a mad mad game at the etad here is how the table stands after 16 games Liverpool are top despite dropping points at home to Fulham but Chelsea now are just two points behind although the Reds do have a game in hand Forest win over Villa means that they are up into fourth city slip down into fifth place and after their resounding win at Southampton Tottenham and now back into the top half of the table with a goal difference of plus 17 in the bottom half no surprise at 19th and 20th of both decided to make a managerial change I switch did win at wolves it’s not enough to lift them out of the relegation places big win for Palace over their Rivals Brighton put some daylight between themselves and the Drop Zone and of course Lester had already made that managerial change Daren Lewis is here lean Sanderson is here and we’re going to start by talking about the the Manchester Derby but before we do just a quick word Darren on the fact that we’ve now got two more teams at the bottom end of the table following on from the the sacking of the of the Leicester boss we’ve now got wolves and Southampton joining forces with them and and making the change yeah they have I mean the Southampton One For Me Maybe is not as surprising because of the the way they’ve gone about their business this season the Wolves one did a little bit because I almost felt that they turned the corner when they went to Fulham and beat him 4-1 I thought okay right this will be wolves now they’ll get themselves out of the relegation Zone and they’ve almost gone back to how they were at the start of the season so that one there I feel a bit for Gary nil I thought he did a good job down there I thought he was unfortunate the way he kind of was outed at BN W went to wolves I thought he was he did a good job um so that one maybe come as a little bit more of a surprise but either way when you look at where they both are bottom two at the bottom of the the Premier League wolves 40 goals conceded you’re never ever going to survive any Premier League Seasons conceding 40 goals at this stage so far at the season um so as I said yeah I was more surprised about the Gary nil one but the Southampton one to me no surprise whatsoever as I say we’ll come back to that and we’ll look at the the decisions in in detail a bit later on should start with you on the Manchester Derby man united back we’re back I’ll just read a newspaper no we’re not back good times are rolling that did feel good yesterday I mean let’s be honest the Manchester Derby wasn’t the most exhilarating thrilling game but I’ll take that was a good last 10 minutes it was and it the quality I think I think you said it I heard you on the TV yesterday saying we couldn’t really anticipate you know what this Derby was going to be like and it’s true like the quality of both sides but honestly like Amad yesterday unbelievable you know Bruno fern the steps up he should have scored earlier on as well about 10 minutes before that you’d expect him to put that in the back of the net Manchester City were poor but Manchester United I was delighted for the fans everyone there it just felt nice you know to finally get this is what the fans wanted when amarim came in because he’s only been there a month so there aren’t going to be wholesale changes and they said look we know that challenging for for the top honors is is going to come a bit further down the line but in the short term we want to be competitive in these big games because Manchester United’s record particularly away from home has been terrible and they’ve been really bruising defeats over that time by city by Liverpool by teams that really hurt and this was was a competitive game for Manchester United even if they’d lost it at the end they’d at least turned up for it yeah and I think the same at the Emirates against Arsenal as well until the 55th minute I know Arsenal took it to another level and it was almost like how are Manchester United going to score but I think the decisions he’s made off the field you know Garo rashford leaving him out of the squad entirely was a massive decision but he came out he fronted up spoke about it and was put to rest I think if this was under Eric ten hog things would have been spoken about still till now even if Manchester unit would have won that game they would have still been talking about the players left out but again you know you want to build a good culture at the club and I like Ruben amim I like he’s only been there a month but I like what he’s doing I think a love the media like him he seems a pretty likable guy but he has to get results and from what I’m seeing what he’s doing it’s almost like he’s trying out certain players in certain positions to then see what he’s looking for and I like what he’s doing so far not getting carried away but we’ll enjoy that yeah but you’ve got to enjoy the moments when they when they come along and and the the point about amarim and and the decisions around rashford and garach show is is an interesting one and particularly from a media point of view Darren because he was very very honest about his decision as to why they weren’t in the squad and he he outlined his reasons but he was very clever as well about it Kell as well because I think for him to leave them out for this week and suggest that a new cycle