New York Yankees we’ll take a look back at his Braves career why the Braves were never really in on Max freed Nathan avaldi off the board as well a lot happening on day two at the winter meetings we’ll get into all of that on today’s episode and you can get into the action with NFL on FanDuel new customers can place a $5 bet and you’ll get started with $150 in bonus bets if you win your first $5 bet v the fanduel.com to get started well unfortunately for us brace fans we have to get started talking about Max freed no longer being in Atlanta Braves as he is now will be with the New York Yankees he signed an eight-year $218 million deal with the New York Yankees now it willb trade rumors they projected him to get six years 156 I thought seven would be the max that maybe if that was needed to be the extra year to go to get a deal done that maybe some team would go seven years on him part of the reason why the Yankees win eight years though is because it’s $ 27.25 million aav on the deal where you know Max could have gotten 30 30 plus million a year over five six year deal seveny year deal even but they stretch it out to eight years to kind of bring that aav down a little bit which does is what goes against the luxury tax but still that’s just an incredibly long deal for Max freed and I mentioned the MLB trade rumors projections that’s before we saw what all these other pitchers were getting and we’ve been talking about it for a while now as we’ve seen some of these other deals go down that Max free was going to get 200 million and he got that and more from the Yankees this is the largest contract ever for a left-handed free agent pitcher it’s just crazy to think about NY fourth largest contract ever handed out for a pitcher in general we are talking about Max freed here and I love Max freed I am I’m not going to try to sight Max freed at all in this podcast it’s just when I think about largest contract ever for a pitcher I would not have guessed that Max freed would be one of those because of where he is I mean he’s going into his 30s but again it’s just it’s this market and maybe this is a long longer conversation I don’t want to get off on focusing on Max freed here but clearly teams last year were afraid to spend maybe a lot of it had to do with the TV contract situation now that it seems that there is more clarity in that teams are just spining like crazy this off season um which is I think a good thing for baseball somebody had asked me that why is it a good thing for baseball if teams are investing money like that that means that they’re making money and are able to spend like that so it’s a good thing for baseball overall but hate it for the Braves because they’re not getting these top free agents and they just don’t go after the top free agents that’s not how Alex likes to spend his money and Alex does spend money but he spends it locking up the young guys but getting back into max freed uh this pric is also probably inflated a little bit because the Yankees missed out on one sto they had all this money burning a hole in their pocket they had to go out and do something and they go out and sign Max freed full no trade clause no deferrals in this and no opt outs either for Max freed it’s just eight years 218 million 27.25 million a year for Max freed so great deal for him now the Braves were never in it just playing and simple the Braves were never going to come close to what the Yankees ended up offering him um I would I would love to know exactly what the Braves offered him if they made any offers we know that they at least had conversations about extensions while he was with the Braves but I don’t know if it ever got to point and we’ll never know the Braves keep all that a very you know tight lid over there but I would love to know how close they would have actually come to signing a Max re my guess is probably five years you know 150 something like that uh I don’t think I don’t think the Braves were were ever going to go much more than five years on Max freed and even that was pushing it pushing it for Alex andas but I think they do like Max freed and L is going to his 30s he’s had some injury concerns I I don’t worry about Max Freed’s performance long term I do somewhat worry about the injuries that he’s had especially the forarm injuries that he’s had here is lately but I I’ve said it for a while now I think Max Fred is going to be a good pitcher for a long time I said the same thing about Freddy Freeman I think Freddy Freeman will be a productive player for a long time his skill set just tends to lead you towards that conclusion I think it’s the same for Max freed who doesn’t rely on power he relies on his stuff yes but more so just keeping hitters off balance getting weak contact and that’s going to play even into its mid to late 30s so I think Max freed Will Be an Effective pitcher for most of this deal but the injuries are are a real thing that’s a lot of