podcast plural patriots.com the Patriots uh came off firing early ultimately fell short by just a field goal Paul PA your opening thoughts I mean I thought the Patriots played about as well as they’ve played all season long in the first half and they played the exactly the way they’ve played the rest of the season in the second half perfect too many mistakes too many uh self-inflicted wounds and um unfortunately you you caught buffalo on a day where they wanted to give you a game and you couldn’t take it yeah it’s frustrating frustrating cuz I was really encouraged by how they came out that was you know I think just to see Drake may come out that environment all this talk we’ve been saying all week about what they were up against with this Buffalo team tough environment to play no matter what what the what’s at the stakes for it um but you know too much turnovers that’s what it is right I mean geez three three turnovers three possessions second half game completely shifted and and they couldn’t they couldn’t counter punch they couldn’t stop the bleeding yeah the rre Stevenson fumble the uh the interception it was just um uh and then the the pass that ended up being recover In The End Zone it’s just um gross yeah just gross to to see uh the the team do it to itself once again after such a strong start so um let’s uh let’s get to our list here and then we’ll get to your good the bad hey what happened and the injured ah you are right G Good the Bad and the injured brought to you by the good players the bad players and the injured players we uh you don’t want to have like a little Meandering conversation for the first few minutes I didn’t even know what to do it myself we went to the good the bad the injured five minutes into the show um just a general conversation about who was who was okay in the game and who wasn’t okay and who might have gotten hurt before we do I have you know I I still listen and watch the show and I I believe it was called out either last week or the week before when you started talking about the players that played really well and it was brought to the host get so mad it was brought to the host’s attention that you know we should be talking about this you know during the good part right or the bad part like Paul will subtly try to be like I mean this will probably come up in The Good the Bad and the injured which we should be doing right now but yeah yeah whatever whatever you know people people do things differently all right uh Deuce let’s start with you your first good yeah I’m going to I’m going to put Drake May on there I know that there was definitely uh you know some plays he’d like to have back that I’d like to have back for him but I just I saw him do tonight what he’s going to need to do to be successful in the NFL and in that first half and I just had such confidence in him you know though the way that he was playing it just I mean he had the confidence that’s what was that was what was coming through the screen to me um you know I just I I’m not sure I’ve been more impressed with him in a you know short stretch of football than I was in that first half tonight to come out like that in that environment I mean we kind you know I make make a big deal out of playing on the road in Buffalo in the cold all those things but he looked lights out right there I mean I I think that might have been you know some of the best football we’ve seen of him all season long and you know to do it in that environment to do it in this situation I I just was impressed no question you could probably have plenty of reasons to put them on the down list as well but um for me tonight I just I really my biggest takeaway is coming away encouraged and saying you know what we might have a chance down the road to to threaten this team and it’s not going to be this season clearly they got a lot of work to do uh but I think we have the quarterback that you know I have at least a little confidence that someday we’re going to go back up to Buffalo and we’re going to see Drake May execute a full 60 minutes and the first 30 minutes tonight was proof to me that that he’s capable of it well you know that first touchdown that was really a great catch by booty great catch I mean the throw was terrific but the catch I’m going to fight you when it dropped right in his hands he may have he may as well have had like you know go go gadget arms and extended his arm 30 yards down field and put the ball in Booty’s hands and I have to listen to the guys talking an unbelievable unbelievable catchow the ball any more perfectly than May through that touchdown pass I I’d also just say I’m so you don’t want to give booty any credit for catching the ball that was thrown into his hands sure he he caught it it’s more than I can say for the the bills guy who in the end zone dropped this I I I do think though you know it’s it’s probably a good time just to you know mention a couple of his bad plays cuz I do think you you know you’ve got to acknowledge uh you know maybe miscommunication there with Hooper on that interception I you know I’m not sure I think we we’ll probably get into some discussion about the the the behind the line of scrimmage pass that you know ended up being a fumble was that on May was that on Stevenson um the probably a little bit of of question there but you know just overall though I I just come away feeling really encouraged about the kid it it’s you know and I’m with Mike I I didn’t have this was another game I didn’t have mon list at all but um I would Echo everything Mike said about the you know how good he looked in the first half I don’t think he looked very good in the second half but I thought he was better in the first half than than he was ineffective if that makes sense yeah I thought he was more good than bad his good was gooder than his bad was bad perfectly put Mike thanks um everything Mike said about just the Poise I thought that they really went after him I thought it was a strange game plan by Buffalo defensively um and I know that he has not been great Under Pressure but there’s a between being under pressure and selling out with some blitzes and whatnot I thought they gave him a lot of easy throws in the first half because the tight ends of who he’s been going to and the tight ends um in the first half both Hunter uh Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper were were open on these key plays because I thought they were sending too many guys and sending linebackers and those are the guys that’ be in the in the passing Lanes so I agree with Mike about May in the first half he was totally in command could I just ask you a question Paul just a little aside we’re not going to get off it but do you think this will affect how Buffalo see I mean maybe the game doesn’t meet anything in two weeks but in a vacuum do you think that might affect on on what the game plan is next it’s a great question and I’m you know we’ll we’ll ask Evan on Tuesday because we’re not smart enough to answer that kind of stuff but I just thought it was a little bit of a strangely aggressive cuz you don’t need to do that to put pressure on the passer against the Patriots yeah and I thought that they kind of recklessly affected their coverage at times especially given all the guys they were missing in the secondary I just thought it was strange but I I would uh there’s not not enough good things to say about May in the first half again I don’t think he was very good in the second half I think he was part of the problem in the second half but he was really really good in the first half you know the the ability to survive on that U second touchdown Drive surviving the Fall start and the holding call which would have derailed has derailed drives for the Patriots earlier this season they got past him got up 14 nothing that think about that that they’re up 14 nothing against the bills in Buffalo I mean nobody saw that coming and as much as you wanted the the quick start what’s that I certainly didn’t no and as much as duy wanted in the pregame the you know the really fast start it was um that’s a really fast start and it didn’t require them getting you know some special team score it didn’t require them getting a miracle pick six which you rightly pointed out was less likely them than them jumping out to a 14 14 nothing lead on offense that’s exactly what they did Y and um you know it was it was both execution it was overcoming a little adversity on those on those penalties and uh it was it was an impressive impressive start especially for Drake may he absolutely belongs on the good list overall in totality we’ll get to the bad stuff later on but it’s going to be plays and it’s not overall Drake May on my good list yeah you guys absolutely could sell me on that I I could live with that all right who is on your good list Paul um so just the before we move off of May I would just say I would add um and I had because I originally put May SL you know the AP open I I just thought maybe it’s because it was something that I was calling for in the pregame so I’m a little bit more partial to it I thought they opened it up they threw the ball downfield they get a pass interference they throw the ball downfield they get a touchdown to Booty like early in the game you put it in the other team’s head they might they might try to get behind it we’re going to and then all of a sudden what happens throughout the rest of the first quarter and into the second you’re getting these easy little throws underneath you know uh to the tight ends and I I just thought that they had a nice game plan um that really worked well I thought he called a really good game uh Alex Van Pelt obviously at the end you know that last drive just takes far too long to get a yard you know you’d like to think you wouldn’t need eight plays to get a yard or whatever it was and you know five penalties to score a touchdown but I thought there was a a really good game plan on both sides of the ball but I I thought particularly offensively in the first half all right um I wish I had the stat up but Paul stole my charger got some uh for the entirety of the game so now uh my Microsoft Surface is dead and I can’t get is the little light on on the side the little light is on on the side and and when I try and Power It Up should be good you should be good shortly oh how long does it take let it juice I just I got to let it juice for a while let juice for a little bit it’ll get get fired up that’s not good nothing works like a Microsoft Surface it’ll be another second that’s all right good fast oh that’s my bad what he you don’t have you don’t have the stats okay Hunter