welcome back all right these are the last power rankings of 2024 this is it this the last one now not as much movement this week because there were fewer games so fewer games does mean less movement but not no movement definitely not no movement number 32 this week is proving that because number 32 is not the Buffalo Sabers it’s Detroit the Detroit Red Wings at the bottom of the board in 2024 I did not think I would see that happen again especially after how last season went I mean if we’re going to argue that well they they they weren’t going to be a playoff team this year okay I don’t think anybody saw this disaster that Detroit has been coming uh this is this has kind of been an absolute mess so maybe the coaching change will turn it around it did not on the first night though which is not usually how that works anyways number 31 also dropping one spot from last week San Jose and I had a hard time figuring out who should be number 32 between San Jose and Detroit and once again that seems kind of depressing it seems like something from four years ago to have these as the top bottom two teams on the board so hopefully things turn around for San Jose soon the difference being San Jose does feel like they’re building towards something uh Detroit has fallen away from what they were building towards very close to the playoffs last year and this year not really uh number 30 moving up two spots from last week the F4 mentioned sabes I feel like we’ve been here before the bottom three teams being Buffalo San Jose and Detroit this this feels very familiar and yet I got here organically I didn’t try to force that into being and for these three organizations and for their fan bases it’s too bad uh the Buffalo Sabers move up a couple of spots though they’ve won their last two games by a combined score what 28 to1 like it feels like it and so there has to be that frustration for Sabers fans like okay so they could have been a lot better than what they’ve been and yet there might be that little glimmer of hope is of hey if they can keep this going for a while and then and then you want to smack yourself don’t you uh number 29 same spot as last week Nashville uh Nashville does very well against teams that are pretty high up in the standings uh they don’t do well against teams that are not as evidenced by the 7even to four loss against St Louis the other night um you never know what you’re getting with them but at this point in time it definitely does not look like a playoff team uh that being said there’s still time to turn it around I mean technically number 28 Chicago uh the Chicago Blackhawk stay in the same spot as last week uh I don’t anticipate Chicago moving up necessarily um but Nashville could definitely push them down if Nashville continues to find ways to make some improvements here and there uh Chicago still in that rebuild we know that’s the case but it feels like things have been a little better for them so far this season than last season even though a coach has been fired and all that number 27 dropping one spot from last week the Anaheim Ducks uh the Ducks dropping further into the fourth row rather than moving up uh they have been in that third row this year but they are not there now so to round out the 2024 calendar year they find themselves 27th on the board so we’ll see if they stay there but they they definitely look like they might be in that fourth row for a while number 26 dropping three spots from last week when was the last time the Rangers were in the box botom row it’s been a while uh the New York Rangers just they they don’t look interested they they don’t look interested it’s is the best way that I can describe it uh the New York Rangers do not look like a team that has any interest in playing in the playoffs they don’t look like they have any interest in the regular season for the most part either uh they’ve they’ve played awful uh tonight against Tampa is another example special teams an absolute complete and total unmitigated failure and it drives them down into the bottom row uh the New York Rangers are they’re past being in trouble we’re now looking at the possibility that Chris jury does he blow it up does he go that far um it’s clear that there are players who don’t like the GM it’s clear there’s players that are not liked by the GM and that situation just does not work that’s a situation that has to be changed and so the New York Rangers are in the bottom row this week also in the bottom row dropping one spot from last week the New York Islanders so the Islanders drop into the bottom row um they did get the win tonight against Pittsburgh but they also lost that game seven to one against Buffalo which hurt them uh me means that they’re in the bottom row the rather than being out of the bottom row uh for the New York Islanders they’re they’ve got enough overtime and shootout loss points enough extra points to keep them mathematically close to a playoff spot I don’t know if they can get there they’re one game below NHL 500 at at this point even with all those extra time losses so we shall see but for now the Islanders uh are the leaders of that fourth row and this is a fourth row I I wouldn’t have imagined before the season started uh in the case of Nashville being here in the case of Detroit being at the bottom the Rangers being here absolutely stunning number 24 moving up one spot from last week Montreal yes yes they shut out Florida today that was great uh they also got beat by Columbus and so that kind of evens things out a little bit uh Montreal does move out of the bottom row I don’t think playoffs are in the offing for Montreal but they should be an above 500 team that’s what I said before the season started and so I will return to that uh now in that they should be an above 500 team and I don’t think they’re a playoff caliber team but they should be one that if you take them lightly uh then things like what happened