[Music] welcome to eyeball I’m Amino hassin and as you can see I’m no longer in Sin City that’s right the magical technology of Redeye flights Las Vegas last night Miami this morning but I’m happy to be here because I’m here with my buddy 10day Tony Tony kud who’s filling in welcome to the show Tony we had an NBA Cup Final last night and the Bucks beat the Thunder 9781 which is not a like that’s not what any of us expect this is not a 2024 NBA score yeah first of all the score is low second of all if any if I told you yesterday hey it’s gonna be 9781 I would I would say that the the Thunder choked out absolutely the Bucks and there was nothing there that they could do and yet that’s why they play the games ladies and gentlemen you see Yannis sedmo MVP honors last night 26 points 19 rebounds 10 assists in that game and oh look there he is he’s all happy with his trophies that’s cute all right and and I don’t know if you know this Tony but Darin ham assistant coach at the Bucs torian Prince both of these guys are now 14-0 all time in NBA cup play they are the definitive goats of NBA Cup oh there’s a picture of them right there wow there’s Legend Darin on the right and there’s torian Prince on the left 15 and so I I want to ask you first like what were your takeaways in the game because one of the things that really stood out to me was all right the Bucks defense that we’ve kind of killed all year long they kind of defended the hell out of the Thunder who are one of the the best teams in the league and Giannis was able to kind of get whatever he wanted right like he talks about playing behind the wall teams set up a wall to try to get him to stop going into paint and it felt like every time he touched the ball he was spin moving on the Baseline either dunking it getting an an one like he was living in the paint last night it’s crazy like everyone talks about on their Scouting Report don’t let Jan’s getting transition no we got to you know Build That Wall Stop Those easy transition buckets and I’m watching last night and there are like plays where all 10 players are on this side of the the half like a half court set already yeah and and Yan’s like nah this is still a transition and he gets to the bucket and you know the Thunders tried so many different things they tried putting l Dort on him Alex Gro Isaiah hartstein like everyone kind of took turns and all of them I know today are like with ice packs all over him because this dude Giannis is physical he’s bumping and grinding the whole time and the thing it reminded me of I remember way back in a day I used to work with Mark West the longtime NBA vet and I asked him what was the hardest thing about guarding hakee elij Jo M and I exactly and I thought he was going to say like the quickness or something like that like no man what it was is strong no one realized how strong he was and the first thing he would do when he caught is he’d hit you and that hit would kind of like momentarily paralyze you as you cinch up and now when he starts going into stuff you’re still trying to recover and get your feeling back and he’s this way now you’re this way now he’s coming back that way and that’s what makes it so hard that’s why he said Joe Klein was the guy that guarded him the best because Joe Klein was strong too just take that hit like okay and thene does stuff and Joe Klein was so slow he wasn’t reacting anyway so he would get to the third move and he and he’s back he’s back where Joe Klein was originally so there’s a lot of that going on watching Giannis uh but I think the Bucks defense really deserves a whole lot of credit because this is something like I said we killed them all year long they they had a a really great strategy they had Andre Jackson Jr Guard sgaa full court kind of pick him up and to me like that’s there’s Signs of Life there that I think we we hadn’t considered before the NBA cup started it feels like they’re all the way back right like from their their start to where they are now you can qualify this and be like I don’t know if they’re playing bet if they can play better basketball than what they’re playing right now it was a I don’t know if we can say this is it is it time enough has enough time passed where we can say this was a y a vintage Yannis jannis performance this was a vintage Giannis performance for sure it was like he I correct me if I’m wrong he didn’t take a three yes he took a couple of mid-range shots that he made a couple that he missed but like everything was focused going to the hoop and I’m going to make them pay now now let me ask you something else so the Thunder shot very poorly from thr terribly and particularly on ones that they were uncontested what they shoot two of 22 on uncontested shots is there anything there that you saw in the Thunder that gives you kind of like structurally like is this are we getting a little ahead of ourselves when we say this is the best team in the NBA I mean I feel like they’re the best team right now just on paper right but they build I wanted to ask you is as far as team building their build is a little weird right where they’re not built to play teams like this that have the strength that have the size inside because you got hartenstein right who’s who’s been incredible when he’s in the lineup with the Thunder I think if they have a true Center that plays I think I heard uh or saw something on Twitter they’re 17- two when they have a true Center that plays either hartenstein or Chad hren but that’s kind of their only big so you don’t have anybody else so this is the issue by the way this game was the only the third time all season that they Trail by 14 no more which is insane right like they’re they’re basically in every game or beating the hell out of their opponent but to to your question when they started the season on paper they had was T hren Isaiah haride and the other Jaylen Williams who got injured in preseason with the hamstring has not played a game so like they might have said hey those three guys those are our true bigs