what you what you want is you want you want all the young people across the state to grow up some they dreaming of you know playing here you know playing a Memorial Stadium whether it’s in the state championship or eventually here with us so um and you know I think one of our jobs is to nurture football you know whether it’s clinics that we do youth camps that we do hosting high school games hosting all the you know smaller schools colleges in the state you know they all they come to our they come over to us and visit us watch practice you know we want to be a place that uh supports football you’re a high school now who are a part of your practices next month is that the first time I assume that’s the first time in a in a for a bowl game you’ll have ever experienced that and what what what can that look like or mean yeah um and I think we we’ll have to wait and see where where we’re going and when we are in terms of like dates that they graduate high school and all that so it’s my first time doing it I haven’t had that before I think it’s great just in the um acclamation process you know uh um you know we we want guys understand sort of the the standards that we have in terms of everything from you know being on time to how we practice and I think them getting a chance to get here early and be a part of it would be great uh if it if it you know turns out you know right with the timing of graduation and all that what’s the challenge of a of a short week and I know you guys had a flu bug going through last last week or you feel like you’re over yeah we had we had both flu and strep throat last week so it was uh it was was really kind of all hands on deck by our medical staff we still have some guys had a couple guys that tapped out today not tapped out like tapped out in the bad way like were out because of uh Strep throat uh but they were mainly non-travel guys I mean like Maris Buford sier right if you could put a camera on me I kept putting my arm around him the whole game I was like just I’ll give you tomorrow off just get through this game buddy because he was playing corner he was playing Gunner he was playing Jam run punt returner he was just dying right like so um you know obviously him and Maris Buford got back but they were just not feeling great so um I think we’re much healthier this week you know the challenge of a short week obviously is just kind of you know you lose a day so you know today we went out there we practiced like it was a Tuesday tomorrow we’ll practice like it’s a Wednesday um typically I don’t do that but because of also the Thanksgiving component of this and some of the things that we’ll do later in the week um you know we’ll we’ll treat this we treat it this morning like Tuesday how much given that you now have that bowl in place how much hungry do you sense your team is to now go get another thing and win another game against you know I sure hope they are you know I mean honestly Sam we we didn’t even have a team we haven’t even had a team meeting since the game like we walked in today and it was 8 o’clock Iowa special teams there’s just no time for hey great job D there’s just no time for it right like so um this is such a condensed week versus a really difficult opponent to prepare for that um um we just jumped right in I you know I think the thing that you saw you know coming out of the game like a lot of guys were in the building yesterday you know they they know that they can do it you know it’s kind of like they know they’re capable of it um so you know let’s go let’s continue to do it that’s the expectation now what was once possible is now you know okay it’s not just hey it’s possible now we now we can do it so let’s do it and um this is an excellent team we’re facing so we have to do it at a high level is that more even is it even more pronounced offensively with like a 44473 yard output yeah I think um and and I think like I said like um the lessons of the game are the lessons of the season right like like you know we fumble the ball in the 20 yard line and if we do that against Iowa who’s plus 11 you know we’re not going to win so while people you know I think Dana’s done an amazing job let me start there but I think if you say like oh it’s a play call it’s it’s it you hear Dana on the headset the whole time he’s just talking about execution like the guys who practiced the best on Thursday last week played you know like um some guys had some false starts and some mistakes on Thursday he’s like he’s out 13 you’re in let’s go so igc got a chance to play and he made a play in the game so there’s a real focus on execution and when the guys execute the play calls so I think that was the message to the guys like hey if you execute and practice at a high level you going to have an opportunity to play in the game and then when you get in the game make the most of it and um so when we you know when we had penalties we didn’t score in those drives you know when we um when we snap the ball on third down you know we’re going on two and we snap it on one on the balls in the quarterback stand there’s nothing he can do but when we just settled down and just played you know then guys made the plays necessary to make so uh it’s kind of a blend of everything we’ve been trying to say to them all year coming to life like hey just go execute I think the thing Dana has done a great job of is like I said he’s cut things down to a degree but also he’s demanding that they execute if they want to get on the field and that’s kind of how we handle things on defense and you know I think it’s kind of now played over to offense as well he’s cut things down just amount of play kind of like I said when I first got here like he he came in and said hey let’s let’s just scale back in terms of the amount that we’re doing uh we’re still doing a lot you know still doing a lot and like like I said there’s a couple times in that game where you know we you know he was trying to find the words because you know he’s he’s had one language for for I don’t know 30 years and now all a sudden he has a completely different language and so you