π΅οΈββοΈ Transcript:
we’ve had another very busy day of in NHL news and rumors tonight’s Rumor Mill focusing on teams like the Boston Bruins the New York Rangers as well as the St Louis Blues and in Vancouver some are starting to wonder can Patterson and Miller coexist we’ll discuss how that situation could play out in all the speculation since Miller’s return plus we had another busy day of NHL waiver wire activity we had a trade earlier today involving the duck sending Camp fou or at of town plus lots of other updates around NHL several injury updates uh and more coming up next so welcome back to another video here at Top Shelf hockey as I mentioned we have lots to get into here tonight all kinds of uh news and lots of interesting trade uh tidbits around the league of course we have a trade freeze or roster freeze if you will coming up December the 20th so there’s bound to be probably a little bit more activity here in the coming days as teams want to maybe try to get ahead of that uh December the 20th there’s what they call a holiday roster freeze for a week’s time where there can’t be any um any movement on on The rosters and that’s just to protect players from uh you know having to change cities and change teams uh you know during a time of year when most teams have at least a few days off to you know for the holidays and whatnot you imagine getting traded on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day or Boxing Day that would be uh terribly um you know upsetting for a lot of players so they tried they’ve been able to negotiate that into their collective bargaining so that does not happen now uh get started first with the news from the waiver wire earlier the Boston Bruins have a new player in his name it’s Oliver walstrom former first round pick of the New York Islanders who ended up on waivers yesterday along with veteran Pierre angal who’s got a long-term deal angal cleared no surprise nobody’s touching that contract but walstrom who only has this current year on his deal just around a million dollars um is a player teams are willing to take a chance on and of course Boston to me is a great fit uh you know a team that’s looking for um some secondary scoring looking for some help in that middle part of their lineup walstrom got history of being a shooter uh when he was in college and when he was younger that’s kind of what he was known for a lot of people thought back when he was drafted he might be the best pure shooter or sniper in that draft class hasn’t quite materialized he’s got over 200 games of NHL experience he’s got over 30 goals 70 points but nothing that’s really allowed him to be uh you know a consistent contributor and at times consistently even in the lineup so obviously the first start was greatly need it for uh for him and I’m glad to see him go obviously a place like Boston to me is a great fit um if you don’t recall Oliver walstrom uh who grew up in the New England area uh was made I think he was N9 or 10 years old I know there’s a video you can probably find it on YouTube if you type in Al walstrom at uh the DD Garden uh during the intermission was on the ice and doing uh some trick shots and he really he went viral like he was crazy skilled kid um no shock that he made it as far as he did but you know sometimes that high-end skill and these you know trick shots and all the things you can do with the puck you that’s never going to happen in the game right you never get the time and space and there’s always players attacking you it’s not the same thing it’s just putting on a show with the puck uh and a skills competition so some players struggle with that uh maybe that’s part of part of it for him I’m not sure but like I think a team like Boston will be a good fit for him the guy can shoot the puck uh really really well and if he can play with the right line mates and maybe get into different environment we’ll see if he can find it or not I mean the Islanders have struggled with some of their uh you know higher end prospects that were drafted making it like look at kef for Bellow another example you know just a bit older than wallstrom um was drafted with a lot of potential his dad was an NHL player looked really good I know in the world juniors remember when he was with Team USA looked phenomenal but just never materialized for whatever reason so the Islanders need some of those guys to to make it and to move up the ranks here and unfortunately walstrom just not not cutting it so we’ll see if he makes with the Bruins uh the trade we had earlier today of course Cam Fowler who’s been um you know in the rumor mill for being dealt for a number of weeks now goes to the St Louis Blues the Ducks had multiple offers and multiple deals in the last number of weeks of course he only had um four teams that were not blocked by his no trade clause we don’t know who those four teams were but majority of teams that were inquiring needed to be cleared through Fowler and obviously you know he had situations he liked more than others which kind of limited their return a little little bit but they do get some cap space um of course Fowlers nine game shy of a thousand same thing scenario happened to Cory Perry when the Ducks moved on from him as well uh so he goes to the blues along with a fourth round pick for a second round pick in a prospect a defensive prospect who was a threeyear Pros mostly played in the east coast League don’t think he can Bank on him developing into an NHL player if he does it’s a bonus but probably not going to happen uh so the Ducks you know not the fowers been amazing or anything like that I said when at first glance I thought it might be a little underwhelming but they do get a second round pick and they get some C flexibility um the Ducks did retain I believe it was $25 million on that deal as well so Fowler is finally moved will Gibson be next time we’ll tell uh into some other injury updates around the league we had yonas brodine and Matt zuk carella were activated by the Minnesota Wild today and it was expected that they would play this evening so it’s good for them the Maple Leafs got Bobby McMahon back today he was activated uh grankin was sent back to the honk League again uh the Leafs ended up unfortunately dropping tonight’s contest to the Detroit Red Wings I believe it was 4-2 final uh so the Red Wings pick up some much needed