and then Lou Dort is a guy who’s kind of plays bigger than he is he’s like the Josh har or whatever Alex Caruso is the guy who plays bigger than he is everywhere defensively too Jaylen Williams the other Jaylen Williams the wing Jaylen Williams SGA these are also guys that are you know they’re they’re periment players but they’re tall they get boards and all that stuff so I think they went in thinking yeah I think we got enough and then two of your three bigs get hurt for and remember hartstein started the season hurt as well so they’ve only had kind of like one big this entire time this entire season so I think that definitely is an issue but at the same time they are one of the worst teams in the NBA Defensive rebounding and my preview for the game uh on Monday was look I’m worried about their ability for with Sid against the Bucks who are big with Giannis with Brook Lopez with Bobby poris com on Off the Bench and sure enough that’s what happened now uh I got a theory a lot of people follow this Theory which is you gotta got to go through your lumps before you can kind of get to the promised land and usually you know in the history of the NBA those lumps happen in the postseason the playoffs you go and you lose tough series and that kind of is The Learning Experience the eye opener yep for you to build to Greatness eventually does this count as one of those lumps uh in a small way right cuz this was a national stage this was Island game right nobody there nobody else was playing all eyes were on you you don’t have a Christmas game if your OKC y you’ve been perpetually just kind of pushed aside as a little brother post big three yeah of KD of Russ and of and of Harden and it’s like you have all these picks you get all these players now you have a fun team a young team but like you don’t have that love from the national like fan bases which is what’s what’s weird about especially with such great players the lump I feel like was last year too when they lost to the Mavericks got just destroyed by the Mavericks inside also with size also size also size so it’s like you start looking at the blueprint and you’re like this this feels like it was they wanted to come out they wanted to win the NBA cup for whatever you know whether it be money which we can talk about later whether it’s Pride whether it’s money whatever it felt like this was their coming out party and it just got completely dashed a wet fart it was a super wet fart 19 to five run by the Bucks in the fourth quarter five of 32 from three dude it’s crazy I think me and you could do that I I can know I can do the two of 22 part I can definitely make two with 22 attempts all right uh let’s move on to this really weird factual error that happened from espn.com after the game so here’s Giannis after the game Talking to Malika Andrews about you know the job not being done that’s who we have that’s who we’re going to continue to be and job’s not done we have a lot of basketball in front of us and we’re going to stay like team because job is not done all right so he said it twice I heard that job’s not done right this is what the ESPN graphic from that interview said a look huh job’s done I just like the yeah job’s done job’s done that’s it you know who would never make that mistake who our producer Meg who does all of our Graphics here’s a more accurate quote graphic Meg can you can you fly that for us please there it is a job is so not done like we have so much more to do before we can even consider the job being done it is great that we won the NBA cup but the job is not done that’s how we would have done it if if if uh if metalark were the place that was broadcasting the NBA finals and then we had to do the quote board that’s what we do right there bit wordy know it’s it’s necessary though you got what you got to get the quote correct first draft also by the way not only is this more accurate but Giannis is an expert in uh knowing when things are done here’s him teaching a course on Dess yep there it is yeah see yeah not done yeah not the day me and him we are going to be great you know I’m so proud of him our chemistry is at at the best has ever been and it’s going to keep getting better with time and man we have so many games and important games ahead of us and I’m so excited to play with this guy by my side after after the semi-final he said kind of the same thing about like talking about the chemistry and all that uh I don’t know about you Tony it reminded me a lot of remember when Tom Cruz went on Oprah and he would jumped on the couch I’m in love with Katy Holmes I’m in love with Katy Holmes it remind me a lot about that and if you don’t believe me viewers well Meg may or may not have dreamt up some other uh enhanced images here that we maybe maybe created maybe didn’t yep there it is friendship bracelets okay look at giannis’s Hand by the way that’s the other thing that’s crazy big hands uh is this the best do in the Eastern Conference are we talking healthy right healthy everyone’s healthy everybody’s healthy okay I feel like I feel like Jaylen and Cat are up there I feel like obviously Tatum and brown um man healthy banero and and France Vagner not bad big but but interesting I’ll listen to it you know um they NBA champ Cleveland Cleveland sure Mo and I guess uh Mitchell yeah Donovan um I’d say from guys that have been able to to do it right it’s Tatum and brown who have been there and then it’s it’s Giannis right and he’s right now feels like the best player in the East yeah I mean like to me that that’s the hard part about this question is that Giannis is the best player out of any one of these guys that we’ve named singular singular best player singular best player in the e conference might be the best player in the league this year between him and yic and you know usual suspects SGA but he’s up there but then Dame who I love but I would put behind almost every player that we’ve named I put him behind Jaylen Brown at this point I put him behind uh um uh uh banero I put him behind Brunson