know coaches Co Glenn and Garrett and sat did a great job of I think sometimes helping with the words in the middle of the game but um he has a picture of what he wants it to look like and it’s it’s interesting for me it’s my first time being around there it’s very collaborative like they sit in the room together for hours upon hours upon hours and put together a game playing together so um it’s been it’s been really cool for me you know I’m always trying to learn it’s good for me to learn from how much I run offense this year compared to last year what’s challenging about it in general well um I mean they’ve always been to me like the the you know when I first learned how to run outside Zone um I go all the way back to like uh learning from like Rick kazinski who I know coached here as well he was a great dline coach but um learning from him learning from learning from coach fence you know like that’s how I first learned you know the way that I’ve always taught the Run game so I mean um they’ve always been the premier outside Zone team um counter team in the country um I think Caleb Johnson’s playing at an unbelievably high level they’ve got a veteran offensive line um you know I think coach Lester’s brought in you know they’re they’re they’re they’re doing they’re doing a lot of what you see NFL teams doing like they’re they’re they’re running the ball to the open side then checking it versus you know versus any four- we threat to you know to zap to the front side so a lot of us who’ve been in the NFL it’s you know kind of what we know and they’re doing it really really well and uh I can’t I I don’t want to under this back is fantastic I mean he makes people miss and he can burst and Go the Distance um they they’ve got really they’ve kind of done it two different ways with Sullivan out there because he was a running threat they were doing it one way uh with mcnamer out there it was a little bit different and I think that’s that’s the that’s the mark of great coaches whatever quarterback’s been out there um they’ve been able to do it you know to staying in the same scheme but whatever fits that quarterback and then now as we’re not sure who the quarterback is you know they’ve kind of had a hybrid model in between so I think they’re doing they’re doing a really good job and they’ve run some people off the field just by running the football down their throat gameth is secure kind of building on what you’re saying about being hungry but you get the sense that guys are playing a little more free and and how was the attitude in terms of you know coming off a win you’ve had coming off a win before was it any different today than it has been in the past after a win yeah um I you know Sam said hungry I didn’t say that I like I I I just think I I think um our guys all I think I don’t think there’s been a game where they weren’t like dying to win I think you know this is really hard this has been hard right and um it requires really tough people to do the stuff that we’ve been trying to do to kind of get over that hump right and when you when you lose to Indiana the way we did then you come back against Ohio State then you lose to Ohio State then you come back against UCLA then you lose to UCLA and then you know I make some changes then you lose to USC it’s only it’s only reasonable that you would either lose your confidence or start to question things right like well why are we working so hard if we’re not getting the result that we won and maybe we should be doing this that’s it’s not like I sit there and say to the guys hey don’t doubt trust you know I just it’s only you know it’s only you guys asked me if this was big for me I was like yeah this was big for me this is you know like you know I know I believe in what we do but still it’s great to have some some representation of hey it’s working here for us right now even though you see it at practice you like to see it in the game so um so I’ve never doubted their effort right in fact like last week Dan and I were talking he was like you know sometime you know it’s like a times you feel like you know maybe we’re pressing a little bit too much you know just trying to do too much and U I thought you saw a group on Saturday that was just pretty relaxed and pretty in the moment um uh offensively so I know how much the Iowa game means to our guys I mean I you know we sat there last year like I loved that group last year and walking off the field after losing on the way we lost right we picked the ball off we get a holding call we throw a pick we you know they just kind of run the clock out got makes a great run and then the field goal just gets over the goal post hey that’s a credit to coach ference in the way he does things but walking off the field their players were waving at our guys have a good Christmas you know that was painful that was really painful so I don’t doubt that our guys will be ready but none of their guys are going to be ready none of it really just comes down to football right if we false start we’re probably not going to win if we turn the ball over we’re not going to win if we can win the turnover battle we’ll have a chance to win and so if we can tackle so I think it all comes down to the preparation it’s not all these other things and that’s that’s a great thing about finally getting a bold drought over with because it’s not these these things it’s just like make this play make this kick you know John Hull if John Hole doesn’t do what he’s done the last two months of getting better and better and better as a kicker then we don’t have we have a different kicker and a different Snapper than we did at the beginning of the year and those guys have just gotten incrementally better to all of a sudden you get to a game like that and if he’s not making those field goals the game’s a lot different so this week to me that’s why you know we didn’t spend a lot of time talking about it we came out and just got right back to work because I know I was going to be they’re going to be prepared they’re going to work and we have to we have to make sure we’re in our fits on defense and we