points after some struggles here lately uh in the Leafs uh even though they got uh you know a lot of healthy bodies back failed to pick up the key points in that division rival uh the Penguins tonight that were playing the Ottawa Senators they lost Marcus Patterson to injury I think I believe it was a second period if I’m not mistaken early in second um he just there was a battle on the boards he went in to help out his team just kind of stopped a little awkward went into the boards funny uh you could tell he was uh he hurt his leg in some capacity I don’t if it was a knee an ankle but something definitely lower body injury he didn’t return to the game he’s a player that’s uh you know obviously plays a lot of minutes for the Penguins he’s also a player that’s been very much mentioned in the rumor mill so uh obviously any trade talk around him will probably be put on hold for a little bit here and until we get a further update and see uh what the extent of that injury was now another injury that happened in that same game except it happened before it ever got started was s’s backup gooner Anton forsberg who was actually supposed to start tonight um during pregame warm-ups and not even like the actual warm-up on the ice but you know out in the dressing room or you know obviously sometimes in the back there when they do their different little games and things for warm-up he tweaked something we don’t know what it was but obviously he ended up um you know not able to go uh we don’t know what the injury was just that it was a tweak um and they had to playark who was who played last night in Carolina of course they’re on a backto back um obviously played in Carolina last night had to travel home and then play the Penguins tonight and allmark was excellent um and they got the back-to-back wins which is great for them first time this year they’ve won three straight games put them in a playoff spot for the first time in a while and the first time this late into the season that they’ve been in a playoff spot since 1617 when they had their crazy run all the way to the Eastern Conference Final into game seven double overtime against those same Penguins but forsberg on the other hand we don’t know what’s going to happen with him the SS have a gauntlet of a road trip coming up uh because Ottawa is hosting the World Junior Championships uh this year uh so they are away from home tonight was their last home game until I think it’s January the 8th or 9th or whatever it is uh they’ve got nine straight games on the road now there is a Christmas break in there uh they leave on I think it’s coming up they’ll probably travel Tuesday or maybe Monday I think they play Tuesday Thursday Saturday Sunday then they’re off for four days or whatever for the holidays then they come back and they have another back toback and another couple games uh I think actually it’s two sets of back Tob backs they have a lot of back Tob backs coming up here they have every weekend for the next like three weeks it’s except they have Christmas break in between it’s nuts so obviously forsberg’s injury they’re either going have to recall um one of their Prospect goali Le from the miners uh Mar Lina’s been playing real well lately which is great or will we see them make any another type of move I’m not sure um so anyways that’s the send go tending situation for the backup is now questionable so we’ll have to keep an eye on that um former NHL Justin Schultz who had a pretty long career we know earlier uh it was announced that earlier this year for not securing an NHL contract that Schultz ended up going over to Europe uh he was playing in Swiss League I think it was for HC Lano if I’m not mistaken Apparently after only playing eight games he’s said he’s done and he’s called it a career uh so Justin Schultz is now hanging him up he will be done uh we also had a signing if I’m not mistaken I think this came late yesterday after I done yesterday’s news video uh but the Vegas golden kns have extended uh bottom six centerman Keegan Kazar Kazar gets a three-year extension with a $2.5 million aav uh obviously that’s that’s pretty healthy coin for somebody in the bottom six but somebody who they’re quite happy with and has kind of been uh you know growing his role within the organization the past few years so pretty good signing there on him now as I mentioned in the rumor mill we got lots to talk about um some of this came from Elliot Freeman’s uh Saturday headlines segment some of it came from his 32 thoughts podcast came out yesterday and some of was from another source as well including uh day egona so let’s start with actually the uh the rumors from from Long Island uh pendon is saying that there’s a possibility here that we could see a regime change with the Long Island team here obviously Lou could be done um and done soon uh maybe is it at the end of the year do they make the move early to conduct their search I don’t know um they’re part of this why in my opinion if they’re planning on making a GM change um do they want him running the show for the trade deadline if they’re not going to be in the playoffs now the Islanders right now are in a situation where they just got passed uh here in the last couple of days like they’re not in a playoff spot today they’re they’re within Striking Distance if they have a good streak in them like we’ve seen the sends do uh the last three games they could get back in it there’s no doubt there’s only a couple of Point separation amongst like four teams or whatever it is um but the team has not done well so according to the uh report from panota he’s saying that essentially ownership is getting frustrated with the lack of improvement with the the team uh I think they’re probably also frustrated on the side not this is not his quote but I know attendance hasn’t been the greatest and is definitely down and that pays the bills and that helps them make money and I’m sure that you know these guys uh obviously they have laki and malcin both co-owners there uh I’m sure that the attendance numbers are probably starting to concern them they have a brand new building few years old and people are starting to be fat up and frustrated and not buying tickets like they used to um so clearly that’s a problem uh you know Lula Millo now well past his expiry date um you know probably needs to let somebody else take this team