Miss Timberwolves played the Boston Celtics in a highly entertaining game on Sunday afternoon um they were behind by seven or eight points in the fourth quarter came back and actually had the ball with a chance to tie or win in the last five seconds and there was a little hot potato going on they didn’t get a shot off um a frustrating way for the game to end um but they have now lost I believe five out of seven games um and they have fallen to eight and eight which in the East would be uh great position but in the Western Conference um is a little bit concerning for a team that um you know was basically essentially tied for the best record in the west last year I know they ended up with the 3C but they were essentially tied um and had high expectations this year after the Julius Randall trade and they’re just spinning their wheels a little bit I guess you could argue I know you just spent some time there McMahon I guess you could argue that Sunday was a step forward considering they had two losses to the Blazers in this stretch and they lost in Toronto uh on last Thursday I guess this is a step forward because they took the Celtics to the wire but um not where this team wanted to be at this point I I’m not going to sit here and uh celebrate a loss by a team that was in the Conference finals last year and had Ambitions of of building on that um I am going to say that their performance in Boston and they were down double figures in the third quarter you know the fact that they came back in that game they competed they stayed together I’m going to say that is evidence that this whole thing is not completely falling apart which given what we saw late in that game against Toronto like there were legitimate concerns about um the spirit of the uh of the Timberwolves and it was an interesting situation um but I don’t know what four or five minutes left in that game they’re they’re tied 95 95 against the Raptors which that’s not a great place to be in regardless but uh Rudy goar gets a deep seal on Scotty Barnes you know basically has Barnes kind of pinned under the rim calls for the ball Randall you know playing with his dribble out top and Randall ignores him goar stands there Randall ignores him goar stages a bit of a silent protest and takes his sweet time getting out of the paint so site that it was a 3 second violation and then takes a a frustration foul on the other end you know ants barking at them and it it was a bad look and it was also kind of one of the the weird things of modern day media and budgets and all that there wasn’t any Minnesota media at the game so nothing got addressed publicly until practice on Saturday in Boston so it’s just kind of like lingering and floating now after that practice uh goar basically owned it and said hey that that was that was not good by me you know paraphrasing pride of myself I’m being a good teammate that was a that was a bad example um Randall owned it he came over to the media and said I didn’t throw him theing ball what else you wanted him you know in a joking way with basically saying hey I we got to address this I know they both said they didn’t have any issues with each other but that was a like God it was a bad chemistry yeah to point just to add something to it it was as you mentioned it was a tie game with five minutes to go and after that happened you had goar you know staring down Randall cost him a possession yet had ant barking at goar and they allowed an 11 to one run which basically ended the game they they fell apart and it was one of those situations where nobody was right should Randall have thrown the ball I think you can argue he should have now you know hey is goar going to catch turn and finish over Scotty Barnes are you certain of that I don’t know but I think youve got I don’t know he was pretty in that particular moment he was pretty deeply sealed he probably he had him pretty well buried I think you’ve got there but the time it is possible that the play call was for Randall ISO there sure and and and okay so could was random probably in the wrong sure was goar in the wronger if that’s a word yes the time to Stage a protest is not tie game costing your team a turnover and creating a scene you know late in in a road game when your team’s been struggling so goar owned that but he was absolutely wrong you know and I don’t know I don’t know was it wrong of him to jump on goar in that moment I’m not sure it was but it was just a bad look for the whole team well I don’t know if you saw but the first play of the game on Sunday in Boston um Chris Finch called the play to have Randall feed go be in the post yeah and there was and and they had said hey we talked it out no hard feelings you know they both owned it they moved on that was kind of a way of saying they moved on and again the fact that it was a loss so let’s not like there’s no moral victories for a team that considers itself Contender but they had it certainly down whatever was 15 17 whatever was in the third quarter there could have been some melee in against the defending champs and there was I know what Bon is gonna say here I’m just gonna I’m just GNA close my eyes and wait for him to say because I have a pretty good idea what he’s gonna say well uh I don’t know what you think I’m GNA say but I’m gonna I have something ready to say which is that like our long discussion the other day about the Sixers I don’t really care about any discussions along these lines when it comes to what was the reaction to this one play in this game on Friday and the psycho analysis of it I would say well all all what you guys said was I think very accurate the bottom line with the Minnesota Timberwolves is last season you guys know where the Minnesota ranked on defense first number one number one by a decent margin by two by just over two points over the Celtics you want to know where the guy where the Minesota Timberwolves ranked this year on defense they ranked 15th I thought you were gonna say that that Mike con missing Mike Conley is messing them up but that’s well that too oh we will get to Mike Connelly um they are they are four points per 100 worse on defense than last year their offense is actually half the point worse on uh than it was last year when they were a mid-pack offensive team but they were a team that won on their defense and if you look at