what’s going on everyone Mike kadlick here Taylor Kyle’s there no John xanis here on this Patriots postgame show Patriots fall to the Miami Dolphins in an ugly one 34- 15 falling to three and n on the 2024 season uh Taylor when we promoted it earlier you basically said that you were just going to sit here and shake your head the entire time uh and it seems to already be starting uh nothing good not a lot of good to come out of this one uh Flags Galore Miami offense just ran through them like a or really passed through them like a hot knife through butter uh some uh some poor turnovers from Drake May uh just just an ugly ugly game all around uh but we’re going to break it all down uh we’re powered by prize picks in game time we’ll talk about them later on uh but Taylor I am obviously still uh in New England in the uh in the Boston area you however are in Miami and we’re down there just now uh in the press conferences in the locker room uh so you saw it all firsthand so first and foremost your quick reaction from this one I want to get but also uh your thoughts of everybody’s comments post game the vibe around the locker room uh and how the team is feeling after again falling to three and nine uh and losing pretty ugly to the Dolphins 34 to 15 yeah I mean the locker room wasn’t great it was a losing locker room uh you know quiet not a whole lot of energy out of them we spoke to Daren low deantre Jacobs Devon godshaw and the common theme was that players owned up they were saying the execution wasn’t good enough and when we asked for um second half adjustments because obviously they did play better in the second half and obviously this coaching staff and the players the entire team is going to be criticized as they should it was at least nice to see them continue to show some great in the second half right if this were I think a team where no one was invested it would have gotten it would continued to be ugly ugly in the second half but that’s really the only positive thing I can say Obviously um the penalties were atrocious and we asked F Daran about that and he was just saying it comes down to execution like nobody it didn’t sound like they were caught off guard right in a game like this where you get stomped in the first half to the point where it’s really not even obviously they were kind of in it but it was kind of like they come back and they fight and it’s a two-score game at one point but they weren’t really in it per se exact it was it was just like the 49ers game where J Peppers gets the pick and you’re like oh maybe they win but they literally have to make zero mistakes and obviously they weren’t able to do that you had to turn overs from Drake May um but yeah it didn’t sound like they weren’t prepared well everyone was like yeah no we this is the team we play all the time we knew what they were going to give us and nothing really caught us off guard it just came down execution and I was trying to ask okay but where’s the disconnect right so the coaching is good and you’re prepared why is the play not really translating and I didn’t honestly get a great answer from anybody it’s just like I mean that’s what it is at the end of the day it’s execution right CH an execution where there’s not a whole lot you can say it’s yeah if you have your Technique like I know Daran low said on the holding penalty he was just playing he was technique and thought he did the right thing and looked at the film and all that stuff but I mean just just tough man that first half was really hard to watch I wish fans could have been in the Press Box to hear the conversations we were basically joking with the dolphins reporters about how bad things were like it was really really ugly so yeah Bob and locker room was not good as you would expect from a game like this um I even Devon gotcha kind of acknowledge how they always say like oh we we have good players you know we’re just not doing enough and even he was like yeah it’s kind of hard for me to keep telling you guys that when we’re losing games and he’s right you know because then we have to come here we have to talk about it because they play poorly I know uh Demarcus Covington’s playing at the beginning of the game like I know what the play the uh play call that really made me upset was the third and eight where they call Zone and the Dolphins very easily converted it’s like you know you cannot play zone against Tua he’s too good he’s great at manipulating Defenders and all that so in an obvious passing situation you should be playing man at every possible opportunity and you know that was just one aspect that I really didn’t like um but yeah just just even if we want to talk about like Alex Van Pelt even you can maybe critique the play calling I know we’re going to get to that yeah we’ll get to that you get penalized it was 10 times for 75 yards like I what are you supposed to do in that situation and yes obviously the coaching needs to be better but the player also just need to execute their assignments Kyle Dugger gave up every touchdown every single one it was miscommunication obviously the last one that was where it’s like okay that’s the ankle injury where he can’t redirect and you’re like all right yeah but that’s where I was like I think you gotta pull him at this point I was just gonna say if it’s to the ankle injury then get him off the damn field exactly but before that it was mental errors he was he even said it’s miscommunication we weren’t on the same page and it’s like bro it’s you it was you every single time maybe I’ll look back and I’ll see something different but it looked like anytime they scored it was Kyle dugger’s not following his man or he’s not passing things off so just embarrassing just an embarrassing effort for them bottom line is what it is and I’m not trying to yeah I’m sorry yeah no you’re good go go finish I’m just saying I don’t want to sit here and like again it was reassuring that they played harder in the second half like Marcus Jones bounced back in a huge way but like the offense still wasn’t very good at we being honest like Drake may have efforts but you never felt like oh the offense has figured it out where the defense you were like okay they made some adjustments I think Devon gotcha mentioned that they didn’t have as many people in the box I think was really the adjustment at halftime um and it was nice to at least see them obviously hold the Dolphins just 10 points and it really did feel like the defense was in control in that second half but you shot yourself in the foot so badly it really didn’t matter I think it was um uh I think it was Trey Jacobs was like we just or vidan was like we just dug ourselves in the deepest of holes and you did um just so yeah terrible effort from them all around again I I like that they at least didn’t quit at the end of the game you saw Drake May Kendrick Bourne called him out for being you know that’s our leader he doesn’t give up he’s still competing hard but man just like it’s it’s hard to find this overlining with this team sometimes because yes they’re young and all these things and I you know I try to give this coaching staff Grace because they’re young but at the same time it’s like the executions out on the field so I don’t really know what you say that’s why I said I was just gonna shake my head so what are you supposed to say it was terrible game it’s tough It’s I think the the embarrassing word you said is is the right one I mean this was just bad football all around on both sides of the ball um we’ll start with the offense um and and I guess before before we do that I know you said we like to sort of be um you know be on on the good side of these things right and give these guys the benefit of the doubt and sort of be you know more reasonable than most frankly um so I think the I’ll just start with the the one upside from this and I don’t think there’s I think there’s only one and it’s kind of what you said but I’ll just reiterate it that they didn’t really quit on offense or defense like they were down 24 to