a trip that began with Good Vibrations ends with some bad frustration Rangers lose consecutive games for the first time this season and this one was unseemly 62 the final in Edmonton against the Oilers inside our Delta MSG Studios John Ganon alongside Steve alette much to discuss much to dissect at first blush what’s most troubling I think the off the rush uh offense for the Rangers wasn’t able to keep up with what Edmonton brought but it wasn’t really offense versus offense as much as it was the Rangers defense not being able to punch back and I think that starts with your number one centerman you know mik is a minus four in this hockey game he needed to be a plus for the Rangers to have a chance to win go for three on the power play and faceoffs you’re 44% which you know typically leans to not being ready to go so you got badly out played uh not just shots on goal but scoring chances this was a game that got away from the Rangers early and this is now to me a miserable road trip it’s you you know you Vancouver was whatever Seattle’s not a great team but in two games that you wanted to see a marquee matchup in this game and this wasn’t a marquee matchup it was over early yeah wins in the first two games of the trip but then 89 opposition shots on goal and nine goals against in the two games in the province of Alberta First against Calgary then against Edmonton and you mentioned it I mean Jonathan Quick had come in with four goals against all season in four plus games he allows six tonight and I’m not sure any of them really can be faulted on his shoulders uh Darnell nurse only because it went through him and I could just see his reaction he knew he should have had that one but a lot of east to west in this game again and that’s that’s the real issue here because if you want to be a Stanley Cup Contender you need to be a top five team off the rush defending and a lot of it is the back pressure and it’s just not there for whatever reason John you can go back three seasons and the Rangers were once 15th at off the rush defense and and I was hoping at that time they were going to close in on five because you’ve got to be a top five defending team off the rush to win a Stanley Cup to be a contender so over the last three years the Rangers have gone from 15th to 22nd to 28th in this season currently sitting at 29th and what does that tell you like you go back through the last five Stanley Cups and you’ve got last year Florida winning and they’re fourth two years ago Vegas winning a Stanley Cup they were fourth Colorado three years ago winning they were second Tampa Bay wins two cups at four and St Louis if you go all the way back to that St Louis team that wasn’t really good in 2019 they were fifth they were good at defending above all what what are we doing here what’s it about it’s about winning a Stanley Cup and John if you don’t defend well you don’t have a shot doesn’t matter what you do offensively and there’s enough proof there and the statistical fact of the matter is the Rangers aren’t close to defending well enough off The Rush right now they know it but they’re they’re not self-correcting and that’s what’s perplexing about this they’re just they’re getting worse at it not better worse it’s time to hear from some of the veterans who speak up about what they’re seeing after game 19 of the Season here’s Vincent troch immediately after this 6-2 loss on the dry right now in the first period especially and we got to come out with a little bit more a lot more urgency and we got to dig dig deep here and look ourselves in the mirror before next game you’re still kind of Within Reach at two nothing after one period and then it seems like you know they get a fouron four goal and um and it just kind of falls apart I guess they got some pretty high powerered guys over there yeah they were good off the rush obviously they’re fast they’re very skilled team and I felt like we just gave them way too much space and we need to have more urgency in the second too I think that’s moral the story urgency it seems like you guys you know what you have in this room you know what you did last year and stuff I mean seems like guys are waiting for it to turn around I mean you have to be more proactive to turn things around I think yeah you’re spot on yeah you talk about this team being good on the rush is that the little things you have to do get those Pucks in deep not you know not Rim the fck out missing shots Rim the fck out like is that those little details like are a big thing against this team yeah turnovers are are magnified against this team um but I think it’s just just being on top of them more and I keep saying it but urgency what’s the discon on the that you’re seeing right now I feel like we had first a couple power plays we had chances quick chances and good looks but we were one and done um we got to be better on the retrievals for sure and our entries need to be a lot better our breakouts have we’re not getting in clean and we got to solve that sorry if you assis but just the last two starts I mean what do you attribute it to urgency I mean we’ve been lucky enough to to have those two