the individual onoff Court numbers which again there’s there’s some noise in these potentially but Rudy go bear is on the court they have an offense they have a defensive rating of 107.9 when he’s off they have a defensive rating of 114.3 and when you look at both from jadeen McDaniels to Julius Randall to NAS Reed when all those guys are on the court the defense is four five six points worse than when they’re on the bench and at the end of the day not having cat it’s a struggle not having cat size in the second unit they’re very small now in the second unit well right I mean that that’s part of it but as we’ve seen this year CAD is also not exactly a defensive stopper so well I don’t disagree with your point on that and and it is it is a different thing because they are smaller at the end of the day if these guys are going to be the team that they hope to be they’re still not an offensive Juggernaut by any by any stretch even with the moves they made because and they they’re gonna have to be far better on defense and the other thing to Brian’s point I know Mike Conley did not play today but Mike Connelly is shooting 32% on twos and he’s shooting 33% from the three-point line if Mike Connelly is not going to be the impact player he’s been since he arrived to Minnesota I don’t see how this team is going to recreate what they did last year because we have talked about it a lot the moment things changed for Minnesota was when D’Angelo Russell was taken out of the out of the organization and Mike connley was put in and if he’s going to play at this level obviously he didn’t play today Rob Dillingham had probably his best game of the season so far um but still if he’s going to be struggling like this that’s going to be very diff difficult for the timber rols to overcome because then their offense just becomes ant dribbling the air out of the ball and Julius Randle dribbling the air out of the ball and taking turns doing it and that’s just not going to be good enough for this team to be a Conference Finals or finals team which is what even at I mean they certainly didn’t make the cat trade thinking they were going to take a step back they were repositioning their team a little bit but they got two very good players back the goal was to still be competitive and they’re sitting at 500 and the defense in particular has taken a massive step back here’s what’s interesting there we I’ve got a whole packet of information here and I won’t go over all of it because it’s really granular where their defense well their defense is bad in two areas one is in transition but the other is they’re getting crushed in the paint the uh the paint scoring that they’re allowing is 25th in the league coming into the weekend I don’t have the updated numbers but coming into the weekend they were 25th in the league in uh in in paint defense so obviously they’re 15th and overall they’re worse on the interior they got the four-time MVP protecting the paint so I’d have to be I’d have to have a long conversation with Timberwolves coaching staff or somebody in the in their on their organization to educate me why they think that number is there but it does support the theory that not having towns in there is negatively affecting them um even though towns is not a strong um individual Defender I do think he did like McMahon said I do think they found a spot last year with him where he was good I mean one of the crazy numbers that I found when Bon Temps and I wrote about towns two weeks ago in our weekly column was how good towns’ numbers were when he was on the court with nas Reed when they had he he and Nas Reed on the court together they were actually better defensively than their team average that was number one in the year and again I’m not I’m not in tune enough with the Timberwolves as you know I can’t watch a lot of their games because I’m blacked out um I would need to really talk to some Scouts to to be able to to to say that a simple part of it is they were they were matching up against second units that’s a you know but they were fairing very well against those second units right right other thing I’ll say is you know when they made their move when they made their move for Dante D venzo who was coming into today shooting 30 one% I think on threes I think he may be had a decent day today but he’s not been shooting well they wanted to get their three-point uh numbers up because last year even though they weren’t a great offensive team they they were getting outscored a lot at the three-point line so coming into this year they really as as was highly covered in the league they want ant to shoot a ton of Threes And he is shooting them very well and shooting them at a high volume and uh Devan chenzo is shooting them at a high volume um and not shooting them well but they have soared up they now have they’ve gone from 23rd in the league in three-point attempts per game to Fifth and not only that but their their percentage is pretty good I I I don’t I don’t have it updated at the second um coming into today though I think they were in the top 10 in percentage and so if I mean that was their game plan that wasn’t something that is happening by fluke like they came into the season saying this is what we want to do those are fifth in fifth in attempts and seventh in percentages after today’s actually TI for six with golden state okay so that’s exactly what they wanted like if you had if you’d have told the wolves uh in mid October that at end of November those two stats I think they would have been like well that’s exactly what we were hoping for that’s why we did the Devon chenzo trade but it hasn’t resulted in better offense and again I’d have to really dig down and speak to people in Minnesota on why that is but they’re they’re getting the the results that they want with some of their roster changes and strategy changes that not resulting in wins well I think with ant the the three-point volume is way up way down is the volume at The Rim uh and he’s gone a couple years ago 30% of his shots came within three feet of the rim that’s down to 16% now wow that’s good it went from 29 and a half 22.8 15.9 and [Music] [Music] for foreign spee spee tell yell for it spee speech speech I’m for spee speech [Music] [Music] for foreign spee spee hey know one spe spee foreign foree fore for for for come much on you
