this is football night in America served by Applebee’s welcome to the football night in America podcast we are here to rewrap your week 16 games Maria Taylor alongside Matthew Barry Mike Florio and Jason Garrett here with you you got a present on your desk too already you got something Jason Mike Florio tell us what this thing is right here this is the this is the pepperon roll this is the West Virginia Italian delicacy it was developed 100 some years ago for the coal miners Going Underground you can’t take a sandwich down there and get lettuce and bread all you know all over the place you need bread that has the pepperoni baked into it it gets nice and greasy when it gets hot but no preservatives so you better eat this fast cuz it’s going to get moldy like Dan Campbell likes it you can send it to Dan C if you wait another day or from floral Bakery and they come from thousands of miles to get this thing at that special they send them all over the country is that right yes mhm we appreciate that dur in the holiday season yeah listen we’re on our Applebee set we like about food and we’ve got a pepperoni roll from florio’s Bakery um let’s talk about who we don’t Jason we’re hungry over here exactly I’m just saying next week well your gift today is the commanders beat the Eagles how about it there were so many times Matthew left the screening room was upset he came back but ultimately the commanders outscored the Eagles 22 to6 in the fourth quarter to get a victory what stood out to you about this yeah just like Jaden Daniels I also came back he probably disgusted oh look at what’s going on here I I mean I don’t know that there are enough superlatives to talk about what this kid is doing here there I mean like couple he got nothing from the Run game in this one right Washington running backs 15 carries for 32 yards they had six turnovers five in five actual turnovers and they got stopped on a fourth and one so six different times they turned the ball over they were down big in the first quarter they were down big in the third and he kept his point he kept coming back as well I the other thing that I think is really interesting here is credit to the offensive line because last week against the Saints the commander line got dominated and now they’ve got to play Philadelphia Daniels got sacked only once now I know there there was some you know a bunch of turnovers and everything that he got he got but uh I think just the Poise to lead them down in the last seconds to get a touchdown and by the way that last Drive everyone’s going to focus on the touchdown but that last Drive was perfect in terms of timing because the defense had struggled as well and so just getting a first down letting the clock run like a really kind of a master class in clock management that final drive as well I think the other thing we’re doing is we’re seeing that he’s he’s gotten through that rookie wall once you get to the number of games the maximum you play in college and you start to wear down he’s gotten his second win he’s gotten through that and he reminds me of the guy that we heard his former SEC opponents talk about at The Scouting combom because we’d ask all these SEC Defensive players who’s the toughest guy you ever fa and they all said Jaden Daniels because he’s here and then he’s gone and we saw some of that today when the commanders needed it most this guy is ridiculous I mean this is the NFL you’re playing quarterback as a rookie and what he’s doing to me I don’t know that I’ve seen it very much I mean he’s carrying the team you mentioned it they had no running game they didn’t necessarily play great defense they gave up 33 points to Philadelphia and uh time and time again he’s the guy it’s on his shoulders and he comes through the the physical ability off the chart when he’s running the ball in the big moments out in space he looks like CD lamb he’s and these guys miss and then he stands in the pocket under duress and makes throw time and time again and he’s so mature as a passer timing anticipation along with having a great arm but line one for me with him is the Poise and the composure uh a big moment for me was he throws an interception late doesn’t blink comes right back and leaves them for the third touchdown in the fourth quarter against a team that’s won 10 straight games the guy’s off the charts yeah by the way that interception like you think about all the other turnovers too fumbles from Brian Robinson Dam me Brown has the bad fumble as well so I mean like a lot of them weren’t on him to me it’s not just the Poise coach but it’s the Poise late think about some of the games that the commanders have been involved think about the Hail Mary obviously think about the game against Dallas which they ended up losing but not because of Daniels they missed an extra point but you know with whatever 14 seconds left he hits Terry mclen for a 90s something yard bomb think about that early game against Cincinnati on Monday night where he hits muren in about this much of a window in the corner of the end zone to put them ahead of the bank angles towards the end of the game like having that kind of poise you don’t see in quarterbacks generally like the few that do in our league are are you know among the elites the elites and here’s a kid in his you know rookie year putting up those kind of uh plays in the late moments and the biggest part for me though is the pervasive impact of this when you’re playing with this guy you’re one of 10 other guys in the offensive huddle or you’re on