over and and I don’t know if he’s going to go down easy I know he’s he’s a well-respected guy going to be you know he’s a Hall of Famer there’s no doubt about anything like that but you know is he going to just hand over the Reigns willingly are they going to have to fire I I’d hope he would have the grace and dignity to be like okay you’re going to resign and just you know help them find the next person to run this team like obviously you can tell based on comments it sounds like he and Patrick W don’t eye to eye and everything and it’s it’s just time for change there um so with the with the report coming from Pano and nothing leaks out of the Islanders organization so interesting to see that Dave is talking about uh you know regime change there uh one the feeling kind of I got from the article was that if things aren’t progressing towards them being the playoffs that A change is going to happen and like I said most teams they don’t want a lame do GM running the show when they’re not going to be in the playoffs and they’re not going to be taking over next year cuz if you’re not going be in the playoffs it’s a prime opportunity to be a seller and they have some key pending ufas like guys like Nelson pal Mar and others that could be you know good trade pieces to bring in some Futures to kind of get this team retooling and you know are they going to want loyal Lou running that show I just I don’t see that being the case right so I do wonder if we could see a change behind um uh the front office there sooner than later I don’t know how eager they’re going to be but it’s the first time we’ve seen reports from a you know creditable Insider talking about how it could be coming so interesting and noteworthy and something definitely to watch here of course Ellie Freeman talked about a few teams on Saturday headlines making note again that the ranger struggles continue and that he said they’re definitely wide open for business outside of a couple of players like the ones they just extended with eigor shesterkin u Alexi lafer just extended on a long-term deal I don’t think there’s any desire to move him but most other players including the fact he made mention again Chris krider is 100% available so clearly they’re looking for significant retool change I know we’ve seen some talk about mik Savanah Jad to be honest he’s got a full no trade I I don’t know that he’s going to want to go anywhere I think you know Ryan lingren kandre Miller to some degree Adam Fox I don’t think Fox is going to want to leave if he can block a trade like trouba did uh obviously trouba eventually had to give up but you know I can see him staying he worked so hard to get to New York um you know going through multiple teams and refusing to sign before he got uh to be with the Rangers so you know some of these guys are not going to go easily or willingly but more change are coming and obviously like I said with the Rangers being known by Chris jury to the other GMS that he’s wide open for business and there’s very little he won’t consider we do expect to see more change coming I’d be curious to see just how much significant change they’re able to conduct another name to watch according to Freeman is Boston Bruins forward Trent Frederick of course the Bruins are on a western road trip have lost the first few games they’re only have a one point lead now on the Senators for third spot in the division the lightning are right there on their heels as well the lightning actually have the better shot of catching them because they got fewer games played so you know you’ve got there there’s not much security there like for those the big three in that division you got the Leafs and the Panthers have a have a decent lead right now but then you get the lightning and the sends right on their heels um so the Bruins are in danger from going from third down to like you know as low as fifth or sixth right so if they have a extended losing streak that could be all it takes so there’s lots of they’re getting tons of calls on Trent Frederick now doesn’t mean for sure they’re going to move him I I know they like Frederick but they have to ask themselves about the future about retooling and all that and like I said he’s a player that plays with a lot of grit a lot of feess has some scoring touch not afraid to drop the gloves there’s lots to like other teams really like this guy he’s a pained about to play against why wouldn’t you want them on your team so they’re they’re just inquiring so it doesn’t mean for sure they move them but the offers are rolling in the calls are rolling in uh teams want to know what their intentions are and you have to think that if their struggles continues that maybe that you know they might feel like they have to do something and maybe he’s a guy that goes I don’t know I just think he’s one of those energy glue guys that I think could be regretful if they move them but with the level of interest that there is they could also induce a bidding war and maybe get a Hu bigger than you would think return for him that could be something that we see too it’s hard to say but an interesting story to watch in St Louis as well uh there’s now reports that after picking up Cam Fowler today that they would really like to move Brandon sod uh sod has uh this year and one more year left I think it’s 4.5 million I believe his number is on his aav um you know he’s a pretty consistent 20 goal guy has lots of experience been around the league a long time obviously has some Stanley Cup championships to his name from his time in Chicago um so I’m not sure exactly what the blues the blues are kind of retooling here obviously the made a lot of moves and kind of re rechange his roster enough in the last year but um they continue to do that and sod is available I’ve seen it from some sources online and Freeman mentioned it in his segment tonight that they’re definitely uh out there having conversations and he is uh willing to work with them apparently it’s the conversation they’ve already had with sod he has a no trade but he’s willing to uh you know be flexible and talk with certain teams that he’d be willing to go to so like I said he’s not an expensive veteran somebody who can play in your top nine you know probably give you probably 20 goals if he continues to play at the same level and it’s not you know overly expensive so I I can’t imagine