today will continue to happen we’ll talk about Florida when we get get there though because that’s a bewildering team to watch uh but Montreal impressive win today and doish not bad uh moving up four spots from last week and the biggest mover is Columbus so Columbus moves up four spots uh they did lose today against Boston I did not punish them for that they had the win over Montreal they also had a win yesterday over Boston they just need to get better at home the the real truth of Columbus and I know when Patrick Li had his comments about Columbus and all this talk ah Colum is always mediocre and they’re terrible Columbus is good on the road they’re not good at home if they can pick up their home game they could very well be above the playoff line they really could and so maybe Columbus can start to do that although today’s game in Boston I mean and then they w at home so are things starting to to turn the other way no they’re good at home they’re bad on the road I’m so scatterbrain today I just think that this Christmas season has been it’s been a lot so I think I think my brain’s kind of fried just with a bunch of stuff that’s not related to the channel and so it’s it’s kind of hard for my brain to pick out other information from around all the other bewildering stuff that goes on so yeah Columbus 23rd they’re good at home they’re bad on the road this was a case of they’re good at home against Boston and then they go to Boston and it’s just it’s it’s not a good experience for them uh number 22 dropping one spot from last week St Louis uh the St Louis Blues are finding ways to get enough victories to keep themselves in the hunt they’re also losing enough games that they’re not finding themselves above the playoff line and so St Louis drops one spot from last week because they Dro to to get passed by one team which is Seattle so Seattle moves up the one spot that win over Vancouver big comeback Victory which I both rewarded them for and punished Vancouver for so kind of an all-around situation there uh but maybe Seattle can parlay that into something else uh in games going forward keep in mind other teams aren’t going to pass to Seattle like Vancouver did today so those gifted goals come on now it’s the holiday season at least send them a box of chocolates or something uh dear Tyler Meers how we love you signed the Seattle Kraken and they’re fans so yeah uh Seattle number 21 uh number 20 dropping one spot from last week Pittsburgh uh the Penguins rough and into the week with that 6 to3 loss against the New York Islanders Pittsburgh’s interesting they got above 500 they charged up to get to that record and it looked like they were just going to fly maybe get right above that playoff line and keep going and now they’ve had their stops and starts and so finding that consistency now to get themselves above the playoff lines become a challenge and it causes them to drop to 20 moving up to 19 and just switching spots with them the Philadelphia Flyers so Pittsburgh moves down one Philadelphia moves up one I was impr impressed by Philadelphia’s game today against Anaheim I know I know it’s Anaheim uh but Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are both at that NHL 500 Mark so they just kind of switch spots Pennsylvania 19 or 20 if you guys want to put Pittsburgh 19 and Philadelphia 20 you just go to your screen and no you can’t do that but yeah Philadelphia’s number 19 this week number 18 dropping one spot from last week Vancouver it’s tough Vancouver’s only lost 10 games in regulation and through what is it 35 games now that looks impressive but they’ve also won less than half of their games so it looks kind of impressive but at the same time Vancouver’s losing more often than they win and it causes them to be 18th on the board because I generally don’t move teams up when they’ve they’ve lost games and for Vancouver it’s it’s been very frustrating I think and I said this in the review for that game this morning that game against Seattle I haven’t been that angry at the canox since game one of the uh qualifying round against Minnesota I am just as angry as I was and I I think that anger is kind of carried over throughout the rest of the day um I’ve talked about that on the channel before how how a loss by a team I root for can kind of wreck the rest of my day that Vancouver loss and especially considering other things that have been going on too for me personally I just like yeah of course of course and that’s right after I watched Dallas blow a two-goal lead last night so it’s kind of become a thing for teams I root for and it’s not something that I’m I’m happy about I mean you know the extra points are fun and all but winds are better uh number 17 moving up one spot from last week Calgary so Calgary just switches spots with the Vancouver Conns Calgary gets a victory tonight against San Jose which was an impressive victory in that they had a bunch of shots and a scar off keeps it close but to me it did not warrant putting Calgary into the top half of the board so that’s your bottom 16 we’ll get into the top 16 how many Canadian teams are in the bottom 16 uh three yeah three Montreal Vancouver Calgary because one question that got asked to me in the live stream on Christmas day was you know how many Canadian teams do you think make the playoffs if the boards to be believed um four right four yeah four all right number 16 dropping one spot from last week is Utah uh Utah much like Pittsburgh a team that you know charges up get themselves close to a playoff spot and then just can’t quite get above that playoff line but I do like how Utah’s been playing I do think this is a team that could be a surprise playoff team and I would I would love that personally in fact if let’s just say Vegas was the number one seed in the west and Utah was the number two wild card and they play against each other I mean how fantastic would that be a firste franchise in