we learned last night of another veteran left-hander Matthew Boyd who made all of eight eight regular season starts last year lands a 2-year $29 million deal with the Cubs it’s a contract worth upwards of $30 million with some bonus language thrown in he was really good in the postseason I’m quite sure the Cubs were paying attention uh again short body of work during the regular season only eight starts but all together including a dominant postseason a two and two record and er just over two and a guy that’s going to slot right in near the top of the rotation at Wrigley you same thing could be said about Matt I mean he’s figured out how to pitch as he’s gotten older he’s a lot more crafty you know you always get the crafty left-hander yeah you saw it a lot this year H and there’s some people you’re really happy for you know there was a time in Detroit when he should have been traded they didn’t trade him and then he had to battle through a lot of different stuff he ends up in Cleveland and just what he does off the field the type of person that he is I love this guy I love his family and his wife they do so many great charity things but it’s straight out of their heart he was doing stuff before he was making money you know so I’m happy for him and on the baseball front he’s figured it out man I mean he threw the ball excellent down the stretch so we could we could have the same kind of discussion around Boyd and where he slots into the Cubs rotation that we did for we got that full screen we got that full screen built of what the Cubs rotation might look like with this Edition Justin steel at the top in managa after his great debut season in 2024 tyion and Assad and then Matthew Boyd with a couple of other names vying for spots they like the lefties huh they like the lefties yeah here’s here’s my takeaway from both of these two signings and when we talk about how the Mets struck gold with the three guys that they signed to short deals last year right there is a path to be good with a bunch of these go out and identify guys in the middle of their careers sign him on short you know lowrisk deals maybe the aav is a little bit higher but you’re not paying a guy for four or five years who’s in his late 20s early 30s and it and you could strike gold and um max came up with a great board a great find of a staff that was built almost exclusively of this kind of deal remember the 2021 Giants they won the NL West they won 107 games that year Kevin Gosman took the qualifying offer so you could put an asterisk next to his name d gani Sanchez and wood all signed one-year deals very Club friendly money and they really produced now again filling out a whole staff of these guys is hard to do and and this is an outlier of a season but the Giants struck gold in 2021 and I think there’s a cautionary tale there there’s a lesson for teams and I know they’re aware of it every team has a pitching department now they’re trying to identify guys in the market that they can bring in in a contract like that and then make better with their proprietary Intel and I think that’s what we saw with the Cubs and Mets in these deals well this is how you use your front office look we’ve got so many front offices that are now about the analytics about the data but this is where they make their money you know go out and and be able to make a deal with a guy that makes sense don’t tell me during the season his swing rate is bad duh you figure that out we can see that but making a shrewd move in the winter saying this is how I project a guy out to be and we can go ahead and get that player and get him there that’s what you pay the money for for the front offices to have all the analytics right you know so I I think this is and we’re seeing a trend that teams are we’re in a copycat League we always have been this is the newest copycat we’re going to get these pictures two-year deal opt outs if they want it and then they’re gone down the road we’ve been seeing it for a while but now we’re seeing them locked pictures up yeah