have to make sure we’re not keep continuing to give up big we’re giving up too many big plays passing right now way too many and um so we just have to make sure the football’s right but I’m sure they’ll they’ll prepare highly this week what about the weather just what would you find about your offense playing in colder conditions um you guys haven’t had conditions that are going to be this cold it’s going to be a night game obviously uh late in the year yeah you know um I don’t worry about the weather I mean we you know we we go in the mornings here to so which which uh which is great in some ways but in the spring I mean there’s plenty of days that we’re out there and there’s you know 30 mph winds and it’s you know 18 20 degrees I mean it was 22 degrees last week it was cold as could be I mean today was I’m wearing a You’ never see me wear a jacket I wear a jacket out there today like it’s cold today um where we practice you know last week you know we we were throwing it was you know 35 M hour gusts and we were throwing into the gusts you know the way way Dana does seven on seven he goes this way for half and this way for half and um so I mean our guys are tough um IA guys are tough I think I think the game will come down to football I think our guys will you know if there was maybe ice on the field or snow it might be a little different but um uh I I feel pretty good about our ability to handle the cold just because we do it in the spring and then we do it again in the fall we don’t we don’t really ever go inside unless I really need the crowd noise from the indoor okay there’s execution is there anything else that got riola in a Groove in that game on Saturday well I think um I think I he was he he had a great week I think you know coming you know the UCLA game I mean that was a it was a significant you know hit to his back and injury and so even if you go back to the USC Tuesday I was like I think he’ll be able to practice you know he didn’t practice Sunday I think he’ll be able to practice Tuesday but I think he was Ginger that whole game you know I mean um I think he was better this game just in terms of being healthy right being able to move around being able to slide in the pocket and um you know they got one pressure on us early um but after that I thought you know we’re getting the ball out of our hands um we you know he’s he was just taking completions uh taking what was there not trying to do too much um again you know playing as a freshman in the Big 10 is really really hard it requires tough people and I think Dylan’s been tough in that he’s gotten better every week and sometimes maybe everyone like the production people can’t they ask me that you can’t always maybe see it because you’re playing better people but I think Dylan’s gotten better every week in a lot of ways this week it was just really it was really easy to see because I thought he was just in complete and total control and command and and uh again another week with uh Dana I think has helped him as well that ability to get past the doubt that about the guys are naturally going to have how how important and and how heavily did the the seniors impact um way or factor in in the whole locker room um not getting weighed down by that yeah I think whether you doubt something’s going to work or not um it really comes down to whether you go out and do the work or not you know what I mean so it’s like okay I don’t know if this is going to work but I’m gon to do it anyway or I’m sure this is going to work but I’m going to do it anyway like it all comes down to at the end of the day your work output like if you’re going out there every day and you’re working on the execution of a play if you’re working working on the execution of a special teams if you’re working on your Craft um it I I I personally believe like I I don’t I haven’t had very many great players who played for me who haven’t actually had this great period where they almost like quit football or they like you know what I’m saying like everyone’s career doesn’t go to go like this like you have to go through these ups and downs and hit this point where you’re like man I don’t you know Matt mat andit Assan reic all of them came in my office said man I think I’m going to transfer coach I don’t think I’m GNA you know and then they all hung through it got weathered the storm and then came out the other side and so it just it comes down to me you’re going to feel all these different feelings and emotions but do you show up and practice do you show up and meet and so I think like GIF and Tai and Nash and MJ and Jamar even though he’s decided to come back and and Banks and neor and and Ben Hart and Ben Scott I think those guys have just continued to show up and continued to work so whereas they might doubt or they might feel all the doubt or hear all the doubt um you know they’ve just continued to do the work and the ones who haven’t haven’t played as much you know the ones who have continue to play bushen you all those guys and then all a sudden one day wakes up and you score 44 points or you you beat Wisconsin for the first time in however many years or you you kick a bunch of field goals and it’s like okay now now I believe it’s really hard to believe it’s Blind Faith right it’s hard to believe when it hasn’t worked and so when it finally works and it works for a game I’m not you know when it finally works it’s like all right but they did the work anyway and I think that’s the biggest message I have to the guys is like no matter whether you believe in it or don’t believe in it just show up and work and you know you’ll find out in the long run and so um I’m proud of those guys they’ve they’ve really uh they’ve really pushed I think the thing through in the last game CER and lynen me played a lot F fedon did not was that is that an injury related issue or is that just Hon’s preference no I think that was just uh you know Dana getting in the game and just going with those other guys um you know um I think that was just uh coach’s decision what did you like about a lot yeah well I mean you know um Nate Nate’s an