money to give to a guy who is going to be pitching in the back half of his career he’s never made more than 30 starts in a season or pitched more than 190 innings in a season as BR fans we all know and understand the risk with Max fre and all pitchers are ultimately a huge risk but it’s a guy that seems like he goes on the L at least or on the I at least once or twice a year and again the forearm injuries and he’s come back from those forearm injuries and pitched well after that but still those are a bit scary to me so again the braids were never going to come close to this they were never going to give that many years and that much money to a guy who has had some of the injury scares like he has a guy that hasn’t been able to you know to make 30 more than 30 starts a year and going into his his 30s is just it’s not a deal that Alex was ever going to to do but Max freed is a great pitcher a 3.07 career erra a 1.16 whip in almost 900 Innings I would have love to have Max freed don’t get me wrong not my money I’d have given him whatever he wanted to bring him back because I love Max freed I love the competitor and obviously he’s a really good pitcher the numbers I just gave you uh he’s guy that’s you know finished in the top five of the the sa young vote twice in his career he has that type of stuff when he is healthy and when he is out there he is one of the best pitchers in the game and the Yankees paid him like that they paid him to be one of the best pitchers in the game the one thing I’ll say Embrace fans know this as well he’s up and down in the postseason a 5.10 erra in the postseason with a 1.59 whip in 67 Innings certainly his style of pitching it’s not the more dominant type of pitching it’s not blow it by you type of stuff so that can sometimes lead to some big Innings like we saw you know in San Diego this past year against the Padres it’s you know a couple of little things here or there breaks don’t go your way you get into a long inning you get tired you make a mistake and next thing you know is a four spot on the board and those things see tend to speed up on you and happen more often in the postseason but we’ve also seen him pitch brilliantly in the postseason so again that is the one area you look at in Freed’s career where he just he hasn’t been great is in the postseason he has had some ups and downs there he’s had some great starts and he’s had some Clunkers certainly in the postseason but he is a true competitor you know that about Max freed as well as I do he is one of the best competitors out there uh and I believe that and you see that again from a guy like Max Fred Max freed I would love to have him on my team and I wish he could have remained a brave but it just wasn’t going to happen um now when you look at Max freed and look at your your favorite memories for Max freed and I asked some of you what were your favorite memories of Max free there are two to me that immediately come to mind and I’m GNA tell you what two memor memories those are here next get ready to tackle the NFL action with fuel America’s number one sports book right now new customers can bet $5 and get 150 in bonus their World Series odds for 2025 they now have the Yankees and the Braves tied with the second best odds at plus 800 with the Mets the fourth best odds at plus 900 00 obviously the Dodgers are heavy making locked on Braves your first listen of the day go check out lockon MLB for your second listen so breaking down everything happening around Major League Baseball and there is a lot happening around major league baseball right now Max freed wasn’t the only news and we’ll get into more of that on today’s episode but I asked you what were your best memories of Max freed and there are two that distinctly come to mind for me right away first one game six of the world series I mean getting his ankle stepped on seeing that fire in him like I talked about earlier that competitive side of Max freed and I say this all the time you could have left him out there for 50 Innings and I don’t think he was giv up a run to the Astros that night just from that first Inning on he was completely locked in and had those Astros hitters just looking foolish that is probably my best and lasting memory of Max freed is that game six of the World Series Clincher my other one is actually him at the plate maybe some of you remember this I haven’t gone through the comments here yet but for me it was a walk-off hit against the Marlins on July 4th I don’t know why it just just a cool moment obviously seeing a a pitcher come in to pinch hit and walkoff a game but it’s just one of those moments I remember where I was I you know remember the the feeling I remember the excitement what the walk-off hit that he had against the Marlins is probably my second favorite memory of Max freed who just in general for me kind of kicks off the rebuild too that trade with the Padres taking a chance on a guy who was