that you know play action let’s just let’s little Drake May there Fred was calling for one didn’t you say it one dayback draw on one of those make it bootleg yeah yeah that’s what you said right give me some I agree with both of you guys and I kind of thought they were setting the stage for that a little bit this week the way they talked about it yep Dylan from California is next on the Patriots postgame show presented by DraftKings hi Dylan hello Dylan I think it’s Dyan Dylan dillian all right dillian no dillian let’s go to Matt nice name Washington DC Matt you’re next on the Patriots postgame show hi Matt time caller four years in Japan you guys were the only ones keeping me sayane thanks a lot for all you guys do I just got a couple points One Forest through the trees I flew the boy up here last year 45 nothing against this thing we are improving it’s a product that’s worth watching we’re stoked leaving the game there’s a lot to be excited for my question is let’s focus on the forest not the trees name three teams you’d rather not be a fan to I’d say Dallas Jets and somebody else this is a team to be excited for we’re driving home Happy I’ll take it off air hey by the way that’s a caller of the that’s a caller of the day right there caller the day I was talking to Evan Lazar before the game you know we get up there and we we we talk talk you guys if you’re a general manager this is a good position and obviously Elliot wolf is the GM but if you’re a gen general manager this is a team that you’d want to say yeah I can do something with this you’ve already got your quarterback so you don’t need to worry about that you got a ton of money you’re going to have high draft picks this is a team that you can build there’s a lot of potential here for a general manager who knows what he’s doing and I’m not saying Elliott doesn’t but I’m so I’m saying the future can be bright yeah and I’ll jump on that I’m not saying I’m not saying the future isn’t bright and here’s the only thing I would say Matt from DC is right on the money you know there’s something to build on look at the forest of the trees there was a tree that was ready to cut down today today they could have cut the tree down and they whiffed that’s what’s frustrating that’s all I know but winning games isn’t part of the the it’s good for morale and you want to win games but that’s not the most important thing the most important thing we all said this in the beginning of the season it’s Drake May right I think we all believe right now we’ve got our guy we’ve got our guy kers col win not important and that was the main thing that we were worried about coming out of this season Fred if you just said that on on NBC Sports Boston you you’d get Savaged tomorrow on on social media K col winning not important we’ve checked that box okay so so now it doesn’t matter if we won three games this year or seven games if or or 10 games if May wasn’t going to be our guy he’s our guy so now we can go into 2025 knowing we’ve got the quarterback let’s build around him we have the tools to do that we’re not hampered so the future is bright from that perspective I can’t call the 2024 season a success if the only thing you can hang your hat on is that you found the quarterback what what was your expectation that here’s my expectation and I think and I said this in the pregame show and Mike eloquently mentioned this about five weeks ago I I’m old enough to remember as are you to remember what happened at the end of the 93 season I want to see a team that’s a team that’s trending upward you knew you had the guy withdrew so I want to see a team that’s moving in the right direction I don’t see that part yet I want to see a team down the stretch that’s a pain in the ass to play and I think they were a bit of a pain in the ass today it was marked improvement you could only go really up from the Miami game so that’s a positive I think comparing to that team back then is unfair there was a lot more Talent back especially on defense but but I think that if you look at um if you look at these games there are several games that they were in it they were competitive and I you know you clean up those penalties you build a better offensive line for in this year you would have had seven or eight wins and uh seven or eight wins yeah you think they were close to getting seven or eight wins this year with if with Drake mayor quarterback in a better offensive line oh so so a whole different entire cast of character well yeah I can’t I can’t dispute that then right with a better offensive line with Drake qu and I think I think starting Drake earlier is part of it so I think even now you’re seeing glimmers of a team that that can win some games if they you know make some moves next year so what I like about today today’s game was there to be one I’m Matt from Japan yeah so am I uh I the both things I think can be right the future can be bright not and I know by Mike’s face he ain’t now listen you have to draft well and you have to be smart and free AG agency yeah expand expand well you’re you’re you what I what I like about what Fred’s saying you know about the call is like they they have the the resources to to do the things that they need to do and what another positive is they’re going to have a top five pick and they’re not locked into a position like they don’t have to take a left tackle they don’t have to take a wide receiver draft order is up on the screen right now they can legitimately take what they deem to be the best best player right cuz they’re not like they don’t need a quarterback and they’re not and they and I know this sounds like I’m damning with faint praise but they they need literally everything else correct so they can pick legitimately what they think the best player and they have to hit on it but I want to get back to something you guys talked about like Matt said I can’t deem this to be a successful season if the only thing that comes out of it is you got