excellent player uh you know he he’s you know he’s unselfish he doesn’t complain about his touches or whether you know he just if you ask him to do something Nate does it um and uh uh very steady and so when he had a chance to catch the ball I mean both times he caught the ball I mean it’s you know he he he had a great run after the catch um and then I think Luke Linden Meer you talk about a guy since the by we since Dana showed up who to me has like put his foot on the gas and accelerated like in practice I mean he’s he’s trying to put people on their backs he’s he’s trying to finish blocks and those guys are just really Dependable guys they executed a high level and um you know they earned a chance to play I mean to Thomas is the same way Thomas has all the ability to make every play he’s made some huge plays down the field he’s got a ton of talent you know he’s he’s had you know he’s had he’s had a bunch of injuries he he’s a lot like a lot of the guys I’m talking about it’s his second year playing really so forget you know the hardest thing in the world is to come in with a bunch of accolades right cuz everyone’s always asking you like you know know but but um he’s a second year playing and I think Thomas he had a great practice out there today um I think the thing with Dana is like I think a lot of people have said to me like they really enjoyed his press conference last week and just the bluntness of it well the bluntness has followed up with you know every position right like you have to go out and execute right and the guys who play the who practice the best and then get in the game and played like would fumbled that ball and you know janiran didn’t play quite as much afterwards you know just jir is not going to say much he’s just going to go out there and okay when you need me again need me and when they needed him he went in and he he did his job so um you know I think he’s Dan has brought a standard offensively that I’m not going to say we didn’t have before I just think he has the experience to kind of follow through on it in some ways that uh I think maybe good for all of us to learn from but uh you know Thomas will Thomas I’m sure will have a great role in this game and um like I said there’s not many guys who can make plays down the field the way he can uh just kind of you know continue to work on him and all those guys and again I’m I’m deferring a lot of this like I don’t tell Terence who to play at nose tackle and I’m not telling Dana and sat who to play at tight end you know I I give my two cents when if there’s something I really believe in I’ll stop to step in but um I think it’s really good that guys can go out and practice for what they want big plays in the secondary I don’t think Malcolm hardzog played a lot in the second half I know Black Hill got a lot of run there it was that on field related or did he re-aggravate something there no uh no um um yeah I’m I’m not sure the rep count Malcolm in the second half I thought you know kind of Maris was down a little bit so you know Malcolm was kind of moving to safety and and a corner but I think all those guys were just um there was nothing like in terms of like hey pull them out or anything like that I just think we just kind of rotated the guys as we went through because you know some guys got banged up and you know guys weren’t feeling great but uh Malcolm Malcolm’s out there today he’s practicing well he should be ready to go I’m sorry guys you mentioned Tommy Hill last week shut down for the year is there anybody else that’s moved on or not with you or shut down uh the rest of the season you guys you know you guys asked me about Malachi the other day Malachi you know came in and um um I hope it’s so I just didn’t want to talk about that on Thursday right I thought there was more part time of the game but um but yeah Malachi came in let us know he you know he would he would uh was going to go in the portal so obviously wish him the best one you know great great young man local guy um had some really big moments for us last year was uh was red shirting and developing and uh you know I think what we’re going to you know this year I think you know we’re going to probably end up with between 30 and 50 guys in the portal you know just uh with the roster and all things are going to have to happen so um you wish Malachi there’s I can’t say I can’t say anything but great things about Malachi and um you know obviously he’s not one that I wanted to go in the portal but I really don’t want any of them to go in the portal you know I want them all to stay here and develop it’s just the new world we’re in it’s going to be different so um in terms of anyone else uh I mean everyone’s kind of practicing with us I mean uh Tommy’s the one the one um that we just kind of shut down and and U um you know Mike is fighting through his shoulder he’s done a great job of battling through that should shoulder that limit kind of limits him a little bit um everyone else is kind of battling Maris Buford like I said battled through the sickness last week so I think everyone else is up and healthy and ready to go adorer to potentially come back play the B game is that still trending yeah Turner’s still not practicing yet like he’s still out there um Turner still out there doing the pit and rehab and they’re doing some doing some onfield stuff with us so once we get to bowl practice you know um I’m assuming Turner would be uh would be ready to go I’m assuming uh Peters you know Peters Young Center would be ready to practice some so the bow practice is going to be big for us for some of those guys who’ve been injured all year that are coming off of it but uh yeah Turner is still probably a couple weeks away I don’t want to overdo it oners but anything you haven’t worked with him before is there anything else you’ve learned just working with him about him about the way he goes about things anything yeah you know um he’s just methodical you know it’s like uh you know I always knew when we played we played my first year at Baylor we were the probably the worst team in the world and one of our players