extremely busy day of NHL news today we got lots to cover in tonight’s video including a trade that happened earlier between the Sharks and the Avalanche seeing the two teams swap goalies plus some other pieces we had today started off with a bang with Michael llau the Senator’s owner making some pretty strong accusations towards the New York Rangers plus we got worded that b media may be changing the uh the NHL landscape in Canada with a possible TSN sale we’ll discuss what that means for hockey in Canada and the regional rights and all that could be affected plus we regarding some additional trades and some rumors around the NHL a couple of pieces regarding former Ranger Captain Jacob trouba we know that when the Ducks and Rangers were holding discussions around that trade before it was finalized according to Elliot Freeman there was a lot of talk about defenseman Cam Fowler being involved in that deal both sides seem to have interest but had a hard time making it work could they revisit that deal a little bit later and see another trade go down between those two clubs plus if the Ducks do flip Jacob trouba before the NHL deadline which a lot of people think is a possibility could the former Ranger Captain end up in a team like Toronto there’s one Toronto Rider that feels he’d be the perfect fit and it Leaf management would be all over that all that plus news from the waiver wire and a few injury updates coming up next so welcome back to another video here at Top Shelf hockey as I mentioned there there’s a ton of stuff to go over here today so let’s not waste any time Dive Right In and get started so we don’t end up making this video too crazy long but a few quick updates here first uh NHL waivers news we had three players on waivers yesterday including gvan Smith of the sharks who was later traded we had Joey Anderson and Caleb Jones all three players have cleared and can be reassigned to their AHL Minor League affiliates here uh the three stars of the NHL for the past week include Florida Panthers uh forward Matthew kachak who had a phenomenal week playing three games putting up 11 points absolutely exploded after I wouldn’t say it’s slow start but certainly not quite up to his standard for offensive production but he made not for it this past week uh Bren Point had a phenomenal week for the lightning only appearing in two games but putting up eight points so phenomenal results there and Vegas gold Ender Aiden Hill is the third star picking up a couple of wins with a 971 save percentage so not much going on behind the uh the crease here of uh aen Hill not giving up a whole heck of a lot a few quick injury updates as well on the reassign here the devils are indicating that gold Thunder Jake Allen is being evaluated for a potential injury that he’s dealing with it may not be available for the devil’s game against Toronto uh which I believe is tomorrow so I believe markr was scheduled to start that game anyways but Allen may not be available for backing up so they may have to recall a go tender will likely find that out tomorrow uh in Boston apparently David poock is also dealing with a bit of an upper body injury uh he is going to travel on the upcoming road trip uh but it’s not a guarantee that he plays but he’s going to see uh how things go and if he can play through the injury but uh certainly have to keep an eye on Pak to see if his um ability to play is impacted and in Minnesota newly acquired young defenseman David EK has been reassigned to the American Hockey League and they’ve recalled cam crate now I know year did see a little bit of action with Minnesota I’m not really sure what to make of that move um not sure sure if that’s a good sign or not considering the assets they just gave up to get him obviously there was no guarantee with the trade that he was going to stay in the NHL the rest of the year but I know that was a big part of why he wanted to get uh you know a new Fresh Start was to hopefully get more NHL opportunities so again probably not a big deal but something that that’s worth noting here I guess uh we got some other things around the NHL today first I want to talk about a couple of stories that we that have already happened some things that we know for sure then we’ll get into some of the speculation here but the day started off with a bit of a bang it was early in the day when we got word from Pierre LeBron at TSN that Michael ANL was um making some pretty bold accusations towards the New York Rangers now of course we know last week towards the end of the week before the Jacob trouba trade went down sending him to the Anaheim Ducks there was a story in the New York Post saying that uh amongst trade well Larry Brooks the New York Post wrote the article and I don’t have the exact story here I don’t want to misquote them but essentially saying that it made people believe that trade talks have been happening and that their new prime target was Brady kachu of the Ottawa Senators trying to see if they can pry him away and trade for him to bring him to the Big Apple well of course the sends went on the defensive again they had to deny the fact that there was even any discussions whatsoever um and Michael anlow is pretty ticked off because of it this has happened three times now in the fact that he’s only the team just over one year um he said he has a great relationship as the team with the uh with you know the captain Brady kachar there was they have zero