nothing at halftime and didn’t pack it in and then they were down 31 nothing uh heading into the fourth quarter and they still ended up making it a two-score game at one point so like yeah good on them I guess I mean you’re professionals and you get paid to do this you shouldn’t you shouldn’t really give up um but there are teams that would in this spot at three and eight at this point of the Season you know Thanksgiving coming up like bye coming up soon like pack it in F it we’re in Miami get the hell out of here but they didn’t uh so that’s a good thing uh but besides that just just ugly and we can start with the flag I guess a little bit more in depth um and I’m curious your thoughts on this because six of them were pre- snap a lot of them were on low a lot of them were on deantre Jacobs uh deantre Jacobs ends up getting benched for City so towards the end of this game uh J Mayo saying that you know it just he just wasn’t cutting it and they had they had to make a change so um I guess good on May for or Mayo rather for for making the change um but he also he takes the penalties on him he said it starts with me and that’s the right thing for the head coach to do but like how how do you change it and that kind of started to ask that question uh beforehand but it’s like if the coaches are you know according to the players putting these guys in the right position and the players know what to do and they just don’t do it like where does the buck stop where do you you know make this happen and how does it get any better because you know is it harder coaching is it you know not putting up with it in practice is it you know going back to a bichi and thing or even a a you know Gerard Mayo thing early on it’s you take all these penalties and you run the hill x amount of times until these guys get it like you can’t let this [ __ ] happen like there’s so many things that I don’t know if these are happening behind the scenes but clearly something has to change because that was the reason they ended up in this 24 nothing hole was all the penalties early on putting the offense in a bad spot we’ll talk about the play calls but you can’t critique the play calls when you’re in you know second and 20 every other drive it felt like in the first half every time they had a positive play I think at one point I tweeted like Patriots have a positive game without getting flag challenge just constantly every time they felt like they got momentum they shot themselves in the foot and I think it’s also just compound ing like we know this team has a talent issue that’s obvious and I think it’s just compounded by the fact that you keep putting yourselves in these positions and it’s one thing if you’re a team that does have enough Talent where you can overcome all these long yarded situations but they’ve said it like almost every week where no it gets to a point where you can’t just keep putting yourselves in these positions no team can survive constantly going backwards especially on offense and I think that we’re just at the point in the year and I’m sure like it’s not really Newsday but I think you just kind of have to accept like yeah this is not the most talented team and they’re going to stink but you at least want to see discipline right right like the resilience is awesome you get to see that cool but you also want to see them not be the reason that they were hurting themselves I kept saying the defense wasn’t doing anything the Miami Dolphins didn’t do anything we didn’t expect they didn’t catch us off guard we didn’t execute properly and that’s the frustrating part where we’re not behind the scenes we don’t know so the assumption is that the coaching isn’t good enough but the players have pushed back against that and clearly they don’t believe that it’s coaching because they’re playing hard for these guys but it’s just it keeps uh what do you call it it um it’s just compounds the issues compound when again you don’t have the talent and then you’re also not executing properly like you know Vian low and deantre Jacobs I know those guys are in tough positions and they’re fighting their tails off and they’re going up against better opponents pretty much every single week but that doesn’t matter when you are hurting yourself it’s not just the sacks and all those things it’s like you before the play even happens you’re shooting yourselves in the foot so it’s like I hate these I hate I hate these kinds of shows because I feel like I just end up talking in a circle because there’s no like there’s no Panacea there’s no cure all there’s nothing I can say that really fixes it it was poor execution maybe the preparation was okay but regardless you didn’t do it on the field and that’s what matters at the end of the day and that’s why by the by halim basically what we were saying amongst all the media was that this half is about not embarrassing yourself you’re not winning this game most likely you have like a 1% chance of Victory it’s literally just preserving whatever dignity you have left and uh you know on that like when when Mayo said Mayo says before the game with the CBS broadcast where uh he’s basically like you know we need we need to win this game and we can win this game and uh when we started doing some opponent preview stuff earlier in the year we we started to do this thing where we would be like well the Patriots aren’t great but On Any Given Sunday a team can win in the NFL but those teams that are bad and win in the NFL still in upset teams are the ones that are disciplined you can’t be bad and undisciplined you can be really good and get away with being undisciplined sometimes uh because you know Talent trumps that it doesn’t go in reverse where you can’t sit here and not be great and just kind of luck into some plays and still have fall starts and still have passer and things like that like it doesn’t work that way you need to be smart if you’re not going to be good and you’re not going to be I I don’t want to say not going to be tough because they showed some toughness towards the end of this thing but you know the mental errors were just uh were just tough so we do have a couple sound bites here uh let’s start with Gerard mayo and uh and his thoughts just on the L in general look this is the NFL it just wasn’t good enough you know first quarter zero points across the board and then give up 24 points in the second quarter definitely uh is a hard pill to swallow um and then look we saw some fight at the end which is encouraging um but at the same time this game you got every single play every single play counts I thought we gave up too many big plays defensively um did a better job in the Run game they up too many big plays uh tackling game whatever you want to call it just overall execution defensively just wasn’t good enough on offense um they did some good things but anytime you lose the turnover battle it’s always going to be a tough game and then special teams we just got to continue to improve on that did you get a sense this we sorry last thing for me like the last thing I told the guys it’s all about us um and this is before the game I said it’s about us it’s not about anybody else it’s about us and to make a commitment to one another and that’s what the game really came down to it’s us going out there you know kicking ourselves in the butt or stomping our toe against the wall because of penalties we we don’t have a team I don’t think any team wants to go backwards at any CA in any cause uh but we did that today so that that’s that’s Mayo there and you know kind of saying it saying it for all of them and saying it’s it’s not that he’s not going to use coach Peak but it’s you know it starts with him and they just need to get better um and his comment on the turnover battle can kind of shift us into to um you know the the Drake May conversation here uh because May goes uh 22 of 37 for 221 yards has the the touchdown pass the the herculan effort like you said to uh Austin Hooper down the middle uh but he also has the interception and uh and obviously