we have lots to talk about in today’s video including the latest trade rumors around the NHL lots of talk around the New York Rangers the team continues to struggle Now find himself at the bottom of the Eastern Conference the latest reports indicate we could see some major names leave the Rangers roster it sounds like the players are going to be the ones getting most of the changes not necessarily behind the bench or in the front office plus could the Ottawa Senators find themselves in a position to add Elliot Freeman reports that the s likely want to reward this roster with how well they’ve played this year plus we have yesie POI on waivers from the Pittsburgh Penguins more updates including the Dallas Stars facing a significant fine for CBA violation some big injury updates some fines from player safety and more coming up next so welcome back to another video here at topshelf hockey as I mention we have all kinds of new stories to follow here today including some big rumors around the New York Rangers some tree talk around Autobot Senators as well but first we have some other uh quick hits here to get through before we jump into the rumor mill first up today we have uh some new waiver wire activity the Pittsburgh Penguins have placed forward Jessie povi on waivers he’s in the final year of a two-year contract that he signed with an $800,000 annual cap hit uh povy hasn’t really ever lived up to expectations in this time in the NHL from an offensive standpoint his defensive metrics tend to be usually pretty solid uh this this year he has eight points in 21 games for Pittsburgh um but again he’s kind of been a player that’s you know he’s not in the lineup consistently uh and somebody that’s kind of you know teetering right he’s he’s not really getting the job done being consistent with his play uh so the penguins are ready to move on if if need be if if not they’ll send them to the American Hockey League I wouldn’t be shocked if somebody picks up poar throughout his entire career uh he has typically been known as a pretty responsible defensive player who can actually play bottom six minutes he’s got good size um but unfortunately for a really high draft pick he’s never really fully lived up to expectations and never really you know fulfilled that kind of role that he was expected or thought that could be when he was drafted it just it’s not his fault he was drafted as high as he was clearly but things have not panned out well for the finished player here but he’s you know he’s one of those guys has a big smile you a good teammate I I do wonder he’s gone through three teams now had a short stint in Carolina then went to Pittsburgh where he’s been for last year in this year um I wonder will he get a fourth opportunity with a new franchise for a fresh start we’ll find out if he gets picked up tomorrow afternoon if not um we’ll see what the future holds for p Arvy and whether or not that’s in Pittsburgh or somewhere else as I’ve been mentioning the last couple of days there’s been expectations that the Dallas Stars are going to be facing a fairly significant fine for a CBA V violation uh because of a December 26 practice and that appears to be the case uh there is reports down today that the Dallas Stars have been finded $100,000 of course in case you missed the the previous story essentially what happened was over the Christmas holidays uh there is three days mandated off between by part part of the CBA between the NHL and the pa uh the players get the 24th 25th and 26th off completely there is no practices no ice time no travel no nothing on those three days they are three full mandated days off the NHL has it worded in there that if they decide to schedule games on boxing day that instead the players get the 23rd 24th 25th off well that wasn’t the case this year so 24 25th 26 days off and the Dallas Stars held an optional practice on the 26 coaches on the ice um you know it was an official practice even though players were not you know considered to be mandatory to be there doesn’t does matter uh they’re not even allowed during those 3 days to ask them for consent to do these types of activities so um you know even if the players are fine with it it it doesn’t matter it’s the fact that everybody’s supposed to have a level and even playing field these are mandated days off and it’s a you know it’s it’s definitely a big no no so at the end of the day like I said that’s why would you see when play resumes on the 27th that teams are traveling that day they’re not even allowed to travel like at the night of the 26 to get into their city where they’re playing it’s uh you know between the practicing and the traveling it’s just that so everybody’s on the same playing field uh after a break so the dallar stars are fine $100,000 as expected there we did get a fairly significant update from Darren Dreger on one of the players I know the the canox have been without Quinn Hughes and El pson we’re now on Hughes is that he could be out upwards of three weeks um so I know we’re not getting a lot of details I find this year I’m maybe it’s just me but I find teams are being even more secretive with injury information more than ever getting less and less stuff a lot of players are dayto day and then they end up missing two three weeks like it just doesn’t make sense uh we’re not always getting those types of reports but uh it sounds like the connects Captain not going to be a super long term but you know when a team is you know kind of hovering uh in under mediocrity and kind of you know not in a real safe spot playoff wise and whatnot like you know losing a key player for you know 2 3 weeks is is significant so that’s a big blow for Vancouver a couple of updates from the Department of NHL player safety we have a couple of fines here today for Action that took place here on the weekend we have Pat maroon the Chicago Blackhawks fine $3,385 for elbowing uh which happened against the Dallas Stars