desire to trade him and they’ve got zero sense that he wants to leave they has a very confident in their relationship and there’s kind of tired of this uh narrative that you know teams can just pry him away now if the article had been written saying you know the New York Rangers should Target Brady kachu or that U you know they need a player like Brady kachu that that’s all fine and dandy that’s like what I said earlier in the video like that was uh more to me like you know fantasy and fiction here like you know at the same time you know you can’t stop people from saying well you know they should they should do this they should do that but when you when you make it sound like it’s actually happening and these discussions are ongoing that’s a completely different story so I know there seems to be a mixed reaction mixed opinion uh the story was starting to die down and of course the comments for an laer kind of just rled it all back up again which is understandable uh but he felt the need that he had to defend his captain defend his fan base and defend his team which is admirable as well he knows that the sends have lost a first round pick because of a screw up from former GM Pier Dorian that happened long before his arrival and purchase of the club um you know so he knows the teams can be punished for making mistakes and I think he’s you know wants to make sure that if other teams screw up they get punished as well and I think he’s also been on the defensive trying to do what he can to convince the league to give him that first round pick back that it’s too harsh a punishment not fair especially given the fact that this was all something that happened long before the ownership change and there was nothing was really ever disclosed to him uh about it being an issue at least prior to the sale I mean he did say that he had heard about the situation uh before the sale closed but it was to believe that it wasn’t going to be a problem that changed and then of course you know he fired Pier Dorian over that which is completely understandable so he accused the New York Rangers of soft tampering uh assuming that somebody leaked information to the New York Post indicating that they were having trade conversations with the Senators around their captain and that was completely uh false now within a short spell of that article coming out uh at least a couple NHL insiders looked into things and um wholeheartedly denied everything and said that it’s completely BS there’s nothing going on here uh Brady kachuck not having not going to be traded uh the Rangers are not really doing anything here so um you know the Rangers put out a statement denying everything said they leave it up to the commissioner’s office to handle it it’s believed after the board of Governor’s meeting today which is taking place in Florida that bill Dy did have a conversation U with Michael lower sounds like it was kind of offline one-on-one to understand his concerns what not but I it doesn’t sound like anything’s going to come from it I don’t think there really can without any kind of Hardcore proof and I don’t know that he really has that so that’s why he referred to it as soft tampering but the NHL has been uh cracking down on tampering and has put out a memo about a month ago to all teams reminding them about how tampering works and that you can’t do it um Ellie Freeman has reported recently that they were very unhappy with uh how this past free agent period went you know considering the number of deals that were ready to roll uh and sign within minutes of free agency opening you know that teams and players had to be been talking well ahead of the time that they were allowed to uh to have everything negotiated and Sign Sealed and Delivered that quickly once free agency opened I mean to me it’s been an ongoing issue for years outside of free agency I don’t know that there’s really been a whole lot of anything in that sense but when it comes to free agency stuff every year like you know the free agent period open and then within no time you get all these signings how do you think that happens like to me it’s it’s quite rampant and it’s basically the the GMS are kind of all ignoring the rules and if everybody looks the other way and nobody really wants to go to the league with it then it’s never going to be a problem well obviously I’m taking it that somebody must have complained and well here we are but uh as much as I do understand andl complaints and frustrations like I said in the other video if you can just solve one thing here it’s the win winning solves everything if they were having the success that they were expected to be having you wouldn’t be hearing rumors about changes it’s just that simple so as much as I can understand the frustration you understand you don’t like it you know I think it just kind of comes with the territory especially being in a Canadian Market heavily scrutinized and unfortunately with you get big markets especially big American markets they sometimes the media the fan bases they look at the smaller markets especially in Canada be like oh they’re not winning he’s not going to want to stay there and then they just that’s how rumors generate so I think they’re going to have to deal to some degree at least with the noise and winning fixes everything so focus on that you’ll quiet everybody up and the problem will go away so I think that’s how they have to put their focus here and you know they’ve