Henry the first one I wrote down yeah uh I had I had Hunter Henry and Hooper but who uh Henry is special yeah four for 39 touchdown was his stats okay that’s um again he is Drake May’s closest thing he has to a go-to Hooper four for 55 too so Hooper’s making a case both as as being a go-to guy but the go-to guy right now is still Hunter Henry and he was in this game he’s getting pretty close to AMD arriv Ral Hooper I mean that’s pretty lofty I don’t know if he if he’s going to see that much action you want to talk about an action figure it’s it’s Matt Hooper arriving on Amity Island okay he’s got the duffel bag he’s looking you know he doesn’t know where to go we’re veering off topic um this is awfully early for this what time is it 750 no we’re good uh yeah no I I I thought I mean throw that first third down catch uh from Henry I mean that first one right there crossing you know nice throw by may but you’re right and good to see Henry get you know another touchdown and he only second of the Year hard to believe but uh he continues to be offensive MVP that’s you know I’ve been saying it for a few weeks now okay he’s been a huge player for me all right good let’s go back to you Deuce what do you got uh I’m going to go Antonio Gibson Antonio Gibson um again did have a fumble uh which is would have put him on the down list but he just continues to bring a spark to me uh in that run game and I think we had a caller who C called in and said you know rre not a great fit for this running scheme it’s just I think Gibson is a good fit and he’s really been coming on uh I thought he brought a spark numerous carries today uh in terms of stats you know 10 carries 28 yards not great say yeah but this would be one of those if I if if this was see I can I can do this to you and I know you won’t get mad when I do it to mad he gets very upset you know what’s funny though does he get does he get does he get hurt his feelings are hurt you know I maybe I’m nuts cuz I didn’t even look at his stats until I had him on the good list and I thought the play was a kick return He gave him a little spark right right at the beginning gives him he gets out over the 40 yard line I wrote that down but uh I don’t think I don’t think he gave much of a spark today I mean I feel stupid right now I got to be honest it’s one of those things where you’re watching the game and you’re like all right good play good play I’m making checks and then I put it and then now I look at the stats and I’m like those aren’t good stats at all Andy fumble and you have the stats in front of you I don’t even have that do I do so maybe that’s my bad um but I still think he was part of you know I thought he had some Sparks in some plays maybe it was limited and you know I got to go back and look at the tape to uh affirm that but uh you know this one of those situations where I don’t just go off the box score immediately and that was an impression I had during the game maybe it was wrong maybe not but there he is idiot oh look at that um so 28 yards what are you thinking that’s ridiculous I don’t all right we don’t have to tobor it uh my next guy would be kaan booty yeah I thought he was you know that flash that he had like Houston um whatever the game after Houston what you know in that in that area when Drake May first um started being the he had the big catch against the Jets that set up the the game-winning touchdown you know at the toward the end of the game from brassette I thought he more closely resembled that that guy today um what do he have he had five for 95 in a touchdown we just saw the booty reception that everybody in the room watching you dece Tamara everyone is said did he catch that yes he caught it yes he caught it idiot I didn’t call you an idiot I said yeah he caught it yeah but it was that tone I think Tamara had the tone you have to watch her sometimes but I I don’t know I thought catch and it absolutely was a catch I just thought in the moment I’m like yikes that looked a little trappy it was not I thought uh I thought booty was was pretty good today I I did great catch great touchdown catch right I mean unbelievable I I mean I don’t know if that was as good as like I don’t know say gronowski catch against Denver down by the goal line that year whatever year Michael no 14 14 I was there great game uh yeah five for 91 or five for 95 and as you said the touchdown all right uh absolutely put him in there um let me um actually Paul you’re up next I think that was no that was booty that was me booty was you is back to me I think so I love the fake punt I loved it I loved it I wanted to see more of this throughout the season I thought it was a I thought you know it was it terribly gutsy based on where they were in the game and field position it was it was gutsy is but just the fact that they tried it and did it and yes that they pulled it off they I’m looking at the replay now of course uh he didn’t get it no no no I didn’t they did not need the 25 the yellow line is before the 25 I was like I I’m surprised this like they they weren’t taking a look at this but he got he got the first down cuz he gets to the 25 and he didn’t need the 25 love the aggression I mean this is what everybody’s been talking about like you got nothing to lose like just just go for it some of these situations they obviously you know came into the game prepared like that and you know along with some of the Drake May uh quarterback runs which I don’t think were all that effective at least top of my head I mean I don’t really remember them being but fourth down he got like 13 yards at the end of the game but the game was kind of over at that point um but yeah I had the fake pun on my list too Hardy I did too um I’m getting really I’m really looking for a conflict because I know you tend to get a little bit personnic with me when I disagree with you so I’m I’m hoping that I disagree with you I I don’t want I don’t want to force it I don’t want to force it but you’re right I do thrive on the conflict Joey slly did hit all his extra points I didn’t even realize that Hardy loves the kickers um I’m I’m kind of get I’m the only I’m the only one who who cares about kickers including owners GMS anyone else yeah Nick Folk though more only only no pretty much anybody who’s the one guy we’re going to guarantee to be relying on to put points on the board kicker who are we going to think the least about when we’re putting together our roster each every season the kicker kicker yeah that’s right gustowski uh Adam vinary they’re a dime a dozen yeah they’re all the same how dare you that proves my points you don’t mean that now you’re just saying it to get a rise out every once in a while one will have a really bad year like Chad Ryland did last year yeah but look at him now right yeah game time kicks s overtime they still lost though um I’m getting into play territory here I just did yeah like single plays but I just did I’m going to uh I’m going to put M mapu on there I know that so I had mapu on my list yeah I know he center fielder on that interception um and I didn’t love I mean we can all discuss the decision to bring it out a little bit iffy there um but I just I I lik I mean a nice pass def defense uh I thought he was effective and for a guy that has been in and out of the lineup in a forc fumble just looked active and you know made some place yeah it’s it’s it’s amazing like you know you get a second-year guy that you thought was sort of versatile and he’s not a healthy scratch this week and he makes some plays I I think that’s a really good sign people ask you every week Mike what are some of the things you’re hoping to see down the stretch I know the seasons are playing out the string I want to see young players contributing well Marty Mar is a young player I know he’s not a rookie but he’s only in his second year mapu contributed and you need to find out if that’s something that you can count on going forward or not yeah so he went from playing I want to say 40 some odd snaps in the the blowout loss in Miami to a healthy scratch yeah that doesn’t make any sense to me so I was glad to see him back out there today and I I would definitely co-sign on your good list inclusion do you have are you down to plays on your good list Paul or instances or so I also want I also want to give a little love to Demarcus Covington I talked about AP I thought uh the plan they had uh bothered Buffalo a little bit in the first half that you know they were talking about I think Charles Davis said on the broadcast they played a lot of single high safety with man coverage I might have been during the the halftime break the the guys in the in the studio might have said it and I thought they made Josh Allen hold on to the ball a little bit um he clearly didn’t look like he wanted to run as much today as he has been probably felt like it wasn’t one of those games where he needed to run to win the game um and I thought they kind of frustrated him a little bit and he flung a couple downfield um one of which that mapu picked off and wasn’t really able to make a lot of plays in the game so I thought the game plan that they had defensively worked I thought they played much better defensively today than they have say in the last month yeah so I want to give Covington a little love too very good um I’m ready to move on to the bads unless you got anything else I’m ready to move on all right let’s move on to the bats yeah it was no clean up hul you usually have a couple I had I had Christian Ellis made a couple couple of good tackles a for that were like open fiish and just good plays but again plays I just thought one that one I I think it might be the same one we’re talking about just nice play execution by the bills a lot of times you see those plays it gets lost in the wash and all of a sudden the Run running back’s coming out of a way you didn’t expect I just thought he did a good job reading through all that making the tackle um but I had that too just you know One play I don’t I don’t know how much else he did in the game but I’m with you all right now we can move on to the bads dues what’s the first one on your list run defense run defense I think it’s just been bad all year and I just think it’s a really hard way to live and it it always looks the same you know they just they don’t play together it’s it all looks discombobulated you’ve got some guys upfield you’ve got some guys getting pushed back there’s all kinds of creases in this defense uh there were at least two big big runs uh I think the first two of them were I think on like the first play of the drive too first first or second play um both