St Western preview you’re talking about Dwayne Stevens possibly being maybe the future head coach in Michigan State you just you just had like a I don’t know a blanking moment whoa dude oh my God I just got shot with a tranquilizer oh my God okay unbelievable that’s enough that’s crazy apparently apparently you can’t even imply that one day there will be a different head coach of Michigan State basketball without being shot with a tranquilizer dart in the year of Our Lord 2024 crazy anyway Dwayne Stevens great guy I got to interview him back when I worked for field of 68 when he took over as the Western Michigan head coach I got to interview him it was one of my favorite interviews I’ve ever done with a coach I firmly believe that Dwayne Stevens is a great human being and a basketball coach that I still do believe in I think uh you know it’s been a rough start at Western Michigan both this season and I think in general in his tenure they started eight and 23 his first year now that may sound gross but mind you Western Michigan had lost 13 or excuse me won 13 games the two seasons combined before Dwayne Stevens got there so he was inheriting basically one of the worst programs in the country they went from 8 and 23 to 12 and 20 in year two and uh they are not good this year three and eight to start this season however C tell me if you think this is crazy they’ve had a lot of games that could have swung the other way this year I don’t think this team is as bad as their record shows they lost by just eight points at Dayton they lost by six against St Thomas who’s 124th on kmom lost by three to Valpo in their last game like there’s a lot of coin flippy games against decent opponents Western Michigan has played I think we’re looking at this team a lot different if they’re like five and six right now instead of three and eight yeah I mean it I think you’re doing a really positive positive positive little angle here on Western Michigan this is am I yeah for lack of a better turn this is another bad basketball team and a stretch of bad basketball teams that Michigan state has been playing um and yes they’ve had some things go back and forth and that haven’t gone their way but in the grand scheme of themes this is just kind of a bad basketball team um and it’s it’s one where Michigan State I think should be able to out Talent uh have a lot of fun show out a lot of coard Dunkey dunks um maybe the layoff between games is something that could be a little bit funky in this one and maybe there’s a little bit of like oh Dwayne Stevens knows Michigan State how they operate like we saw Bowling Green was able to have a lot of success with tumtum on the staff I don’t know if that’s necessarily what you want to equate it to but uh yeah you know this is this is a a a game between two teams that I think are on different stratospheres though the whether you think what Stratosphere Michigan state is on but it’s on a way different one the Western Michigan yeah yeah I mean yeah I’m probably uh stretching for a guy that I really like I think that’s what this is I do oh oh I like him but I just want to make that very clear too I I like him really really nice guy even at the I think it was the kesu Spartans golf outing he was there showed up was you know said what up so he’s a really nice guy yeah very nice guy uh there are I can’t really stretch this this much there’s not much you’re going to look at that you’ll see in this Western Michigan team that uh will remind you of things that maybe Dwayne Stevens did in his time at Michigan State however there are a few can I talk about a few please uh for starters this Western Michigan team doesn’t shoot like any threes cart like oh wow what a what an Ode to to the Spartans I’m not saying that’s a staple of Tom ISO teams through all the years but in recent years he hasn’t really had teams that like to shoot the three a lot uh Dwayne Stevens team shoots only 27% of their shots from three-point range that’s crazy uh I will say in in this era of college basketball think that’s a pretty losing formula I think you’ve got to shoot threes to win games and uh Dwayne Stevens team does not shoot a lot of Threes they also don’t make a lot of Threes that’s probably why they don’t shoot a lot of Threes is because they only shoot 27% from three as a team so this is truly one of the worst shooting teams in college basketball the only thing profile wise that Western Michigan does well car is rebound and they’re very very good at it on both ends that is something that I think uh is pretty clearly something that Stevens and ISO had a lot of sex success together and uh excuse me they had a lot of success together at Michigan State doing dominating teams on the boards uh Western Michigan 40th in the country in offensive rebounding 12th in the country in defensive rebounding just go ahead yeah I’m sorry man that is crazy they had a lot of success they they did they did um and the another angle that I was thinking about with this game uh there also might be a little bit involved in ISO doesn’t want to blow out west I don’t think he wants to embarrass his guy like this might be the future head coach of Michigan State he doesn’t want to embarrass his guy whoa sorry whoa sorry eventually Mr ISO will have to move on whoa he will whoa probably the next three to five years not true that’s absolutely just not true is very much true off top of your head how old is Dwayne Stevens o uh top of my head I’m G say there’s like a 20y year window I would believe with this answer 57 he’s 53 53 really it’s 53 so if the timeline wants to go like some Michigan fans Michigan State fans