the quarterback and you said what are the expectations and I would say I would have expected with the third overall pick to get more than one draft pick and right now it kind of looks like you got one draft pick in Drake may you put a rookie guard in there today got two more holding calls struggled again the other the other offensive lineman you took in the draft still isn’t back on the field um if those things can manif I don’t necessarily care about being a pain to play against um in the last four games or winning the games um but you need to have some young players that start playing well that’s the difference between the 93 team the 93 team had a bunch of young guy that wasn’t a good team they were 2 and4 in ‘ 92 and they started 1 and 11 in 93 they didn’t have talent they drafted the talent and the and the Talent started to play well as the year went on you was young guys like Chris Slade um you know there weren’t a lot of Bruce Armstrongs on that team that were really good coachs was still young Slade was young you know they they go out in 94 and draft mcginness that’s when the good players started to come but really it was Michael timson and Drew bledo in the in the passing game like you know they didn’t they didn’t have a whole lot on that team but they got better but the line wasn’t this bad you got to admit that Fred they had NFL players so I would say that they were better on and like but this is what I’m saying like when you said seven or eight wins and I was like what and then you said well if they had a different offensive line literally yeah four different guys okay cuz aeny was the only one that I would say is a starting player all right so Robinson that played today Robinson was flagged for two holds today I I’m sorry and again I’m watching the TV copy did anybody look at him we’re where it’s okay to see Drake may make mistakes because he’s a rookie he’s being graded on a curve is the same grading system applied to leaden Robinson of course okay so is it possible if he played let’s just say I don’t know how many offensive players there were let’s say there’s 60 snaps today is it possible he was pretty good on 50 snaps and not really good on the other 10 including the two holds I’m not smart enough or good enough to grade his offensive line that would be a bad day for an offensive lineman if that’s the case now I am not even going to pretend to tell you how many plays that he didn’t do his job today I think that they ran the ball well I don’t think that was necessarily a result of great blocking yeah um and the pass protection was a train wreck all day like there was four more sacks and a lot of immediate pressure today that he ran out of the pocket to avoid right yes how many times did you run around buying time Mike was saying likee in the in the first half Mike Mike said like it’s so fun when he just he gets out of the pocket and that guy thinks he’s going to get you and he like I know I’m like it’s a little bit of a love love poem to Drake may but like they never get him it’s like five yards around the end and that’s the thing we we’ve been we’ve been almost accustomed now it’s it’s almost been normalized that he’s not going to have time and he’s going to run when that shouldn’t be normal correct that shouldn’t be normal putting he should have his three seconds In fairness I’m not putting that all on Len Robinson I don’t know he might have done a really good job today I’m sure there’ll be reals telling me that he was great what happen but you can look at you can look at the production from May today and say oh the line must have not been that bad well he got sacked four times I know I know 30 passes one of them he ran like it was a run but but Fred he had to because he was under attack I well that’s what I’m that’s what I’m saying he’s given himself up but you know he had another play that he was in the middle of getting sandwiched by two guys and jumped and just threw it away that’s what I’m saying this is all May it’s all may the production is all may you know you can’t say well the line couldn’t have been that bad look at all it’s because of May right so now it’s got to be you put you put a and I’m not saying a great line I’m not saying you put the Dallas Cowboys line of you know when they had all those guys I’m just saying you put a good line in front of May and and now we’re rolling we’re rolling now you give him a semblance of protection and I my guess is he’s going to be able to to do what he did today a lot Mike did you want to intercede there or you look like you’re well no I it’s more General it’s just I I just I I can’t help but think about the contrast from last year’s Colts game when they the defense kind of like you came out of that feeling like man we got a defense if they could just score a touchdown we’d be all right and now here we are the complete opposite a year later and you know I agree with everything everybody said but I just think to me that illustrates how quickly things can change and you can draft Talent they’ve they they’ve got to be on top of it this year everything Paul said about this class is is true so got to have a great year and the difference between last year and this year was Bill bellich let’s face it on defense and Steve bich want me to give you another difference what Tommy DeVito yeah no no no Mitch trabis but Paul fair enough Zack Wilson but same team last year with with this defensive staff I think they wouldn’t have Tommy dito wouldn’t have scored any more than 10 points against this team but I I don’t I don’t think that I think this team would have made more Stakes than last year’s team maybe but they wouldn’t have those guys wouldn’t have scored against this team either not the way that they scored today but I’m just saying that’s a big difference the coaching was a big difference yeah I just think they faced a lot of backup quarterbacks last year and they made they did they made their hay beaten up on the week and they made