begins on Monday means that he’s given him himself riger room and he hasn’t created a set of negative headlines around rashford that neither he nor rashford or the club can extricate themselves from and to a large extent he’s right you know I think rashford now he has said has to want it but clearly from the point that rashford is in and I’m sitting next to two Sportsmen here who tell you all about the fact that in any sport you can lose form you can lose confidence in any job all the people watching uh around the world now you can lose confidence at anything you do at any point at which you’re doing it but it’s how do you get out of that and sometimes it’s just by putting one foot in front of the other he might need a little bit of help but he might need a little bit of stick as well I still do think there is a good player there and I think amim does as well otherwise he wouldn’t give him another chance just a point on on on you you mentioned the media as well the media like him but why do the media like him he’s a fantastic Communicator he’s engaging he’s compelling he has that Charisma that comes with managing a big club and I think if you look at all the big clubs around World football particularly in the Premier League now they all the successful ones the ones able to engage fans engage players engage the media they’ve got that X Factor about them and that’s what amm has you could listen to him all day and he at least appears honest and and straight forward which you can imagine goes down extremely well with the with the players Clarity you need um I know we’ll get to the pep in a second but it’s almost pep Pep Guardiola is very similar as well he’s very honest he said the problems they’re all my fault so what he’s done he’s taken away from everyone the whole idea is Pep under pressure is you know who’s to blame for this Pep’s taken away from that he is a guy who understands how to work the media amim does already and that’s the reason why I think he’ll do a good job also as well I I do think by being honest you almost buy yourself a little bit more time in certain aspects because when look at the end of almost 10 Hogs Reign everything was like a close shot the whole Jaden Sancho thing he never quite understood what was going on there is he back in is he not and I do think for ruam he speaks really well he comes go really well and I think when you have a big decision like leaving that rashford and gar because it’s it’s it’s Monumental those type of decisions I think if you just come out and say why you’ve done it I think a lot of people there there are going to be people that don’t agree with it but there will be people going you know what fair play that’s the reason why then I can respect that as long as that continues then I think that would be that that would be perfect and do you know what D I think I and I’ve said this on the show before man united are a superpower in World football to play for them to even play for them you have to be a top player yeah now I well not any more in recent years in recent years not so much that’s the point the standards are Fallen because there have been a lot of players that have been allowed to play for Man United I wouldn’t necessarily suggest are at the standard they would have been during the time when they were dominant in in in English football um and I think as far as amam is concerned I liked what he said there he said this is a huge Club we’ve got to raise that standard particularly at a time when people are losing their jobs he gave great context it was a master class really in PR if you like because he was hitting all the touch points he was getting all the pings of admiration from fans around the world even as he was speaking Yeah and I think in terms of the standard to be reached by players rashford listen I a huge rashford fan like anybody else yeah me and you always arguments about this we do but you know I accept that rashford for him to get back to where I think he can be he’s got to reach that standard on a week toe basis and every other player you know he he but he’s got a want to do it and I I think that’s the problem is that because I’m with you I wouldn’t say I’m the biggest rashford fan but we’ve seen certainly a couple of years ago when he’s at it he’s Unstoppable he’s pretty much Unstoppable but I think his his body language in recent times tells me is not someone that’s desperate to get back to that level he’s playing like three good games this season like you you’re both footballers right so cuz I I I see everywhere but I see it all the time and you know what it’s like when you’re in a a runner form what what is that like everyone say he’s got to get back to that ex Pros say and I’m always fascinated well you’re ex Pros you know what it’s like but I think he’s been in this run form for a long time I think the inconsistency I mean as a center forward we’re always judging our games upon how many goals we scor right some players throw away their boots I know the throw away boots every time he didn’t score go not not as bad as this where you go like two or three seasons where you’re playing three good games a season my standards were higher than that and I also demanded that from myself and that’s why I say like what Ben he saying it can’t just come from the manager you have