and cat um and and part of that is because he’s in in a still in a weird situation whatever but that’s the thing like are we talking about the average of these two guys or what are we talking about when we say the best du that’s the thing that makes these questions kind of hard is it too like how they play with each other right cuz they’re they’re trying to figure out and it’s been what what game are we in like 25 or something yeah like we’re we’re they’re still trying to figure out oh you’re going to do this on the court so I’m gonna do that right like and it feels like a lot of those other Duos kind of have their sync whereby Dame and and Giannis are still trying to get there uh they’re but they’re getting there they’re getting there I I think that’s important just took 25 games to like figure it out plus whatever happened last year 202 all right so this marks the end of the second iteration of the NBA cup uh there’s a lot of questions in the air right one of them is are they gonna play this in Vegas next year there’s a lot of people I know Marcus Thompson wrote about this for the athletic like that’s not set in stone not even close there is that is certainly an open conversation as to where they’re going to play next year um well you were there how was it because from the TV from from me watching yeah it felt just like a waiting room just people were just kind of sitting there I didn’t hear any cheers like it just felt very antiseptic the whole thing I I think here’s the thing it was antiseptic like so the semifinals for when the Hawks played it had energy in the crowd because Dirty Little Secret though right yes and the Falcons were playing the Raiders in Oak and excuse me Las Vegas on Monday Night Football so you had a bunch of Atlanta people who were already in town like oh the HW playing yeah well well I think a lot of them we just planning on going to the Falcons game but then they realized well hell the Hawks are in town let’s go to that game too and so you heard that energy in the crowd on Saturday night Tuesday it was you know two teams that really don’t have a great geographical kind of connection to the area so then the next part of that is who was in the crowd it’s not fans it’s a lot of corporate people reminds me a lot of the All-Star Game these are people who have connections these are people who have money these are people who are just here for the spectacle they’re not like going crazy for either one of these teams for the most part so you got that kind of weird polite crowd and so I don’t know I look I one of the things I’m thinking about is should first of all should we be playing two rounds in Vegas versus the championship I think a semi at a home court of the team would be the buzz would be insane right imagine that Houston Rockets versus Thunder uh Oklahoma City Thunder game in OKC all of a sudden the place is a mad house right Y in a way that when you’re in Vegas it’s like uh it’s okay but but having those semis at home and then maybe a rotational championship game where it could be you know uh in the garden or it could be here it could be there people can can travel to it with enough time given yeah I think like really quick right someone mentioned that like the idea of let’s put the final like in January let’s like everything leading up to like we know the two final teams and then give it like a month just so that fans have an opportunity to make travel plans and all that the Counterpoint I would say is like look the final four every year nobody knows where who’s going to be in it right but we sell the tickets sell out nonetheless because it’s a thing and and part of this NBA cup thing is like we just got to keep doing it until people just kind of accept that this is a thing the the last thing I want to say uh before we move uh go to break is I don’t know I walked away this weekend like I don’t know if I want a an NBA team in Vegas and here’s why I went to that Raiders Falcons game on Monday Night Football there were a lot of Falcons pants man there were like red shirts every there were red shirts in the black hole damn you know what bad that’s really B that’s supposed to be like their fan crazy section right so I’m sitting with some season tick hold say is it like this every home game and they’re like yeah every every home game every Sunday it’s like this because people like oh it’s in Vegas well F will’ll make a weekend out of it and they come here and it’s just like there’s not a lot of homebased support or if there is people are just more willing to sell their tickets than actually go to the game and so while the team might say look our financials are doing great we’re selling tickets we’re selling concessions whatever that’s not the I don’t the vi just isn’t right the vibe isn’t right and I’m like is that is it worth it that to make money if every player knows hey if I play for Vegas we’re not going to have a whole an away game every single time we play at home at best it’s a neutral game like last night where nobody cares or no one everyone’s kind of polite at worst it’s an away game Counterpoint though Vegas golden knights came in kicked ass their first couple Seasons like make it made it to a Stanley Cup and I feel like people are DieHard golden knights fans in Vegas like the true Vegas people rep it super hard so it feels like that the the idea the concept Works two things one they were instantly good right they went to the Stanley Cup their second year and two all right we haven’t seen them be trash yet like let’s see what it looks like when they get trash I do want to talk about one thing as far as like every NBA team has a problem of like hey are we pricing the real fans out is everyone here just a rich person wants to be on their phone and and and kind of be cool at the game and and I remember way back in the day when they had the lockout in 99 when they came back the NBA instituted rule that every team has to have like a port an allotment of $10 seats M and they had in every arena for every game and it was