it look a lot better than it was Absolut even even like that that Denver game late in the year that they won everybody was shocked they went to Denver and win do you remember Russell Wilson who was completely W he had a terrible year do you remember the fourth quarter that he put up when he had two touchdowns and two two-point conversions to tie the game people remember that no that’s what that’s one of the rare starting quarterbacks that you saw that you beat what was Richardson’s percentage today please 50 okay so he was right 12 for 24 right uh kada Chris writes in I don’t really care who but someone needs to pay for this pathetic effort a winning culture is not being built here somebody wants to win by the way a loser culture is taking hold that’s kandid Chris who’s looking for heads um there’s a tree person as opposed to a person if we’re looking uh let’s let me tell you if you’re a Patriots fan you you got to hope to God that Gerard Mayo is better than what you think he is you better hope to God that Alex vanel is better than you think he is because course you hope that you think it no you you better hope to God you’re wrong because if you want to start over next year again with another offensive coordinator for Drake May and that’s that’s worse I’d be prepared for that h I hope not I hope not I mean Mayo’s not going anywhere we know that but I don’t know about Alex Vel and I don’t think he deserves to go but I I I think there’s been too much smoke there I’m worried about that yeah I think that now on defense what I’ll I’ll listen I’ll listen yeah I think I think I think they need to upgrade a little bit on I like frisky Freddy no I think they need to upgrade a little bit on the defense there yeah I mean I think you you can point to the offense they’ve made progress they’ve had you know certain bugaboos that have haunted them but as I said in the pregame so what strides have you seen from the defense what defensive players have you seen Blossom I think Gonzalez carried over his play but otherwise you haven’t seen guys really take that next step and I I think that is you know that is an indictment on that side of the ball to me that I don’t see on the offensive side of the ball Finley from dundy Scotland writes where do you start offensive line can’t take the field without killing a drive the defense has consistently feel to make important stops game after game Mayo not challenging what was a drop on the Colts final Drive um that that one we all thought it was a catch right you need you you probably were going to need those you know timeouts and they kind of mismanaged that a little bit later they could have used the timeouts a little bit better used the Paul asked for that but you you lose that challenge and now you have one less time out when you’re going to need three going down the end so I think it was a good non-challenge um everybody thought his hands were under the ball but now a lot of people watching TV said the of the ball hit the ground that does not constitute a drop correct the ball has to move if he’s got control the ground has to help him catch the ball and I don’t think it did if he’s got control of the ball and it hits the ground and it doesn’t move it’s still a catch uh stefen and Germany hey guys may may be able to overcome the Dismal offensive line with his running ability and his quick decision making and quick release but he cannot overcome the offensive line sloppy play all around and a defense that can’t stop a nose bleed at least the game was entertaining and nothing like the stinker these two teams put up last season in Frankfurt the Patriots snatched an L from the jaws of a w by for now says Stefan from Frankfurt yeah you guys they did they snatch did they snatch an L from uh the jaws of Victory today yeah absolutely I agree just want to make sure but you guys were talking about like so it doesn’t look that bad in the offensive line and whatnot and I I think you’re also if you think that way um you’re ignoring all the holding calls like it was four sacks five holds like that’s and and we talked about this before a lot of times holding is because you’re getting beat so you hold and you’re getting beat because the other guy’s beating you and because you’re not that good so but I think that’s fixable I think that’s fixable well they they need to to address the offensive line this year they chose not to last year and that was a mistake yeah that was a mistake and my guess is what Mike Mike I’m just watching another play where it seems like born Henry I mean I don’t know guys a couple cross right into each other and they that during the game too well that was a mesh that was a mesh concept a mesh concept they stopped on and then they didn’t keep meshing there was mesh Point too much traffic right there right and somebody said that they called the wrong play for a zone defense but that’s not that doesn’t look good no it doesn’t the proverbial mesh concept Uh Kevin from England writes what are they scared of what’s up guys I’m sick to death of the overconservative offensive play calls in the fourth quarter of games of season we look like we had a pretty effective offense all game but off the back of the Gonzo pick is a usual AP takes a game out of Drake’s hands well done by being so terrified we barely even get the ball back to do anything uh on the whole for three quarters was a much better game other than the offensive line being committed to operation tank so frustrating here’s the thing I’ll say about these receivers and why you might feel okay being a little bit more you know aggressive I don’t see a lot of drops by our receivers you know you see but overall we’re not a dropsy receiving core correct maybe they don’t get open enough you know I think they dropped any today yeah I mean what’s a Henry play at the goal line is that a drop no yeah so that hasn’t been a problem you know the drops so like be a little bit more aggressive if Drake puts it in the right