will start with question for Coach yeah good to uh see everybody um really good fall for us and just kind of recapping uh a lot of new players uh completely new team and uh it was very productive started day one of school with strength and conditioning skill instruction uh really good six or seven week period there then moved into our team segment you know the last six and a half weeks and feel like we got a lot accomplished uh relative to Player Development uh developing an identity or a process of winning or success for this team hammered that really well uh learned a lot about the players on the roster and uh feel like we’re at a good stopping point you know moving them into December in their individual development time and uh which is really key for when we turn the corner on the new season and feel like we’re in a really good spot uh done a good job in in All Phases uh this roster has uh academically obviously have to finish that off but performing very well there um really good stuff off the field um so really excited about where we’re headed uh finishing up with some player meetings the next couple days get them off for Thanksgiving break back for finals um and then on their own and then uh 2025 right around the corner excited about it coach uh any injury up updates how’s step and uh Chris Stanfield doing injury updates stepen um had a foot injury at the end of the or during the summer um which he’s fully recovered from uh he had an illness uh that kept him out for two weeks and then I made a decision that with only a couple days left one game I didn’t want to get into any type of soft tissue deal by ramping him up too quickly um I think he could have played this weekend had we not been in that situation that we were in or if we had a couple weeks to go uh we would have had time to build him back to that so he’s fine 100% back in the weight room this morning uh swinging yesterday you know for the first time in a couple weeks so has a good you know offseason time to build himself back up to full strength which is good uh Chris Stanfield um you know just had a uh lower body you know injury where he probably would have played had we were in the season and uh again I just made a decision that the risk reward of doing it or or further hurting it was not worth you know one game on Friday or you know some opportunities last weekend really happy with his performance you know in the fall and where he’s at as a player and more important get him healthy so he can train the way that he needs to to be be ready so uh pretty good you know bill of health for our team and how’s Devon cheran doing in his recovery yeah he’s doing all right um I don’t anticipate him pitching this season at all um you know he’s probably um you know I I’m not overly optimistic about that hey coach uh I know it’s been a little bit I just wanted to get your take on the trip to buxy and this is like the only place you can put guys in front of 5,000 fans in in the fall and get them accustomed to Big crowds and everything I just wanted to how beneficial was that especially to a guys who’s never played college baseball before yeah I think it was very beneficial and you know one of my things is I want to do everything by Design not by default we had a few things going on obviously uh some small stadium Renovations like we were fine to scrimmage and do our work on the field I wasn’t real comfortable with bringing an outside team in and playing at the Box while we were doing that stuff so we were going to have to go on the road but for this team with as many new players uh we probably would have gone on the road anyways um you know simple thought was just get them around each other more get to talk to each other stay a couple nights in a hotel and it was really beneficial from that end I felt like we came back from that a little bit more connected you know the last three weeks which was great and then what you mentioned jock all those fans was that was awesome and you know we had some experienced really highly successful players from other programs that haven’t played in environments like that and so to get past that and really understand what that’s going to feel like I think was really valuable you know whether that’s a transfer or freshman and how I designed those two outside games for instance in that first one Cas Evans is gon to be a great pitcher for us he’s going to be a great pitcher for us so to get him with 5,000 people in there we’re leading four to one um and have that heartbeat you know going for the first time in a college outing in that setting like that is unbelievable valuable experience and um he performed well and I think learned a lot from that you know very similar when we were over at Louisiana Lafayette being on the road and I think we were ahead like 9 to three or nine to four and you know put William Schmidt you know into a situation like that because they’re both going to pitch super important innings for three years here it was really really valuable and I want to thank the fans in a big time way like that exceeded you know my expectations of what that would be like and you know even from a coach that’s been doing this a long time you look up and go like whoa like all right we’re back let’s go um what a great great weekend that was uh right here uh you mentioned some of the you know all the new pictures you guys have brought in what has the I guess learning process been like this fall just kind of feeling out some of the new arms that you guys have looks like there’s been a lot of high-powered velocity arms but just kind of yours and I I guess coach G’s conversations about how you kind of just Cypher through all of that and and maybe who’s stood out or anything like that yeah I think you know there was going to become there was going to be a year where we had a lot of pitching turnover I mean we’ve had 18 pitchers signed Pro contracts the last two seasons I think we had a sec record of number of pitchers drafted in last year’s draft of guys that performed really