The Cincinnati Reds quickly added one veteran starting pitcher in a big trade and nabbed a $20 million free agent in another early offseason deal β and now look whoβs coming to the annual winter meetings for the Reds to pursue this week in Dallas.
Not that the Reds are anybodyβs favorites to land young Japanese pitching star Roki Sasaki. In fact, theyβre just one of 30 teams in line to make a pitch to the right-hander during the allotted 45-day window once he gets posted by his Japanese team, which was expected to happen this week.
But like Shohei Ohtani when he first came to the U.S., Sasakiβs free agency falls under the amateur acquisition rules because heβs under 25, and that means bidding is limited to whatever teams have in their international bonus pool for 2025.
Japanese star Roki Sasaki pitching during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. He is subject to the amateur acquisition rules because he is under 25 and the Reds have one of the eight largest pools of money to acquire him.
Again, the point isnβt that the Reds have enough perks to offer Sasaki to wrest him away from the Dodgers or anyone else from his allegedly desired West Coast.
Reds Golden At-Bat MLBW&W: Is MLB creating Savannah Bananas-like sideshow with Golden At-Bat idea?
Reds Jonathan IndiaJonathan India to Reds fans: ‘You guys always had our back through the good and the bad’
So where does he go from here to fill the roster needs after quick strikes to solidify the rotation by bringing Reds pitcher of the year Nick Martinez back from free agency for the $21.05 million qualifying offer and landing Brady Singer from the Royals in the Jonathan India trade?
Aren’t they done with the rotation after the Nick Martinez and Brady Singer moves?
Yes, with an asterisk named Roki Sasaki. Because the Japanese right-hander gets signed as an amateur, heβll make the big-league minimum in salary with six years club control for whoever lands him for that international pool bonus.
Also: Donβt believe the way every trade rumor is presented. Like that one last week about the Reds being one of the teams talking to the White Sox about Garrett Crochet. The Reds checked in on Crochet before they got Singer; the talks went nowhere; and thereβs no reason to think theyβll re-engage at this point.
The ideal fit would be in the outfield, which is in much more flux than an infield group that includes young All-Star Elly De La Cruz and two key players returning from injury: Candelario and Matt McLain.
βItβs probably safe to say that,β Krall said. βAt the same time we still need to fill backup catcher. We signed (catcher/outfielder) Alex Jackson to a minor-league deal. But can we continue to improve that?
βWeβre just looking to get the best possible upgrade position-player wise.β
The Reds are in the market for a power bat, preferably in the outfield, and the Guardians’ Lane Thomas and first baseman Josh Naylor (above) appear to be on the market.
The Guardians are said to be shopping arbitration-eligible center fielder Lane Thomas and first baseman Josh Naylor, both of whom come with significant projected salaries for the Redsβ budget β along with the player capital cost of a trade. Franconaβs relationship with the Guardians and Naylor in particular might make it seem like a natural conversation. And the Reds have kicked the tires on those guys. But without a clear path for making either fit at this point.

all right what’s going on Nick Kirby Austin Leighton welcome to Chatterbox Reds day one of the winter meetings we’re going to be live here just during halftime of the uh uh Bengals Monday Night Football game um if you were watching uh Chatterbox Bengals uh they had taken a break during halftime and uh this stream will actually be redirected right back to Chatterbox Bengals so don’t even have to click anywhere after um this is over um but Austin how we feeling my friend how’s your uh how’s your Monday going good it’s uh good to be talking a little baseball sandwiched in between uh Monday Night Football so it’s a very uh I don’t know Cincinnati night so far but it’s weird as a Bengals fan I don’t know if I want them to lose to solidify a good draft pick potentially or you know if they win it’s kind of a win-win so I I don’t know your thoughts but it’s a cool position to be in I guess uh I’ll I you know here’s my only thoughts for Maxwell for you uh HUD day yay that that’s Max wants him to win that’s my thought let’s talk baseball because we only got like 15 minutes and I ain’t wasting it talking about a 48 football team I’m just kidding all right um day one of the winter meetings before we get to that we got to as always shout out our sponsor Deep South Commodities DSC is a leader in renewable commodities for biofuel production specializing in use cooking oil collection aggregation and sales visit www.de southcom commodities.com for more information thanks as always to our friends at DSC all right it was actually a pretty quiet day Austin in in the winter meetings um especially when you compare it to you know like the largest contract in baseball history yesterday uh the only two moves that were like official today Philly signed Jordan Romano tiger signed Alex Cobb um but again I don’t think it’s necessarily anything out of the ordinary for day one to kind of be quiet especially when there was there was a lot of action over the weekend um I would expect that we’ll see some stuff um Reds are not over the next couple days but a couple of the top story lines we’ll kind of run through quick uh everything will kind of be a quick hitter here first one Luis Robert reportedly receiving a lot of attention in trade talks I know this is a guy that a lot of Reds fans really want Austin what is your your thoughts are on Luis Robert I’ll be honest I’m not too high on him we talked a little bit in the episode we did you know a week or so back