got hurt on a punt return on their sideline I went over their sideline and he was ripping the ref because they made the call for us he I was like man I didn’t know you could say that to the ref like I’m being too gentle with these guys um and I’ve always been out and seen Dane in different places and just kind of knew him as like you know I I went sat in a clinic just to listen to him talk right like as he when he was the OC at Oklahoma State or whatever so I’ve I’ve always known him from afar and like the Red Bull on the side Sidelines and all those things and then like I said I got to spend a day with him a couple years ago and me and Julie went to dinner and I got to really get to know him he’s just really a thoughtful and sightful man and then having him seeing him here seeing his process here it’s you know it’s you guys know the way I feel about Phil snow it’s very much like Phil you know watching Tony watching the way they they work um just very methodical you know Dana comes in he he you know he studies the opponent till he understands and then they get together and it’s just just the rhythm of the way that he does things U makes total sense to me you know like um a lot of like a lot of the guys on our staff we we didn’t come up through like big organizations like we weren’t like you know we weren’t some famous coach’s son or we weren’t you know so like we kind of nickeled and dimed our way up to like Albright College and then a ga here a ga there and so I was never able to be under a great offensive like system then I had a chance to go the Giants I work for Kevin gilbride who’s one of the great offensive coordinators in NFL history and he had some run and shoot things and I love them and so I kind got a chance but but this for me like you know this is a chance and and Dana is not he’s not we’re not running the air raid he doesn’t coach the air raid anymore like that was just what he came up in but to me just seeing the way that he processes things it’s like so close to what we were doing it’s just it’s just a little bit better it’s just a little bit more simplified it’s so I think whether it’s sat or Glenn or Garrett or Donnie or EJ or any other coaches on our offense they’re really benefiting from watching the way the process plays out and and it’s it’s from the way they watch tape to the way that they script to the way that they attach plays to the script to the way that they do their walkthrough pre-practice the way they do routes on air it’s just it’s all these things that I’ve had offensive coaches wanted to do but I’ve it never made complete and total sense to me till I worked with Dana and now it makes sense to me so you know if it’s if it if I coach with Dana for one more week or if we coach together for the next 10 years I’ll be a I’ll be a better Coach as a result and you know bringing in Tony after being with Phil I had one defensive coordinator for my entire whatever that’s been 10 11 years as a head coach Tony Tony had a completely different process and it was really really um cool for me to see and interesting for me to see and learn from and so um this has been great you know normally you have kind of like hey this is our way and um it’s been it’s been it’s been interesting and then you know I just think that that incremental process like you look at what Ed’s done you know think about I said half the game think where we were at Purdue and Ruckers we couldn’t even get a punt off and think about where we are now not that that was okay but saying like you know to be putting balls out at the four and having big kickoff returns and you know Ed’s instead of just blowing everything up Ed’s just gotten a little bit better and gotten the guys that get a little bit better so um I don’t know if I’m answering your question other than to say it’s helped me and it’s really taught me a lot what have you seen in terms of the progression on special teams and how important will that be Friday with you know a team like Iowa that field position so important yeah I think you know um you know like I said I’ve I’ve really studied coach fenon and I have so much respect for what he’s done and from the fact you know he’ll take the ball you know a lot of guys will defer you know he he’ll take the ball to have the win in the fourth quarter and the way that they’ll the way that they’ll play field position the way that you know they’ll they’ll punt the ball down it’s it’s very much like when you’re in the NFL playing all the you know coach belich and all his coaches you know because when I when I was there you you’d play Joe judge you’d play those guys um it’s really difficult and they have a great punter they have an elite returner they’ve got great special teams and um it’ll be a real challenge it’ll be a real Challenge and uh uh on a game like this a Friday night in the cold those things show up that’s why they win the close games they’re very comfortable you know very to me like it’s almost like for them like the game doesn’t even start till the second half begins it’s like they’re very comfortable playing in a close game and uh they know who they are and that I I really enjoyed watching that from them so uh you know Brian’s been really punting the ball well um uh We’ve uh we’ve been more consistent in terms of catching punts and not letting balls roll down and having us in bad field position um you know we had some two returners out there last week to get try to get jakori State jakori loose so um we’ll try to have our best plan possible my my only thing to the coaches is like hey do whatever you guys want just make sure something we can execute let’s not go out there and try to solve the world with a pencil let’s let’s let our guys go out and execute and so you know you know whether it’s Carter or Nelson running down and kickoff and Tackle them at the 20 you know hopefully we can make some plays versus probably the premier special teams unit in the Big 10 just to be clear are you 100% outside practice team 100% outside uh I mean um if there was a day where I if I can’t stand the cold I might say hey let’s go inside like and there’s