to look from within and Gary Neville made a good point about the pressures of playing for Manchester United in the 90s like David Beckham the amount of pressure he was under the amount of scrutiny he was under that was what he meant to play for Man United they were Squad of players that was filled with superstars who did perform every week so if if they dropped off if David Beckham has a bad performance yes there’s going to be a lot of scrutiny but there are enough players around him that it’s not going to have the same I’m not saying one’s better or harder or easier than the other it that it’s just not apples and apples yeah but I think the players have to look at themselves is the put I’m making like you can’t always look at the managers all the time and think it’s down to the manager like well beny said it’s up to you to kind of I’ve never really been in a situation where it was like like two or three years where you’re kind of playing two or three good games a season realistically everybody’s said oh there’s a player in there there’s a player in there similar to Paul Pogba there’s a player in there I’m not saying rashford’s like the worst player to ever played for Man United but the inconsistency I’ll tell you what I I’ll give you an example right I remember when Gareth Bale went from South ampton to Spurs and the first couple of years of him signing a big fan for do you remember I sign with him yeah tough right and he had a nightmare and everyone was saying he he was big hype but there was nothing to him and I remember Harry rnap uh basically deciding that he was going to give him some tough love and not sort of mollycoddle him all the time and exploded into becoming a superstar I remember being at the very first game even at The Inter Milan game where he Sensational for Spurs and it was a really good example of how a sportsman can explode out of a out of a real rut that lasted around about 3 years but there was a player there and I think that we’re just in a less patient environment at the moment you know what I I found almost the most telling thing and he and he did specify as to whether this was rashford or gacho because he talked about them both together which I thought was very clever because he didn’t he didn’t single somebody out but one of the things he looked at were performances in in training which is what he reiterated after the game as well but before the match as well he said one of the things he’d been looking at was the way they interacted with the other players at the training ground and I I found that very interesting because I think you can look at performance and say do you know what you’re not reaching your levels this week so you’re not in the squad but to look at the communic ation and the interaction that that I found fascinating you know he’s almost without saying he’s I won’t say he’s attacking someone’s character but basically’s saying he doesn’t like the influence that one of these two players have got on other players and that could be one of the worst things in a dressing room when you allow one player or two players to affect other players like Amed at the minute is absolutely flying but he’s a young kid so he can be e easily influenced by someone like a rashford who’s 27 years old who’s almost a senior player now so the fact that he came out and addressed that straight away that should all of a sudden make everyone else in that dress room go you know what even if they’re letting their standards drop we can’t do it because look what’s happened to those two if that can happen to Marcus who’s seen as The Shining Light for Manchester United at one stage we all thought at some point he might even kep in Manchester United at one point if you could allow him to do that and leave him out the squad then what does that say about us so I think again from Ruben amarim I think he was so clever and so positive by him saying that because even garnacho might think well I’ve done really well for Manchester United put to this point but I’m not a superstar yet if he can just leave me at the squad and allow other players to come in and play I need to Buck my ideas up so it I’m really fascinated to see how you get past this and what happens next because if they’re left out again of the squad then it’s like okay understand been at man united for a number of years though also is it a good thing or a bad thing to be included in the League Cup squad for the quarterfinal against Tottenham and maybe miss out on the game against Villa at the weekend or will they think well you know we’re going to wait you out for this one because we’re putting you back into the the Premier League match I don’t and I don’t know perhaps Manchester United will feel that they aren’t they don’t have Targets in the league so the is the bigger game but again that’s going to come down to well if I’m rashford I’m thinking you know oracho put me in that team in the league cup because I’m going to show everyone else and the manager that it was wrong to leave me out because if rash plays in the week and scores a hattick everyone go that’s the reaction we wanted but if he plays against uh Tottenham in the league cup and walks around doesn’t do anything then every single person not just Manchester United fans football fans would go see Ruben Amar was right to