breaking news here on CBS Sports HQ opening game of the Maui Invitational between two-time defending national champions Yukon and Memphis and in overtime Yukon down two had the chance for a game-winning three from Hassan diara but he misses it and Memphis nailing the upset 9997 at the opening game of the Maui Invitational 9997 they Advanced to the semi-finals it’s yukon’s first loss since February 20th at kraton they fall to 4-1 on the season Memphis improves to 5-0 story of this game for Memphis Tyrese Hunter 26 points 17 of those came in the second half PJ Hagerty chipped in with 22 points they had four players hitting in double figures in this one as for Yukon their leading scorer in this game Terrace Reed junor he had 22 they had six players hit double figures but go down to defeat 9997 in the opening game of the Maui Invitational let’s get some thoughts on this from college basketball writer and podcast host Gary Parish Gary first of all I’ll ask you just Memphis here they go off to a 5-0 start how big is this victory for Penny Hardaway and company massive and I think you could argue not only the biggest win of Penny hardaway’s head coaching career at the division one level but arguably the biggest win since John caliper was the coach at Memphis and he left that school for Kentucky back in 2009 you know Memphis um has not embarrassed itself on the court under Penny Hardway but the level of success that a lot of us anticipated honestly hasn’t been there just two NCAA tournaments in his first six years only one NCAA tournament Victory and then just one off thec Court headline after another most of which um have you know been had negative connotations connected to them but none of that matters on a da like today because just telling you as a Memphis graduate who still lives in the area people want so badly to care deeply about that program it really is a part of the DNA of the community there just hasn’t been a lot of good stuff lately but this is as good as it gets and obviously the fan bases is super excited and if you’re um Penny Hard Away you got to feel um really pleased with the way your guys showed up shot the ball well from the perimeter and registered a the type of victory that will launch you onto the national race are Memphis has not been ranked one day this season but when I update the top 25 and one on Tuesday morning obviously the Tigers will be there yeah and it s like they weren’t tested in this game because Yukon came back in the second half I mean Gary there’s a lot of new faces on this team but that Killer Instinct seems to be there they took this game to overtime and came within a shot of getting a win here when you look at this Yukon team and this defeat what are you seeing in this team that maybe gives you a little bit of concern well Jeremy I think we spent a lot of the offseason maybe lying to ourselves a little bit that Yukon would just keep on moving down the track same as it ever was but the truth is they lost four starters to the NBA draft Dan Hurley is still there and he’s obviously excellent Alex caran is there and he’s really really good could be you know the Big East player of the year but everybody else on that Yukon roster is somebody who wasn’t on the Yukon roster last season or is being asked to play a bigger role more important role this season I have no doubt or at least very few doubts that Yukon is going to be very good as this season unfolds but the truth is Dan Hurley and these first four games before heading to Maui didn’t challenge his team at all they played Four programs ranked outside of the top 320 at kenpom they were projected to blow out every opponent they blew out every opponent I don’t know how much they gained from that in Maui this afternoon they they ran into a a real basketball team that had you know tested themselves against Power conference opponents who had been in True Road games and Memphis came out and and threw the first punch and did enough to to hang on it is probably frustrating for the Memphis staff that they got taken to overtime given they were up 12 points with less than three to play but alls well that ends well and Penny hardaway’s got a five and0 team that you know is going to play in the winners bracket semi-finals of the Maui Invitational and not many people were predicting that this morning yeah for Yukon the heest they can finish at the tournament now is fifth so you talk about what kind of a boost this could be for Memphis what about for Yukon what’s Dan Hurley saying to his team what could this mean for me or for Yukon moving forward well I think the first thing he probably does is is walk into that locker room and on some level in his own way apologize because he got a technical foul in the final minute of overtime of a game that was in that moment tied I’m not going to sit here and insist that Dan Hurley’s technical foul is what cost Yukon the game but it obviously did not help and I’m sure he’s disappointed in himself a little bit for allowing his emotions to take him to that place if you watch Yukon basketball at all you know that Dan is constantly talking to the officials but in the officials mind he crossed the line in OT and he crossed the line when his team really couldn’t afford for him to do it beyond that I think it can just be a wakeup call you know I mentioned Alex caran is the only starter back Dan Hurley is is the coach the staff’s intact but a bunch of these guys are either new or being asked to to produce in different roles and they throw those Yukon jerseys on and they are constantly called the back-to-back Champs but if I’m Dan Hurley I’m now reminding my locker room um Adama sonogo is not here Jordan Hawkins is not here Tristan Newton Donovan kingan Stefon Castle cam Spencer yes our program has won back-to-back championships but the guys in this locker room we haven’t done much with this team yet it’s time to refocus it’s time to get going again Yukon longterm should be fine but obviously um there’s some things to work out they just let a Memphis team that’s unranked shoot above 50% from the field against them that is that is not okay yeah we’ll see what kind of a response they have in their next game of course they’re on the other side of the bracket Gary Paris joining us here on CBS Sports HQ helping us break down memphis’s upset win over Yukon in the opening game of the Maui invitation and you can bet Gary’s going to be breaking this game down with Matt norlander over on the eye on college basketball