had their moments this year where uh winning was uh you know coming better and you know good little streaks but then they seem so far at least they continue to have these little setbacks so um lots of hockey left and if they can put together a better streak and get into that playoff spot then then then a lot of that’s going to go away but it was a big story uh today uh of course another big story today as well was a trade that took place between the Sharks and the Avalanche saw another goalie trade so the Avalanche have completely revamped their goalie tandem of course it wasn’t long ago in the past week they traded um an Nunan to uh the Predators for Wedgewood uh of course Wedgewood comes in as a new number two and now they’ve got a new number one with uh Alexander gorev going to the San Jose Sharks along with kovalenko and a Peck in exchange for uh McKenzie Blackwood Giovanni Smith and two picks so you know McKenzie Blackwood who has been pretty good in San Jose in a not so great team for a couple years they picked him up from the Devils for a sixth round pick they kind of rehabilitated him so to speak made um helped them be a better goalie and now here they are getting a better return and I suspect blockwood would probably be one of the better options uh for the Avalanche because they get a decent goalie but not a ridiculous price so and they want to do this early so they have time to really be ready for the playoffs and have him be adjusted to the team and the systems and all that so another goalie trade and the avalanche now have a completely revamped tandem now with Wedgewood and Blackwood working together so there we have it so that was a big story here today as well another story came across cross as well earlier in the day uh from one of our media contacts is that there is some some speculation that b media who owns TSN and a lot of other of course they one of the major media player here in in Canada might be selling TSN based on how things are going there there is some talk that they might try to sell off this brand now um you know hockey in Canada has certainly been a big deal gets good ratings TSN has Regional updates they lost out on the national rights package last time around which was quite a few years ago now when Rogers picked up the bill um I’m not sure who would buy TSN um but like there is a lot of thoughts from those Welling to know in the media world that it looks like Bell may be going down this road so we’ll have to see I mean Amazon has done a phenomenal job with their couple of uh pieces that they’ve picked up they picked up Monday night hockey and of course they have the Thursday night Coast Coast I’ve been absolutely Blown Away with how good they are the quality of picture is better the quality of sound is better the fact that you can watch warm-ups uh before the game comes on is better uh they have great um panels and host um it’s just an extremely well done product in my opinion and to me the Amazon uh part of hockey and Canada it’s it’s more than likely only going to grow I don’t know if Amazon would be having interest to buy TS or not I mean obviously they’re extremely wealthy company they could do it but will they want to or do they just want to buy their rights and continue with their own thing I don’t know but certainly something to look out for um it could change the the landscape again for hobby white chalki and what the media availability is here in Canada for the NHL product so again I’m not sure how quickly something like that will come together but a story worth monitoring here nonetheless now regarding the board of governor meetings there’s U meetings taking place in Florida uh all the Insiders are down there reporting on things one thing that there is a lot of optimism about which is good to hear is there’s still a lot of optimism around labor peace uh and getting a new CBA done of course we’re uh at a point where there’s optimism that they may have a new CBA in agreement uh to extend everything by the time we reach the Stanley Cup Final now that’s not a guarantee but of course that would be well ahead of the expiration date which is good um so that we can have you know peace of mind that there’s not going to be any chance for labor stoppage uh for the foreseeable future now of course we get the Olympics next year uh there’s a lot of reasons to be getting ahead of this and making sure that everything is good now a couple of key points that the the Insiders on TSN mentioned that were being discussed doesn’t mean they’re going to be you know part of the next CBA but they are on the table and we’ll see how much support they get but I know Darren dger was talking about how there is some support for having some sort of a playoff salary cap um you know it’s been mentioned before with the how players and teams going kind of get stashed on ltir they load up for the playoffs and then while when you get to the playoffs there is no cap so like you can bring back any players that were out injured doesn’t matter that you’re not cap compliant because there’s no rules well a lot of GMS don’t like that and there are you know some that are concerned that teams kind of it abuse it a a little bit but theoretically right now it is part of the rules so teams that have done it you’ve seen Tampa do it you’ve seen Vegas do it you know it’s not illegal it’s not wrong are they exploiting the rules a bit may maybe and you know if they’re that good at it then