we got multiple free agency updates on the Toronto Blue Jays front and most notably for Corbin Burns who is still yet to sign one of the biggest prizes of the free agency class in 2024 heading into 2025 we were expecting a signature couple of weeks ago and it’s still yet to materialize for him so blue jays are still in on it and the longer it drags out the better you think their chances are of acquiring his services so I’ll break that down and much more on this episode of Jay’s Digest welcome in everybody to Jay’s digest I’m your host Peter fonus alongside host Nick Goss and uh before we get into the video merry Christmas and happy holidays to each and every one of you the the daily content is not going to stop so shout out to you guys for all the support and don’t stop her right there we had a goal to hit 15,000 subscribers Before Christmas Day feels a little bit lofty at this point because we’re more than uh 280 away or so something like that uh so I mean if you guys could go crazy on this video and help us get to 15,000 it mean the world to Nick and I but let’s push it back to the new year we we’ll give it a little bit of leadway here so thank you guys and make sure to enjoy all the time with the family with you and yours and take advantage of these moments because life’s precious and the holiday is always it’s always the best time of year at least for me I don’t know about you Nick but a lot to dive into um and the one thing we do have to acknowledge that these uh GMS and uh president of baseball operations they are humans as well they are not robots as we like to portray them as sometimes but uh you got to believe that the transactions will at least be put on hold for the next couple of days at least you’d hope so right I I mean these guys are crazy I wouldn’t put it past them to make any transactions in the next couple of days but Corb Corbin Burns he’s the big name that still hasn’t signed yet Nick and the Blue Jays are still in on him at least all the signs are point into that yeah had a couple of uh day before Christmas Eve reports to go over and let’s just start within happy holidays everybody but so Jim Bowen came out and said what he’s hearing about Corin Burns we also have a couple other things there’s a lot to go over today but we’ll start with this the most likely Landing spots right now for burns are the Jays and the Giants with the Red Sox and or still possibilities and I think he’ll sign with whoever offers the most years and dollars and the Red Sox GM basically came out and said he’s pretty happy with his current rotation they obviously signed walker buer uh yesterday so they’re pretty locked down so it really leaves the Giants and the Jays and it’s good to see that the Js are still all in on Corbin Burns and we’re starting to hear some reports about what their offer is as well and we also have Mark finson who uh spoke out yesterday night on the MLB Network and he basically said Burns wants the Steven strawber deal which is around 245 million Giants offer was well below unsure if they’ll go up Jays are very interested but will they go to seven years on a pitcher is the question of the of the day here and you have some people from you know Giants reporters basically saying that buster posie doesn’t decide the payroll it’s ownership there’s clearly something that the ownership is holding them down on to go over the $200 million threshold Boris told me outright when I asked the winner meetings it’s in the owner’s hands so Peter a lot of stuff coming out here he wants about 245 million over seven years the Jays are in on him the question is whether or not the Jays will be able to push themselves up to that deal I mean if that’s what gets the deal done and again the report came out that he’s willing to take whoever offers the most years and dollars I would just give him the extra money at this point not that I’m super I don’t know if it’s going to age great even though I do think he’s probably he is the best starting pitcher remaining and probably the best in this class aside from debatably you know the upside of Roki saki but this would be a very good pickup for the Jays and as you see the AL is completely revamped from the Yankees completely revamped the Red Sox getting way better all these different teams the Jays have to do something and I think this would be the first step and if they can get it done by offering you know 20 or 30 more than their current offer I would go ahead and do it yeah I would do it too and the Jays are in a very bad spot as it stands right now because you hit the nail on the head there Nick the Red Sox significantly better and the Yankees and Orioles were already better than the Jays and they made Moves this off season I mean the Orioles acquired uh Tyler O’Neal and you had the the Yankees who lost Juan stto but I think they got better as an overall team their rotation got better their Bullpen got better with the addition of Devin Williams and they they’re signing Paul goldshmid who had a really good second half last year it’s not going to replace the offensive production of juano but these teams are all making significant strides this off season and I can’t say that the Blue Jays are even marginally better than they were a season ago sure they got andrees Jimenez and I think he’s a better player than Spencer Horwitz yeah in theory they have B bashet back and healthy but will he be able to stay healthy that that’s a question mark in itself so this doesn’t solve all the blue jay’s problems but you’re looking at the