Nester Cortez is going to America’s Dairyland and this on X this is funny man uh from Kurt hog who writes a lot of people have woken up in Las Vegas confused consider Nester Cortez among them he’s in Vegas celebrating his birthday and woke up this morning to a ton of missed calls and texts and had no idea why and I’m sure Nester as we say good morning and thanks for joining us it became pretty clear shortly thereafter uh thanks for coming on man nice to see you congratulations on this deal you’re going to love Milwaukee but tell us about this tweet you were in Vegas and probably woke up a little foggy and said wait a minute what yeah so my my birthday’s December 10 it was on a Tuesday and uh traveling with family members and and Friends uh we didn’t travel till Thursday so uh was in Vegas uh all weekend and woke up uh Friday morning I think it was or Saturday morning I can’t remember the day but anyways um I look at I look at my phone and I’m like why do I have so I I never wake up with 30 30 40 messages so I I wake up I see messages I see 12 Miss calls Brian Cashman my agents and I’m like uh oh this this can’t be this can’t be the news I was expecting and um once I woke up and went on Twitter saw obviously all the uh all the tweets and um I was I was traded right there and then so so that you knew they weren’t calling your agent and cashing everybody happy birthday something was up right yeah I mean there were two days late that was the case hey so let me ask you you know it was interesting listening to uh Devin’s press conference with the Yankees he said he thought it might be the Dodgers cuz that’s what he kept hearing that he would be going to La and I’m wondering you knew your name had to be if they were going to go get somebody you might be in the package had you heard anything prior to that you might be included in a deal I did not hear anything um even talking to my agents prior to that I was asking hey is there any news is there any you know is there any commotion going on and and they they they they told me nothing they said uh obviously they were in the winter meetings and and all that but they said you know stuff could happen in the next hours so uh just be patient I I knew I knew that you know with the signing of of of Max freed it was it was going to be tough to to to have that rotation of six seven guys and I knew somebody was going to be the out and you know it was me you know I we had heard your name and I’m sure you did too around the trade deadline last year so this probably puts an end to all the kind of questions in your brain I what’s it like from a player standpoint when you hear your name discussed as maybe somebody that’s in a compensation package or somebody that’s being coveted by another team H how did that settle with you you know it was unique because uh the or the only organization I know is in New York Yankees you know and and being there for a long time and getting drafted by them hearing all the commotion especially at the deadline um you know reporters and and you know players were coming up to me and asking how how I felt and how did everything you know how how was everything settling with me and I told them I’m going to take it a day at a time I was actually pitching the day of the deadline so I needed to focus on that as well um with all the noise coming through but um you know I’m excited for this opportunity and and and I can’t wait to to be in Milwaukee and compete with those guys I know they’re they’re very young and and and you know they’re always knocking on the door with with contention and and you know just this year with with with me there I just want to learn and I want to I want to help the guys that want to learn from me and hopefully there’s a lot of more shimmies and a lot of more tricks in their bags uh for me to learn for me to show them well they’re going to love you there dude I’m telling you man you are go go look at some YouTube video of Teddy hagera left-hander your stature like they are going to love you in in Bruce City I know it hey you said shimmies cuz I had it written down as a question I wanted to ask you I love the Nast that’s where you get the name for me nasty Nester the and the the things you’re doing what that was a box by the way that was that was brilliant dude we love that one man so when did you start doing all this stuff you know uh my first I want to say my first three or four years in the minor leagues I didn’t do any of this stuff like the sidearm the shimmies nothing none of that because I was just trying trying to find my way uh in the organization being a lefty undiz throwing 88 89 90 um I wasn’t sure if that was going to play but once I started having that success in the minor leagues I said you know what hell with it I’m going to I’m going to I’m going to try this I’m going to run with it and until somebody tells me otherwise I’m going to keep doing this and and that’s what I did and you know once I got into the major league level um at first I didn’t know how it was going to play up um but I stuck