by James Cook see the touchdown here by James Cook which was you know just about 50 yards I mean 11 carriers for 100 yards I mean it’s just you know that’s yeah but one of them was for 46 that’s what you always do to me and 50 on the other 10 yeah which is five a carry okay well you’re making it sound like he had 10 yards a carry and I’m just pulling a pillo that’s all I’m 54 in the other 10 yeah and and three three catches on three targets for you know 26 yards in a tutty too um but just the run defense I think that’s a it’s a good place to start this offseason trying to put that back together uh whether it’s improving the linebacker play whether it’s you know upgrading some of the tackles inside on early Downs you know you’re seeing guys out there that you know just it’s not effective enough and it looks the same every week and I mean I just you guys are probably get sick getting sick of me talking about it because it just every time it’s you know it’s it’s not like a straight oh just the whole it’s like they just kind of weave right through everybody and then they’re gone it’s a same thing every week with that run defense I thought it was big key to the loss now just to show you I am firm but fair yes uh run defense was on my list but it was second because I didn’t even put it down there after the first couple of big runs I’m like okay it’s Buffalo it’s James Cook they’re going to get some runs my my my first Babble which we’ll get to in a minute happened I guess after you know some of those runs but I want to give them some time okay you don’t have to be perfect you know you don’t have to be perfect to stay off the bad list but run defense did make it on there and yeah there were there were times when some of the tackling issues presented themselves more often than not than than that though I think it was just they were finding big holes in the defense and exploiting those holes no I I totally agree um it was a huge problem in my view um throughout the day and and that’s the way it finished you know you needed to you know desperately try to get the ball back at the end you got all three timeouts One play first down game over like you know Ty Johnson comes in he’s really the kind of third down scatback type six carries 30 yards yeah yeah it’s the third highest rushing total they’ve allowed this season um and they’ve been up over 150 yards a few times I mean 193 to Miami 192 to Houston 167 at the Titans I mean they it it hasn’t been good all year um let me ask you something Duce just from an ex’s nose standpoint on the defense the well the the philosophy and the methodology between the Patriots and other teams it wasn’t unique to them but for years their Mantra was to guard your section of the field that was you know whether they were in a zone or not there were still you know there were guys even even in some man coverage they were still responsible for certain areas have they gotten away from that or are they just not great at executing it anymore um you know I I think that they’ve tried to get back to the schemes playing man defense that you know I think that they’re good at that they’re built for that they’re suited but I to me it really all starts up front where they’re just they’re consistently not playing together and we’ve talked about defenses even if you’re not the most talented team stopping the run you know building the wall as they say all being you know in line holding your blocker up shedding the block getting to the Back Field I mean those are things that you’ve seen plenty of um and they just they aren’t able to do it like I said there there’s there’s no consistency to the front there’s a lot of seams and there aren’t linebackers who have the anticipation or the speed to get there and anticipate where those plays are going to be so they’re just you know overly exploited and I thought when Buffalo was struggling early on it was just go to the Run go to the run I mean this is you know and you saw that the Run brought those Sparks still can’t get it it won’t work the light the light is still on right but no one’s home it just won it won’t come on I blame you I it’s my fault you should blame me it is Maya Kula my my bad um what else for a bad so obviously the turnovers are you know the biggest factor in the game but I I just the fumbles to me are just they’re piling up and Gibson and Stephenson had one each Stephenson’s seventh of the season that’s a lot of fumbles for a running back that’s a lot of fumbles you know quarterback you know you get strip sacked or whatever sometimes you have a particularly bad year with that there’s no excuse for a running back losing the ball seven times they’re lucky they haven’t lost more of them quite frankly they only lost one of those two fumbles by the running backs today um it just it the ball security is a problem and you know that’s that that’s a big part of you know the I thought the endzone pick was was a bad you know a bad play it’s it’s someone’s fault I mean clearly Drake throws the ball to the front pylon Hooper’s at the back pylon I don’t know who’s at fault but the play had no chance and I think it’s utterly inexcusable to throw a pass backwards by Design unless it’s trick play and that certainly didn’t look like a trick play um you know and ultimately the play that ends the game right yeah you know you’re still you’re still holding out hope they’re down three with the ball 10 you know 10 minutes left you still you’re very much in the game that end of the game and you just can’t turn the ball over like that three times in the second half just a horrific performance offensively in the second half speaking of trick plays and laterals and stuff at the end of the first half Paul would you put the sequence of plays the Patriots tried running on the bad list cuz I was all for it let’s take a out here let’s move the ball I didn’t put it on the bad list um to me it’s kind of it’s emblematic of of a lot of things I you I so we were joking around during the game all of this stuff about the the they got to design some runs for Drake May and that’s the topic dour and you know they’re hammering it all week and what do the Patriots do they cater to the masses because they’re obviously listening and here we go this is the week we we went from we’re trying to get Drake May to the Finish line without getting injured so now we’re going to dial up a handful and I have no problem that they’re running the ball with Drake may but it just seems so transparent that everybody’s complaining that you’re not running Drake May that this is the week we run Drake May okay but let me let me play and that to me goes into that category Hardy okay this is why I brought them both up how many times did they just like take a knee at the end of the half and it was like they have no balls they’re not going after what are they doing so now you got like 12 seconds left right sounded like so you got like 12 seconds left you have no chance to score so well not with that added now we’re going to run a we’re going to run a shallow cross and start lateraling the ball like that that’s what that I mean that’s smart we got balls now but that’s really bright okay that was just useless useless you say catering to the masses you you and your number one number two maybe a little bit to the owner if if if somebody was asking questions about it but more to the point and I think what I believe or would like to believe happened in this case the masses absolutely right hey why don’t we have some designed run plays for Drake May the guy’s great on his feet I have no problem with that it’s it’s coincidental that the masses and maybe the owner maybe a bunch of other people were calling for it at the same time they it finally dawned on them that oh with here’s a way to pick up three or four yards almost guaranteed the handful of times we try it why not do that it’s just coincidence Paul I just I don’t have any problem that they did it it’s not a coincidence that they did it this week it’s not they got pounded all week for not doing it and that’s why they did it this week and I would rather them take the bill bellich approach and say ignore the noise and just play and do what we think is right if they thought that it’s right that we want to make sure that we get Drake made at the Finish Line without getting injured then stick to it I don’t have to agree with it I would run them Mike and I have been calling for runs in the red zone for Drake May all season but we don’t like we’re not the coach well maybe they’re catching up on the Patriots unfiltered podcast and they’re just now hearing it maybe it’s actually from weeks ago Fair Point okay they’ve got they got a bunch in the queue and they’re just now getting a chance to listen to them they’re busy um trying you had a question as we watched the final Patriots touchdown Drive whether or not a touchdown Drive could make it onto the bad list oh perfect I believe that it can so I didn’t put it on the bad list per se but oh I did the run before the two-minute War is on the bad list you know you remember the Rams game with Buffalo a couple of weeks ago and Josh Allen had all the touchdown runs and passes they tried the quarterback sneak and Tom Brady immediately is on it that just ended the game well this one isn’t quite as egregious but that gets it to the two-minute warning that’s a sneaky important element there that cost you a timeout Yeah by running because that gets the ball down to the two-minute warning and now that kind of made you go for the the onside kick you didn’t have to have to go for the onside kick but you kind of had to like Charles Davis said they don’t have to but they have to and you know and I think if they had scored there with say you know what two there’s 214 left if they had thrown the ball into the end zone there’s say 210 left well now you you can kick off you get the two-minute warning coming so that’s like four chances to stop the clock yeah that’s a bad play call I know you’re expecting to get in from the one on the first play but in that situation it’s not worth the risk I feel like with this drive you could break down like three or four different things that were on the bad list I mean I think there was also a delay of game on Third and one I had that too uh that you had to back up and I just I’d do what you did Hardy I’d put it all under that Banner just that last Drive where you know so impressed with how they came out of the game exactly what they needed to do two drives exactly what they needed to do understood the situation of the game went out there executed this team has got a long way to go to learn how to do those