defense and it’s late in The game everyone knows that this guy’s going to do it time and time again and and that gives you hope hope that gives you belief that raises your level of play and we’re seeing it week after week might be the best weekend the franchise has had in a long time on Saturday Congress votes to allow the federal government to transfer control of RFK Stadium site to the District of Columbia for 99 years they can do a deal for a stadium there maybe and it’s not finished yet but maybe they end up back on that site and then they get the big win over Philadelphia and they can still win the division it’s amazing to think the commanders can still win the division yeah they’re they’re still in the mix here the last thing I want to say about Janee Daniels here is like we just like Terry mclen is a special player right and the offensive line I think has played above expectations but while alom Zak has had some nice moments you know he had the two touchdowns today and diam brown had a big catch the fact of the matter is is these guys were considered journeyman Pro you know Jameson Crowder is a veteran who’s played in the league many many years caught the winning touchdown like other than muren there is not a guy on that offense that you go like that guy I Brian Robinson but I’m saying of the pass catcher Zach was out of football eight months ago and and so the fact that credit Dan Quinn credit Cliff kingsbery to put them in a position to succeed but Jane Daniels I I’ve made this argument on my on my Daily Show Jane Daniels is playing with worse Talent this year than he played at LSU when you think about Malik neighbors and Brian Thomas and some of the guys he was throwing to when he was at LSU I mean it’s unbelievable what he’s doing but the the larger point is great players make everybody around him better corre he’s doing that and we see it right for front of our eyes Well we’d be remissed to not mention the fact that Jaylen Herz goes out in the first quarter with a concussion we see Kenny picket come in and not immediately feeling that impact he did come in throw a touchdown to AJ Brown saquan Barkley did Rush for 106 yards in that first quarter but it did eventually wear and there was a difference without Jaylen Herz in this offense we’re talking about in the viewing room the idea that when you take away a quarterback who can beat you with his legs the rpos dry up it’s hard to for Squan Barkley to get loose because you don’t have the threat of the quarterback running the ball like you do with jayen Herz so there’s more pressure on the passing game and Kenny picket got traded by the Steelers to the Eagles for a reason the Steelers didn’t believe in him after two years in Pittsburgh and and so yeah if they don’t have Jaylen Herz this is going to be a tough Run for the the Eagles and who knows with a concussion a lot of times we see a guy back right away sometimes they’re off a week we’ve seen guys this year like a Malik neighbors misses a couple of games so we’ll just see what happens with Jaylen Herz yeah beyond the quarterback run threat and what happens is the backside guy has to account for Jaylen Herz so on these Zone reads okay all these people are defending saquin but that guy isn’t when Kenny picket your quarterback that guy gets involved in the Run fit and that dries that running game up a little bit we saw that today but the other part is Jaylen HZ is their starting quarterback for a reason and he in the big moments all year long has made a ton of good plays both with his feet and with his arm and they didn’t have that but the guys around picket didn’t necessarily make some plays Devonte Devonte Smith one of my favorite players in the National Football League drops the ball late and that would have changed the complexion of this entire game all that said they got six stop they got five turnovers and a and a fourth and one like you should be able to win an NFL game if you get six turnovers in a game regardless of who your quarterback is and they did and I mean Kenny picket was a starter it’s not like he’s some scrub Kenny picket was a first round pick in the NFL draft somebody who was a you know a starter for multiple years with the Steelers um and been in that system at two counts as multiple but two fine but right they toally hit the road Kenny it’s okay it’s okay I would argue Kenny picket is better than a decent amount of backup quarterbacks in the NFL right when you look around sort of the landscape you know we’ve seen Tim Bole multiple times this year there aren’t enough there aren’t enough bad quarterbacks to go around in the NFL I’ll do the pessimistic spin that we’ve all been waiting for this Christmas and holiday season but but but to the point about the running game you know Maria said it saquin Barkley 106 rushing yards in the first quarter he finished with 150 I mean 41 rushing yards the rest of the way once Herz went out once the threat of that that RPO went away so you know Herz is a big deal to the the Eagles and so I know a lot of people say like ah well they they didn’t have Hertz but still I think there’s a little bit of a concern here because you can’t lose a game in the NFL when you when you get five turnovers the way they did the defense did their part let’s go on to the Vikings and the Seahawks uh ultimately the Vikings like still controlling their path right now to a one seed and so from your team to his team he’s purple tie congratulations do you believe in Sam darnold I do believe in Sam darnold which means the wheels