rehabbing coming back and he ends up being the centerpiece of a team that ultimately wins the World Series for the Braves so again great career for Max fre daa says for me it was the trade I remember for the rest of my life I was so upset when we traded Justin Upton because I loved watching him I was like who is this freed guy and Max turned into one of my favorite players uh Kathy G says the walk-off so there’s another one for the walk-off Nate pitchit walk-off single and Extras so many people were on board with Me Kate Harrington as well the July 4th 10th inning walk-off against the Marlins Cory him sliding head first in the home plate a lot of pitchers pitchers man get rid of the DH go back to it right that’s what nobody says but um annoying brace fan says end of the bottom of the first game six of 2021 Jerry Temple pinch hit walk-off single uh so everybody had the same answers as me but uh the either the game six of the World Series or the walk-off hit that he had Benjamin Walter talk about the walk-off hit as well Adam Cruz says easily his psychotic zero reaction to solar’s moonshot job wasn’t done and that’s what I mean that game six for Max freed he was just in a zone that game and he was not going to allow anything so thank you for sending in some of your memories even though they were the exact same two that I had but for me those are those are the two those are when I think of Max freed I didn’t even have to look it up I didn’t even read your comments first those were just automatically the two memories that came to my mind for Max freed and we we wish Max the best to me this is not the same thing as Freddy or or Dansby leaving we all knew Max was gone you could see it in his emotions at the end of the season he knew he was gone it’s just the business of it you know they had had talks of extension so he knew where the Braves were and he knew how good he is he knew he was going to get more than what the Braves were offering so you could see it he was done I don’t think he necessarily wanted to be I think he would like to still be a brave but again it’s just the business of the game and he was never going to take the home town and not that he’s from Atlanta he’s never going to take the Team friendly discount you know he was going to go to free agency and he was going to get the most money and he deserves that he gave a lot of good years to the Atlanta Braves I’m just glad he’s not in the National League glad he didn’t go to the Phillies or the Mets or you know you the Dodgers he went to the Yankees certainly not great to see him in that those pin stripes but uh could be a lot worse certainly not too upset about about that and him not being in the National League and not having to face him all the time but wish Max all the best hate that he’s not here with us now there were some other moves happening on the day and I think the first other one the other big one we have to talk about is Nathan avaldi who signs with the Rangers for three years $75 million I said this the other day with the deals for Frankie montos the deal for Luis srino and some of these other free agent pitcher signings that we’ve seen that it it was looking more and more like Nathan naldi was going to get get 25 million now he was predicted to get 22 million which like I said that’s probably the top end for me of what I’d be willing to give a Nathan naldi who I view as what Charlie Morton was three or four years ago a guy that when he’s on he can look like one of the best pitchers in baseball and when he’s not it’s frustrating to watch and that to me is Nathan avaldi and that to me is who Charlie Morton was three or four years ago now Charlie Morton now can still do that but it’s obviously a lot more of the that we’ve gotten from Charlie Morton or it’s more 50-50 I guess you should say so for me to give 25 million a year to a guy like Nathan avaldi who’s 35 who looks to kind of be give you that same sort of headache that Charlie Morton does where he can look just unbelievable one game and look terrible the next threee 75 million I mean it’s not awful in this market All Things Considered but it’s obviously too much for the Braves to pay so that’s another name off the board and a name that the Braves were mentioned with a lot of times and who a lot of people thought thought the braids might go out and get but 25 million a year for Nathan naldi for three years again that’s just this market and as I said earlier teams are are itching to spend money they didn’t spend a lot of money last off season they are spinning big this offseason and the Rangers bring back Nathan avaldi for three years 75 million so now it’s Corin burns out there and Jack flarity which I know somebody asked about in the chat again with these prices I I just don’t see I don’t see the Braves getting involved with certainly not Burns and I don’t think Jack flarity I think Jack flarity might get a bigger deal than many had anticipated coming