teams they have holes they filled those holes already but then they’re adding Surplus on top of that the the Red Sox didn’t need two starters but they traded for Garrett crochet and they signed Walker BU as an insurance policy in a sense they’re just getting significantly better the Yankees too I think they’re so much better so as it stands right now uh the Jays are the fourth best team in the division and depending on what the Rays do if they do anything which is doubtful but if they do something the Jays could potentially be the worst team in the division so it’s looking Bleak as of now and the Blue Jays need to make some serious moves and if it starts with Corbin Burns I mean that’s that’s a pretty good start right there but you look at all these teams they’re not stopping after one move they’re making significant moves after move after move and that’s why they’re moving the needle that’s why they’re getting significantly better as teams and the Blue Jays are lagging behind mind yeah it’s a little bit concerning though luckily there it’s not at the point last year there were no free agents left there are still a lot left Corin bur tarz Anthony send there there’s still a lot of guys left but to think and to have trust in the Jays to even Alex bregman is left as well and teams that were going to go for a lot of these guys are starting to fall off the board a little bit here whether that’s the Red Sox with Corbin Burns whether that’s the Astros they’re reportedly out on Alex bregman things are falling into place I’m not saying I’d love an Alex bregman contract but things are falling into place for the Jays to actually make a make a splash here and we have some you know other rumors and reports circling around take this with u I’m going to say it it’s it’s the holiday season take it with a grain of salt but the Blue Jays seem to be throwing around some cash for someone to take this winter rumors of a massive offer to Burns in the mid 200 seven years making INF pacful push for tcar also say they’re trying to get Ryan Hy and Steven mats which would be pretty hilarious that’s from a cardinal Insider there Insider um it’s interesting because whether or not they get Corbin Burns I don’t think that’s the BL all end all I think it’s really a matter of I mean Peter you’ve been talking about Shawn manah he is now off the board as well he is with the New York contract threeyear $75 million deal $25 million a so if they don’t get burns the options are I mean Nick Peta is still available we’ve heard the Jays are linked to them but or to him sorry they uh I think the most realistic outcome here is a tasa Hernandez maybe and a Alex bregman or something like that I have a feeling that something like that is going to happen which would be good I’d be fine with it but they need to do something and the time is kind of running out like all these moves are happening there are a couple guys the Jays could have got Jack Peterson’s another one that signed that the Jays could have made a push for but they clearly have their mind set on their confidence level in attaining one of these guys whether that’s burns bregman or I think they’re going to get one of send there or tasar Hernandez I think that’s pretty I’m not going to say a given because I don’t want to jinx it but I think that’s pretty likely at this point but it’s really what they do after that because I don’t think one of those guys is enough that’s wishful thinking Nick the way that that the last couple of off seasons have gone and I hope you’re right I truly hope that you’re right but I I find it hard to Envision a scenario where they just spend a boatload of money and that would be the largest contract in the history in the Blue Jays history uh if they were to give that out to Corbin Burns I don’t know if they’re willing to make that kind of risk but the the game is moving in a direction now where you need to take these kinds of chances and you need to spend this amount of money because you have the Washington Nationals trading for um Nathaniel was it Nathaniel low or or somebody yeah they traded for Nathaniel low super random by the way super random it makes sense for yeah it makes sense for the Texas Rangers because they acquired Jake Burger who’s probably going to play first base for them but look at the Rangers they’re making moves they missed the playoffs they spent a lot of money and they try to um they won a World Series so the job is sort of done but they’re not not satisfied they want to be able to compete in a we can say it a weaker um a weaker League than the national league the American League is a lot more wide open than the than the NL is and with the moves that the Mets are making and the Dodgers it’s going to be tough to compete in a league like that but you don’t have to go through those through those guys unless you make it to the World Series and the way that the last decade or so has gone I’d be thrilled with a World Series appearance uh even if you you go there and lose give me a playoff win I I’ll start with that and then we yeah we start with that go further but that’ll wrap it up let us know what your thoughts are I have a suspicion that Jays are going to make a move here soon maybe it’s today on Christmas Eve but either way hopefully Ross Atkins can make us a little bit happier but at the very least hope you guys have a great holiday we’ll have a video for you guys tomorrow either way but make sure to tune to that thank you guys for watching make sure to hit that subscribe button see you later