where to me it just seems like there’s some better options out there in the free agency market that you don’t necessarily have to give up you know trade prospects for things like that position players and I just look at you know even comparing his War to kind of some of the guys that are still out there I’m sure we’ll hit on a little bit I I’m not sold on that being the answer for our Outfield problems um I I you know I think we might be somewhat in an agreement there but I’m leager to hear your thoughts I I just I just don’t think I can’t get too excited about it that’s just where I’m at yeah I would look if the so white so would give away Luis Robert and it was just you’re paying the three years 55 million um that that he’s owed I know he has an opt out after next season but again if you’re trading for him you would assume you would want that three years of him I I I would take him for that but again I just I don’t I don’t I think that’s too much risk uh for a guy that’s already making that much money I would rather just go out and sign like thosar Hernandez and not give up a prospect now you would have to give up a qualifying a draft pick I don’t think that’s as bad as like giving up you know one of your Top 10 Prospects or anything so I’m I’m out on Robert um tomorrow I’m excited uh we’re going to do a uh a live show during the draft lottery clay sten’s coming on he has the exact opposite so if you are a Luis Roberts Stan and you’re sick of these guys saying we don’t really think Luis Roberts are a good deal you’ll get to hear the other side tomorrow um I’m just I’m not really I’m not in on on Robert I think again unless they’re giving him away but I don’t know why the White Soxs would give them away it would make no sense to me ultimately I would be surprised if Robert gets moved this off season as I said before it would be I think ridiculous for the white socks not to hold on to him to until the trade deadline unless they’re completely out on him unless they think he’s cooked I would hold on to him see if he can get hot for two months and then you could really yeah increase his value you know kind of like almost Tyler Maui remember uh pre-2020 the Reds decided not to trade him then they held him onto the trade deadline had a great first half and then obviously the Reds made one of probably the better trades uh they’ve ever made for Tyler Mali uh one really kind of shocking news and again you always take some of these with a grain of salt because how sincere are they but the Astros may be open to trading Kyle Tucker and framber Valdez I’m not gonna spend a whole lot of time on Valdez because pitching is not the biggest need for the Reds right now and I don’t think probably what most of what anyone wants to talk to Kyle Tucker though I tell you what if there was ever a player that Nick Kirby would be willing to blow the farm up for Kyle Tucker is at the top of the list one of the best players in the sport in my opinion yeah this I think I in a comparison to how I feel about Robert I I would actually be pretty cool with this um mostly from a production standpoint I mean you kind of hit on it but his stats last year um Mars not marginally better I would say but definitely better than Robert as far as what you’re getting back so that’s that’s kind of the the thought process that I have is just you see guys that are potentially an option either free agency or guys like Kyle Tucker it’s just like why would we give up guys for you know Luis Robert so I don’t know Tucker to me I think would be a much better option now similarly I don’t know I guess why necessarily they’re looking to get rid of him they probably won a lot in return so that’s kind of what you’re hitting on I think in the last trade too so it all has to go you know through kind of what are we losing and what are we getting back type of negotiation but I I would be much more interested in Kyle Tucker if if available and if it’s not you know crazy ask yeah he’s only got one year left before he is a free agent um normally this is the kind of move that I’m against um trading for guys that are one-year rentals that you have to give up a bunch of prospects for but here’s what id say about Kyle Tucker if the Reds believe people are gonna like this but I’m gonna say if the Reds believe they have no chance of extending ell day La Cruz I’m open to kind of going for it this year with Kyle Tucker if you think you can s if you think you can extend Deli deor Cruz then I think playing the long game is the better option and not blowing up your farm but Kyle Tucker’s the one again he’s one of the very very few players that I’d be willing to go all out for I mean this guy has a career 139 WRC plus been 39% better than League average I mean we’re talking 2019 every year he’s been above 12 one of the most consistent hitters he’s had some injury concerns only played 78 games last year the three years before was 140 150 157 actually go year before was 58 in in 2020 so that’s a full season in itself um but man I love Kyle Tucker I would be shocked if the Reds were able to land him just because you know I think this is maybe the Astros just saying hey make your deals if someone really blows us away and we know we’re probably going to lose Tucker after next season we we’ll go ahead and entertain it but I I doubt not only the Reds I doubt anyone gives up enough for him but again I just have to say I love this guy yeah and that’s an interesting thought I didn’t really think about you know obviously love to hold on to prospects but if your window is this window of the next couple years you know basically when Ellie leaves then maybe you do get rid of a couple of those guys that don’t factor into the immediate plans anyway but it’ll be interesting yeah um couple other you know news I I know I I’ve not been the high guy on Santander by any any means doesn’t