has the strip sack uh that sort of turned the game on its head earlier on in the game um there was some more miscommunication from him and pob Douglas which I thought was was sort of uh you know telling is not the right word because they’re both young players and you know eventually it’ll get on the same page but you know it happens at one point and then it happens again the next week uh you wonder whose fault it is now may ends up taking the blame says that he um he should have put it on him and he was opening it was a bad throw so this week there’s not much question as to who’s going to take the blame postgame it you know may sort of wore that one fully on his shoulders um but the turnovers to me Taylor are are the issue and you know we talk about May being a player who uh is a gunslinger and is GNA try you know he can make every throw so he’s going to try and make every throw uh and sometimes um you know he he just doesn’t obviously the interception uh I I know you said uh we were talking about earlier great play by the defensive uh the defensive player which obviously it was he he pretends to rush he gets off the block he makes a one-handed snag still putting the ball In Harm’s Way I don’t like uh but the the real issue for me is the strip sack it’s happened too many times with Drake May where you know he drops back yes viian low got smoked off the line yes pressure’s coming in his face but when pressure is coming in your face so much like that pause hold on to the football with with two hands Drake May uh and get down and don’t put the ball in more Harm’s Way than it has to be where yes he’s trying to do too much in that moment he’s trying to make a play where you know he grabs he takes one hand off the football tries to swad the guy down then he has the ball in his other hand like a loaf of bread it gets strip sack and it makes a bad play even worse um so that’s May uh we’ll hear from May right now uh before we get your thoughts on May’s performance in general uh cu spoke obviously after the game as well tough you know anytime you’re losing um I think just you know like I’ve always said I hate losing more than you I really like to win so losing sucks and um I think you know just you know I told some guys just remember this feeling you know remember this feeling of you really get our butts whooped today and I think you know it’s only up from here and we got a bright you know a lot of bright bright future and and bright players in there that Mak some plays for the Patriots you think the game could have been different if you get a touchdown in that first it’s the second possession but in that first sustained drive like do you ever think back to that when I think it’s a whole different game if we score there um I think so maybe I think it’s you know easy to say it’s um you whole new ball game you know go and score 14-7 make it 14-7 you know that’s a lot you know better than um you know punting it away and making it you know 21 Z so what doubt yeah so I mean he he he shoulders the blame and he’s going to do it and I think I obviously that’s the that’s the good part about about Drake May here of the many is that he’s not uh he’s not a finger point turn he’s going to sit there and he he mentioned it earlier he hates hates losing more than he likes winning um and so that that’s kind of the play you’re going to get from him um but overall Taylor your thoughts on Drake May’s performance uh the interception I know we had some different thoughts on it so I’ll let you kind of go off on that but what did you what did you think of the quarterback in the loss today obviously you had the exciting plays right like you had the Austin Hooper completion he made some really great throws and like long term I’m still not going to get too Open Arms about uh turnovers necessarily like the interception it took a pass rusher coming off of his rush and making a one-handed catch that was one of the coolest plays I’ve ever seen like period that would and Gibson’s open like if you pause it when he throws the ball I don’t think you would have any issue with it right like you’re not he tries to drop it over the line you don’t see that guy dropping back and it’s just a great athletic play for sure exactly like that would not really but the strip sack I have an issue with because I keep mentioning it like with some of the turnovers a lot of the interceptions are different types of interceptions right like the one today is one actually actually I think the interception today was one of the few times where I’m like yeah I really don’t blame him at all for that one other times I’ve been like ah it’s inaccurate um you know he’s trying to do too much all those things but the strip sa acts like have to stop and it’s hard I understand so many times it’s like pressure from The Blind Side where he doesn’t even know anybody’s coming at him and he gets hit like Zack celer beat Vian low immediately I don’t really know he didn’t want to say the shoulder issue was a a concern and something he’s been dealing with for a while I think that he was just kind of being a football player and didn’t want to make excuses I think that was part of it but that fumble he even said himself it’s like I can’t try to swim over a Defender like yeah you got to put two hands on the ball consistently and that’s the one where I’m like yeah man you can’t keep getting strip sacked I understand you’re under pressure and all the times he maybe could and doesn’t like I get that I understand and I don’t think it’s going to be a long-term issue for him but it’s got to get nipped in the butt at some point like that’s the fourth time he’s been strip sacked in seven games now I think seven games or whatever it’s completely unacceptable it needs to stop he needs to be better in that regard because obviously this was a blowout like I’m not going to say that one turnover made the difference but still maybe you’re able to sustain the drive or you know what have you so was it a third down sack was second down right I think it was second down but in that in on that topic too like if you’re going to be the type of player that you know we will sit and excuse the interceptions when it’s like okay that’s the kind of player you are where you’re going to throw a lot of touchdowns you might throw a couple interceptions here and there you at least have to not fumble the football too you have to have that aspect of the turnover battle locked down I’m not going to sit here and fumble put the balls harm put the ball in harms the way this way if you’re going to allow me and give me the grace to try and fit one in Windows and try and make one play when I’m doing too much oh that’s okay that’s just Drake May being Drake may like you got to hold on to the football in times when you have to in this regard I would say yeah so again long term I’m not super concerned but it needs to get fixed and if it doesn’t that’s where like if this happens even one more time I think that’s where I’m like okay that’s that is even kind oftr as well but it’s a problem let’s get Taylor to be let’s see extreme Tay on this show what was it extreme Tay I mean no I mean the thing is so many times where he was the only reason they were even in the game at all offensively so you know you kind of balance that with yes he’s turning the ball over and it’s happened every week and one thing we mentioned I think when I was on Pat beat was that he’s had either a turnover worthy play or a turnover two in every game that he started and played the entire game that’s not sustainable I don’t care how many great plays you’re making like you can’t do that and beat especially good teams so the turnovers are disappointing but at the same time you have to acknowledge like Drake May is still a dude like he’s Kendrick borne said it I think the entire team understands that he’s such a talented player and he gives them a bright future but at some point you need to stop being an air repeater I don’t think he’s an air repeater in most areas but the strip sack thing is a repeat