Utah uh which of course is the roll over from the coyotes but playing against Vegas Vegas and Arizona don’t weren’t strangers to each other either so if I’m fantasy booking playoffs I’d love to see Utah against Vegas number 15 also dropping one spot from last week the Ottawa Senators so for the S uh they are in a playoff spot currently I don’t know how long they’re going to stay in that playoff spot uh they did get the two- nothing lead against Winnipeg Winnipeg’s a very good team with an excellent in fact it’s just a matter of these two teams getting ped by a team that had a pretty good week uh and also getting ped this week and dropping one spot Dallas yeah um Dallas that that blown two goal lead against Minnesota it’s just the latest of the this is how unpredictable this team is they can be very good one night you’re like all right they’re getting it all back together look at that Johnson’s playing well Robertson’s playing pretty well and the next night nope so so for Detroit or for Dallas they drop one spot they’re 14th on the board this week um still a playoff team I understand that they’ Fallen closer to the playoff line but they they do have games in hand on some of the teams that they’re after so I think that that’s kind of overblown just a little bit but they they do need to win a little more regularly than they have been number 13 moving up three spots from last week the Colorado Avalanche who this week gave Blackwood a 5year extension and I’ve seen people saying it’s too much time it’s too much money it’s $5.2 million for a guy that they’re envisioning as their starter in a league where now starters are getting $8 million plus so I’m not sure how blackwood’s either overpaid or the terms too long since goalies are getting 8-year deals so I honestly think that whenever a contract gets signed people will complain no matter what uh Colorado is on a bit of a winning streak at this point and blackwood’s play has definitely been a big part of how that’s turned things around um gorg’s numbers in San Jose have not been markedly better than they were in Colorado and yet blackwood’s numbers in Colorado have been markedly better than they were in San Jose and he already had good numbers in San Jose uh number 12 this week and dropping one spot from last week is Boston so consistency uh the loss to Columbus then the win against Columbus I end up dropping them one spot this week it’s nothing to be alarmed about um I I would like to see a more consistent effort from Boston but when the defense and the goal tending are good and they’ve been pretty good lately outside of that game last night against Columbus but in general they’ve been pretty good so uh Boston drops just the one spot this week because they were past the number 11 team on the board this week moving up one spot from last week is Minnesota the Minnesota Wild do get that comeback Victory against Dallas we shall see if that’s a sign that they’re playing better and things are going to start getting better for the Minnesota Wild this is a team that was number one on the board not too long ago and they have dropped precipitously over the last few weeks and now it is a matter of them making that climb back up it is easy to fall down that top 10 it is difficult to move back up the top 10 because your top 10 teams are usually playing pretty well uh which brings us to number 10 same spot as last week Carolina so they beat New Jersey tonight they lost to New Jersey the other night and for me with Carolina I feel like they’re in the right spot at 10th and so they didn’t move up tonight they didn’t drop tonight either and for Carolina the good news is they’re winning games with tokarski who I mean has played well I’m not saying he hasn’t but it bodess well for a Carolina team when tokari can come in and uh and win them some games because Anderson’s going to come back at some point and then it’ll be Anderson and ketov and you have to think that’ll probably be improved over toari or Spencer Martin when Martin’s called up that kind of thing but yeah uh 10th place this week for Carolina number nine this week same spot as last week Toronto so they beat Detroit and then they came home and they lost against Washington and I feel like again Toronto’s in the right spot uh the loss against Washington tonight shows me that Toronto isn’t quite at that level I understand they were without Matthews although being without Matthews the previous time they actually played really really well so Toronto is the last team that’s not in the top row I’ve seen some Lea fans saying I’m a hater I’ve seen Lea fans saying oh I’m done with you cuz you just you hate on the Leafs I’ve got them ninth if I hated on the Leafs I’d have them at 32nd and I’d find an argument every week for why they’re at 32nd I you just throw them in 30 second and go 1967 what are you going to do and move on if if if the hate was that strong and it’s not because there isn’t any uh because as I’ve pointed out to people before the better the Leafs do the better it is for the channel the better the channel does so especially in the playoffs if the Leafs get to say a Conference Final I’ll go buy a Ferrari I’m kidding it it wouldn’t do that but uh we could get another van I I don’t know anyways let’s move into the top row shall we uh number eight this week dropping four spots from last week Florida and the last time I had Florida down here I heard a lot about how much I hated Florida I don’t know whether the Florida fans are going to mind this time around so much what throws me with Florida is simple they either look excellent fantastic can’t miss the net it’s just great play or they’re terrible and they can’t hit the net at all and they get shut out I am alarmed at how many times Florida’s been shut out recently and it it’s just it’s baffling this team is too good to be getting shut out that regularly so it leads you to ask a question on whether this team is just