sound like he’s one of the a likely candidate for the Reds I reported today that Santander’s top three appear to be the Blue Jays Red Sox in Yankees I don’t think this is much of a surprise always kind of thought Santan there was a long shot this doesn’t necessarily mean the reds are out but again especially when you see a team like the Yankees not get one Soo it’s G to be really hard to compete with them on a player that they want and I think s tand there is probably the easiest pivot for them yeah especially if you look at the Yankees and I mean they just were in the running to spend about $700 million on a player and that kind of just uh got freed up in their bank account so to speak but yeah I like I think we’re on the same page of that I just don’t see the Reds out bidding any of those kind of teams and honestly I I don’t know if I’d even want them to just with what it would mean kind of for their payroll down the line and that’s a whole discussion we can get into of kind of how I think the baseball system is kind of getting broken in that regard but um I don’t know I just don’t see that in the card so I don’t think it’s worth entertaining too much unfortunately yeah yeah I’m with you on that um Blue Jays have a lot of money too I don’t think a lot of people realize how much money the Blue Jays have they’ve been one of the higher Spenders across baseball now they haven’t always spent the wisest um but they do have a lot of money and a lot of resources uh Charlie Golds but it’s so great to see that I know he’s no longer with the cincin inquire but still still reporting still putting out great articles put out an article today uh talking about um some comments from Red’s manager Terry frankone at the winter meetings music to my ears uh would like to make our defense better talked about um the importance of the defense improving with the with the pitching um so that was cool to see Terry fota making the rounds at the winter meetings it’s just every video I see posted on line of Terry frota doing an interview even though half of them are the exact same story that I’ve heard 20 times I I stop and watch every single one of them now I saw one with him and uh Red’s favorite sea Casey today at the winter meetings and yeah it’s just I had the same thought it’s like every time you see this guy speak one it’s night and day from David Bell no knock on the guy but he’s just not Terry Fran cona obviously and I think just from a baseball understanding aspect you gotta love Fran cona but then just stuff that he’s talking about with kind of getting the pitches ready improving the defense it’s it’s all stuff that you want to hear as a fan so they got to produce but I think you know if you’re a Reds fan you couldn’t be more happy with the guy that we got you know at the helm now all right I got two minutes and 30 seconds on the countdown clock shout out to ESPN for putting a clock on here uh to start the second half that makes it a lot easier for me um so last kind of topic and we’ll wrap this up this will be short and sweet you know we’re just going on live during halftime uh there was two brand new episodes of Chatterbox Reds on YouTube uh so if you’re looking for something else to watch uh there’s two brand new ones um that were posted today and again we’ll be back at 5:30 uh tomorrow for the draft Lottery uh Michael korto Tyler O’Neal they’re officially off the board as of this weekend um who’s left santand T Oscar Hernandez profar Kepler Bader Verdugo Winker H Kahana Margo Austin Hayes plenty more uh Austin uh your top Target uh left if the Reds went the free agent route would be it’s a good question I I really see them going with kind of a middle tier guy almost even someone like an Alex Verdugo that’s gonna have to kind of prove themselves and get themselves kind of you know had a rough year last year come back I don’t know if he’s my top pick I I could really I would like to see Austin Hayes or somebody like that too so I don’t have one answer but I’ll give you guys both those Verdugo and Hayes is guys that I could realistically see and guys that I’d be pretty happy with they brought in too yeah I would say uh Kepler and Hayes I think would be would be mine um Kepler I think has some upside and his floor is a really really good defensive player which I would love to see that so if the Reds go the free agent route I think that would make sense I’m starting to think this probably more likely the Reds go uh the trade route but we’ll see you know again plenty of uh um plenty of offseason left so we’ll kind of see where things um go uh I’m not against thosar Hernandez I think he’s his price is gonna end up being too much for the Reds but the Dodger signing conforto that’s the first time I felt a little bit more optimistic about Hernandez because if the Dodgers are not part of it which I still shouldn’t rule them out on anything ever cuz he could still add another one he thought that was the favorite right for him that makes me think it maybe it would be a little bit more possible um but we’ll see all right well that’s it Austin that was fast and furious uh Bengals second half’s about to start if you are on this stream you’re going to be redirected to Chatterbox Bengals as soon as I hit end on this stream uh Jacob tissit does a great job um watching and and following along the Bengals game um so be sure to check that out as mentioned 5 :30 tomorrow uh MLB draft lottery I’ll be live with Kay Snowden um running through uh we watching that see what happens talking whatever happens throughout the day and then 900 PM Wednesday night full show with with Craig sandin of course if something happens I’ll be on live as soon as possible uh with that all right well have a uh fantastic rest of your night please support Chatterbox Bengals go Reds and you know what even for you Bengals fans who H day [Music]
