we have lots to talk about in today’s video including all the latest rumors around the NHL could the Vancouver connects be looking to make a big splash and could Chris kryder maybe be a target of theirs we’ll discuss the latest information on that front plus we get some big updates regarding Brady kach Chuck’s future in Ottawa from Elliot Freeman on Saturday headlines plus we have some more further updates on the New York Rangers and some other moves that might be in the works for them we have news from the NHL waiver wire several injury updates and a big update regarding players and there no move no trade Clauses that could be renegotiated in the next CBA apparently a lot of players have been upset with how things were handled by New York and the Jacob trouba situation we’ll discuss that and more coming up next so welcome back to another video here at topshelf hockey as I mentioned we have lot to discuss here this evening uh first up I want to acknowledge a major Milestone actually uh Los Angeles Kings Captain an copar is skating in game number 1,400 tonight that is an absolutely massive number phenomenal number a lot of guys you know struggle to even get to a th a th000 games is still quite an accomplishment in today’s NHL so 1400 is even that much more considering how you know long he’s played how durable he’s been um just a terrific you know long-term fixture there in Los Angeles so I just want to acknowledge that uh big milestone and uh sending congratulations his way on yet another big moment there um new the waiver wire today of course yesterday we had word that Brendan Lemieux the Carolina Hurricanes was on waivers and that was unconditional waivers for the purpose of contract termination the Carolina Hurricanes announced today that lemu did in fact clear no big surprise in that his contract has been terminated so he’s officially released from the Hurricanes according to NHL reports there is expectation that Lemieux will likely sign a contract in Europe it’s believed he’s probably heading to play in the Swiss league so we’ll see what the future holds for him some injury updates around the NHL Trevor zis is you know potentially looking at a longer term injury we don’t know the full extent of that he left the game a couple nights ago it looked like it could be bad but we haven’t had an official update from the Ducks Elite Freeman talked on that tonight on Saturday headlines I saying that we should have an update from the ducks on Saturday um it could be serious but we like said we don’t know maybe they’ll be lucky and he’ll dodge a bullet and only be out a short time he’s had a lot of injuries I feel bad for zrus who was playing very well at the time that it happened as well uh some other updates uh Pittsburgh’s newest pickup who has been on fire for the Philip thomasino uh is unfortunately going to be out with injury for a little bit upper body injury missed tonight’s game against the Maple Leaves which they did win um but he’s out dayto day so hard to say exact timeline but we’ll be out a little bit he’s been an extremely good fit and scoring some uh big goals for them since arriving in that trade with the Nashville Predators uh Montreal tonight had battled to Washington Capitals they did drop that game I believe it was 4-2 final score the HS had a two nothing lead early but the Capal stormed back and took that game uh they did get Kaden ghouly back in their lineup who had previously missed the previous game with an illness and in Toronto they had uh some new lines tonight some changes to their lineup uh the Leafs did drop that game to the Pittsburgh Penguins this evening but Max pater ready was activated from long-term injury reserve and was in the lineup uh know he started the game on a top line with Matthews and mner in Los Angeles Akil Thomas is another player who’s been out for a while also been activated off inur reserve and is ready to return uh now uh big update as well from Elliot Freeman on the Saturday headline segment they’re talking a bit about the kind of the Fallout here from the whole Jacob trouba situation of course this isn’t the first scenario that we’ve seen the New York Rangers operate in a you know shrewd businesslike Manner and at the end of the day no matter what we all think about this it is a St it is a business and sometimes teams have to take drastic measures to do what they feel is best for their teams but the thing that sucks about all this is that these players are they’re people too right and they have lives off the ice and it has a Major Impact sometimes on you know the effects from what teams want to do and you know in the case of Jacob trouba we know we talked last night about how he’s uh after he was interviewed by the Ducks um through um uh there an online meeting just so we could talk to the media answer questions kind of get introduced to the fans Etc and you know he had a lot to say um you know about how he was basically threatened uh that you know first it was you know accept this trade or you’re going to be scratched and then it was accept this trade or you’re going to be put on waivers and the thing is is like there’s a multiple methods of getting trade protection in your contract right now and what freedan was talking about on the Saturday headline segment is that even though the Rangers technically did nothing wrong here uh they didn’t break any rules but it’s it’s it’s not even really a loophole but I guess if you want to call it that it’s the closest thing you can describe it is that players can like I said there’s a no move clause which means you can’t move at all you can’t be traded and you can’t be put on waivers can’t go to the miners you can’t have any of that happen without you consenting to it and agreeing to it and waving that Clause then there’s a full no trade clause which means you can’t be traded to any team without your permission but it does not cover waivers because that’s a different transaction that’s only covered under a no move clause and then you have a modified no trade where there’s a specific number of teams that you can put your list in that you can block and that’s it so here’s the part that the players are upset about and it makes sense players are upset that you can say you have a I know a 10 or 15 team trade list that you can block and you put through