been some times like I said like like uh the week of Ohio State or maybe Ohio State I put the offense in that week or uccl like ca because I wanted them to have blistering crowd noise because it’s so loud in the Hawks but in general when the field when the grass fields are workable we never go inside um they might be inside a little bit for like individual drills so we don’t cut up the grass but like our team periods are all outside I’m uh I’m not you as you guys know I’m not a huge fan of turf um there’s some Turf companies you know we we we had we had helis Turf when I was at uh uh Baylor and I like their turfs I’d go out a little more but we um we’re we’re we’re um we’re outside as you know 95% of the time we’re doing something think doubt El thir touchdown that he’d like to get a run or a leak out you think he’s got the hands for it trust my my phone’s been blowing up from Tai talking about running the football so I can promise you this we might do in practice we’re not going to hand the ball Ty Ty Robinson anytime soon so n t Ty uh those guys it was funny you normally you try something like that and you’re yelling for the defensive guys and run over their helmet like they were standing right next to us like they wanted to go out there him and Judy um Judy I mean you go back and look at this year because he’s also been the fullback in our 22 sets I mean he’s had some great box so uh he’s you know when we lost Barrett Barrett was a really good player for us when we lost Barrett um Judy and then Linda Meer now but Tyle also they they’ve all kind of filled that void it’s it’s it’s all Big 10 time voting things like that feel free to talk about anybody you like but I would curious if you brag a little bit on tie there’s 18 teams in the league there’s a million defensive Lin but how good of a season do you feel like he’s had within the context of your team yeah t well I mean um I mean we’re one of the better defenses in the Big 10 right and we’re certainly one of the better run defenses in the Big 10 and Tai’s been dominant um I think he had six seven I don’t know how many six sacks I saw on the board before the game it said he had six sacks before the game as I was standing out there looking at the so I don’t know if he had one in the last game or not um but Tai you know Tai has been absolutely dominant and he should be you know he should be up for every Accolade um he’s um you know he’s someone that people should draft really high next year because he’s the total package I mean he’s he’s as good a football player as is he’s really athletic um he could bulk up he could slim down um he can play three Downs in the NFL which means he can play which means he should be first team all big 10 here uh he’s on his way to go to medical school when he’s done he’s going to be a doctor um and his girlfriend Bryce is twice as cool as he is I mean he’s he’s um he he’s he’s the real deal he’s uh he’s um he’s one of he’s one of the best players I’ve seen in the Big 10 this year I watch all the tape crossover and there’s a lot of great ones you know we’re getting ready to play against 94 from Iowa I put him right there right up there there’s a lot of really good ones uh but uh but yeah Tai has been dominant there was an interaction post game between one of pickles police detail and uh Donnie do you know what happened there uh I came in this morning they were they were showing me the video so uh I you know I don’t want to speculate without knowing I you know obviously Donnie went to Wisconsin so I don’t know if I I don’t know if there was some history there with somebody or something but uh when I asked Donnie about it he was like h no big deal so um you know things happen after games people are emotional um you know but uh he seemed to kind of brush it off so um it was kind of mayhem out there you know trying to get off the Feld so uh but um yeah I don’t I don’t know much else other than that thanks guys e e e e question coach two years ago you guys beat by Indiana what’s the goal coming off an emotional game like that make sure foot stays on yeah we believe me we’ve addressed a lot of things after that game you know a lot of people are saying some really positive things you got to find a way to put it behind you and you know it can obviously be the other way as well when you have a tough performance uh there’s a lot of negativity circulating around so you know as as we say a lot in this business you got to find a way to put the tough defeats behind you I thought we prepared well after that St Mary’s game which was a tough loss for us and I I’ve liked how our team is responded and come back to work after the big uh win on the road at kraton so you know now it’s about going out there executing hopefully getting off to a great start get one more day to prepare uh tomorrow and um you know again it the biggest thing we talk about with our team is emotions and you can’t let your highs get too high you can’t let your lows get too low you have to stay consistent with your preparation regardless of what happened in the previous game and you’re only as good as your next performance so you know it’s a big week for us playing a good team an athletic team uh that plays very fast and a team that can really score the basketball so you know if if we’re not sharp if we’re not on point they’re going to make us pay that in mind you seen the guys respond well over the past three or four days yeah it was a little sluggish yesterday to start but but I liked how they responded to to tough coaching and and got back after it and finished the practice well and I thought from start to finish today was was a very solid day and um you know we’re going to take him to see Gladiator 2 tonight uh excited about that and then get uh get one more opportunity tomorrow uh you know to make sure that everybody understands the game plan and uh we’ll get a shoot around earlier because of the early start time the 5:30 tip on Wednesday but uh our guys our guys are excited to get back out there I think they understand now uh what what we’re capable of doing especially on the defensive end still