and young forward Maverick bour so he’s faced a fine for that and Matt vay mitchoff in last night’s action fined $2,473 for a high sticking in inent that took place with Kings Ford Quinton Byfield so a couple of fines there um the maple Le today reassigned Matt Murray back down to the Toronto Marley’s in the American Hockey League and I’ve recalled Dennis hild Toby um I I’m not to say that Murray won’t get another opportunity but fair to say that his second start didn’t quite go as well as they had hoped I know the first time around he um I don’t think he was phenomenal but he got the job done they picked up to win the second time it was uh not as good and they ended up getting the loss um so they’ll go back to hild Toby here uh obviously you know we’ll see when stolar returns obviously that’ll kind of change things again but for right now mie goes back down to the minor leagues now another quick story here as well former Blackhawks Captain Jonathan Taves who’s been out of the NHL for a little while conducted an interview with GQ Magazine uh talked a lot about uh his health and everything that he went through um you know obviously dating back the last number of years um but one thing that he did say in the interview that kind of has gotten a lot of people’s attention and I guess we’ll have to wait and see how things go but he says that he doesn’t feel like his career is completely over and obviously seems interested in making a comeback so obviously Jonathan Taves is was a terrific athlete terrific player accomplished a lot especially early in his career uh was highly regarded as one of the games top two-way players uh won three Stanley Cups with the Chicago Blackhawks of course the Blackhawks made it clear a couple years back that uh the contracts for Jonathan Tav and Patrick Kane which they signed matching deals uh all those years ago when they were set to expire that neither player was going to be offered a contract extension uh Patrick Keane essentially was traded to the Rangers and then has played the past couple of years after that with the Red Wings whereas Jonathan Taves has been out of the game uh so obviously we don’t know you know if or when he’ll come back for sure uh if so you know is he open to playing somewhere else cuz it didn’t seem like the Blackhawks were interested in bringing either veteran player back I don’t know if anything’s changed on their part that way but uh be curious to see if I’m not sure if it’ll be this year he didn’t really give any details I would suspect more than anything that you know that would probably be more like next year and would he sign a contract when he get a PTO it’s really up in the air but I guess the moral the story here is for right now we may not have seen the end or the last of Jonathan Taves and and as we get closer to the Winter Classic which of course goes tomorrow between the Blackhawks and the St Louis Blues I know Elliot Freeman was talking on his 32 thoughts podcast today indic because we had reports before as well from other sources saying that he does expect Florida to get an outdoor game sometime in the near future uh may not necessarily be the Winter Classic but an outdoor game of some sort um and obviously he was also also talking about just a lot they they spent probably you know a good little stretch there talking about outdoor games and the history and trivia and all that kind of stuff and one thing that he said one of the uh sources or Executives around the league that mentioned to him that they wondered sometime in the next year or so before it’s before both players are done in the NHL wondering if they would do any kind of oetkin Crosby um you know kind of send off if you will um you know before their careers are over to get them involved in one last one uh obviously we know with oetkin contract and him closing in on Gretzky’s record you know a lot of people expect that next year might be ob’s last year NL that’s not a given per se I mean we don’t know that oetkin has made it clear that he would love to have an opportunity to play in Russia in the KHL um to be closer to family and stuff before his career is over so uh most people kind of assume that when this current contract expired that that’s what would end up happening but again that’s not you know confirmed by any means we don’t know that um and just some speculation there on Freeman’s part based on what uh one of his Executives that around the lead that he was talking to mentioned to him so we’ll see I mean that would be an interesting uh concept I think both those teams are in different spots right now the capital is actually having a really good year and the penguins are you know kind of teetering on mediocrity again and looking like they’re probably going to be near the top of the teams that missed the playoffs uh so you’re not good good enough to get in and you’re not bad enough to get a really high pick which is unfortunate cuz to me the Penguins need those High picks that they were fortunate enough to get early in the careers when they got Crosby and Mark Andre flurry and all those guys that kind of Kickstart what they built to be I’m one of the greatest teams there over you know a 10 15E span so we’ll see what happens but obviously lots of outdoor games coming here in the near future be curious to see if Crosby and noet can get involved in one last one before their careers are up now on the rumor mill uh they touched on a variety of things in the 32 thoughts podcast I want to spend time mainly focusing on two things only a little bit here in the Senators and we’re mostly going to talk about the Rangers um Freeman talks about how the Senators have certainly kind of gotten things figured out this year obviously they’re dealing with some injuries especially to starting gooner lenus alark right now but um you know lovey marilan has filled in admirably on a couple of occasions now had two really good games where he started and one came in a relief