off a bounceback season for him after you know pretty much being a non-factor for several years so I don’t think the braids are getting any of those guys I I don’t know what the braids are going to do at this point obviously I think they’re going to do something but I I don’t think it’s going to be in the free agent Market because these prices are just ridiculously high now trade market is starting to take shape Mark finson sent out a a post or a tweet on uh Tuesday morning that had everybody talking as the Angels were rumored to be moving an outfielder we never saw more on that but it had everybody frantically wondering are the Braves who have worked with the angels in the past are they going after a Taylor Ward and it wasn’t specifically mentioned that Ward is the one in the deal but you know would they take a shot on a Joe Adele certainly won’t be Mike Trout I posted that and some people took that seriously I am not a breaking news guy most often have every now and then but certainly would not be breaking something like that um but again we haven’t heard exactly what that is but it sounds like the Angels could be moving an outfielder now Mark Bowman and and David O’Brien both said that it’s not Taylor Ward to the Braves now they mentioned Taylor Ward specifically again it could be somebody else it might not be Taylor Ward that is that is the one being traded um but we’ll see who that is and again the trade market just picking up in general I think is good for the braids I think that’s where it’s going to be maybe they go to the Astros the Astros are apparently listening on Kyle Tucker and framber Valdez obviously Tucker would make a lot of sense for the Atlanta Braves needing a left-handed Outfield bat that would be a pretty huge one to get obviously don’t know what the asking price is or how motivated the Astros really are to moving him when they’re trying to compete next year it’s been reported that the Yankees and Cubs are teams that are showing a lot of interest in a Kyle Tucker how how willing would he be to sign an extension in Atlanta obviously would love to have him that would be I mean that would be a massive move as upset as brav fans have been this offseason with a lack of moves you go out and get a Kyle Tucker you know Braves are going to move move move up in a lot of people’s eyes although they’re already they’re already thought well of in terms of fangraph projected wins and fanduel’s World Series odds Braves are already considered a good team by most out there I know it doesn’t feel like that right now as a Braves fans with everybody else making moves but you go and get a Kyle Tucker and it really boost your chances for next year whether you can get an extension deal done with him or not but again don’t know how likely that is don’t know what the price would be but certainly he would make a lot of since Cubs looking to trade seya Zuki he has a full no trade so he’d have to approve any trade that he’s involved in he doesn’t want to be a DH and he’s not great in the Outfield he’s been a three to four- win player but that’s mostly because he’s had bad defensive ratings on fan grafts if he weren’t so bad defensively he’d probably be more of a a four- win player rather easily he’s made he’s 30 he’s making 19 million the next two years so that’s not exactly cheap but he’s coming off back toback really solid Seasons I like seya zuzuki I think that would be another really good bat stick him in in left field uh so again if he is available don’t know what the price would be and again it’s not exactly cheap it’s 19 million a year for the next two years but I do like the bat over an 800 Ops the last two seasons would be a very good bat for the Atlanta Braves if they’re able to get him twins potentially could move Carlos kareah lot of brace fans out there talking about Carlos kareah let let me bear with me real quickly because I didn’t pull this up beforehand let me go check out the Carlos kah contract because from my memory this is a awful contract uh Carlos kareah going into his age 30 season 3.7 War last year according to baseball reference what I’m looking at now Carlos Korea is set to make over 37 million in 2025 and then it goes down to 32.8 31.8 31.3 and then team options for four more years that continue to decline I just can’t see the Braves doing that again I cannot see the Braves trading for a guy who’s going into their 30s making over 30 million a year and not to mention the injury history for Carlos Korea and why so many teams backed out of signing him in the first place is he a good player yes would he be a Difference Maker for the Braves yes I just it’s hard for me to see the Braves doing that he had a 905 Ops I didn’t realize he was that good last year for the twins but again he played an 86 games he hasn’t played in more than 150 games since 2016 in the last three seasons he’s played 136 135 and 86 games it’s just are you really willing to take on