place they’re going to catch it or it’s going to be a PI right that’s what I just wanted to see there at the end after that pick was just put it and Drake’s he’s playing a great game right now give it to him let let it put they’re going to stop the run they’re thinking you’re going to do what exactly what you’re about to do you know give it to the kid let the kid win the game I’d love to see that here in these last four games if they get that situation again uh David from Madrid also wants to know should Mayo have challenged on that play um on the catch versus non-catch looking for a Challen he clearly could have I think it was a catch but doesn’t mean I’m right he said they didn’t get a good look at it they’re waiting for a review of it uh to get another uh replay of it I thought what the way Fred explained it I think is exactly right I think his hands were underneath the ball and yes the ball it the ball does hit the ground but his hands are underneath it he traps it against his body and the ball doesn’t really move yeah I think that’s a catch I think it’s a catch now I’ve seen bad calls on replay so it might not have been a bad replay but also it’s and it was and it was ruled a catch so to overturn that I don’t see the evidence I think his hands underneath he traps it with his arm and it’s up against his chest you do see the point of the ball sticking out oh the ball hit the ground but I don’t think it aided him in catching the ball right exactly David also wants to know and I think this is a legitimate question how on Earth do the referees miss the head-to-head contact on Hunter Henry what makes me more mad is that the NFL will find the Colts player in three days so here’s my idea this is according to David and Madrid if the referee doesn’t call the flag then the NFL can’t find the player I’m sure that will make the NFL be harder on these terrible referees because there’s nothing more they love than finding players that’s a good idea lastly I felt that most of the flags today were due to a lack of talent and I think and that’s that this is a helmet to helmet hit there’s no doubt I just feel like like there are going to be helmet there’s going to be helmet contact on tackles like four guys in there so you lost a yard that first and goal with the two it would have been first and goal with the one if they called it like what do you like yeah those run you know I know that was a flip so technically that was a pass but he turned into a runner once he had the ball and you know he running plays are rarely they call helmet to helmet on running plays they rarely do what I hate about that play is I hate when guys go in for a tackle with their arms down by their side yeah and and you know that’s a penalty there’s no doubt that’s a penalty cuz he he he launched himself but he wasn’t this is this is the play again he wasn’t even looking he throws it over the middle he cuts it up and he gets hit the 45 I think is that air speed uh EJ speed air speeds the guy used to be here right yeah that’s helmet to helmet it’s clear but I I just feel like there’s gonna be helmet contact on these tackles a lot just got got right under the chin I to that’s that’s a penalty there no argument what you’re trying to do there is hit the guy not tackle the guy corre and I think if you do that that’s fine but if you end up hitting him in the helmet it should be a flag yep but they but In fairness to the refs they rarely call those uh when it’s like in that type of play yeah we we had another International note who’s looking for a challenge flag from Mayo on that uh play that we just viewed uh this is uh Sean in Toronto who writes Alex called this onepoint heartbreaking loss on pu this week and she owes everyone an apology is that true oh did she she did but why did she owe everybody an apology she was right I think she put the put the they saying they put the um the mush yeah she had Indie winning but the Patriots covering she knew something she seems so disappointed I mean I go to your thing Paul like if you work here and you’re going to pick a onepoint game just go with the Patriots but but had a taught me Fred taught me long ago that if you if you think there’s a chance the Patriots are going to win yeah just pick them yeah what are you doing right what do you want to be right about what I did this week I thought there was a chance that they could win this week you were right and I but I am you were on to something my pick was wrong what I say you were on to something did we get the spread though we got the spread can we get the spr we all cover the spread uh Ryan in Colorado writes is it me or these rookie wide receivers contributing absolutely nothing to the team not only this but they are so full of themselves one says he has the best hands in the league and can’t catch a cold the other promis to have people in wheelchair stand up and he’s yet to catch anything that’s Ryan in Colorado I think it was another dut performance was it P got targeted I almost want to see it again cuz it just I don’t know if the guys got the pulk target he didn’t catch it um it was an incompletion but he just it didn’t look comfortable like he didn’t look like he knew where he was how about him kind of how about him after the play yeah watch the play again and watch him bad body language on the Hooper touch bad body on the Hooper touchdown some people were wondering if it was actually intended for poke yeah I don’t think it was I think it was an incredible th but I’d be curious to see we haven’t heard from Drake yet maybe you know maybe get that thank Paul yeah yeah I was throw I was throwing it to poke I’m trying to get pokey a touchdown but here’s a good question see that one like what like it just it doesn’t even look comfortable like he just you know it’s like you know like that was one of his bad no sense of I’m not willing to say that especially with the guy who was in right like I think him and booty aren’t always where they’re