on the game that allar got hurt and played very well in that game as well unfortunately the SS didn’t pick up the win in that game against the Edmonton Oilers but it was a close game it was a 3-1 game uh the SS were certainly in it right till the very end so it’s not like it was a really poor game or anything uh so overall Marlin in his short small body of work here has done well mad sogard in the one game that he appeared in not so good gave up four goals they lost the game but at the end of the day they’ve been a lot better uh their record in December has been phenomenal since November the 25th uh the Senators are rap uh with the Washington Capitals for being the top team in the Eastern Conference now unfortunately their November wasn’t um better otherwise they would be in a more solid spot near the top of the division instead of in a wild card spot as we uh approach New Year’s here but for right now um Freedman says that he expects Steve stos to reward this team because of how well they’ve played and the improvements that they’ve made that he expect them to to see you know especially being a former player and knowing what it’s like um and the other thing too is that this this group of managers and ownership there like this this whole new team leading the Senators want to continue and get the point across and prove that they are not like the old uh regime here um that they are willing to spend and willing to add and willing to give this team what it needs now he didn’t specify any particular players that they were targeting or anything of that nature just that he expects stos to uh to consider adding in the near future uh they’ve played well enough to get into these play he didn’t basically to me what he was saying was that they’ve played well enough so far to get into this playoff spot they want to make sure that they continue to manage the roster so they continue to hold that down and make it more solid that you wouldn’t want to see uh case if you know if they run into any more injuries or anything and they end up slipping down you know that with the if the management team has a chance to add that something that he expects them to do now one big question mark is David Pon of course early in the season Pon you know got derailed because of having to take a leave of absence uh he and his wife had a very complicated uh pregnancy and birth of their third child so that was you know keeping him out of action for a number of weeks and then he returned only played a short spell and then he got hurt and there’s word he’s dealing with a back injury his injury status has been a little bit unclear um so obviously you know the longer he’s going to be out I don’t know if you know there’s any chance at all that you know he’s dealing with a longer term thing if he were to be shut down uh if they would have that extra cap space to be able to make a move cuz the Ottawa Senators in my opinion from watching them closely they they really need another top six forward you know they’ve had you know kachak stla Norris bson um you know jaru has been uh nice in those top two lines but you know they’re always looking for it’s either usually either Adam godette or Ridley Greg going into the top six um and they both have done well at times I don’t know that they either one of them are really a especially Ridley uh I don’t know that he’s ready to be a consistent top six forward if you can have them play in your bottom six continuously uh and to have more secondary scoring there and add in another scoring Winger that can strengthen those top two lines then their team would be so much stronger in spread out with the scoring now Michael amadio is also injured uh he’s dealing with a concussion we don’t have a timeline on him right now uh Aram Zu on the other hand has started skating and is expected to be back sometime on this road trip possibly even the next game against the Dallas Stars here they have three days off so not a given Zoo plays in Dallas but uh the fact that he’s with the team on the road trip and has skated today in a regular contact Jersey is very promising um you know they have an opportunity to to get another practice or two in before they play so I suspect Zu likely comes back this week but we’ll have to wait and see but certainly see hearing that Freeman expects stals to add I think would come as a a nice reward to those players who have certainly like I said figured out a style of game that works for them uh defensively they’re they’re playing a lot more responsible uh and they’re still getting the offense they’re the scoring is probably down a little bit but they’re also giving up a far far less as well and has allowed them to kind of hang around in a lot more games and kind of win more of a year 2-1 3-1 you know they’re playing more of a playoff Style game to be completely honest which is going to help them if they do make the playoffs to be better prepared now and the big story continues to be the New York Rangers uh frean on his podcast spent lengthy time talking about it plus we’ve also got a a scathing article from the New York Post and Larry Brooks and Freeman said again on his podcast referenced to the article saying that nobody has better sources from the Rangers than Larry Brooks uh Dave panota the fourth period.com also has an article out about all this today as well so it’s they continue to be that the talk of the NHL as this is a fall from grace that’s kind of completely imploded here you know uh there was a point where everybody thought early in the year they were going to be not only a top three team but contend for the division uh lead uh to be first and now they find themselves dead last they’re last in the Metro Division and uh almost dead last in the the whole conference so certainly it it’s a complete 360 for this team you watch them play they look disinterested uh the report from the or the article from the New York Post basically says that the players have quit