lookie here off the Maui tournament the Memphis Tigers are back at home uh this matchup now upcoming with Louisiana Tech uh for Memphis a uh a good a trip to Maui where they won the first two games in the tournament defeating Yukon and defeating Michigan State before Auburn eventually thumped them in the champ chionship game Louisiana Tech coming in here as a double digigit Road dog into the FedEx forum on a Wednesday night Matt Cox to you you’re going to start the discussion and have an official play what’s up sorry TJ I have to do it but I’m going to go against your Memphis Tigers here let me pull up the official uh historical ATS splits for Penny um as a home favorite the last three years sorry while my computer refreshes penny has not been good they they have he has been very notoriously strong at rising to play good teams meet the moment they’ve actually been very good on the road the last two seasons I just think the way that um you know that the guys he goes after the way they play they seem to be unfazed by kind of the pressure of the moment on the road and in big neutral sight environments how you know we saw how well they played in Maui but now you come you know come back from the island again got that Maui hangover lingering and we’ve seen them again at home lay some eggs against some I would say mediocre to bad competition but Louisiana Tech is probably better than that type of of of team and they got a real Force up front and Daniel bacho uh the big losses to will Jeffers though one of Louisiana Tech’s key players I think now they’ve had some time to get acclimated without him they look more like a cohesive unit if you look at talvin Hesters last couple of Seasons I mean Louisiana Tech does not lose by more than 10 to anybody they’ve gone to Colorado State and played well they went to New Mexico last year and played pretty well two tough Mountain West environments Memphis was a great home spot but I think a tech under Hester with bacho as kind of the spine of that team on both ends they have a real gritty Savvy point guard sha Newman I think can handle the pressure and I still think Memphis is shooting over their heads when we saw Tyrese Hunter make shots and those friendly Maui uh gyms and the Cozy confines I don’t think they’re going to fall tonight I think you get a sleepy effort from the Tigers they probably win this game but I think Louisiana Tech keeps it very close I you know again I don’t think I’ve seen Louisiana Tech lose by more than um 12 points in nonon under Hester the last couple years so I think it’s a great spot here for uh the boys from Rustin all right interesting Jeff uh again for Memphis it is an all transfer team with the guards including PJ Hagerty the Fantastic freshman last year at Tulsa Memphis lit a little nil money his way he’s now with penny at Memphis here with hean Hunter and I’ve been impressed with Dane dja the transfer who’s been a couple of different places um as a big man a left-handed player in the low block so there are pieces clearly for Memphis Matt makes the case for Latt coming in here thoughts Jeff including maybe something on the total he’s GNA have to play well Danger tonight against aacho who’s certifiably very good big um Matt made kind of the points that I would make you’re coming off of of a a trip where you played really well you hit a bunch of big shots he stayed in close games even won close games against some really good teams PNY AR was what 28 and 12 as a dog in his career but as a favorite Matt talked about it just not very good you’re not Jeff real quick at as a home favorite the last three years 10 and 20 against the spread and get this with four days off for more uh seven and 17 so I think there is maybe you know again probably just noise I don’t want to read the trends here but there is some evidence that maybe they’re not in the best spot tonight that that is striking to hear that kind because Jeff you were talking the opposite that when they were an underdog and Maui over and over and over again ride the dog because he was covering at what like a 70% clip now this is almost the exact opposite yeah they’re a must they’re a must bet quite frankly Memphis as an underdog but again you’re not you’re now a favorite a double digit favorite and you’re playing against a quality probably top 100 team that makes threes hits their free throws really doesn’t turn it over that much I think the only knock is you are stepping up here ltech in a big way but yeah this seems like all the Sleepy type spot let down game coming home off of again regardless what Memphis did in that title game they outweighed Expectations by a wide margin they’re making a lot of Threes you got to figure that number number one three-point percentage is going to come down a little bit yeah you’re going to slow it down if you’re ltech I agree with Matt here I think they play this game within 10 for sure all right interesting Matt Cox does have the official play here and you did not go first half as we lock you in it’s on the full game you’ve gone first half a couple of times did you contemplate that very much especially with the whole idea that Memphis might be a little lesser in the first half of the game might wake up in the second half how much did you contemplate it I I I did but the what I like to look at sometimes is uh coaching Tendencies and the one thing with Hester is if bacho has two fouls he will sit like for sure so that sometimes you walk into a first half bet you have a coach who wants to sit his best player for 15 minutes which I don’t think’s the right thing to do by the way but Hester’s kind of old school in that regard and that’s what I’ve noticed I think the data actually bears that out too um so I Again full game just a better spot here in Memphis you know last year against like South Florida and SP teams they actually got up big first half um and let those teams kind of creep back in so I think the full game window makes more sense here to me what one thing I saw and I I’m realistic I’ll put the uh I’ll put the Hat on just because na do expected it um the one thing I saw that concerned me against Auburn that we saw all last year they didn’t guard on the perimeter and then they didn’t rebound on missed shots and that you can’t have that combination you have to do one of the other either get out on the shooters and especially if they’re going to miss you got to get rebounds don’t give up Second Chances how about the the Tiger schedule before we depart they’re going to play this game they’re going to play Arkansas State on the weekend but then penny has back-to- back games at Clemson and then at Virginia y then they play Mississippi State at home and then they play Old Miss so I mean you’ve got a gauntlet there out of conference out of the American Conference to end up in December you better take advantage of this tonight let’s see if they will take advantage Matt Cox says Louisiana Tech will keep it close enough [Music]