supposed to be no no uh Floyd in Michigan has an excellent question in my opinion which side of the ball has more talented Personnel offense or defense I would say defense slightly yeah very slightly cuz Gonzalez is very talented that kind of offsets Drake and then you know you got a yeah they’re they’re a wash but I think you I mean no I agree with you I think Jonathan Jones Kyle Douger chabil Peppers today Christian barmore they have more good players on defense than they do on offense but not by a lot does that make the performance that more I think that’s probably Johnny defense that’s probably Mr Floyd’s point he’s got grind the film the defense should be better Tuesday right you think that’s probably Floyd’s point right the defense should be better because they have a little bit more talent to work and before we go to the podiums this is sp in Fresno California who writes I’m with the optimistic caller Matt in general but I just don’t know how good a coach Gerard will end up being let’s say may continues growing and wolf has a good offseason with all that will Mayo have a real seconde jump or we see too many coaching decisions that are questionable that’s what that we we don’t know the answer that’s play the game but I would like to know little things you know game Operation wise so let’s go back to that drive after the Gonzo pick is that something where gerro goes to AP and says hey look let’s run some clock here let’s you know let’s let’s get the ground game let’s let’s go into our four-minute offense or is he completely hands off and it’s all up to Alex Vel right I don’t know you know I not probably not going to be a question that gets asked but um those kinds of things because Bill used to do that from time to time with with McDaniels he would go and say like all right you know two you got two downs to get this here so let me ask you a question if you were an owner would you want to know that the answer to that question yes how would you go about getting that answer I think you go to the head coach I asked my coach yeah and say walk me through what happened leading into you know Gonzalez picks the ball off and you’ve got the ball with seven and change left to go in the game where a score Paul believes it ends the game a tad optimistic but I know where he’s coming from walk me through the scenario there you wanted to run clock because you thought they were close to ending the game I wanted to score to make a two-score game you don’t think it would be the game no I said a two I don’t know that a two-score game necessarily ends the game that’s score lead with five minutes left in an NFL game right I I shows you my faith in the 20 plays to get that final touchdown I know but you know if he if he hits one of those to one of the wide receivers there’s a lot of there’s a lot of I like my chances I just feel like and I’m not saying that teams don’t ever lose in that situation but you know your your whole nextg nonsense you have to be like over 95% with a two- School lead in less than five minutes left in an NFL game right yeah that should be the goal we have the ball around Midfield our goal should be score two first downs field goal over much like Bill bich said well actually Tom Brady had to tell Bill bich in the Super Bowl it kick the field goal the game’s over right right cuz the game’s over when you’re up by two scores different team that’s all that’s all I’ll say uh speaking of the coach and Gerard Mayo let’s go inside to the auditorium and hear his comments after the game guys again I know I sound redundant like we’re doing a lot of things that are are good now we just need to be more consistent I would say penalties and look it’s about us you know penalties continue to to show up you know both operational and post Snap which we got to do a better job of I would also say you know just our red area in general our red area offense I think we were one for six our red area defense uh we weren’t able to stop them uh there and that’s really the game you talk about special teams the Miss field goal thought we handled the situations the right way the way that we wanted to and we gave ourselves a chance to win um gave ourselves a chance to win at the end away raise your hand if you have questions we’ll go with Dan roach in the back TR you mentioned some good things from your team today on that 19pl 80 yard Drive how disappointing was it you had three fourth down conversions allowed and just not being able to make a play and plus the two-point conversion yeah it’s very disappointing and you know there were some you know they they obviously you know ran the B uh ran the ball relatively well um we just didn’t make the stops that we need to and and look that’s the NFL that’s the NFL we say it every week uh it’s that one play here that one play there and that extended Drive definitely hurt and then those guys going for two and couldn’t keep them out D what went into the decision at the end to try the 68 yard field goal versus going for Hill Mary there yeah that was 100% me um look slly was hitting it well um in pregame and I felt that that was the best thing to do to help our team uh win the football game not sure what the the numbers are on hail Mar’s versus the field goal there but that’s that’s what I felt was right coach was there any thought to taking a timeout maybe before earlier in the drive where the Colts ultimately scored and what was the throt process absolutely there was a thought you know we’ve also you know won a Super Bowl here doing it the other way and keeping our timeouts uh is what I thought was best for the team trod what did you see on the on Drake’s interception down at the goal line to Hunter the one that kind of just bounced around a little bit I mean look it’s just unfortunate um and again you know just in the red area in general I would say from you know the entire game we just weren’t good enough you know as the field starts to contract like that I mean the details and