behind us this this far this season um we’re leaving about to dry early on I mean we got out and I thought we played ozone played ozone and then they’d get rushes and their rushes were ended up in the back of the net we’re just little things staying on top of them making sure that we take away their time and space and do more of that so Vincent tro talking about a lot of the details of the game that are important that maybe go overlooked when you watch but three different times Steve in that interview he used the word urgency I’m sure you’ve been in many dressing rooms where urgency has been used what does it say about a team that in game 19 urgency is such an overwhelming element of the postgame storyline to me urgency what that means is that your players that aren’t on the puck are all very quick to get to where they should be in case the player that’s going for the puck doesn’t win that battle because then you have layers to your net you have plenty of coverage right now there’s holes everywhere on the Rangers because they don’t have urgency away from the puck to either back check so that the defenseman can stand up or for check so they can initiate where the puck is going to be in the offensive zone there was no there was no four check in this game but you know what I see more than anything there’s a broken Spirit on the group John that’s what I’m concerned cuz the urgency he talked about was about coming right out of the game the LA the last two games they just weren’t ready to play 20 shots on goal against in each of the last two first periods so I think that’s what he means by urgency because he also said we need more in the second period yeah well and how about like not coming out in the second period to I think a lot of it is team spirit and you think that you can measure it you can’t but you can feel it you can feel it and you can see it you can see it on the ice right now nobody’s playing with that Joy with that enthusiasm and I think they’re going through it right now and a number of players are fighting it and it’s running through the lineup but they have a lot to figure out they’re far from where they need to be they know that but you know they’re going to have to do some soul searching as a group sometimes you can have a players meeting John and it and it goes south it doesn’t even get better I remember a player meeting that we had in Pittsburgh oh my God guys are yelling at each other the next second we get smoked A3 didn’t help so just because you might hear in the media oh the players had a meeting that could be good or bad but they certainly need one because it’s got to get thrown out on the table right now in pure honesty and these are the words from Vincent tro we need to dig deeper and look at ourselves in the mirror before the next game Let’s Hear What Adam Fox had to say after the 6-2 loss yeah it was really bad just flat out you know was not good today scored a lot of goals on the rush I guess what was the key to you know that they gave him a lot of Rush opportunities what did you guys do uh that’s makes sense yeah uh you know I think obviously when you’re down you’re pressing a little more and that’s going to lead to rushes but uh you know like I said ear I think we were just on our heels and uh let them take the game to us and you know you’re letting up 20 shots getting five or six and in the first period you’re obviously sitting back and and letting them dictate the game and uh against a team like that you go down you got to press they have the skill that’s just going to uh capitalize on the chances so uh and I think the start was was prettyy indicative of you know kind of how the game went Adam just how do you reflect on the road trip as a whole yeah it’s tough with these with these last two games I think it started off good and uh we just kind of lost our way I think uh you know like we keep reiterating those starts are just not going to cut it uh you know especially against a team like that like I said you get down early and you start pressing you know you start pinching a little more start you know staying in and trying to get some offense they got some guys that they’re going to punish you so uh you know it was good to get those first two wins but uh really disappointing last two games and uh you know got a home game to to regroup and uh definitely figure some things out and uh have a good bounce back feel like you guys need to work on sustain Zone time definitely uh I mean seems like we kind of found a little bit more in the second and uh you know past two games I mean giv up 20 something shots five it’s it’s just you know indicative of you know a couple things I think like I said we’re we’re on our heels a little bit and uh you know one and done in in the offensive zone and not making them defend I think that’s uh you know once you get the cycle game going and uh you know whether be low to high shots to the net and getting them a little scrambly I think that kind of opens things up and uh yeah we’re definitely not doing enough of that right now third time this season the Rangers will allow six in a game the other times Utah and Buffalo 6-2 the final