well for us you know we’re part of a national championship team and I think we have the second most wins in college baseball over the last three years and so to a lot of guys going out we had to bring a lot of guys in I think probably we 10 of our top 12 performers from last year’s pitching staff moved on with I think you know Kate Anderson and Gavin gidry being the only exceptions to that so you know redoing this thing um was a pretty intense effort to be honest with you uh what I’ve learned is I’m I’m very excited about the strike throwing ability I thought they did a really good job of getting ahead in the count with first pitch strikes two out of the first three and they all have some uniqueness to what they’re able to do which I always think that’s really important in building a good pitching staff I really uh want to commend coach yki in the job that he’s done with those guys um you know along with Jamie TCO our director of analytics the intentional intentionality of what they’re doing on a daily basis is really high level and I think we have talented guys that are really benefiting from that and um I feel pretty good I I think um you know I don’t think there’s a a rotation today uh that we’re going to start the year with I think we’ll probably stretch out about eight guys as pitch counts when we get back and see kind of who fits at the front of the game the back of the game one thing I noticed you guys know me I’ve always liked to have one of our best guys at the end of the game I think that’s really important for a lot of reasons um but the best teams that we played last year they had that you know what I mean um you know that eighth and ninth inning was really tough where they could suffocate you with pitching and defense and I don’t quite have today who that’s going to be I think there’s some excellent candidates for that but we’ll probably stretch out about eight guys you know to to get their pitch counts where if we wanted to have them start or go deep into the game they could have some you know hybrid guys and then you just pair some of it down for your your high Leverage relievers so excited about what I feel like we know about this pitching staff which is you know hard to do when you’re replacing 10 of the top 12 for good reasons of course kind of the same vein there how much of this was classic fall ball getting to know the guys getting to know their their skill set how much of it was really this on the staff to get as much analytics as much data as you can so that you can really put the pieces together with this large of a group coming in yeah I think there’s a couple things I’m always I’m really a believer in process and but it’s not a process if you don’t know what it is and so day one is day one you know of skill work day one of Team practice is day one and then you have to have some found foundational elements that you’re really trying to build on so we did not deviate from that at all if anything we intensified it so we’re putting the players in position to develop and improve and they’re understanding what this team’s going to need to do to be successful so I feel pretty good about that like in in some ways you know we’re maybe even a little ahead of where I would have expected in terms of that and maybe even in a terms of having some feel for the team like I I feel like going into these individual meetings that I’m in now that I’m doing with guys the next couple days I like the sense of maybe self-awareness that some of the players have of where they’re at and what they need to do to take the next step for us to be a better team so you know you can’t quantify any of that other than to say I think being intentional about what we’re doing I think is is paid off in a productive fall and and gonna give us a good starting point when we come back in January okay um we had a lot of questions coach Kelly about roster building and I think you’ve indicated for the current atmosphere is not your favorite way to go about putting together a team how have you had to embrace it make yourself have you made yourself like it any better you know how how have you tried to go about thriving in this new era yeah I think first off I think you know I’d say this about players like experience is the best coach you’re ever going to have in your life and as I get older you know I hope I have more wisdom more experience to draw from in terms of how to operate better and make great decisions to put LSU baseball in a great spot I think this is not a baseball thing or an LSU say there’s a lot of things that have come down the pipe and are coming down the pipe that are so different than what we’ve done that I don’t spend much time again thinking whether I like it or I don’t like let’s just try to do a really solid job I think for me every decision that’s made on everything but specifically the roster is is this going to positively impact LSU baseball whether that’s the number of freshmen you recruit the number you guys number of players you take from the transfer portal and build a team that’s going to give us a chance to consistently compete to be an Omaha caliber team you know because the College World Series is it’s the best you know that’s where everybody always wants to be so that’s different every year so I’ll walk you through kind of my thought process of it so you show up incredibly talented player in Dylan Cruz great player in Trey Morgan I was very familiar with Jordan Thompson after accepting the job like we had a long way to go like on the pitching side of things I mean if you think about 22 without Riley Cooper Eric Risman Paul jves uh Tyler mcmanis as a catcher and then getting to add Jacob Barry you know who came with me like it’s almost impossible to think about that team without those guys you know and you know we didn’t win the Championship or go to Omaha but always be really proud of that team you know so understanding that it was going to be important well where were we short we were short with Frontline pitching and then maybe we were