everyone has to be on the same page and we just didn’t just didn’t do well enough uh gerro on the 25 yard attempt by Joey that he missed uh earlier in the game uh it looked like after the kick he looked down in frustration or disbelief at something what went wrong was there something with the operation there or was it just a Mis kick just a m hit nothing with the operation it was a m hit far right hi Dr uh it seemed like you had I think it was a season High rushing yards today uh on offense just what went into the Run game and why was it able to be so successful you I’ve said all along like we have we have good backs and we just have to get them started I would say just the mentality you know if we don’t have a good running game you know it starts up front the same thing here it starts up front I thought I thought leaden actually went out there and moved some bodies and his physicality and you know definitely showed up the entire offensive line and that’s good to see um just got to keep it going J you mentioned penalties off the top what’s happening in the process that’s leading up to the result on Sundays where you continue to have issues like that look we know you know with this crew the first I think we had them the first Miami game they threw 10 holding penalties between the two teams so we wi in the game knowing that you know that’s one of the calls that they make a lot um you know it just comes down to look some of them obviously were questionable but they called them and we just have to we just got to fix those mistakes D your your offense had four trips inside the 10 yard line you know to come away with one touchdown you know how frustrating was that and is there anything you can pinpoint to these you know sudden problems in the red zone no you know I’m gonna go back and watch the film but again like we have to I mean it’s ultimate execution at that point in the game now that safety that usually plays in the Deep part of the field out in the field now as part of the count and we just have to do a better job executing final questions Chris Ryan on the left dra would you categorize this as a game that you guys you know should should win should be able to to close out um look comes down to execution um I think we should win every game that’s just my mentality um and we just got to get better last question Josh broke de dra there was a few minutes to go I think it was a third and eight catch by mallerie uh looked like it might have wobbled from our perspective you decided not to challenge that but I think you had three timeouts at that point did you consider that what went to that decision we were waiting to see the replay um never really got a clear shot of it um so I didn’t challenge it thanks as there’s your head coach Gerard Mayo after the Patriots lose 2524 today um in listening to coach Mayo here’s one thought that I had and I had it actually as the game was uh ending um how much credit do the Indianapolis Cults get for winning the game versus did the Patriots lose this game I think I think because I do think that that’s a difference I think the Colts if if I’m a Colts fan or living in India I give my team credit for fighting and you know having a 19pl drive at the end of the game you know they made a lot of mistakes too and they could have easily lost that game but they never gave up and just like if the Patriots had won I wouldn’t be like saying oh this is the Colts that give it gave it to them I’d be giving credit to the Patriots yeah me too I think it goes to what Paul was saying about Anthony Richardson showing some potential showing some clutch ability in the end and certainly he’s got a skill set that they can exploit you know that I mean he can run I was I mean I said before you see him run in person it looks amazing um but he’s a big athletic guy and he can Chuck the ball down field so I mean I I give them all the credit for that last Drive I would have liked to see the Patriots step up and make a play but you execute that many plays go down the field game on the line uh you got to listen if you’re just watching this and you don’t have a dog on the fight it’s a entertaining game right fun game there’s been a couple of those this year good fear analysis it was an entertaining game um email us please at podcast at patriots.com this is Doug in Connecticut who writes at least twice so far in the postgame Matt has referred to this loss as heartbreaking and gut-wrenching I feel the complete opposite for these three reasons one the Drake is good all in caps I love the Drake two a higher draft position is always better than a lower draft position not just in the first round but in all subsequent rounds and three the more they lose the higher the chance parenthesis Al be it low that they replace this JV coaching staff with a legitimate NFL coaching staff PS the defense is a far bigger problem than the offense and the defensive coordinators a far bigger weakness than the offensive coordinator that’s done in Connecticut today that was true last week the defense wasn’t far bigger problem than the offense both sides of the ball were terrible last week but today the offense was good the defense was like this is what when you when you’re three and 10 and you’re bad team it’s something different all the time that’s the frustrating thing um and I can’t get on board I’m with Mike I think you said it earlier in the show can’t get on board with the tank like it’s better that they lost at some point you need to learn how to win you want to win and I think that part of the reason why they lost today is cuz these guys haven’t been in position I think there was a a thing with um Jonathan Jones you guys were talking about saying I’m not used to this I don’t know why yeah like you were around for a few years where they were really good and you’ve been around for a few years where they’ve been really bad yeah like this is what they’ve been now for the most part since Brady left they had one good