final drives how how to play it play the clock as you said play the situations uh it took them forever it took them forever can I interrupt for a Red Zone yes so you remember the play to Le pora that we were talking about earlier for the Lions game that Lions guys he like hell yeah I I think they’re talking about it right now on on NBC football night in America and I think that that they might like this is what happens when you just watching Red Zone I think it was a plan oh I think it was a designed play to have them both fall down pretend they’re falling down okay so I heard somebody mention that and I thought they were goofing on it but you you saw it and it well they they just replayed it and like they had like a banner up there lion I you know and I think they were trying to make them and if you watch jir Gibbs he kind of Dives on the ground on purpose wow and I I think it was by Design all right fascinating like like this is it seems like there’s a little bellich chick in that like every time he made a mistake it was by Design but like this I in watching the replay which I didn’t get a chance to see a replay of it earlier it kind of looks like they’re right this was a a design trick play yeah when when we were getting ready to watch the the start of the Patriots broadcast there was a there was a highlight that ran and I heard something to that effect but I didn’t get a chance to see it either I just I I don’t want to let this last touchdown the touchdown drive you guys were really hot on this during I mean again it starts with a first and goal at the Buffalo 8 with 226 left which turned into a first and goal at the Buffalo 4 after the um the encroachment call okay okay so there’s encroachment is called now it’s first and goal at the Buffalo 4 226 second a goal at the at the Buffalo 4 223 you get down with let’s see there was the pass interference twice I believe there were two pass interference there were five penalties on the bills on that drive five five your first and gold the Buffalo won with 214 left and still you get to the two-minute warning you still haven’t punched it in and I said right about that time they’re going to fiddle F around did and they’re going to get it down and they’re going to have 90 seconds left before they score how much time was left on the clock when they finally SC I believe it was 113 113 it’s pretty good and uh they wasted a minute 13 seconds when they were first and goal at the four you really got to hand it to ra mcder he really had his team locked down and ready to play and avoiding the let down five penalties on that last D up 10 five unbelievable so yeah I I mean I put it on the bad list that’s bad because at that point yeah you’re going to if if everything doesn’t even go well if it just kind of goes you’re getting in the end zone don’t take a minute and 13 seconds of game time to do it which is what they did and that’s what lost them the chance to at least tie the game more than anything was time it ended up being about time and you wasted half of the time that was left on the clock literally half of the time at 226 you waste a minute 13 to go four yards that’s what caused you the chance to tie that game yeah I I largely agree with you I I just thought like as soon as they scored the touchdown I said when is a touchdown drive on a on a bad right I just thought like there wasn’t a lot of urgency there was like 20 25 seconds between plays um you know Drake may just drops one of the snaps it was perfect snap he just drops it yeah pushes them back I mean they were very fortunate they were very tight with those pass interference calls yeah um you know especially the second to last one the one on booty wasn’t really much contact there at all on that one that would have been fourth down had they not called it um I just feel like you’re down 10 late in the game it’s got to be pedal to the metal I totally agree I mean obviously we were all very fortunate to watch a number of game-winning drives over the Patriots 20-year run of dominance and you know we know what it takes for those kind of drives and I think just that whole thing and everything that been said in the last five minutes about that drive just illustrates they showed some positive stuff in the first half but you see how far they have to go to really be a championship kind of team that can you know when when the chips are down and you got to have it and you’re tight with your execution everybody’s on the same page you know you don’t need five penalties from the from the team you know that that’s that’s going to be the thing that that they have to get to what did you guys think of the decision in 833 to go fourth and six down 10 punt I was a little torn on that one to be honest like I part of me just wanted them to go for it and then but I was questioning am I just being stupid because I just want them to be aggressive to be aggressive um but I wouldn’t had a problem with it though if they were aggressive just to be aggressive I think you got to go for it I think that was one of those thing you know and I’m sure that wasn’t this reasoning but you know when people say like they’re just trying to not lose by a lot like if you don’t get the fourth and six the bills probably go down and just run the ball you know 40 yards for a touchdown you know they end up getting 30 points which I think everybody you know who cares like who cares about stupid you know records like that that are meaningless and you know you end up you know you played so well in the first half and you still end up down 17 I think I think that was a a punt like it was almost like a concession and I I didn’t like it I didn’t like the decision to punt there well and but part of it was was because they had a third and five instead of a third and one because of the delay of game call so that put him in a situation where they it was like third and inches too yeah they were even less likely to pick up the uh the first down there so no I didn’t like it I what what was the yard line on that if you have it up there I want to say it was like the 40 yard line at the oh I don’t know 46 so 46 yard line like there know fourth and six from the 46 yard line I think you got to go for that yes yeah I wanted him to but you know I’m an idiot you know me too I want I want him to go for it a lot more than they should uh more bads there Deuce oh yeah I got a couple um deantre Jacobs had what a few false starts you know I I just overall the offensive line wasn’t great tonight but at least for the most part they cleaned up their penalties at least the other guys had and I thought they were decent in the Run game I thought there was some holes that those guys uh got I mean Stevenson was effective when you know just the fumble kills you yeah you know Stevenson five you know 12 for 60 five yards a carry seems like Jacobs was the was kind of the only one they couldn’t just get on the straight and arrow with the penalties tonight all right um I didn’t have I didn’t have a ton of different things on the bad list today which is kind of strange I just gonna Kendrick Bourne too I I just want more out of him and he’s just continues to be up and down he had another catch third down catch where he’s short of the sticks you just saw the play there where they tried to run an end around to him that was you know going to be caught short uh if Buffalo hadn’t encroached uh I believe but no that was the I think get that first down sorry the delay of game so and and and the Kendrick waren short of the sticks when when they showed it from the sideline he got it he got the first down yeah they just didn’t give it to him it was a terrible spot after that too two catches are we talking about oh we’re I think we’re talking about a different play I think you’re talking about the one where he was coming back for the ball and he ended up going he cost himself the first down by going back you were talking about one he got tackled sort of with his back yes which was very close that’s why we’re grateful for Hardy for for Paul’s photographic memory there Hardy’s right that was um that was closer than the spot the spot was it was a bad spot after today as far as how Drake May played and there seems to be some sort of congealing of his movement with the offense so that’s that’s it seems to be sort of the best case scenario Drake is moving forward but we’re still into high draft position he’s proven he can do it now we know what we kind of need you know a St receiver I’m asking you guys I know you you poo pooed my Travis Hunter last week which ah by the way I live in the same town as Mike Rob and also Anthony favano and I asked them both they both said that Travis Hunter they would go with Travis Hunter if they were the they were the patriots who do you guys think as wide receiver one wide receiver away we should go where did where did did you ask them this question you know well Christian I just say like look I’m I’m not saying no on Travis Hunter but will you allow any debate for other positions it just seems like you know I’m not going to be totally lo I think he’s worth considering but I also think that there’s a counterargument that if he ends up you know being more of a cornerback that this team might have other needs like I I wouldn’t I’m not going to be dissatisfied with picking him I think he’s an excellent player I just you seem like there’s that’s the only option and everything else is just out the window which that’s where I divert from that no what I what I I understand that what I didn’t want to have happened was in any way start the trade down nonsense that we’ve been doing we need a superior athlete like that can that can help us offensively no trading down piing the best players at the seventh and Ninth let’s go for the best freaking offensive weapon we can get so are you are you not open to like um you know Fielding any trade offers to see what what possibly could be available well B what is available it’s a really deep uh defensive uh end class that’s great we need that perfect it’s a really it’s also a really de that’s not what I I I what I asked is like you’re just saying I don’t want this trade down nonsense well how do you know you don’t want to trade down if you don’t know what the trade is like you need information before you make a decision and if someone wants to offer you this great if someone wants to offer you a great offer you know a great you you can get some multiple picks and instead of getting one good player and in a dra by the way that’s widely considered to be lacking in Blue Chip prospects why not you know see if you can add you know the mik do so Theory and