to it and a lot of guys like it most of the catchers that have caught me you know love it when I do it and you know it’s just it’s just something that’s that’s part of me now as a fan I love it I love it so I want to ask you a serious question though cuz that’s some crazy balance how do how do you balance be able to come back put some something on the ball what what’s the keys to being able to do that I think I think having it predetermined on my mind as soon as I catch the ball from the catcher um it’s something that helps you with with the balance I don’t I don’t think I just go up there and like okay I’m you know mid mid mid wind up uh it’s something that I I choose to do right when I get the ball from the catcher and uh I think that’s what helps me the most to keep my balance and and be able to do that there’s nothing there’s no there’s no pitchcombe like hey I want you to jump down on here but uh other than that everything comes off off the top of my head and and you know a lot of credit to catchers that that aren’t expecting it and can still catch the ball and that’s something else hey uh you know Major League Baseball I don’t know if you saw this or not came out with this pitching report uh about guys health and really it’s about velocity and how much guys are ramping up and the injuries occurring more pre-spring training and spring training as opposed to into the season so it’s really trying to get our arms around all the injuries have been with pitching and so I’m wondering your take uh you know there’s a lot of guys are seing for velocity and you obviously you tried for velocity as well but you’re not a guy throwing 100 um but you’ve been able to stay healthy so I’m curious your thoughts on what I just kind of described I know you hadn’t read the report yet but what do you think of that yeah I think I think the the it’s what you said uh a lot of pitchers are getting hurt pre-spring training and spring training and even like the first week or two of of the season and I think that’s the most important time cuz that’s that’s when we’re wrapping up so throughout the years and and throughout you know luckily I’ve been having Seasons where where I’m getting to learn my body learning to learn myself um every year I think the most important time is now you know that November December January uh months where you got to ramp up as much as possible and be as game ready as possible uh come spring training I and I know in spring training you know teams start with one inning and then two innings and then so on and so forth but I think being able to get to to spring training already with two innings I in a live VP here at like in your hometown before you get to to this free training facility is a big I think it’s a big big key for us uh you know sometimes we we throw so many innings during the season that we want to take time off and we want to recuperate but I think I think jumping on the wagon again after two or three weeks off after the season is the way to go and you know there’s a lot of pitchers that can attest to that too and that’s exactly what I’m doing I I I took about two to three weeks off and you know I’m I’m jumping on the wagon and and trying to get as is possible for spring training yeah that was my my biggest concern is when do you rest cuz you need to rest but two to three weeks is that enough I think bodywise it is I think arm just has to keep has to keep going arm has to keep moving no matter if it’s a football no matter if it’s you know you know weight of ball but I think the ball the the arm needs to keep going and I think that’s the key to to staying healthy for for the long run hey neeter the last time we had a guest on this show from Las Vegas or one that had just traveled home from Las Vegas it was Pablo sandal in like 2012 and he had just been a judge in the Miss Amica contest still he still had a few Pops in him uh and Ken Rosenthal asked him if his wife was aware that he was judging a beauty contest and that’s when the interview ended and he hung up the phone so I’ll ask you uh very diplomatically what was the level of debauchery like in Vegas celebrating your 30th birthday and did everybody uh leave in in one piece oh yeah everybody up in one piece uh we had a lot of fun we watched a lot of shows had good dinners uh you know gambled a little bit but uh overall we went uh we went a group of 12 so it was just a fun fun three four days and and I was happy I was able to spend it with those guys and my family and back to work now very nice man it was a responsible 30th birthday celebration Vegas hey like Matt started this off you’re going to love Milwaukee yeah man this is going to be such a good fit you’re going to love it there I’m going to miss you in New York I got to admit I’m going to miss seeing you they’re going to love you there too um you got good people you’re going to be around and you’re going to love it there happy holidays to you and your family Nester we appreciate the visit today man thank you so much guys I appreciate it and likewise to you