year since Brady left speaking of good I think the consensus good grade today all around the board was for quarterback Drake May let’s listen to the quarterback after the game yeah Dan roach in the back Drake uh obviously a lot of good things from your offense today how tough was that one to see that unfold in the way it did yeah it was heartbreaking I think uh you our guys fought hard did a lot of good things so coach may just preaching locker room we did a lot of good things on film I’m proud of the way the guys fought proud of the defense um I thought they play their butts off and especially our guys up front on offense they did a great job I think we ran the football for a bunch of yards um I think we were fishing the passing game and just came up short you know it’s a bummer it’s uh I hate for these guys and hate for these coaches we’re we’re we’re practicing hard we’re we’re fighting hard and just comeing up short frow Drake what did you see on the uh the interception down the goal line to Hunter yeah just try to get to him quick and hopefully he gets in um I think I put on the wrong shoulder I think may have put on the opposite shoulder away from the defender and um I think it’s maybe a completion there but uh just unfortunate that it got tipped up so um just a bummer so if will your Drake we saw jacobe over here we saw jacobe come in for one play uh is that something you guys have been working on on the offense to kind of get him involved and have those plays where it’s maybe a little harder to guess what you guys are doing on offense yeah just think mixing it up so I think um going about our philosophy hopefully I’m not try to share that information just glad we picked up the first down on your here Drake uh Draco four trips inside the 10 yard line you guys only Come Away with a one touchdown anything you can pinpoint you know sort of the reason you falter there and just how frustrating was that yeah I thought we ran the ball you know up until we got to the goal line pretty well I think you know in the passing game I got think maybe get through my progression you know it’s tough down there it’s tight you know Tight Windows tight throws to give our guys some chances um I think that’s probably the biggest thing in penalties I think one of you know one of them was penalties we got back into like a first goal from the 20 and just can’t settle for four you know field goals in the red zone and you know expect to win ball games the middle I know that you want what’s best for the team down the stretch but would you have wanted that last throw I think it’s up to the coaching you know I’m here for you know support you know what coach mayo and and special teams guys and what Joey thinks so I think you know um give whether it’s it’s that or the hell Mary I’m you know either one Drake when you take in all aspects of your offensive performance today what did this game say about your offense and where it’s at right now yeah I think we’re Dynamic I think we can you know Herman in the pass game in the Run game we can do different things you know we got play action we got boot we got you know running the football we got throwing it down field we got guys making plays run after catch um I think there’s another layer to it of making know more explosive plays but we saw that a lot um from run after catch today and I think you know we’re up seven we got the ball left with um about seven minutes we got to go pick up a first down and try to get a field goal and make a play Drake on that first Red Zone trip first drive of the game for you guys you end up taking a sack on third down and kick the field goal on the third down play what did you see there if you can remember it and was spacing at all an issue it looked like Henry and Bourne kind of end up in the same spot by the goal line yeah I think um you know can’t take a sack there you know Red Zone sacks you know especially if we got a chance to maybe get some yardage and go for it um I can’t remember the play but I think maybe uh let see which way are we going we’re going that way yeah I think may had a chance on backside I think you know if I got backside I end up you know scrambling out um which got stay in the pocket and like I said get back to the backside progression two final questions Chris Ryan on the left after the last game you mentioned you were frustrated with your performance in Miami how do you feel about how you bounced back this week and obviously the only turnover was kind of that fluke play you scrambled to to rush but also to to throw was this back on track for you um I think you know I can you know speak for the offense I think you know we got back on track and we played you know solid football game for myself you know watch the football and watch the tape um I think watch the tape and learn and I still think I left some plays out there and you know I just hate on myself you I pride myself and you know trying to Le thisall team to wins and we didn’t accomplish that so that’s probably the biggest thing last question to Kyle uh right here Drake it looked like you guys had a lot of success in the quick game overall but it just seemed like there were a handful of throws where you know things weren’t quite right what would you attribute that to was it your timing was it an accuracy thing just what did you see on those plays um yeah I’m not sure the stats I’m not sure how many how many completions we had but I thought we were efficient you main mostly most of the day I think some of the plant stuff was on time I think I miss booty on slant I was just late to it um JP um you know over the middle I think I just um got to put it on him um or you know once he gives me eyes kind of let him make a move I got to give him a better better ball um but at the end of the day I think we were fishing in the passing game and the guys made plays thank you very much there’s the quarterback Drake May the press press conferences presented by Microsoft Surface