leave him out because look at his body language and I think Manchester United have been calling out and crying out for this for years the culture at the club has been really poor whether that be off the field on the field a lot of players looking like they don’t want to be there and it’s been something that’s been spoken about Ruben amarim has done something that s Alex Ferguson did before it doesn’t matter who you are you know he did it with yapan Roy King David Beckham it didn’t matter even vanis in the end you know it doesn’t matter who you are you have to do what I’m asking of you you know it’s not about his way on the highway I don’t get that feeling from Ruben amarim because I play for coaches like that you have to do everything they’re asking of you down to a tea I think there’s wiggle room with Ruben am look at Ahmad under Eric tenh hard Ahmad got sent out on loan because everyone’s saying oh you know every 10 hard did a really good job with him he didn’t really he sent him to Sunderland and he done well and then he he didn’t even start against Arsenal under Ruben as well this year and he’s been Manchester United’s best player so I love the leadership of Ruben amarim and he’s fronting up he’s not doing what Eric ten hog did and was saying oh you know we we we played well against Liverpool when it was like seven oh yeah it was we we did okay no you want the manager to come out and say it wasn’t good enough I don’t like it when they slate players and say things like that but like just say it wasn’t good enough and we need to be better that’s all you’re asking right them to to say oh it was so bad and we’re never going to recover so I think the leadership qualities that Ruben amarim showing is quite like a great example of how to manage a team I like the fact that rashford also posted after the game as well I know it’s a bit of like cat and mouse is that not a little bit sad Marcus rashford posted a picture clearly from his own sort of his own sitting room of him watching the game on telly with and and Manchester United’s admin on social media gave sent him back a little red heart and it was just I thought it was I thought it was quite sad somebody who’s grown up as a manual Isa supporter and been a kid at the Academy and gets dropped and and left out of the squad in such a public way and it is always a big story and yes he’s one of the highest paid players or the second high paid player and should be the focus of everybody’s scrutiny because that’s what comes with that still it’s quite it feels like if it if it’s the end it’s a sad end it is a sad end um but it might not be the end well and that’s the thing you’d be grateful for a football story aroundus crying one minute and the next think but if he comes back it it makes a fantastic story The the question now Darren is the city come back how on Earth the city come back because every time we think that they’ve you know what’s the thing every time we think it’s safe to go back in the water it’s it’s just it it feels like it’s ingrained in them now that it that it’s just because the way they conceded the goals was so panicky you know what the worst part about it though is we probably all felt that it was coming because even even because they weren’t as dominant as they usually are and the way that they’re playing you almost feel like when it’s at 1- nil neither team was playing well but Manchester United started to get a foot hold in the game and you just thought once they went to one0 I went there’s only one team that’s going to win it and it’s quite funny the way the winning goal went in because it was just chaos wasn’t it the run from ammed the touch over the goalkeeper who was no man’s land he manages to beat the goalkeeper and two players on the line somehow manages to find the net but it’s a big job for Pep and it’s a huge job but I don’t think any of us really know what’s going to happen next because for himself personally he’s been one of the best managers the last 15 20 years that’s just fact but we’ve never seen him in this position where he’s had to almost rebuild a team he hasn’t got everything going his own way we’ve seen him rebuild a team not not not yeah but not to this where they’re this bad like I don’t think we’ve ever seen a pep team that’s this bad where every single team that plays against them feels they can beat them that team or are they a collection of players that have lost confidence I think it’s bit than both I think you got players that have have lost confidence but also at the minute they’re just a team at the minute that can’t get after teams haven’t got the same energy haven’t got the same Fear Factor I think you’re seeing teams go up against them and they’re just they’re almost running over them I mean a friend of mine said even Kyle Walker was even diving too [Laughter] slow that was embarrassing that was quite a moment but it was almost symptomatic of where they are needing to use that rather than their ability that they’ve managed to establish over a long period of time I can’t help feeling that if they were to go out and get two top midfielders in the M of a zuberi that we could see even now a spectacular even if they leave themselves with too much to do and they lose by sort four points or something but they have a sensational run in the second half