are going to come off see the thing they’ve beening me in bit by bit I’ve been very skeptical and pessimistic and now I’m like hey you know what maybe they have something there’s a great clip from the locker room after the game with Kevin oconnell giving Sam darnold a game ball and we saw it during football night in America how they huddled around darn after he had the game-winning touchdown pass they believe in him and you said it in the viewing room you can’t let this guy out the door and they’re going to have a heck of a decision to make because they drafted their supposed future franchise quarterback in April in JJ McCarthy and now darnold is doing this what do you do for now they ride it out one week at a time they beat the Packers they beat the Lions and they’re the one seed and no one ever considered them a threat because it’s been Lions all the way and all the Vikings are just you know they’re eventually going to fall apart and now they’re two games away from stealing the one seed from the Lions it’s amazing to think they could and I’m starting to think they will I love its impact on you I really do I mean you become a brighter person as a result of you’re giving gifts to people true fantastic your generous spirit is coming out um I love this story uh Sam Darnell was was a a favorite quarterback of mine when he was coming out because I thought he was such an instinctive player at USC and he goes to a couple bad environments and you never got a chance to see that the environment he goes to in Minnesota is really good for quarterbacks and you’re seeing not only him play well within the system but make plays instinct ly when things break down and we saw that all day long today so the macro idea of what do the Vikings do going forward first thing you need to do is win a couple games down the stretch and try to secure the one seed and do well in the playoffs and make a run at it but next year I think it’s a real challenge for them to say okay well we’re just going to move on we’re going to move on from this guy who’s played so well we’ve won so many games with and we’re going to insert the number one pick from last year I think that’s a tricky proposition it’s hard to get quarterbacks to play this well at this higher level and he’s still only 27 years old so that’s what’s amazing he feels like he’s been around forever and he’s only 27 he’s got a lot of football ahead of him so um they shouldn’t be worried about it right now but at some point this this question is going to come up and I’m betting on the guy he’s played too well you think about this I mean there’s that’s it’s a conversation for the offseason but similar like Baker Mayfield and Tampa Bay and we’ve seen this a couple of places where or Jared Goff in Detroit where he has found a home like this is a guy that was a top five overall pick in the NFL draft that came out bounced around didn’t really find the right fit with a team but now in Kevin oconnell system with the Vikings he’s clearly found a home and he’s got them playing really well this was in and by the way it’s not just how well he played today it’s throughout the season today was the 11th different time he’s thrown multiple touchdown passes was the 10 different time 10 different game that he’s thrown for over 200 yards and what that’s been able to do is by because the offense is so efficient and because they’re sustaining drives it’s allowing the defense to play so well so much is going to be made of of S D because it’s a great story because he’s playing so well and him and Jefferson have such a great connection but think about this Minnesota defense two interceptions on Gino Smith two sacks they played well the head they had they held Ken Walker to under four yards per carry like the Brian Flores and this defense are playing at a really high level like when you look at the numbers and you watch this football like it’s not a shock that the Vikings have a legitimate shot to be the number one seed in the NFC let’s go through the Lions cuz that’s the team that they will face in week 18 and both of these teams control their path to that one seed um but they played against the Bears obviously you know the Bears aren’t playing for much but we always had questions about golf playing outside and in the cold and and they look to see the consistent in this game yeah you got it done today three more touchdown passes ate over the last two weeks over 800 passing yards in the last two games and the Lions don’t miss a beat that that rant from Dan Campbell this week The Moldy breed rant on 971 the ticket in Detroit was just epic and his idea is you know we don’t care like this is exact what we needed we needed to be smacked in the face because now we’ll just go back and we’ll reset and we’ll go take it and and just the way he talks you can tell the impact he has on his players individually and and and it worked they there’s no woe as us there’s no our defense is Shattered by injuries they just went out and they took it and it was 20 to nothing before you knew it yeah they’re all in in Detroit behind Dan Campbell he’s done an amazing job leading that franchise and I love the team that they’ve built and and so much it goes down to the makeup of the guys and so when you have adversity like they’ve had they don’t blink at it and I can remember when Aiden Hutchinson got hurt early in the year I communicated with Dan and he said hey I love Aiden we really we feel bad for him but no excuses we got to keep moving on and they’ve been tested time and time again