I think we might have witnessed one of the greatest Premier League games in recent years Spurs and POA cogo are proving to be one of the most unpredictable teams in the League this season and there have been 30 goals in their last five matches unfortunately for them last night they couldn’t keep up with this Relentless Liverpool team creating some extremely quick attacks and exposing Posta cogo’s High defensive line in today’s video we’re going to be taking a look at how Liverpool’s rotations in Midfield allowed them to get so many players forward but we also need to understand why POA was so adamant on overloading the left side of the pitch and why this rarely seemed to work effectively let’s take a look welcome to talk sport my name is karmac from football meta Liverpool topped the league going into Christmas taking full advantage of Chelsea’s goalless draw to Everton and regaining a four-point lead at the top of the table with a game in hand Spurs on the other hand are stuck in the middle of the table with only one win in their last five Premier League matches but POA glu’s aggressive philosophy has certainly made them one of the most entertaining teams in the league and currently have the best attacking record this season but a struggling defensive line is having to adapt to a number of missing players we’re going to start this analysis with Liverpool and how their aggressive press instantly set the tone for the match Annie slaugh has adopted a number of different pressing shapes this season depending on the opposition and the players at his disposal in last night’s match against spurs’ buildup shape Liverpool opted for a pretty aggressive man oriented press with Diaz and Salah on the two center backs back and soas Li on basuma in the center this meant that gako would pick up the right back in Pedro porro and the left back Spence would be picked up by Trent Alexander Arnold we’ll take a look at how Spurs tried to take full advantage of this flank when building their attacks but for the vast majority of the time Liverpool were able to force Spurs to play the ball forward into Solan or keski where the center backs could regain possession and Liverpool could start their attacks forer was instantly put under pressure with a familiar mistake in the second minute with his attempt pass into Spence being intercepted by Salah in situations where Spurs were able to play it further up the pitch then Liverpool were able to quickly regain possession and they wouldn’t waste time playing it Forward often looking for Salah in behind and taking full advantage of spurs’ offensive players attempting an aggressive counter press Liverpool were able to control the opening minutes of the game with this aggressive press regaining possession and instantly playing it forward to expose the high defensive line but the true Danger from Liverpool started to come when they created their chances from a more structured position and some very subtle rotations in Midfield allowed them to create overloads in different areas of the pitch in possession Liverpool are consistently switching between two holding midfielders with mallister and grenberg and only one holding midfielder with mallister pushing further forward between the lines but a subtle rotation up top meant they were even more fluid when trying to beat the press the key players to look at alouis Diaz and soas and depending on which flank they were building their attacks they would rotate and occupy the space as the striker for example if possession shifts over to the right Diaz would act as the striker and SAS would give support to Salah on the flank while if possession was moving over to the left soas would pick up the position in the center and Diaz would rotate alongside gaka we can see that in this clip here Liverpool are being pressed high up the pitch and possession shifts into Trent he lays it off into Gomez who plays It Forward into Salah who has support from saas line and Diaz is acting as the striker as possession shifts to the opposite flank Diaz shifts over to help gako and now Salah and SAS rotate centrally subsequently freeing the flank for Tren who in this situation plays a very clever ball over the top for Salah we can see this 424 shape in more detail here with the Wingers having support out wide what’s interesting about this shape is that Liverpool will consistently alternate who picks up which position so in this case it’s gako moving centrally and DS out wide and on the right it’s often soers slide that picks up possession on the flank with Salah ready to cut inside in this move in fact Liverpool find a switch into Diaz who beats the defender and has gakpo in support to take the shot these constant rotations on the defensive line allowed Liverpool to find a lot of passing combinations and a lot of their goals came from this Central rotation their second goal is a perfect example of this with Gomez finding a perfect path through the middle into saas line who now has lots of support on the Left Flank with gako and Diaz laying the ball off onto the edge of the box and there are four players running running in behind to meet the cross while Liverpool’s thirdd goal also highlights this shape with sasl flicking the ball forward into Salah before running forward to add support now these rotations and support out wide also highlight a second fundamental reason why Liverpool was so dangerous in the final third and that is because of the close proximity of the three players on the defensive line with a deep run from mallister also adding to the attack as Liverpool gains control of the pitch the width was held mostly by Trent on the right flank and gakpo on the left left meaning Diaz soas and Salah were perfectly positioned in the center of the pitch to meet all crosses their first goal is an excellent example of this with Trent Alexander Arnold picking out the perfectly timed run by Diaz into the box all of Liverpool’s goals in the second half came from counterattacking situations as Spurs inevitably had to push forward to try and get back into the game leaving their defensive line exposed but that doesn’t mean these goals were inherently easy to score and Liverpool was still able to find some perfectly timed passing combinations to find Space further forward and what was incredible to see was the amount of players and the speed at which they moved forward their fourth goal is a great example of this with Robertson rushing forward to join the attack and outnumbering spurs’ defensive line overall it was an incredible offensive performance from Liverpool but Spurs were still able to get three goals past them and Posta cogu did attempt some dangerous rotations in possession as well Spurs had a completely different approach depending on which flank they were attempting to build their attacks down firstly on the right these attacks were a lot more direct looking for a ball in behind over Robertson for kulvi to chase on occasion finding space in behind but not being able to play the final pass into the box but for the vast majority of the game and specifically in the first half Spurs wanted to build their attacks down the Left Flank as mentioned earlier Liverpool opted for a pretty aggressive man oriented press in the first phase of spurs’ buildup which would mean Trent would have to push forward onto Spence however Spurs realized that Spence would often end up in space and with Force to playing the ball very quickly they were able to move up the pitch countless times as Trent didn’t have time to push forward to apply pressure this quick pass to the left would also mean Madison would move over onto this flank and Spurs ended up with big clusters of players on this side of the pitch with Salan also adding support on occasion keski would also rotate more centrally attacking forward but again were let down by their final pass into the box not being able to beat the Defenders a lot of the times Liverpool were able to stop this by having grenberg also shifting over to this side of the pitch with Gomez moving over onto sun to stop this overload but this did also leave a lot of space on the opposite flank for Spurs to look for the switch in play their goal to make it 5-2 did come from this cluster on the Left Flank with keski shifting over before finding an excellent combination with Salan in the center and their attack did look more threatening with the introduction of Brennan Johnson for the last 30 minutes of the game linking up well with salanki to make it 5-3 but overall Spurs were their biggest enemies in the final third misplacing passes and losing possession easily it’s a result that firmly cements Liverpool’s dominant start to the season with slot getting this team to play some really entertaining football and while at times this season I’ve personally felt Liverpool have been a little bit Lucky in some of their results this match shows that they have the players and the tactics to go all the way this season and it’s going to be increasingly difficult for any team in the top four to catch up to them meanwhile it’s been a mixed week for Spurs and postao thrashing Southampton 5- nil in their previous Premier League game and beating man united on Thursday to make it to the caribel cup semi-final But ultimately this result against Liverpool will give Posta kogo a lot to think about and while key players are set to return from injury in the near future there is definitely still a lot of work that needs to be done if he wants to take this team back to competing for the European places but what did you make of this match between Liverpool and Spurs leave your thoughts in the comments down below and if you enjoyed this video I have more tactical breakdowns on my channel football Mentor thanks for watching
