The Cubs strengthened their bullpen by adding veteran left-hander Caleb Thielbar before the start of 2025.
On Tuesday, the team announced that Thielbar had signed a one-year Major League contract, providing manager Craig Counsell with a seasoned southpaw for his relief staff. After facing bullpen struggles early last season, adding depth and securing left-handed options became a priority for the Cubs this offseason.
Thielbar, 37, joins the Cubs after spending eight seasons in the majors with the Minnesota Twins (2013-15, 2020-24). He was absent from the big leagues between 2016 and 2019. Over 347 career appearances, he posted a 3.38 ERA, striking out 347 batters while walking 107 in 320 innings.
Throughout his career, Thielbar has held left-handed batters to a .213 average and a .593 OPS, compared to a .240 average and .711 OPS against right-handed hitters. In 2024, he struggled against right-handed batters (.286 average, .845 OPS) but continued to perform well against lefties (.244 average, .653 OPS).
Last season, Thielbar primarily relied on his four-seam fastball, averaging 93.2 mph (per Statcast), complementing it with a sweeper, curveball, and slider as secondary pitches. He finished the year with a 5.32 ERA, recording 53 strikeouts and 24 walks in 47 1/3 innings across 59 appearances. Over the previous four seasons (179 games), Thielbar posted a more favorable 3.21 ERA, averaging 11.1 strikeouts per nine innings.
Before adding Thielbar, the Cubs bolstered their bullpen with right-handers Eli Morgan (acquired via trade from the Guardians) and Cody Poteet (via trade from the Yankees). They also claimed lefty Rob Zastryzny off waivers from the Brewers. Chicago is expected to continue seeking bullpen depth, including through non-roster Minor League signings.
The Cubs’ current bullpen is projected to include holdovers like Nate Pearson, Porter Hodge, Tyson Miller, Julian Merryweather, and Keegan Thompson. Other candidates for spots on the 40-man roster include Daniel Palencia, Ethan Roberts, Luke Little, Jack Neely, and Gavin Hollowell.