and add multiple picks like I don’t know what anybody’s willing to offer maybe no one wants to move up I think that’s probably more likely as no one’s going to want to move up but if they do and someone wants to get silly why not at least entertain it I I I I think closing yourself off to any possibilities without knowing the you know the uh the information to me is kind of silly but but gentlemen what’s out there that besides the top sort of five players that really is going to put us in a position to make a significant move forward to trying to win the division I I would argue I would argue that the top five players aren’t going to make you make you move that way either what they need I don’t know it’s available because the information’s not available yet I don’t know what anybody’s willing to offer and I and I also don’t think any of the to the the so-called top five players are going to be difference makers they desperately need a left tackle I don’t know of any left tackle that’s considered uh up there in the in the top five as we talked about in the pregame show the one guy that they could draft number three overall right now projects to not even play tackle he might be a guard so you want you want to hang on to it and and take him yeah so I mean what I’m saying okay if what is the lowest you guys are willing to go in the first round then I without first like this is like you know so my son right now is getting a bunch of college acceptance letters right oh mle yeah he has his heart set on one particular he wants to go to the Citadel okay and I’m like that’s fine if that’s ultimately where you want to go and where we decide to go but we don’t make that decision now because we do not have all the information yet you’ve gotten into several schools you’ve gotten into Coastal Carolina highp Point University of South Carolina and the Citadel why not wait because he was early action on all of those we don’t have all the financials for any of them that’s not that’s no way to make a decision no no and he’s all you know help I want to I want to put in the offer I want to put in my deposit no you wait someone might offer you three first round picks to move up three spots right like who knows of what someone’s going to do you don’t know until you find out what is the lowest you guys were willing to go in the first round without first pick for how much I you’re not really listening Christian I’ll go to 20 if someone’s going to give me four first round picks to do that yeah I’d go to 32 if you’re gonna give me first round picks for the next five years yeah like if you want to give me like three four five first round picks to move down 20 spots sign me up but if our first pick is number 20 that guy’s never gonna have the kind of impact we need to move the team forward how do you know our first I like I’m not like you I don’t know exactly how every player is going to pan out I didn’t really think I at 3 and 12 I could get passionate in the postgame show but here I am Christian thanks for the call buddy I appreciate it we how do you know like how do you know Travis Hunter is going to be the best player in this draft I you see this is this is my point though in this particular draft I don’t know if any of the top also sure that there are some very knowledgeable football people out there that believe passionately that this team has nothing on the trenches on either side of the ball so yes trade down a little bit start stocking up on this defenser class there go and you you’re going to need multiple picks do you think you’re one look and I say too I think a lot of what Christian said totally right but at this point in late December I I can’t do this for the next four months of Travis hunter or bus that you know you got to at least consider the other options considering how much they need DeShawn in bills a game that you could have that you were in that you had a 14 nothing lead it it’s tough to swallow you think you’re close you just said it deuce in the draft last year you got a quarterback and you appear it appears that you have your quarterback for some time you’re going to have to be cont and you should be you know really happy that you have your quarterback there’s a lot of work left to do it would have been nice if you could have really hit on maybe one more position but you didn’t instead all you got was the most important player on the entire team you it’s going to have to suffice the quarterback it’s not like great we’re like they got to move like quick and start putting things in place around him maximize the rookie contract like they said they are aware of doing with M Jones so really my only kind of topic is like I feel like first half coaching was doing really well coaching was winning the game second half coaching I feel was kind of kind of losing the game lot of other uh factors there as well right but you know we got uh we got booty at almost 100 yards players making plays you know we’ll go in the offseason either in the draft or we’ll trade for some wrs cuz we’re the most cap space but what changes need to happen in coaching for us to have that kind of first half experience like throughout a normal 17 Game season you know like apart from just like the penalties like what changed in in in the coaching in those halfs I felt like I was we regressed severity and you know that’s like a key key component as coaching just start it is a key component but I don’t think it was coaching in the second half I I think it was execution I think you had players not making plays that they were making in the first half I mean I would I would definitely have gone for the V down but like other what was the coaching problem in the second half well the punting thing was a bit you know you can do it in any other way right so you could say they were aggressive early on and then they weren’t uh then they punted it then you know so I figured it’s some of it’s uh yeah I mean defensively like it’s just like there were just like um bad some bad some couple of bad plays called um and then like defensively it was just like they just started steamrolling us at a certain point and we just they’re a lot better like I I I would say this you do and thank you for the call the randr Stevenson fumble was not a coaching issue I mean they turn B over three times in the second half one for a touchdown and and to be fair Paul maybe the Drake May interception in the touchdown maybe that was coaching maybe they weren’t on the same page in terms of where they were coach’s fault do I mean do you I mean if you had to guess would you guess that that was a coaching eror or one of the players made a mistake one of the players made a mistake if I had to guess but at least you could somehow wrap your head around it being something to do with the way they’re coached the fumble is not the fumble is just not being able to hold on to the ball you know and like I said unless there was a trick play dialed up on the lateral there’s no way that that Ball’s supposed to be thrown backwards correct that play had no chance at all no and you know defensively they they that defensively they gave him 10 points in the second half they scored seven in the first half like legit and seven in the second half legit yep really I mean they the the field goal comes off of the fumble which is actually I thought a pretty good job by the that was one of the better games the defense has played since I don’t know Chicago yeah I’d agree and especially given the opponent that you’re facing now listen everything that everybody talked about all week maybe the bills will do X Y and Z well the bill did X Y and Z the bill slept walked through the game but that that doesn’t take away anything that the Patriots did they tackled better today that I thought as I said um in the good list I thought Covington did a nice job with um that single high look that clearly sort of frustrated Josh Allen early on um and I thought that they did good uh they had good man coverage for the most part during the course of the day yeah they didn’t stop the run you know like you got to give them something you got to give up something against that offense you can’t you’re not going to shut I thought uh took away the inside um he was much better that’s a good good point Jose yeah thank you Jose we’re talking to yeah that that was Jose that we’re I’m just thrown off by Deuce leaving this he’s fleeing the interview he’s fleeing the interview I apologize for uh behind me that’s the play right there that I thought this play was made by Dugger um and if you could show that again Chris um you you get a a good look at how you know he sort of forces him to make a cut inside if he was able to just like bend it right to the sideline that’s a Josh Allen 15 yard run if you watch this Dugger right there forces him to change directions good and Keon white was athletic enough to make that tackle but I I think if he gets right to the sideline there he’s getting the first down yep watching it right there that’s very good and I thought this is the play by the way that he landed on his elbow uh maybe yeah the way he got up from that I think you I I think you identified it all right guy uh gave the fans of buffalo in the pregame he had to do it he was captur offensive offensive I think yeah I think they had him they had a gun to his head maybe probably in the the bills goog whatever the Buffalo Bills Mafia whatever they had he’s probably got great things to say about the fans up in Montreal too hey Nick in Montreal has Matt Smith ever been up there and just been uh completely uh hello Pascal thank you for joining us hey guys how’s it going good yo great so I’m good I’m good I’ve got two things um the first one is that as far as the game goes if you had told me that the Pats were going to have three turnovers and the bills were going to have one I would have thought that this would be about a 21 Point loss so three points you got to give the guys some kind of credit um I’m I’m pretty impressed with the way that they showed up especially Drake with almost subzero temperatures yeah um and then on the second one um for the draft to me offensive tackle is the hardest position to fill outside of quarterback and so the way I’m looking at it is I would really be happy if they addressed the front five and on offense and the front seven on defense in like the first four rounds of the draft because to me that’s really going to be what’s going to keep these guys competitive going forward um so hopefully they can get some good tackles they can get some good guys up front and after that Drake is really gonna make things happen I I hope you’re