you know maybe other teams should get just as good at it too but it sounds like there’s a possibility that loophole might get closed I know it’s been suggested that an easy solution would be that every lineup that you dress for any particular playoff game has to meet the cap rules so let’s say like you know I’ve an $88 million cap the salaries for the Season On Any Given game for the players that are dressed cannot exceed that if you just did something like that would be easy that way you have the ability for basically all players to be available if they’re if they’re healthy you can go in and out but you know you have to have a a lineup within that cap world so that’s that’s a possibility we might see something like that um there was also some talk about you know the the uh the locations that have the no state tax and some sort of you know equalized taxation system but drer was I guess a little bit less confident that there’ be enough support for that and how it would work but it is something that’s been raised but hard to say how much support it gets now as I mentioned a couple of uh rumors around some other deals we might see in Elliot Freeman 32 thoughts podcast that came up this morning uh they talked about a variety of things one of the things they talked about of course was the Fallout from the Jacob trouba trade uh which went down on Friday and of course talked about the fact that the Rangers and the Ducks had extensive talks and that there was um appetite from both sides to include Cam Fowler in the deal but they were unable to make it work um you know Freeman went on to say that of course we know Fowler has some trade protection but he’s obviously willing to expand that list and be a lot more open-minded with the Ducks to facilitate a deal and that you know he definitely wants to go play for a contender so the belief is that he was if he was asked to wave if if he required it for the Rangers that he probably would have agreed to it um but again like I said looking at what was all included here um obviously the cap was a bit of an issue and whatnot we’ve also heard that the Rangers were very interested in a reunion with thank forano so maybe is it possible later in the season that these two teams kind of revisit this and and maybe we do see an additional deal between the Ducks and the Rangers that could possibly send those two players to uh the New York Rangers could they be targeting you know a a vatrano return and a Fowler pickup it’s hard to say how they can make it work they definitely would have to move out salary as well of course later in the year their cop situation could be different so it’s hard to say for sure but at the end of the day um it makes sense that there would be interest from both sides so again these are players that we know the Ducks want to move uh they obviously struggled to make everything work so they’ be all be cop compliant so we’ll see where that goes um but Cam Fowler to the Rangers is something that we’ll have to keep an eye on now with trouba being traded we know that how everything went down of course and there’s already numerous articles one was from the hockey news there was also one from Luke Fox of sportset suggesting that it’s quite possible we might see tro flipped before the deadline now he does have some trait protection and I don’t know how he’s feeling about everything but based on his comments it sounded like he was quite content to write out the rest of his contract in Anaheim when because when he said what team he he was willing to go to that he obviously you know felt good about everything and you know picked Anaheim not just for himself but thought it was best for both careers for himself and his wife of course he was a completing a medical residency in New York at the moment so I don’t know that he’s going to want to up and be moved again uh he does have some trade protection as we know so it’s not like he can block everybody but there was a Toronto Sun article from Steve Simmons and I’m not a big lover of Steve Simmons don’t get me wrong but I found it interesting that he’s not really wrong here that he would be the trio would be the kind of defenseman that the leaf would really like you know he’s got big strong defenseman who can hit now is he perfect defensively he’s far from it and you do see enough mistakes or at least you have in the past now we know that Brad Tre living and the way they like you know he and his his management team would be all over adding a big strong defenseman of that nature so I think they’d be very very interested Ducks would have to retain 50% uh for this year and next and it would certainly be a creative deal but again does Troy really want to head back East does he want to go to a team like Toronto or Detroit or Buffalo or any of these other teams have been rumored here I’m not really sure that he does but there seems to be enough people convinced that the Ducks may try to do this by the deadline so we’ll have to wait and see of course how this goes and whether or not he’s going to write out the rest of his contract with the ducks or if another trade comes sooner than later let me know your thoughts on all today’s news and rumors down in the comments we’ll discuss further if you’re new to the channel of course make sure you subscribe and stick around we’ll keep you up to date with all the news rumors and Analysis of all 32 NHL teams thank you for watching I will catch you next time [Music]