have room to grow offensively we’re doing some good things getting to the free throw line uh getting into the paint and uh you know I I think we’ll have a game where we we take the lid off from the perimeter but you know I really liked how our guys controlled Tempo in that game followed the game plan to Perfection that was about as good as I’ve had a team that is from start to finish followed the game plan and did exactly what we needed to do to give oursel a chance and then make the plays down the stretch to uh you know to hold kraton off which is not easy to do on that home court so you know just a really good um you know overall performance for our guys but again knowing the importance of putting that behind us and uh and moving on to the next one that said what kind of confidence does that give you and this group you know the amount of turnover that you had this early in the season that they execute a game plan like that against that kind of opponent yeah especially you know the thing that I was most pleased with was how they responded after the tough loss to St Mary’s and we had a very long film session that next morning cuz I really felt that there was a lot of things that happened out there that prevented us from winning that game up in sou Falls which would have been a huge win for us now that being said you know you learn a lot of things about your team and how they’re going to go prepare after uh you know a tough film session and they did a great job of putting that behind them and then preparing for it so you know we had another tough film session yesterday you can’t let him get comfortable uh you got to continue to go out there coach them hard and and U you know put a game plan that gives us the best opportunity and the best chance uh this team we play in South Dakota will pressure us they’ll full-court press we have to take care of the ball that was a huge part of the uh the win at kraton is we took care of the ball didn’t turn it over and uh you know did a great job on the glass uh South Dakota they crash all five and we’re going to have to do a good job hitting and uh you know hopefully take advantage on the other end if we can uh finish off possessions you’s experience uh when you brought him in here but how much was that at hand on on Friday I think he had four points there in that stretch to kind of put it put it away yeah and hit a tough pull up at the end of the clock we were we were trying to shorten the game and this was after turnover he had a bad turnover where uh ber uh had a shake play out of the corner and and he and he overthrew it and you know he did a really good job of keeping everything calm and moving on to the next play we went down and got a couple stops and then he made a couple really big plays that one in the Fast Break where I was telling him to slow down but he went in there anyway and and scored on a fast break but you know it is it’s nice to have a guy like that I thought Aaron Ulus had one of the bigger baskets in the game as well uh got the and one and it really was I everybody that stepped on the flooor contributed to that win and that’s what it’s all about when when you have a group that goes out there they’re they’re joined at the hip and I just thought you know they were all game long for 40 minutes they were connected out there and and that’s what you look for you have to have all Five Guys in the right spot our defense if you have one guy out of position it’s going to affect the whole group and I thought the guys were really tied together for uh for all 40 minutes especially in that defensive end more looks for Connor did you see that payoff also his off ball movement it seemed like he was kind of running around like Kay a little bit that emph it was yeah it was we actually uh we worked on it the night before we went over to the arena you know this team right now can’t get enough shots so we went over there night before we don’t always do that and uh you know put in a couple actions for him just to run off screens and he took full advantage of it I thought our guys did a really good job of getting him open Aaron Ulus had a great bottom hip screen you know screening angles are very important in uh in that new set that we put in for him and uh the thing I was really pleased with Connor is how he was getting to the rim and finishing in there and hitting his floaters and you know he kind of allude to to Quay that’s where he in the how many years we have him three three years of quay his growth from becoming just a three-point shooter to getting in the paint to where he was second in the Big 10 and two-point field goal percentage I think that was the the year before but you know it just speaks to the growth of his game and the development of his game and Conor’s really worked on that he worked on it hard this summer of getting in there the way kraton plays you have to take some of those mid-range shots I know I talked about that after the game the other day and you know Bryce was the first half and then Connor got it going in that little area in the second half but the way caul brener sits in the paint the way they chase you in there you have to be able to knock down some of those shots and preparing for yourself toot have you been able to lean on Andrew at all as a guy who was uh in their conference for a few years um not really I mean he uh the way they’re playing right now I think is a little different than than when Andrew was there but you know the one thing that he does know is how good that league is and you know like I said if if if you’re satisfied if you go out there and you have a little hangover from the from the kraton game is not going to end well and again we’ve tried to warn our guys and talk to our guys a lot about that these last couple games but you know that’s the one thing Andrew can let our guys know is it’s a really good League that’s got very good coaching and uh you know the way they’ve built this roster I’m really impressed they are very athletic uh they got a lot of guys that can make shots it’s similar to me a little bit to the uh Rio Grand um you know UT Rio