right Pascal and I hope there are players there that fit that description I just from what and believe me I abhor draft talk I truly do espe especially in December but if you know if the tackles aren’t there I don’t know what else you do because to me if if you’re going to if you’re going to build so many areas of this team wide receiver you can get wide receivers in free agency you can trade for wide receivers you can find teams that expensive but yeah it’s definitely easier to get a wide receiver in free agency than it is a tackle now now we’re talking in the pregame there are ways of getting tackles you can but it’s much tougher but yeah and you’re going to get a better player like T Higgins is better than any free agent tackle you’re going to ever sign like it’s rare that you get like Orlando Brown who signed especially like the modern NFL like the tackles just don’t get away they’re too valuable there’s too few coming out that really develop and I mean you’re seeing it now even some of the guys that you know we spent half like the summer kind of looking forward to the draft saying this kid Will Campbell looks really good this could be the guy and then all of a sudden doesn’t have a great year his arms short short arms comes out it’s it’s so hard it doesn’t feel like the college game is developing enough tackles to really fully Supply the need that exists in the NFL the only thing I would say you know like I and I get it like they do they need tackles and I agree with the caller uh Pascal that tackles are harder to come by but don’t deceive yourself into thinking that Drake may can get by with this cast because like they can’t move the ball and they can’t score this is a pretty consistent thing he’s playing great and they don’t score I mean they got an old by the way touchdown with a minute 13 left they had 14 points with a minute 13 left from their first two drives you know last week they had three points with 10 minutes left right like they can’t score with this cast of character so if you think that like you just fix the offensive line and Drake May is going to suddenly make all these guys look like better players that ain’t going to happen no that’s not enough um Nick and Phoenix emails I wanted to sit here and say Mayo has turned a corner with the way uh he called the first half however why are we punting down 10 with less than 10 minutes to go in the fourth I really want to questionable at best I really want to believe Mayo should be head coach going forward because it means the team is making strides but his decision making frustrating me be consistent with your aggressiveness what gives again Nick and Phoenix I guess I just you know I I agree with with the calls to be aggressive I just think there’s a line between aggressive and stupid and not to say that I think that that play was necessarily that over the line with that but I just I don’t want it to be like just go for it it doesn’t even matter like what just keep going for everything like you know I’m so glad that you said that uh like a lot of people do that like and I’m not this is not from CU we talked about this earlier no you can say that to go for it yeah go for it Rock no like it’s you’re 3 and 12 so you should go for fourth no if it’s the right call to go for it on fourth down you should and they more often than not this year in my opinion have not like I don’t want to go I don’t want to go for more because they’re three and 12 I do like you want to say that fake punt well what do we get to lose three and yeah okay all right that I can kind of like whatever you should go for third fourth and six from near Midfield down 10 with 8 minutes left you should go for that every time I understand what you’re saying if you’re 12 and three you should go for it if you’re three and 12 you should go for it you see I understand what you’re saying but I also think we always talk about like game situation like have a sense of where you are in the game and what it means what I think it’s okay to also have some season situational awareness and you see it week in and week out in the league especially this time of year teams going for it and going for wins when ordinarily they wouldn’t because we saw in New Orleans right same thing saw it with the Saints why not do it because that is that is season situational awareness you’re right and that’s a little different though like in your New Orleans that’s perfect example last week New Orleans Washington thank you okay so our see why not like just roll the dice see if we can get the two-point conversion in this game and win it we’re not going anywhere anyway right that is one that’s why I said I’m not dismissing like the record as being part I’m just saying I don’t want to go for fourth and 10 for my own 20 because I’m three and 12 you want go for it because it’s the right thing to do you know what I mean regardless but I think a lot of people like what do you got to lose no more puns like no that’s not how you play football that’s not how you learn how to play well that’s true then then then you’re you’re really doing yourself a disservice in terms of the development of the quarterback and everyone else and and I’d even like acknowledge like once or twice a year you want to go for go for line we’re going to be watching these last two games of yes I want them to be aggressive but the fourth down decisions um you know play calls in specific spots they shouldn’t be changed dramatically based on your record again you want to go for two-point conversion at the end because it doesn’t matter you know rather than go to overtime yeah like let’s just go for the win different yeah one play yeah um if you this is from uh Chad in Atlanta if you nuked the roster right now and hit the reset button who would you keep I’m struggling to name more than six players six okay so see if yeah he’s was even that the sequence of plays when they they were like nine plays inside the Buffalo 10 before they punched it in for a touchdown um I think they even got bailed out of of a delay game by uh encroachment on the defense but I think they were going to be a delay game on that one too so just them not being able to execute you know simple situations like picking up a yard we saw more of that um and the mistakes but overall I also think it was a good coaching performance you know by May and the staff I think for them especially the defense to come out like that um I agree and have that I thought it was a good I thought it was a good game plan today good game plan yep defensively the offense beat toes and I think one other thing to I want to come to Marty mau’s defense I think as he was getting tackled at the goal line coming out of the End Zone it seemed like he was going to be able to stay in the end zone but he got kind of got his leg pinned under the defender and he it seemed like he had to choose between coming out staying in the end zone and blowing out his knee I no I think blowing out his knee all he had to do was kneel all yeah as soon as he caught the ball he should have gone down you got to look at it you got to look at I looked at it five times had to reposition his body looked at it Paul look at his body would you look at the man’s body like he tried as hard as he could to just get the ball out of the go the goal line that’s after he got the leg pinned like Mike Mike made a comment that may be true that he looked like he may have had some space but he didn’t like there was a guy like right on him that wrapped him up by the by the hips and he fought like with everything he had to get out of the end zone which I I think he might have had a brain of the game they just couldn’t finish yeah and like the go hard go home at the start of the game and then start playing conservative to a degree after the first half was slightly off footing as we had that momentum and then we started losing it Los and then that slot backing the four well and then the you know Buffalo came out and asserted themselves on that first drive I mean what was nine plays 68 yards it didn’t take that long and it’s like you kind of had the sense then I you know just to be a a smart said well there you go and when they tied it at 14 I said there’s your game and Paul’s even Paul was like no no no you know have some patience have I said the Patriots have been moving the ball in the first half now to your point you ended up winning cuz the Patriots didn’t move it at all in the second half gave it away I I I just thought Buffalo kind of like you know got out of their own way a little bit and once they moved the ball as well as they did on that first drive of the second half I have a hard time really like I had a very small bad list today and it was all like about the turnovers yeah they did everything they could and can we get to start sleeping with arm that’d be nice I feel what was that sleeping with the ball got a carried around about Gibson why does no one ever talk about the other guy who fumbles Jake I’m going to let you go your phone’s are breaking up a little bit but thank you for calling in what do you do about Stevenson though I mean just and I and I’d say too I’ve caught a couple of bills shows bellich shows and he brought it up summation of the game like I thought the Patriots did everything they could to win the game and ultimately they just lost cuz the other team was so much better they played better than Buffalo Buffalo but Falcons are benching their quarterback for like a $60 million cap yet were you surprised though that after he fumbled then he had that you know he had a pretty good catch and run I think for for a third down he picked up a first down like I was kind of surprised just to see him right back in there this time I mean he did sit a little bit but I I’ve talked to you about this before like I just the ball again I’m not sure it would have just been you know business as usual for Buffalo I I just Buffalo had all the ear marks today of one of those teams you know that gets beat at home by a bad team yeah you know they just looked I mean how many penalties 11 12 I don’t know what the final number was but I mean just you know a Mindless turnover I know the turnover was meaningless because it was like a punt but that was just bad play by by Josh Allen he clearly looked like he didn’t want to run today um I think he only had four scrambles I don’t think they had any designed runs for him today 133 for 78 13 penalties like that’s a team that wasn’t mentally ready to play I mean what was having seen this Josh Allen team a few times now what was great was just I mean they had like two minutes of possession the first quarter like sitting there