what’s up Leafs Nation welcome back to another game preview I’m Zach Phillips and today we’re going to be taking a look at game number 21 of the tronto map Leafs regular season yes just like that a you got some of the young kids up here with the boys you’ve got a three- game winning streak coming into this one there is in a weird way some pressure on this game because you’ve played really well without Matthews you’ve looked really good in the last couple of games defensively your goal tending has looked good you’re all of a sudden getting some contra R butions from other guys in the lineups you’re getting all these like role players stepping up and elevating their games with these guys out grain looks amazing Minton looked good in the first game Alex naner has a level of excitement if you fall flat on your face here on a Sunday night against the Utah Hockey Club in a standalone game in the NHL here tonight it’s going to be like weirdly disappointing and I don’t want to put pressure on the team because it’s not like a must- win or anything like that but it’s like typically this is a Leafs game where in years past we felt like ah well this is the one they dropped this is one they blow it because they’re just like they’re the leavs I I I mean I was looking for a better way to describe it but that’s pretty much the best way to do it they’re the leavs this is where they blow it and they lose the game and we all sit there and we’re like well yeah that’s the Utah Hockey Club the Arizona Coyotes etc etc etc but it feels like this group may have more in them than that and may just not let those kind of things get to them and won’t show up uh in the second period here tonight they’ll be ready to go from the puck drop so I’m kind of hoping that that’s the case here tonight and they can kind of shove it up our uh you know where and say hey we’re not that team we don’t let teams come in here and take advantage of us anymore because we think we’re the big bad Maple Leafs and nothing bad can happen to us like I I don’t know I’m I’m anticipating maybe something a little bit different and again I’m excited about the kids I’m excited about neander uh Alex neander that is jumping up with the big club and playing with his brother no matter what I I think that ultimately that’s a cool story you know Brothers playing on the same team in the National Hockey League it’s incredibly difficult to make it to the NHL in the first part to have brothers make it to the NHL and I know there’s other examples of it but Brothers make it and then play on the same team it’s always going to be cool in my opinion so kind of a nice story there but let’s take a lot look at what lines we’ve got here for tonight as the Leafs do face face off against the Utah Hockey Club and heading on over to our friends at Daily face off pull up that website I mean this is a perfect spot to be going to every time I’m looking for lines goalie confirmations all that kind of stuff making sure to check out daily face off but first line here tonight Bobby McMahon John Taris Mitch Marner I mean no real comments you want my thoughts on that it it’s I like the construction of this I I think that they’ve been playing well and I’m glad they stay together if you disagree let me know in the com comments second line Robertson pontis Holberg William neander um I I don’t know how I feel about this line right now Holberg stepped up in the last game filled the role of the 2C nicely uh he he kind of has had a slow underwhelming start to this season and to have that game where it’s like hey dude you need to get going because Matthews is out DOI is out like we’re missing bodies here we need you to be going we can’t be you can’t be a passenger tonight to have that game last game uh where he steps up he contributes gets on the board it’s like okay maybe he can kind of take that take some pressure off himself and carry it over to the next game kind of looking for that here tonight Nick Robertson on the wing it’s no secret how I feel about this guy I don’t want to take it out on the player either uh my confusion frustration whatever you want to call it is more so with the kid gloves that he’s been treated with here in Tonto maybe it’s from media fan base I don’t know uh where where this is kind of all boiling from but he’s not going to be a top six guy long term when n Patti come back they’re ahead of him McMahon I have him ahead of him because he brings something different he’s told us that he’s a goal scorer everyone around has told us he’s a goal scorer well he’s the only goal scorer who doesn’t score goals you’re going to get a shot in the top six here tonight with a very talented player in William neander you’re going to get more minutes you’re going to get more important ice time and you’re going to get a little bit more uh pressure on you in this role are you going to step up are you going to contribute offensively are you going to make an impact on the game these are the questions I have for him and I hope will be answered here tonight because if he’s a non-factor if this kid is invisible tonight there’s going to be frustrations not just from me but from the fan base of like hey you demanded a trade you get a shot in the top six and what are you doing with it because sometimes an opportunity just happens to pop up how are you going to utilize that like are you going to be able to step up to the moment let’s find out here tonight third line um we transformed the kid line into like grank from grankin Minton and Robertson to grankin Minon and neander with the absence of n here tonight obviously he’s out Alex neander steps in signs that contract one way he will have to clear waivers to get back down to the AHL if they do decide to send him down there but I don’t know uh this one I’m more looking for like electricity I heard on uh overdrive the other day they were calling him the fourth hand the Russian Hansen brother I love that description of it I think it’s amazing and like that’s what he is his interviews are electric his quotes are electric I love this kid Fraser Minon definitely could use a little bit more development maturity but uh I think that he looked good the other night I I don’t think he like wowed me but I wasn’t like ah this guy’s not noo but this one I’m kind of just looking for like let’s have fun let’s have some fun don’t let goals go in the back of the net and we’ll all walk away from this one happy just tidy work let’s get out fourth line Steve Stewart lorence I mean they know their role and if they don’t they probably wouldn’t be playing in the NHL but uh that’s not a scoring line down there that is a create Havoc four check finish every single hit uh that’s the kind of stuff we’re going to be looking for out of that fourth line so as for our lines tonight I’m excited I feel like there could be some fun some energy out of these guys but uh outside of that nothing too crazy nothing too unexpected de pairs uh it’s back to what we have the same every single night for the most part where Morgan Riley’s not playing with Yanni Haw andpa we’re going to get Morgan riy emman Lon I think they’ve been good together I I mean hey Pat myself on the back when I’m right you got to admit when you’re wrong I was worried that that pair was going to be a nightmare has not been has actually been very good uh thus far hopefully that continues here tonight Riley ecan LaRon this second pair predictably mccab and TANF unbelievable defensively but if you’re not actually aware of how unbelievable defensively they are the top pair in the entire NHL with their underlying metrics Box shots and uh expected goals at gains chances L like these guys are at the top of the league in pairings they they just make everything go away chances mistakes doesn’t matter they just shut it down it just it it doesn’t happen it’s not a problem it’s not a thing um they’ve been amazing the third pair there again um Ben wall looks like gets back it again uh for a second game in a row I thought he looked good the other night steps up he knows what his role is there as well and timman seems to found some life and new found confidence under Craig buub so fun watching him develop and transform the game uh from what we saw under Sheldon Keefe where he was a guy who was like in and out in and out to like Bru loves this guy you’ve got a little bit of a leash here a little bit of a Runway let’s see how you’re going to take advantage of it and he’s done real well so far so those are your pairs power play the only change if we just slide down there a little bit is obviously Matthew NIS is out Fraser Minon gets the tap on that first Power Play unit play the net front role as long as he plays it like N I think everyone will be happy so that’s what we’re looking for here tonight for our lineups top to bottom uh as far as things go for the starting goenda wall and net for the maple leafes Vela in nets for the Utah Hockey Club Leafs fans have nightmares about this felica guy for what he did to us when he was in Arizona I know maybe Utah changes a man maybe he doesn’t have that magic anymore I don’t know we’ll find out but that’s your goalie match up that’s your lineup for the Leafs team here tonight it’s time to get to our best bet segment we are effectively net neutral on the season but let’s