Grand Valley that we played in that opening game and obviously you see what they’ve done almost knocking off Wisconsin who’s been unbelievable uh this year and playing kraton and us uh tight they they they do remind me of that team the way they rebound the way they’re Relentless uh the way they’ve got multiple guys that can knock down shots so this is going to be a tough test for us Wednesday and we we got to be on point in the post game you mentioned Jan’s leadership last week was that him taking it actually to another level than it had been at or 100% yeah he uh his voice was the most consistent it’s been since he’s been here for multiple days in a row he’s had his moments but I was just really impressed with Jawan not only leading into that game but in the huddles in the locker room at halftime he he just he’s really taken that on upon himself to be the vocal leader of this group and we needed somebody to emerge and step into that role Raley’s a great leader by example Bryce you know certainly has his moments of leading by example and uh you know being vocal but we need that really consistent voice and I’m proud of Jan for stepping up and uh and taking that on and we’re going to need that the rest of the Year this as I told him this can’t be a onewe thing you know when you’re a veteran guy you’ve been here longer than anybody it’s a it’s a big responsibility but you know if you if you take it on and um like Jawan did it it’s going to benefit Jawan and our whole team for uh for our future been a lot of love for Nate lenser after that Craton game I guess maybe just speak on the impact that he’s had with having your guys Embrace that defensive mindset yeah rightfully so on the praise that Nate lunter is getting he I’m I’m just telling you guys you see him on the sideline you see how energetic he is I asked if his rotator cuff was okay by telling our guys to get back transition after that game but that’s how he is in practice you know it’s every day it’s uh it’s shoot around he’s never off you know I I talk about a lot of players that are like that but you know from a coaching perspective you know when your main emphasis is defense uh you have to have an unbelievable motor and that’s what Nate does and you know I’m really proud of this staff uh you know the roles that have been assigned uh Adam Howard with what he’s doing to help me with everything on the offensive end and and you know Ernie you know working with our big guys uh you know rebounding he does all our special teams uh stuff but you know Nate putting that game plan together and you know going over it uh with me and you know talking about the things and you know where are the soft spot where can crate and hurt you and you know we just felt like we had to take away the paint the game before uh at PBA the previous year they absolutely handed it to us because they got the paint and the three-point line we just really wanted to take away the paint if they got it going we probably were going to have a tough time winning that game but we just felt we had to eliminate easy baskets uh and our guys were on point you know not only did Nate put in a great game plan but I thought our guys did a really good job of going out there and executing for for 40 minutes coach you got a lot of players that are well traveled played a lot of basketball how much is that helping guys like Sam guys like Bryce returners in your program just to have that outside experience yeah it it is important and not only those guys not only Jawan Bryce but you look at guys like excuse me kale Jacobson you look at Jeff Grace you look at Henry Bert you’ve got guys that have been around this program a long time and you know our defense there’s it is complicated there’s no doubt about it we get a ton of reps but we continue to tell believe in it we we got so much better as the year went on a year ago and it’s great to see in the early part of the Season you know that that some of that’s carried over and I think a lot of that has to do with the veteran players that have been in the system and you know you get a guy like ber that comes in it’s a completely different system than he played in Gavin uh Connor um Braxton you know it’s a completely different system than any of those guys have ever played in so it’s taken a little bit of time but hopefully we showed what we’re capable of and we can take off from there but our our returners have played a big part in that and you know if we keep guarding like that and can get our offense going you know we have a chance to be a really good really good team five games under your guys’ belt and obviously two against you know pretty good teams I’m curious how much do you and the coaching staff sort of use the D that you guys have to determine this is going to be our defensive lineup when we need a couple stops or this this is our close like is that enough data so far that you guys have to determine know those types yeah it’s a great question we’re getting there I I think with uh with the lineup that we had in the floor at the end we’ve had bur out there quite a bit to finish games at the five Sam obviously he’s helped us win a lot of games on the defensive end these last couple years so he’s generally going to be out there Bryce Jawan you know you got four really good Defenders out there and then you know you figure out who who the other gu is going to be you know with Jawan uh you know out there so we got F you know defensive lineup that we feel pretty good about and then you know we’ve subbed offense defense uh there at the end as well to get Connor back on the floor but you know it’s uh as far as the data yeah we get we get the those reports after every game as far as fiveman lineups you know pairs uh you know three-man who the best defensive lineups our best rebounding team and then who’s going to give you the best chance to put the ball in the basket but you know defense is where we felt like we had to win that game the other night just because we had to slow it down and muck it up and uh you know I think we had the right group out there for the most part all right thank you e