that they’ll have a too hard a time moving him but I look for a player like Brandon saw to be moved sometime soon whenever they find something that works for the team and the player and the big news out of Vancouver which seems to be getting a lot of attention is can JT Miller and allias Pon coexist uh I know personally I wondered the whole time that Miller was out I notic Pon played better and I mentioned this on the channel before it’s not like I’ve never talked about it um never made a big deal or did a dedicated video or anything like that but I honestly really think that those two are having difficulty coexisting and that can be problematic in your dresser room and it sounds like from the reports and what guys like Freedman are saying is that there might be a little bit of a divide and some people are taking sides that’s the last thing you want you don’t want to divide it locker room um now now before Miller went on his leave of absence where he was out for a month uh you know he had a couple of rough games he wasn’t he was benched by Rick tett in a critical part of a game uh and even made they were he was asked about it he said I want to give the ice time to the players I thought gave us the best chance to win and clearly JT Miller wasn’t on that list that given night now was every player on their top game every night no and you know whatever right um you know did talk it embarrass him though I I don’t really know how Miller felt about it he’s not going to talk about his leave either but Freeman made some interesting comments that just kind of made people go whoa maybe there is more to this and could this lead to and maybe not now but like in the offseason could we have to see the kanaks pick like it makes you wonder like Freeman said that you know Miller needs to uh bend a little and the other guys need to bend a little as well that he’s a unique um fit to their team they want to see if they can make it work uh he’s a unique player with a different kind of personality than the other guys and especially the other star players we know he’s super passionate wants to win pushes guys but some guys respond differently to different personalities and different ways of being pushed and different ways of trying to be motivated and be helpful and you know look at the Unexplained um I don’t know what you want to call it like the lower level of play from Alias Patterson it just seems like when Miller is there but I don’t know if for whatever reason it seems to impact Pon negatively I don’t get it but even if they don’t like each other which we don’t know I’m just speculating here I have no idea what they think of each other off the ice as people I have no idea what they think of each other as players but even if they don’t care for each other let’s just say I don’t see how one guy would just play like crap or really play at a lower level than you’re used to then that guy takes a leave of absence and like the level of play picked up it seem like he felt I don’t know it’s just it’s difficult to say but there there there’s definitely based on everybody that’s talking it sure sounds like this is not fake news this is something that there is to it and it’s an interesting story and concept that we’re going to have to follow here um I feel bad for The Connect they’re both terrific players uh they’re the top two centerman on this team if they had to lose one they’re they’re probably trades that they will struggle to win you quite often don’t win trades when you’re moving the best player in the deal um and it would deplete their lineup I mean even if things on paper look like they have a good deal coming back it’s not easy to do and if they’re you know might explain a lot of the uh like I said there was when when Miller was out and we heard numerous times like Jim Rutherford was pretty adamant he he wasn’t quite to the level that Michael landl was about Brady kajak but kind of a similar thing where he was pretty frustrated and pretty vocal saying it’s all Bs like you know that Miller’s absence has nothing to do with him not wanting to be here and there were some people that said that he didn’t want to be there and that that might have been part of it and that you know he was seriously thinking about wanting out and if you know Miller at some point is going to be like I am who I am I shouldn’t have to change you know I’ve been who I’ve been in this league a long time you know what what point is he going to say like either you love me the way I am or you move me you know so I don’t know I mean nobody’s talking this is all just spec ation but it sure sounds like these two players are not in a position where they can really coexist and it just it it could it could be you know really bad for this team if this is true and it sure seems like it so again based on the reports based on what I’ve seen with my own eyes based on watching them play and like he’s only back a couple of days and these things are already popping up so that’s not a good sign um you know winning solves everything though I will say that I’ve said that about other things like when the SS were pissed about the Brady kachuck stuff like well you want to shut people up and you want to get them talk stop talking about you about changes and make go win just go go get it done you know they’ve done that since I mean I’m not saying I’m not taking credit for their winning street but you know like that’s that’s essentially what you got to do uh and winning solves everything in Vancouver if they can see that they can both contribute in their own unique ways and make the team successful maybe they can look past whatever is going on here I don’t know it just seems to be odd and I I said I I just it’s hard to wrap your head around it and it’s uh I feel bad for the team because if they do end up in that predicament that somebody’s got to go I would imagine it would happen in the off season not during the season they got to try to get through this and um that just would Roy suck cuz I just don’t know how you win that deal so let me know your thoughts on what’s going on in Vancouver amongst these players and all the other deals and rumors around the league it’s been a busy time I expect there to be more activity in the next you know four 5 6 days here leading up to the NHL trade free for the holidays on December the 20th so let me know your thoughts on