for minutes of the first half they they fixed that time of possession in the second half it was more than a 2 to1 ratio it was nine and change time of possession for buffalo in the first half and it ended up being almost dead even by the end of the game um let’s so they had the ball two to one in the second half essentially yeah didn’t seem like that uh Joel and San Antonio and then we’re going to hear from both Gerard mayo and Drake may but Joel you’re up first what do you got hey guys thank you for taking my call once again uh so to me uh today uh it it felt any show that maybe Buffalo was playing down to to us to the competition a little bit uh because uh to me and and I’m not educated in in any intricacies of football or anything like that I just watched the game uh but it looked to me like they weren’t just not into it that much that they were just not playing full speed and once they decided to kind of like okay we’ we’ve had enough of this that’s when the real Team kind of showed up and and you could see it like they were just moving the ball whatever and and they ended up obviously beating us uh uh pretty here today uh for our game plan you know obviously it starts with the quarterback um and in saying that you know we felt pretty good about the game plan and you I’m not really sure as far as points but you know when we talk about complimentary football and the offense being able to put together those long drives also helped us out so it all ties in together how much of a lesson learn lesson learning day is today for your rookie quarterback the battle and then just kind of the mistakes everything that he can learn from yeah that’s what makes Drake a very good player a special player his mentality of learning from his mistakes and he’s not a repeat eror guy as I’ve said before and we look forward to getting back out on the practice field and getting better two games oh I mean I’ve learned a lot I’ve learned a lot not only about this team but also about myself and we’ll continue to push forward and we’ll get better as I said earlier look the the standard the expectations still remain high no matter what you know where we play who we play it doesn’t matter you know the expectations is that we’re going to go out there and win football games what you see from obviously le start off with apologizing for some comments it seemed like he was able to bounce back to yeah you know just you know apologize like a man and and move forward move on you had mentioned before that by the end of the season you guys were hoping to be a really tough team to play against with that in mind reflect on this game a lot of people expecting how you how you think that yeah we never get into the expectations of people outside of our building um for me I think these guys they have the mindset to go out there and be physical have you know great mental toughness and try to win football games were they the tough team that that you’ve been hoping they beat look we got a bunch of tough guys in there and I you know I don’t question that um again though look we want to win football games and that’s why we’re here kind of Phil said coming to this week there’s kind of a a lot of questions going on around the team and everything else your 14-point Underdog you come in here against the team that’s you know playing for everything you’re three and 11 just kind of your thought on what they brought to the table today especially in that first half I’m very very proud of these men you know way they played and look a three-point loss to the bills in Buffalo yes y absolutely you should you should there’s there’s a lot to be taken away from this and I think he’s he’s probably feeling a little bit better all the noise going around this week and there was some talk of how this team performed in their final three games of the season I think that first quarter performance alone was enough to make him feel a little better about things overall and maybe the direction that this team could be going it’s just got to be more consistent and they’ve they they’ve still got things to clean up uh in in this case it was turnovers today and a couple of penalties down the stretch that ended up hurting them but if if Dr Mayo wants to overall feel good about this game today I can’t blame him you know 14-point dogs going into that spot a lot of people picking him to to lose by more than that and they gave him a game we all did yeah yeah I mean I oh no you didn’t Matt did no right yeah right you don’t get to pick because you’re not the host anymore um wow I I just say look it’s it’s fine last Matt picked the Patriots too last Road game of the year you’re going to come home and you’re going to play a tough San Diego San I still call him San Diego tough Chargers team you know San Diego superchargers of Los Angeles can you build off of this can you take anything I mean that you know we said it all year they won a few games this year and it was always the same story can you take this and build off of it can you improve and they haven’t really been able to do that it’s been a lot of one step forward one step back back can you back up this almost win with another almost win right well that’s and even some of the moral losses you felt like well it was a loss but maybe we should but it’s been too much regression where if this team follows the same path that they’ve been following all year like they’ll come back here against the Chargers and play like crap and not not take anything that they did in this game positively and carry it over and build off of it so look there’s been a lot of T tough home losses this year I think the Patriot fans really want to see what they saw in the first half today can they come out and play that kind of game you know Chargers are in a similar position they’re in the playoffs they’re going to have have to fight they want good positioning so I just I I look at this next game as I don’t know what the last game of the season’s going to matter I don’t know what the bills are going to be playing for at that point maybe it will mean something but for now you look at kind of a weird sort of week with Christmas coming on a Wednesday they’re going to practice on Tuesday they’re going to practice on Thursday they’re going to do walk through Friday and then they’re going to play Saturday so it’s kind of a weird yeah schedule this week how do they adapt to that and you know can they just come here and put up a good effort at home end of the season I think the fans deserve it uh Robin Florida says comes to mind watching the second half was aggressively stupid uh the decisions of punting at Midfield Midway through the fourth running plays that went nowhere late in the fourth with time ticking mapu taking that ball out of the end zone situationally idiotic team from top to bottom I think that’s a bit strong me too it is because like every every team is going to have a few of those situations a game and maybe you know it’s easy to highlight them but you know I just I think they showed some progress today in the first half and and I again I go back to how Drake looked out of the shoot I mean I just that to me was I mean we all know we’ve talked about it plenty of times how this team looked when they went up there in the playoffs and got you know didn’t force a single punt so it’s encourage those parts are encouraging that was as good a half of football as they’ve played all year yeah yeah uh and with a quarterback who’s a rookie I mean and that’s you know it that’s that matters a lot Russ in Westfield joining us here on the Patriots postgame show what’s going on Russ yes gentlemen I’m going to let the hammer drop and I want your opinion on what I think at the this game and I’m just going to tell you some games are won at certain points in some games are lost or could lose it and I’ll just give you one quick example the Falcons in the in the Super Bowl when Julio Jones caught the ball I’m like run the ball up the middle I’m a Patriots fan I’m like you want to win it run the ball up the middle three times kick a field goal add up all the points the time left you won the game y they didn’t today the Patriots lost it and and I think uh the offensive coordinator did a phenomen phal job of calling 30 great plays but that swing pass in the end zone uh at the 10 yard line hit him in the hands it doesn’t matter he gets smacked you seen the play touchdown I’m like could it not be two yards forward then if you drop it it’s incomplete I’m like as soon as that touchdown I go they just lost the game I said that’s it that was the play the last game I know they the punt and all the other thing and I think we got tremendous players on defense I think I see tremendous opt optimism for next year but I think that play when I saw I said they lost it what do you think about that gentlemen well but wow he really didn’t clearly the hammer down clearly the game was lost on that play they they went down 10 in the fourth quarter the game was over like absolutely that was the key play of the game that was that the second or the third turnover in a row it was the third of the three turnovers and that one resulted in a touchdown I mean that’s just look if we’re going to take if we’re going to take Victory laps I said it was lost when the bills marched down the field and scored on their first possession of the second half and tied felt like it was heading that direction didn’t it was like ah now they’re waking up the only thing I don’t know and you know this listen this is I think reasonable Minds can disagree I I think the Patriots played really really well today I don’t know what that means I don’t have tremendous optimism like I don’t I I don’t take much more from it than a really good performance today that’s it like I’m sorry they haven’t really earned me saying well this is who they are but do you take more out of the performance today uh because they’re both losses you take more out of the performance today in terms of any positivity uh or do you take more out of the loss last week against Arizona because there was a lot of negative feelings coming off that by which which do you have more which do you have more feeling not not not positive feeling just feeling overall in terms of dire last week is more indicative of the way they’ve played all year today they played really well yeah I I have a little little anecdote to share I mean like I you know when I when I was playing hockey uh you know I was having a really bad practice and my coach just said you know put me in a one-on-one with a kid uh who actually end up going to play in the NHL and he was on me coaches yelling at me and we