going to have to replace you know a great hitter and and Jacob Barry so you know you’re not going to be able to do this every year but to get Paul skes to LSU Tommy White to LSU like that’s how you win a National Championship I mean that’s how you win the national championship and so I think it’s assessing year to year well last year you know were replacing eight of the nine guys you know that won the National Championship um probably could have even been a little more aggressive on the position player side of it than we were uh but we needed to replace 200 Innings between Paul skes and Ty Floyd and successfully did that with Luke Heman and Gage jump well now 18 pitchers have gone to pro baseball in two years we had to be more aggressive and rebuilding the pitching staff so you know going and getting some guys that have thrown a bunch of innings was really important you know in terms of the transfers that we brought in but then we in my opinion we have four High School pitchers that we brought in that are going to be massive Staples of our program for as long as they’re here you know and William Schmidt case Evans Maverick Grizzy and Cooper Williams so you don’t ignore that um and then on the position player side um you know I think I learned a little bit from last year and really excited about you know bringing in you know Danny Dickinson Chris Stanfield Luis Hernandez Dalton Beck you know to to give us more balance left and right speed power solid hitting skills and then complement those with guys that got a lot of aats last year on a team that needs to be better offensively and they were fine they were fine statistically I’m just talking about a Omaha National Championship bar and then again on the position player side of it Derek kille Kate Aron Bey Ryan Costello Mike Ryan like these are guys I’m really excited I’m not intentionally leaving anybody out but these are guys I’m really excited about so I think you have to look at it I’m going to get this wrong as a PE major but like the microscope view telescope view like every year like the needs have been different and how I assess it is what’s best for our program and nothing else really matters you know in terms of my beliefs or how I want to do it what’s best for our program with uh Jake Brown and Dalton Beck how have how has have their I guess paths as two-way guys gone this fall and do you anticipate that continuing into um like January February I do um I think you know you mentioned Jake he’s a really talented athlete and usually with talented athletes um you’re always expecting a jump at some point and he’s really made a jump on the position player side of it if you’re asking me from year one toe two fall who’s maybe improved the most of that group he would be the name that comes to mind as a hitter and a position player he obviously has a terrific arm so the pitching thing’s always in your back pocket but I anticipate him being a key member of our offense and he’s stronger if you saw him physically you would notice the difference in in how he looks in a uniform so I’m excited about that you know with Dalton he’s shown good flashes on both sides he’s been a great strike thrower as a pitcher very reliable to knowing what we’re going to get I feel like we can put him in a game as a pitcher doesn’t need to be at the front of the game or a closer or anything like that but I definitely trust putting him in the game and then he’s taken some really good at bats I think that day we were in buxy and played 21 Innings I think he was six for six in terms of quality at bats a big home run in the chief Jam World Series last week and is you know was right in the mix as a lot of guys are for you know whatever you want to call it Outfield you know DH type of bats it’s a high highly competitive deal um and he’s right in the middle of that so I think they’ve done a good job and um we’ll probably continue with both of them that way uh just building on the highly competitive angle I mean catcher you have you rotating four different guys in throughout the entire fall just maybe from where they started in the fall to maybe where they ended fall just assess where that group is and how how they how they did this year or this fall yeah I think with catching I have a different barometer it’s almost like the Umpire like if you don’t notice them then they’re doing their job so I feel like we had way more days um that we didn’t notice them at the end of the Fall then maybe at the beginning so the Improvement coach Jordan deserves a ton of credit he works so hard at that part of you know development and pretty feel pretty good with where that’s at in a combination of offense and defense I think three of them were probably in within our top five hitters of the fall or six at least um you know with Luis Hernandez Kate Aron Bey and Blaise prester you know Blaise showed a lot of power I think get seven or eight home runs uh Cade was exceptional I think he hit over 360 or 370 which is hard to do as a freshman I thought not only were the the statistical numbers good the quality of his at bats were good you know opposite field homers you know that kind of thing and then Lis was really steady on both sides you know hit hit well over 300 really good on base um hit well with runners in scoring position and he caught exceptional and uh feel like um we’re in a much better place there than when we started I think I counted is it eight Fridays to your season opener first first game something like that two months man you got me I don’t know um I do feel like we’re right around the 80-day Mark um so maybe 85 somewhere in there so yeah that sounds about right and kind of how this works is uh once once we get to Wednesday this week is a complete off week and then we immediately go into dead week next week and then final so the coaching part of it on the field for us is done then they go home for Christmas break and we’ve had a good culture here guys returning a little earlier and taking care of their business on their own time I anticipate