problem that needs to be fixed 100% um you mentioned Drake May is the Patriot’s best player and I think he is too uh at least at least on Drake May their best off player so let’s get into something that we actually don’t agree with at all here Taylor Maybe not at all because I’m sure that you know you’ll be able to convince me and I’ll be able to you know make you think about it but it’s this damn double pass on Third and 17 you take the pl you take the football out of your best players’s hands and you give it to Kendrick Bourne on the double pass attempt um I’ll go first and then I’ll let you you know rebuttle because I understand where you’re coming from but look it’s third and 17 you’re down what what were they down 31 at this point was it 31 to nothing 24 to nothing maybe and they’re in this position where they can’t get anything going on these other third down attempts they’re running screens they’re running draws they’re not even bothering trying to put the ball In Harm’s Way and I get that you kind of want to you know just live to see another day live to see another down and then they pull out this double pass to Kendrick Bourne where first of all it was a bad throw was a bad decision he even mentioned after the game that he didn’t see raand Dre just kind of threw it back over there where I’m like if that if you’re going to see lock room when he was at the podium that’s rough yeah yeah he was like I couldn’t he was like I couldn’t really see him but I probably could have put it a little higher a little better so I’m like if you can’t even see the guy like I get it you guys are trying to make something out of nothing so you’re just G to kind of Chuck it over there but he also was like I could have just run Ran So I need to make a better decision on the play call itself save that like save the double pass you don’t need the double pass in this game you don’t need to run this down 24 to nothing like I just I didn’t like that at all I thought that was a WTF moment for for vanel where it’s like there are going to be other opportunities in you know maybe later games this season maybe next season where you’re actually in playoff contention where you need to kind of you know throw a real spark into a football game and need a double pass to just throw it here because it’s like well nothing’s happening we might as well just pull out the trickery it felt it felt very very desperate to me and I just I did not like the decision yeah they were desperate it was third and 17 like what you yeah it was desperate and they still wanted to win the game we’re literally sitting here talking about the fact they actually got themselves in a position where it was still a ball game like they the Dolphins pulled twoa thinking that they already had in the bag and the fumble happens and the Patriots are back in it so I disagree with that I think it’s a little I think it’s a little too nitpicky like the other third and extra long situations was like a run and then a regular screen right right I don’t really and also the offensive line couldn’t hold up like what else were they supposed to do literally you either completely give up and you just wave the white flag and say all right we’re going to punt or you try to make something happen because you are down by a huge margin and you need some way to get points so yeah I don’t I don’t think it was too it was a bad throw like this it was it was a bad execution as well this is another one of those examples and how often do we talk about like everyone’s wants to immediately go to the coaching I understand that I’m not even really pushing back against it but you compound it by not executing properly and this again this is not an instance where I have an issue with play call I really don’t but you don’t even get the ball to your receiver like yeah this is one where I’m saying you know what I get the play call it made because I was thinking third 1 I was like okay I literally said to Sophie Weller who sitting next to me I was like all right there’s going to be a run or a screen I end up being right 50% trickery and also it was blocked well like at least from when I saw it live I was like oh he’s actually got some room this might work and then obviously it blocked the throw convert that into genius play also the Vikings did that literally like three weeks ago when the when the Patriots were in Tennessee the dolphins that night on a third and extra long ran the same double pass that’s Kevin okono and everyone’s gonna oh Vikings are so smart yeah it’s great when it works if it doesn’t you’re an idiot so yeah there were a lot of issues with coaching in this game that I do not think was one of them well that I agree with is that obviously if it worked we’d all be singing their praises saying oh they finally got something going but I just I I I don’t I don’t know I guess to me I don’t like throwing a a trick play against the wall when you’re and I I guess it’s the white flag thing and it you know that’s not the best way to look at it but it’s like you’re not in the I guess they were we’re talking about the preseason like it’s not like they bust out a trick play in the preseason this is a competitive game this is the NFL like and if if that one double pass is going to keep you from calling whatever like a trick play later in the year then you have other issues right like double passes are not things that people never seen before I’m sure if we look at the design it’s gonna be something we’ve seen across the league so I really I I I again there were issues with the coaching I think that’s a bit of a nitpick because it didn’t work and it looked stupid so on Van pelt’s play calling however the one play I or not the one play there were other you know some of it was okay but I really really did like the two-point conversion to make it a two-score game the the hooking ladder from booty to rre Great play great execution um I like that they had a two-point play drawn up where it wasn’t just you know a regular one of their Arsenal right a regular play in their Arsenal where he just draws back and there’s you know a hitches or you know whatever you want to call it it was this is a two-point design play something that you know when they didn’t go for it in that Jaguars game or you know whatever the case may be what’s what’s the phase my God there’s this one person in the chat who just the most miserable person in the world my God please leave oh my God please leave um oh God I’m controlling other things so I’m not watching the chat right now but yeah I really liked the two-o conversion play you know it’s it’s a a do or die if they don’t get it it’s still a three-score game and it was a really nicely executed play and I thought that you know that showed some promise I would say in the Alex manfeld offense yeah and I think we’re seeing that like he even mentioned that the trickery and all that stuff is kind of start like there there’s things they practice I don’t always call um I think you are starting to see especially because we talked about it when we had the bet in the Bengals game I thought they were going to have a couple plays because you saw a ton of trick plays from the Browns um now I think you’re starting to see it maybe I don’t know if it’s necessarily maybe trust he trusts his offense more and really to execute whatever um but yeah and this is a game where like I don’t really think you can really it’s hard to evaluate Alex Van Pelt it’s like what we talked about when they couldn’t run the ball right and it’s just like yeah when the Playbook shrinks there’s really not a whole lot you can do as a play caller because the other team knows exactly what you need you’re passing it every single time um I wish they had been on schedule more so we could have seen you know the bread of this game plan instead of whatever it turned out to be because they were blown out and there wasn’t a whole lot they could do uh but yeah I think there are times where you start to see you know little little specs of Alex Andel like oh you know things are building