an injury risk like that Who’s Making Over 30 million a year going into their age3 season I just don’t think it’s a good idea you also got the Cardinals trying to move Nolan arado possibly Goldie as well as they’re looking to shed some salary Marlins getting calls on Jesus lazardo we’ve talked about him again an armed that I like left-and side again don’t know how likely it is for those two teams to hook up on a trade and then it sounds like the Mets and Yankees might be in for another battle but this time for Garrett crochet as they are linked to him as well and crochet most likely to get moved this off season a lot of teams showing interest in AJ Mentor as well look good for him and if teams are showing interest in him then he is not coming back to the Atlanta Braves in my mind the only way he comes back to the Braves if is he wanted to reset his market after an injury filled season and try for agency again but if there are teams showing a lot of interest in him and he’s getting a multi-year deal you know 10 million a year or something like I don’t know exactly what he’s getting offered but he’s not coming back to the Braves but good for AJ Menor I hope he is getting a lot of interest I hope he gets a chance to close somewhere know that hasn’t gone well in Atlanta but uh you know same for Max as with AJ Mentor I wish him all the best he gave the Braves a lot of good years and glad to see him getting some interest now there were several other moves happening on a busy Tuesday at the winter meetings we’ll get into the rest of those moves here next I mention the trade market heating up there actually was a pretty big trade that happened on Tuesday as well the Blue Jays traded for Andre simz and Nick sandin from the guardian for Spencer Horwitz and Nick Mitchell so an interesting trade there the Guardians always looking to get younger looking to get cheaper and that’s what they did in this trade getting a couple of good young players and Horwitz and Mitchell and the Blue Jays getting some pieces to help them win now he I talked about yesterday I don’t know what the Blue Jays are are doing they have this very short window that is 2025 basically to try and win and yet you got the Yankees who are out here spending money the Red Sox are are trying they were in on Max freed and and Juan soda they’re trying to spend money and get better the Orioles are a really good team I don’t know what the Blue Jays plans are they want to win nobody wants to sign there they went hard after uh showy Otani last year they went after woto this year but they’re just not able to get that big free agent so they’re gonna have to go out and make some trades to try to upgrade their team so they’re an interesting one to watch this offseason they also went out and signed yimy Garcia to a two-year 15 million dollar deal to help out their Bullpen so the Blue Jays trying to make some moves trying to to compete next year they’re a team like I said we could get into the season and maybe Bo bichette’s not available now but he could very well be available at the trade deadline and maybe the Braves make a move at that point Rocky signed thyro Estrada to a one-year $4 million deal with a 2026 Mutual option had some people reach out to me about Estrada a possible fit for the Braves at shortstop I don’t see him as a short stop at Best he would have been a backup infielder that the Braves could have used but I think that’s why they went out and got Nick Allen so he signs a deal with the Rockies try to reestablish himself the Twin Side wascar Noah to a minor league deal apparently according to Justin Tuscana the Braves tried to get him on a minor league deal and he rejected that and it’s going to Minnesota wish him the best twins do a pretty good job developing pitching as well hopefully they get him on track be interested to see what they give him a shot as whether they try him as a starter or as a reliever and if that was the conversation between the Braves and the Noah if the Braves were saying hey we want you to we want you to stick around on a minor league deal we want to try you as a reliever and he wants to be a starter I don’t know um I’ve said for a while I think wascar NOA needs to be a reliever and I think that’s where he can have his best role at the big league level first thing is he’s got to get healthy but once healthy I think an knowah can be a really good reliever so again that’ll be interesting to watch with the twins what what do they do with him do they give him another chance to start or do they try to make him a reliever the White Sox signed Mike talkman to a one-year deal worth 1.95 million with an extra 1 million in incentives look I’m not upset I kind of joked about this on social media I’m not upset that the Braves didn’t get Mike tochman because I get it it’s a one Tool uh he can he can get on base but I do like that tool very well as somebody who could fill in until Ronald is back would