that list when you are required to every year and but then let’s say for example you don’t want to go to the ducks and I’m just using that as a random example cuz trouba ended up going to the Ducks obviously he wanted to go there so it’s not picking on him in any way just random example so let’s say that your team wants to trade you to the Ducks and you have them on your list of teams you have blocked so they can’t do it and then they say well we’ll put you on waivers and Anaheim will pick you up I mean how is that fair right cuz you already have that team blocked so they’re upset about the fact that you know you can kind of use this as a around loophole type of thing kind of be dirty in a in a sense and like I said I think from a business standpoint everybody gets it but they’re just trying to protect themselves as people so he expects in the next CBA that the nhlpa is going to probably try to streamline the uhu the Clause protection in contracts and the wording around what could be done and not be done and I would suspect that you know either there’s going to be a case where instead of having no move and no trade maybe make it a little bit more simple and just have it that certain teams are blocked and that’s it either you can block everybody or you can block a certain number and that once that team is blocked you’re blocked from Trading them and blocked from being picked up through waivers now that might may or may not end up being negotiated in that may or may not fly I don’t know how the league and the owners are going to feel about that cuz clearly that takes away that loophole from their teams to get a a work around or they may just say like you know I’m not really sure how I feel about it cuz to be honest like I think no move Clauses should be reserved for the only the absolute top talent and I think teams negotiate these trade protections too much I think there’s too much of it out there you look at other leagues and it’s not nearly to the same level it’s only reserved for more top tier Talent whereas you can have somebody playing on the third line or their third line of like third pair D might have a modified known trade I mean that I think it’s ridiculous you know you’re professional athlete and you know this is something that it it makes player movement difficult and you would think as a league you’d want to encourage more of that it makes your league a lot more interesting I think I mean look at the big trades and signings we see like in the NBA and stuff like it’s a it just there’s a lot it’s a lot more from an entertainment perspective you know from the fans that keep things um fresh and interesting in that sense but I do get it from the players perspective why they’d be frustrated like I have the team blocked so I can’t be traded there but you can put me on waivers and they can pick me up that’s not right so anyways look for that to be one of the bones of contention and one of the items that is going to be heavily discussed in the next CBA negotiations will be kicking off here early sometime in the new year they’re trying to get ahead of things so they can hopefully come to an agreement um with enough time to make sure that there’s you know no uh labor stoppage and we’ve had a good labor piece in the NHL and the PA for quite a while and i’ like to keep it that way listening to Gary bman talk and even the new uh uh you know leader for the PA it sounds like um you know things are as best as they’ve been in a long time so we want to make sure it certainly stays that way now one other big rumor I want to take a look at here as well it’s not something that could happen now but it’s something that almost happened before comes from Jeff Mir formerly of sports n in case you missed it Jeff is Now with uh daily face off and has his own show called the sheet it’s a daily program on an I think it’s 3:00 Eastern time also available in podcast form uh great program very similar to what he used to have as a Jeff Merck show on Sports night last year and he was talking about the fact of the the Oilers how they had broberg and hallay get offer sheet and then end up with the blues right so we know the blues were successful those guys are there they’re contributing things are working out quite nicely for them he says that the St Louis Blues were not the only team that was ready able and willing to offer sheet these guys and it was always going to be done as a pair to make sure that the Oilers were really handcuffed and didn’t have an easy way out to make sure that was going to be successful he says there was at least two other teams that were in this predicament that were seriously considering doing it obviously the blues beat them to it and got it done but that he he doesn’t know who the third team was but he does know that one of them he says is definitely was the Calgary Flames so can you imagine if broberg and hallay switch sides in the battle ble of Alberta that would have been extremely interesting would have spiced things up you know quite substantially there so of course tonight broberg and Holloway make the return to Edmonton as the blues visit the Edmonton Oilers um obviously like I said they’re contributing well I’m sure they’re going to want to put on a good performance to show the Oilers that you know they shouldn’t have let them go that they’re obviously uh you know make them regret it that’s always players always want to show up their old teams right that’s usually a given a not front but interesting to see that the Battle of Alberta could have been extremely a lot more spicy had the Flames been successful team to do the offer sheet here instead of the Blues now for all we know we don’t know for sure how things went cuz a lot of times when offer sheets are sometimes presented but if they don’t get signed you don’t usually hear about them sometimes a long ways down the road something will leak out that had almost happened or whatever but um you know sometimes uh how do we know for sure that the Flames didn’t actually submit offer sheeps maybe the blues offered more money and they went in that direction instead I’m not sure but uh just an interesting nugget there from Merck that could have really spiced up that battle now a couple other things I want to talk about as well one uh we know that the for nation faceof rosters were