on this franchise and on this coach uh Brooks expects it to co cost the job of Lobby a lot here eventually based on the article and what the Freeman and Pon are saying it doesn’t sound like panota is in real serious danger getting let go like here in a very very short term uh based on my interpretation of everything I think it’s possible that you know maybe later in the year or at the end of the year maybe things change but it sounds like for the short term uh that jury and Lavette are going to be probably be given an opportunity to try to get themselves out of this and jury is going to have to make some big moves so it sounds like the players are the most likely group here that kind of pay the price and have the most change so obviously Freeman makes mention of some names including M Saban J he references M as somebody who could certainly you know obviously really benefit from moving along obviously his season has not gone well you can tell by his facial expressions on the bench on the ice it just like everything has gone wrong uh there’s been times where I swear he looked like he was going to cry cuz it’s been that poorly um you know obviously Freeman doesn’t goes on to say that he doesn’t know 100% that the Rangers are going to approach me because he does have a full no move Clause but you know that uh he very well could be the next major Domino to fall in the Big Apple uh of course I know Dave Pagoda in his article referenced the fact that his sources told him that Savannah Jed would be willing to wave as no move for some teams in the right situation so clearly it sounds like it’s not a given in what Elli had mentioned as well which is like we’ve seen the Rangers go about some of these cases of uh trade protection no move Clauses you know saying if you you’re either going to work with us or we’re going to go do this the hard way and you know obviously Nam mik has no move they can’t put him on waivers uh they can’t go about things the dirty way like they did to some of the other players here cuz he has more protection in his contract doesn’t mean they can’t do other things they can healthy scratch him they can reduce his ice time uh there’s all kinds of things they can do to make him miserable and be like okay just to make him tap out and scream Uncle here so he wants to move along um you know we’ve heard Chris kryder’s name from the beginning uh when this all started to the break that kryder and trouba were available uh you know we’ve heard about K Andre Miller we’ve heard maybe Ryan lingren we’ve heard Sam Carrick Riley Smith um you know lots of names there that are you know potential trade pieces so we we heard Lots about Capal kaco and Jacob trouba before they were moved uh but it’s believed that this roster by Chris Drury is expected to go through extensive surgery and major moves are likely going to be coming here in the near future uh of course you know like tonight they’re playing the Florida Panthers it was two nothing very quickly um the team just doesn’t seem to be able to get themselves out of this funk like I said when you watch them play you you it’s not difficult to say and think that they have quit on themselves and they’ve quit on this coach and it’s without going through more change and more pain it’s hard to imagine them really getting themselves out of this I know Elliot Freeman did mention one name that he would expect if they were available that would be teams would go through um you know great exercises trying to figure out getting him but it would be Vinnie troak but he doesn’t expect troak to be one of the players available you could probably say the same thing about laf rineer uh I think they’re they’re probably two of the forwards obviously that are um not as likely or not uh expected to be part of any trades uh same with shurin but just about everybody body else they are wide open for business like I said you look at Carrick and Riley Smith who probably those two guys likely not going to be there Beyond this year anyways uh you know whether it be kandre Miller Ryan lingren who very well may not return he’s on a one-year deal as well and then kryder and Savannah Jad you know if they’re talking to M you know to be honest I wonder where he could go like his contract is going to be really tough to move he’s got a lot of money a lot of term and when things aren’t going well and you’re not playing well well it’s not exactly going to have teams beaten down your door to make the acquisition but certainly if he can get back to playing like he’s capable of and you know we he can be a number one Center who can score you 40 goals 80 plus points you know that’s what we’ve seen in the past if a team thinks they can bring that back out in him and get him rejuvenated maybe they make the move but either way we’re led to believe that major surgery for the Rangers roster and big moves are in the works and coming here soon for this roster and that the GM and the coach likely survive long enough to get some more of this work done and uh at least survive some of these players who are likely going to be shipped out here before they will so we’ll see what happens I mean Brooks’s report does indicate that he feels that the players quitting will eventually cost lavet his job but the question is if they move on from him who comes in that’s the other question is is there somebody better out there and if it’s more on the players you know are they actually going to take the approach for once and say you know what as much as it’s easier to move than fire the coach we don’t think it’s his fault you know will he get uh you know a longer lease year while jury tries to fix the roster let me know what you think down in the comments we’ll discuss further if you’re new to the channel of course make sure you subscribe and stick around we’ll keep you up to date with the latest news rumors and Analysis of all 32 NHL teams thank you for watching and I will catch you next time oh [Music]