on each other and all those things but you know when you’re getting penalized that often and you are in so many second and long third and long situation first and long situations Playbook kind this there was a there was a quote from Michael Lombardi the year that uh um Matt Patricia was calling the offense here and he was basically like Patricia’s not calling plays like in a sequence he’s just grabbing plays from the Playbook and kind of calling them and there’s no Rhyme or Reason to what’s coming next and why you’re dialing things up when it looks like this when you’re always in second and 20 or you’re always behind schedule that’s kind of what it turns into is okay let’s see if this works let’s see if this works where there’s no there’s no rhythm there’s no playscript because you know nothing worked the first time so you can’t call anything off of something else and so that’s not and that’s not on velt because they’re putting them like they said the players are are admitting it to themselves they’re putting themselves in these bad positions they’re false starting they’re doing this they’re doing that and then you set yourself up with you know way too much to go third and 17 and and you have to call a double pass or you have to call a screen or do this that and the other thing and so just just not good all around from the offense the last thing I want to hit on uh before I kick it to you if you have any final offensive thoughts is just the protection because you know Jacobs gets benched uh May is hit six times he’s sacked four times uh so just a you we we’ve talked about the offensive line a lot where we thought it was really bad and then it sort of started to get back together and they finally they start five the the same five off offensive lineman this week for the third time in three weeks straight it’s like oh we actually have a little bit of a rhythm here we talked in Fox bar on that that Thursday that rainy day when we were talking about the NFL draft uh the NFL draft Outlook and I said that they should go get TCH because at least there’s a semblance of reason on the offensive line to think that they could kind of maybe Kick the Can a little bit and use love and and now it’s just it was back to you know horror again so uh I I guess my question to you is what did you think was worse uh was it the protection or was it the pre- snap penalties uh that was worse from the offensive line today both bad can I say that I thought they were both pretty terrible you’re as an offensive lineman you’re hurting yourself before the play and you’re hurting yourself after the play and you know I I like vidan low as a player especially because of the growth that he shown and obviously no one thought he was anything nearly a starting caliber player and he’s shown that he can at least maybe be like a quality spot starter type and that’s really why I’ve kind of had him I think that he’s really punching above his weight like every single week but now you get to a point where it’s like okay you said you were prepared you getting penalized this is the second week in a row where you’re getting flagged and it’s just like I I think they need to draft the player I but at the same time it’s games like this where I’m like hey if you just think you want an upgrade I know he’s under contract if you want to sign a veteran I’m cool with it because at some point like I really think this game encompassed Talent deficit right like yes it’s already hard enough when you hurt yourself again with the pre- snap penalties which I think were their own completely different issue and that was obviously terrible but then when like you’re getting beaten by a defensive tackle and the line games have been an issue for this offense consistently so I think they’re both terrible you know there’s no really you know my God I I it’s just bad they’re getting to him guys the Patriots are getting to Taylor he’s upset they’re literally breaking my brain well do you have any uh I guess we can move from the offense to the defense then uh if you don’t have any other comments on the rest of the offensive performance today yeah no not really like Drake May showed you the flashes but he’s got to protect the football more consistently um and then the offensive line just terrible terrible terrible that’s really what it comes down to yeah some a couple Inc uh an increased snap count for Jayvon Baker but he does nothing jayen pulk obviously really does nothing as well not getting anything from the wide receivers but this isn’t a wide receiver game this is an offensive line game like there was no uh they had no ability to really get anything done because there was no protection there was no time anything was just a far cry a cry for help there was one schemed up screen past to Jay and pul that you know they didn’t get the first down I don’t know if I would put it on P you obviously have to look at the film and how it was blocked up but this isn’t the time for me to to sit and harp on Baker and uh and Jaylen po because the offensive line was just so pitiful and couldn’t get anything done for the Patriots so we’re going to flip it over to the defense we’re going to flip it over uh to some special team stuff before we get out of here but first let’s hear from our friends both at prize picks and Game Time first and foremost we’re game time good answer uh it’s game time it’s also time to talk about this Patriots defense which uh the offense was bad the defense wasn’t great too Tua absolutely shredded to them 29 of 40 3177 yards and four touchdowns no interceptions uh my big takeaway uh honestly watching this game was uh obviously the Patriots weren’t great but my thing with this offense and I I’ve sort of been a two a hater um and a lot of it has to do with I was telling you this week one of my buddies is a is a dolphins fan and he is just all over to us so we give him crab it all day you know he’s not that good he’s a product of the system no this man is the system when they got rid of him or when he got hurt rather earlier this season and Mike bdaniel had to go to Snoop Huntley and all those other Skyler Thompson the offense wasn’t the same Tua just has it down Tu a t he’s so smart the anticipation the timing he’s throwing passes while the the Patriots defensive B are still confused and have no idea where to go he’s putting things behind guys heads Wadd right in stride Hill right in stride jonu Smith has turned into like a really really good tight end all of a sudden under uh Tua joh who had four nine catches for 87 yards and a touchdown today uh they were a mess they messed them up aan had a couple receiving touchdowns as well um two a bald out they confused the crap out of this defense uh so talk to me what did you see or what did you not see from this Patriots defense because again they they let up 24 in the second quarter they end up scoring 34 for the game uh no good at all from Demarcus coving defense I’m so happy for John new Smith he seemed like an awesome guy and I’m happy for his success but I swear every time I see a big play people hype him up it’s a blown coverage every time he had the touchdown two weeks ago completely blown coverage same thing this week so again I’m happy for him and that’s awesome that he’s doing well but it confuses the hell out of me when people say oh he’s like the best tight Ed in the AFC blown coverages anyway good for Johnny I’m happy for you sincerely I just I do not understand like the fascination and thinking that like he’s this great you know Talent he’s a product of Tu in that system yeah but again so to that point the miscommunications especially in the Red Zone killed the Patriots and I’m pretty sure that every touchdown they scored was because of Kyle Dugger he acknowledged it he needs to be better and I know you know he had the ankle injury of course and like I mentioned earlier you saw it on the last touchdown they gave up that was when was like yeah the change of direction is not there I get it but the mental errors that’s the part where I’m just like