Major League Baseball news the New York Yankees lost a slugger but sign an ace Max freed in 8year $218 million deal freed who turns 31 in mid January has an erra of 2.81 over the past five seasons which is the best in all of Major League Baseball over that span we welcome Jeff passing in live from Dallas where the winter meetings continue so you lose SoDo this isn’t necess this isn’t a plan b as it relates obviously to your lineup but you get another Ace to add to your rotation and I’m interested in how the deal came together Jeff it came together pretty quickly Scott and look when you have a player of Juan sto’s caliber and you lose out on that bidding process you’d better have a plan B a plan C A Plan D all ready to execute and the Yankees looked at Max freed as the top talent out on the market aside from Juan stto now you can look at their rotation they’ve got Garrick Cole they’ve got Nester Cortez they’ve got Luis heel they go like seven starting pitchers deep now and there’s the opportunity to potentially trade a starter to go out and get another bat they’ve been looking at Cody Bellinger potentially there all kinds of things that they can do but mainly this comes down to a simple fact when you lose one of the best players in baseball you’d better replace him with someone who if not the same caliber is an elite player as well and that’s what Max freed is he’s not going to blow you away with his fast ball but the curveball and the slider he’s got wonderful Exquisite command and the numbers are what they are that 2.1 81 erra that you referenced the best in baseball just ahead of Corbin Burns who himself is still a free agent and I’m not the smartest guy Jeff but if the other team score zero runs all you need is one to win so I mean you can pitching pitching is a big part of the equation we understand that all right so freed a massive name that is now off the market to New York in terms of other dominoes that are likely to fall you mentioned Burns he certainly would be coveted by many what other names are we looking at we’re looking at Corbin Burns we’re looking at Alex bregman you know we’re looking at Pete Alonzo maybe not at this point but eventually Christian Walker is a guy uh I mean there are a lot of good free agents who are still out there at this point but this is a meetings a winner meetings that has gotten off to a pretty busy start getting sto down getting free down and and I think it’s really a question at this point of what teams are left that have money and how much are those guys in the top tier going to get bregman is a perfect example the Boston Red Sox would like to have Alex bregman the Houston Astros want to resign him the Detroit Tigers are going to be in the mix as well and then of course the Yankees are going to be there lurking too and what bregman has done throughout his career yes he was on the 2017 Astros but the reality is he has produced consistently throughout his career and a lot of teams out there would like to have him in their lineup and in their Clubhouse so you mentioned a number of teams Jeff if you’re kind of zeroing in on one that you think this might be a team that that that really goes all in pushes their chips in the middle for someone you just mentioned who’s that team I’m not sure Scott if the Boston Red Sox are going to go all in but I think they kind of have to at this point because this is an organization that remember won four World Series over a 15-year period And yet over the last five years they finished in last place three times and have made the playoffs only once they were trying to get Juan stto whiffed they were trying to get Max freed whiffed they were trying to get Nathan evaldi whiffed and went to Texas for three years and $75 million and look the Red Sox have money they have the opportunity to go out there and get guys and whether it’s bregman or Corbin Burns they need to do it because the core that they have right now and the farm system with Christian Campbell and Roman Anthony and Marcel Meyer and Kyle teal is one of the best in baseball and if the Red Sox play this correctly they’ve got the opportunity to turn this team over the next 5 years into something really special but they got to start winning Scott and they haven’t won either in free agency or on the the field in a long time Jeff passon appreciate the time look forward to talking again soon be well always a pleasure Scott thanks [Music]