be a nice bat Off the Bench and a guy that can get on base and again it’s $2 million it’s not like you’re paying a lot of money so um you know as you’re looking for some cheap options that was a cheap option for a guy who gets on base 35% of the time again I’m not losing sleep over the Braves not signing Mike toan but I was a little surprised um to see him you know one sign for for that low and the Braves really not be in on him that we know of and then finally the Nationals won the draft lottery they get the number one overall pick not great for Atlanta Braves although next year’s draft class from what I can tell is not nearly as close to what it has been the last two years that we’ve seen some really good talent but that could change throughout the spring uh but the Nationals get the number one overall pick followed by the Angels Mariners Rockies Cardinals Pirates Marlins Marlins had the highest odds to get tied with one of the team I think it was the Rockies they were t with the yeah the Rockies to get the first overall pick and they get the seventh pick in the draft so tough break there for the Marlins and then the Blue Jays at eight then the Reds and the white socks who were ineligible for the top overall pcks so that is your draft lottery a lot happening on day two at the winter meetings again not much happening for the Atlanta Braves but a lot of stuff happening at the winter meetings a lot going on um Shane Coleman says what do you think about Jack flarity I like Jack flarity I like the bounceback that he had last year and I think it is for real but again is he gonna get 25 million what is what is he going to get uh he he could be looking at a big deal as well um it’s just Braves aren’t going to pay that they’re just not um a lot of other teams coming or a lot of other names coming off doc keeps asking about Trevor Bower it’s it’s not going to happen um it’s just not we’re not seeing anybody the organist is back that is the big move the Braves made at the winter meetings thanks Braves Thrills for mentioning that uh he is back and he has Blake try and sign with the Dodgers I want to say it was a two-year like $22 million deal or something like that I know it was around 12 Mill ion dollar aav so that one did hurt me a little bit I really wanted him um see people talking about Charlie Morton is that what the Braves were going to do it could be and that could be fine again I would not pay more than 12 million a year for Charlie Morton um he can probably get more than that elsewhere with these prices I mean it’s a good market for starting pitching but uh you know I I feel like that’s a fallback for the Braves we’ll see what else is out there if not then we’ll Circle back with Charlie Morton and see if we can get him on a team friendly deal to come back for for one more time uh so I certainly think that could be the case Chris Hester where does t Oscar end up I still don’t think it’s going to be with the Braves it would not surprise me if he still goes to the Dodgers um but I don’t think he’ll be with the Braves hopes so you know wouldn’t wouldn’t be upset at it I I wanted him last year for one year 24 million they would bit a great move but now he’s coming off a really good year he’s going to be looking for that long-term deal I K I hate to keep beating a dead horse here but until I see the Braves actually spend big money on a free agent I’m not going to believe it now they’ve done in the past for Marcel Ozuna uh certainly you know 75 million so I mean they can do it on a shorter term deal which I think is what T Oscar would get maybe a three-year deal something like that so it is in the realm of of possibility but again I think this this offseason has just been wild and what we’ve seen so far and the number of teams who are in on players the number of teams that are willing to spend big money the Braves just aren’t going to play in that playground they are not they are not going to sit here and try to outbid you for a player Alex anthopoulos has his bottom line that he’s willing to spend on a player what he values that player as and he will not budge on it we’ve seen it we we saw it with Josh Donaldson which ended up being a great move in the end he was not willing to budge past the line of what he valued a player we saw with Dan B Swanson he was not going to go past what he valued a player right or wrong he did that with Freddy Freeman as well he was not going to give Freddy Freeman that sixth year I would have given it to him I know many of you would have as well but when alexopoulos evaluates a player and what he believes they are worth he’s not going to go beyond that and these prices players are getting pushed past what many would believe they are worth but again as we’ve learned this week they’re worth what teams are willing to pay them and that’s just what free agency is that’s what the open market is all right great conversation here thank you all for joining