dude this isn’t even like you’re not a rookie or anything I understand you weren’t on the field and that you know that plays a part in it but it looked like there were three blown coverag that were specifically him there was the first one where Jaylen Hawkins is trying to it looked like he was trying to uh uh change coverage assignments and give it to Dugger Dugger didn’t go with him on the motion that was the biggest thing for me like I know everybody was kind of crapping on Marcus Jones and honestly I I need to look back and see but I feel like ver he just like he’s not big like sometimes yeah he’s gonna give things up because he’s 5 foot eight and that is what it is thought I love battled back and made a couple nice plays in the second half too which was huge it like Jonathan Jones honestly where the first a lot of the game you’re getting smoked but then whole second half you saw Marcus Jones played way better so I was happy to see that from him but the no the pass rush was also interesting because obviously Tua gets the ball out so fast I’m not sure how many opportunities they really had to actually attack the passer but even still it was very obvious especially in the first half they were not getting any heat on Tua and he was dicing them up now it’s hard when you got Tua who’s like he can make no passes he throws to spots where you’re literally in coverage and you’re looking at your receiver and the ball is already out of his hand I understand the margin for air is very slim there most disappointing thing for me was absolutely the Red Zone execution and again I think a lot of that comes down to Kyle Dugger not passing things off not reacting to motion where the touchdowns were just entirely too easy he owned up to I know at least the first touchdown for Johnny Smith where he said yeah that was on me but unless something’s different on the film it looked like they were all on you so I know we can critique and go back and forth in all this but really they were driving the ball down the field period so the fact that the red zone defense struggled because of Kyle Dugger like yes that’s bad they’re still moving the ball um but I’m going to be really fascinated to look back at the tape and see how many chances they actually really had to rush the passer because this is the second week in a row I haven’t yodis yanuk and G no no idea where he was Christian bore obviously got his sack was more of a cleanup pressure and all that you understand it’s going to take a minute for him but Yanik is not in that same category it’s like you’re a veteran everybody said you’re bringing the juice and I haven’t seen anything from him again I’ll be fascinated to go back and watch it but really really disappointing effort specifically from Kyle Dugger that really is like the neon sign for me I have a hard time really critiquing anybody else because obviously like you know every game if they’re playing Zone coverage and that’s where I didn’t really love the plan for Demarcus in the first half I felt like they were playing too much Zone I also understand on early Downs you can’t just only play man because like with McVey McDaniel is a very good play caller very good schemer and the the things they were getting beat on a lot of the touchdowns were in main coverage where they weren’t passing things off properly um yeah so I would say coaching I was disappointed in in the first half but then just the red zone defense horrendous Kyle Dugger needs to be better for them you mentioned the coaching in the first half we got a couple bites he Mayo talking about the coaching uh saying that you know once they goes you know what I won’t explain it I’ll let Mayo talk to us players I mean look it’s it’s all once those guys cross the white lines there’s nothing I can do for them there’s nothing any coach can do for them once they cross the white line it’s my job to continue to prepare not only them but our coaches to go out here and play better football and we’ll go to uh Marcus Jones as well Taylor asked him about the coach is putting these guys in position to succeed here I asked this are you sure I thought I didn’t ask hard questions are you sure was me oh Taylor Kyle’s asking asking the hard questions holding their feet to the fire what do we got let’s hear it comes to discipline most people going hear that soon as the coaching all those things do you feel like still dr’s put you guys in these positions to be more successful and you know where’s the disconnect um he always put us in the right spot of being successful um when it comes down to it at the end of the day mayo is not out there playing for us so it comes down to uh doing what we have to do and doing what we need to do and it’s tough man in those situations where I understand why everyone’s mad at Mayo when the coaches I totally get it because if you’re not doing well on the field at some point yes the coaches are responsible because they need them one prepare you but also whatever has to happen behind the scenes where they need to be more disciplined Vian low said you know the penalties it comes down to discipline wasn’t anything surprising we just have to do it so I completely understand people being upset with the coaches but at the end of the day it’s what they said the players have to execute they’re not surprised by anything nothing’s new like we always talk about last year where it’s like oh Bill he has all the Tendencies and all the things and he tells the team all the checkpoints that they need to win the game this is the second week in a row where we’ve heard from players like yeah we knew how to win the game we just didn’t do it so honestly I’ll maybe dig more when we get in the locker room and try to get a better idea but I asked several players like I’m trying to understand too and I want to answer the fans questions like that’s my job I am a vessel for fans and fans want to know what the hell is gerro Mayo doing what is this coaching staff doing why are these guys not prepared and I think at the end of the day like we said earlier there is a talent deficiency on this team you got a lot of young players like Vian low is only in his third season he’s obviously the full-time starter to monre Jacob’s the same thing where you really ideally wouldn’t want those guys to be starters but at the end of the day there’s also the fact that it’s the mental errors where I’m just thinking okay honestly it was a comment in the comment in the chat great point if you’re coaching it and it’s happening and you’re not coaching against it you’re allowing it to happen and that is very fair and again that’s why I understand the frustration with the coaches I’m trying to figure out how my best perspective of what Gerard’s doing behind the scenes and it sounds like the players are like it’s not gerro it’s us right and I don’t know how you get better and even Bill bich had years where the roster just didn’t play well enough and like 2009 in the documentary um when he the uh not do your job it was a football L yes Brady on the sideline he’s saying I I can’t get these guys to play the way I need them to play and then the next off season obviously they had the great draft and you know everything kind of changes and that’s when you started to see the early signs of that second Dynasty I it the fire Mayo stuff is stupid like it’s just objectively stupid I going to be very interested to see if they can get a good free agent class and maybe hopefully the rookies this year figure it out next year and they’re actually consistent contributors um but yeah it’s frustrating and I understand fans frustrations and I don’t want to you know I don’t want to be condescending or anything like that but the players need to do it on the field and I just don’t know where you get better outside if you know what the roster just has a lot of holes and you need to get better I first and foremost D we appreciate uh the Super Chat uh the the the donation here uh it goes to us and we appreciate that of course um I wonder about the comment because does dear