going out there expecting the victories and not necessarily putting in all the work maybe all of this hockey they’ve played over the last two and a half years is starting to catch up with them it has caught up with teams before them who’ve had long long stretches too of you know a ton of Hockey being played in the playoffs you get those short off Seasons but yeah I I’m bewildered as to why it is that Florida has been getting shut out as many times as they have because just recently just off top of my head you’ve got Vancouver Tampa and now Montreal shutting them out so those are just recent ones off the top of my head number seven moving up one spot last from last week Tampa so the lightning are are now in the top row and they’re moving up in the top row and they’re playing well they they managed to make the Rangers look well like the Rangers have looked lately uh but the Special Teams two short-handed goals as well uh things are going well for Tampa and vasileski has started to put up vasilov like stats which is bad news for the rest of the National Hockey League so Tampa Bay they might just be a Stanley Cup Contender after all uh number six dropping one spot from last week the Edmonton Oilers uh the Oilers still playing really really well they lost today and it was a close game it was a tough game to for them but I did switch them spots with the team that was sixth coming into today’s action and so the Oilers Dro to sixth because fifth on the board is the LA Kings so the kings move into the top five and what’s interesting to me with the Kings is that I still see room for improvement so this is a team that I think I think they’re playing well not trying to say anything bad I just think there’s room for more Improvement for instance today you see bfield putting up some points Byfield should be doing that regularly so this is a team that if bfield really gets things going look out uh the LA Kings could end up being number one on this board but keep in mind when they were number one on the board last year they they had they had struggles after that so being number one on the board and I was told by by La people when I was down in Anaheim last February uh that as soon as they saw La number one on the board they knew the next week was going to be tough for them and it was so yeah anyways number four this week moving up three spots from last week the Winnipeg Jets the Jets are playing like the Jets now one thing that really impressed me with tonight’s game was they’re down to nothing against Ottawa there’s no Panic um they’re not trying to force plays they just keep playing their game and eventually they tie it and then they get the win so the Winnipeg Jets are playing quite well I am impressed with what they’ve been doing and they start moving back up the board as a result uh number three on the board this week and they had been number two at one point but tonight’s result moves them back down to number three and that’s the New Jersey Devils so that’s the second week in a row that they’re number three uh they beat Carolina then they lose against Carolina so uh that basically just leaves them in a holding pattern rather than having them move up to the number two spot which is where they were coming into today’s action so if I done the power rankings last night it would have been hey look New Jersey’s number two but this week they’re number three because Carolina uh beat them and uh that game wasn’t close I’ve seen Devils fans talking about other referees you know screwed them over I I’m not saying the officiating was great in the game but neither were the Devils uh that was Carolina’s game all the way through and uh that was an impressive performance by the canes number two this week Washington uh Capital staying in number two spot and so when we get to the four nations uh cup I’ll be doing like a a power rankings where I average where everybody’s been this year capitals are going to have a good chance of ending up being first if they keep playing the way they’ve been playing that win in Toronto tonight that was impressive and that was oetkin first game back he gets an empty Netter meaning they didn’t really need oetkin to win the game and that’s the that’s the scary thing they don’t really need ovin to win games and now they’ve got him back so yeah uh the capitals are number two which means number one same spot as last week Vegas Vegas has won five games in a row I think it’s five or six or something like that uh they’ve won nine out of their last 10 Vegas is playing the best hockey of anybody in the National Hockey League right now and they’re not relying just strictly on third period comebacks right now either uh they’re they’re just playing pretty darn well so for the Vegas golden knights the lucky aspect of it I think’s kind of been pulled away and they’re just they’re playing really really well there have been points this year where there might be some luck involved maybe they shouldn’t have won certain games that they did but now there’s there’s just wins being earned by the Vegas gold kns so they stay number one this week so not a lot of movement from last week definitely we’ll see more movement I would think in the coming weeks uh but keep in mind that as the season goes along and we start seeing spots getting more entrenched as to who’s above or below the line it gets more and more difficult for teams to move up or conversely to move down the board uh because of where they are and because of the overall picture of things and all that fun stuff so let me know your thoughts in the comment section below as always don’t forget to hit like And subscribe in the event that you may not have done so already seeing that there wasn’t much movement this week I I don’t know that there’s a fan base out there that’s going to be all angry but by all means prove me wrong uh thank you guys so much for all your support as always and I will talk to you again soon
