some momentum in Xavier’s case after losing to Yukon in their home opener or in the Big East opener no no shame in losing to the huskys but the huskys are playing right now Marquette looking to extend uh their Big East winning streak uh at um on the road first road test of the season for well first Ro test Big E season for Marquette excuse me they’ve lost their last two Road games Marquette has so there’s a you know some interesting things at play here but big picture of before we dive into both sides what do you the big thing you’re looking at in this game I’m looking for Marquette to establish themsel as either like the if not the clear-cut best team in this league like at the very least the Undisputed top two like them and Yukon towering over everybody else and in order to do that you take out a solid Xavier team on the road I know Xavier has had its struggles they’ve had moments where it they they’ve kind of wondered like are they just sleepwalking are they going to wake up they’ve had some close calls um like the South Carol State game for instance however it looks like they’re starting to figure it out a little bit Ryan Kell has been a monster that dude was completely torching Yukon and you saw Davon mcnight kind of have his Breakout game against highlevel competition this year if you look at some of their some of their the contest they found themselves in earlier this season mcnight had really struggled when the competition ramped up um if you look at his box scores like against Michigan 23 on Kim pom chipped in just three points one for eight from the field against Cincinnati one for three from the field just two points uh and that was in 34 minutes too so seeing him go against the top 25 Kim pump team have the game he did and I thought like reminded folks of of some of that like the paint touch true point guard type of skill set he has if he can build like he needs to build on that but simultaneously Marquette needs to show that like our our defense is legit we’re going to take these two guards out of the game we’re going to cut off the head of the state the snake for this Xavier team uh and remind everybody or show everybody that the the hot start the big wins that those aren’t a fluke yeah marquette’s top 20 nationally in both offense and defense on Ken palom very few teams can say they are as well balanced as Marquette is from the Xavier standpoint no Zack freem manle which I think would have been helpful against Yukon having a kind exactal would be helpful but this Marquette team is not one that has dominant big or traditional big in that matter Ben gold does more of his damage on the perimeter in face up game anyway so I don’t know if that’s going to be as big of an issue my concern with Xavier in this game is their perimeter defense which is quite bad going up against cam Jones who might be the best guard in the country yeah I I would okay yeah we’ll I’ll get into like a case for Xavier in a second but I I’m with you on this is even seeing like Stevie Mitchell at the time of recording their game against Butler isn’t over yet they’re up eight with eight minutes left Stephen Mitchell is having a nice bounce back game compared to really the stinker he laid against Dayton it’s like those two guards it’s not that is the they’re the heart and soul of this Marquette team I mean cam Jones does everything for them from a running the offense from scoring and taking over uh to forcing a ton of steals on his own on the defense I think stepen Mitchell is a great running running mate next to him who can create a little bit for himself not a not doesn’t take a ton of Threes but knocks him down when he’s open um I mean he get gets gets to the free throw line as well so like both those dudes you have a it’s just such a dynamic combination because I mean Mitchell’s always looking to get downhill he’s GNA get to the Cherry stripe Jones can sort of do it all instead of the rest of his teammates and if you don’t have someone on your team that can at least slow one of them down it can make for a pretty long night it can it can well let’s get into that case for Xavier you said you wanted to make why do you want to make the case uh so yeah the where I think Xavier could take advantage if it can defy some of that pressure that Marquette is going to put on them if they take care of the basketball which they have like historically under Shawn Miller’s tenure they’ve been one of the best assist like assisting teams in the country best passing teams in the country so to say like they get like a ton of their field goals um come off of assists that’s bit a metric that they’ve dominated really since Shawn Miller came back so if they’re they’re able to protect the ball they’re able to whether the storm whether it’s Mitchell or Jones who’s putting pressure on them I like their potential to get into the paint I mean we saw that’s exactly what Dayton did against this Marquette team Enoch cheeks he had a huge game against them didn’t hit a three-pointer but shot Seven for 12 from from inside the arc like that’s to me I think that is the formula here um Dayton shot 60% as a team inside the arc against Marquette and that wasn’t like they got a dominant Zed key game I mean he gave him 15 but it wasn’t like he was it never felt like zedi was the best player on the court that game it was really more guard dominated by Dayton um and they were able to pressure the rim which sort of opened things up for for everybody else so um that that to me is the the formula that if Xavier wants to BL off the upset it’s going to have to follow and then additionally it’s going to have to like they could do this in a way that Dayton couldn’t I mean Xavier’s the has the seventh highest three-point percentage in the country if you get those guards like if if Conwell or mcnight able to collapse the defense they got Shooters around them who are going to who are going to I mean who can put