Demarcus Covington have to go they made no adjustments like you know in my opinion they they let up 24 points in the second quarter and then they only let up 10 points the rest of the way and made it a two-score game so I feel like they did adjust a little bit and they sort of they were able to contain and handle the Dolphins offense a little bit more it just was too little too late and they didn’t go in with the proper game plan uh but I’m I’m curious on your thoughts on on cing uh Covington’s role in this game in this loss and how they did adjust on the way because again Tua was lights out on those first three drives 21 nothing that to start this game yeah I interviewed uh Andre weard he was a former NFL pro Scout um Matt and R’s adjuster I’m not gonna hold that against him he’s a good friend um but he was saying that one thing he’s been impressed with is Demarcus Covington’s adjustments and honestly I know everybody says he doesn’t adjust but I’m like okay one I’m having a hard time seeing what the adjustments are in the second half and because it’s a live broadcast it’s very to see live I just respectfully D where is this coming from like literally Devon Goa told us there was an adjustment made at halftime but everyone’s like oh no he doesn’t do anything that’s just like not true and you see it like if you look at the tape he does make adjustments whether it’s a Personnel thing week to week where we’ve seen them cut two players who played poorly for them we’ve seen Keon white acknowledge that he was used inside a lot and now was more on the edge and they’re like kind of Base packages and is playing better for them um although he was quiet today again I’m going to look back at the film and see why it did seem like he had a great day as a passer necessarily um but this is one of those things I I don’t want to get too far in depth and put my foot in my mouth because I need to was the tape of course clearly you saw it the second half it was a completely different defense if they played like that for 60 minutes this is a very different conversation but they didn’t and at some point yes coaching is responsible players need to execute and that part of that is on the coaches but it’s just it is so frustrating I think players are frustrated fans are frustrated everybody’s frustrated because there’s no consistency we know this team needs to find ways to lose but they also or they need to find ways to win but they also need to ways to not lose not hurt themselves and that’s the biggest thing I saw in this game it’s awesome that they showed resilience and I think again that is a testament we can critique the coaches all we want and they do deserve to be critiqued they did play better in the second half right so there’s something to be said there but we need to see a 60-minute game and we haven’t seen that yet this season yep um we got another one in here uh and it’s draft talk I know we’re on a postgame show May prods 199 couldn’t beat out D $2 but that’s okay we appreciate it either way uh thoughts on will Johnson quarterback of Michigan I know you have haven’t done too much of a deep dive to but let’s kind of transition that into need for a cornerback outside of Christian Gonzalez and where that is on the totem poll of this offseason because sha Jones Marcus Jones improved today but know he wasn’t great early on last week Jonathan Jones was a liability at times and coverage uh they need someone outside of Christian Gonzalez but where in your opinion does that line up on the totem poll of needs um yeah just I I appreciate the questions I do but I am spending a lot of time just trying to understand the Patriots so I don’t have a lot of time to study college players unfortunately um but I think we we’ve talked about this where I think the priorities for the draft are obviously affected by free agency like if you plug those holes in free agency if you get a tackle if you get a receiver then obviously yeah maybe you have a position where you can get a lock down corner but I don’t think this was a corner game I understand Marcus Jones gave up the catches and everything I get that he’s gonna be a starter next season hopefully just more of than the slot where he has better matchups and he can go against guys where he doesn’t have a massive size disadvantage um but yeah I this was more of a safety game like I mentioned Kyle Dugger was the one guy who constantly stood out as a glaring red flag Marcus Jones was still he’s competitive like when he gives up catches I remember when I went back and watched the Garrett Wilson matchup where it seemed he did get smoked but it’s also like yeah but there’s great throws and great catches like at some point he’s small and you got to live with that because at least he’s gonna be competitive versus like a Marco Wilson where it’s not even competitive and the guy is like just getting toasted and he’s not even in the area um but yeah if the if they are able to get pass rusher left tackle and wide receiver those are my top three needs for this team yes will Johnson I think is on the table but it’s just way way too early to be talking about that but they do need a CB2 I do think you need another boundary corner to set you up for long term because Jonathan Jones feels like he’s kind of transitioning safety if his career continues he kind of figure he’s probably gonna continue in that role and then your CB2 you’re talking like Marcus Jones and Christian Gonzalez you have no idea who that third guy is I don’t even know if Alex Austin played today so absolutely is a need I hope they can get a guy like will Johnson because they solve a lot of their issues um earlier in the off season but you know we we just don’t know yet uh couple leftovers here on the defense uh they did stop the run 2.7 yards per carry uh pretty solid on that front there now granted it doesn’t matter when th Tua throws like run stuff next play explosive pass exactly so like yeah good good for you I guess but you mentioned Gonzo in CB1 did have a nice fumble return 63 yards for a touchdown the every turnover in his career is against the Dolphins that’s crazy yep oh yeah that’s right he had one earlier this year too I believe right yeah both his interceptions uh oh I guess not two but yeah against yeah Snoop uh earlier in the season and he was questionable coming into this game I don’t know if you saw Reese’s video this morning he looked like he had a pretty serious limp on that hip coming in uh he worked out with with donon mayo and the guys early on he ends up playing um okay in coverage I didn’t notice any anything glaring from him I thought it was more so the other guy’s Dugger and uh he looked pretty quick on the on the fumble return touchdown so uh we mentioned Drake May is their best offensive player uh Chris Gonzalez is clearly this team’s best defensive player yes sir yes sir um all right let’s see uh any leftovers on defense before we finish this up with just a couple special teams not I think we pretty much hit it all but yeah I think we did I’m just gonna look at the team stats real quick see if there’s anything I maybe missed like the Box we talked a little bit about pressure uh they only had two sacks only two quarterback hits um it’s tough when two it gets the ball out at lightning speed butus Jones had three breakups today okay yeah three gani had one Dugger I mean I’m talk about Dugger stat surprised I didn’t expect that yeah um all right well that’s the defense uh special teams notes um not too much to glean I would say other than uh a tough Miss from from Joey Sly early on that uh on that field goal where you know they they try and get out I think they was z z at that point they going to get out to an early check I think but either way it wasn’t that it wasn’t 21 nothing it wasn’t a four-core game at that point they could have they could have taken a lead or at least dug into Miami’s short lead uh and he just misses one and and Jayvon Baker we talked about or we talked with Jeremy Springer uh on Friday afternoon about his role as a kick