Michigan has we thought had found itself before uh we kind of got to the middle of December they’ve lost two of their last three games now those two losses were two solid Arkansas and Oklahoma teams lost those two games by a combined three points Michigan’s three losses this season come by a combined Five Points we’re a basket or two away from talking about this Michigan team very very differently I think we’re going to talk about this from the Michigan perspective you know because Western Kentucky can provide some problems we get to them in the second but from a Michigan perspective cart what do you want to see from them what are you hoping to see from them in their final game of 2024 uh look this this Michigan team a lot of their wins and losses this year uh and I guess I could speak freely on this one is Greg’s not on the other side of the call uh I’m kidding with that but uh to me a lot of the scripts to their games have gone very similar similarly and I think even Greg if he was here he would agree with this if they shoot the ball well it’s hard to beat them because their front court is that great like Vlad gold and Danny wolf are playing like one of the best front courts in the country it’s basically whether one they can take care of the ball and then two hit shots they have not been able to consistently do that in the Wake Forest game they don’t shoot the ball actually I think the Way Forest might be the one outlier they struggle against teams that have like this kind of star guard that’s able to do what he wants against their back court uh and they don’t shoot the ball well and you know you can’t go the whole season just eventually being like oh we didn’t hit shots and the star guard out starred us right right because then you because then you get to the end like eventually you have to do something about it you have to either one knock down shots or two somebody needs to step up and you know have some maybe some better guard play in that spot and you know looking at you know the person now that uh West Kentucky has they do have a really good guard and Don McKenry who’s having a really good year averaging almost 19 points a game a 62 guard he I guess I would put him in the mold of kind of like that guy that can kind of just be a do better than the guard across from type player but um this this Michigan team I think for them going into Big 10 play you have your Ace in the Hole whatever the phrase is uh with your front court right yeah now it’s about getting consistent play from Trey Donson where he doesn’t do the first half disappearing act taking care of the ball as a team you have to take care of the ball and maybe finding something from the bench because right now you’re really not getting much you’re getting like will cheddar having a performance here and there but LJ kase’s racking up dmps Sam Walter shot looks very flat right now and then outside of that there’s not really many other ways you can go here so you know uh uh a a game where you look across the Big 10 there’s a lot of teams playing like super cupcakes this is one that you don’t want to sleep your performance because Western Kentucky is not a barn burner by any means but they are not what I would constitute as like you can just show up and win type team they they’re an interesting team they play at an incredibly fast pace which if they’re able to dictate the tempo in this game I think will make things interesting if Michigan wants to play Vlad and and Danny together all the time which that’s their that’s their biggest bread and butter and the biggest thing they have going for them offensively is that Danny wolf flad golden pick and roll that we talked about over and over again every broadcast talks about over and over again because it’s awesome and we don’t see like we don’t see that pretty much anywhere else in college basketball right now but it could make things interesting if you’re trying to have those two guys run up and down the court as much as Western Kentucky wants to have that run up and down the court so you couple that with the Western Kentucky defense that’s top 70 in the country on kpom like that could provide some problems if you don’t bring your b game the Michigan doesn’t need to bring their aame to win but if they bring their C game or their Dame or there you know we’re still we maybe had a little too much chocolate a little too much candy when we were home for for the holidays it could make things interesting I don’t I don’t I would stop short of it saying Western Kentucky could win this game yeah but they could make it interesting they could certainly make it interesting um they got they have some endearing qualities as as a team you I’m saying like when you look when you we do these previews we look at these teams you kind of look for like the little like oh that team’s good at this this team’s good at that uh one thing that I’m actually impressed you mentioned that they play Fast typically the teams that are really bad is the teams that play fast but they shouldn’t play fast because they’re turn the ball over at extremely high rate um now I’m not saying Western kuy’s taking care of the ball with the best of them but for as fast as they play relative to their turnover percentage really not the worst in the world they’re not like a Michigan Who currently still rank 340th in the country in turnover percentage they a I mean it is ridiculous how they got to they honestly that should be the whole talking point of this whole video this team cannot be good if they are going to be that bad in turnning the basketball over it is ridiculous I wrote earlier this season in our off report that as good as Danny wolf and Vlad golden are in kind of what Rody Gil brings you I think Trey Donaldson is Michigan’s most important player the turnovers are are part of that he is the guy who can be really good taking care of the ball we’ve also seen him be pretty wild taking care of the ball we’ve seen him have really productive games this season we’ve seen him put up goose eggs and be in inefficient turn the ball over a ton this season I think you need a big tra to Hon game you brought him up earlier I think at this point you know what you’re getting from Danny wolf you know what you’re getting from V golden Rody Gil is probably going to give you somewhere between 11 and 14 points that should be enough it depends if it feels good though it’s like you know Rody Gil’s got that AJ hogard thing going on it’s like he hate watching like oh is it really doing much and you get to the end of the game he has 13 five and five yeah so I think Donaldson’s the guy who pushes them over the edge right who takes them from being a fringe top 25 team to being a legit top 20 kind of team when he’s playing really well and when he’s playing his his best version um be interesting to see no official line out yet for this game Ken palom has Michigan winning this game 85 to 69 so that’s a what a 16 point spread here for calculating that um so we’ll use that as the line when the official lines do come out though make sure you check out dimer Pro I I think that Michigan does does cover this this this number um you know given what the front Court will be able to do I have fate that at home you know they’ll kind of be able to get away with this one the one thing about Western Kentucky I want to make sure I had this correctly because when I looked at it it didn’t make much sense to me they’re kind they’re a small team yeah they’re they do not I think that they’re tall this player might be might be Tyrone Marshall that they start is Tyrone Marshall Jr and he’s 6’8 yep uh so you know they’re they’re an undersized team this will be ones where Danny wolf and Vlad golden have their way um I think it might get a little bit dicey but I do think they covered and last thing to your point rout that I want to mention that because I think you hit it the nail on the head is that Danny wolf is what he is and he’s going to be a guy that’s going to turn the ball over if he’s going to play the game his way it puts more pressure on the other guys to take care of them all right like you gotta like it it’s maybe it’s not fair but Trey Donaldson Rody Gale namari brette those guys have to take care of the ball because unfortunately Danny wolf is going to be a three to four turnover guy on most nights maybe more so other guys have to be the stabilizer so you don’t feel it because once if Danny wolf having four and then your point guard’s having three or four everything’s just piling up yeah you’re you’re fighting uphill at that point right mhm Western Kentuck is a tough team to turn the ball over against to CU they will turn into points on the other end what they want to run like you’re looking at a you’re Ser typical small fast team going up against a bigger team that wants to play through its front Court noan doesn’t play like slow proding it’s not Virginia right but you still play through your front court and that slows you down a little bit I still think Michigan covers I think Michigan wins this game let’s say 81 to 62 I think they handle their business I don’t think Wester KY got the high-end talent and I do think Michigan’s front Court will eventually just dominate Western Kentucky but I do think the topers can go on some runs in this game maybe one in the first half one in the second half that could make things interesting before Michigan kind of dises themselves again yeah that’s that’s kind of how I see