had and I had a really good rep and he said you know look DUS this proves to me that you can do it and you just don’t want to and and that was like what but I feel like this proved to me that like Drake May College yeah that Drake may can he can do it he can do it he can go into Buffalo he can throw some dimes he can get the offense going he can you know have the team rallying around him so it’s just really a question of can they give him the pieces around him to round it out so it’s not like oh God Drake please save us you have you know a receiver who’s going to make a play that wasn’t made today where he catches a short pass he breaks a couple tackles he’s a burner and he runs right through everybody and boom Drake may you know just threw a 5 yard pass but it’s a 50- yard touchdown you know same thing that you saw with James Cook I mean you know they have those kind of explosive players put them around Drake give him the pieces but you know what was better what was worse let’s hope that message we saw him do let’s hope that message gets through to the Patriots more than it did to you because you heard that from your coach and you said you know what coach you’re right and you moved out to California you just smoked your marijuana pot dope and went to went to the rest went to Houston’s by yourself on your birthday and he just said screw it I don’t want to well that’s a really good french dip there uh no to be honest with you I was kind of like coach I want to be able to do it all the time can you push the right buttons on me so that I do and I don’t know why I don’t all the time and that was more of the thought but that’s not what he wanted to no but but I mean the general point of it is though that you saw evidence that this kid can do what we need him to do and a very small sample size granted but it at least gives you a hope that maybe you can extrapolate that out of him out of the team build off of it and build the kind of team that at the end of December with the division still in doubt that this kid can go up there into Buffalo into a hostile environment and play a 60-minute game somewhere down the line all right let’s let’s hear from Drake may his postgame press conference right now on the Patriots postgame show here’s the quarterback way you are how tough was that with way you guys maybe played the first half of the the season coming in and then the the turnovers and that sequence in the second half how that cost you how frustrating was that yeah it’s really frustrating um just hurting ourselves the same thing same things repeating and um you know those guys are playing we’re playing hard that’s the biggest thing you know I see those guys are fighting um we’re fighting you know what atmosphere out there was um you know feel like the weather didn’t really affect us feel like we’re running the ball well throwing it well and um got off to a hot start and just came out the second half and just you know put a Defence in a tough spot after they tied it up and then went down there in the Red Zone just got to be better in the Red Zone on me I got to be I got to be better and I got to be better with getting this stuff and be ready for you know Blitz zero and and making plays and at some point down there it’s the reflection of the quarterback I think it’s you know start to come that way down there in the red zone and I got to you know do better and and do more and um make better throws and give our guys chances because you know they’re playing their butts off you say it’s a reflection quarterback they’re kind of challenging you exra yeah for sure yeah I mean just me seeing it um you know they you’re presenting a picture then bringing zero they’re presenting picture then dropping out I think it’s just a challenge on me to hey um we’re force you to make tight throws we’re going to force you to be ready for Blitz zero we’re going to force you to um not be able to run the ball um maybe got make a play not letting me scramble I think I scrambled a little bit too early sometimes tonight um um and then just the the end of the day we’re in that game and that’s a playoff football team we just played with a um MVP candidate and you know we’re in that game and I felt like um we had a chance to come out with that one have two laterals in the game are those designed to be laterals or is that execution off on those pass is not lals but there’s backward pass to Andre yeah we running that play All Season I’m just unfortunate that we didn’t get the end you know that end’s you know big dude and tough tough player to cut so um that’s really uh just a you know tough break and you got to get back and maybe try to make it forward but you know tough tough play on mandre to catch it and get blown up so maybe um either got to throw it um at somebody’s feet or do something different inter yeah I think uh shoot there was a collision definitely had the goal line we had a you know concept and you know you kind of feel like it was going to be the same type throw against the the Colts to hoop and um I let go early you know thinking um he’d break it off and um you just wasn’t on the same page I got to give him you know chance I think he was thinking back pylon so I got to give him a better chance to you know give him a u maybe hold the safety a little bit so um just you know frustrating we’re down there um got a chance to go up and you know make it a you know 217 ball game and uh just a kind of uh you know frustrating kind of Heartbreaker that yeah just taking a shot pressed up man I’m just giving giving our guys a chance to win um on a fade ball and I think you know some other chances tonight throw back shoulders instead of you know throwing up over the shoulder but great play by booty and uh feel like it was a great start to you know the game for you know getting up 70 um then you know what a catch what your impressions of your first quarterb how did that feel yeah I think uh the one on the goal line should cut it up um shoot I thought it was slick out there um couldn’t really feel my feet um but I think the other stuff I think it’s you know chance for us to pick his first downs had a big one at the end there um around the edge and um other than that that I think you know there’s time for it but at the same time I think uh me making plays I think I’ll scramble enough and make some plays with and maybe gerro around those ples being introduced and used those yeah just you know big 65 dude that can you know pick up a yard or um you know beat somebody with some speed I think people underestimate me a little bit so um I think it helps us offensively to to move the change and at this point um you know we need some help in whether some short yardage or some different areas you’re down in the red zone for me to go make a play so want to be team that’s really difficult to play against at the end of the year despite the loss do you take any Solace fact a to play a close game a good team here today yeah I think uh you when you lose it’s tough to kind of you know think about the positives and you know so frustrating um I’m going to hold myself from some anger um it’s just you know at some point turns from disappointment to just kind of kind of you’re you’re getting you’re getting frustrated real frustrated so uh the big thing is uh it’s a tough environment here um it’s a basically a night game basically basically Prime Time game um in Buffalo and you like I said against MVP um candidate and you know good defense and a team that’s going to be in the playoffs um I was proud of the guys and you coach Mayo said that at the end um you know if tonight’s um kind of breakdown he said you know proud of us but at the same time this is not where we want to be and um but think it’s kind of sneak peek hopefully into you know some meaningful games here and um hopefully it’s at our place in the future years but um some meaningful games at the end you know with buffalo in December and hopefully some uh superon two weeks so those linil you know the fact were 14 under coming in 11 11 lot swirling around AVP this week and even gerro how good was it for the team to come out kind of send a message that you got back yeah just trying to uh just trying to block out that noise you know I think it’s you a bunch of you know conversations about our um about our coaching staff and you know stuff like that I think it’s uh you know some BS to be quite honest you know coach Mayo um those guys coach Mayo’s you know we got like I said we got his back and he’s coaches hard he wants to win we all want to win you know we’re all frustrated um AVP has been um you know feel like I feel calling great the past past weeks we’re just plays away and um espeically me turning the ball over um I think it’s just a testament of these guys that keep fighting we keep fighting we’re not going to make the playoffs we we’re out of the race and and these guys are coming in and they’re frustrated when we don’t score and they’re they got energy at practice and they got energy coming in the game and we want to win there’s guys and not even playing that um are yelling on the sidelines and and wanting to win so it’s a I think we’re building something good um building something that that feels right here and um you know I’m proud to be you know proud of be Patriot even over for sure um yeah I like last week just really get in the flow of the game I feel like kind of we got into the flow of the game um tonight and you know I feel like I was seeing it well um I thought those guys would do a good job of you know Finding space and you know beating their man one-onone they challeng just one-on ones and you know I think um you know hopefully people continue to do that because I like our guys one-on-one matchups um I think we it’s a little bit different game up 14-7 that first throw to booty I I threw it in the dirt had a dig across the middle it’s 147 I think I hit that’s Pro possibly a big play and maybe get down there and score another time that’d be huge so um you know they challenged us and I think uh we felt like in a good Rhythm and you know credit those guys are studying the plan we’re getting in you know in in and out of a lot of different calls and different formations and different play calls so you know proud of those guys and you know I feel like we got something to look forward to all right there he goes there goes the quarterback Drake May after the loss in Buffalo today we are wrapping things up here on the Patriots postgame show Paul final thoughts I just hope to make it home P he’s get a Lo I’m going downhill in a in a hurry yeah it really took a turn here I want to get out of this confined