some pressure on on Marquette I think there is a decent amount on the line for Marquette in this game from a perception standpoint if they lose this game they will have lost three their last five games those would have all been on the road and you know on the surface losing at Iowa State not a huge deal Iowa State’s awesome lose on the road to Dayton again not necessarily a huge deal Dayton’s a very good team you it was like their Super Bowl that you went to UD Arena and played there and Dayton fans may get mad at me for for saying that but it was it was an event it was a big deal that Dayton was hosting a top 10 Marquette team right that’s big deal that’s fine but then to lose at Xavier without our one of their best players in Zach freem mantle I think then you start looking at everything through a different lens I don’t know if that if you should or not because everything you mentioned was aier like is accurate but I think that’s the way it would be it would be perceived yeah I I think it’s definitely something where you want to see them silence whatever critiques they could still have because for the most part I would say no one is really knocking Marquette too much for losing at Dayton or at aowa State the the point is exactly what you make those places are exceptionally hard to hard to win at but I don’t know I’m just thinking like from a standpoint if you want to be a one two or even a three sieg you got to start stacking some Road WIS I feel like that is something the committee has started to value a ton is like are you able to get those q1 wins on the road in particular that seem to carry an extra weight and if you’re Marquette like and you’re seeing how the season started you’re you’re thinking about like how high can this team climb like anything less than a three seat at this point would probably be a disappointment and yeah I I think you want to see like there’s significantly better I think they’re better Coach than than Xavier I think they have a talent Advantage I think they have better positional size I think they know who they are at this point when it comes to being a high-pressure defensive minded team who lets your two guards cook um they’re getting great prod production from their wings as well whether it’s Chase Ross or the two freshman who were like completely unheralded who were fitting in seamlessly like everything is stacking up for Marquette like they should win this game it’s just at the same time like you mentioned they got to get the the monkey off their back with with getting a road game this season against the quality opponent this was now I’m you know just going total Vibes but this was the this was the point last season where last SE where people stopped believing in their like final four potential last season nonconference nonconference you had a loss to Purdue three points on a neutral Court I think that was Maui right in the championship like well okay that’s understandable particularly with what Purdue went on to do last season and then you come back from Maui and lose at Wisconsin Roby game call center stelf to play Wisconsin solid understandable right get all that then you get a conference play you open with a loss to a very mid- Providence team mhm win a couple games when you lose to the N Champions seen Hall Pirates and then you lose to Butler at home like you went two and three to start Big E play and then they they ripped off wins rest of the season I think they lost to Yukon twice kraton or Yukon three times kraton and and then sweet 16 but college basketball at large did not take them seriously as I final fourth threat because of the stretch right well cam how do you have Cam Jones on your roster with Tyler coock and you lose to DJ Burns sorry you got me sidetracked the came out last year like how did this their season ended prematurely when they had a way more talented team but like you said people started doubting them around this time last year and those doubts proved not to be that those doubts were not unfounded right and it’s I think if Marquette God I hate I hate doing this Marquette fans I’m sorry but I think if Marquette wants to be like taken seriously in this very top tier in college basketball which I think like this team has a talent to be at the program is good enough to be at you have to break through at some point yeah I’m with you given what’s on the schedule the Breakthrough is not having the slip upset you’ve had the past couple of years right at this time winning at Xavier is a great way to get things started because this is a Xavier team that can beat you but it’s also has a lot of weakness as you can exploit Ken palom has Marquette winning this game by four there are not official lines out on this yet so we’re Conwell should give them good production maybe mcnight and Foster continue to I mean Foster shot lights out against Yukon maybe he can do a little bit something like that again I just struggle seeing all three of those guards being in Rhythm against this Marquette defense particularly on the perimeter even even in their their home arena I think John hugley is a big time downgrade from Zack freemantle even if like even if marquette’s not going to really go to Ben gold you’re telling me that you want John hugley protecting the rim when Stevie Mitchell is getting downhill I don’t think so um yeah I just I think Marquette gets it done and maybe even gets it done big I probably would lean more of winning by like 8 to 10 I think this game could be close for a little bit but marquette’s got the advantage I think just about everywhere on the court you’re not going to keep those guards down for for too too long I think Marquette wins by double digits you probably right on 10 or 11 or so that’s that’s what it feels like to me but we you know we’ll see this is again a spot where conference play Road games really hard to win really hard to win so we will see what happens no matter