a big thank you to our partner Microsoft Surface the official sideline technology provider and laptop of the NFL and New England Patriots that provides players and coaches with the tools to succeed both on and off the field check out the new Surface Pro designed to keep up with you as the most flexible most powerful 2inone laptop and tablet out there at surface.com got a couple minutes here to get some final thoughts of patriot lose 25 to 24 uh Fred mentioned uh as we were I think in the first break that we took maybe the only break that we took tough spot here for jard mayo and the coaching staff they’re going to their buy it’s the latest you can have a buy tough loss to have in the in your mouth and you can’t do anything about it for a while he has a job to try to keep keep the team together at this point in time and and not have guys you know try to convince them not to be making business decisions right you know I and I didn’t know it but I guess Mike ree wrote about you know at least one person said he just did you you know instead of taking a buy and I know you can’t do this but instead of taking a buy just play it out right that’s I don’t know who said that but I worry um that maybe more than one person might think that way know you come to the buy and what you’re coming back for what right you know four games you know and what what Fred what would you be more likely to mail it in for a trip to Arizona or up to Buffalo like what has more you’re going to have one of those too right both sides of that Co back to back it’s like nice and warm like I’d rather be outside and then you’re up in Buffalo like I be anywhere else Le the last two games are at home but but and those are going to those are going to be scheduling pales by the way I’ve already heard some Whispers that the Chargers game is going to be on Saturday that week so there’s a good chance or a chance at least is that good source um it’s for somebody who works at an NBC affiliate who told me that they were alerted to the potential that the Patriots might be playing and they’re one of the teams that are eligible for that um but that could be Sunday and Saturday or or a Sunday I like Saturday it’s got things oh but but now you like suay too now you have your Sunday and now you can watch games that would be a Sunday in Buffalo followed by a Saturday coming back home short week against the Chargers that’s not ET in stone I’m not reporting anything I’m just saying that’s on the table that’s all yeah but you got the West Coast com roll all the cliches out get them all out yeah tough on a short week for that West Coast team to come weather game for Chargers you know how that goes yeah well you saw the Dome team today struggleing the elements uh Mike final thought uh and your thought as they go to the buy I’m excited for Drake may I want to watch Drake May over these last four games I’m sure he won’t mail it in so that’s that’s what I’m here for watch him especially against Buffalo see him play up in Buffalo how he looks um you know going against four really good teams so I think this will be a good opportunity for him to uh you know continue his growth process we love to see him not turn the ball over and in these games but uh just good opportunities for him that’s what it’s all about for me uh some other guys have good games along the way great but I’m not sure anyone if there’s enough time left for anyone to really change the narrative about this season um by the way you had said in the pregame show you wanted to see how Drake performed in the cold yeah I don’t know if it was cold enough but I like that he didn’t wear sleeves at all he didn’t look cold right I don’t know how cold it actually was but yeah I want I’m I’m going to reserve judgment till I see a bad day today was beautiful I thought it was a beautiful day to play um but that is something I am watching uh because he do you remember Fred when we had him in yeah and he talked about I never really played in bad weather yeah um so I I’m Buffalo yeah two in New England um in mid to late December into January figures at least one or two of those three games are going to be in bad weather they have like what 2 feet of snow in Buffalo today yeah they just showed on wind I’m looking I’m looking at wind you know as being something that is tough now the way that that he throws the ball like I I don’t think it’s going to be a huge problem he throws the ball he throws it through the wind right what concerns you as you’re going to the by week sir just the you know the overall mindset I I I do think that you said something in the pregame show at some point you need to have some tangible results and you need to win some games that’s what today hurts um you know I think it was a lost opportunity today I understand in the big picture why some of the the emailers don’t feel like that but at some point you want to establish a winning culture and they they lost an opportunity to to start that today the Patriots lose to the Indianapolis Cults 25 to 24 they dropped a three and 10 on the year oh I’m sorry it’s fine fine no no no Fred any profound thoughts to close it out no no no quick time out I personally I believe kind of I believe I led the whole thing off with Fred mentioned in the that he was concerned about potential business decisions and I let him expand on that would you like would you like to say something else after I think you know like you know going into next going into the buy I think the Patriots know that they’ve got their quarterback going into the buy I’ve got my tree I got my tree yesterday so I know that so I don’t have to worry about it it’ll be it’ll be a fire hazard probably in a week that’s all right certainly by the 20th yeah a lot of sap right 2524 the Patriots lose today to the Indianapolis Colts three and 10 on the year the bye is next for the Patriots for a whole cast of characters including Chris judge Josh Davis Dave sovich Nick poo uh Matt Morell great job