announced here recently in the last few days um lots of players that were in the conversation you know some I guess were using the word that got snubbed um you know Canada and us have so many good players you know that you can easily submit two teams right uh even if look even putting together a team of the so-called snubbed players there’s still guys that are being left off that are people are going like oh my Lord like I can’t believe this guy did make that second team and that whatever right there’s just so much deep Talent um so apparently Hockey Canada contacted not only the players who made it but they contacted a bunch of extra players believed to be I think around anywhere from 8 to 10 I’ve heard as many as 12 I don’t know what the exact number really is but somewhere at least will say that are basically told you were in the mix um unfortunately we you know we didn’t get a roster spot for you but we’d like you to be on standby in case of injury cuz we know that you know there’s still a good stretch of time here there’s lots of hockey left wouldn’t be shocking if every country had to make a change or two because of injuries right so there’s that now one thing I know one player that I know a lot of fans were intrigued about especially Montreal being such a large fan base was Nick Suzuki now according to these reports of the players that were not on a roster but were contacted about being kind of you know on reserve on standby Etc Nick Suzuki was not one of them and people are speculating that the reason for that and if you remember back at the end of last season as the regular season was coming to an end and of course we know that the World Championships are always every year in May in teams that are out of the playoffs you usually get a good amount of players that go over and participate sometimes players that are eliminated early in the first round maybe early second round sometimes go over as well because the tournament’s not done yet and represent their countries well last year Nick Suzuki was invited by Hockey Canada and he decided not to go now we had heard speculation before that with with these international events coming up that Hockey Canada was going to be um you know encouraging people if you want to be considered for the four nations in the Olympics then we’d really like to see you accept the invitation to the World Championships if if you’re able to go now Suzuki to the best of my knowledge declined I I don’t believe there was any injury or anything that I’m aware of so there some are saying that that’s the reason that he kind of you know pulled himself out of the Running by not going to that I don’t know anyway some people think it’s Petty some people think it’s dumb I think if he would have been you know if he was because it’s such a deep country of players if they really wanted him that bad and he really would have been that level of an elite player I think he would have went anyways to be honest um I think that was probably more of an encouragement for the players that might be you know you’re you know you’re not guys that are far from a guaranteed spot cuz if you look at all the players that could be a potential like third fourth line player or like you know your 5 six s defense there’s a ton of guys there that would make up that potential list so you know they obviously get with a guy like Anthony Celli but you look at like there was options like you know Ryan O’Reilly John Taris uh you know other guys that were you know would be a really good uh defensive centerman you know so really you know Suzuki was probably probably was in the mix but obviously not as well you know thought of in high on the list as a lot of fans might have thought so um apparently that’s what’s out there that it had to do with that we’ll see what happens I don’t know if we’ll ever get a confirmation of that hard to say I mean we’ll see if there are injuries in Canada does have to make any Replacements who L people end up being but again um I would suspect that you there’s still some other bigger names I would think would be picked ahead of them anyway so we’ll see what happens um so other updates regarding some trades I want to start first with Ottawa cuz obviously you know during the Ranger stuff there on Friday with the trouba trade and the eagle shurin signing of course the New York Post before the trooper trade was completed put that big article out saying that the Rangers are targeting Brady and of course we talked about it last night again I had some people leave comments again hey br’s not going anywhere stop talking about this I’m like yeah I know Brady’s not going anywhere that’s not what I’m saying the fact is it was a big story in a major newspaper publication so it’s out there I want to talk about it and give my opinion on it and we also know that uh some other you know well-respected reporters have said it was complete BS it wasn’t going anywhere and the SS were quite pissed about it uh Steve stalos reportedly even made a call to Chris jury he was like ask where this information is coming from saying like you know we’ve never had these discussions like what’s going on so again the only reason I’m bringing it up again here because it was a a Hot Topic on Freeman’s Saturday headline segment he was talking about the fact how uh the Ottawa Senators are quite confident very confident in their relationship with Brady kachu and the fact that they have no intention to trade him nor does he want to be traded um they said you know he’s he’s under contract for three more years and they have no reason to think that he’s not going to finish out that contract and hopefully stay even longer so they I guess what Steve stos is telling fredman is that they feel really really good about where things are at and the direction of the team team and how he feels about everything that they’re not concerned about him wanting to be treated for one and secondly they would never do it and on their own without his like without his wishes anyway like I said before I’ve said it numerous times the only way Brady kachak ever is traded by the Senators is if he goes and demands it and we have no reason to think that’s the case now Brady also recently completed an interview I think it was a little while back towards the beginning of the season but Frank SAR