it wasn’t big and it wasn’t great seats but it was it was something they were now they were doing it to try to apologize to fans for the work stoppage but I I’m proposing we bring it back to kind of bring some energy in the building like give them like hey the $10 seats comes with like a dollar hot dog and soda $1 like a voucher where and so it’s affordable for a family it’s affordable for people with less means but then we’re subsidizing them and their night out but then they subsidize us with the energy that the rich folk don’t bring right I mean that that goes to a broader thing right like to take a family of four to a game anywhere now is hundreds of dollars when you talk about parking when you talk about tickets when you talk about concessions you talk about merch you talk about whatever it is yeah it feels like it’s just so out of pocket for families that maybe only go to one game a year two games a year that they can scrape by but it’s like how do you how do you lessen that blow but still make money on the back end right like that’s the dance of of the fan and the ownership I I think it’s it’s definitely a conversation that’s worth having all right I came back from Vegas but I did not lose my gambling ways we’re going to play Papa slot [Music] next all you hear it right you hear the machine trade machine is active we got Dennis shudder has already been traded we’ve got Thomas Bryant got traded from the heat to the Pacers we’ve got Jimmy Butler rumors flying around and the latest thing we have is the nuggets are reportedly targeting Zack LaVine of the Chicago Bulls now the deal would likely have to include Michael Porter Jr um first blush what do you think of that fit Zack LaVine with the Nuggets I don’t hate it it’s another guy who can who can create his own shot Murray’s been struggling this year and doing that um it just feels like subtraction by addition right where in the sense of like the way yic plays you need good perimeter Shooters and mpj is one of their better perimeter Shooters you’re getting rid of him to then bring in another perimeter shooter when instead of like reducing your Shooters you need more Shooters so it’s like swapping one for one just not as not as good so yeah so I think the the concerns I have one is I get it cuz mpj is kind of inconsistent and he’s on on the books for a while and Zack LaVine a couple years ago everyone was like who wants that contract well now it’s getting shorter and shorter so it looks better and better it looks better and better you give him a chance to come in here and and like you said he creates his own shot which we know has been an issue for Denver Nuggets number one offense all time in the NBA history when joic plays when he doesn’t play bottom 10 offense in the history of the NBA so cra not when he plays excuse me when he’s on the floor like him him sitting out so there’s a level there where it’s like we need someone else who can do this but at the end of the day I feel kind of like this is rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic like okay now you’re sitting up front it doesn’t matter the ship is going down so to speak and the other thing I wonder about is like if look both of these guys have their issues they’re both talented offensive players and they both defensively leave a lot to be desired but all else being equal when you talk about things I’d rather have the bigger guy defensively you’re saying sizewise sizewise just give me give me give me a tall guy who doesn’t defend over a shorter guy who doesn’t defend right and and that’s that’s something I think is worth mentioning I know there are a lot of other names have been connected to Denver some of them like Brandon Ingram Jordan P Jordan Clarkson etc etc all look at all what they are Shooters scorers yeah cam Johnson’s another one for the brook I feel like everybody wants Dorian FIA Smith is a guy that I’m like if I’m in the if I’m one of these teams I’m looking for help he’s one of the guys all right let’s play propad all right propad is presented by Draft Kings stay tuned the Counterpoint is like I don’t know if he’s going to be too emotional right and also Minnesota has played a lot better defense since uh Anthony Edwards called them out earlier so how do we feel do we do we want to stick with this one or do we spin again I’m always a sucker for a spin again though you know what spin it again let’s see also Carl gets in foul trouble all the time man he does but 25 points I he’s averaging 25 he can have a one of those games all right here we go we got Steph Curry Under on assist that’s five and under five and a half assists minus 135 so the Warriors are visiting Memphis on Thursday night Kerr said that the Warriors traded for Dennis Shooters specifically to run more pick and rolls uh they had the lowest pick and roll rate in the league but historically Kerr does not like to ride run a lot of pick and rolls uh Seth will be finishing plays rather than initiating offense is 5 and a half assists too low how do you feel on the under just looking at what the what the odds are is minus 135 it’s like Vegas is expecting him to go under five and a half I mean their their offense is very weird they have a weird offense because when you talk about historically bad teams it feels like the Warriors are on track to being a historically bad offensive team when Steph is not in the lineup yeah right because you look around pensi is like he’s not what he was last year like who is this guy kinga’s good but what is he averaging 13 15 16 points a game inconsistent guy like who else do they have on that team Draymond we know he not going to be an offensive Force like it feels like they don’t have enough bucket Getters for Steph to go out and be that facilitator and yet I think we can we might do it let me just take a look at this this was uh Dennis Shooter’s kid’s reaction to him getting traded to the Warriors we’re lucky now it’s a good team at least and this is from a six-year old you know what damn I’m G I’m gonna sit on this one