particularly on the defensive side of the ball and and again they they just keep rolling and Chicago was not World beaters this isn’t the greatest win they’ve ever had but they went into a rougher environment where it was cold they’re playing outdoors and again they played at a really high level so I love the mentality of the team I think that’s going to give them a chance coming down the stretch here’s my question for you we talked about this in the viewing room it’s going to be highly relevant for about 24 to 28 hours if the Vikings beat the Packers because if that happens next Sunday the Monday night game between the Lions and the 49ers means nothing it all comes down to week 18 win or lose do you rest your starters you got long trip to San Francisco short week back home big game with the Vikings do you rest your Starters play your guys anybody who’s healthy is ready to play play them stay in Rhythm as best you can there’s a rhythm to playing football in the NFL it’s week after week after week and keep those guys in that Rhythm it’s happened to us in the past where you had to rest some guys and you never felt like you were playing quite the same way that you were that got you to that point so I’m for playing the guys if somebody’s hurt or close to being hurt air on the side of caution but everybody else play and go play well keep it rolling I was glad to see Jared G have such a big game here 336 you mentioned the three touchdowns as well because that’s what they’re going to need for the alliance to go far the offense is going to have to carry them they’ve just had so many injuries on the defensive side of the ball and credit Dan Campbell and that staff for keeping them together um and and keeping them uh upbeat but at some point once you get into the it’s one thing to beat up on Chicago it’s another thing when you’re going to start getting when you have to play a Minnesota when you have to play at Philadelphia you know the Rams are hot right when you have to start Jaden Daniels when you have to start playing some of these teams with really good offenses in the NFL uh in the playoffs that’s going to be tough here Caleb Williams by the way 334 yards two touchdowns and I know listen the the Lions controlled this game and they won it but they gave up over 300 yards to a quarterback that has been up in a rookie quarterback that’s been up up and down this year and I just I I sort of feel like they’re the NFC version of the bills and I know we’re going to talk about this a second but just like really great offense with some questions on defense it’s amazing though nine straight losses nine straight games for Caleb Williams with no interceptions 326 straight pass without an interception they they’ve lost every game yeah I know I know oh Caleb like help help me uh we need a little bit of help let’s talk about the race uh to the one seed for the NFC to do that Steve coraki still hanging out here with us to break it all down yeah let’s take a look here at that NFC top seed race you can see how devastating this loss was for the Eagles today look coming into today you had 312 and two teams the eagles with a little bit better than a one in three shot of locking down that number one seed by season’s end in said barely a pulse now for the Eagles for the top seed meanwhile you’re talking about it though the lions with the easy win to 13-2 and the Vikings keeping Pace with that late win over Seattle so as you say this next week the Vikings playing the Packers if they were to lose that game and then the lions were to beat the ners that would be it Lions would clinch the one seed next week but if the Vikings can win next week over the Packers week 18 Vikings in Detroit top seed home field all on the line and of course because they’re from the same division the loser of that game wouldn’t just lose the top seat would fall all the way to number five and go on the road and if it does come down to Lions Vikings for the top seed either way it will have been a while the last time the Vikings were the top seed in the NFC you got to go back more than a quarter of a Century 1998 randil Cunningham Randy Moss they lost to the Falcons in the NFC title game and the last time the Lions were the one seed in the NFC how about never 50 years since they started seeding in the playoffs never once have the Lions been the one seed maybe this is the first year for that thanks Steve you br bring up a great question floral what were you doing in 1998 when the Vikings were a one SE to the Falcon like Steve until he did that that was the longest Afternoon Of My Life I remember Chuck Smith strip sacked Randle Cunningham late in the first half the Falcons scored a touchdown make it 20 to 14 and the rest of that game was just Agony when it went to overtime I was like I just want this bleeping thing to be over with I couldn’t take it anymore I still am scarred by it scar by a l the knife in his stomach move it out Merry Christmas we’re going to play a little game of naughty or nice which is basically do you agree or do you disagree um let’s start with saquin should win MVP if he breaks the rushing record naughty or nice I’m going to say naughty he’s been phenomenal but honestly the the Philadelphia defense is too good that’s part of the other reason that Philadelphia has been so good and when you play in a league with Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen as great as saquan is it’s hard for me to say you deserve the MVP when the way those two guys are playing right now at such a high level