Valley have da face off has a series called Frankly Speaking uh and he put out some uh he he interviewed Brady recently and put out some clips of that as well and he asked him the same thing about all the noise and you know how these rumors keep popping up at least once a year and you know again you know they’re all kind of you know said it was don’t understand where it’s coming from it’s nothing to it so enough sources have said listen like this is this is garbage it’s complete BS Brady doesn’t want to leave Ottawa and Ottawa doesn’t want Brady to leave either so it’s all in the end of the day just you know people causing a things and I was like you know what but the way Freeman was talking about on the segment was like unfortunately um when a team is not having the level of success that they want and things aren’t going as well you’re going to get rumors from different media different fan bases about you know players that other teams like and are there 31 other teams that would love to have Brady kachu absolutely there are so I mean you know when that’s that’s just it’s just how things go right like a lot of the rumors that we sometimes talk about stem from media members putting out either written or you know uh reports or made appearances talking about oh yeah I think this team should you know Target this guy because that team’s not doing well they probably want to make changes and that’s just how things get going right uh that’s what media does so on this channel we take what they’re saying kind of analyze it talk about how realistic it is I’ll either say I think they should do it or I think it’s uh something they shouldn’t do and there are times that I’m going to say it’s completely ridiculous this is not happening but I want to discuss it to give my two cents on it cuz that’s what I do so at the end of the day for those that are concerned about Brady you shouldn’t be in the segment from Elite free been on Saturday headlines T night more than confirms that if yesterday’s news didn’t all now some other stuff I know with talking with the Rangers though one name that they reportedly are interested in is a reunion with former Ranger Frank frano with the Anaheim Ducks now that came from rj.com um Jim baringer talking about that he believes that there is interest there again the Ducks are a team that you know like Ottawa and some other teams haven’t had the success they want so there’s going to be lots of talk and teams are probably eyeing their players and we know that the Rangers have history with vatrano nobody’s capable of he’s done very well since he’s landed in Anaheim as well so you know with the Rangers being very you know expected to be very active here um that could be a scenario that we look to see and staying with the Rangers there was also reports from rck Dolly wall another respected Source uh who obviously covers the Canucks um he said that the Vancouver canox and general maner Patrick Alvine seemed interested in getting involved in the Chris krider sweep Stakes now there’s no guarantee that the Rangers move kryder but we had heard originally the the first report from Elliot Freeman which I think is probably about 10 days ago or more now um when he said that the Rangers have made it known to the other 31 teams that they’re open for business and Veteran guys like krider and trouba are very much available yes they have trade protection but you know doesn’t mean they can’t find a way to make a deal and we just seen the trouba deal go down within a week or so later so clearly that report was accurate clearly they’re very much doing what the reporters are hearing that they are doing so Chris kryder not guaranteed to be traded he does have some trade protection but as Dolly wall was talking about um when it became you know out there and became uh news that he’s available that the Rangers are willing to take calls on him and and try to find a deal that the Canucks were interested and you know made their due diligence here and made their calls now he says that because of the trade protection that crrider has uh he doesn’t think the talks went too far uh so led him to think that the Knacks are probably on the list of teams that Chris krider can block so again um because of that doesn’t think talks got too serious but the fact that they were inquiring on Chris krider certainly is very interesting uh we know that the Rangers have been rumored to have tons of interest in bringing back JT Miller we also know that the Canucks have been pretty hard stad here that they’re not moving Miller that his absence from the team have nothing to do with a trade being being wanted either by the team or by the player so again they’ve been denying that they’ve denied it some more uh again um so you know we’ll we’ll take the word for it for the time being um but yeah that’s certainly something that would be interesting now of course with Chris krider you know he’s also like I said a veteran guy played in New York his whole career um I don’t know he probably doesn’t really want to leave New York so he’s probably going to do like Jacob trouba everything in his power to block trades now if this doesn’t work out for Vancouver and it’s looking like it’s not going to it just goes to show you though if they’re having conversations to see if that’s a possibility bring him in that they’re obviously wanting to make a big move and that they’re going to probably turn their sites elsewhere so again Vancouver hoping to get Miller back soon and it goes to show you that like last year they very much feel like they can contend this year and I would expect them uh to turn her attention to another top player as the season goes along if it’s certainly looking pretty likely and it does now that krider won’t be somebody that can really pick up because it’s not going to work out because of his trade protection so um shows that they’re serious and we should expect something from them I know we’ve heard about Nils hoglander being available we’ve also heard that they want to add on the blue line of course especially with some injuries back there now makes sense that a blue line acquisition might be top priority so we will see where things go it’s really hard to imagine Chris krider in a conu jersey but crazier things have happened let me know your thoughts and all of today’s