of the season with that protection in front of the back four that gets them confident again and believing again because in Manchester City and for all that run we talk about what is it one win in their last 11 uh eight defeats in their last 12 it’s a two goals at least conceded in almost every game in their last 11 so that run of 11 is one win eight defeats one clean sheet crazy I mean I think don’t win leagues like that show two weeks ago I was saying same as you right that they will still find a way right now this type of form that is not winning the league but when you say that exact and that’s key but but when you say they will find a way this city can’t find a way but if they got reinforcements in January which is what two weeks away then what yeah but but it depends what reinforcements come in because if you look at Pep’s history of signing players like Ain Harland who is ready to go he is a worldclass player he’s turned these players into world class so the bruy at wolves wasn’t world class but turned him into world class rodri uh greish Villa good play but he turned him into a spectacular this might be the first window I think I think people might pick you up on the I think was better at V well you would say it’s world class I would not V vill I would no see I would say it doesn’t but but but the phrase is is whether or not he was better at Villa or better better I’m not I’m not arguing I’m just saying I think there will there is an argument to be made around him would he was fantastic but to say he’s world class he wasn’t one of the best players in the at the time but I think now in this window might be the time where pep goes into the window buys ready made players I remember you played with a guy called loric sonar yeah he was absolutely incredible and I I remember you raving about him at the time and you bought him into January if I remember right no B me in start of season start of the Season yeah but he didn’t get going until Midway no the first half of the season was incredible January time he fell off okay okay sorry moving on or yours KY you two want to take this a different direction altogether look the the problems for City we we know what they are I I really wanted to ask you too about this question that’s being asked a lot about City and that the players themselves have talked about which is the fact that it’s an aging Squad I mean all squads are aging in a sense that they’re all getting older every single day but as as Kevin De BR said before the game they’re only six months older than they were when they lifted you know when they were coming towards the end of of last season but what I’m not sure about is how quickly towards the end of your career when a player starts to feel the effect of their age how quickly that can happen can it happen over that 6mon to a year period where you lose just enough and enough players lose just enough that it can have an effect on the team I think I think it’s different with with City Chelsea were warriors deep into their 30s Terry vovi uh uh Lampard balac Czech there was so many Fantastic players in that Squad and their longevity was outstanding arsenal when they won the tight line of anger they were deep into their 30s Defenders were 36 37 I seem to remember um as far as City a concerned I think it’s less the age and more the fact that it might well be they’ve reached the end of the cycle I mean they they number of games I think they’ve made the most changes to their starting 11 but used the second fewest players behind Newcastle there’s only 22 players I think that they’ve used in their squad and that’s lower than anyone by Newcastle with 20 I think which means those players have played an average of 70 plus games this season they’ve had so little break turn around they’ve come back from winning TR at title winning level that’ss will fall off at some point that’s what we happen I don’t think we expected this decline in such a short short space of time to answer your question though I was talking to righty the other week about this as a male player like when does this happen he said sometimes just wake up and you you don’t have that half a yard I mean Benny you can talk about this probably a little bit more but like they just like call Walker’s half a yard’s G and it just happens it’s not something so when you talking about that Chelsea team they probably were quite fortunate that all those players seem to keep their speed of player and their Pace cuz once it’s gone you can’t get it back from my understanding like has always been good 1 V one now what is as well it’s also recovery time because there’s no breaks now in football You’ you’ve got Premier League season Champions League which is now more games you’ve got Internationals now in the summer there’s so much football now that these guys in your mid-30s it’s just the recovery time is hard as well and also when you throw into the mix pep as well and how intense he is in his training sessions I can understand how quickly he can decline because there’s no kind of there’s no give anywhere you can’t go you know what we’ll give you three weeks off you four weeks off it’s just Relentless because take rodri for instance he’s so key for Manchester City he’s so key for Spain where is he supposed to get arrest and he literally can’t and