it is amazing in 2012 how Adrien Peterson came on late didn’t break it and took the MVP away from pton Manning in his first year with the Denver Broncos but I’m going to say naughty because this year there’s too many other guys that already have that glow Josh Allen Lamar Jackson going be tough to overcome then even if he sets the record nice are you guys kidding me Eric Dickerson you know when he played this is a long long time to have this record and and the impact that saquan has made he’s made that defense better he’s made that quarterback better he’s made those receivers better and if he breaks Eric Dickerson’s rushing record and they’re 14 and three you got to be kidding me what some people will say play of the Year some people will say well there’s 17 games and they were 16 at the time but that’s the number of games they have I don’t like that argument nobody said it I don’t remember anybody saying it when Dickerson beat OJ Simpson single season rushing record these are the number of games that you have eventually it’s going to happen what about Michael penck Jr will lead the Falcons to the playoffs yeah I’m going to say naughty they’re at Washington on our air next week I think the commanders win that game I’m not I’m not particular objetive but they’re they’re also home to Carolina the Panthers are a tough out like another they’ve gotten a lot better meanwhile the Buccaneers play home versus Carolina versus New Orleans I think the Buccaneers just have an easier schedule than the Falcons and it feels like if they don’t win the NFC South they’re not making the playoffs yeah naughty for now I mean it wasn’t penck today that propelled the Falcons to Victory it was the defense playing a very bad Giants team that’s just trying to get out of the season and go home and go do whatever they’re going to do next so believe it if it happens next week I say naughty too but the Bucks better get their act together here tonight to uh to finish this game against the Cowboys or else that changes the complexion of a little bit he’s played well I like how their team responded to him but I think I’m sticking with the Bucks Brock Bowers is the offensive rookie of the year I I get the argument right he needs five receptions to break puka ncua’s rookie record he’s a thousand yards he’s only the third tight in NFL history as a rookie to get a thousand yards but naughty I mean I’m sorry it’s Jaden Daniels and if for some reason it’s not Jaden Daniels offensive Rookie of the Year it’s B Knicks i i as brilliant as Bowers who I think possibly he’s the best Titan in the NFL right now but no he’s not offensive Rookie of the Year not yeah naughty as well I think there was a question there for a while is it B Knicks is it Jaden danels but I think Jaden Daniels showed everyone today that that it’s going to be him when it’s all said and done same naughty done and done Bill’s defense is a liability down the stretch or the playoffs yeah I I’m going to say nice here’s the bills defense rank over the last 3 weeks 30 second in scoring last in the NFL 32 in yards allowed per game last in the NFL 29th in yards allowed per play I just it is going to be a problem I mean I there are there are a lot of defenses that are also suspect in the AFC but there’s too many good offenses and just there’s only so much Josh Allen can do I do think it’s going to be somewhat of a concern and that’s a key there’s going to be someone that’s able to slow down Josh Allen you’re not going to have to slow him down much to outscore the Buffalo offense and you know supposedly the hand is fine there was a report he’s been dealing with a broken left hand all year long this guy gets banged around a lot and I think when the playoffs roll around they’ll throw caution to the win and they’ll have him run even more than usual he gets banged up at all more pressure on that defense and the season ends like that to me naughty and nice uh those numbers are real that you’ve mentioned they have some real issues on the defensive side but the thing they do better than anybody in the NFL is the turnover ratio they take the ball away and they protect it on the offensive side and they’ve been opportunistic on defense and that’s what they have to be and I think they’ve made a lot of difference making plays so I recognize the weaknesses but they’re also pretty nice taking it away and ultimately the ball the ball the ball is the difference between winning and losing ball games all right well we all up here are very nice we we try to give you a gift every single week by just having this football night in America P staying late for you we’re not watching the game over here over Jason shoulder that’s what we do Hey listen tonight attention he almost broke cuz you noticed that I was laser focused on you you almost started laughing I didn’t I didn’t want to be tempted by the game know the second half of the game is always playing over Jason’s shoulder and we all picked the Buccaneers yeah and it’s an issue cuz they asked me a question then they watched the game I mean I brought the pizza bread in here I thought it was going to be something we could bring us together I got a couple of Wagers going tonight I’m very interested in this game of crap all right we hope that you join us again if you celebrate Christmas have a merry we will see you next week we got the Falcons and the commanders on Sunday Night Football we’ll get you set at 700 Eastern for football night in America hi I’m Mike too and thanks for watching make sure to hit subscribe for the
