another chance for Maryland to pick up a a win against a notable name you know they’ve really propped themselves up the TPS have this season with close losses to Marquette and then at Purdue but their best wins are over Villanova and Ohio State teams that are Villanova is Villanova Ohio State’s kind of falling apart Syracuse has not been good this season they want to put a feather in their cap too they’re five and five they’re trying to avoid falling below 500 uh for the first time and what feels like like a while they have not beaten a kenpom top 100 team this season Cornell is the only top 200 team they have beaten Maryland much higher number 16 as of this recording Connor is looking at this game big picture what’s the the biggest thing you’re looking for that stands out man I think the the most intriguing part of this game for me is just it’s the battle of the two front courts it’s the Eddie lamin versus Julian Ree and Derek queen battle um because I do think that if if Syracuse wants to have any chance at beating Maryland uh they need to win that battle like not maybe not win win’s win’s a strong word when it comes to the the match up between lamin and those two but they at least need it to be look like not an absolute mismatch and not I’m not just talking like both teams are really good defensive rebounding teams um Maryland with their side down low is better on the offensive glass but also like two-point defense for Syracuse uh preventing bigs from getting whatever they want for syrac like that’s been an issue this season uh and you’re going up against one of the best and most efficient scoring Duos in the front Court in the country and to me that’s like forget forget the advant ages you may or may not have on the perimeter if you’re Syracuse um forget about you know your ability to play turnover free offense um if you’re not able to slow down that de like you just don’t have a chance in this game I did a Ralph report that is on the sleepers media YouTube channel on Derek Queen the numbers he’s putting up right now from a a usage standpoint a minutes played you know points production all that stuff the only guys who are matching that nationally are Ryan caul Brer and Janai broom his top comp one of his top comps Janai broom last year he is I I don’t think it’s being talked about enough nationally how well he is playing in comparison to other Bigs like he is already one of the best bigs in the entire country and so you put him up against the front line as you mentioned that struggles defending the paint I think that could be could be a problem Syracuse’s back cour also been in issue since JJ Starling went down they weren’t you know great beforehand but they’ve had a hard time replacing that production Maryland has I think been much better the last seven games or so yeah seven games since Rodney and rice entered the starting lineup they took Deshawn Harris Smith out um finally kind of not gave up on that but realized he was not the offensive score that they needed in the starting lineup uh and since rice came in we’ve seen this team go to another level offensively I think they could continue against Syracuse because Syracuse they’re not great defensively in the paint not great defensively in the perimeter either they’re they’re kind of overall overall uh lackluster one thing I’m interested to see is that Maryland Maryland’s defense puts pressure on likes to force turnovers they jumped on Ohio State early because of how many turnovers they forced early in that game this will be a good test for Syracuse’s back court to handle that and see and see what they can do but I would expect R have an advantage just about every possession yeah I mean and it’s also the fact that you’ve got you’ve got the two like Derek Queen has been unbelievable and I and I don’t think that should take away from the like the the comp for Julian ree is like VCU maros Santos Silva like it’s just he’s blocking shots he’s Gathering rebounds at it even better rate than Queen is he’s he’s also shooting 63% 62% from the floor uh and oh by the way you surround those with three guys who shoot like Rodney rice is the worst three-point shooter in that starting lineup in the backourt at 38% like this is a this is a team that they all shoot well around the rim their back court can shoot well from Deep um and like the only the only only thing that that leaves you uh you know a little bit confounded is that like they don’t they don’t get they don’t get fouled a ton yeah which like like I feel like if they got fouled more they you look at their adjusted offensive efficiency is only 32 in the in the country but when you watch them on the floor it looks much better than that and then you look and you’re like okay but they’re not getting the most efficient shot in basketball at the same rate as some of the other other like top offenses yeah I I think that has to do with more the perimeter orientedness of what they want to do like on the perimeter the guys aren’t attacking the basket at a high rate they’re they’re throwing it in the post kicking it back out so you’re not getting the the hacks they also try and avoid sending Julian Reese to the foul line which talk about being the most efficient shot in basketball that is not one of the most efficient shot shots in basketball he when he goes to the fou line no no no it’s it’s not but like they’ve got a 95 % three point or free throw shooter they’ve got a 83 so I mean even Derek Queen is almost at 80 but no you’re right I mean like I understand why it’s happening it’s just like you you look at the numbers you’re like okay they’re 32nd but then you watch them on the floor and you’re like okay this is this is better than a this is a this is better than a top 30 offensive team in the country right now so can Maryland compete in the Big 10 for the Big 10 title I mean I think anyone at this point who is the who is the Big 10 like big I think they’re in that that tier I would be okay putting them in that tier I think they’re in that tier and you look like the is the favorite right now UCLA I think so I mean like in there Illinois in there Maryland I feel like Maryland is like the quintessential mismatch of mismatches for UCLA because so yeah I think they should be in that conversation because I think this is the most wide open the big 10 has been in in a few years and Maryland’s looking like a a team they have the bigs to compete in in Big 12 or Big 10 officiated games and they they have the back court that can can support you know they can flamethrower deep which is something that Purdue used with around Ed last year for to a lot of success so yeah no I think that they’re like if you’re looking at if you’re looking at the team that most resembles Purdue from last year just from like a roster makeup and what they put on the floor this this Maryland team is that team yeah well we we do not have an official spread yet but we want to lost to Georgetown yeah I I think they could keep it close with Starling but without Starling I’m taking Maryland win this game by 15 yeah yeah I mean that’s like my initial read even even if they had Starling was Maryland by like 10 to 12 um so I’ll take I I mean I’m I’ll go in the same direction I think it’ll be like a I think there is a there is a better chance that this game gets pushed to 20 than this game is single digits I’ll just at that well we’ll be back on the recap probably recapping a Syracuse upset Victory because that’s how these that’s how these things tend to go we’re both