think Dwayne Stevens will be our head coach at the ripe age of 60 so my understanding is that Dwayne Stevens had been on staff for what like almost two decades in Michigan State and through those years he had many opportunities to potentially try and get Ahad head coaching job he never seriously considered it until recently so the timing of that was always interesting to me because it does feel like you know if you are the right-hand man maybe the successor that ISO wants whenever the time comes um is he leaving Michigan State because ISO wants him to like go get a little experience or is he leaving Michigan State because ISO has maybe told him privately hey I’m not planning on leaving anytime soon and Stevens is like well not going to wait forever like I could see it going both ways you know yeah I could see it going both ways too um now I don’t think that that experiment’s gone to what Dwayne Stevens thought it would have said like Western Michigan has really struggled and this year it’s accumulated it’s been really really bad this year they’re currently 288th on kmom like you mentioned they had some bad losses this team is atrocious defensively uh they’re in the 300s they really don’t have much of endearing outside of the rebounding which you mentioned but like everything else they are just pretty pretty terrible they’re allowing teams to shoot 55% from two-point range like it’s just not really much there no Rim protection um because they don’t really have like the sides that’ll just like overpower you so I think it’s a game where you expect like Jackson kler and Michigan State’s front Court to be able to do things um if Michigan State plays to the what they played this past couple games they beat Western by 25 at least yeah okay okay at the crib yeah kenpom hasda says a 25 Point win so that’s exactly what you’re expected to do analytically uh quickly Personnel wise anybody on Western that gets your attention there are quite a few former state of Michigan guys on this roster yeah I’ve I’ve always been a member of Owen lobsinger Hive um I could not yeah yeah I’ve been I’ve been a member of Len L Owen lob singer Hive uh I’ve the only member of it since his days uh for Flint Powers I believe he played for the family A Team um but I could not tell you in all honesty right now what Owen has done this year for Western Michigan he’s averaging like 11 and seven he’s arguably been their best player um all right my guy he finally broke out I think he’s a senior now he is a senior he played at Flint Powers he is a Flintstone Flintstone love that Flint Flintstone’s always good but I think Strickland’s been their best player they got Javon Hannah who’s Mount Clemens they got uh Amman Bates Max Burton was a big man from Williamston they got a lot of like local Michigan state area probably grew up Michigan State fan Types on this team and uh that’s interesting to me they got my guy on staff too uh who’s that Chris Fowler he’s on staff at I had no idea he was at Western he’s the associate head coach I believe oh wow that’s it’s really so another return to the bresin very exciting um they have a Kazo Central kid as well that I watched a couple times in cazo anyways all right so we’re just doing a geography lesson here uh Michigan State what are you looking for what do you want to see from your team in this game you are coming off a co- and car Legacy performance Jeremy fears great game basically all things are good in Michigan state land right now and you expect that to continue yeah I think all I think what I’m looking for is just not for these things to be oneoff performance es even though it’s against Bad teams I just think that building stacking these performances until you get to a point where you’re playing a better team I think we have Ohio State coming up on Friday uh say what you want about Ohio State’s basketball team they’re coming off a big win against Kentucky I think that you want to kind of Stack these performances against teams that you are better than against players that you are better than in hopes that it accumulates to like when you play against the Bruce thortons the better players of the Big 10 that you’re able to do that same level of performance so I just want to see some consistency out of the guys uh I would love for you know I think a dire thing would be if like Jeremy fs and Coen Carr and those guys just laid absolute eggs in this game it it feel like it feel like one offy that won’t happen um can we do a quick roleplay exercise uh sure even though I’m scared so I’ll be Dwayne Stevens you be Tom ISO that seems like that that’s that’s not how it should be if we’re doing assigning right so that basically what I was after was what do you think Tom ISO wants out of this game truly like does Tom ISO want to come in and beat DJ by 50 he he want no he doesn’t want to do that he wants to beat him beat him handedly and invite him to the podium after the game like he did campy because we are kind of at the point here with Dwayne say they lose this game by 30 and then they bot him out and win seven games on the season he’s getting fired right yes and if he gets fired he can’t get the Michigan state job no and do we think Tom has that in the back of his mind at all no I don’t you truly don’t no I don’t especially because I think that Tom is probably the belief that he if he wants DJ to get the job he could get him the job too even if he gets fired yeah probably you’re right it’s just I don’t know it’s one of those things because I feel like you gotta be thinking about contingency plans of who exactly will be the coach when Tom is Greg come on come on I mean