that will continue um but then we can’t get back on the field with them until January 13 and then from there it’s February 14 is the opener so it’s like a little this happened last year it’s a little shorter ramp of what the time we have with them until the season I think the NCA is changing that next year which is good for pitcher health and I don’t think that’s a northern School cold weather South warm weather issue it’s what’s best so we only have one more year of kind of the the short ramp when we get back which is good what’s your experience is a lot of hay in the barn in terms of guys trying to impress you or can somebody really make a surge from January 13th to oh the first game of yeah no the uh one thing I’ve learned about coaching this age group is the day-to-day consistency is so valuable if you can find that but it’s really hard to find you know even when you’re coaching high level players and there’s somebody that let’s just say a position player may be number 13 if you will on the on the depth chart you know total might end up being you know your third or fourth best player so there’s plenty of opportunity with that I like the feel that I have for where where we’re at and who we have and what we are and what guys need to do things will change and what I mean by that is somebody will really you know be better somebody might not be as good for whatever reason you know lights come on sometimes guys are different um they may be motivated by not being where they want to be and really kick it into another gear well they should have done that from the first day but they didn’t so is the human response to that positive or negative uh complacency you know never probably one of my least favorite words you know so hopefully nobody falls into that trap and you know there’s a good quote is like you know Success is Not owned it’s rented and you’re rinse du every day and that’s kind of like playing here you know in my opinion Michael brazwell um got got pretty seemed like he got a pretty good amount of work in at third base this fall um how has he looked at that position and and what are some other options that you’re sort of looking at at that spot now you have fall under your belt yeah I think he has done a good job I think one of the things that he did last year is he improved his lower body ability to play low which you have to be able to do a third base he will be an option there and maybe be the third baseman I also really like how he played at shortstop I think he improved from last year to this year and um you know that’s a possibility too um we feel great about the infield you know situation um you know stepen was hurt for the last three weeks um and we were Pro or sick excuse me it was sick uh we were really planning on you know putting him over on the left side the last three weeks um but didn’t have the opportunity to do that but I have full he’s you know probably our best defensive infielder regardless of where he plays in terms of how he makes plays um so you know he’s an option there uh Tanner Reeves you know Danny Dickinson played a lot over there um he I think he can play all three spots so we we still have some work to figure that out and I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing I think that the depth Mikey Ryan uh played very good defense at the back end of the Fall I’m really excited about him as a player uh he could probably do it um a little more comfortable at Short Stop because that’s where he’s played his whole life but I think we have some good options there and you might see some games where it’s a mixture of guys moving or in for a while in to play defense out because we want to pinch hit one of those good hitters another infielder goes in there you know total conventional way of playing baseball as youve guys gotten accustomed to see me do got time for one more J the last one for J yeah I just I saw a tweet from your strength coach Chris Martin from a couple weeks ago said 18 of the 20 position players reached new Max velocities and speed and there were 13 players that reached 20 miles an hour just can you talk about maybe the impact that you know he’s had early in his time here and just how you know the program is adapted to what he’s you know bringing to to the team yeah I’m happy to talk about that and got a couple players here with Danny and Anthony they can probably articulate on it even better than me but that’s a really important position you know you often hear in football it’s probably the most important position in the program I feel very similar about that in baseball with the way baseball has evolved he has several outstanding qualities uh number one is he’s a great worker you know he’s here all the time and he’s excited to be here all the time number two he’s incredibly intelligent I mean incredibly intelligent he articulates well probably the thing I like him the most he’s the most bought in on what he has to do to get the players better and bayin is a really important piece of being able to execute your job and I think the players would tell you that they feel like coach Martin is in their corner and doing the right things because of his intelligence because of his experience came from the Astros one of the more Progressive organizations in all of baseball and he’s made a really good impact and I feel very fortunate that we were able to get him um you know we obviously have had some turnover in that position for a variety of reasons uh but I feel like we found our our guy you know in terms of expertise intelligence buying um very thankful to our Administration for supporting paying the position the way it needs to be paid to give us a chance to retain a person as High Caliber as Chris Thanksgiving PL Thanksgiving plate well I’m 5’7 and I still have to wear a baseball uniform at 47 years old so I can’t be as aggressive as my studs over here with a good metabolism so I actually try to get into my uh Fitness and dieting routine starting on Wednesday so bad timing something like that thanks guys