return and why he wasn’t in the game last week towards the end there was an issue with uh the wind and the weather and he wasn’t fiing it right so they wanted to sit him down uh today in Miami he sits down the whole time they only put Antonio Gibson and jichael Hy back there so uh your thoughts on the Special Teams uh blunders or or lack thereof Horan out here yeah it was just disappointing for Joey slay obviously last week it came down to block deont Jacobs didn’t handle his assignment and the guy got through and that was blocked this was just a flat out Miss that was very disappointing you expect more from a guy like Joey Sly and there were turn thing was also definitely weird because Jeremy Springer sounded like they were gonna put Javon Baker back in and they didn’t want to quit on him um but he wasn’t back there very there was so much that happened in this game obviously it didn’t really come up in the press conference because that was yeah right I feel like that would have been a little toned deaf to ask about jvon Baker in a game like this um but yeah I definitely that was an odd that was an odd uh you know an odd choice considering what the comments were leading up to this game and the reasoning behind it yeah was interesting um and then the slly thing it’s funny how last week he um you know he’s short in in pregame so they don’t go with him uh with on the the question mark where they decided to go for punt I forget what the situation was now there’s been so much uh going on last week but then today according to reports I think Chris Mason had it he was Nails in pregame 63 64 yeah dude he was killing it in Pre so bizarre he was L great there were kicks that looked like they would have been for 70 yeah and then he just Shanks the the easy one today so uh I think Hill bounce he’s somebody who has been good all season for them so um not not too worried about that but obviously just another wound uh in a in a in a massacre of a game today um we got one more Super Chat here and this can kind of be our outro because great question three and nine Seasons all but lost you know they’re not going to make the playoffs at this point they’re not you know really primed for a run here um so what now I guess Taylor do you want to see from the team moving forward what has to what has to go what has to give what has to change um for I guess hope really going into into next season because again they sit here one more game until the bu then they have two bills games a Chargers game Arizona’s at the top of the NFC West right now it’s not getting any easier for them uh but they do also have a chance here to kind of flip the page turn things around and and try and make this reasonable and more exciting for 2025 consistency I want to see some consistency because it feels like every week it’s something it’s like all this is better but then this thing just completely bottomed out offensively I would like to see them not go backwards I like literally my bare minimum is I understand this is not a good offense but you putting yourself in bad positions with unforced errors that can’t happen at all so offense stop with the penalties is my absolute number one defensively I want to see more consistent communication there have been so many breakdowns and coverage this season and sometimes I understand where like it’s Marcus Jones and it’s like yeah he’s a first year starter obviously like missed a most of the season last year I can kind of understand but it just feels like these breakdowns are happening on way too consistent of a basis um so those are my big things I want to see better communication and chemistry from the secondary and offensively stop going backwards unnecessarily or going backwards period you know I wouldn’t be mad if you just eliminated the negative plays yeah offensively to me it’s it’s it’s the penalties it’s the um it’s the mental errors plain and simple like I look I can take a spotty offensive line in a rebuild season and Drake May getting sacked and having to kind of run around like a chicken with his head cut off and trying to make something out of nothing right like that’s that that’s going to happen we we started the show with it and it’s I think it’s a good way to end the show with it where if you’re not going to be that good and you’re not going to be that talented you at least have to have discipline where like anybody can be disciplined like that’s you know no not everybody is runs a 4240 not everyone has the massive catch radius not everybody can throw the ball like Drake may not everybody can run you know like a um a Tyreek kill or whatever right but one thing you can can do is be mentally sound and mentally sharp and whether it’s the players whether it’s the coaches um I don’t really care who the blame is on they just need to be there and they need to be um you know on it and ready because that’s how they are going to upset the bills if they want to that’s how they’re going to um you know win one of these games maybe down the stretch it’s not going to be being the more talented team it’s being the more disciplined team on a given Sunday and that’s what they need uh defensively same thing discipline um getting healthier obviously and it’s just uh they’re not in a great spot defensively but it’s it’s a team that was really good last year so to see the decline kind of stinks but I think it’s just Improvement in all areas um getting another season and a couple more games under Covington’s belt is going to help um young coaching staff it’s not excuses because it is unacceptable the whole thing was unacceptable like we mentioned today was embarrassing 3415 uh a 31 nothing whole not good enough they they scratch and Claw and give themselves like this much of a chance and then Drake May throws the interception so again it’s not great but uh and not really much to take away positively but there are um opportunities down the stretch for them to get better uh and hopefully they can take advantage of it um so I think that’s going to do it here Patriots postgame show Patriots lose 3415 Taylor any final thoughts before we get out of here um on on this game and what’s going on uh down the stretch here this big week this has to be one of those turnaround weeks like this needs to be a massive wake up call the same way when he called the team soft and they rebounded like this needs to be one of those weeks where you say you look yourself in the mirror you burn the tape from this game or at least in the first half and you got to build on it you got to be more consistent that really is just the bottom line burn the tape be better answer the call right the Colts this is a very winnable game Jonathan Taylor is not playing great Anthony Richardson is a very streaky player Colts have a solid defense but you know this is one of your few truly winnable games you have left you absolutely have to capitalize and try to regain some level momentum you do and I think it’s huge you like you mentioned because it’s also the week before the buy right and so this could be a a let down spot for them where we’re three and nine we’re not playing for anything we just got to get ourselves through this game and then we have a you know fif a 14 day stretch or whatever it is until our next game where you can’t Overlook that you have to go into this and think no we want to go into the buy having just come off a win and gain a momentum this way some teams can go the opposite I’ve seen the Patriots go the opposite in years past they can’t do that they need to hit this one and hit the ground running like you said a massive week for a multitude of reasons home game winnable Colts team uh and you know not going into the bye having be uh Losers of three straight at that point so see what happens Patriots come home next uh weekend to take on the Colts 1 pm kickoff on Sunday myself and Taylor will be there we’ll also be here on Patriots press pass all week breaking down this game in further detail looking forward to Indie as well um we’ll uh we’ll tweet out our schedule I know we got
